How do we discuss a movie like THE BLUE LAGOON, which was so impactful to a generation of young people, when we are plagued with knowing too much about the depravity of humans? Well, we’re sure going to try. Sometimes a teen girl movie deserves interrogation more than celebration. This week, The Wives Colangelo are tackling one of the highest-grossing films of 1980. It, uh, it's going to get weird.

0:00Greetings and salutations and welcome to this ends at prom a coming of age-bad gas highlighting cinema about or marketed towards teen girls I'm one of your hosts BJ Kalangelo and I'm joined by my wife Harmony Kalangelo a trans woman who grew up watching None of these movies is today's movie a queen bee or are we killing the teen dream? Get in loser. We're analyzing the movies people make fun of us for loving I don't wanna be your merch girl I wanna be here God damn it all And I don't wanna have to work twice as hard for the same motherfucking side all that I We love us We love Probably won't be so lucky We
1:04We haven't even started talking about this movie and I already feel like I need to take a shower Dude we were supposed to do this a month ago, but then oral surgery was a thing and so this week I'm like, oh no, and you go what I say I think I have to watch the blue lagoon a second time though Like you don't have to like I there's so much devil in those details. I have to I can't remember them I have to watch it again God damn it. Hello officer. Yes, it's this movie right here. Oh, thank God Thank you for saying that on the movie and not me because I had the feeling I The feeling I pause it to get a time stamp and I was like oh God I hope no one is watching our TV like why are you pausing at this moment? Well, there's no good moment to pause it at any point in this movie Oh prom party we're talking about The blue lagoon Just so you know if you've never seen this movie you don't have to no you really don't you certainly don't you I mean you can I
2:07I don't know if I would recommend it if you were to be where you're in for a scare What's crazy about this movie is that I remember watching this when I was really young like really really young Yeah, and not fully having a grasp of like why this movie was so controversial Sure because when this movie came out My one of my aunts really liked it and she was really young She was like 14 or so at the time and she was like oh my god I love blue lagoon like it's so sweet. It's such a lovely love story And so then I watched it when I was really young and I was like okay, and when I say really like I mean like we're talking like like nine or ten like sure very young and I was like okay Yeah, I kind of remember it. It's about you know these these two kids and they're on an island and because they're the only Peacup people there they fall in love definitely forgot they were cousins canonically. Yeah But I it's very easy to miss that part very much They mention at the start and then it's just kind of like anyway. They're just on an island together Don't worry about it. It could have been so easy to just make them like childhood friends, but no no no no
3:12We have to fly over the added source material though sure sure sure sure fun whatever So you know, that's a little strange, but obviously as a nine or ten year old I did not Understand like intentionality behind camera shots yet. Yeah, I didn't understand the gaze as in Gase de Of not as a cinematography yet not as in us of cinematography So revisiting this movie felt real icky Yeah, real real icky And it's also a very complicated movie to talk about because outside of the moments where it feels really icky There's something here. There is something there and it's annoying How do we not throw the baby out with the bathwater when talking about the blue lagoon? This is the burden is nature that our podcast has evolved too Which is at one point it was like I'm just gonna show how many movies she's never seen and that was real cute No for time. It's like oh now we're actually like analyzing the more We're discussing like their place in history like we context wasn't a thing
4:14We really did at the start of the show and that over time we have just sort of evolved into like a compendium We have become like the codex that all like especially girl coming of age movies Must pass through because we have become historians and there's one particular field And that means you gotta do the blue lagoon at some point It was the ninth highest grossing movie the year it came out which is God everyone needs to be on a lot of watchless. I swear to God. Okay. I Understand the instinct to say that I know The most is so popular with like young people and not just creeps exactly That's the frustrating thing is Let's just get into some context here before we get into context. I needed to ask you I don't know your history with this movie. We didn't talk about it. I've never seen the blue lagoon before however I've seen I love the 80s. That's what I thought was your interest What it seemed to be a VHS quality rip of I love the 80s and Boy rewatching that after watching reality bites and like the fake like pizza trailer shot of the reality bites
5:16Things set to like six different songs with the psycho music interspaced It's really is how VH1 edited their shows 10 years after that movie came out. Mm-hmm, but um During lockdown we revisited some I love series and we were stunned by the fact that it is a comedy show first and foremost So that means you would have things like Bernie gets and would be like oh jokes about gunning down people Monica Lewinsky Either those were the jokes that everyone was making or those were the jokes that were prioritized in the editing And so I'm like oh god. I remember very distinctly people talking about it. I have to see How they process the blue lagoon on I love the 80s volume one Which means it is the first episode of I love the 80s And it is mostly dudes it is very it was very few women that were talking heads for that segment It was just a bunch of guys going like well I had to see Brooke shields You know, I was 14 or I was 12. I was whatever I had to see Brooke shields
6:19She was Brooke shields that was really formative for me And it's like okay, it's creepy and weird, but when you are the same age it is The appropriate kind of it's appropriate in of itself to want to see a girl your age Yeah, I mean we talked about this a little bit on our never been kissed episode where I talked about how lilieso biesky was like my first true celebrity crush And whenever people ask me about it I always say never been kissed because she's at least 18 in that movie when the reality is that it was jungle to jungle when I was like Seven yes, and she was nine. Yes, but you don't say that as an adult because that's crazy to say and so I get Why all of these now grown men are reflecting on that time and being like well? Yeah, I had to see Brooke shields because they were what 12 14 years old when it happened It wasn't weird age, but talking about it with reverence as an adult is like a very uncomfortable line There's a way that you have to discuss this movie of being like at the time this was something not at the time I'm like, oh, I still get feelings. Yeah, that's crazy
7:22There's a certain way that you need to discuss it So yeah, you saw it with an ant I saw it for the first time in my 30s with me with you Let's let's get into a little bit of context for this thing because I Needed to know I needed to understand the blue look I am not a book historian However my understanding From the research I did on that aspect of this movie is that the original blue the goon is an early 20th century Seminal coming of age sexuality story. Yes, like it is extremely important for the early 1900s in Understanding that young people Not teens because teen is not a term that exists yet It is a thing that they had never really understood before and the book was immensely popular and had been adapted a few times before We got to this version including I think a silent film that is now lost but
8:24Oh my god, so Brook shields She is the reason this movie was marketed the way it was the she is the reason this movie made the money that it did Uh, I rewatched like the first hour or so up until about when she goes to college of the Brook shields documentary from a few years ago pretty baby pretty baby We talked about that on the patreon if you want a full in-depth conversation. Yes. Well, how's a few years ago now? I think it was new at the time. Yeah, but It is uh covering basically from her birth to going to college That is the period of this that I rewatched because I wanted to figure it out and there's so many details that I forgot There's so many things that like you know, you know, and then you're reminded and go oh no You know, what do you mean some guy who took photos of her when she was nine years old and in the nude sued and won his case to release them after she got famous? What do you mean the Calvin Klein ads are more psychotic and perverted and horrifying than anything in the blue lagoon somehow
9:25Yeah, what do you mean? Fucking Louis mall was making a 11 year old Brook shields make out with a man on the set of pretty baby What the fuck do you mean? This is a thing that we just thought was cool to do in the 70s. Mm-hmm. That's psychotic so Brook shields was from birth Her alcoholic mother was like she's going she has a beautiful face She has beautiful eyebrows. She is somebody and we will market her as such and she was a model And over the course of her young careers a model she became the most photographed. We'll win on the planet. Mm-hmm That's immense for someone who is 14. Yeah That's putting it lightly and the thing is like Brook shields was marketed in a way that I like we don't even market Pop idols now this way now we didn't even market like pop idols in the 90s the way that Brook shields was marketed No, and we really didn't do it with young girls before her Mm-hmm that she she was like patient zero for the sexualization of teens in the 70s the crazy coked up 70s
10:32um and There was a lot of pushback especially from feminists. Yeah, right fully so yes from the sexualization of young girls and the way the Marketing portrayed things because at one point her modeling work was very innocent and then as she got a little bit older And when I say older I mean like 12 it started to become more revealing and the poses got different and the way people processed Brook shields was very very unique and that's weird Blue lagoon as a movie is Probably the only one of her movies that we will discuss from her time as a youth We're definitely not doing pretty baby and I can't foresee us doing endless love because who needs that? I could do Alice sweet Alice. She's in that. She's barely in that She's also like six She is not she is it is a factoid she is in that movie. It is not a thing of note that she is in that movie But blue lagoon is the only movie from those trio of films
11:34That is made by an American director and that this is during a time where American directors really want to be European directors. Yes, so Louis Moll is a French director He'd that pretty baby is his first American film he'd been trying to break the market You might if you went to film school you might have had to see my dinner with Andre that is also him It's got that movie rocks god. It sure does. I am not on Andre side for the vast majority of that movie but I Hate the way that like Directors and all tours gotten sane in the 70s and it was because people like the French and the Italian Were really showing how far you could go and as long as he didn't go as far as the French of the Italians It was okay. Yep the French were gonna get way more sexual and extreme with stuff and the Italians were going to be so violent and Exploited yeah, that was the style of Fucking cannibal holocaust came out in that thing like an actually Exploited like animal abuse and native abuse movie where people thought he killed his cast. Yes
12:36Like insane work. So pretty baby is by Louis Moll endless love is by Franco Zeffri Ali. I think I'm saying that right. I'm just gonna let you go keep going cool You might know him For doing the version of Romeo and Juliet you probably had to watch in school. Oh Louis Hussie. Yes An equally controversial film with an underage girl Yeah, one where later in life the two of them tried to sue to be like hey This is exploitative and you've been showing our nude underage bodies for years and I believe they lost or Olivia Hussie passed away before they were able to come to some sort of conclusion I can't remember what the final outcome was but like yeah, it took her like over 50 years to be like wait a minute Yeah, this is fucked up. Yes, and Brooksheeld seemed to have had a similar approach to that from the documentary that I was watching In which she was saying like you know, I didn't even think about you know the sexuality of things because I hadn't come of age yet
13:36Like I grew up in a pretty religious household because of my father And I was raised to be like you save it to a marriage And so I hadn't come of age. I didn't have any of these thoughts. I didn't have these feelings So I had not really processed anything that was going on to the fullest extent yet It was just showing up for work And then you pose and you say your lines and that's that Somehow blue lagoon being the one that is the most innocent of these fucking movies is insane to me but blue lagoon is also Made by someone who has a track record in the case of our show You might know Randall Clicer as the director of Greece A Filthy movie that he made much cleaner Blue lagoon is a Probably cleaner story that he made filthier but he's really sneaky about it This is only his second ever film. He directed however. He had done TV Yes, he did boi in the plastic bubble and perhaps also most relevant to our things and also maybe the
14:38You know the smoking gun prior to this would be dawn portrait of teenage runaway starring tv's jambraity We will absolutely be covering that at some point There are dubious quality uploads that exist on sites like youtube And I would love to watch it because I want to know what Eve plum is like when she does serious roles Far away from the rest of the Brady bunch while they were doing the Brady bunch variety hour where people did pool choreography And apparently it's one of the worst shows ever made. I also want to watch that So the nature of What people were making at the time the the the nature of what people were doing as filmmakers In the world of blue lagoon makes blue lagoon not look weird at the time because people were just doing this And then you see the finished product and go hold on Did you have to film children like this brandel correct? And this is why the context is important because looking at this movie in 2026 It seems like a real How did no one realize how weird this is this is a movie for creeps not its intended audience of young people
15:42Correct because the way that their bodies are being filmed with Christopher Atkins being 18 brook shields at the time being 14 is so Solacious like it is shot the way that like soft core is shot. It's so uncomfortable But when you look at even the documentary of pretty baby there are segments where they're interviewing like 14 year old girls Who have just seen the movie that are like I've seen it six times. It's so beautiful I love it so much like they're they're also not processing What they are seeing and how kind of grows? I mean, I'm sure they're having a response to it because it's filmed in order to get a response But they don't understand like they're thinking of it in terms of their own feeling not the wider way that it can be processed Right, and also this is a time period where people are not As aware of just how many fucking creeps there are in this world true I think also people don't understand cinematography. You know your average person doesn't understand how that works to understand
16:44Like what framing and what the gaze of the the lens is You know, there was there was a lot of people who watched one battle after another a movie that I think is kind of overrated And everything great about it comes down to the cast really shining against an okay movie But they were like I hate how this movie sexualizes black women and it's like well Yes, obviously it's supposed to because the camera is being used as the view of the character looking at them at that particular point Not Paul Thomas Anderson It is not his gaze in the context of the story It is Sean Penn as Grossvin's McMahon type staring at those women like that The lens is these characters staring at each other like this Which is why the movie gets grosser as it goes on and they get older and become more sexually active in the blue lagoon Yes, so I understand the techniques and the choices of it the movie is even at times somewhat tastefully trying to hide nudity
17:45For example like ethic on as far as ethic it's concerned if you ever see too much of Brooke Shields in this movie It's not hard depending on your definition of too much because there's a lot of too much The the things you're definitely not supposed to see is like a 30 something body double yeah, so like they are having that there's A lot of use of shadows. There's stuff hiding behind like coral when they're swimming You know, they make sure that they take her hair over her over her chest. Yes, they do things that are slightly better than they could otherwise be and it makes you wonder why didn't you do more of that? Yeah, oh, lady if you were going through the effort to do some you should have done more Yeah, but they're also filming in the late 1970s where the like the normalization of nudity was absolutely a thing happening during this time period And the fact that this movie is so focused on the innocence right like this is a coming-of-age story This is about the purity of innocence. It's it's very much an Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden kind of story Like that being touched on the added all yeah, not subtle at all
18:47And so that context is also important because I think what a lot of people also don't remember is that those Calvin Klein commercials we were talking about Which are so weird to watch because they're so gross They're so very much sexualized, but like Brooksheel's does this like one take thing where she's in a dress and then puts the jeans on and she positions her body in a Waste that you never see What you're not supposed to see but it's like very much teased and does really good poses and she really The lines really well So like it's really well made and I think really well made stuff makes people miss the point Yes, but those commercials a lot of TV stations did not want to show them because they were like These are very titillating and she's a minor. We're not showing these I mean also just the fact that we weren't trying to put titillating stuff on TV at that point in time But they were still very chased networks Right, but the the stuff that she does in that commercial of the hiding of the body the like trick of body Positionings that you don't see too much is the same kind of stuff that she does in blue lagoon
19:52But because it's a marketing tactic because it's a commercial to sell you blue jeans You are much more aware of what you're seeing because you know that you're being sold something Yeah, and you're being sold something through sexuality You don't notice it as much in blue lagoon because oh, it's so innocent Oh, it's so innocent But of course in the later years we have learned behind the scenes They were trying to manufacture a relationship between Brook Shields and Christopher Atkins as a piece of marketing They were trying to say yep this movie you're you're actually watching Brook Shields come of age and have her first sexual experiences Like that's what you get to see so like they were actively trying to profit off of the sexualization of a 14 then 15 year old girl And I don't think the general public was as aware of that as they were With the Calvin commercials. No, of course If I may speaking of them the marketing mm-hmm and speaking of the nobody look at my fucking search history because I had to watch this god damn movie
20:53And I also had to pause it because I was getting a transcript while doing it. I Watched the trailer for the blue lagoon this morning mm-hmm and I wrote down how they marketed this almost exclusively over the way too long romantic scenes of young people and young bodies mm-hmm Imagine two people surviving alone in a dangerous paradise Imagine a boy who didn't know he'd become a man Imagine a girl who did know that she had become a woman Imagine two people who knew nothing about love and so knew everything Columbia Pictures presents yada yada yada yada The most sensuous love story is a story of innocence you That's that is the trailer for this movie that is how they marketed this movie The things that get me about it are one it innocence has youthful connotations that is a thing that is gross and a reality that has existed
21:58In how people discuss sexuality for decades and decades and decades But also the marketing is really putting the onus on her mm-hmm because he is a young boy Who doesn't know what sex is but she definitely does because she has a period and then it's cuts to her looking at him going your muscles He's like why you always looking at me funny Yeah, which is so ridiculous like he jerks off into the ocean. He knows what's going on too That's a little bit later whatever in terms of like how the timeline goes But yes, they are discovering it at the same time. Yes, I Think that it is gross. However. There's so much more to this movie where it's like God, there's almost something here if you cut 10 minutes from this movie If you got 10 fucking minutes from this movie or use some alternate takes where I see less This is something mm-hmm and before we dive in any deeper it's time for everyone's favorite part of the show Welcome to September's morning announcements prom party over on the city hawkins dance this month
23:02We're coming at two opposite ends of the the feeling spectrum where we are doing one of BJ's absolute most favorite movies and also Something else entirely We will be discussing poly shores in seno man Wow poly shore what about Sean Aston what about Brandon Frazier? Okay. Oh, I'm sorry. How was that movie made? Was it made because it was banking on poly shore? I know we watch it for Brendan Frazier now We will also be doing what's eating Gilbert grape She has a lot of complicated feelings about that one and I haven't revisited it in a while So we'll see how that one holds up over on the TV homecoming episode We're doing a one shot. We're doing a one and done. We're revisiting something that was very formative to me in my youth We are covering the six episode anime classic of fully coolie It's technically about a boy, but I grew up in a way where I have big feelings about it In addition to those bonus episodes You're gonna get all of your normal patreon goodies access to the discord access to the suggestion box the ability to vote in a poll

25:09Alrighty, so the blue lagoon famously is split into like two time periods when they're really young and first get shipwrecked and then when they are All on the road on the island and then there's like a subtle time jump a couple years later Once they have produced a child once they have had baby. Yes. Of course. Yeah, so let's talk about Childhood what let's talk about this time period because for a little while on the island. They're not alone They got patty buttons. He is such a bluto from papa kind of guy He's just like this snarling gruff ship cook hand he's a very interesting character because he's clearly bad with kids But he also knows that it is his responsibility to take care of them Yeah, so when they're on the ship like he very clearly wants nothing to do with these rich children Yes, of course the he catches Richard going through his his cabinets and his drawers and find some huchi kuchi girls And then he just spanks the shit out of these kids for going through stuff
26:11But yeah, this movie opens with them on a boat and they're talking about Sam frisco And they learn what sharks are and we like learn about the status of most of the parents where Richard's mom is dead And amalines parents are dead and the only surviving one is Richard's dad who is mr. Fini Who later reemerges in the late end of the movie looking like Albert Einstein for some fucking reason I don't know why But a fire breaks out on the ship and the kids have to get into a lifeboat with patty buttons Richard sees the horror of You know soul of sailors stomping on top of each other in a panic trying to save their own lives because it is people being ugly towards each other And then they're little dinghy after the ship explodes because of blasting power it powder in the hall They get lost in a fog bank and are separated from all of the other lifeboats And that is how they end up on the blue lagoon far away from everyone else That is the setup of this movie. It's going for that like you know Deserted island whimsical Swiss family Robinson thing. Yeah, and so I do
27:12Like this section of the movie quite a bit I like the idea of children now having to learn about the world without like proper channels Having to learn by doing and the fact that patty is also Learning how to be a mentor a parental figure being a a caregiver something that he very clearly never wanted to do But understands like without him these children will die. Yes He's also like this crabby guy who Does the thing a lot of adults do which is like just tell kids lies if it's easier. Yes, um, and I You know at the age that they are you know, whatever it would be probably seven eight years old like young Um at the age that they are at this point that's still a thing you can do You know Easter bunny tooth fairy Santa Claus like those are all Those are all the cute little lies you tell kids patty said like when he's trying to make them feel better about being thirsty and stuck in a dinghy He says like look at look at the sun you can you can hear it hiss when it touches the water and
28:14Richard's like oh, I hear it and emeline's like I don't think I do Mm-hmm. They are young enough that they are still susceptible to Whatever stories adults can tell them and I gotta say for the first like 40 minutes of this movie I'm on board mm-hmm like I was watching this and I'm like okay. There is some like You know young nudity, but it's portrayed in a way that's not gross. It could have been portrayed better at one point Um, you know, they're running along the beach Um and patty is chasing after them is like oh you can't be running around naked. It's an indecent You need to take a bath or and they're running towards the camera in a better movie They'd be running away from the camera so that you see butts because butts aren't as bad as fronts. Mm-hmm Again, that's like how the movie is like just really trying to I guess at this point De-stigmatize nudity because they're going for the Adam and Eve thing like no one has taught these children shame right and patty is the only connection They have to the adult world and the adult shames of nudity
29:14But as like interesting little vignettes of them surviving on this island you see stuff that I find Interesting, you know, there's stuff washes up on the island. They find like a trunk full of like their belongings and At one point like Richard and Emma line are wearing each other's clothes patty wears a big dress and they're just goofing around and he's drinking rum like a pirate's been known to do and They there's something about like getting rid of gendered roles by playing dress up by getting away rid of the like gendered expectation of clothing that is very very interesting You know, those are taught things learned and taught through society So like you you you're on to something Yeah, and something I was thinking about as we were talking about like you know The kids were kind of like run around naked and stuff. It's like there are photos of me in like the bathtub with my parents Friends kids of you know like that were boys when we're like six years old
30:14Because we were so little that like we don't like there's nothing inherently sexual about it It's actually very weird when people make situations like that sexual. Yes Someone had to develop that that those photos, but like it's just kids being kids right? It was just like you know It's a kid saying I don't want to take a bath and you go you gotta take a bath Yeah, and it's like well, I don't want to because me and my friend are playing it's like fine You can both take a bath and it's like okay. Yeah, that's fun to tell because there's like soap and like water toys like that's great Bubbles yay. Yeah, and so another movie that we talked about on the show is assassination nation I the Coleman Domingo character and the Coleman Domingo character He has photos of his own children in like various stages of undress as like you know a bath time or whatever something That's completely innocent, but because he is also out of it as watching like pornography that is labeled as like Legal kind of thing People then make connections that are not there and they're like oh well clearly then you also feel that way about your child Why else would you have these photos on your phone? And it's like Well No, these things that's not the same thing these can exist in different parts of the brain. Yes
31:20Like you know I worked in an adult store for some years and I always thought it was very commendable when I had a man in his 60s Any man in his 60s come in and they would get someone who's like more age-appropriate because so many of them came in And they went to the 18 plus section which was really just youthful looking 28 year olds But like I was like every single time I'm like dude. She is a third of your age. Yeah Like what are you doing here? Yeah because at some point like it's the thing we discussed with I love the 80s it is You imprint a thought on your brain of like when you came of age when you experience sex when you decided like That's what a woman looks like who's hot in my mind and then you kind of never moved past that You didn't develop like an adult sense of like ah yes. I love women my own age I love a woman who's been through some things like I have and we can reflect on that not get lost in the fantasy Yes, I'm virile in 21 again You know that is a Complicated thing to navigate and most people just kind of follow their nose wherever it goes
32:20Yeah, they don't unpack that like a lot of people Know what they like but are too afraid or too filled with shame to unpack why that is sure why they like it Yeah, I think like or also they should slap themselves like like a like a with a rolled up newspaper go no You know, I saw an interview in the pretty baby documentary where the director of endless love was like Oh, I had to cast her. I've been in love with her before I even knew her. I mean look at her She's still looking she's gorgeous. She's stunning You you need to have a face of ecstasy. I'm gonna like twist your toes violently in order to make you have like Pained expressions during the sex scenes and endless love it is like why are you such a fucking weirdo? Yeah, stop it No, go away, but yes, someone needs to take a rolled up newspaper from her bad Why are we always fighting so much? I don't know Actually, your new year's revolution stop fighting so much I'll try but but what
33:21I don't know what's wrong with me when I say the things I say I Just keep on having all these strange thoughts What kind of thoughts? Just thoughts funny thoughts about you and me I Can They're just thoughts they don't mean anything So so for the first 40 minutes like there's something here like there's something genuinely interesting about This experience because it's genuinely trying to be innocent yeah, because it's not Gilligan's island like obviously That's like a farce but like Everybody who ends up on the island and Gilligan's island is an adult. Yeah, they know how the world works It's not cast away like these are children And so their understanding of the world is going to be entirely different especially when they're left to their own devices Which is exactly what happens because patty dies. Oh, he sure does like just on a on a on a drunken bender on a barrel of rum
34:21He takes the whole thing out to the ocean and floats away and drowns and then washes up on the beach Like it's pretty traumatizing. It's gross, but it was just kind of like patty fucking you dumbass Yeah, like did you do that on purpose or did you just decide I can't take it anymore like who who knows There's a lot of things about death that are left open ended in this particular film. Oh before patty dies though He does establish one thing that I don't think it's talked about nearly enough when people talk about the little goon for obvious reasons Everyone's too distracted by the book shields of it all This movie's low-key real racist not even like low-key. It's just like it's high-key It's high-key really racist. It's real racist, but there's so many other horrible controversial things and also that element is They never interacts with the main characters at all. It doesn't need to fucking be here again You cut like 10 minutes of this fucking movie and it's a better movie, but like boy this movie has sure has an early 1900s approach to people on islands Yeah, it's very much like don't go to the other side of the island or like the scary brown people will kill you And it's like what they refer to them as the drum people patty calls them the boogie man
35:24Yeah, correct, but we know what the subtext is saying He patty teaches them a couple lessons just to keep them alive But it's like you don't eat the berries that'll make you never wake up Yeah, you know you don't go to the far side of the island because that's law and law says you can't do it. It's illegal and You know that when you don't know anything else that is the only thing they have to work off of another element that I think the movie is Trying to use because it uses like these stills as like interstitials between what would be described as probably chapters of the book is One of their artifacts that is recovered from the shipwreck is essentially a view master It's like a little binocular thing with some photos and the photos seem to be showing a married couple there wedding Them having a fight whatever it's it's a lot of these Pieces of high society fancy costumes big parlor rooms and the movie is Them emulating what they see in the adults in these photos one especially once patty is gone
36:25You know it cuts between like okay their sexuality is becoming a thing Well, here's the wedding dress up. They're having a fight. Well, here's the couple having a fight It is them trying to essentially like piece together bits of humanity as they vaguely remember it Um, there's actually a scene that I think is really sad shortly after the time jump where It's Christmas somehow they have managed to keep track of Christmas But it is Christmas on a tropical island. It looks nothing like Christmas But Richard is trying to create some sense of whimsy for Emma line before she wakes up He uses like these stills to make fake reindeer hooves in the beach He fills her stocking with pearls that he found and tries to say that they're marbles She doesn't really fall for it and he reveals his hand quite quickly But that night they are Around their little makeshift Christmas tree and they are trying to celebrate Christmas And they are singing carols Mm-hmm And they really only know like the first Liner to and so you have you know people trying to reflect on what Christmas meant when you were a kid
37:29The way it brought everyone together when they are alone On this island that looks nothing like Christmas most places that we see Christmas be depicted And they're like Silent Deck the halls with bow and it's just really fucking sad. Yeah. Yeah It's really sad the way that they are trying to cling to something that is so So far back in their memory and it's just not there Yeah, because think about like when you were Eight years old nine years old. Oh, there's so many things. I don't remember like I was like what what do you remember? Like they're like you can I have a look Kroy of a memory Yes, we all have a look Kroy of a memory and a lot of the memories that we do have from that age are because we've had Parents and family members tell us those memories over and over again So we don't actually remember what happened. Yes, we remember you remember it as you remember it So you're saying tele phone with your own memory. It's effectively of a memory. Yes, so it's not happening how it actually happened So there are these elements up until this point of the movie even after the time jump to a little bit there
38:34Not quite the halfway. I'd say first like 40 45 minutes of this movie Where I think they're genuinely doing something. Yeah, it is a like it is whimsical, but it was also lonely Clearly it's trying to be lonely because then they're trying not to be lonely in the second half of the goddamn movie The way that their emotions start fluctuating because they're very clearly going through puberty Yeah, don't know what is happening to their own bodies because it's never been explained to them much less The other one doesn't understand it's a now they're just fighting with each other all the time Because like there's there's so many useful hormones Yeah, they don't know what's going on and they have no frame of reference for this because when you're a little kid Unless you go through puberty early the way that I did so therefore I got a crash course real fucking fast You don't know how you transition from childhood into adulthood until it happens to you Yeah, and someone explains to you what is happening like I genuinely think that when you're a little kid You're like and then one day I'll be all grown up and like that's your understanding of what happens Yes, no, I I agree like If you don't tell kids about things that are going to happen to their bodies then like
39:40They'll notice it eventually I guess well like when she gets her period it's straight up like the scene in carry like she's she thinks she's dying Richard thinks she's dying yeah, cuz what mean why wouldn't you think you're dying? You're fucking bleeding yeah for days Yes exactly I I don't know if we've ever discussed this on the show surely we have but like the first time I would have been I was a little bit of a late bloomer between eighth and ninth grade. I would have probably been 13 14 years old and you finally got your period. Yes, of course The first the first time I ever like you know I wouldn't even say that it was masturbation. It was just a thing that happened, but like I was watching TV um It was a wrestling match. I couldn't I can tell you one of the participants But because I have mad respect for her. I'm not going to And my body just had a response and then suddenly like I was just like wet and sticky and I was like What is this so then I like grabbed my sprite and I spilled it on myself So it's like that's why my shirt's wet and I threw it in the laundry I was very confused because like I was just like what the
40:40Ah and like you're also dealing with like the post the post nut shame of like whatever it is and now you're filled with that feeling really suddenly It's like whoa Ha When no one tells you about the things that your body is going to just do on its own that's yeah It's it's it's stressful. It's so crazy that that happened to you in like eighth grade and mine happened when I was nine. Yeah, I will But like straight up when I had my period and I didn't know what it was and my mom picked me from school her first words were I thought I had more time and in most cases she would have been right right correct But like that to me was the biggest betrayal. I was like you knew this was gonna happen betrayal What yes, so I think like For young audiences because I think this movie according to what the the TV was saying every time it came back from a commercial But it cuz boy I was watching it on 2b with commercials. Oh boy. I was seeing a lot of gambling ads Um, it was I think this movie was rated R But yeah, that would have been a lot of young people were watching a rated our movie and as I understood it from some research
41:43I was doing apparently the parents were totally fine with their kids watching this Because I think it was just doing the birds and the bees talk for them. Yeah, I think that's a big part of it And also it was built as innocent and if you don't have like gross connotations to that word It's just like well. It's just gonna be about young people discovering sex. They're young. They're gonna figure it out eventually It's fine. Yeah, I mean, I did a little research as well And there were a lot of people who said that not only is this the first read in our movie that they ever saw But this was the first time they ever saw nudity Of people that their own age and understood that their bodies were gonna be changing like They didn't know because as much as people like to look at the 1970s as a decade of like Oh free love expression post-war like everybody's just kind of fucking each other and doing all sorts of stuff A whole lot of post hippie burn out. Yeah, but we're also We're also on the verge of like Reagan era conservatism So like the backlash to that has already started. It's not been implemented by like a voting body yet We needed to get in there. We needed to return to some good old-fashioned American sensibilities where we make America great again
42:49Because yes, Trump didn't even come up with that originally. That's a Reaganism Right, we needed to do that because the 70s got too fucking nasty Yeah, and so we're seeing a return to repression Which means we're seeing a return to people being less likely Open to talking about these sort of things with their children. Well like parents Parents have never had to talk about sex with their with their kids before because that's a thing you've either done Or you haven't done and many haven't my parents didn't We see reflections of this sort of thing even in other movies this year Times Square comes out this year and Triniel Varado's father in that movie is a politician who is trying to clean up like the filth and the scum He's also supposed to be a Democrat. He's supposed to be a Democrat. He's a gentrifying Democrat. Correct sure is They're not so different. No, they're really not but like you know in the 80s. It was supposed to be different of course But like fame is misremembered as this like really really fluffy film and fame is like a hard-hitting drama about like the crushes of
43:50The crushing reality of performance and adulthood One of the main characters there goes and takes like photos that are far more revealing than she was prepared for in fame Something else outside of the scope of our show that happens this year that I think is probably worth bringing up I worked at an adult store for a couple years. I mentioned that already once there was a Section in that store called the classics and I loved the classic I know where this is going. Thank you going okay But the classic section included a lot of the golden age of porn stuff, you know deep throat Debbie does Dallas Behind the green door like these box office adult films. Yeah, this was the era of a lot of like erotica You know the mid 70s is often referred to as like the golden age of porn but like all Bob Chin's movies of course Erotica had a narrative and a story and would eventually build up to sex scenes it was not just sex scenes correct hard core pornographic stuff was considered just the fucking Soft core or erotica
44:51Had actual narrative stuff to it in many ways Blue lagoon is soft core for young people and it is Trying to be sly about it But it is very honest about what it's doing at least with itself Unfortunately, just not openly with everyone else But what comes out in 1980 is the first entry of a franchise that I did not realize ran as long as it did ran for about 30 years and had 27 entries In 1980 the first of the taboo movies comes out Huh, I knew that's exactly where you were going They were in the classic section at the adult store and I went what are these and I was like oh At least the first few entries is essentially Some flowers in the attic type thing. It is a lot of you know adult woman Young son adult man young daughter role play films many historians have pointed out that it is one of the first Movies of its kind that is specifically dedicated to fetishism any any kind of any kind
45:53That was not like there were not committed films dedicated for that so This being a franchise by the way first entries written by a woman and it actually has like some artistic narrative What it is saying like yes like there's there's things to it about like society and the failures of womanhood that exists in that first movie Amongst all of the more like controversial stuff like That is way more normalized like the step mommy kind of like thing is a very popular genre even today even today I've heard people argue that like that genre got very popular after the popularization of Game of Thrones Which is true, but also it's never not been popular. Yes, it's a thing. It comes it goes through waves If you ever look at like the porn hub top results every single year There are always going to be things that are going to be at the top and whether they are at number one or number four is going to Just depend on that particular year. Yeah, the fact that That movie comes out the exact same year as blue lagoon Mm-hmm We were just trot we were desperately trying to work through something there
46:56Because like it's not the issue that you are drawn to a fantasy It is the issue of why are you drawn to the fantasy for young people watching the blue lagoon That is extremely secondary that is the thing that like you and I would go yeah, it doesn't need to be there They could have been childhood friends It's the late 1800s or whatever they could very easily have just been like oh her parents died of cholera And she was your friend we brought her into our house because you can just do that during this time right you could it could have so easily been that but it's not I don't know it's not as striking It's not breaking down like the weird familial structures where society says you're not supposed to Well, I think it's twofold because I think that on one hand Them being cousins is exactly what you're saying like it is breaking down the societal Rules so to speak it is perhaps a step too far but I understand yeah So being like you're not supposed to burn it all down so you can plant new trees correct And then on the other hand, they're saying like look this is how innocent they are They don't realize that what they're doing is wrong
47:56And they find beauty in this and what does it say about us as the audience that we too can find beauty in their relationship No one of the criticisms of the literal interpretations of the Bible is like Adam and Eve Who did your kids have sex with yeah? You know when you when you're only when you're responsible for populating the entire human race and we all You know if you go back far enough. We're all related Sure Sure like if you're going to take it in a biblical sense where you don't realize quite how like Ik it is then like I get The broken way that you can get to that conclusion yeah but like for the more sexually suggested Narratives out there there is certainly something about being like cool. Why are you drawn to this? What about it is interesting to you? Is it to the shame? Is it the taboo? Do you have mommy issues? It's fine if you have mommy issues. There's nothing wrong with that just unpack them and understand where they're coming from Correct, but like then you're not filled with shame so then it's not as hot. It's this whole other fucking thing
48:57But like that is existing simultaneously as the blue lagoon is yeah, and that is a discussion that was worth having No, I agree with you completely and so this is where it then gets Obviously very weird is when the two of them start Recognizing each other sexually because I do think until They're squirt and sticky fruit on each other. Yeah It is very innocent you can you can still wave your hand on it and go okay. I get it Yeah, even when she I could stand to see less, but I get it Yeah, even when she acknowledges like look at your muscles like the way she says that is not like oh look at your muscles Like we're not in fucking rocky horror. Yeah, like she's Genuinely observing and realizing as she says it that acknowledging that is doing something to her it is very innocent is very like there's a discovery sense Funny in her tummy. Yeah, like because they don't know how to say like I'm horny So like that's how it is it's like you're feeling a tingling sensation somewhere deep within you and you don't know what it means Correct, and they also like they don't really have an understanding of something like consent because like first
50:02She's like you I'm all sticky because he's like putting you know mango or whatever like whatever that fruit is like juice on her But it also yeah, but then it also you know It's gonna taste good and then they're kissing and he gets really aggressive like really immediately because it's it's that thing that happens when you like Kiss someone for the first time and you're like really just like bricked up about it And like you kind of lose control about real hard you kind of like Maybe pinch pinch their lip against teeth. Yeah, like I know it's a little hard. It's like again chill out. A thing that is like very Normal that happens to a lot of we understand that this is normal when you are discovering how to kiss yes Like when you were discovering sexual sensation. Yes, but then like she immediately is like you get off of me and like he's like But I don't want to stop or whatever and so like it's like a very uncomfortable situation for me to watch Because I'm like, oh god, where is this gonna go like what? Uh Because we know too much. They don't know anything sure We know how bad this can go very very quickly fortunately it doesn't go in that direction
51:02It doesn't go in that direction, but it sure goes in the other Direction that having sex can go yes, and so it's just like babies are innocent They are born innocent in the eyes of our lord. I mean yeah, this movie had the the religious Undertones of this movie are not subtle at all. They're not even undertones. They're overtones But like like you have these moments like this where then I have to sit there and question and it's like okay But am I broken am I broken that my immediate assumption of him being like but I don't want to stop is gonna lead to something really really terrible and fucked up Like so this movie is such a like a minefield in that way. I don't want to give it enough credit to say it's like a Rorschach task Like it's not that's not that camera proves other what you are Telling me what to see here. It's correct. It's trying to get Exact feelings out of you at the exact right time and the intention of those makes us go. Ooh. Yeah movies are instruments of emotional manipulation That's why I love them correct But like I think of a later scene in this movie and like this is sort of tied to maybe an earlier scene when they're
52:04When the time jump hasn't happened to just yet, but once they have their their their child patty You know patty jr whatever it's like the only other real name that they know of correct this point So they have their their their their child and he's this little blonde baby boy And they're teaching him how to swim and there's all of these like underwater shots where you're watching him swim And it looks like the nirvana cover it looks like it really does it looks like nevermind and I was like look this fucking nevermind baby As a child my brother had that album and I was like ew He's he's got a little baby penis. He's naked ew. I don't want to look at this gross And I didn't listen to that album until like a lot later a lot later is like 12 as opposed to like five But I remember just being like that's gross It would if it was on a stack of CDs I would put another one on top of it because I didn't want to look at it I did the same thing. I was like ew gross But like that is a controversial album cover in the sense that like If you put it on the internet it gets flagged sometimes by AI is going mm-hmm
53:05What are you doing? What are you doing that? Excuse you why are you uploading that even though it is one of the most famous album covers of all time? Yeah so there's a lot of ways that you can process nudity and the The movie is doing it trying to have it both ways. Yeah, it's really trying to have it both ways where it's like We're gonna distract you with like trying to destigmatize it and try to be very innocent and non-sexual with young people So then we can be very draw a really hard line between when it is sexual But it is still being sexual with young people. They're just not as young. Yeah. Yeah, it's and the thing is She is always that young like Christopher Atkins is 18 years old and Something I will give him credit for is if you listen to any interview. He's done about this movie He is very Against like the marketing that they pushed up like you guys should be in a relationship where he was like she's 14 Like we have nothing in common. We also have friends who have worked with him and apparently he's a sweetie Yeah, everyone that we've talked to that knows him in real life has said that he's lovely
54:06But like he consistently is like no, this is not happening. It's a shame that an 18 year old had to be the adult onset Fucking right like it's ridiculous And of course like there's some interviews and stuff that you can watch from this time period where you can tell like They're doing the actor thing where they're so fucking awkward because they don't want to be like ill gross You can't you're at work. You can't just outright say the bad thing like you're being like hey This is fucked up, but like you're just like wow. It's just really like oh, it's we had such a fun time making the movie Beji was beautiful. Yeah, you can discover the unique lizard that it never been seen before Yeah, like they're trying so hard to just like pivot and be like don't ask me about this Yeah, in a way that's not gonna like get them fired or put them in breach of contract sure But he has always been like absolutely not and you know she talked about how They had like these little tanning things set up for them like these like little barriers where they would sit there In tan all day so that they wouldn't have tan lines which required them to like be nude and they have both been like yeah That was fucking weird like that was a weird thing that they had us do because it's one thing
55:11To be acting in the scene which is still uncomfortable still wild and of course no intimacy coordinator in sight of course not But that's at least acting that's at least Playing the role doing a thing. It's another thing to just be laying next to somebody randomly fucking naked that you've just met like there's is weird It's fucking weird I could never live her forever with just you. I don't even like you you never used to laugh at me You never used to have secrets you wouldn't tell me well You're not so perfect either mr. Richard the strange. I've seen you playing with it And I'll tell your father if he ever gets here you I hate you You almost hit me take it back take back what you said I've seen it all what happens after you've been doing it a long time shut up That isn't fair peaking. I don't peek on you That's a lie you're always staring at my puppies only because they look so funny You know what you look like now and you look like one of those pictures patty hat in his drawer one of his Ho Chi-Goo Chi girls. I do not I do not Chico Chi with Chico Chi stop that Richard or I'll never talk you again
56:14Ho Chi-Goo Chi with Chico Chi see him take away glitch Oh Richard I'm sorry. I didn't mean to hit you Wish you were tutton buried I will say in the in the the grand everything of this movie being weird The movie is kind of funny. Yeah, like for for one thing speaking of the tanning There's a scene where Richard is swimming with dolphins and it's very clearly in a tank Not as obviously a tank as aqua marine was obviously a tank But like you look at him and go oh buddy. You're like Ten shades of tan paler. Mm-hmm. This is either a shop before you went or after because you are not the same color Yeah So like that's funny or Like this movie is considered to have bad acting and I don't know if it's necessarily bad acting I think it's corny acting. I don't think that it's bad or corny I think that this sort of acting is the same type of acting that we see in old I'm not sure I'm on movie with the beach that makes you grow old because in that movie
57:16We also have children who then grow into adult bodies But their brains are still operating like children correct And so you are seeing adults act like children But not in a way that's like comedic and like over dramatic But like genuine and sincere which is what I was going to say yes that like people Considered this bad performances. Brooksheel famously got the inaugural bull golden at razzi for worst actress Fuck the razzis for her performance in blue lagoon. Yes And I don't think the performances are bad. I think you can Excuse it away and just as like a movie because They have not learned how to communicate by being around other adults like Brooksheel's herself was very had very good diction and was very well spoken at a very young age because she was the one child in a world of adults I think of our niece and nephew and how they are very articulate for kids their ages When they were younger especially because they just hung out at the kitchen table when we were all just shooting the shit
58:18So like they spent time around like cool weird adults like us for their whole lives So like they got really good at communicating these are kids who have like pretty much no adults beyond the age of eight To communicate off of so This this is all like oh is this a primal form of communication where we don't understand the way that we can Really judge up our performances and our lies or do we more innocently just project our feelings out there as they come where Richard goes like And he throws these temper tantrums on the beach is that more honest to what we are because we haven't had society conditions to be away Right and like so that's where the movie is interesting and that's why this movie so fucking frustrating because I do think there's something really interesting about that To exactly your point because like yes, but also then we have to go even further and it's like okay But is this an actual like more Primal version of how we communicate or is this how we socialize children to communicate their needs And this is what we're seeing because it's more obvious when it's coming out of an adult They are trying to be little adults as they are getting older
59:19But they don't know how to do it and the best they can do it is from memories of memories and Pictures that have no sound or motion and no one has ever taught them emotional regulation because we famously don't teach children how to regulate their emotions Certainly not in the year 1904 we tell them to shut the fuck up We tell them to be seen and not heard and they don't know how to Spank the shit out of them. Yes, so like they don't know how to express themselves So like they're not doing a bad job at acting You're just not used to seeing teenagers or adults act this way. Yes, so like Again, this movie is almost something like it's kind of funny at one point they have a tiff because There's a ship on the horizon and Richards like on the other side of the island so he can't run back to camp and light the signal fire And because they had had a fight and the lines like no, I'm not gonna I'm mad at you I'm mad at you and also what's wrong with staying here and he's like he throws this fit And he goes ahead and pulls this like bamboo boat that he has been making for how who knows how long and takes it out onto the high seas
1:00:22It's like oh look he's got like his coconuts. He's got his bananas. He's got food He's gonna make it and then the thing immediately crumbles in the surf And I just want the record to show that when we were watching this and that scene happened I looked to Harmony and I went you haven't seen send help yet We have to watch send help. So we watched send help the same day. We watched the blue again crazy day that was I Yes, Rachel McAdams can do no wrong. She's a lovely movie good to see Sam Raimi back to doing gooey horror movies Yeah, even though it's not as gross and gooey as I thought it was gonna be it's still pretty nasty It has moments that are really really nasty, but like I've seen drag me to hell. I've seen evil dead movies I know how far you can go mr. Raimi But he's out there in the surf and immediately his boat is crumbling and you have a M.A.L.I. Laughing at him Saying like Richard you've tried to do this so many times and every time it falls apart You're an idiot you're dumb dumb and then they have a fight and she throws a coconut at him And it's the acting is cute enough that it is still kind of funny Yeah, because there is there is a morbid amusement in watching these
1:01:24kind of deliberately not good performances mixed with Brooke shields who has openly admitted that she was never taught how to be an actress She wanted to be an actress, but none of the directors ever helped her. They just went yeah look at her caster Yeah, and this is why she does so many like weird indie movies now where she's great in them because they're act their directors Who actually want to work with her yeah like I she really hit her stride as an actress as she became an adult even though She is far less known for that um God, what was it your phone was auto playing clips of that lifetime movie with her what makes a family Yes, her and cherry Jones. Yes, I love that movie so much you were just like anyway because the algorithm is figured out who I am anyway Here's the highlights of this thing. I'm like look at her. She's great. Yeah, I love the medicasting of her in freeway I love all the weirdo like horror movies that she does she's so good at the midnight meet train where she's like this newty like art gallery owner who's telling Bradley Cooper. He sucks at photography. Yes, God. She's so good Brooke shields is cool. She seems very cool She seems very well adjusted and very chill and she's very open and I think openness about like
1:02:27What was it like when you were a teen and all of these weird things were happening because weird adults were all around you I think that openness is how we don't have more brook shields is Which is good but like There is silly little like live action Disney amusement to be found in this movie Well, because the way that they argue with each other is the way toddlers argue with each other like they build a clubhouse And it has a slide. Yes, because they're children. Yes, of course and honestly like sick. It's not a shelter It's not like a cabana. It's a clubhouse. Yeah, but like slides are sick no matter how old you're right on camera. Yeah They're awesome. Yeah, but when they argue like it really is like when you see those like Compilations on like vine or kick-tucker whatever which first off stop putting your children on the internet But whenever those happen there's always like little kids being like yeah, well you're a dude who had I hate you you bitch and like they don't know how to swear they don't know how to do anything But they're trying to say the meanest thing they can like you are a fuck and you should brush your teeth But like that's how the fights are in this and so like I get why people would be like this is bad
1:03:30And it's like no, it's accurate no, it's very accurate and like that's why there's something interesting here And then it gets like you know in terms of innocence There's a lot of like bleak stories about the end of humanity, you know The girl the girl with all the gifts or Threads where eventually like the humanity that we achieved up to a certain point ends and then it is fragments of that trying to pass Information on to like feral children of the next generation Like that's a sad story, but then it's like is it a sad story? Who's the villain in I am legend It seems like we'll smith is the villain in that one because he's the only one that I've he's the monster and like that is interesting But we're doing it at the blue the goon. Yeah, yeah It's weird and so like okay So then you know they have the they have their baby they have patty and like you then watch people essentially playing house like they're trying to figure out How to be parents without you take care of a baby any modeling. Yeah, how do you do this like realizing that she produces mill how much how when will natural instincts kick in?
1:04:30Yes, because that's also a weird thing and it's really hard to talk about these sorts of things without it becoming like a weird runway into Bio essentialism, but like I'm in my mid 30s and I'm very glad that I no longer have like baby fever Like my body is like that was such a thing when you and I were still like early on And you're still in our 20s. Oh my god. It was so bad. Someone would have a kid and you're just like oh god Yeah, I don't know. Yeah, it's so bad, but now I'm 36 in my body. Well the new baby smell Yeah, my body is like yeah, don't worry about it. We're done here. You're not in your prime. We don't care But like yeah, when you and I first started dating like you were like I don't want to have kids But my body doesn't know that. Yeah, my body doesn't know that and so it was it was bad like I obviously love your fair moments. It's like my favorite thing in the world Thank you When we first started dating and when I was in like peak baby fever, it was bad Yeah, you were in your late 20s. Oh my god. You know, that's when you're you're you're past a certain point It's like well, you should be settling in now. You're reaching your maturity Yeah, like you would come home from work And it would be like three in the morning. I just be sitting on the couch and you would sit down next to me
1:05:34And just like the smell that would radiate off of you from sitting down. I was like You need to put a baby in me like it was so crazy And I'm so glad that that is just done. Yes. Thank God like these different primal primal feelings because we you know We think that we're we're civilized because we you know, we're monkeys who know how to wear shoes, but like no No, we're just animals at the end of the day. We're fucking animals That is what the movie tries to display and one of the ways it goes about doing it sure is fucked up So like you have the drum people and they're doing some sort of ritualistic human sacrifice on the other side of the island at one point When we see them sacrifice people it is someone who has like some sort of lighter paint or clay on his skin So it is a bunch of island natives killing someone with what the white devil printed on them whatever it is And Richard is like I'm gonna kill the drum people. We're better than the drum people It has this very like we refuse to some come to the barbaric nature of the people who live here. We are happy happen to be here, but we're better at it than them
1:06:40Yeah, it's fucking weird. I don't like it. I don't like it again. And it doesn't need to be here There's no reason other than the source material That you need to even cut off part of the island Yeah, there's no reason for what does it add nothing like I guess like the vague thread of like they have to be in this spot They can't explore further But like you know the temptations outside of the garden of Eden or something I guess I guess but then later They're like playing around in like the mud and they start to paint each other with like the the the the the the the sand or whatever and it's like Definitely implied blackface. Yeah, it's weird where it's like oh you are just barely skirt and buy on this not being that but boy I don't like it. Yeah, you know you have mr. Fini looking like Albert Einstein with a telescope Just being like no that couldn't possibly be them look at them That they are not the children I don't recognize I don't recognize them and I'm like oh Yeah, it has nothing to the story except for like him being like no those are not the kids that I I recognize like that They end up finding the literally anyway. Yeah, and so it doesn't even add anything
1:07:44Yeah, and so that yeah, there's this thing of God where Emeline steps on a stonefish and you ask me what kind of fish was that and I say it's a stonefish and then you look it up and go You are right and I go yeah, I know Um, but it's a it's an extremely venomous fish and yeah, you don't survive that correct But like they take it to a giant stone face that is supposed to be the eyes of God and then that is What makes her live? So now we're getting into like the religious things of like even on this deserted island God perseveres like you you thought you thought kids after patty died And you got a little bit older you started to question everything you have richer going I don't Hear the sun hiss when it hits the water. I thought I did but I don't Santa isn't real Patty said you could dig a hole to China and that's not real There's a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow and that's not real But what about heaven? Where where are parents? Where's where's God? They start to then question the things that Adults told them all in equal measures
1:08:48You are questioning Santa Claus on the exact same caliber you are questioning the existence of the Almighty And you need to have the stone figure to say Guys, don't worry God will see Santa Claus didn't deliver presence for you on this deserted island. He forgot about you But God won't see but also But is it their God or is it the God of the drum people? Who knows who fucking knows But like that's the vagueness of this story and just presenting the idea that at least these characters believe in a higher power Yeah, and then of course this movie famously has a very ambiguous ending because their baby eats the berries that make you go to sleep forever Listen, we rush to the end of this story so fucking fast where Emeline says hey, can we go back to the original Camp that we had with patty I want to see it and she hasn't been back there because it was seeing his corpse and the The crabs crawling out of his body on the beach was too gross for her Richard goes back and looks at the bones to be like oh, that's what's really inside of us
1:09:51But she like doses off in the boat with little patty and the boat starts to drift away and the babies like I will throw the ores into the ocean And then Richard swims out and it's like Richard there's sharks We can't get the ores and then they just drift out to see like so much happened within like two minutes Yeah in terms of a of a scary deserted island That's what will happen like one one mistake and you die But yes, they drift out to see and they're out there for a long time And the baby also put the never wake up berries in the boat and starts eating them Fuck babies are stupid One of their most well-known qualities Babies are constantly trying to kill them so it's the thing they are and like again like Narratively the idea that They did not have the maturity of adults to do a good enough job teaching their baby to not do the stupid things that'll get it killed or To do a better job of keeping their eye on it because those are things that are passed down by a mother or a grandmother instead of you know
1:10:52The lost leading the lost or in like a very morbid very true fact It's why so many families has so many kids back then because it was sort of expected Law of averages you're gonna lose one yeah, it's like it's really dark, but like that's real a lot of statistics about The the population going down but realistically most of the babies that were counted for a census Did not survive past the first couple years? It's why the the childhood mortality weight was literally high so like when it's like the average life expectancy is so low Yeah, so like when conservatives are talking about how like oh well the the birth rates are dropping We're all gonna die and it's actually not dropping that much It's pretty consistent with with a lot of stuff, but yeah, like that's where we race to the end of the story And then it's left with this ambiguous fucking ending. Yeah, where mr. Funy finds their boat and is like oh, but are they alive because After patty eats the berries the two of them are basically like we got to have the the mist ending Yeah, like the family's got to go together so fuck it And so then like they also eat the berries and then when they find the boat
1:11:54It's like are they dead or are they just sleeping and they say like oh, I think they're just sleeping But it's like okay, but is that true or are they just saying that to make him feel better because they finally found the kids after all these years and they're dead Yes, like so close but so far so close so far This movie this fucking movie Harmony The blue lagoon is asking you to the prom god damn it I'm so glad I don't have to answer this question. Yeah, is this a yes or no? And maybe or are you buying them a tickets they can go on their own? I mean, it's a fat no Yeah All right, it's a fat no there's stuff that like I like you could recut this movie Cut 10 15 minutes off. It's an infinitely better movie. It's a way more watchable movie. It's a way less fucked up movie The behind the scenes stuff is still what it is, but like it's a better movie Um, I was really trying to figure figure something out like I was really trying to figure out my thoughts because inevitably I was going to have to answer this yeah, but like fucking Randall Cliser also made Flight of the navigator And you and I watched that movie and yes, it's nice to hear Paul Rubin's be a robot, but also
1:12:57Like it's so boring. Mm-hmm so many aspects of that movie are is just showing kids things They've never seen which is just beautiful vistas and locations that up on a big screen that is so captivating And to some degree blue lagoon's doing that you know It's got beautiful underwater shots like the beaches are beautiful the water is beautiful I'm not even gonna make a joke about the gills. Yeah, beautiful Because I'm not going there But like there's so much stuff that looks really really good and if you've never seen it before It looks like an adventure. It looks whimsical It looks perfect and picturesque because you've never seen this in such detail and color And that's cool, but also Fuck man Like what do you even do with this movie like the big romantic? Quotes sex scene of this movie is like five minutes long Of them just repeatedly fucking around the entire island and it's shot in a way that is gross It's really like it could be it could do the classy thing where it's like all right
1:13:57That's enough, you know We saw them making some moves or they did it one time now like Pan up to some fucking birds or something like that even cuts to two sea turtles fucking at one point Like did you could do something but instead it just decides to just keep going and keep going and it's so fucking Egregious so like what is the purpose of blue lagoon outside of just being an artifact? You know the book is maybe interesting I can't speak on it But like as a book of its time where you're exploring thoughts without having to display the imagery that the movie is putting on screen Like it is an artifact that is compelling for its time, but what do you do with the movie? I really don't know like what does this movie do that other movies don't do? I'm like surely some stuff that is worth discussion like we certainly tried for this episode, but like God it like the fucking underaged nudity of Multiple people below the age of 18 below the age of 16 The fucking super racist shit like it is An irresponsibly made movie man. There's maybe sucks
1:14:59Yeah, and I feel really bad for like the The very young people who saw this movie and it wasn't careful They got stuff that they needed to get out of it and we could get something out of Other movies that are better little darlings comes out this year And it is far less disgusting and it's about young girl sexuality I agree completely and you know This is just one of those examples where like we can't give you a time machine and make you go back in time and make a movie not Be impactful to you So if you're listening to this and this is a movie that is impactful to you like we don't judge you for that It's fine, but like it's a movie it's a movie that is As a as a film it belongs in the past tense. Yeah, you know They made two other sequels to this movie one of which with me Lajovic which is apparently just Really and in like a plot for plot remake of the original one And it has a 0% on the tomato meter so as much as critics hated this movie they really hated that one. Yeah, so It's just Something that we did almost 50 years ago that we thought was a good idea and fortunately
1:16:00Maybe not specifically this movie, but if this movie was a piece of learning Don't do that. Nope. Yeah, we we learned from this movie and other movies with Brooksheel's like yep that We found the line and we crossed it several times over as a society and now we're gonna stop Yep, I look at gonna stop putting that on screen. We're gonna stop putting it in jeans ads where we talk about how nothing gets between her and her calvans heinous work and We're gonna stop talking about this movie. It's very cool Yes, go go do something like that Go go put some good into the world. Yes, go take a shower I'm I'm genuinely fucking just noping out of that recommendation on this one, but I'm gonna be real. I was gonna suggest that before you said it So I'm really glad that you did okay cool. I'm glad that we're married and we're on the same page You know at the end of this episode at the end of the day This cast did nothing wrong. Nope, Brooke shields innocent Innocent in this movie innocent. She didn't do a damn thing wrong. She just did things. She was just doing her job The true innocence of the blue lagoon is that these actors did not ask for any of this shit. Correct
