Texans Free Up Cap Space, Convert Pitre's Contract

They converted part of defensive bag Jalen Petra's contract into a signing bonus, which saves them $5.1 million right now. That bonus there available cap up to $28.7 million heading into the weekend. Petra has shown as one of the top nickel corners over the last two seasons. He signed a three year extension last off season for $42 million, making him the highest paid player at that position in the league. Last year alone, he grabbed four interceptions and broke up 14 passes, proving his value on defense. Looking ahead, Petra has $9.5 million due in salary for 2027, with $8.5 million of that guaranteed, and another $9.5 million in 2028. Meanwhile, the Texans ranked 12th in cap space for next year, and they're set to release Pro Bowl running back Joe Mixon, which should save them $8.5 million.
