Hungarian tennis player Panna Advardi faced a frightening ordeal when she got threatening WhatsApp messages on her personal phone. Around midnight, an unknown sender demanded she throw her next match or face harm to her family. They claimed to know her relatives' addresses, cars, and phone numbers, and even sent family photos plus a picture of a gun. Advardi quickly shares screenshots of the threats in an Instagram post on March 6th. She alerted the WTA supervisor right away and had her parents contact the local consulate. Police responded fast, sending officers to her match and checking on her parents and grandmother's homes. She also filed a police report. The experience left her shaken, especially since she felt the WTA brushed it off by noting similar incidents with other players. Advardi worried about how her private details got out and pushed back on any sense of normalcy around such dangers for athletes. Meanwhile, the WTA emailed players denying any data breach in their system.
