About this episode
We wanna hear your stories about the times you’ve accidentally broken the rules somewhere foreign to you.
Maybe you went into a temple with your shoes on, when you weren’t supposed to. Maybe you had a drink at a sacred place and were forbidden to enter again. Or maybe you even wound up in a brush with the local police for something minor that’s not against the rules where you live.
Tell us where you went. What happened? Why did you get in trouble? And how did you ultimately get out of it? Give us a call at (315) 992-7902 and leave a message telling us your name and story. Or leave us a voice memo at [email protected].

Hey, it's Kelly McEvers, co-host of Atlas Obscura, and I am here with a request. When we travel to another country or place, we do research to find out things to do. But sometimes we forget that this place also has rules and regulations to follow, just like everywhere else. And those rules aren't always the same as our rules, which can land us in some dicey situations. I, for one, have forgotten to take off my shoes indoors. I've not worn modest enough clothing inside a temple. I've even pointed at someone once. When in the culture I was in, it was a totally rude thing to do. I've been interrogated for carrying a small case that looked like a camera case, when actually it was a breast milk pump. Which brings me to my request. We want to hear your stories about the times you accidentally broke the rules when you were visiting somewhere. Tell us where you went, tell us what happened, why did you get in trouble, and how did you ultimately get out of it.
Give us a call at 315-992-7902 and leave a message telling us your name and story. Our mailbox will cut you off after three minutes, so please call in if you get disconnected, or better you can record a voice memo and send it to us at helloatatlasobscura.com. We can't wait to hear from you. Until next time.
