Target's New Store in Durham: Ellerbe Square Project

The company is buying one-third of the 60-acre property between Interstate 85 and downtown, with plans to tear down the former mall and, movie theater for a project called Eller Bay Square. Plans are still in early stages, with no opening dateset. It confirmed the move, but noted it depends on getting all the needed approvals. Details on what will go in the other 40 acres remain unclear, as the property owner, Northwood investors from Charlotte, has not shared more. The site goes back to 1960 when Northgate Mall first opened, but is shut down in 2020 and has been vacant since. Northwood bought it in 2018 for $34,500,000 and dropped earlier mixed-use ideas after locals, complained about missing affordable housing.
