Syracuse Basketball Star Detained by ICE

A former Syracuse University basketball player is now in immigration and customs enforcement custody. 26-year-old John Bull Ajak was arrested in Syracuse, New York, and transferred to a processing center in Pennsylvania. Originally from South Sudan, he fled to a refugee camp in Kenya as a child and came to the United States at age 14 through a basketball camp, Opportunity. Ajak played on Syracuse's men's team from 2020 to 2023. In recent months, he faced four arrests for disorderly conduct and trespassing at the New House School where he once studied. Those happened on December 17, January 30, January 31 and February 18. His former coach, Jim Bohim, called the detention heartbreaking, saying it removes good people from the country. Ajak has shared his gratitude for the chances he got in America and his dream to create opportunities for kids back in Africa.

1:00After his last arrest, Ajak was released pre-trial but missed a court date on February 23, leading to a bench warrant. He had been homeless and was working to return to graduate school after his student visa expired. Officials have not confirmed if the ice hold connects to those local arrests.
