This bunker-like space measures 28 meters wide and 180 meters long, bigger than any other on the network. A 3.5 meter thick concrete floor acts like a huge anchor to resist water pressure that could otherwise lift the whole structure. Tunneling wrapped up recently with the final boring machine breaking through into the cavern. This marks the end of major metro rail digging in Sydney for the foreseeable future. Thick concrete walls reinforced with steel and sealed by a waterproof membrane are next to poor, ensuring everything stays dry and stable. Project leaders call it a game changer for city travel. Sydney Metro's chief says the station will link directly to both the M1 metro line and heavy rail in the central business district, creating a true transport hub.
