Steve Wilks Returns to App State

0:00On May 2nd, Steve Wilps is making his way back home to Boone, North Carolina. The former Carolina Panthers interim head coach is now a special assistant in Aval agent state's athletics department. He played there as a mountaineer from 1987 to 1991, and even coached defensive backs back in 2001. This move lets him team up with the director of athletics, the football crew, and development staff. He's got 30 years of coaching under his belt, including 17 in the NFL. Last year, he wrapped up as defensive coordinator for the New York Jets before they let him go in December. Before that, he went six and six as Panthers interim coach in 2022 and even ran the Arizona Cardinals as head coach in 2018. Fans and folks around Charlotte know him well. He grew up there, started West Charlotte High, and advised the local 49ers this year. Apple agent state wants his experience to connect with alumni and boost their name, image, and likeness efforts. It's a full circle moment for a guy who shape defenses at every level.

1:01Wilkes has already hung around the program this spring, and Diggs would head coach Dowell Loggins is building. Last season, Mart, Loggins is first year calling shots, with the team finishing five and eight. Wilkes sees Big Potential and wants to pour back into the place that launched him. With his NFL break giving him space, expect Wilkes to elevate AppState's game on and off the field, bridging college routes to pro polish.
