Special Olympics Winter Games Kick Off in Alaska

The Special Olympics Winter Games kicked off Friday evening in Anchorage, Alaska, with an opening ceremony at Betty Davis East Anchorage High School. 200 athletes and partners from across the state are taking part through the weekend. They're competing in 4 hockey, snow-shoeing, alpine skiing, snowboarding, and cross-country skiing. Nordic skiing and snow-shoeing events are at East High School, while Clark Middle School hosts Floorhockey. Downhill skiing and snowboarding happen at hilltop ski area. All the action is open to the public, so families and fans can cheer them on. A mother-daughter team from the Tanana Valley, Julie and Linda Anderson, are jumping into Floorhockey for the first time against other squads. They've practiced on their own and even against college players, but they're feeling some nerves about facing new opponents. These gains follow close on the heels of the United States, sweeping gold medals at the Milan Cortino Winter Olympics. American teams beat Canada twice, marking a big win after more than 40 years.
