Somalian Runner on Trial for Sexual Assault

0:00On April 7th, a 26-year-old Somalian runner, named Abdena Sir Elmi, faces two counts of sexual assault after an incident last April 22nd. Around 10.30 pm in Bournemouth Gardens, Dorset, he denies the charges at Winchester Crown Court, where he needs a Somalian interpreter. Prosecutors say he targeted an 18-year-old girl, waiting alone at a bus stop. Earlier that night, the girl had been out with her boyfriend and a friend in Bournemouth Town Center. Her boyfriend headed home, and her friend's mom showed up in a two-seater car, unable to give both a ride. That's when CCTV caught Elmi hanging around, eyeing the group before making his move once she was by herself. She told police he put his arm around her, let her pass the bus stop to a secluded bench, and assaulted her despite her resistance. She kicked him off, and escaped. He first denied anything happened, but now claims it was consensual. Meanwhile, footage shows him wandering and checking out other young women that evening.

1:00Elmi's been training with Bournemouth Athletics Club since October 2024, and even spent time with stars like Mofera and Bashir Abdi. He was staying at a migrant hotel in the area, though his asylum status isn't clear. The trial still underway, shedding light on a serious accusation against someone chasing athletic dreams in a new country.
