Skubal Shines, Tigers Triumph in Spring Training

The Detroit Tigers beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-1 in spring training on Saturday, March 14th, at TD Ball Park in Dunedin, Florida. Tariq Skuball delivered a strong start for Detroit, which now stands at 5 wins, 11 losses, and 4 ties in Great Fruit League play. Earlier this week, Skuball had said he would not use the new Automated Ball Strike Challenge system, leaving those calls to his catchers. But in the first inning, he tapped his cap to challenge a called ball on a 96 mile per hour fastball, overturning it for a strikeout against. Davis Schneider Skuball went four and two-thirds innings, allowing one run on three hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. He returned from pitching for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, and looked sharp, averaging 97 miles per hour on his fastball and, topping out at 99. Meanwhile, the Tigers' offense broke through against Blue Jays' starter, Max Scherzer, who tossed four and two-thirds scoreless innings before relievers.

The bullpen closed it out over the final four innings, with Birch Smith and Sean Guenther looking solid for opening day spots.
