Singleton Retires as SC High School League Commissioner

0:00On March 2nd, Jerome Singleton is stepping down as commissioner of the South Carolina High School League no later than July 1st, 20, 27, once they find a suitable replacement. The executive committee made the announcement on Monday. As 66 years old, he still had several years left on his contract. Singleton has led the lead for more than 20 years, starting back in July 2005. The group has overseen high-squat athletics in the state for over a century, operating as a public entity, but not a full state agency. Lawmakers have ramped up pressure on the league since late summer 2023, with some calling for Singleton's exit. They introduced House Bill 4163 to dissolve the current setup and form a new governing body instead. That bill faced the delay last week when the House of Representatives pushed the vote to this Tuesday. It's now unclear if the plan will move forward unchanged or get adjustments in light of the retirement news.
