0:00On this February 26th, this episode is brought to you by NordVPN and fast, reliable online privacy. Links in the episode description. Here's what's shaping the UK right now. A security guard at a B&M store in Preston Lancashire nearly died a year ago after a shoplifter stabbed him in the thigh over just 20 pounds of stolen goods. The guard, Jeff in his 40s, chased a 27-year-old thief, Andrej McCulski, right outside the discount shop on Carlisle Street. Staff called 999 right away as heavy bleeding started, and three medically trained officers rushed over to apply tourniquets and direct pressure. Jeff was airlifted to Royal Preston Hospital, where surgeons found the kitchen knife had sliced almost all the way through his thigh during emergency operations. The attack shook everyone involved, with police later noting it could have been fatal without their quick first aid and the surgeon skills. Jeff survived, and later thanked the team that saved him in an emotional reunion.

1:01Meanwhile, officers caught McCulski just 45 minutes later, while patrolling nearby, matching witness descriptions and finding the knife plus. Blood on his clothes. It turned out he'd been on a spree that day, hitting shops, stealing a bike, and pulling a knife for a laptop robbery. In the end, a jury convicted him of wounding with intent, and last October, he got 22 years and six months behind bars, with concurrent. Sentences for the other crimes, he must serve at least 17 years before parole.
