Sheinbaum Invites King Felipe to World Cup

Earlier this month on February 24th, Sheenbaum extended the invite, highlighting shared language, culture and history. This follows the King's recent comments acknowledging abuses during Spain's conquest of what is now Mexico. Tensions peaked under Scheinbaum's predecessor, who demanded an apology in 2019 for violence and disease that killed thousands during the Aztec Empire's fall. She skipped inviting the King to her inauguration last year. The King made history as the first Spanish monarch to publicly recognize that passed harm while viewing an exhibit on indigenous Mexican women. Scheinbaum welcomed it as a step toward reconciliation, even if not fully what she hoped for.
