Before we get to our guests take on the new offense and Sean Manion and Jalen Hertz and what this is going to look like, we have a listener here who's been here live with us for a while, and you did say a little while ago, probably about an hour ago, that you had
a bad analogy to give on the AJ thing, do you, first of all, do you remember what that analogy was and will you share it, and if you don't, because I told her you might have forgotten. I'm scared. No, I do know what it is. Okay. Wait a minute. Before I do this was the person that asked you about the analogy was Ashley? It wasn't Ashley. No. Okay. No, because when you said, I'm scared. I said a listener here. Okay. I don't appear with this. I don't want to give it now, because Ashley's sitting in. I'll be a little embarrassed. What do you mean? Because it's a relationship analogy. It's because you asked me about emotionally unavailable in the break. I didn't know. I didn't understand what that meant. It's just. But wasn't this about AJ? What does this have to do with AJ? I mean, I guess he could make the argument. He is kind of emotionally unavailable. No. Okay. Here's the analogy is this. Say like, say like, you know, you're dating somebody and they're like, they're really like a lot. Like it like AJ. They're a lot. I'm just trying to tie it on again. I think Ashley know I'm going with you, but they're, but they're, they're, they're a lot,
but they're, they're great. They're great. Like you have good time. They'll have good time. Like y'all, y'all hang out. Y'all, y'all. Sure. Sounds like AJ. You know one of those things where you know they get on your nerves, but they're, they're a good time. Then you like, you like hanging, you enjoy their time. So it's kind of that's the kind of situation I think we dealing with AJ and, and Jalen. Like they're, he's a lot, but I mean, they're a good time. Like hanging out with him. I'm afraid I clean that up a lot. I'll just be honest. I'm scared. Yeah. I cleaned it up. Yeah. I got to say it's not one of your best analogies. I see where you're going. No, but, but I, because I, because Ashley, I don't, you know, I, you know, just, we are when you sit near with somebody and they, you know, they're actually looking at your sandwich. Well, I mean, you, you're the one that teased this on the air, but I'm saying, you, you, you know what you know, I'm getting like, you say, hey, you know, I, you know, like, you're like, I can't quit you because, you know, you know, there's, there's good times. I do wonder if push comes to shove. If AJ would, like, if the Eagles say to him, all right, we're going to trade you, but you're going to the raiders or you're going to the dolphins.
If he would actually one out, or if there's only like four teams, he wants to, well, yesterday, and the dolphins, who is, why don't, why don't you still there? Yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. I mean, AJ could be with Batullo again, K.P., which, which would be an amazing and a good relationship. And what if they, what if he went down and just recklessly speculated, there we go. And they, and that division, you could, some would say it might be why I don't, the bills and Patriots are in there. Who would say that? I would say that. I would say that. Yeah. Yeah. For the sake of his art. You don't have to pick the dolphins. For the sake of his art. Okay, runner up in the, well, it's hard to go back to the Super Bowl and that knocks the Patriots out. Yeah. So it's the bills with a rookie head coach. Yeah. Basically what you're saying, they get to beat the jets twice a year. Would AJ sign up for that? Yeah. Man, maybe. All right. Guys, what do we think of this new office? It feels to me like the elephant in the room, but all these other things, you know, it could be a requo, and it could be a pass for us, or it could be a tight end, safety, whatever they do. The bottom line is they need the offense to get back to a level of respectability.
It just wasn't at last year. I mean, it was, it was one of the worst offense in the league. They never got a mud, including that playoff game, where, you know, the zombie Niners came in here and held them to 19 points. So, what's your confidence level and what do you think this is going to look like with the new offense? I think it had to be done. When you look at last year and you look at the last two years, they needed to modernize the offense. They needed to add more elements to the offense. I know Jalen Hertz has his preferences, Nick Seriani has his preferences, Kevin Petulo had his preferences, Jeff Stoutlin had their preferences, and they added it all up, and it looked terrible. Last year, we were talking about it weekend and week out. So, what's it going to look like? I think you're going to see Jalen Hertz under center more. I think you're going to see more of the run game being married to the past game, meaning more under center play action, and I think you're going to see more throws to the middle of the field. Now, all of these things are things that Jalen Hertz has not done consistently, he's done it at times. Sometimes he's looked good doing it, sometimes he hasn't looked good doing it, but I think they needed to have that conversation where they said, Jalen, you might prefer X, but that's
not getting us to where we want to go. We need to make changes, we believe in you, we think you can do it, and make a commitment to it. When they got rid of Jeff Stoutlin, that told me, this is wholesale changes. This isn't about a little tweak here and there, so that's my expectation, maybe I'll be wrong, but that's my expectation for what it looked like. I mean, because the bottom line is this, as much success as this team has had. I think it should have been telling who was it, Robert Salah, that they tried to run at the end of the game. Well, they went back, Salah went back, he said in his head, so when they played the Jets in 2023, and kind of knew what defensive play in the last drive of this year's playoff, which is amazing. That's telling. Yeah, it is. That's telling, and that should tell you everything that you need to know, and it's not. Just like Shail said here and said, that, you know, Jalen needs to evolve, the coaches, everybody needs to evolve in this situation. It's nothing wrong with that. That doesn't mean that you're a lesson of a player. It means that the league has caught up to what you did that made you successful.
The league has constantly changed, so everybody in this situation is culpable when it comes to how anemic this offense was. Ashton, I wonder, she'll use the word committed to it. That's to me going to be the tell. Are they really committed to it? If you go back two years ago, right, they bring Kellen Moore in, and I think that that was a step towards evolving the offense, and it looked different the first four weeks. It wasn't, it was bumpy, but it was different. And then they kind of reverted back to, hey, let's just run the football and win games. Like, I wonder, are they going to be committed to this, or if it's choppy early, do they just do what it takes to win, which could kind of be some of the always? They have to be, in my opinion, they have to be committed to the creativity that is going to be required to change. Last season, there was commitment to nothing. They kept changing what they wanted to do, which led to so much confusion on the offensive side of the ball. Jeff Stoutland, no disrespect to him at all, will go down as one of the greatest coaches here in Philadelphia ever. But to me, the vibe I got talking to players in the locker room was the offensive line and the running backs and stout wanted it one way, and everyone else wanted it a different
way. And there was no harmony ever with this offense. So if no one else commits here, you're going to have a problem. They have to go fully, in my opinion, to the creative new way that the Eagles have to play offense. It can no longer be, do what it takes to win, because while that works at times, it bites your in playoffs. And we saw it last year, and we all knew it was coming. Well, that we did. I mean, you could feel, whether it was the first round of the second, and you could feel it just they didn't have enough to have four games of good offense with the way they played all year. Elliott, do you buy? They will stay committed to it. No. I don't. I think this will be something they'll try, but at Borderline, the first time of one and two, oh, and one, God forbid one and three, they'll go back to exactly what they've done the past few years. And I get that the offense needed to change. I understand why people say that. But I find it interesting that for years, all I heard out of that building was a wins or win. Who cares how you get it? It's not about schematic stuff. It's about winning. It's about being physical. It's about running the ball, taking care of the ball.
Now all this sudden, it's, well, actually, we want to win with marrying the run to the past and doing all these, like, they didn't win last year, because the offensive line was bad. That's it. And I think they're overreacting. And maybe it'll work. And maybe it'll be awesome at it. But I find it hard to believe they'll have more success with this new offense than they have the way they have in the past few years, which is focusing on running the ball, taking care of the ball. And that's how they won. So I think this is an overreaction. And I don't think they'll stick with it. See, I didn't hear it that way. I don't perceive it that way. The way I perceive it is this. Your concepts and the way that you're formation, the way that you run things are antiquated, right? The way that you get to, say for instance, the way that you get to the run game, with the formation and everything. So when you say they're going to do the same thing, I don't think you can't, Ellen, because it's predictable. But this is what I feel. I feel that there's going to be some elements that you're going to be familiar with, but it's just the way that you get to those concepts. Because, for example, when I think about, when I play, we play against it, and then after this coach, everything that they did came off of play action, everything that they
did. And then after that action, where Faith Manning was on the center, he would do the run fake to Adrian James, and either he would give him the ball, or he would dump it off to, who was it? Who was it tied in? I forgot the name. Dallas Clark. Dallas Clark. Dallas Clark. He would dump it off, and he would throw it to Marvin Harrison or whatever. That's where it looks different. It's almost, and when you say, marry to pass to the run, that's immediately what I think of. Because you're going to show, you can show run, like with your line up and everything, and you can fire off the ball, but with that action freezes the linebackers, and it gives you time to throw across the middle of the throw over the top of something like that. So that's why I think it's coming from it, and you have to get comfortable with the timing of that offense, and believe in that people are going to be where they're supposed to be when you throw the football. So I agree with all that, but I guess what I'm saying is the issue with the offense last year was the offensive line, and they can run any scheme they want. But if they get the same offensive line play next year, it will not matter what they're trying to marry and run. It might help, but I think ultimately, the reason for the failures last year was not
the scheme. It was the lack of offensive line play. Well, I think, I think when you say the scheme, part of it to me was the fact that you're used to playing a certain way, and if you're being fair, the quarterback held the ball sometimes too long. For sure. Yeah. Well, that part is why I'm worried about this offense. This offense, from what we understand requires, get it out. But see, this is the difference, Joe, and this is where you have to be comfortable, because this is where I remember my first game in NFL, and I always talk about it playing against Damirino. And I had the best seed in the house because Damirino was thrown to a spot. And I remember it was one, he threw one pass and the receiver was incomplete. He cussed him out. He said, Damn it. You need to be there when I throw the football, because it was, it was timing. They want to get back to that, because let me tell you what happens when you have a rhythm offense. It throws a defense off. I'm done carrying around bulky drinks. And I'm definitely done cleaning melted candy out of my pockets. So yeah, I traded them both in for fruity rainbow five hour energy shots.

Because if you say fences, you come out in the game and you're hitting with a quick hits, quick hits, quick hits, and as a past rusher, I'm trying to get up to field, but the ball's coming out quick. And all of a sudden, you step back and like, oh heck, they're going deep. That throws everything off because you're so used to, you get into that lull of that rhythm of the game and that timing offense that when they do take a shot, you're not prepared for it and then it also, if you're having success with play action, if you're having success by showing them, like this is what it, like when you show a defensive line in the football, then we follow the football, right? And if you start getting there, you head in the ball off, we plan to run, plan to run. We pull the ball out, it freezes everything for like a split second and then you get them over the top, it changes everything and we don't do that. We're so predictable that we know when we line up, we don't motion another of that stuff, we just run the play. Is there a big difference that carol say between doing that, like from under center and doing that shotgun?
Yes. Okay. Because I have to as a defensive lineman, I have to respect, like if he's under center, and the back is behind him, I have to respect that action, especially with a quarterback like Jalen, because it limits what I could do as a pass rusher, because with a quarterback of his ability, say if I try to take it inside, rushing, relaying, he can easily pull that ball out and run around. So you have to respect that run action, especially with a runner back like Sayquan. Everybody has to play a little stouter. The linebackers have to play up on the line a little bit more because there is the threat of a run game. Look, yeah, there's no question the offense conceptually is a good one, right? She owes a reason why I have to teams the league or more now are running a variation of this. The question I have is, at this stage of his career, is this the best offense for Jalen Hurts? Like, his tendencies to me don't match up with the way this scheme seems to play when you watch the Niners, and I watch the Rams, and I watch the Seahawks, and all these teams that run this now.
His tendencies are not this. So he, I think this is going to be a big challenge for him. I really do. No doubt about it. No doubt about it. Yeah, it is. And when he was talking, what stood out to me is that if this worked, it's supposed to make Jalen Hurts his life easier. Yes, that's why you see it being run with Brock Purdy, and Sam Darnold, and quarterbacks you say those guys are more talented than Jalen Hurts. Why do their passing offense look like this, and the Eagles passing offense looks something different. He's not wrong. His strengths so far in the NFL have not been the strengths you would say would work in an offense like this. So he's got to work at it, and I will say the one thing you can say about his career throughout the course of his career, he's been willing to get better year in and year out. I think he got to a point where he said, he said he told us, he said it's going to look how I want it to look. He likes what he looks. Someone in the organization needs to get through to him Jalen. We got to get to another level. You can do these things. You're not going to be comfortable right away. That's the whole point of coaching. That's what I think is comfortable being uncomfortable.
And Ashland, you're at all those press conferences with me, so I'm curious to your perspective, it feels like the messaging has always been, we run what's best for the players. We build the offense around the players, and now the messaging is, well, any player can run any offense. So we can just pick and choose, right? So it feels like a big change in philosophy. The tone has absolutely changed, but they had to change. You cannot, in my, you can't give the keys to one player and say, we're going to do just what you want, what you're comfortable with. I will now, I'll go back to training camp last year. It was Barrett Brooks and I, we were talking to Jalen after a press conference, and Jalen said the offense is going to run the way that I see fit, the way that I am comfortable with it. I think that's a major red flag. You're putting way too much responsibility on one player. The Eagles have to run Sean Manian and Nick Steer on his offense, and Jalen Hertz has to take the training wheels off and grow and be comfortable with this new offense. Or else it's not going to work. It's too much to put on one player, Hugh. It's too much pressure, and I don't think it's even fair to Jalen Hertz. You have to ask him to do that. And that's, that's the bottom line. You have to be comfortable being uncomfortable because NFL is constantly changing, it's constantly
evolving. We've seen that. And in order for him, I think Jalen is a phenomenal quarterback. He's accomplished a lot in his first five years, but at some point the NFL catches up with you and you have to evolve if you want to stay. So I agree with everything all of you guys have said, but it doesn't always work because we want it to work. You know, like, it doesn't, it doesn't. I mean, like, the Phillies could tell Trey Turner, we need more home runs. You're now have to be a 40 home run hitter. That's not his game. I'm very skeptical. Guess what's going to happen. It's going to work the way we think it's going to work. And I, I just wonder, when the play breaks down, Jalen Hertz has thousands and thousands of reps of doing something a certain way, and my guess is it's going to be very hard when the bullet starts to fly, when the game starts, that he'll just sit back there, trust the offense and throw in two and a half seconds. It's going to be even harder to stick with it if they're O and one. Of course. Yeah. But that's what it feels. Yeah. So that's a question. Are you going to have a quick thing? All last year that Phillies told me we're not going to chase anymore. We're not going to chase Nick Castellanos and Trey Turner since they were seven chase pitches.
You could say all these things you want, athletes that do something a certain way, and they have its success like Jalen. I think it's exceedingly hard to imagine he's just going to play in the pocket and throw the ball in two and a half seconds and throw it through to a spot where no one is and trust someone's going to be there. So you have to be willing to lose for a little. Or they could try it and we have to accept it might not work. So y'all doing the extreme and I get I get why you're doing it, but it doesn't have to be that extreme. You could take this in chunks because we just sat here and said the defense got better. So you might pull the offense back just a little bit. It might be it might be slow going. It might be. This offense can't go back more. Oh my god. Don't tell me that. Yeah. What are you doing? No, what I mean by that is this. It might not be as dynamic initially. It might not be the passing game is a big integral part about it initially. It might just be the running game. It might be more a running game set your team. It might be more of winning games seven to ten.
You know, things of that nature. Ten. Are y'all going to quit? Right? I'm trying to. No, no one. What you saying is right. I'm trying to make y'all feel better. You're the best. The best case scenario. You use those words to make the people feel better. I'm getting sick over here. Listen, seven. The best case scenario is you win games. You run the ball. The defense is good. And then you get to November. And all the players start saying, oh, it's clicking now. All of a sudden they have a great passing game. Oh, you're getting to dissent. It's true. You're in the dividend. It is not realistic to expect. If September, if they come out and you tell me in September, this one of the best offense is in the NFL, I'll be shocked to that. I'm trying to say that from all. I mean, no, I mean, she'll be mine. She'll need to come more. Because when I try to tell these y'all who's that, they always yell in the screaming. You lucky cow. I said we're going to hear. I said we're going to have pacing. We know. You said no. That's exactly what you just said. No. No, I'm saying he better come. I didn't say y'all talk about losing games. Yes. He better come in here and win games. I never said he got to come in here and lose games. If we score 10 points, we might lose. No, if you score 10 points in your defense plan, well, you'll be like, hey, man, win as
a win. Go get me Max Crosby. All right. I think what they're going to do is try it on first down. And then when it's second and 10, he'll be right back and shock. Good thing. He can't do that. Because I'm telling you another thing before we move forward. Jaylen, we're going to have to figure out what we're going to do with Jaylen, too. He don't really well. Of course. Hey, hey, it's what they say. The chicken's coming home to Roosh. This is going to be a come to Jesus. Oh, yes. I mean, he's got to play. Otherwise, I think they will have a new quarterback pretty soon. All right. We've had a great hour here with Chio and Ashton. Sorry. It's about to be. It would not quite work. But before we say goodbye to our guests, you, we have to ask them to give us a prediction. Rest of Eagles free agency. What do you feel on Chio? Something the Eagles will do. Attempt to do. The AJ thing. Give us a prediction for the rest of the next, let's say, a few days in Eagles free agency. All right. Let's take a dark throw here and say the Eagles will trade for Vikings. Edge defender. Johnathan Gredard. All right. Who's in his late 20s? Who wants a new contract? But who is a very good player who had 12 stacks and back-to-back seasons in 23 and 24?
They've tried for Jaylen Phillips. They were in on Tray Hendrickson. That tells me that's where Howie Roseman is looking to spend some resources. Let's say they make a trade in Jonathan Gredard's on your defense next year. I like it. A replacement for Phillips. All right. Ask them what he got for us. The Eagles are going to make this even more spicy, dramatic, and interesting. And they are going to sign a veteran-wide receiver to join this team. Because I can't bank on what's going to happen here. And I can't leave Devonte Smith on an island. You got rid of Jahan Dotson. Where does this leave receiver room? If AJ Brown, which I don't believe they should do, but if they do, it leaves a weakness at receiver. They got to handle it and give some backup plants here. So I think they're going to address the receivers with a veteran presence. That's my favorite prediction we got so far here. They sign AJ's replacement before he's even out there. Yeah, you like that. And it shouldn't be looked at like that, but that's how they're able to do it. Well, that's what I'm going to say as soon as they do it. That's what I'll talk about. Of course. All right. Some insurance. Yes. Thank you to Shio Kapatiya and Ashtolson.
Thank you guys for joining us. Thanks a lot. All right. First of all, coming out to McGurks. We're having a great time. It is a great crowd, great food, great atmosphere. McGurks and Horsesham. Bird Sound Hall continues on the other side. Football. I mean, really, probably the ultimate football guy hour. I mean, it's always football guy. When LA and I are here. But we're going to welcome on Jason and I, Chris. And I specifically need their help to show Hugh Douglas the light on AJ Brown. I need their help. That's up next. Your phone calls well. It is a bird's sound hall at McGurks and Horsesham on sports radio. 94 WIP. I'm done carrying around bulky drinks. And I'm definitely done cleaning melted candy out of my pockets. So yeah.
