2:06One-time world log rolling title. Mike Rogers and hitting switches and conducting things. Also a pepper aficionado. I went to breakfast with him Saturday, Blake, after our emergency show. I was forced to ask the question, would you like some breakfast with your pepper? He said, well, at least say, left the top screwed on. Big pepper guy. Oh, you put a lot of pepper on his stuff. One could not see the yellow of the sunny side egg when he was done with the pepper. Really? He tells me that he consumes, you know, the hot ones, that most popular pocket, when they get to the final honest wing. Mike says he has that pepper every morning. What's the measurement of the hotness of the sauces? Skovils. Skovils. I am learning a new term today.

3:07That's the unit of measurement for how hot something is. The Skovils. Good to have everybody back on this Tuesday after Labor Day. I got to say for the most part, reasonably busy summer. Not just for the Vancouver canox, but for all of us engaged with Vancouver and British Columbia sport. Of course, the World Cup highlight for the sports van. I mean, the city was just incredible in June. I'll say the rest of the sports picked up the slack because I think we expected more hockey news throughout the two months. Well, and it really disappeared after July 15th. Yeah. But we've come to realize that in the national hockey league. August 1 maybe, but this was like two weeks earlier. But thank goodness Whitecaps and Lions news World Cup. And then the MLB to Vancouver story, right, all given to something to chew on.

4:10Whitecaps continue to be a fine side Saturday night with standing. Of course, the save the caps movement continues. BC Lions started poorly then ripped off five consecutive wins and got a succeeded. A couple of MOP candidates there. I'll be at drop 200 Montreal Friday more on that later, more on the caps loss as well. Vancouver Canadians had an awesome second half of the season. Shock a block with some good prospects. And yeah, Major League Baseball in Vancouver and continue to chip away at that. Story getting more and more information and we'll be talking more about that. And look, we did a number of shows about the demise of terrestrial sports talk radio in the city. After Roger's decision in early July. Needless to say, like you, we were listeners. So very disappointed to hear the news. Particularly disappointed for a lot of friends and colleagues. Who we had over there at 650, including some of whom have now been through this. On two occasions after Bell. Shuttered a m 1040 back in February of 2001. Looking forward to seeing where some of those personalities land. And I suspect we'll be seeing more news about that as the month. Rules along, but. I mean, in terms of a city big enough to sustain terrestrial sports talk radio.

6:15Clearly, Metro Vancouver is. Alas, when you have decision makers who are all the way out in Toronto. And particularly when some of those decision makers have made extremely big bets, capital intensive bets. On buying out sports empires as Rogers did. They start pinching pennies elsewhere. And the last that hit our community and our market. Yeah, unfortunately. That story, that theme continues. Anyways, who cares? We've got us. We've got our coverage of our teams for our people as we've long said on this program we're by. And for the community, let's get to our poll question. Who should be the canucks next captain and we're throwing Zeve William into the mix after the 20 year old defenseman signs a long term extension. With the Vancouver canucks, we know you came to love him down the stretch last year.

7:19When he became an important voice in that Vancouver canucks room and particularly post deadline. When it seemed like the vibe had changed and after a couple years of a dysfunctional room, it turned into a lighter, brighter, forward looking place and Zeve William gave voice to all of that. Brendan Gallagher, of course, and Uber veteran. We once knew him as a young kid with the Vancouver Giants. He went out and forged himself a fantastic career with the Montreal Canadians where he was very much the conscience and voice of that room. And particularly as they went through and he goes sunshine and light too. Oh, is he ever I mean you brighten up your day. Of course, resident here in the lower mainland, he's come on home. He wanted to be here just the one year left on Brendan Gallagher's contract. So the question of how long he will be of Vancouver canuck is certainly I think you want to see how much hockey's left in him before you commit to him in that regard.

8:19It's going to be tempting and I don't know if they'll have sleepovers like Maclin and Tyler to Foley, but I could see these two getting along famously Zeve William and Brendan Gallagher. I think they might be a little beyond sleepover. I think that was an 18 year old, 19 year old dead. Oh, the 20 year old just couldn't possibly, but a 19 year old is weird. That's right. Well, we'll see if Coots makes the team. Maybe if Coots makes the team. And then there's well, Philip Bronic, who was being groomed to take over the captain, see, of course, vacated by Quinn Hughes after the trade to Minnesota last December. He was certainly the choice of the previous management group, Jim Rutherford Patrick, Alvin Ed all the conucks had begun trotting him out as a leader on the club. As we also know via his agent, Alan Walsh, who was quite active on social media, Philip Bronic for the moment at the very least wants to be a Vancouver conuck. He is happy here. The family is happy here.

9:19He sees value and purpose in terms of being a leader and a veteran hand for all the young players who are going to come through conucks. And he sheds light like a partly cloudy day. He did seem to play ball a little better at the end of last season. He had been mostly a silent soldier for the conucks. And even before that, early in his career with the Detroit Redwings, but he's getting older. His station in the National Hockey League is rising. He was one of the few conucks. I think you can argue how to good season last year. And what was a forgettable campaign? Or you can vote none slash other. I know Luke Shen is getting some right in love. Everybody loves the personality of now a three time Vancouver conuck who will be here all season because he's got a new move clause attached to his one year. But probably doesn't play all season. Look, I in a perfect world. Luke Shen plays 40 games for the team this year. So I can't be a cap. Also none because and this was a very popular refrain from conucks fans at the end of last season as we were going through the Philip Ronic ascension.

10:29And that is don't name a captain. No one is quite yet worthy. We'll see if Ronic wants to stick it out long term. Of course, he's under contract long term. But as we know, NHL players who have his sort of pedigree and his sort of service do from time to time ask their managers to send them to more competitive environments. And many were saying no wait till the next leader reveals themselves from the young core. Whether that's Eve William, whether we hear a lot of braincoats at the end of last year, who of course has that sort of DNA in the western hockey league. Hey, maybe Caleb Maltre at one day to team with his father, who of course is now the Vancouver conucks head coach. Where and Caleb's tracking like Zeeb William, you know, good character kid, easy talker. So you know, that's the thing. He's a candidate, bring coots as a candidate too. I think down down the road as well. You could see him being that kind of a player as well, which is why I'm going to ask for more time. And I'm going to say none. And I'll also say this like a Brennan Gallagher has got 20 points at Christmas.

11:41And it looks very much like he's got any cell seasons left in him and you want to sign him to an extension, then he could sign up to an extension and name him captain January first. And and have a midseason captain say, hey, this is going to be our captain for the X two and a half years. And he buys this, you know, a lot of time to do, but you have to see that he can play the sports still. So by time, I'm saying none. I'm with you. And I'm also with you in terms of I do think this should be an evaluation as the season goes along to see if somebody reveals themselves. What I will say is that surely somebody has to reveal themselves by this time next year. I mean, like I saw a little bit at the end of last year. No, no, go you can go years without a captain. To me, that becomes an indictment on the room, like surely at some point, somebody of your 23 players is going to unveil themselves as a leader, as a team conscience, as a team spokesperson, as a bridge of divides, making sure the locker room dressing room.

12:55And then the room is in fact, and in fraction, as we've seen in the past, I would be quite disappointed if we're sitting here next year with conox about to take ice in a official capacity. And nobody is there to speak on behalf of the player group. If ZB William has a 42 point year. And does not feel burdened by the contract extension that he just signed. I think that's a really good step for, but again, even then, no matter again, maybe Caleb Maholchers, the guy destined to be the captain. Well, I mean, he's to chip off the old block and he certainly sounds like one. And of course, the one thing he's got going for him that his father, as it turned out, didn't have going for him as that he projects as a frontline NHL player and point producer. Mani was drafted with that in mind, but never quite hit those heights, turned himself into one of the best third line centers in the national hockey league, one of the best face off and penalty killers. And of course, a universally, you know, not just be loved teammate, but respected pedestal, like everything.

14:03When you talk about Mani in terms of the way his peers, but of course, thought of him, of course, too, an A means something as well. None of these things mean a ton, but an A does mean something as well. Daniel Sedin, for as good as he is as a leader, was never a captain of this team. So if Caleb Maholchered is relegated, if you will, to a an A instead of a C for the first half of his, but not the end of the world. But here's what I would say, like, I think your years away from Mel Holtra wearing a letter. I mean, he's going to play this year a boss in four or five. I would be very, you know, you're one, you're certainly not going to put a letter on him. So, no, I think you're talking about yours down the road in terms of that calculation. So, who should be the connox next captain? You can vote at the S and P X and YouTube channels. Leave William extension, which you may not have quite digested, given it broke mid afternoon, heading into the Labor Day long weekend. There was a full debrief on our emergency Saturday podcast, but eight years, 9.38 million per season total value north of 75 million.

15:22And this is the new connox regime, the management of co precedence Henry, Condan, you'll see Dean and general manager Ryan Johnson making its first big bet. Was it a bet worth making? Was it a bet they had to make given that William was the centerpiece of the Queen Hughes return. And how can zeve we him live up to this deal and the astonishing financial figures, which needless to say, I think caught a lot of people across the National League National Hockey League by surprise. Let's dig in, Blake. Important to note. 9.38 million is not akin to your older brothers 9.38 million. This was a summer that's on explosion of National Hockey League. The big salaries both on the free agent market with bottom six forwards who got term and who got money. And of course, when we're talking about frontline young players, notably Lil Carlson, the offer sheet he signed with the Philadelphia Flyers that the Anaheim ducks matched and paying him 19 million per year.

16:31And of course, we got a 20 million dollar player when kill McCar broke that barrier on his extension with the Colorado avalanche. So all of this to say the cap went up eight and a half percent. It's projected to go up 9% over the coming seasons. So you're looking at an upper limit in the one thirty one thirty five range Blake projected by twenty thirty. And this comes on a weekend where the Houston and Atlantic expansion seems almost a done deal. And that's going to inject money into the system. And that's not shared with players. Yes, that will lubricate contract because we've talked how many teams are going to spend to the cap. Probably going to be fewer these days. But if you get two checks for expansion teams, you'll maybe reinvest that money a little bit more and start to spend while it is going to reveal which owners are serious and right to spend to the cap and which owners aren't NHL salary cap for this season upper limit at a hundred and four million.

17:42So you know, think of it 20 25 million going to be added to this thing over the next three or so years. I think you're getting to an environment where there will be some teams that tap out well short of that because simply they have to they're not going to have the year over your By the time we get there like you're you're four of this contract, which is five years from now. Like I really think a nine million dollar players can be considered a player in the middle of your roster or you know the forty percent or the you know sixty percent of your roster like it's. Every wants them to be very good, but I don't know that the bar is going to be that high to clear to justify being a nine million and this seems crazy to say, but I don't think the bars that high on the relative scale to clear being a nine million dollar player. So let's spend a minute on that then because look at his height of heights Z William has number one defenseman potential.

18:47His best shifts are that call whether he can be nor Astrofe candidate defenseman is a big ask and an open ended question going forward. If he doesn't hit his height of heights with the offensive ability and you got to love the puck skills and you also got to love the attitude as well. If he's the top pair defenseman. Okay, maybe he's not a quintessential number one because he doesn't quite defend well enough we've gone through the comparisons before. Can you get to a Josh more sea level okay, maybe not can you get to a Morgan Riley level West Vancouver's Morgan Riley who of course. Turned himself into a top pair defenseman with the Toronto May beliefs had several excellent scoring seasons. At a side of height was probably a number one, but maybe didn't spend the most time as a pure number one, but was clearly a top pair defenseman for a number of years. Then I think he's absolutely going to be worth this because I think you're going to get to a world where you do have a couple of 10 million dollar defenseman on your top pair.

19:55I heard a lot this week and read a lot this week and about even if he turns into a second pair defenseman. This is going to be worth it. And you know, forgive me if the devil's in the details here, but I think if he's only your number four defenseman, I think it's going to be an overpay. You get to at least being a number three, okay, maybe he doesn't defend well enough to log the heaviest of minutes, but he's clearly an asset with the puck on his stick he is clearly an asset in terms of driving play your transition game and helping others produce points. In a world where you got a couple of defenseman making 10 million plus if he slots in at number three at just below nine and a half million, then that is something I can live with if he's a number four Blake, I'm not sure that this is going to be. The Ballyhoo contract that something. Well, it's going to be really difficult to discern what a three four is with his skill set because time on ice, if you're three four with his skill set, you means you're the second power play you into point guy probably.

21:09That's significantly going to reduce your your counting stats at the very least. I can see a world where he's the top power play guy and that one of your two top pair guys is the second power played defense. Yeah, yeah, that's a pretty unique scenario. We got a philipronic style player. You have a granite block fantastic shutdown defenseman who gives you something on the offensive side and then you have your purist point producer, see if we him on the second block. Well, that granite block guy though, then would be a very uncustomary top pairing me at some sound like you like you. Well, we think that now Blake, look where the salaries are going, right? And we're getting better at trends in the game too. So you just don't know how it's going to unfold, but I hear what the premises of your argument that you just want to. I would it's a narrow channel to be sure. But I would just say it doesn't it's not necessarily measurable. You want him in your gut to be your third best defenseman. However, that plays one of your best defenseman, but yes, but I'm saying the bar to clear.

22:14Like if he's your third best defenseman in three, four years time making nine million, I don't think you're that squeamish about this this contract. Again, there's strategy involved or there's asset retention that you're paying for here as well. So it's all wrapped up. It's not only return of service, it's security. The connect bot security with this deal. So that's also part of the fee. And I, you know, the more I think about it, I'm going to, you know, I think my Christmas we're going to have a way better feel on where this gamble is going. If he's at worst what he was last year and if not a little bit better, I think you're going to feel okay about it. Well, he's got to be a lot better than last year. Maybe not this year because of course this is the final year of his entry level contract. This big contract doesn't kick in until the 27-28 season. And we got more details on the way this contract is structured over the course of the weekend.

23:17It is front loaded with salaries at 12. 11 and this includes signing bonus. There are significant signing bonuses in year one and two. It's a six million dollar signing bonus, six million dollar base salary, 12 million dollar total salary in year one, the five million dollar bonus in year two for an 11 million dollar ticket. Then it's just over 10 million in just base salary for year three. And so that means that the remainder of the contract, the final five years of the contract, he has paid $8.4 million per season uniformly with no signing bonuses attached to that. That's what gets you to 9.38 million and total value of 75.04 million. It also includes a modified no trade clause in the final three years of the deal. So that's 32-33 and then the two seasons thereafter.

24:20And I saw some discussion about this that, okay, if it all goes to pot, if he doesn't pop, if he doesn't become the droid, you think you're having your midst. Is he a candidate for a U26 buyout, which of course is a lot more friendly than buying out an older player or a trade candidate knowing that that modified no trade clause only begins in 2032 or two years after the salary goes down to $8.4 million, which makes it a little bit more pliable as a contract going forward. Yeah, and the, the, it's a little bit of security built into the deal from a conundrum. You can buy him out in July of 2031 and you save $8. So, yeah, we're talking about the same thing. We're talking about $1 million capits for eight years, like one million, like it's nothing.

25:22Here's the other thing I saw over the course of the weekend and look, I don't blame Kinox fans for wishful thinking. But we should also note there is absolutely no comparison right now to make between Zeb William and Lane Hudson when it comes to the extension that the Montreal Canadians defenseman signed a year ago, which already looks like it is going to be an incredibly good deal. Oh my gosh. For the Habs at $8.5 million, Lane Hudson did not have the first round in amateur pedigree that Zeb William did as a first round pick. But Lane Hudson also went out and put up 66 points in his rookie season, which got him the massive deal. These are the risks of the player side of things. Like if Lane Hudson signs a three-year extension.

26:26Zeb William was 40 points shy of that. That in and of itself would be a good strike. What's Lane Hudson's extension? If he signs a new contract, if he's up for renewal in three more years, what's he signing for? He's signing for 16 million years? Maybe even 20. Yeah. He even approached the Kale McCart. It was 66 points in a full 82 as a rookie. And then Hudson went out and beat it by 12 points by also playing 82 and doubling his goals from six to 12 and adding six more assists for 78 points. Larsen. It was a larson in year two. So yeah, I mean the brain trust of the Canadians has to be feeling extraordinarily pleased that they got that deal done. And look, the underlying philosophy of that is what the Vancouver can us are applying here. Now whether it works out to the Lane Hudson degree is going to depend on Zeb William and how good a player he can turn into. But needless to say, this is a much bigger bet than what the Habs made on Lane Hudson coming off a 66 point year.

27:34And the comparison right now is not even apples to oranges. It's apples to eggs. So long, long way to go. Let's survey what some folks around the league are saying about this, starting with our buddy, Cameron, Robinson of Elite Prospects, who's going to join the show tomorrow. Cam tweeting. I said, Cameron, yeah, I'm not going to sit here and tell you Zeb William is worth nine million plus today's not. But are we really quibbling over a couple of million in advanced situation? Cap won't be an issue for a long while during the rebuild. And they're betting big on the main piece of the Hughes return. He pretty much has to hit or they're screwed anyways. And I saw that line a lot too, Blake. If he doesn't hit their screwed anyways because of how much he represents in terms of the Quinn Hughes return. So effectively, were they pretty much forced to make a bet on Zeb William? If not now, then at some point before he got to restricted free.

28:34It's an unspoken ingredient in the deal. I think to some degree, because you can't be left with nothing. If that guy walks at a pretty early stage in his career after after a bridge deal or at, you know, free agency at the age of 27. But let's also see what the Minnesota wild getting a Quinn Hughes trade and we'll get to that a second. But, you know, more of that. A federal complaint now. No guarantee is no. No, but, you know, he's looking more and more of the case. And I think if that ends up happening, regardless of what the wild less the wild hit an absolute home run with it, which I doubt they can now. But I think the Vancouver Connacks end up getting further exonerated for whatever they end up being adjudicated on for the for their return because they had their backs up against the wall as well. And at least they made a deal. You know. Look, we discussed this on the Saturday emergency pod.

29:36The connox did have time here. They chose not to use it. They could have gone through this year on the ELC. He gets the next summer. He still doesn't have our brights as a restricted free agent. So it's not like he's going to have them over a barrel. He still gets seven years at that point. He still gets seven years. Okay, so maybe you're sacrificing one year of service down the road. But to me, that isn't. I mean, there's not a ton lost there. Maybe salaries continue to skyrocket and he becomes that much more expensive. But I do think that would take quite a step up season from him. Yeah, and look, he's fully capable. And of course, on the flip side, you get more evidence, right? As to what you're looking at where he does slot in. Yeah, does he look like a future number one? Or could project that on a rookie defenseman 80 some games into his career. Does he look like a number two? Does he take over power play quarterback?

30:36Judy's from Philip Rohnick. And what's the manner of that takeover? Was it given to him by coaching staff that wants to see young players develop or did he just go out and take it because he was undeniable? And the best power play quarterback, the best offensive defenseman they have. There's dom decision of the athletic. And I think this mirrors what a lot of folks around the NHL are saying, part because they don't know Zeeb William as well. He's just played one full NHL season. And most of course, here in the Pacific time zone with a lot of observers, back east being asleep. Dom tweets, consort of C the vision for this in the back half, but it's a really, really big bet on upside that he's nowhere close to showing yet. And that last sentence, nowhere close to showing yet, it does apply. It's a harsh truth right now. And that's going to heap some pressure on the young man. And he talked about it Friday in his press conference in terms of he understands what responsibility comes with this contract.

31:40As you were saying all weekend, though, the good news is you got a year before week, you know, as Patterson signed his deal and 11.6 became a sort of letter. And 40 times away. Yeah. 9.38 is still a year away. So Zeeb William has some runway has some time. And again, he's traded for Quin Hughes, but he doesn't now with this contract. He doesn't have to be Quin Hughes. He is getting paid half of what Quin Hughes is going to be making over the same kind of duration of time. Half. So, you know, again, the expectation of this player can be released a little bit. And I'm looking at Quin Hughes and trust me, this is not denigrating Quin Hughes in the least Quin Hughes is a wizard. And he'll get paid commensurate with that. But in the North Division season, Quin Hughes had 41 points in just 56 games.

32:41But it is he wasn't close to a point per game. And that's in his second full season in the national hockey league. So even wizards don't necessarily burst out of the gates torching the league. No, no, and he doesn't have to be Quin Hughes. That's the good news. And Hudson's are like Santa Claus in the East. Yeah, I hear about him, but you don't see him very often. I hear Alex Blair, former Nash, Hockeyneck and Canada producer. This is not a cautious single swing by management. This is them. Oh, sorry. Let me get to the first one here. Set it up. This feels like a traditionally un-canuc move. But I like the proactive gamble in a fast rising cap environment, depending on contract structure, could be an under 25 buyout. If it's a clear bus, and he goes on to say, this is not a cautious single swing by management. This is them taking a home run swing early in the rebuild too often this or it has not been too cautious has been too cautious. I should say and not showing a winner's mentality. Time will tell, but they clearly committed to their belief in the player.

33:45And that all support. And I think one of the reasons why Quin Hughes fans so love this deal is not just that they too believe in Zeeb William. But also, and we discussed this a little bit on Saturday's show, the last two management groups of the Vancouver Connects were a little out of step with the NHL's most forward thinking. They were both more courage of their convictions management groups that were operating on textbooks that were a little dated. Both the Jim Benning regime and committing what they did in terms of term to bottom six forwards and things like that. And the Jim Rutherford regime and of course Jim Rutherford was showing signs of this towards the end of his Pittsburgh penguin stays and the Huck canucks hired him nevertheless. Needless to say he had to stick handle some personality issues with the canucks and JT Miller and Lee is betterson and then Quin Hughes.

34:45That were somewhat irregular you certainly hope very regular by an NHL clubs standards, but you know neither of those management groups I think it's fair to say. Like showed themselves as being willing to adapt and be on the most cutting edge of NHL management whereas this is very much a move that is on that edge whether it turns out. Yeah and I like the fact that this is not the safe the not the safe move but it's also not crazy ridiculous either like it's a good middle ground it's a good stepping stone into the new school environment if you will I I don't know that this is a crazy contract. Pretty big step or pretty big stone I'm not sure which is which but by the way I think it was just tie this up it is a you 26 clause anything under 26 at the age of 26 that's where you your buyout goes to 2 thirds so it is 25 and under for the discounted byout.

35:47Let's hope they don't have to avail exactly to it yeah and lastly and I know this was noticed by conucks fans because conucks fans don't miss much it is truly one of the smartest and technologically inclined fan bases out there that's been the case for a long long time especially with the advent rise of social media. Yes it is true that Zeeb William has a hockey playing brother Blake. His name is shea he's a Detroit Red Wings prospect. I say prospect because he's not quite established himself as an NHL player just I think he wants to play with Zeeb more than Zeeb wants to play with him. Shea William was a high draft pick himself but second round not first 36th overall in the 2021 NHL entry draft like younger brothers Eve he went to the University of Denver spent three years there and has just completed his second full season in the American hockey league with the Grand Rapids.

36:58He has a Griffin's he is a well he's a big boy 6 3 2 16 pounds is a left shot defense and with some offensive game as well. He's not in the back and tire reporting on sports net that Zeeb isn't quite as concerned about playing with his brother as other offensively inclined Vancouver conucks defenseman seem to be. Yeah and I think in the case of Quinn he had to go where the majority of the players are early he wants to go where the majority of the brothers are. I think customarily you have to go to the better of the brothers. You have to chase the elite player. So she again would be more inclined to want to come here. Well, since you've referenced it and we've talked about it here. Let's bring this up because there is news on that file. He's according to Chris Johnson of the athletic and TSN Chris reporting that I think he was having trouble meaning Quinn basically making up his mind about what he wants to do for his future.

38:07I may have seen him with his brothers attending the US Open tennis tournament in New York City. Which if you're a wild fan, I'm sure is a little bit of a shiver down the spine when the rest of the teammates are there skating in Minnesota. Johnson goes on. There's a desire that we've known for years to one day play with his brothers. I mean Jim Rutherford looking more and more. Like a fortune teller future teller with that line. He tried. The devil has mid to long term deals on those players. Quinn I think is knowing now. Yeah, I really had really fun. It's a really good team in Minnesota. But it's sort of now or never. Unless he can convince him to do a two year deal. But then they'll know that clock is just ticking there too. Quinn knows. I want if I want to play with my brothers. Now is probably the best time for me to do it. Well, and of course the clock is ticking on eight year extensions one week from today.

39:07The NHL world changes in terms of contract structure. You were no longer able to sign eight year max term deals that will go down to seven years max term for indigenous first free agents. And if you're signing free agents on the open market, the max term is going down to six years starting on July first. So September 15th is the deadline here. And that led us to a poll question we fired over the weekend because this is another name that we've seen in Kinox circles in terms of do you make another big bet on Winger Liam O'Grinn? Of course, O'Grinn. One of the other pieces that came to the Kinox via the Queen Hughes trade in the Minnesota wild. We saw some really good looking flashes from O'Grinn. At the end of last year there isn't much lacking there from a speed and size point of view. He is a big big rambunctious fellow with an awful lot of athletic tools and some goal scoring ability.

40:13And so we asked on the weekend should the Kinox go eight years on a Liam O'Grinn extension. Most of you aren't there yet 56% are voting no right now. Mr. Price, we kick this around on the Saturday Emerge pod as well. Is there a number that interests you in terms of an eight year Liam O'Grinn extension? I am not a Liam O'Grinn truth or I like the player. I'm intrigued by what he can bring to the table, but I am not convinced by I'm not convinced he can be a regular 17 goal score in the league. Never mind am I worried about what if he goes off and start scoring 28. I need to see a lot more before I'm committing play long term. If he's scoring 28, I think you fear the Kinox you're just happy to sign that contract it whatever number is at the at that point in time. I'm with you. I'm on this one as well. You've got some time I want to use some of that time. It's not like he has some arbitration rights or any kind of negotiation hammer on you next summer as well.

41:19O'Grinn goes into the final year of his ELC will be an RFA come next summer, but I'll say this Mike said to us and we were getting the show together boy. It is a really good time to be a reasonable young player in the national hockey league with this September 15th eight year deadline looming because Yale Towns Fraser Minton of course once a Toronto Maple Leaf dealt to the Boston Bruins. He gets a seven year doesn't get the full max eight years, but he gets seven years at seven point two million dollars per season from the Boston Bruins and much like Zee Williams deal. It only kicks in a year from now you'll play one more season as a cost controlled player before hitting Pedro and that contract is so big seven point two that even goes a long way in Yale Town. That's enough money to survive in Yale Town just you need some money if you're going to survive in Yale Town just enough money.

42:25Every time I go to Yale Town I let Carmsomal pay. Oh really wow he's got that kind of money right the good news is you don't need a lot of money to get yourself yellow dog beer yellow dog Bruins chased my tail pale. 43:26On the waiver wire but there was a really interesting piece on the athletic today from Corey Prawnman with regards to waiver wire targets and we bring this up everybody because by virtue of finishing last in the national hockey league the vancoot last season the vancover can ox are going to have their pick of the litter. When rosters get set later this month and players get put on waivers they've got priority they've got first choice and there are some pretty intriguing candidates mostly runs in this litter by the way for going to stay with the pet adoption. Theme but there are a couple of decent ones that may filter through may. Well when you say runs you mean that from a size point of view because some of them are big boys I meant that in skill wise.

44:27Let's go through a few of the names that Prawnman brings up. Matthew Plutrus remember him. He broke on to the scene three years ago with the Boston Bruins put up 15 points and 30 some games he looked like he was going to be a big second round steal from the 22 down the middle to entry draft a right shot center down the middle. He's put up he's put up 27 points in 69 NHL games spread over three years been of a falling out last year with the Bruins organization he has scored at the HL level 93 in 131. HL games but a young right shot center who at one point in his career looked like he was going to be a most serviceable maybe even beyond that center iceman at the national hockey league level that's an interesting bet to make for a kid who doesn't turn 23 until

45:27the end of the season it's a cost is zero for the cost is zero on all these players it's just you've got a bump a player off your roster yeah and it's not like the Vancouver canucks don't have candidates like you know if you're a healthy scratch for the Vancouver can you have a chance to fix this here I mean on paper it's one of the worst rosters than the NHL so who's looking their chops it connects castoffs right now right. How about a right shot defenseman with top six overall pedigree David Yearichek and this career has been fascinated six four 204 pounds a right shot defenseman who has already been traded twice in his NHL career drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets the Minnesota wild and Bill gear and gave up quite a number of draft picks to bring him to the state of hockey this was prior to the Queen Hughes acquisition and then moved him on to fill it

46:27Elf at the end of last year were presumably he'll play for Rick talk it talk it have an offensive inclined guy at that size and the defender Vancouver 85 NHL games over parts of four seasons with three clubs I mean I'm going to guess you don't see that a whole lot for six overall picks and he said 88 points in 153 HL games so he has been quite a bit better than a half point per game as an HL defenseman and I'll put up this warning here too is he's 23 November should mention so some of the other guys on this list are a fair bit younger or at least six months younger this exercise is also a little bit like our controversial blind rankings that we've put on our oh black love that oh my gosh people thinking that we're just ranking what the players are anyway much like blind rankings if one day one of those players is available thing is you don't know who's next available and if you make your claim you go to the back of the bus and you don't get first

47:36yeah but but I think it is fair to say that the the pool of waiver claims will never be more top heavy or deeper than at the end of the preseason they're going to let all these guys if you've spent the assets to get David Euro check you're going to want to see every second you can a few others Ivan Miroschi Nitschenko a Russian Winger taken 20th overall by the capitals in 2022 52 NHL games over three seasons hasn't scored there has scored at the HL level though 121 points and 175 games not not a small undersized guy either a right shooting six foot 185 pound Winger is right they were trying to capitalize on the Russian factor there in fact there was a lot of scouting services early in his draft year who had a much higher ranked than 20th overall next player the ceilings a little bit limited but anaheim

48:38right shot center Nathan Goshe 20 second overall that 22 draft 6 3 207 just got into three NHL games at the end of last season profiles as a bottom six right shot center with size maybe a bridge to Brooks Regalski the connect second round picked this year who's got a similar profile although way bigger Regalski's bigger than just about everyone so he's interesting and then read Schaeffer huge Winger with the national predators 6 5 226 was the 30 second final pick of the first round in 2022 by the oilers who have traded him off 8 points and 47 NHL games but he earned his way to the NHL last year Blake because of the production you see there at the American hockey league level with what has been traditionally a very good program Milwaukee now and he's a week away from being 23 so he's a little bit older 15 goals there in 33

49:42NHL games last season so you know that got him a ticket or no we'll see where he lasts more than half the season so there you have it and there might be some more names added to that list as we get closer to the national hockey league opening the season of course the Vancouver connects get going on September 28th against the Edmonton oil sorry to add September 29th Tuesday against the Edmonton if all those guys appear on the waiver wire in one day who you taking boy it's I would want to talk to scouting friends of mine but just off the top right shot center and right shot the air both very number so I think you're a check I think you're a check it would be the one yeah it's the highest pedigree there yeah if you can fix them that could be quite an important piece and they have the right shot offensively inclined defenseman is the

52:53rink that at home kind of thing came to be and it was like you said it was on me to be the adult and and realize like the child is going to act like a child I have to be the adult and and be more mature about this but once we had that understanding it was a much better relationship both away from the ice which is obviously the most important one but also at the rink where there was a very clear understanding that I'm not treating you any different than any other player you are not to treat me any different than you would any other coach and it goes along with being respectful to your coaches listening to what they say paying attention being mindful all those things so once we and made that decision and once we clearly define the roles of coach and dad it was there was definitely a change in our our relationship and our approach to how we would manage that. My dad coached me one year in football and it was probably not our best year of getting along. Yeah I've coached my daughters never coach oh no I did coached my son too and I talk to you. How's that worked? Do they listen to you? I stayed out of their way. Do they listen between the

54:56eyes? Stayed out of their way? The rep kids. The ones that were playing house I was a little more interactive but the rep kids are just letting me. Lastly want to get to this we had mentioned this a couple of times over the course of the summer and look you're the Vancouver canox right now you're looking for you're looking for situations you can exploit the waiver wire for example. There's going to be some good talent available on the waiver wire you're going to have first pick of all the players who are on waivers at the end of this month as rosters are getting sent set so take advantage. The other thing I think you're looking at taking advantage of and particularly giving this rise in cap environment because we don't anticipate there will be a ton of teams that have quote unquote cap dilemmas cap how like all the terms you've heard in terms of teams being really close to the spending limit and not having a lot of great options in terms of how do they get out of that how do they create some cap space to sign a player or to add deadline acquisitions those

56:00situations are going to be fewer and further between now there may well be budget situations that maybe we don't identify quite as readily because we don't know what internal budgets are we do know what spending limits are via the cap but it is quite clear that the anaheim ducks have a traditional catnatter on their hand because of the signing of Leo Carlson to that contract via the Philadelphia offer sheet that was way over and above what they anticipated spending now if you go onto the websites it will show anaheim showing about $12.8 million in cap space and that's well and good the problem is cutter goat chase a restricted free agent he does not have a contract right now he will not be reporting the training camp without one he's a restricted free agent who's got 10.2 C rights Blake that obnoxious clause in the CBA and while he's already turned down some

57:01anaheim offers so the wisdom now as Elliott Friedman pointed out I think one of the things we'll be watching over the next couple of weeks is what anaheim tries to do to create some cap room they're going to have to do some roster surgery and that has that question has come down to Chris writer who's got some trade protection to Alex galorn who has some trade protection to Frank Retrano who has some trade protection three veteran wingers all of them over 30 for the ducks all of them on pretty good tickets cry during galorn expire after this season vitrano has a couple of years left but these are players that I think you have to look at as the Vancouver can us because the cost of acquisition is going to be either relatively cheap or they may pay you something to take one of the contracts off the hands and of course these are all reasonably serviceable initial players still it's not like anaheim

58:01credit or to get one of these guys out of the way they just have to to get cutter goat chase locked up long term and so that leads to the delicious possibility that not only could you possibly get paid on the front end to take one of these contracts on you could get paid on the back end at the trade deadline or next summer in vitrano's case to move them on to a bigger contender and we should say the tend to see well Matt also just hates it being quoted means that he can't be offered she does which is why they haven't had to defend against that here as well based on what already happened with them with regards to Leo Carlson that would be an easy aggressive move to make by another team but they can't do that so that's why it's a stalemate it's an old school contract stalemate here in a lot of ways even for a guy in an ELC that can't shop himself elsewhere I mean I think every team is probably trying to I mean the vultures are probably circling around the ducks right now I don't know and there would be panic plenty of teams

59:04with cap space because of the jump in I don't know what they're what what narrow path they think they can walk to get out from underneath this problem I mean it might just be fielding the best trade offers and that's it yeah can I except the third most cap space in the league after Seattle and Detroit who are both north of 20 million in what's showing cap space and both of those teams actually would like to win so they would be way more inclined to pay you more for it because it means a lot more to them yeah well Detroit has some own evidence in this RFA so they do have a big ticket that's sitting there that has to get resolved in Seattle's case there is none maybe and aheim doesn't fancy trading one of those guys to a division rival and have them come back and play against them a number of times this year so I would think Verbeek has some options here and doesn't have to straight pay a team to take a contract off his hands but who knows we'll see where this goes you hope again getting back to the Knox Management team okay you've shown via

1:09:39accomplished an awful lot but we know the pedigree and you also heard ryan johnson speak repeatedly and i do think that if you're going to make this kind of bet zeeb we have some kind of guy to do it i mean a highest character 20 year old you can find this guy's a winner at other levels we know the draft pedigree uh and so yeah i mean you hope that he becomes the player that uh he's projected to be and at that point down the road towards the back end of the contract there's a chance that there's some value but in the short term uh it's an overpay again this is uh just the new normal uh that we all have to accept here so uh you know i i like the lot of what i saw from zeeb goon on the ice uh you can see the potential there but we're all still trying to draw conclusions and nobody's got a crystal wall so is he going to be a 45 point defenseman is he going to be a 60 point guy can he push it to become a 75 point you know one of the top 10 scorers among defenseman in the

1:10:40national hockey league uh it's a blank canvas and it's all there in front of him but uh yeah it's going to be fascinating to see and certainly you know i do think we all have to sort of slow the roll of expectations in the first couple of years of the contract when it kicks in just because he's not going to be a nine plus million dollar player in the first couple of years of uh of that deal what's the biggest comparison you can make to him out there because there's a you know there are we address the folly of the lane Hudson comparison in the opening segment yes like the Hudson's uh you know uh shaffer hues macar that's not how he even moves on the ice never mind the production level that's just not how he moves on the ice so is there anybody that you can say hey if all the planets align he's this player who does he remind you of yeah and i've seen the Morgan Riley name thrown out there and look i think Morgan's had a couple of 70 plus point seasons in the national hockey league now uh it's a team game and ultimately the team

1:11:45success has him in there in Toronto uh you know you could say the same about a guy like Josh Morracy and i think if Steve Booian became either one of those players uh the conox would be delighted and I think that his career trajectory uh would have taken shape so yeah and this contract is worth it that player as well for sure uh when you think of uh where the cap is going and what other you know nine and ten million dollar play if he becomes a sort of 60 to 70 point advancement uh and his top pair of minutes and log in the 10 of ice time and his teammates are developing around him I mean that's the other part that you know it will watch him in a vacuum here but it is a team game and he's a huge part of the conox rebuild like if it doesn't pan out for zibbouyum then the rebuild probably hasn't gone the way that the Vancouver conox won that's a lot of pressure on a kid I know we talked about pressure and pressure being a privilege and again set all the right things and I could sit and talk to him or listen to him uh for hours on end he's just a really engaging

1:12:48charismatic guy and I love the fact that he's had like I want to be here for eight years he wanted to get this thing done before next week's deadline so he's committed to the conox conox of obviously committed to him and uh now it starts and and I caught a little bit of your program on the weekend and Blake I thought you made a good point that you know this is the final year of his entry level deal this is still a training wheel season if you will that uh if the growth isn't where you want it to see by this time next year I don't think that's reason for alarm uh but this is a big year and now I think it really becomes interesting to you know how do they handle him a new head coach who understands the assignment that it's not about wins and losses it is about player development so how do they use a lot of utilize them where do they deploy them that battle for the top unit the power play spot the way the power play finished last year I got to think that Phil Peronix certainly wants to stake his claim to be on power play one but uh Friday afternoon the Vancouver conox signal that you know they have fully committed to Zeeb William and so how quickly do they hand

1:14:55in the first segment I'm going to draw a distinction between a number three and a number four like if he's one of your top three use defenseman okay there's a world where I can see all three top defenseman on NHL teams outside of entry level deals being $10 million players at some point boy if he's number four that falls a little bit short for me but you tell me Jeff does he have to be a number one a top pair would a number three defenseman earn this contract where do you see that going in terms of where he's going to slot in with the rest of the conucks defense to earn 9.38 per year yeah I shut it a little bit when I heard people suggesting that he doesn't have to be a top pair guy at that kind of money and again to your point Matt that we don't know ultimately where the cap's going to go in two years and four years all of that said you know this comes back to the idea of the rebuild as a whole and I think he was a centerpiece of the Quinn Hughes deal and that's not to slight the other guys that were brought in or the draft pick but I went the best

1:15:59defenseman in franchise history they needed to get a young defenseman who has the potential to grow into not necessarily a replacement of Quinn Hughes and I don't want this to be on a comparison to Quinn Hughes but they need another guy that is going to be able to hold down big minutes play in all situations and that remains to be seen like we know that he projects as a power play guy right now you know he's insulated by Philoporonic and I think they're going to start the season together and then I like the mix of that pairing but you know it's some point if they move Philoporonic or his Philoporonic ages you know Z Williams gonna have to emerge here I would think on his own and so I don't want to lower the bar I think we've come through a decade of just lowering the bar in this market I want to believe that everything that we look at with Z Williams right now is a guy that's on a path to be a top pairing defender for the Vancouver Conoxin for a lot of years but he's not the biggest guy in the world so that brings into account the idea of you know

1:17:00Kenny handle the shutdown role will he be a penalty killer or will they reserve those minutes for somebody else so that that keeps them a little fresher to be five on five and power play like there's a lot that's going to go into this but just in terms of you know ultimately where does it top out yeah I would agree with you that he has to be one of your three best defensemen through the duration of his contract and this rebuild otherwise I think some things have kind of gone sideways on you as an organization so let's hope for the best and try to look at it as a guy that's going to be able to build his game into a solid top pairing top two guy at the national hockey the level for a lot of seasons to come there was a different management under the Quinhus situation but is there any Quinhus trauma that played into this as well just knowing the okay one of our top defensemen is just secure for almost a decade now here in the connection for yeah I don't know if it's the Quinhus trauma but I do think that you look around the national hockey league and I

1:18:02would think that the Anaheim ducks certainly have regret they had opportunities to lock up their guys coming off entry level contracts and look where they are now now as he Williams attend to see so he wouldn't have been eligible for an offer sheet next summer so that was something the canucks didn't have to worry about but they've got enough other guys whether it's Liam O'Grinn whether it's DPD whether it's John and Lecker Mackie and I think it was just another reality check for everybody around the national hockey get your business done get it done early and just don't open yourself up to other teams dictating the way that your salary cap is going to have to be handled so you know I wouldn't think so much about the Quinhus but I just think this is an opportunity I mean I suppose you can look back at the way Quinhus was handled and the fact that when both he and EP 40 were up for contracts you know they had kind of sewer themselves and didn't have the caps based necessity go along with both of those guys and you know how that generally works out in the national hockey league if your stars do develop into the stars that you want them to become

1:19:05so I just think it's one thing the canucks can clear off the plate I think they can point to this as you know here's a key piece of the rebuild that wants to be here is likely going to be here now for the duration of that deal I mean things can change I suppose over time but he's again they've made a commitment to each other and I just think that gives the canucks a little bit of club now to work with some of their other young players that hey Zeeve wants to be here we know that he's put his name on the dotted line and now it's about getting the rest of your ducks in a row here and not opening yourself up to other teams coming in and poaching well we also know he has clout in the room that became evident last year japh he's a very personable outgoing engaging young man he said all the right things which really endeared himself to Vancouver canucks fans down the stretch of a most difficult season and of course now he joins theliest Patterson Brock Bessler in Philip Ronyk as being under contract long term and of course unlike those three

1:20:08he is not saddled with everything from the past we're asking on our poll question who should be the canucks next captain William Gallagher Ronyk none other who you like here well I suppose this is two separate questions because one is who should be the captain this season I'm sort of in that camp that I'd be fine if they didn't have a captain this year and they really truly started this rebuild organically and allowed players to grow into it now they went the second half of last season without a captain it would be a long time to go without a guy with a C but your poll question is who should be the next one and so that doesn't necessarily suggest it has to be for this coming season all of that said the captain discussion doesn't interest me all that much I mean at some point somebody will wear the C again for the Vancouver canucks I think and I'm not trying to evade the question but the formation of the leadership group this season is really what fascinates me

1:21:09because I can make a strong case that Z Williams should be a part of that at the age of 20 in his first full season with the Vancouver canucks and some might say oh too much pressure any young guy just go let him play but hear me out here I think over time that the idea of letters on players has the importance is the minute somewhat I think guys in the room know who the leaders are I think good teams the really good teams have a bunch of leaders now we know that the locker room here has been toxic and they hope that they have cleaned the the stench out and turned enough pages they can start to move this thing forward but I'd like the idea of Z Williams being part of the leadership group now get him involved let him be part of that group that has the ear of the coaching staff that can take a message back to the locker room can see how the system is supposed to work in terms of that relationship between the coach and the players and the other part there is I think

1:22:10it would make some sense if this is all about the rebuild and committing to young players why wouldn't you want to empower one of your young players to maybe take the issues of the other young guys in that room if there are other guys that don't feel comfortable going to the coach or speaking up against some of the veteran guys if you've got Zeeve in that leadership group I just think it sort of paves the way for the young guys to have a voice that that can be heard and in time yes Zeeve Williams certainly projects like the kind of guy that would be captain material but I'm not going to sit here and proclaim that he you know it should be or has to be at this stage so I think my vote would be to go without a captain for this season and you hope that you know the high character high quality guys that they made a point of bringing in and Luke Shen and Brendan Gallagher and Jamie Alexiac that their voices that their experience is going to hold everybody else in that room in check and obviously that's been an issue here for far too long you talked

1:23:11about the approach in this contract they could cover some of their ass by doing this on a couple of other fronts if they want to probably most notably for a guy like Liam O'Grinn we asked that on the weekend is an additional poll question but should the connects consider going long term on this guy who has while he has one less point in the NHL than Zeeve Williams 25 career points so maybe he's eight point five million dollars in a per per year you know what I'm saying though do they do they go long term with this guy and and think that he may bust out and whatever that means is in the eye of the bow holder yeah I'm not in nearly the rush to get this thing done by next week that you know and not that I felt pressure for either side with Zeeve Williams but I'm not surprised that William beat the clock and was able to get his eight year contract I think you know for the connection you'd have to find a number that absolutely made sense and would reflect the escalating cap to Liam O'Grinn and I just don't think we have any idea you know what kind of

1:24:16player like he's a massive wild card there were some nights where you couldn't take your eye off him and you thought damn like you know the component parts of there you understand why he was a mid-teen first-round draft choice when he was but for a big guy there were also a lot of nights where he was just too quiet and lefty wanting and I think wing is the easiest position to fill on your roster and to find guys that can play and I think there are legitimate questions with Liam O'Grinn and he's still young enough like this is the knock on him but you know is he more than a middle six guy like is he gonna top out as a third line contributor and good teams need solid third line contributors as well but with first-round pedigree you want to believe that there is more there and so if I'm Liam O'Grinn I'm probably betting on myself in this case and I might be willing to take the bridge here and like hear me when I say I'm not using this comparison player to player but we know a guy like a Todd Brutuzzi came in the league raw materials the physical presence was there took him

1:25:20a while to find his footing and it might for Liam O'Grinn as well and as the gap goes up if I'm Liam O'Grinn I probably take a shorter-term deal understanding that I'm betting on myself here and you know can hit the home run on the contract after the next one so I don't think that there's a real rush to lock in for eight years at this point all right Jeff a lot of people back to work back to school back to routines today and thinking and searching hockey for the first time in a while set us up for the week ahead in Kinnokland yeah veterans continued to skate they were at Britannia on Friday I popped by and now look at them at the home of their future training facility we'll see funny scene there guys the other day just the contrast of you know and all the veterans Elias Patterson and Brockhead's tour took Friday off but everybody else was on the ice I think there were 27 bodies so you do the math there well over a hundred million dollars in payroll they're on the ice and there's a multi-purpose room at Britannia and remember this is a community

1:30:37raining once again over the NFL well guys Nicky McCormick I'm not gonna play tomorrow night but including him they've got 10 you can really 10 of 11 starters because Rick Mullen wasn't a full-time starter last year he rotated with Josh Job and Kobe Bryant at safety is the only starter true starter they lost off that Super Bowl champion defense the one that was number one in the NFL at points a lot last year that fact alone is going to keep them games even when they turn the ball over or don't move on offense even when to Dario and Price maybe doesn't do what they drafted into do in the running game the defense is again going to be a signature card for this team Mike Mcdonald's got some new fronts some new blitzes some new places for Byron Murphy to come from tomorrow night starting tomorrow night against the Patriots that the league hasn't seen it's going to be a defensive driven first part of the season I think it is curious to say the least that they have a new offensive coordinator who's never done this at any level playing playing plays before they're

1:31:39fourth play collar on offense in four years he only became an offensive coach Brian Flurry in 2020 when Kyle Shanahan moved him from defensive quality control to offensive quality before that he was a defensive coach for his 20 plus years in coaching including its sacred heart university in Connecticut as a defensive coordinator that's the only the coordinator jubbies ever had and now the Super Bowl champions are turning their offense over to him that's a curiosity they're based on the run as we all know they ran 50% of the time last year spent most of the season number one in the league and rush rate and now they're turning the running game over to a back who wasn't even a starter in his college team in Jadari and Price in Notre Dame the first round pick hasn't played a game of any kind since November 29th Notre Dame at Stanford on the farm that is self-secureiosity because they decided to hold them out and bubble wrap them in the pre-season all that's a long way to say there's a ton of questions on offense and not too many on defense and I think that's where they'll win the game tomorrow and win for the first half of the season I

1:32:41wonder this about big leagues particularly North America here for a long time too when you're defending especially in football where every game is like a car crash physically for these players like how do you maintain the edge the drive that you had the first time around to win a Super Bowl when you just want you know the the crowd is still on your head as you play this whole season and it costs so much physically man it's tough like I can't imagine it's one thing to do it in a 20 team league but in a 32 team league 34 team league some day like it's I can't imagine what it's like to just stare down that hallway that is interminably long and and want to be at the end of it yeah I mean the Marcus Lawrence asked himself that question age 34 this off season he decided to come back for one go around it's a huge leadership challenge from Mike McDonald in the veterans to round them all up again and motivate them in a different way to try to replicate the culture they had in the locker room

1:33:44last season that is McDonald's number one challenge and he started off in the off season by saying let's run it forward instead of running it back let's perfect our process how much better can we get toward perfection than we were last season I mean yeah they won the Super Bowl but Sam Donald led the league in in turnovers and that's unusual in itself they have a quarterback who leads league in turnovers you still win it all a large reason why they won it all is he didn't turn it over at all in the postseason so cond Arnold cond Arnold turn it over fewer times during the season how much more efficient confidence would be that's one place they can improve in but you're right Blake you have to have a confluence of all the factors there is in sports and in football go your way to win a Super Bowl injuries momentum other teams injuries turnovers it in opportune time for the other team weather seating but the other teams are doing in the conference all these things have to go just so and the only times the only times the sea hugs have made the Super Bowl in their history they've been the number one seed in the NFC and home through the banter class so if all those

1:34:47factors don't go see out of the way and they don't get the number one seed history says they're not going back and they got the Rams in their own division on top of all of that so you're right every season we all say oh what are the chances every looks like every Super Bowl chain was going to repeat every September right and very few ever do it's because all those factors have to go your team's way for a second consecutive year that's those odds aren't good so on that score Greg what did we learn about them via the hard knocks sir they had avoided hard knocks for all these years under John Schneider but they rave reviews people honestly I thought it was a lot of fun I first time in a while I found myself making sure I watched all the hard knocks tell me what did we learn about them in hard knocks with regards to everything you just said well I think you got a glimpse of Mike McDonnell I see it every day in his leadership and how he is and how self-defeating he is and how vulnerable he is and breaking up talking to the team but also bring him since mentor and Baltimore who passed away they'll ask that's a side that the public doesn't get to see

1:35:53so it was brand new to them and I think that made Mike McDonnell the national star and the coaching star and everyone went to play for it was a great PR series for Seahawks to attract veterans from other teams to come out here look how beautiful the weather the flying eagles the coach wow this place looks cool but they haven't lost the game yet so of course it looked great but yes McDonnell was by far the star of the show I think you got to see the behind the scenes of the culture they didn't want to reveal too much of too many of their secret sauce stuff but they showed enough to show you why they think they won the Super Bowl last year that togetherness the shadow boxing the things we see on the sidelines we could of course we can never go into the training room for instance and be right there with Bud Clark talking to his wife after he broke his ankle in Tennessee and his working season was over those kind of things are always glimpses that fans can really appreciate the brutality of the sport the Jake Bobo injury that has happened right in front of me in Nashville and enjoying practice but without a doubt the Mike McDonald the takeaway was

1:36:58Mike McDonald's a pretty cool cat who's doing some stuff leadership-wise it's different you don't have too many NFL coaches as vulnerable it's you don't have too many NFL coaches who just stop practice or chain cancel meetings to have walkin talks where they walk around and say what's your why what was your greatest part of your summer what's your greatest thing a challenge of being a father they walk around the practice field and they do that during game weeks during a regular season instead of X's and O scheming so that they can become bonded together that's all that's kind of new stuff yeah Mike McDonald's the son of a West Point graduate but he ain't really just a hard line army dude he's got a little bit of nuance and some new age vulnerability. 1:38:00rest of the league's looking like and try to find a running back an elite running back on a bad team an elite receiver on a bad team and and fortify that offense a little bit I think they're gonna do that even if price is going well you can't get through an entire season with two or three backs we've seen that I covered a Seahawks team about eight years ago that had eighteen different running backs with Paul Kerry the ball in one season that was the year that Martian Lynch came out of retirement on Christmas Eve and said Mary new year and threw his hands up like Eddie Murphy that they're gonna need far more than price in Hullani they've got a manual Wilson in from green bay he's a 500 year back last season for the Packers they got him on a one year no wrist deal he's gonna be the third down short yardage back he missed a lot of the preseason with a hamstring injury most of august in fact but he's better now and healthy full go but you just can't get by with three dudes so they don't have much experience back there they have vellis jones on the practice squad they have jacquardy right this preseason star in the practice squad but to your point

1:39:01experience proven guys in the league they don't have and I think they are going to be continuing to shop for that and charred in a few weeks is that what they're saying well yesterday Mcdonald was glowing and saying that he looks awesome he's got his own timeline that we're not going to disclose but he can't come back until the earliest of after four weeks he's going to have missed the first four weeks of the season on the physical and able to perform with and there's no way somebody's going to come off reconstructed knee surgery and the week that he's eligible to return right onto the field play so you're going to have a ramp up period it's probably going to last most of october even if he comes back in the after four weeks I wouldn't expect to see him till november at the earliest but that is a factor for later in the season yes you mentioned jadarian price the first round draft pick running back out of the university in odour dame and the only reason he wasn't a starter there is because jerem i love was there and of course the kama top five picked to the Arizona cardinals give us the scouting report what kind of a running back is he have similar different is he to super bowl MVP can'teth walker he's much less patient than walker mad he doesn't

1:40:03wait and and set up blocks like levy on bell style like walker did he's a one cut and go guy he's a very decisive cut guy they think the outside zone fits him because of that because of his decisiveness and cutting he hasn't proven to be a third down back catching the ball or past blocking because as you said he wasn't even on the field most of the time at noter dame because it was behind jerem i love so that's his biggest learning curve third down and i think george halani's going to be the third down back from most of the early season because of it they've worked a hell out of him in past protection and past catching i mean tomas hammock the new running backs coach during training camp with price it looked like a bullpen catcher in a picture throwing to him between starts how much they were throwing to him it was just pass after pass after pass to price you're gonna get his opportunities but i think that's the slow go on the rest of his rounding out his game he's going to be the number one back they didn't draft him in the first round to having sit behind george halani or anybody else but for him to be a three down back it's going to take him

1:41:05improving still in the past game so gregg you mentioned sam darnald and all the turnovers last year and then the total absence of turnovers in the postseason i mean we all remember the Rams game and the four interceptions that he throws they lose that first game to the Rams last year has he spoken to or have the reasons been identified as to why he was so turnover prone in the regular season and how he was able to flip that script entirely 180 degrees in the postseason well the coaches will tell you they weren't all of darnald's fault but the quarterback gets the blame there were some route problems there were some protection issues but he also had a hard time turning holding on to the ball in traffic when there's fresh pressures came in close to him he often dropped about think of the opener against san francisco with luhrman field last year they're inside the ten yard line in the final minute and nick boasts of pushes a blukus right into darnald and darnald just dropped the ball game over so there are some things he can do just in ball

1:42:05security wise i think that is the huge key beside the run game with price if darnald can even reduce his turnovers from 20 plus of last year to say 15 how much more efficient this offense is going to be how many more fewer how many fewer times they won't turn the ball over to an offense and give the defense a short field to have to defend there aren't a lot of teams in this league guys the current way that ciox defense is a lot of a lot of teams including drake manuing the neck and drive multiple times down the field for multiple touchdowns in a game on mcnonald's defense that's how they won the super bowl that's how they won week 18 in san francisco so if darnald just doesn't give team short fields ciox are going to win most games by that fact alone so he knows that he just has to be if he's going to take a sack take a sack they'll punt and play defense rather than take it throw the ball up on third down things like that he just doesn't want to piss off his defense by making them work too hard and too much all game

1:44:10they were cussing out coaches they were cussing out players they were cussing out the quarterback it was a free throw in there they were throwing cans and but they were pissed and they that was such a different vibe than this team this team in the locker room was different after the super bowl because it was all big one room in santa claire but offensive guys are hugging defensive guys and it's just a different vibe and that's all clear to mickey down on the culture he's made well i read the john shneider said uh one of the things he perceived about the last time they won the super bowl is they brought in all these draft picks who were just completely deferential to the likes of sherman and some of the leaders on offense and defense and he wanted these uh new c hawks to sort of jump in and rise the competitiveness of practices and well just about everything they do going back to you know the p caraldays competed all times uh so it seems like they look for a different profile of personality in terms of filling in the gaps of this recent super bowl champion uh i got

1:45:10to ask you about the situation in the second day uh secondary and corner back because uh you mentioned rake woollen who moved on they went out and they signed travon digs who led the NFL in interceptions in 2021 and then terrian arnold who's facing eight felony counts in florida and saw the heart knocks episode which john shneider saying like really this guy's got such great character references but it does speak to and smack of some desperation there Greg uh tell us arnold digs how much you think they'll get on the field and uh how worried should they be about defending the passing game with the situation at corner well travon digs will get on the field as soon as he's ready spun up wise legs under him and knows the defense if michael donnell was happy with what they had post rake woollen they would have never gone down the terrian arnold rabbit hole they would have never gone and signed travon digs who hasn't had a full season the leaks since 2022 with the cowboys they tried me am i appreciative to start a training camp the third year unproven

1:46:14former drap pick from obber and fifth round pick he couldn't tackle anybody so then they tried no agbenogany the veteran former mayami dolphins first round pick who was a starter for dan quinon commanders as a nickel back but they don't need a nickel back they need an outside corner so they can move devon witherspoon inside mcdonald wants to play with us been more inside at nickel decision he did last year and he wants to blitz him from there more so that he can impact the game he thinks that witherspoon is a better asset to the defense against the run and the pass inside at nickel rather than outside so you got to have a third corner you can trust outside and that's what woollen woollen came out though his trust factor was shaky at times with some of the penalties blessed that he had but i think guys they are already regretting letting greek woollen go for $12 million in one year to fill it out if you the arnold situation is a layaway deal not just for maybe the end of this season but because he only has two years of service time he can be in a restricted or exclusive right
