The relationship started toward the end of May 2024 and became physically intimate over the following months in places like California, New York, Colorado, Arizona, and Washington, DC. Now the man's ex-wife is suing Sinema in a North Carolina federal court for breaking up there. Marriage, seeking financial damages under the state's alienation of affection laws. Heather Amel claimed she and her husband Matthew had a strong marriage until Sinema pursued him, even though she knew he was married. Matthew joined Sinema's security detail after retiring from the army in 2022. The couple separated in November 2024 and Heather says she found romantic messages between them on a secure app early that year. The laws have started in North Carolina state court last September before moving to federal court in January. Sinema's team once had dismissed, saying no jury would buy that a single message wrecked the marriage. Sinema left the Senate early last year after one term as an independent skipping re-election in 2024. She now works at a Washington legal and lobbying firm while the case plays out.
