Senator Meyer Leaves Senate for Justice Center

0:00I'm Cory, and this is your Pulse of the City, Durham News Today. Democratic State Senator Greg Meyer from North Carolina is stepping down from his seat later this month. He represents Orange, Person, and Caswell Counties, and had filed to run for a second term back in December. Now he's taking over as Executive Director of the NC Justice Center, a non-profit pushing for economic opportunity and racial equity across the state. Meyer did not face a primary challenger this year, and would have gone up against Republican Laura Pachardo in the general election on November 3rd. He says he had no idea about the Justice Center job when he filed for re-election. Meanwhile, Democratic parties in those three counties are kicking off a nomination process this month. Local leaders will send nominees to Democratic Governor Josh Stein, who will pick Meyer's replacement. That person will also appear on the November ballot. This mirrors how Meyer himself got appointed to the State House back in 2013. Over his career, Meyer worked as a social worker and educator.

1:02He co-founded an equity group, led mentoring programs, and served eight years in the house before winning his Senate seat in 2022. At the Justice Center, a 30-year-old group, he'll focus on areas like education, health care, workers' rights, immigrant support, criminal, justice, and housing.
