About this episode
This short episode addresses the following: Are you an open book or extremely private? Where are you on the spectrum of self disclosure and what are the implications of this? Is this healthy? Is it helping your relationships and connections or interfering with them? How does self disclosure impact your mental health? Beth encourages listeners to think about where they want to be on the sharing continuum. Do you want to be an open book who shares everything indiscriminately with anyone who will listen? Or do you want to be a closed book who shares nothing with anyone and avoids being vulnerable at all costs? Where are you on the spectrum and why are you there and where do you want to be? Another aspect of self disclosure relates to what percentage of your story do you want to share? Beth often urges her clients to avoid being all or nothing with self disclosure (and many other areas). For instance you could share 5% or 100% of your story or about what is going on. You don’t have to tell them every detail or even be extremely specific. Sometimes sharing even a fraction of your story is extremely healing and therapeutic. It helps us and it helps others.
