The University of Massachusetts defeated Rutgers last night, ending college football's longest running losing street. That's how bad UMass is. But they beat Rutgers last night. Now, ironically, Rutgers paid the University of Massachusetts $1.5 million to be its weak one opponent and Massachusetts beat them. And then Rutgers accidentally set off the fireworks display. They lost, but they set off the fireworks display anyway. I just, my goodness gracious. The funny, it reminds me when was it? When was it?

3:09What it reminded me of UMass getting paid to play Rutgers beats Rutgers. Is it that like the Georgia state getting paid by Tennessee to play Tennessee and curb stomping Tennessee some time ago? I don't know why I would think about that all of a sudden, but I was just reminded of that happening. Philip is a Tennessee fan. Don't want to rub that source spot in. Tennessee, this is their year. They're going to do great this year. They are. It is football season friends this weekend. Many of us male and female will watch football. Now, I actually do want to spend a minute here on this. A lot of people got deeply annoyed with Colin Kaepernick and the way the NFL wove Black Lives Matters and taking knees and stuff into football and the ratings went down. An unlike basketball, football recovered in large part

4:15because they cut the politics out. My friend Ben Sass, the former senator from Nebraska and president of University of Florida. He's still with us, thank God. As a dad who has spent the past month driving a high school freshman to two a day, often 100 degree practices, I'm deliriously invested. But you don't have to be a football fanatic to grasp that today for 12 to 18 year old boys, this sport has never been more important. While controversy surrounds the embarrassingly blurry lines

5:20between College Football and the National Football League, our culture needs to take a moment to commend and steward the glorious traditions of high school football. East, not wrong. And there are a lot of people today who genuinely hate football because they pursue, perceive it as being too masculine. Girls not allowed. We can't do this. It's really kind of pathetic how the wokes have gone after football, but also how the leaders of football have also polluted it with politics. A little more from sass on this. And again, I think this is a deeply relevant piece from him. Across cultures and time, four major institutions have formed young men,

6:21family religion, work, and war. By demanding effort and sacrifice each of these model boys into men, parents raised sons to be husbands and fathers, scriptures demanded grappling with human nature, sin and salvation, work looked at needs and forged character and grit, war or more broadly the obligation to protect your community, harnessed, strength, the service. Today, war and work have faded. Thankfully, violence has been pushed to the periphery of most societies to a degree ancient and medieval people never can see possible. The world is still dangerous and humanity still capable of unspeakable evil, but more neighborhoods bear little resemblance to lawless frontiers of old. Our continental nation is blessed with good neighbors and big oceans, and most violence is constrained through order liberty. This isn't cheap. The men and women who defend us pay a steep price. There's always the risk of imagining peace is the natural autopilot order of things rather than a stunning achievement that requires ongoing vigilance. But it's a blessing that less than 1%

7:23of the population serves in America's all-volunteer military. Unfortunately, work has faded as a formative experience. When I was growing up in Nebraska, detastling corn was a red passage. We woke up at 4.30 in the morning to slog through fields from cold morning dew through to blazing midday heat. Today, the cornhouse curve traditions have been rendered all but extinct by new technology. Farm countries in the only place that this is happening, teenage work has been evaporating across the country since the 1980s. Only 35% of teenagers had a summer job this year. Technology is on pace to eliminate many remaining starter jobs like flipping burgers and running checkouts. This is an economic reality and on the whole, it leads to greater prosperity, but we should acknowledge the trade-offs. As war and work have faded, two new institutions fill the void, bureaucratized schooling and digital media. On net, both are developments for the worse. Institutionalized childhood is soul crushing. In the early 20th century, we industrialize nearly everything, but a great way to manufacture cars is a rotten way to shape souls. An acorn doesn't

8:24become an oak on an assembly factory line. Factory model education requires young men passive indoors that on receive mode, kids are naturally inquisitive, but modern schoolings too often designed to anesthetize curiosity. The doom scroll makes matters even worse. Digital media has a profoundly negative effect on young men. Temptations to distraction are addiction and real, they're real. According to the Institute for Family Studies, 27% of men 18 to 29 are daily porn consumers, and almost as many now gamble daily. They're withdrawing from the real world and loneliness and helplessness 61% report feeling little control over the things that happen in their lives. That's a slow burning crisis. Young men need to celebrate and harness themselves. They need to harness masculinity. We need young men full of energy and ambition. Football is a character forming institution the channel strength. In a world of instant gratification, it teaches perseverance through early practice and aching muscles. In an era of isolation, football creates community. It forms brotherhood

9:25through both misery and joy. In a culture of passivity, football privileges action. In times of peace, football prepares us for war. Football simultaneously celebrates and constrains violence. It teaches the difference between boyhood and manhood, between self-indulgence and self-restraint. Football done right creates the conditions for less rather than more violence and bars. And it goes on from there. I want to just read you the last paragraph from Benzass. The Apostle Paul never picked up a blitz. The Apostle Paul never recovered an on-side kick. But the Apostle Paul taught that suffering produces perseverance and perseverance produces character. And that's something that will rightly be cheered under Friday night lights all across the country this fall. Paul was in the more important business of saving souls. The gridiron offers no eternal comfort, but East to Eden will always need strong and selfless men. That's why we owe our

10:25boys football. Now, I got to tell you, my wife wanted a son. She desperately wanted a son and we had a daughter. And I was like, I grew up with two older sisters. We're going to have a son. This is great. I would prefer to have an older sister with a brother, but my wife said, no, no, we need the oldest to be the boy and the youngest be the girl because I wanted an older brother. Well, God had plans. Our oldest is a girl. Our youngest is a boy. And when our boy was born, my wife said he's going to play football. He is going to be our football star. I'm going to get you football. I'm going to go to the games. You don't know anything about football. And I admit, I grew up in a desert. We had camel racing. I've learned to love football. My wife learned at an early age to love football. She's like, our son is going to play football. And then he started growing. And she's like, I don't want my baby playing football. She's like, nope, I don't want to play football. I don't want him out there. I don't want him to get hurt. So our son never played football. He played soccer.

11:31He played baseball a little bit. He played tennis. He's played golf. My son has given me a concussion and amnesia playing golf. I forgot he was a lefty in stood in front of him knelt down to helping with a swing and got the full forward force of a seven iron to the side of my head. And that's the last thing I remember for two weeks. Now, and I should say, I have vague memories of certain things happening during those two weeks, but my family keeps telling these stories of things that I did for those two weeks. And at this point, I'm pretty sure they're making them up. I am pretty adamant that my family has made up stories about me. And I don't, I can't push back on them. But that does not sound like me. Like, for example, I hate the wildberry pop tarts. I despise wildberry pop tarts. I don't like fruit. I'll eat an apple, but I don't like fruit. I like the brown sugar pop tarts. My family insists that during the the moments of my head injury, I was insisting on wildberry pop tarts and got mad at them when they brought me the brown sugar

12:34pop tarts. And I'm like, there's no way I ordered a wildberry pop tarts from any of you people, because I don't like them. And my wife's like, you got really mad at us when we didn't bring you the wildberry pop tarts. I don't remember. I apparently I didn't eat it. I just got mad at them for I don't remember any of it. Philip tells me that I got deeply incensed, because I gave his brother a laptop and then didn't remember his brother coming and get the laptop and was angry that his brother hadn't come to get the laptop, but his brother had come and had gotten a lot of them. Your mind is a crazy thing. And I don't know how it all works. But my son did tennis and my son did golf. My son did soccer. He did not do football. My wife was afraid her baby would get hurt. But we watch it. I grew up nowhere near football games. Didn't know anything about football. My dad was a football coach and a basketball coach. I will sit on my porch this weekend with friends and we will smoke cigars, drink a little bourbon, have some food, and we're going to

13:37watch football games. There will not be political conversations. There is mortal life and politics and I think people get so wrapped up in the politics of the day and age that they forget all the other stuff and they weave politics and they think, look at all the outrage over the Odyssey movie. The Odyssey movie, what wasn't a political movie and yet people wanted to bring politics into it. Which restaurant you eat at become political? What you eat becomes political? Look at the the steak and shake guys going all mega. We're we're using beef talo. We're mega meals. I've seen social media influencers so excited. They went to steak and shake and it's a mega meal. They call it. I there's no no. I don't want my food political and I don't want sports political. It's one reason the NBA and the WNBA do not make for good TV. One on the NBA, there's no team sport anymore. It's just which guys can get the three pointers and they're all super political and people don't want to watch that stuff. The WNBA, the only reason people watch is to see who beats up

14:40Caitlin Clark and who throws a six toy on the field or on the floor. I was intrigued by some of the the pride month football that we had during World Cup. Some of those games were actually kind of impressive but it's still not football. I watched baseball games. I like to go to the baseball field. I love the braves and the cubs. The cubs and the braves. I grew up with the cubs as my team. I adopted the braves. I love them both. I do. They're good teams. They got great players. Danzby Swanson is a great player. On the cubs, he was with the braves. I actually do think that Matt Olson was an upgrade from Freddy Feevin. I liked Freddy, but Olson, he's an improvement. It's also very tall by the way. I like the braves. I like baseball. I like to go to the stadium. In fact, I would rather go to a baseball stadium and watch a baseball game than go to a football game. I would rather sit on my porch and watch football with friends. The view is far better. There's something about a baseball stadium though. That's fantastic. I love baseball. But watching football with friends and not

15:43talking politics, we could all use a little more of that. And I miss it when it goes away because the the strum and drag of life cuts in. But football is back and we should enjoy it and we should encourage it and we should like it and we should encourage the people who play it. It's a statue of limitations. It is not a statute of limitations. It is a statue of limitations. I don't want you to make friends. I want a person is going to be out there saying we're going isolationist. Okay. I don't think you're going to live here without even marching in the streets so that all of our politicians just oblige them. And yeah, so if we're going to do it, like if we're going to do the thing and we're going to say we're not going to be isolationists. It's an isolationist. Hang on,

But hey, my question is, you know, back at the beginning of the year, we kept hearing a lot about, I believe it was the son of the exiled Shah of Iran, Palavia, I can remember his first name. Yeah, reasonable. And his son,

28:30his son that's the next, I'll now currently in so life, but he was talking about going back and leading some kind of movement in Iran and, you know, changing the world. And then also, after the war started, he's kind of disappeared from the news, at least that I've been aware of. Do you know if he's still out there plotting something or why? Yeah, if you want me to text him, I can. I've got his number. He also has Reza Plavi. His father was the Shah Reza Plavi. And he is too. So he has sold everyone on the idea of building a coalition of the democratic parties of Iran to go back in. And he has Shah because he has the, he has greater support than anyone else to go in, that he would go in and he would essentially serve as a British monarch overseen the checks and balances and ensuring the transition of Iran from a, a theocratic regime to a democracy.

29:30And he's gotten buy-in from most of the parties in Iran, but he doesn't have buy-in for the President. The President's not sold on the idea. The Israelis are apparently sold on the idea, in large part because he has so much support within the country still. But it's a matter of getting the Americans and the Israelis to collapse the President regime for him to be able to go in and do it. He doesn't have a military. There's no mercenary group that's loyal to him to be able to go in and do it. He will rely on the Americans and the Israelis to destabilize the regime. The Israelis from, I am led to believe, from various people that the Israelis are trying to again convince the President that he should allow them to go in and destabilize the regime. The President wants to let the economic sanctions work a little bit longer if he can. But there's just no guarantee that the economic sanctions are going to come quickly and be able to destabilize the regime as quickly as the President wants. In fact, there are a lot of people out there who think that we're going to be dealing this with this for a while

30:33and the Republicans are starting to panic a little bit, frankly, because they really want this wrapped up as quickly as possible. And I don't think we're going to get this wrapped up as quickly as possible. This is the President in an interview talking about Iran. Look, I'm there because we have to stop them from having a little weapon and it is in the Middle East. And we've done that. Look, we've defeated the Navy, we've defeated their Air Force, we've defeated them, their leaders have gone. Everything has gone just about there. We just hit them again last night and we took out their radar. They just put a new radar in. We control the Harmos straight. We have great control over the Harmos too. We're taking out 30, 40 butts of night and a lot of oil is coming out of there. So we control the Harmos straight and their economy is crashing. Their inflation could be 300 percent. Their money is valueless. They're equivalent of the

31:35dollar but their money is valueless. If you look at what's happened to their, the dollar is strong and their money is literally of no value. It's 2 million to one or something like that. And it's going up every day. So they're in big trouble. They are in big trouble. And what's so notable to me is how the media is suddenly shifty. This, let me give you two headlines. This is from Politico. Arab diplomats fear Iran is widening the war and there's no way out. And this from the New York Times, a more confident Iran emerges after six months of war with the US. New intelligence reports have assessed that Iran now has a far better understanding of its capabilities and the limits of American power. It's one of the reasons we should not have stopped bombing. The military wanted to bomb for 13 more days than the president allowed. And there was fear that the Iranians could regroup and figure this sort of stuff out. And it appears that they might, let me read you this. Iran has grown more confident in its ability to attack targets in the Middle East and appears

32:35determined to continue the conflict for months to frustrate the United States. In many respects, the assessments of US intelligence community reflect what has been observable on the ground as fighting erupted again after a period of relative calm. In the past week, Iran targeted ships in the straight of Formuz and American troops in the region and US forces struck inside Iran, killing military personnel and civilians. The new exchanges have been limited so far, but the intelligence reports according to people who've read them suggest that Iran's hardline government might be contemplating a significant escalation. Iran has emerged from months of the Aunion-Aufian war with a far better understanding of its military strengths and is more sure of its capabilities according to officials briefed on the intelligence. The reports, some current and former officials said, suggested any agreement fully in the war would be hard to reach. There are a few signs that Iran is ready to make any sort of deal with the United States. I've been telling you this for the last number of days, with the reports out that we are short of Patriot missiles, with the reports out that we're short of surface-to-surface missiles, and with reports out that our military says a prolonged effort is not sustainable,

33:37that's just asking for Iran to engage in a major escalation. As I'm talking to you, there are unconfirmed and I must stress unconfirmed reports that missiles have been seen launched from Iran. We don't know where they've gone, where these are again unconfirmed reports. And there is going to be a serious escalation. There's going to be some serious escalation by Iran. I'm just pretty sure of it because the fact of the matter is, Iran needs to break out of its economic stranglehold and the only thing it can do to break out of it is military action where Iran attacks its neighbors so that its neighbors didn't position us to stop what's going on. That's it. We'll see if I'm right. I hope I'm not, I hope I'm not right, but I think I'm right. Iran is going to try to escalate this thing. You need to escalate.
