Ryan Kelly Retires After NFL Career

The 32-year-old made the announcement on social media, calling it an incredible ride and thanking his family and teammates. He signed a two-year $18 million deal with the Vikings last season. His retirement frees up about $2 million in cap space for the team. It comes amid other big moves, like releasing players such as Jonathan Allen, Javan Hargrave and Aaron Jones. Kelly ended last year on injured reserve after a concussion, part of a history of head injuries from his time with both the Vikings and the Indianapolis Colts. Before Minnesota, Kelly spent nine years with the Colts, earning four pro-bow selections and a second team all pro-honor in 2020. Drafted in the first round out of Alabama in 2016, he stayed efficient on the field despite setbacks, posting in 82.2.

1:01Offensive grade last season, Kelly joins a wave of centers stepping away this off season. Los Angeles Chargers Bradley Boseman and Chicago Bears Drew Daumann also retired recently, both with time left on their contracts. Daumann was just 27 and coming off his first pro-bowl year. Meanwhile, former Detroit Lions Center Frank Ragnar retired last June after seven seasons marred by injuries.
