It's March 24th. Welcome in. This is Canada News Today, where local news meets AI. I'm Cory with the story. Russia launched a rare daytime drone attack on the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, killing free people and wounding 22 others. The strike hit a building in the historic city center, setting it ablaze and damaging part of a UNESCO World Heritage Monastery complex. This came after an overnight bombardment that killed five across Ukraine. More than 550 drones targeted Ukraine during the day, a big shift from Russia's typical nighttime assaults in this war, now over four. Years long, all told, nearly 1,000 long-range drones have been fired at Ukraine since Monday evening, along with dozens of missiles. Ukrainian President Belodomir Zelensky said the attacks prove Russia wants to keep fighting, urging more pressure on Moscow to force peace talks. Thousands in Lviv, far from the front lines, were shocked to see drones in broad daylight near a crowded area close to the Polish border.
In other spots like Ivano-Frankewsk, a National Guard soldier and his 15-year-old daughter died in a strike while one person was killed, and 13 wounded in Vinizia. Air defenses down hundreds of drones and missiles, but damage hit energy sites and caused power issues spilling into Moldova. Belensky renewed calls for allies to send more air defense supplies, as Ukraine braces for shortages amid ongoing Russian barrages.
