Roof's Return: BC's New Defensive Coordinator

0:00On March 12, Ted Roof, Boston College's new defensive coordinator, stepped out of retirement to join head coach Bill O'Brien this season. After 37 years coaching college in Pro Football, Roof got fired from UCF in October 2024 and was enjoying life away from the game. Then O'Brien reached out with an offer, Roof couldn't pass up. The two have a long history, working as coordinators together at Georgia Tech from 1998 to 2001, overlapping at Duke and later reuniting when O'Brien led Penn State in 2012. Last year's Eagles defense right near the bottom nationally, 126 out of 134 teams. Roof saw O'Brien's plan to turn things around and jump in, bringing fresh energy to the staff and players right away. Players have bought into his approach, pushing through a grueling off-season program that tested everyone. Roof's the first to praise good plays or fix mistakes, setting a high standard every day in practice, the weight room and film sessions.
