0:00On April 29th, Roger Sweet, the man who dreamed up he-man passed away Tuesday at 91 after fighting dementia. As Lee designed our Mattel back in the 70s and 80s, he crafted the Musclebound Hero that launched a massive toy line in 1982 and sparked one of the biggest cartoons of the decade. Mattel had missed out big time on the Star Wars toy deal in 1976, which handed a gold mine to another company after the movie dropped year later. Sweet got creative, modding a big gym figure with clay for that ripped look, then pitched the prototype straight to the top brass and nailed it. The he-man toys blew up, so in 1983, Mattel teamed with Filmation for the cartoon set on Planet Eternia. It followed Prince Adam transforming into the ultimate warrior, running strong for 130 episodes over two years and hooking kids, everywhere with its epic battles. Fast forward, and the franchise is roaring back with the live-action Masters of the Universe movie, hitting theaters June 5th.
