Rochdale Gets £16.67M for Flood Defences

0:00On March 17th, Rochdale is set to receive 16,670,000 pounds from the government to strengthen its flood defenses. This funding forms part of a 1.4 billion-pound national investment by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Construction is already underway on the Rochdale and Littleboro Flood Risk Management Scheme, led by the local council and Environment Agency. The cash will help push forward work to secure the banks of the river rush. The scheme will protect 337 homes and 185 businesses through new flood storage reservoirs and defense walls along the river. Approved in 2020, the project responds to the severe boxing day floods of 2015 that hit the borough hard. Officials note it will shield families from sudden devastation and support community recovery. Across England, this joins 600 similar efforts in the largest flood defense program ever, backed by 10.5 billion pounds until 2036, creating jobs and enabling safer growth in flood
