Welcome to the latest episode of Tolkien Tottenham with myself, Ryan Taylor and Art Sleep the Pride, Spurs Correspondent, Alistair Gold. Ali, let's touch just on the final hours of the window because I know you are working so late, too late in fact. I mean give us an insight into what you were kind of doing in those last final hours because although Spurs got two in it was kind of quiet in a sense wasn't it? The window really was. I don't think even in my wildest dreams or nightmares whatever you want to call it, at the start of the window I would have thought I'd be working, I don't know, it was almost past 2am because of a late deal for Tottenham and Adderabaiu from Chelsea that only went through just near the deadline and then the final deal sheet, the only deal sheet that Spurs put

1:02in being downed scarlet making a permanent move for late anorin. It was it was a strange end to the window which obviously started in this kind of blaze of glory with all the exciting kind of early transfers. It was it was a strange one and obviously then we had as we'll discuss a certain Brazilian and all the kind of stuff around Richarlison, Willie Wonty and all of that so it was a day where you kind of went to write stuff, didn't know whether you could write it, we're getting different information and it was a little bit like our last edition of this podcast actually which ended up being almost the most entirely redundant podcast ever because obviously anyone listened to it, we've spoke about Ileman and Jay who went to Man City in the end and we did warn on the podcast, we said that's the problem we're doing a podcast this closely in the window that something that felt like it was I wouldn't say we felt it was 100% going in the direction of Tottenham but it was feeling a little bit more confident at that time, all you needed is a change in circumstances. I think we even spoke about Gakapodem we and the fact that you know that could end up switching cities focus

2:06and all this sort of stuff and learn behold, I think it was within a couple of hours of the podcast actually going up because there's a little bit of a delay obviously in the time it takes the idiot and things like that by the time it came out, I think it pretty much he was almost on his way to city but that's the way things go, the window is closed, hopefully spurs and the transfer gods cannot mess with this one but I'm sure they'll do their best. Yeah I mean we should flag Richarlison's futures obviously a bit up in the air at the moment will come on to discuss that properly but the the Turkish deadline is still open until today so that closes this evening which opens that possibility for the Trabs Enspore move but failing that the Saudi windows also open until Sunday so we'll try our best to kind of tackle that one but please excuse us if there is kind of movement by the time the pod goes out so let's start with a start with Tossin I mean or Tosen I should say I mean this feels like a transfer sort of three four years ago because he has been linked I know you've reported on him in the past as well he was homegrown when he was

3:10at fullham so that was an option that spurs considered a little while ago but now it has actually happened I think we documented just how kind of not frustrated but we were a little bit gutted that Kevin Danso has gone because he's a really good guy good player good score player but you can understand why he wanted to pursue that move to Sunderland but the fee was 10 million plus two in addons I mean there's only a certain caliber of player really that you can sign to become a backup as we said so although I'm not 100% kind of over the moon with this one from a top and perspective I feel like it makes sense it's a reasonable price isn't it yeah it's a funny one it's like I feel like this window has been a really weird one in the fact that a lot of the players sign have been players that the Spurs have looked at for years but also players that deserve he has looked at for years in quite a few of the cases as well and and with with Toaston yeah I think he prefers to be called that doesn't he rather than Adder of Aiu I think he said that in his little video kind of

4:12for Spurs which is helpful for me because I'm probably murdering the pronunciation of a surname anyway but yeah it's one of those where would I say he's an upgrade on Danso no I don't think he is but absolutely agree with you that I think probably the best way of putting it is that I actually think Danso asking to leave was the most problematic of the request to leave that deserve he had this summer in a weird way which is like from the outside probably people from other clubs would be thinking what is not even a main key player and nothing like that and you know you've had Romero asked to leave Sarvacario spent all of these players and obviously Spence is probably up there as well as being a bit of a problematic one too but with Danso he was just such good character aerial threat physical threat was just an all-around kind of really great squad player to have but ultimately he didn't want to just be that and I think not starting against Charlton was a bit of a it was the wrong message at a time when Sunderland were chasing him I think it just kindness essentially verified

5:15to him that yeah I'm not going to replay much am I and where Sunderland are going to make me kind of one of their starters weak in weak hell and and he knows their sporting director from the time that long together as well so I think Danso go in meant like you say they had to go for this very narrow profile of player because of the homegrown situation which of course we'll talk about with Richard Charlton and the foreign players and all of that so I had to essentially go for a player who was homegrown and also a player who while being competitive and wanting to be a starter would also accept that that wouldn't be an immediate thing for them they're going to have to try and fight for a place and they were going to be fighting with Van Hacker obviously a deserved a long time kind of essentially falling sun so that's a very narrow field and you know I know people will be thinking oh I could get better than him you can get this you get that you get this whatever but actually when you start to analyse that it is quite a small little kind of pocket of players that you can go for and do I think it's the most sensational signing of the window absolutely not could he do a job

6:17when called upon I hope so I hope so there's you know there's people that cover Chelsea that would tell you you know he hasn't been the greatest for them but he has had some moments where he's come in and he's done well so yeah it's quite interesting because he's one of Salanke's best mates as well that's a little kind of strange little kind of angle to it too and the price isn't much and what yeah we'll see is there are some people that say a bit of a leader type so it's another strong character coming to the dressing room I do wonder I feel like this has been a window of signing leaders and lots of fast players with skill but at what point do you have too many leaders and it comes like almost too many cooks in the kitchen kind of thing so I'm quite intrigued to see how they all blend and gel eventually as the season goes on but yeah it's it's not a sexy headline signing at all and I don't really think they've upgraded in that position you could argue that right side is sent back and right back are probably the two areas in the squad that have maybe been weakened in this one I think definitely have been weakened in this window really but I still don't think it's the worst transfer ever I think that's perfectly put Ali I don't think I'd

7:23disagree with any of that I think I've also seen tweets from him from kind of years ago where he seems to be talking about spurs is if he was maybe a supporter so all these kind of things you know when you take that hat off of are we need a top top centre back I think it's fair I think the only thing I'm surprised at is if you were to say at the start the window that spurs would be signing to sin on the basis of how many central defenders they had on their books I mean there's so many that have left the club this summer Vescavich Ashley Phillips who is never going to quite make it you got coach attack I got out on loan so even for traction yeah yeah Ramara and Dragassin as well sorry so I mean in terms of the market value I think that's a fair deal I mean the one that is really kind of caused a little bit of a stir is midrick because it was a bombshell really out of nowhere I mean another one that kind of when you strip everything everything back it does make sense because deserved he's got a tune out of him at Shaqtar there's that element of having

8:24something to prove he's got the high potential he's got speed it's the 75 million biopsy and that's causing a you know debate but I think we shouldn't read into that too much because ultimately if he has a great season spurs would probably look to do a deal for below that value I don't think they're going to trigger that because that's a huge feat so I'm not getting too head up on that but how do you how do you feel about this Ali is it is it one that you feel is it free here or do you feel it's a risk? I'm wearing the middle isn't it it's I just want to say because you've reminded me by saying Vescavich if you look at that window now isn't it just so ironic that they had to sell Vescavich who didn't think he was going to play didn't want to go on loan and then Dancer wants to leave at the end of the window and it's like you could have had a scenario where they kept Vescavich and he probably would have got a bit of a game time maybe not as much as he wanted but still Mudrick yeah Mudrick I mean obviously when you're trying to sign a gack bow and you're trying to sign Jay and crewpe early in the window as well obviously ending up with Mudrick with no

9:30disrespect meant to him but mainly because of his situation and the way he was at Chelsea and hasn't barely kicked a ball in competitive anger in almost two years of course it looks exactly what it kind of was let's be honest they got to the end of what was a really carefully planned and at times quite patient especially with the city boys window and it felt like they just kind of had this frantic mess at the end when I had to try and sort it out and just make sure that the squad was plugged in those certain areas I think yeah I agree that it's not the most horrendous deal in the history of the world in terms of the way it's set up because if you know he tanks at Tottenham then they just don't have him at the end of the season and he is going to be to begin with a backup squad player he is you know someone hasn't played for that long it's going to take him time going to take him a long time to get the sharpness that's required but like you say the 75 million option is crazy but on the other hand if deserved me and it's a big if of course it is but if

10:33deserved me kind of unlock the player that was at Shaqta which it was incredible there you know it's not just domestically in the Champions League as well that was where he really kind of became this bit of a shining star and if he can unlock that player because he obviously knows how he ticks he apparently like revolutionized the way he kind of just his whole methodology off the pitch in a way prepared in a way he kind of did everything in training and apparently really challenged him at Shaqta to be a better kind of player footballer to go with the talent that he's had and I you might have noticed in the kind of the quotes when he was arriving his deserving little quotes were very similar it was very much like it's down to him and if we can get the best player that I know is in there and it was very much felt like a challenge laying down the gauntlet to it thrown down the gauntlet so yeah if he can get the player he was then I think you know that they they could have a lock a little bit of a sleeper here the the summer but on the on the outset on the outlook of it from the outside it very much does look like a oh no we're run out

11:38of options oh I know Roberto knows this guy let's go for him kind of thing and also we didn't mention as well toasting the first permanent transfer from Chelsea Dispers I think since 2009 coup d'achini I think so long time since those clubs started to do business um be interested to see whether they kind of tried to get Buravau in the middle of that as well to go the other way which obviously didn't really work for them but uh yeah Mudrick it's going to be an interesting one I don't think I don't think we'll see him starting matches for a little while I'll do you would imagine the front three actually I'll ask you what's the strongest front three at the options I've got now I think it picks itself I think it's suddenly yeah there is you're right I think I think it's Savio Marmoush Kudas I think that that is a front three that that could be Manchester City's front three outside of maybe early in Holland I think it's that good I do I know all of them have got there kind of uh they've got something to prove and there's there's a lot of question marks over

12:41their consistency and things like that but I think if you you look at raw ability age kind of skill set I think that is a top forward line it's just about making it click now and maybe the rest of the team functioning properly behind them um I still look at Spurs is left flank as the one kind of area in the scored where I'm a little bit doubtful I have to be honest I think um having tell is kind of a hot on cold player a streaky player that we know on his day could be really good but it's just not quite at that level to do it consistently yet I actually prefer Savio on the right and I know we talked about him maybe prefer and to play on the left but I feel like he's marked far more effective when he's doing what he did against children coming in and letting shots fly so I feel like that's the one area where if you're looking further down the line in future transfer windows maybe that's the position that they really focus on kind of having a long-term proper solution there tell I have to be honest I don't think he's going to make it long-term at Spurs I just

13:46don't I feel like he's not quite at that level and that's not a personal attack I just feel he's not quite you know he's made this kind of uh he's kicked up not a fuss but you know he's made it clear he's wanted to play regularly but I think if you've got that kind of mindset then you need to grab the opportunities that you receive with both hands and he's just not quite there yet I think he performed very well kind of in the back end of last season even in preseason he looks so so sharp but not quite ready yet and Madrid I think could be another tell in the sense that you know he might be unstoppable one game but he's not quite at the races in other occasions I mean I do actually compare it really to Timo Werner just that everyone everyone can see the raw pace the dribbling ability but it's just the the final product and the mentality is maybe not quite there to do it consistently I mean I remember years ago I was watching a you know the early champions

14:48league games that were on TNT before all the matches kick off at APM it was Real Madrid chapter at the Bernabal and I'd never heard of Madrid before and he was absolutely tear and realm Madrid apart and I thought who is this guy I started going on his Wikipedia page and then lo and behold a couple of months later um we ended up I ended up covering his transfer between Arsenal and Chelsea because he became one of the biggest stories in in Europe so it's a really interesting kind of dynamic there on the left but I'm looking forward to seeing how it unfolds Ali I'm cautious timing wise that you've got to get yourself to the press us so um we're probably around about the halfway stage already unfortunately do you want to give us the benefits of our great friends Nord? 20:08but give us the kind of rundown from that everton move to the to the statement to the development yesterday which you reported that Richie Larson has been left out with Roberto Deserbys 25 man Premier League squad which ultimately really if we're we're being cynical it suggests it's the end of the road you know even as you were saying that I'm checking Richie Larson's Instagram just because you just never know he has a doubt for a journalist isn't he honestly he just has brilliant statements often it's great he does and and he hasn't had his say yet on the fact that he has been left out of the squad so I'm constantly kind of refreshing his his page just to see what he's going to say about it obviously we've got Deserbys press conference where he's going to put his side across is going to have to be too sized to this so uh can I just say Ali do you feel like that decision Richie Larson's statement is maybe formed a part in that because it's one thing to request private leader you want to leave and we've known for a while that Richie's been keen to

21:11explore his options in a little bit undecided but to go so public and make kind of strong statements is there any chance that maybe that's forced Deserbys hand do you know what I don't think so because I get the impression that he'd already been told he wasn't part of the plans and that I think he'd already been told explore your options because you're not going to be part of plans going forward we've got my moves and salanky and obviously tell complain out fronter push as well and and it's it's it's harsh in one respect because he was the top scorer last season he did his part in keeping spurs up I think it'll be four out of five years at spurs of sold the top scorer for the previous season if he does go which is man when you're looking at that crazy yeah but the other side is I mean he told me back on the tour didn't he that Deserbys that Richie's and couldn't make his mind up whether he wanted to go or stay and kept saying one thing one day one thing the next and obviously the other day then told me kind

22:12of he just keeps saying he wants to leave so it does fit a little bit undermined by the fact that he wants to leave but absolutely I can understand as a player you know you're not going to be happy if the club are trying to force you in a certain direction or sorry that's what he felt was being done and he wasn't getting as much saying it as he wanted but it was just a really weird scenario where he was saying he wanted to go to Everton spurs wanted to sell him to Everton Everton wanted to sign him yet it didn't happen because he wasn't happy with the way it was being done and you can only presume this is just speculation we can only presume it's financial base financially based that it wasn't what he wanted in that respect and the suggestion isn't there in the Turkish media that he's going to get more money which I'd be surprised if it's that much more money but you never know Premier League wages especially you know the one he would have signed as part of a 60 million pound deal back in 2022 would have been pretty decent and that's the other weird thing about him now is that suppose I've got this option to extend his contract by

23:14another year so it doesn't actually end next summer unless they want it to so you've got this scenario where they want him out the club he probably wants to get out the club but it's got to be right but if they all mess it up you've got a Danny Rose situation Danny Rose sat at spurs and the last year of his contract not playing any first team football not registered to do so and you know not to toot the horn of our own homegrown and foreign player stuff but we've been saying all window that there was going to be an issue and some mom was going to have to be left out and it kind of is engineered this situation now where it's Richard Larson over players like Odebeer and Javi who won't be available for months and I mean car uh to Zerby even himself which I'm sure is going to be picked up in this press conference today the other day came up some wild return dates for those two which we don't think are true at all we was like they were saying Javi March and Odebeer Sunday night February I sorry he said March 8th I think for Javi and Odebeer

24:14Sunday night February March or I can't remember the exact ones but it was like months like two three months ahead of what we actually expect him to be and I get the impression that Javi is going to absolutely fight tooth and nail to be back earlier than we think he's going to be back but still it means you've got all these months ahead you know it's Tottenham it's right it is Tottenham so you know there's going to be a scenario where they would have needed with Charleston it's just the way it's going to happen yeah it's just a crazy situation and on one hand I feel sorry for it on one hand I feel sorry for him because he has been a battle he has been there for spurs last season but on the other hand I did think a little bit that you know I've been there for the club when they needed me not sure he has over the previous years because he's injury record I thought that was a little bit like be aware of the bigger picture there but still yeah it's just a show it's all come to this really it is isn't it especially when a player's been in the club for a long time and I know he hasn't quite lived up to the expectation in that price tag but he's had some still

25:18pretty significant moments hasn't he he's won back the fans several times like during periods where he's been someone that has been causing frustration really in terms of his availability and also not he's never really been a prolific goal scorer apart from that purple patch he had under hand where he looked unstoppable I mean you have to say it's a good job in some respects in terms of that logistical headache that spurs aren't in European competition this season because I think there would have been a lot more tougher decisions I just wanted to ask your opinion Ali on the transfer windows a whole probably without doubt the most manic you've ever covered but it feels to me like these final two signings have almost it's a little bit of a it's not frustration but everything else was so clinical and high profile and I just feel like enjoy was that that would have been that missing piece of the puzzle that everyone would have sat up and said spurs have been

26:23absolutely unbelievable this summer in terms of what they've done I know the form hasn't been good but I just feel it's a little bit underwhelming but 10 signings all Premier League proven and they've cleared players out the door as well and got some really good loans in for youngsters I think we counted 17 players out on loan which is good for development you don't want these kids sitting around and not playing I loan latest each week I have to do honestly it took me about three hours to do it yesterday it was so many players it was incredible it was like everyone Chelsea used to have about 40 out on loan yeah it was just incredible yeah that's what I like about spurs I've said this before like there's always some kind of quotes coming out from some sporting director talking about a spurs yeah it's the like you you're never scratching around wondering I've got nothing to do today because the spurs are such a great club on that front yeah there's always some drama but you're down for those well pretty much yes that will see me off the end yeah the

27:25window it's one of those it's the old cliche but if you flipped it round and they did some of the great deals they did towards the middle or it's right at the beginning or even the Marmoussian Savio wants at the end of the window everyone's raving about the window probably yeah it's very much you know it is it is the order and and yeah I mean it was it was weird in the fact that they battled like a big team in terms of beating united to finance beating city to tonali and signing players like Savio and Marmoush for you know decent wages decent money things like that and it was almost like right at the end with with Gakapot kind of briefly until city running to exactly the same problems as spurs but also enjoy that it was almost like they got put back in the food chain order again there's a bit of air we're city we've got champions league football so kind of take take your place over there in the corner kind of thing which just yeah it just messed everything up and it would be interesting to see whether deserve even touches on that today

28:27because we spoke about it before he's got very much this thing about plan the A, B and C all being as good as each other but just different players rather than lesser players so I'm intrigued to see where he goes with that but yeah I still think the windows really is still one of the best in the history of toni moxford if not the best in terms of the profile of players they've gone for the more ready made nature of them I think the first two games of season the results are going to color the way you look at it of course is if they would have won first both the first two games or even one of them they'd won at the weekend we'd probably will be looking at the window and say oh look you can see what's happening but of course there's this narrative now around the club about how they spent so much and there's still rubbish kind of thing and it's a bit like look there are still holes in it absolutely I think right back you know I do feel for Archie Gray that is going to have to be this back up right back this season which is of no use to him whatsoever development wires and as I said right side is sent back I think might be an issue as the season goes on but elsewhere I think they've strengthened every position um maybe some people all quibble

29:33over the goalkeeper area but I still think Kinski is a young keeper's only going to get better and better Dubrovka's are very good back up as well but elsewhere there's so many options I think doing the predicted team our reporters team each week is going to be a bit of a nightmare because there are so many different ways he can attack different games and so I think you know season without European football I think it's a pretty strong squad it's going to be a squad that if they can avoid and that's again a very big if they can avoid the injuries that normally before Tottenham then most weeks they can have a very fresh big set of players if anything it's going to be quite difficult to keep some of them happy I think especially some of the younger ones so yeah I think it's it's been a really good window um I wouldn't let the last two kind of almost frantic arrivals um you know color that but yeah but also both of them could end up being key elements going forward you never know out of a bunch of transfers who ends up being the you know the one

30:34that actually is like I said earlier the sleeper hit of the whole window um and I still think the financially is going to be a superstar I think he's going to be one that we're going to kind of look back on and think like wow what a player they got him definitely I feel like uh we're both in agreement on that I feel like 85 million actually might end up looking a bit of a snip in some ways yeah um I need to ask you about the game tomorrow Ali because you're going to the city ground and it's uh yes it's one that on paper it's just never one that jumps out of you and think I'm happy to go there today because I don't think you personally in terms of attending the ground but I mean forestal ways always tough and they they've set up just like crystal palace lassies and they've bought in Daniel Moonos um I mean James McAtey at Amfield last week looked like Adam Morton they've really sat on that counter us counter attack in style so it'll be a tough tough game what what you kind of thoughts on that because if Spursley's free in a row as much as it's still

31:34very much earlier in the season the kind of pressure from the outside and in the media is going to crank up isn't it of course it's it's the kind of game I would have preferred a little bit down the line when Spurs are more jailed with these new signings you know having 10 new players it's it's gonna take some time I still think some of them should be a little bit further on than they are but that's another thing um I saw Glazner's quotes uh I think was yesterday on Derserby which don't you know they don't bow too well in terms of him saying look they've got so many kind of new players who invested massively we don't exactly know who's going to start but on the other side Derserby has a clear way he plays with his team and that makes it a little bit easier to prepare the patterns of very obvious they have certain ways we expect them to press us and that's how we prepare the team and that's going to be I'm if someone else doesn't I'm going to put that to Derserby because it's quite an interesting thing that do you remember everyone used to go on and on about Postercogler only having a plan A it's kind of he's saying a similar thing there so I'm intrigued to
