Restore Jesus Mural at Oldham Church

0:00On April 5th, Heritage folks in Oldham are pushing to restore a stunning church mural of Jesus on the cross, painted over partly by a well-meaning. Priests back in the 1980s, the piece, made by Hungarian Jewish artist George Mayer Martin in 1955 at Holy Rosary Church, just got grade 2 listing in 20s. 22. It's a rare mix of mosaic and fresco showing Jesus with Mary and St. John. Mayer Martin fled Austria nearly 20 years before World War II, and later got commissions from the Catholic Church for church art across northwest. England, like a big Pentecost scene at Liverpool's Metropolitan Cathedral, locals and experts call it a standout example of post-war British mural revival even praised by the Victoria and Albert Museum. Campaigners from Save Britain's Heritage say could draw crowds and spotlight Oldham as a cultural spot, especially since folks like a Hungarian. Director describe it as moving and sparkly.

1:00The church shut down in 2017 as the congregation shrank, then got hit by vandals. Now a new trust wants to turn the whole place into a youth cultural center. They're starting small but need at least 2 million pounds to fix the roof, repair damage, and get it open again, keeping this hidden gem alive for.
