Rescue Team Saves Three from Offshore Drift

Three people got rescued off the Corolla coast on Wednesday after their floats drifted more than a mile from shore. Strong Southwest winds pushed them way out there, turning a chill beach day into real trouble. Captain Shit Fleming from Keretuck Fire and EMS spotted the group first, and paddled out on a surfboard to make sure they weren't trying to swim back. On their own, Lifeguard Sam Cherry grabbed another surfboard to guide one person in safely, while Mike Cherry fired up a Corolla Beach rescue jet ski to bring the other two back quick. Keretuck EMS checked them all for hypothermia once on land, and turns out the water a mile offshore was 20 degrees warmer than right by the beach, which probably helped keep things from getting worse. Quick word by the team made all the difference out there.
