Rename Goat Island for Ruby Hunter

A Riverland Woman Battling Liver Cancer is pushing hard for Goat Island and Murray River National Park to be renamed after her friend, the late. Aboriginal musician Ruby Hunter, Hunter, born on the island in 1955, became a renowned performer inducted into the National Indigenous Music Hall of Fame in 2020. Campaigners have fought for this change for four years now. The island got its current name in the early 1900s from a long time resident. Back then, Aboriginal families like Hunters lived there because hospitals wouldn't allow Indigenous births. Hunter and her partner Archie Roach later fostered over 30 at-risk Aboriginal kids in the Riverland and advocated for domestic violence survivors and the stolen generations. Cheryl Norris, share of the Ruby Hunter Foundation, says her diagnosis has made this her final wish. She wants to honor Hunters' work, keeping the Riverland in the spotlight.

1:01Hunters' brothers, Uncle Wally and Uncle Jeff, face their own health struggles and hope to see it happen too. The push kicked off in early 2022, leading to a public consultation by Housing Officials in February 2025. It closed in April, but a decision is delayed by the volume of submissions with mixed views. Officials expect the report after the March State election.
