Welcome to five minute Friday everybody where we share our best tips and tricks to help you get just a little bit better every day.
This week I would like to take just a moment to remember a great man.
We know him as pop. He's virulent in Campbell and he worked for Messer Construction.
From the time he co-op to the time he retired he was a civil engineer, a project manager and many other positions above project manager as he climbed the ladder of Messer through his career and helped exert leadership in that company.
More than that pop was my grandfather, my dad's dad who handed down lineage of building but also handed down a lineage of love and family and in the wake of his loss.
I wanted to celebrate his life by talking about a few things that were really important to him and things that he passed on to me that I thought would be very appropriate for a five minute Friday.
The first one is make it a winner and if you have ever been around me, if you have been around the podcast at all you may have heard this phrase but make it a winner.
When I was a kid and I was going to school that was a phrase that pop uttered and I don't know that it was any kind of like major thing.
It was just something that I attached to and remembered and he would say make it a winner.
I know it came back up and everything but then I latched on and through the years I've used it again and again.
And here's why it mattered and here's why it meant something to me.
Pop had a great attitude about just about anything and it set him apart.
He had a great sense of humor and a great attitude and so he could put him just about anywhere and his thought on it was well this is going to be just about what I make of it.
And so pop would give him to that situation.
He would do everything in his power to try to make the situation a winner to try to make the day a winner to try to make his life a winner.
Whatever cards you've been dealt, whatever things you got in front of you no matter what's going on today, you do have a choice.
You can choose your attitude.
You may not be able to choose whether it's going to be a hard day.
You might not be able to choose whether it's a day of gain or a day of loss.
You may not be able to choose how people treat you but you can choose your response.
You can choose your attitude and this was a reminder to me through the years to choose my attitude every day and to make it a winner.
And I say this now when my kids get out of the truck in the morning, I'm dropping them off at school and I try to remember this and tell myself this every time I can.
This comes up with my brothers. This comes up with my dad.
Make it a winner has become kind of a, I don't know, bit of a monster.
It's something we go back to in life and something we touch base on.
I want to watch your face in the day.
I wonder how maybe pop and his great legacy of having an awesome attitude can impact you in a positive way today.
I'm just reminding you that no matter what you encounter today, you can choose to make it a winner.
And with that, go build something awesome.
