Regrettable majors

0:00Allison, I know you have a master's degree in what is it? Radio production nailed it. What was your college major? Uh, I, it was technically a double major in mass communications and public relations. Uh, do you regret it? Do you regret your major? Do you wish you would have gone for something else? Zero percent. Uh, really? Yeah, zero regrets. Okay, for the Tuesday tidbit today, especially because we're nearing graduation season, uh, some high school students looking to make that decision for their, uh, what they're going to major in in, uh, in college. So what are the top, uh, college major regrets? The reason most of these grads are regretting their college majors because they have a difficult time finding a job in the field that they graduated in. That's one. Okay. Also, whenever they realize the pay isn't quite as good as what they thought it would be. Yeah. Big time regret. Let me give you the top five, uh, most regretted college majors. Number five, criminal justice or law enforcement.

1:01Oh, dang, that stinks because that is such an important field to be in, uh, physical sciences. I would have think that if you get a degree in physics or chemistry or, or earth sciences, that would mean a pretty lucrative career, apparently not the case. Yeah, I think you kind of have to stay in academia if you go into one of those careers, isn't it like takes a while to make the money, um, also on the list of regretted college majors. Major disciplinary studies or general studies. What does that even mean? I think that that's probably why it's a regretted major like, oh, what'd you do when you, uh, focus in in college? Uh, just general general study, general study, basic ones, uh, communication, media studies or public relations, the second most regretted college major. I mean, I do understand if it was just kind of like, here's what happens. I went, or at least for people my age, whenever I was in college, getting this degree and

2:02my fellow peers is so many people saw it as a fallback major. They saw it as an equivalent to getting like a business degree. And it was like, I don't really know what I want to pursue, but like media, that sounds good. Communications, that sounds good. And I think you do kind of have to stick it through. It can't just be a fallback. Like, oh, anyone will see that and respect it when I, when I was a high school senior and working with radio stations. I would ask people advice on go to college. Should I do it? Should I not? And it was like split 50, 50 between people saying, don't go to college or go to college. But the overarching theory was do not major in communications, whatever you do. Because basically like I had worked in radio for a year or so at that point, they were like, you could teach the communications classes like anything that you're going to learn. You're going to learn on the job. The most regretted college major, political, political science, international relations or public policy. Oh, wow. Oh, and I can imagine like being a political science major, like when is that going to do

3:07for you? Are you going to be a politician? Well, I think that is the hope like there is a lot of, when you think about the political machine and how many people have to be involved for all of it at all levels, the campaigning, the different levels of politicians, it is a lot. And so I would think if you, I would think you would think you were being so smart if you went for a political science career. Yeah. But then most people end up regretting it.
