You found the Minnesota Wild Podcast presented by Acro sure this is John Hines coming up a full recap from this one plus a trip to the locker room in my post game comments what first from the Bob Kurtz radio center here's Kevin Falms. So to came into this game today with the third fewest regulation losses in the entire league is the Rangers clear one ahead and that is going to do it. Yeah New York has won four in a row for the first time this season they double up the wild and say Paul by a score four to the game where Captain Jarrett's Virgin reaches the 1,000 game milestone another slow start dooms the wild once they got their legs underneath them it was too late because Igor Shasturk and shut him down the rest of the way wild lose four two and fall the one one and one in the first three games of the four game homestand welcome to the post game show Kevin Falms downstairs in the Bob
Kurtz radio center upstairs in the outsaver press box time read saw the wild get doubled up by the blue shirts they may be struggling time they may be in the bottom of the eastern commerce but that Rangers team suddenly is one four in a row tonight they bit the Minnesota wild yeah I always talk about confidence and I think they've they've certainly picked that up here when you look at the fact that one four in a row they're certainly still the bottom of you know the bottom of the heap in that in their division at the same time they're playing much better this is one of those years it just didn't start well they've had a lot of injuries to keep players also this season that lends itself to be near the bottom of the standings as well but you know what that being said now a lot of these guys are playing for contracts for next year you don't know what's going to happen after the season is over here right now but the the blue shirts I think you might say they will not be in the playoffs just where they're in the standings it's just too hard to catch up if you can make up five points in a month that's something in Minnesota if you look right now Kevin we have what a month to go in the schedule yeah it's gonna be interesting to see what happens here for the next little bit from who's
gonna wind up wearing who's gonna have home ice and who's not I know it's only two games but a disturbing trend of from Thursday against Philadelphia to tonight against the New York Rangers those groggy starts I know in the end the wilder outshot nine six in that first period but I'll tell you what a lot of that for a good chunk of that period it was nine two again and that's what it was on Thursday against Philadelphia and once you get down to a New York Rangers team that has Igor Shasturken between the pipes man it's hard to climb that hill once he's got a little bit of leeway yeah you're right gold ending was gonna win I mean I've always said that when you get in a playoff competition gold telling is gonna win your team for your team or the specialty teams perhaps but at the same time Minnesota's got to find a way to have better starts and we've seen here the last couple of games hopefully that comes with a game against Toronto tomorrow night that's what's up next for the wild assuming mother nature cooperates the wild to be on home ice tomorrow to finish up the four game home stand against another team that's struggling in the eastern conference but I mean you talk about a team that's loaded I don't know why they're struggling and languishing at the bottom of
the standing time but that's another team they better not take lightly well those problems in Toronto obviously we said that in fact the fans have said that for the last couple of years and they have not done much to rectify that the problems we're having there and they lost you know they've lost with minor leaving the organization that's a huge loss for the Toronto Maple Leafs it was a big part of the success of that team over the years but all of a sudden now they've got to find a way to bring it all together and it doesn't happen overnight it's going to take a while for them to make it that way you got shovels down a Tom Reed hockey city pub do we need shovels you might want to invest in a couple over the next 24 hours from what it sounds like we have shovels don't worry but we've got services to take care of it but it won't be me doing it okay Tom well enjoy the night stay warm and keep those sidewalks clear we'll talk to you tomorrow hopefully when the wild hosts the Toronto Maple Leafs sounds good thanks Kevin Tom Reed upstairs in the outshaper press box following a 4-2 loss to the New York Rangers like I said wild have dropped two in a row they fall to one one and one on the three game homestand they get a
chance to salvage it tomorrow when they host the Maple Leafs let's pause 10 seconds for station identification you're listening to wild hockey present a by grand casino well step aside and then when we continue we'll get you inside that wild locker room and of course we'll bring you John Hines post game comments you're listening to wild hockey present a by grand casino alright well let's get you the excel energy big saves of the game and unfortunately it goes to the opposition Philip Gustafson 14 saves on 18 shots that's not great but the guy between the plates for the New York Rangers outstanding help by the fact that he was up to zero after one period of play and then built up a 4-1 lead after 40 a boy oh boy he really kept the wild at arm's length despite them putting a ton of shots on goal over the course of the final two
periods Igor Shasturkin he gets the excel energy big saves of the game I'm driving the front of the net and Tara Saco right circle a shot stop now once but twice by Shasturkin as Tara Saco got to that rebound and golfed it back to one of the game dances with its shot one that ricocheted around hard and bashed it just why you took a roll spotted in front it's a Sturkin down on his backside somehow got to use feats Matt Tukarello back to center point he was a one-timer have a white caprice off at the goal post rebound in front oh and somehow it stayed out Igor Shasturkin unbelievable throughout the course of the evening at the wild registered 21 shots on goal in the second period that's the most in a period of this season followed it up with 20 more in the third they did score two goals but Shasturkin ended up with 45 saves and the excel energy big saves of the game powered by excel energy probably powering the great state of hockey with safe clean and reliable energy explore how they're making energy work better for you and our communities at excel energy dot com the
Rangers of one for a row Shasturkin has won for a row he's 502 in his last seven and his last loss in regulation December 27th he gets the win tonight the Rangers beat the wild for two is the final in St Paul John Hines and more when we continue this is wild hockey presented by Grand Casino all right for our Grand Casino play of the game and we'll be in the first period when the Rangers scored twice to take that two zero advantage wild out shot nine six they open the second though on the power play and that boldly delivers a power play goal with his 38th of the season cuts the lead in half the wild are in business that is until in the span of 22 seconds the Rangers basically put this thing out of reach as they deliver the Grand Casino plays of the game. Rangers
here the chance in front backhander and they score it's Jaro Slav Hamilash tucking at home as he got to the loose puck just in front of gust of sin it's his second in 12 games and it's back to a two goal dealer sends one in wild backboard Hartman turned it over Fox a pie Gava Coppa Lane fired in front they scored tro check with his stick down Gava Coppa with every one with a slap pass to the slots just like that it's 4-1 to your two goals in 22 seconds basically put the game out of reach especially when Igor Shostirkin is playing so well between the pipes he had to nila your offscored 719 of the third to give the wild a glimmer of hope but they can't get any closer because Chameleve and a tro check deliver the Grand Casino plays of the game presented by Grand Casino women as it comes to play visit Grand Casino dot com to plan your next visit don't look for matches ocarillo after a win he's usually the spokesperson after a loss that's the
case today i check inside that wild locker room with my magic eye and it looks like he's ready to address the media so here's matches ocarillo in progress that's probably a night where you have more questions than answers at the end of it just with the pucks that stayed out pucks that went in what was called what wasn't called yes you know they get a par play early and get a goal get some momentum we can't really get into the game and then we i think we'd we dominate the rest of the game and can't get one through you know that's that's hockey sometimes you know it sucks to lose but you know that's that's a part of it and we forget about this and go gain tomorrow would you see on the four minute chance because i know you had a lot of looks in the part play but not really seem like that could change everything yeah for sure we try and score every time around there you know sometimes sometimes they don't want to go in and they have a good goal they they play it well and stuff like that so you gotta give them credit as well but
you know we had our chances i mean we really we have 50 shots almost so that's um i would say that uh should probably get more than two but their goal would play it well they would defend the well when they had to and that's that's just a part of it. people have to kill them so good lately how much of kind of a stunner was that early one to give them? no i mean so folk who have a chance for her before and then they did uh that's just that's just a part of it you know they get some balances on their goals um which happens again you know we we we came diggers out down you know we we played a good game overall you know maybe our first wasn't up to the standard or what we like to but that's also on them playing playing well but then the rest of the game i think we're we're we do enough to win the game but sometimes it doesn't work so that's that's just a part of it and just um stay positive you know play that way
and that way you win more than you lose i think there's some frustration in the third period there are a lot of chances you have to have how close you guys were it was just some frustration that's kind of yeah of course we we're we're down we want to score and we want to win so of course you get frustrated or but that's just that's uh that's hockey you know it's uh a little bit of scrums and some heated you know that's that's your sparrot? mattes zookarello there with the media inside that wild locker room following the four two lost to the new york rangers john hines and more when we continue this is wild hockey presented by grand casino like i said i love having seen the family and obviously sharing it with these the great guys in here um we have a special group in here and um this walking in every school day and scene faces like this every day is awesome it's a pleasant for us and we're we're lucky but um yeah um get back at tomorrow
jared spurgeon it's official one thousand games in the national hockey league who would have thung that diminutive team blue liner defenseman steps into the league back in two thousand ten makes his NHL debut in areas one thousand games later uh quite the career probably destined to have that number hanging in the rafter next to number nine at some point still a lot of gas in the tank of one jared spurgeon i like i said game number one thousand he and coivu the only wild players to wear the wild jersey for the first one thousand games of their career seventy six player in NHL history to play a one thousand games with a single franchise uh good stuff for jared spurgeon wish it would have come in a victory it does not they lose tonight two of the new york rangers four two and fall the one one and one to open up the four game home stand egor shasturken outstanding on the night 45 saves for the victory on the other end of the spectrum philip gust of sin suffers the loss suffers a rare home defeat uh gust of sin ready to address the
media let's go inside that wild locker room now yeah weird ones that stayed out weird ones that stayed in yeah no it's what was a frustrating game like we didn't play our best here in the beginning and then we took over and we're all ready down there um four goals so yeah you probably didn't even see that second one uh he's not even facing you all the second the second one you know he shoots there for a tip you know you push the right there it hits something it goes all the way back and I just uh i wasn't fast enough to get to the poster and you know even if i don't redirect it in with my skate there it still goes in so i have to try there yeah you know you you know you maybe you can cheat on it a little bit and you know the guy coming down there with the park comes straight down Broadway there and then you know you have to respect that shot and he shoots it's very wide
there and then as you said it hits one of our guys and he goes in what do you see chair get a stout in game uh well you know it's he means a lot to us you know captain he takes caros and and you know just how we how he plays for us you know he he really care about the team and and i'm very happy for for him getting a thousand games you know he was a little hurt you know was it last season he had some some struggles and you know now he's back and I think it's placed very good in front of us and it's one of our biggest D okay there you go while gold tender Philip Gustafson with the media just moments ago amongst other things talking about the captain getting his one thousandth game with the the the Minnesota wild and one thousandth game in the national hockey league Gustafson will suffer the loss and fall to twenty four eleven and six on home ice twelve two and five now in his last nineteen ad grand casino arena got an assist now it's two assists on the season five in his career
John Heinz with the media let's go to him now yeah i would say that uh i think the story of tonight's game was you know we tried to skill our way into the game and then halfway through the game you know we played the way that we can play and need to play and play to harder style a game and i think it was that was the tail of tail of the game first half first half we didn't have it second half uh we had it but it was too late and uh yes i would say that um i think it's on me uh we know we've had some routines with our team that we felt has been working but obviously the last two games uh i think i'm going to look in the mirror i think the team needs to look in the mirror a little bit of of maybe we're going to switch some routines uh of what it is because it's certainly not good enough what can be made if you can elaborate just as far as practices or skates option like what would you say perhaps the skates optional skates uh meetings mind sets you know i think it's in tandem you know we I felt like we were uh we have a good chemistry with you know with how we go about our business and
do things but when when i look at how we start the last two games then um i think you have to look internally and say okay you know this was a routine that was working and was good and we started games on time but now it's different so obviously you know you go through different segments of the season and where your team is at and um obviously the the preparation that we're getting the guys therefore and obviously their preparation as individual players isn't where it needs to be particularly the last two games. Rockets said it got a little too cute in that first and you kind of alluded to that where does that mindset come from or why has that changed as of late against these two points where maybe you are trying to be too cute and too fancy with some of it to start yeah you know i think that's that's uh something i addressed after last game you know with you all and obviously uh with the team and obviously that that wasn't the right recipe right so um i think when you see repetitive thing i think it went things are a one-off with our group um you know you you you feel like ones one off but it's not a one-off so obviously we felt like there was a there
was an approach to take with the group and the players uh obviously that wasn't efficient enough to get us to where we needed to be so we'll continue to make adjustments until we find the right solution. Is this all just to join a response to the last two games or did you does it go deeper than that like no like i said when we came off that you know that five out of six points against the teams i i would say that you know since we've come back and i would say particularly these two these two games i think we all know we we discussed the philly game uh and then tonight i felt you know the start of the game and the first half of the game was uh not much different than the philly game but i will say that you know we did catch it and we did gather it um halfway through the game but that's not that's not going to be a winning recipe. Is there any cells in that the way that you guys did respond kind of toward that second and that there where you took control found some diamonds but she started and kind of did what he does to get the book out of the night. Yeah i you know i think that it's i think you have to be objective about certain things i mean i credit the guys you know we did we did catch it and stop it and and we did give ourselves a chance
but then we ran into a world-class goalie and i think that's you know um part of what it is so i i do like the fact that we had some dig in and we had some pushback and we got to the game that we needed to get to and i think you see the difference in the game um but now i think the challenges why is that not happening to start the game and that's when i addressed i think you know some of the routines or whatever whatever our thing we felt like we had a good thing going that's not what it needs to be right now or dincey john that you're speaking about like because it is just two games so does that just speak to this team's potential the expectations like maybe in another situation for another team two games wouldn't bother anybody but that it does here that speaks to something greater going on here right well i think it just comes down to standards right i think that we're all we're all competitive and you want to be able to maximize you know your team and the group and the guys maximize their abilities as well and um you know when when you when you get
away from your identity and and what gives you a chance to win and the willingness to do that from the drop of the puck then you know that's not okay it doesn't matter um to us it's the like the process of what you do is really important i mean i've stood up in front of you guys numerous times and you know we've lost games and i was really proud of the team and and and we played well and that's hockey you know but i think when you're when you're when you're not doing the things you need to do and you're losing games then then that's the reality right so so we got to we got to make some changes you don't get to where you're standing without being able to self-correct the player being able to do that like how much you need to loss is that we need to get their attention like the results of that and get their attention well i i certainly think it does i mean these guys are i mean this group's a competitive group and they care you know they want to win i think we we've gone through ups and downs in the season and you're going to go through the course of 82 games you know it's it you're going to go through those things and as i said in the game i give the players a lot of credit um the of the pushback the second half of the game no quit didn't give in you know
we we did try to give ourselves a chance to win the game um so i certainly like that that's a positive out of the game uh but i think that you know right now as i said it's not it's not a complete 60 minutes that's going to give us the chance to win doesn't this the best league in the world and if you're not going to play you know the way you need to play you you like i said you leave yourself vulnerable to lose games and i felt like that's probably the most disappointing thing out of these two games was um it wasn't like we played great and lost and we lost the hockey game there's there's a mindset um that we haven't had for 60 minutes any update on brink and his potential ability for tomorrow uh he's i would classify him as day-to-day i think it's one of the things where he gets up you know in the morning and gets treatment or feels how he's going to do it so i think it's imminent i don't know if it's tomorrow or not how's he guys going to do different streets of course of the season what do you see with joe handson's game i think is one goal last twenty-five one game what do you see with his overall process and what he's doing i mean i think
joe joe's uh he said i think he's an effective player you know i think as we've talked about with numerous guys guys go ups and downs with with points and not points i think he's a great skater he's a two-way player you know he's responsible uh he's competitive you know sometimes i think you know there's more ways to try to help teams win games and sometimes it is points and sometimes it's in your overall play i think that you know joe joe's you know playing some pretty good hockey for us and um you know he's always an effective guy so i don't necessarily have any issues with him there you go the head coach of the Minnesota wild john hines with the media following the four two lost two the new york rangers slow start but calls it uh and the slow start and then they found themselves and then they run into that world-class goalie you can't start slow against any team in the national hockey league he called that quote not a winning recipe and then you run into a world-class goalie once you finally get your game figured out and then you can't put anything past shesterkin ended up putting 40 some shots on goal shesterkin up to the challenge while do get
will to pass them but that was about all they could muster on this night they ended up losing they've dropped two in a row and they fall the one one and one to open up the four game home stand it concludes tomorrow assuming mother nature cooperates the wild bo host the Toronto Maple Leafs full preview after this you're listening to wild hockey presented by grand casino just wasn't a good clean start it was too cute wasn't hard enough and then you know when we turn it on when we turn it on the team can't even touch the pocket against us but that's just it's too little too late they have guys that want to win it's their job to win they got a lot of good players over there so just it's too little too late and that's two stinkers at home in a row which obviously is tough to swallow but we're getting bounced back from it we're gonna learn from it's
it's not always smooth sailing so well said Brock Faber to the media just moments to go following the 4-2 loss to the New York Rangers wild of drop two in a row they fall the one one and one on the home stand the most disturbing part are those past two games like you talked about the slow start against the flyers end up losing to them and then you drop one to the Rangers two of the bottom five teams at least by their record and statistically in the Eastern Conference wild lose tonight despite goals by Matt Boldy and Danila Yurov they fall and the move to 38 17 and 12 those 88 points still for back of the Dallas stars who are in action by the way and they lead to zero should they get the victory they'll pull within four of the first place Colorado avalanche nothing said in stone now all of a sudden between the wild and stars meeting up in the first round of the playoffs it could be the wild in the avalanche who knows there's a lot to accomplish in the final 15 games of the regular season hopefully the wild can get back on track tomorrow night when they face off against the Toronto Maple Leafs by the way Matt Boldy a three game goal streak he's tied now with
Caprice out for the lead in a goal scored for the Minnesota wild at 38 each Quinn Hughes another assist he's got 44 points and 35 games of the wild riding a seven game assist streak he's got points in 27 of the 35 games he played with Minnesota Danila Yurov back on the board two goals in the last three games 11th wild rookie to put up double digits in his maiden voyage in the national he's up to 10 goals on the season but in the end the wild lose and they fall to the New York Rangers that's your game recap up next for the wild like we said they'll host the Toronto Maple Leafs assuming that the snow cooperates and we can get the game underway and they can get in town from Buffalo the Leafs stopped an eight game losing streak with a win against Anaheim on Thursday wild double up the Leafs six three in Toronto on January 19th and have won three straight in the all-time series pregame at 615 tomorrow night puck is scheduled to drop at 637 and that'll come on most of these same stations it'll be in front of a national television audience on TNTV you know
