Randy Bennett Takes Helm at ASU

0:00On March 24th, Arizona State University just named Randy Bennett as their new head basketball coach. The 63-year-old Arizona native comes over from St. Mary's on a 5-year deal, announced Monday afternoon. He steps in after Bobby Hurley's contract expired following an 11-year run. Bennett built St. Mary's into a consistent winner over more than two decades there. His team's grabbed seven West Coast Conference regular season titles, made 12 NCAA tournament trips and won at least 20 games nearly every year since 2007. Sun Devil fans hold Bennett can turn things around after some tough stretches. Hurley squad missed the NCAA field the last three years and finished just 17 wins against 16 losses this season. Earlier highs, like a number three national ranking, never led to deep tournament runs. St. Mary's move fast to feel their spot, promoting assistant Mickey McConnell, who played their under Bennett and joined the staff in 20. 19. The Gales bowed out early this year, but stay a mid-major force.
