Raiders Release Geno Smith, Plan QB Overhaul

They plan to release him on Wednesday when the new league year begins, which frees up $8 million in salary cap space. This comes as no surprise, given the team struggles last year. Smith came to the Raiders in a tray from the Seattle Seahawks last March, where they sent over a third round draft pick. He joined head coach Pete Carroll, who had coached him successfully before. But things fell apart quickly in Las Vegas. The team finished with just three wins and 14 losses, leading to Carroll's firing right after the season ended. Smith struggled badly, throwing 19 interceptions compared to only 17 touchdowns over the year. At 35 years old, Smith had signed a three-year deal worth $66.5 million, guaranteed, with plans to start through the 20-26 season.
