Raiders Release Geno Smith, Free Agent QB

NFL Insider Ian Rappaport reported the news Friday morning. The team might try to trade him first, but if not, Smith will hit free agency looking for his third NFL home in three years. Last off season, Smith left the Seattle Seahawks after three solid seasons there. He had turned down their extension offer and requested a trade. The Raiders brought him in on a two-year deal, worth up to $88,500,000, including $66,500, $1,000 guaranteed. He also reunited with his old coach, Pete Carroll. Smith's time in Vegas did not go well. He threw 19 touchdown passes, but led the league with 17 interceptions. The Raiders won their opener against New England, but dropped 13 of his next 14 starts, including nine in a row to finish the season. His story echoes Russell Wilson's path.
