Prosecutor Drops Charges in Teacher's Death

A Georgia prosecutor has dropped felony charges against an 18-year-old high school student accused of driving the truck they killed a beloved. Teacher during a prank. Jason Hughes, a 40-year-old math teacher and coach at North Hall High School, died on March 6 after the accident in Gainesville. The incident happened during a competitive game that's been a long-standing tradition among students. As one teen drove off in a pickup truck, Hughes tripped into the road and was struck. Four other teens faced misdemeanor charges. Hughes' family publicly asked officials to drop all charges against the five students. They described it as a terrible tragedy and said punishing the kids would go against Hughes' lifelong work, mentoring young people like them. The teen driver's lawyer announced Friday that the vehicular homicide charge was dismissed, noting it didn't fit since there was no unsafe driving. The group stopped right away to help until paramedics arrived.
