Profile Of Evil: The Gary Michael Hilton Confession Transcript (Part 4)

About this episode

Gary Michael Hilton is an American serial killer and handyman who gained notoriety for his crimes in the early 2000s. He was convicted of several murders, most notably the 2007 slaying of Cheryl Dunlap, a nurse and Sunday school teacher in Florida. Hilton's modus operandi often involved targeting hikers and outdoors enthusiasts in remote areas, leading to his nickname "The National Forest Serial Killer." He was known for his brutality and lack of remorse. Hilton is currently serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

Gary Michael Hilton's criminal activities became more widely known after his arrest in 2007 for the murder of Cheryl Dunlap, but evidence suggests he may have been involved in other killings prior to that. Born in 1946, Hilton had a troubled past and a history of run-ins with the law, including charges for theft and assault.

His most notorious crime occurred in December 2007 when he abducted Cheryl Dunlap, a registered nurse and Sunday school teacher, from a hiking trail in Florida's Apalachicola National Forest. Dunlap's body was found decapitated over a month later. The brutality of the crime shocked the community and drew widespread media attention.

During the investigation into Dunlap's murder, authorities discovered that Hilton had been living a transient lifestyle, often camping in national forests and preying on unsuspecting hikers and campers. This revelation led to speculation that he may have been responsible for other unsolved disappearances and murders in similar areas across several states.

In 2008, Hilton was also linked to the murders of John and Irene Bryant, an elderly couple who disappeared while hiking in North Carolina's Pisgah National Forest. Their bodies were later found, and Hilton was convicted of their murders as well.

Hilton's methods were often brutal and opportunistic. He would target individuals who were alone in remote areas, using his knowledge of the wilderness to evade capture. After his arrest, Hilton showed little remorse for his crimes and was ultimately sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole as well as getting the death penalty for his crimes in Florida.

And welcome back to the program. In this episode, we're gonna pick up where we left off with the confession of Gary Michael Hilton. CB, okay, so when you left the bank in Gainesville, which way did you go? Back to DeLonaga. Now it's too late and I've had it. I'm like, with the MS, some days I can't get out of bed. And some days I'm good for a few hours. When I get to this point, I can't even remember anything. CB, which direction did you go to DeLonaga?

Hilton, highway 60. Yeah, highway 60 and 400. CB, okay, Hilton. Yeah, highway 60 to the head of 400. CB, then what did you do when you got up there? Hilton, oh no, that's when I went. Yeah, highway 60 to 400. Then 60 goes right on in to DeLonaga. CB, where did you stay in DeLonaga? Hilton, then I attempted to go north, 129 again, but we were now having snow coming at the higher elevations. As I got to the higher elevations, I was gonna find a place to camp, but I was shot by then. I couldn't think straight. CB, okay, so you actually came 60 up to DeLonaga and then you cut back across to 129. Hilton, no, 129 goes into DeLonaga. CB, no, Hilton, it's a bypass around DeLonaga. CB, are you thinking about to that he gets cut off by Hilton? 129 goes over Neil's gap. Am I not right?

Am I correct? Hilton, we came 129. CB, okay, 129. Hilton, and actually for some reason, and I'm not sure why I went into downtown DeLonaga and I didn't go to the bypass. You know, I went to just got on it, perhaps, and I'm not mentally functioning by then. As I am now, I start, I'm starting to flag out right now. So I started and he's kind of sputtering here a bit and CB interrupts. I may be totally lost, but I was thinking 129 ran from Gainesville to Blair'sville. Hilton, it does. CB, okay, and where at what part of the 129? Hilton, I just couldn't CB interrupts. It goes around DeLonaga, where? Hilton, no, no. TD, is that 60? Hilton, yeah, we're talking about 60 probably. TD, yeah, but 129 is, gets cut off again by Hilton into town, yeah. TD, right? Hilton? Yeah, it's not 129, at that point.

It comes into it at Turner's corner is where it comes, you're right, you're right. CB, that's the way, that's the way we basically just came. Hilton, yeah, some way or other, I ended up going through DeLonaga, I'm not sure why. CB, okay, Hilton, I couldn't even remember straight. CB, right? Hilton, yeah, and I started North to with the object of getting to a campsite somewhere and the snow was coming in at higher elevations and it was accumulating rapidly. And there was probably two inches on the ground on the road very quickly and I was losing traction and control and then I came around a curve and a car had sort of slid off the road and there was a sheriff's deputy there with its blue lights and I was struggling uphill and I knew it was just gonna get worse in a higher elevation and I knew that the sheriff's deputy was engaged with that car but I knew that more than likely he was road, gonna road block that road until everyone headed up the hill not to go. CB, right? Hilton, to advise them not to go.

So I knew that if I didn't turn around that he was gonna come after or have someone come and get me and say hey you're nuts don't go up there and he was right. I wouldn't have attempted it. I was losing traction and sliding. Now we had about two inches of ice and snow. So it was not so much going uphill that you may just lose traction and not be able to continue but going downhill you put on your brakes and just keep sliding and you wreck out. Hilton uphill you just continue to no further downhill you'll wreck. Hilton with that kind of stuff on CB, okay? And where did you wind up? Hilton, so the sheriff's car was there and I knew if I didn't turn around there or where he could see me that he was gonna come get me or send someone after me. They passed an intersection and Hilton continues. Now this is the intersection we came through. Yeah, out of Gainesville we came through that way to Delanaga CB, right? Hilton, I'm not sure exactly what the hell I had in mind at this point. I was looking for a campsite. So I turned around as soon as I passed the sheriff's car

I just turned around and turned out, you know, pulled off the road and glad I got traction. It was in someone's front yard but you couldn't tell that at first because it was just a snow pit. But it sure someone or turned into someone's front yard and I turned around and went back down just right past the sheriff's deputy CB, okay? Hilton, she saw the blue lights and everything but she was only loosely secured as far as we went downhill, went down the highway 52, Delanaga, highway 52 West and went to a forest service road. Nimble will church creek road. It's about probably six, seven miles west of Delanaga. I could point it out on a map and went up there, went 10 miles up there because it's five miles through private property. So I went 10 miles up that and there's a campsite, a number of campsites on that road. Camping is only allowed in designated sites. CB, okay, so you camp there for the night? Hilton camp there. I gave her the best bag, the best.

I gave her the mattress that didn't leak. I got a plus five degree bag. I had unintelligible degree, but you know each dog got a bag, each dog got a 20 degree bag. CB, where did you camp in the van or outside? Hilton, yeah, I just, she helped me offload the van. I just unchained, she was free. She was only only secured while we were moving. She was not tied up. And while we were asleep, I would tie a long length of nylon cord around her ankles, quadruple knotted and then quadruple knotted at an anchor point in the van. But other than that, it would be five feet long. That was simply to keep her from jumping up and taking off while I was asleep. Hilton, so she was only secured when we were in motion and sometimes not even then. CB, okay, when you got out and said that you had a nylon to this Hilton cuts them off, she only know, no, that's just when I went to sleep. CB, okay, Hilton, I'd say honey, I'm just gonna have to tie you loosely,

just not to, not to restrain her, but to keep her from readily jumping up and running off. In other words, just take a hundred pound test nylon line and put it around one length or one thickness around her ankle and then put about just, you know, and then just put it about five or six, seven, eight square knots in it and not a tight, not her, tight on her, so in other words, to get it loose, you have to work at it a while. It was just so she could, it would wake me up if she was trying to leave. Craving the coffee flavor you love, but without the caffeine, kachavas got you covered with their newest coffee flavor. CB, and you have the other end tied where? Hilton to a seed bell anchor. CB, okay. Hilton, that's all she wasn't going down or anything. CB, okay. Hilton, so each dog had a 20 degree bag. Hilton, she got a 15 or she got a five degree bag and I got a 15 degree bag. And I gave her the air mattress that doesn't leak and I took the one that does leak. And to keep warm and also I ran the van, it was pretty cold. It was pretty cold that night. It might have been 15 outside, but she helped me unload the van. I inquired about food. Neither one of us had ate anything. We fed the dogs and so forth.

And then she still convinced me that the thing was going to work talking about the ATM card. Hilton, so I determined the next day that I would go to Canton. And one reason I headed in that direction is that I had a person I knew that I thought, you know, plan B would be to try to get some money from her and that she was in that direction. I don't have any money. I don't have anything. I have $40 on me and as soon as I had gotten her in the van shortly after I abducted her, I stopped to get gas. CB, right? Hilton at the gas station on 129 North of Blood Mountain on the first one, that was no, I stopped at Bogger Hollow gas station on the right. But it was no good. That was, you know, someone pulls up at the other island. Uh huh. All she has to do is yell out and they would be aware of it. So I didn't like the situation. So I continued on to the next gas station on the left or west side of 129 going towards Blair'sville. And I spent $30 on my last $40 in gas.

So I had no gas, no money. But anyway, that's one reason I had it to Canton so I could get on to Carter'sville if necessary and try to get some money. CB, who is this person that you are going to get money from? Hilton, the person I was calling from the gas station where in a coming where the clothes were found and that's the call I was making. She refused me. CB, what's her name? Hilton, Sean Stewart, I believe you are probably standing there as I called. CB, did you make contact with her from Canton? Hilton, not Canton. No, not Canton. I didn't call her until CB you didn't attempt until coming. Right, until several hours before I was arrested because I didn't attempt it until I stopped at the gas station. Let her dog out there. I knew the dog would be okay. It was four several reasons. CB, okay, after you got to Canton, what did you do? Hilton, well, we got up the next morning and I determined I'd go to Canton because again, I had limited range. CB, right? So I determined I'd go to Canton to try the card again.

Hilton, she's making a believer out of me. CB, aha, Hilton, yeah, but she knew I knew but hey, what else are you gonna do? CB, right? Hilton, I knew she was lying. I knew she had been lying. I knew she wasn't giving me the straight story. Hilton, so the next day I determined that I would go to Canton, try it again. CB, okay, Hilton, and then planned to go to go on perhaps to Carter'sville and try to get some money from Sean. CB, okay, Hilton, Sean and I are not close friends. We've known, I've known her for 25 years but we're currently estranged, known her whole life, but he trails off CB. Well, let me ask you this. One thing I'm gonna start picking up the pace a little bit because we're gonna be here shortly and he's gonna want to talk, but what bank did you go to? Hilton, I can't remember the name of it, but it's on Marietta highway south of Canton. Regions bank, CB asks. Hilton, yeah, I think it's Regions bank. It's near the Moose facility and I parked around

on the Moose Lodge road. Something like that anyway, CB, right? Hilton, we sat over there at Regions bank. She sent me to that one twice or three times. CB and you couldn't get money there, Hilton, right? CB and what happened then? Hilton went to Dawson Forest where we were going now, but north on Shul Creek Road, just north of Shul Creek. In other words, several miles up the road from where we are up Shul Creek from where we're going now. CB, okay, Hilton and camp there. And you know, I think we spent two nights there because I'm pretty sure we stayed two nights there because we went hiking the next day. We went hiking, yeah, we went hiking. We spent two days, two nights there and we're at 11 degrees outside, air temperature there. So I had stoves going. I had, you know, stove used as a heater, CB, uh-huh. And I had the van going from time to time to keep warm and we spent two nights there because we went hiking one day, the next day, we took both dogs and went hiking along Shul Creek.
