On April 17th, a 31-year-old prisoner named Jamie Smith just got hit with two live sentences for attacking prison officers during a hospital trip. This went down on January 9th, 2025, when he was taken from HMP Loudam Grange to Queen's Medical Center and nodding him for a hand. Injury check. He snapped, pulling an improvised blade from a toothbrush and slashing two officers before they restrained him. After this week at Nottingham Crown Court, the judge laid down a minimum of 12 years before parole on top of his existing time. Smith had already been locked up since he was 13 from murdering a man back in November, 2007 in Birkenhead, after bolting from a care home. That crime got him 13 years minimum in secure housing. The officers took some real hits. One got slashed behind the ear, the other head butted, bitten, and cut on the neck. Several security jumped in to help control the chaos, and Smith ended up charged quick. He pleaded guilty to wounding with intent, attempted wounding, having an offensive weapon
in public, and trying to escape custody. Detectives called him extremely violent, and praised the officers for staying pro through it all. These attacks on staff doing their jobs show how tough prison work stays, even outside the walls, and this sentencing sends a clear message on zero. A tolerance for that kind of rage.
