Prison Worker Pleads Guilty in Inmate Assault Cover-Up

One of four prison workers at the Federal Complex and Buttoner has pleaded guilty in a case involving an inmate assault and a cover-up attempt. Darryl Antron Campbell, a former lieutenant there, entered the plea on Monday before a federal judge in Raleigh. He faces up to five years in prison for obstructing the investigation. This all happened back in 2024, on Campbell's very first day after his promotion. The next day, he joined three colleagues, lieutenant's Brandon Marquis Hayes and Brandon Perez-Jones, plus technician Brandon Germain Evans to move the unnamed inmate to a camera-free office. The inmate resisted orders to undress, leading to a struggle where he was thrown against a wall. His clothes got ripped and he ended up with bruises and other injuries on his body. To hide what happened, Evans pushed another staffer to alter a report. Hayes lied to bosses about a supposed threat from the inmate and tried to isolate him in special housing.

1:00Campbell pushed for the same move. The four men got indicted and arrested last September. Campbell is the first to plead as part of a deal with prosecutors, with sentencing set for June.
