We will open up the floor for questions for Rebecca Bucco. We're here to write down for Mary, the VBNS. Just the feeling you guys have to go and get another crack in these guys. Yeah, we're super excited. I think that, you know, I played in the Rose Bowl in my freshman year. It's an amazing venue. It's so beautiful. They do a great job. Helstered for the players and coaches and families. So it really doesn't get much better than this. I'm having a chance to, you know, redeem ourselves from what happened earlier in the season. It's something we don't take lightly. So we're very thankful. Austin Ward, the podcast. Mike, what if I told you that Jeremy is the person who came to the freshman year of national? I did hear that. Yeah, that's a little, I don't even know who won it. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. We know what we got here on our side. We're not too worried about, you know, awards and stuff like that. So I know JJ, the type of kid he is. That's only going to motivate him more. So it's fuel to the fire, which I think is good for us heading into this week. What was the first moment that you saw him at the Pellas?
This could be something. I would say probably just his mindset, not even obviously he's a freak when it comes to, you know, his body and stuff like that. Just his physical nature, but I think just his mindset the way he approached the weight room, it didn't really seem like a way of freshman would. And he was our only freshman ever to receive, you know, an ironbuck eye reward, which, you know, is something I was pushing towards my entire time being here. But, you know, it takes another level of doing to be able to receive that reward, especially as a freshman. So, you know, that's kind of what I knew. Steve, it means green and black. More on that. When you and Mara first got here, Garrett and Chris were adamant about the way that you guys, even this freshman, were pushing two guys who were about to be first round draft picks. And then Mara kind of said the same thing about Carnail and Brandon last year. How did JJ push you guys when he first got here as the young guy? And now you guys are the older guys. Yeah, I would say it's very similar. It's kind of the same exact thing. And, you know, I don't know what it is about the culture and its own taste, but we keep bringing in these type of people year in and year out.
That's what makes our room so great. But I think that something that JJ was able to push me in was just, you know, he was able to push me in my leadership. I needed to grow in that aspect, but he also was able to challenge me when it came to the weight room and on the field. Because we were always paired together when it came to summer and when our workouts were always lifting together. You know, I get a couple of wins. He get a couple of wins. So, I was really that next level step of competitiveness that I needed and that edge that I needed. That Murphy 2474. You guys came into the Tennessee game with a lot of outside motivation with Michigan loss and kind of the three weeks of talk. I know obviously there's still that motivation to go on and win a national championship, but how do you keep that kind of edge for a better term mentally after some of that stuff has kind of gone away and probably the big win? I would say kind of if you lose your edge, I wouldn't really call you a true competitor. I think that, you know, the way with the college football playoffs is structured.
The intensity cranks every single week. If you're not more intense than you were the last week, then something's wrong with you. I think that, you know, Tennessee was a great win, great for our momentum, but we have our full focus on Oregon. Not worrying about anything in the past, nothing in the future, our full focus is towards this game. And then, you know, we win this one, we go on to the next one, our full focus is going to be on that one. So, it's just, you keep moving down a ladder like this. Step on Crackstake, please let me know. Mecha, there's been a lot of change in college football in the playoffs, and things of that nature. But, you know, the way in some of you and some of your teammates and coaches talk about the Rose Bowl, seems like that's one game that's really, you know, maintained a lot of that tradition. You play the net, you know, what it's about. Could you explain it to, you know, also, you would never have a chance to play the why the Rose Bowl has maintained, you know, that level of respectful players and coaches? Yeah, I think, I don't know, there's just something about it, something in the air down there in Pasadena. It's just a beautiful venue, especially at the time of the year. Like you said, the tradition is hell of a year and a year out. And it's kind of the game you dream of playing in when you're a little kid, you know, playing back yard football with your friends.
The Rose Bowl is always one that tends to come up, so just having a chance of playing it is definitely very surreal. And this is going to be my second time, so I'm going to do my best to take it all in while also being fully focused on Oregon. Dan, hold on, let me worry. Matthew Will, study still has 90 minutes about that first game in Oregon. Just what kind of drive you've seen in this week wanting to get back at this one? Yeah, Will is a, he's a laser focused person. He goes about his business. He's very loose and he's very calm and he's able to rally the team, but you can see it in his eyes that this game means everything to him. So every single practice, every single huddle, making sure we're sharp, making sure we have a better practice than we had last. Then yesterday, a better practice in Oregon is having. His full focus is on being this team. And, you know, obviously it's hard not to think about the stuff of the past, but I know he's laser focused on what we got coming up. Tony Gervin, Buck I have. Matthew, when were your kids playing back yard games about to gain what team were you playing for?
Honestly, I wasn't, I was never really a. A buck I fan until, you know, I really committed here and I saw what it was all about. I was actually an Oregon fan growing up, especially on the Pacific Northwest. You know, my grandpa went to UW and stuff like that. So I like the Huskies too, but there was a legendary football player named Foto Liatto from my high school and he went to Oregon. And a couple of y'all probably know that story. So I'm a couple of years back, but he tragically died in the car accident. And, you know, he was, he was someone I looked up to in high school. You know, I was relatively close with him even though he was a bit older than me in age, but I'm just seeing what he did at my high school and then going on to play big time football out Oregon. That was a school that I really dreamed of going to. Did they build a bit like on the back? I think that's another Jeremiah question, but I guess that's it. Is there one moment, one play, one something that made you visco? Oh man, I've never seen it before. That's just incredible. Yeah, I would say it's happened multiple times. There's not really one.
I can pinpoint, but the more he does it, the more I tend to react less. So I would say probably my earliest memories of it were in spring ball. I'm kind of getting the first glimpse of him when he's making all these ridiculous catches and he still does it time and time again even now, but it's just more common now for me. The land that I wanted to take from the north. But you had, I think, those 12 touches in the first game against Oregon Thunder Substances, two carries. Is there something about this matchup that favors you? And now that you have, where that productive, the first time you played this team, what kind of attention? I guess maybe different defenses are you expecting to see? Yeah, I mean, we're not entirely sure what their gameplay is going to be, but we're paired for everything. You know, I'm not going to get too much into schemas like that, but we know that if the ball comes our way, we've got to make those plays. So whether I have 10 receptions again coming up this game where I have zero or one, we're just looking to get this win on the road, because it's really a road game for us, you know, flying across two times on. I think that, you know, it's going to be a great matchup, whether they tend to focus on me more or not.
It doesn't really matter to me because I know our team has a great playing regardless. That time for a couple more questions, Spencer, over a letterman, you guys ever surprised when the game ended? You look at it, it's actually a car, I don't know, I think the water's too big. You can kind of feel it throughout the game, I would say. You know, he's a true competitor. He wants to get involved, but at the same time he's super selfless. He's really humble, so he's going to do whatever it takes for the team to get a win. But it's the competitor nature and then that wants to contribute as much as he can. So, you know, I try to be in his ear to tell him to be level head and stuff like that, not that I need to. He's a very level head and selfless guy like I'm saying. But, you know, sometimes that's just how the game goes. I had a game this year where I only had one catch, but we ended up winning by lot. So, I think that, you know, it's hard or it's easy to be focused on the personal attributes that you could have game in and game out. But no one's really going to remember those if we're holding up the trophy at the end of the year. He could be a number one, like 95% of golf ball off the ground. He's like number three.
You see his work as a goal of those things that he goes in there and makes a play. You guys ever come behind him like, yeah, this guy could have a little bit of a number one on the low scotch. I would disagree with you. I think that he is a number one. I think that we don't have a number three receiver. I think we have three number one receivers out there. So, whatever the defense, you know, if they want to put their attention on one guy or a couple of us, they're not really doing themselves any favor because we're going to have a favor who will match up on the other side of the ball. So, that's never how we view ourselves. We know we're alpha dogs out there every single one of us knows we have the capabilities to be a number one receiver and we are number one receivers. And final question. Steve, how long has it been 24 hours? Yeah, McAteen to that game, he made one of the clutch plays that passed down the sideline. At any time, when you make that play, you think, did you ever, your mind, that we're going to win this game after we're now close to field goal range? I mean, did that play in your mind say, my goodness, we've got a chance to get out of here with the win? Yeah, I definitely knew where I caught the ball and I knew we were, you know, closer being in field goal range.
So, you know, there was a sense of, you know, I knew I knew it was a big play that I made. But in those moments, you have to finish out the game no matter what, you can't get a big head, you can't get complacent, you have to finish the game until the clock hits zero. So, that's something we've been working on, you know, we work on two minute every single Wednesday practice. So, today we'll work on our two minute and we don't even call it two minute. We call it clutch because in those times, in those games, in those big moments, someone has to make a clutch play. So, we're focusing on that every single game, knowing that we're going to have to make one of those plays coming down the stretch here. What would it mean if you're able to finish this one off and get to the final four of this playoff? Just what, in your mind, would this be, you know, just the ultimate, I suppose, a team that's already beaten earlier this year? No, I think the ultimate would be winning the national championship. So, you know, we're focused on, this just happens to be the next team in the way. We're not focused on, when we played them earlier this year, whether they got the win over us, they're just a nameless faceless opponent.
So, we're going out there fully prepared, not worried about what's happening in the past. You know, we played them before, we felt them out, so it's all about who got better from that point in time until now. A massive thank you for your time. Thank you. I really plan as much, so I just wanted to get, like, more experience under my belt. So, I can bring younger guys with me because I've been going right through it. One of those younger guys, we're seeing it out here. It's the first time I've scored all of those last years. What have you seen from Will? I've just kind of got a question, we all forgot about it because he was hurt. Now, he's running, you know, almost a second man out behind you and Ty. What have you seen from that? Well, it was a workhorse. He goes, stay quiet, you go and work hard, and that's what I love about it. He focuses, he don't really talk much. He's going to get the job done, do a job right. He rarely has any mistakes. So, what would be a successful season? A national championship? A ring? A win? All the games we don't want to lose anything. We got a mindset that we can't be beat, and we just got to go show it. That mindset, different.
It seems like you guys expect a national championship every year, this year, even more so. You guys have all come back for this. You guys have all decided, like, an offensive effort. Does that keep feeling different? Or is there not really any difference? It's just the same work. It's definitely a difference. Everyone working harder, we noticed our last run. Most of us don't have any years after this, so we got to go bigger, go home. We're not trying to go home. Finish big. We know what you guys think of Michigan, but when you look at what they did, they won the national championship. And you guys took them down to the final minute, right? You know what I mean? I mean, you were right there. Something goes a little different. You guys could have won that game against them. Does that tell you anything about, like, that, hey, you guys want to win a national championship? But you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the national championship last year, like you're that close? So I'm saying, we just like work harder. That's kind of a coach makes a saying, you know, nobody cares, just work harder. Like those, you know, won't play Georgia. It's the same thing.
Last play, you know, they went on the win in 90s. So we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season. I think we'll be fine. How frustrating is that? You're that close against the last two national titles. Of course, you know, it's frustrating, but you can't change the outcome. You can't really dwell on it. You just got to, you know, come back and work harder. Do things better than you did last year and hopefully the outcome will change. Is that as you get older, you kind of learn. I thought I was working harder than you always find out there's a little more than you could have been doing? Yeah, definitely. I mean, that's how that's what growing up is basically in college. I thought freshman year I was working as hard as I could, but now I look back at it. I really wasn't working hard at all, compared to what I'm doing now. So just to learn anything. What do you need it to be to be your best? It is at 75. 80, 85. I mean, I can, it's all on me. I think it's a little higher. I was just trying to be funny, but I mean, it's all on me.
I just got to run harder in shape. It's been a thing. The idea of potentially 16 or 17 years. I think I definitely can last. I was just, you know, we got to get the young guys to come along with us. We can't play 50 snaps again. That's just too much on our bodies. Just everybody. It's like, online, online. We got to get those younger guys to play, you know, get that pieces on the D-line and online. And everywhere else. So we can last that long. Speaking of top like, I think we can do that. I think we can do that. I think we can do that. I think we can do that. I think we can do that. I think we can do that. I think we can do that. I think we can do that. I think we can do that. I think we can do that. I think we can do that. I think we can do that. We then do that. I think we're going to get that. I think we can do that. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know if any of us, we're really expected to do that Next up. I think we're like winning by like, a lot. I thought, like, there are no mommies, you know, I can go sit down. There's something, but we're playing them big games, like, you know,
Notre Dame T1, those kinds of games. Of course, I want to be. Because I know I can contribute. I guess he got the key. You guys look second. Oh, yeah, definitely. K-Mac is a K-Mac's animal. Y'all, you haven't really seen it yet, but in practice, he shows all the time. He's just, he's growing right now. He has to work, I think. He just has to get, you know, in the playbook, and things like that. You got to know about the exact same size. Listen, you're both listening to 6-3, you're 3-27, he's 3-26. Yeah, he's a very old one. I kind of look at him like my junior, but, you know, K-Mac, he's going to be a great player. He's just got to develop more and get in the playbook. So really a lot on you, older guys. There's that large group of young guys, and then there's the seniors in the back. Is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys along as well? Yeah, definitely. We got to be leaders. Like I said, we got to have them play this year. We can't just play all the snaps. They got to get in there and get some work. And we got to get them right, learn all season, so they can play. And not just play, they want to, like, contribute, like, make plays, tackle his sex. He's like, let's stay at the right place for a minute.
Good. It seems like these guys get bigger. Each one of the freshmen class is looking bigger and bigger. And those guys kind of, those are going to kind of while you're in the cell. Yeah, they're definitely some big dudes. And they all work hard. I've only seen much of some of the day too when I'm passing on. But throughout the workouts, they've been working hard. You know, they're determined to have to say that. It looks like they're ready to work with me. I'm going to support this, though. It feels like, you know, there's a lot of great defenses that you have big, athletic defensive tackles who can eat up space, but also move, you know, right? That is that. Is that an environment maybe for great defense? To have guys like you that have some fault, but also have great feet? I think that is definitely. I think if you look at the last couple of nice and matured musicians, winners, like Team on North, they got two good, two athletic detacles. Look at Georgia, two athletic detacles. I think that's definitely neat if you want to go on that big and run it, because they're serious. If you think about this, they're almost defined
by the defense tactics. Like, what's Georgia? Jordan Davis and Daniel Carter and what's Michigan? It's Chris Jenkins. Couple more questions for you. It is funny, like how, I mean, you understand it because you play it, but I feel like some time, I don't know, are people realizing how important defense tackles are a little bit more than they used to? I think so. I think they're starting to develop more and more of these like freakiest detacles. Like in the combine, just now, you see in those guys, they're moving, we're in the 478s and things like that. So we'll see. And when you think about this freakish out there, how do you think you fit into that mold of that kind of player? You watch that and say, yeah, that's me. Yeah, definitely. I think I'm top notch when it comes to detacles, but I don't want to get a big head, but you know, I watch the combine. I watch it do the drills. I mean, I have Tate C, like, looking like my film. So I think I'm up there with all those times. I think you become like a artist and it comes in bad young passes. Yeah. I think your legs have your things.
I mean, you're going to spring practice. You're not doing as much a weapon on a weapon. That's strong. How do you work on that? Do you have like a goal in mind? I don't remember how many I've last year, but you have a goal in mind. How many do you want to have? I mean, as many as I can have, I think I have more than that. But I think he said it on the other side. I think it counts some of them. And it's some of them where I like just missed it. But I think we work on drills matching the hand. I think that goes big. What we do is a D line. Just affecting the quarterback is anywhere you can. It's just great for the defense. That little thing you cover in his eye, he might throw it a little bit to the left to our player. So let's something that you really, really have to work on. You can do that with what you've been doing. It's a theory that's one of the things that you've maybe worked on the most. You can do it in your time here because there are a few guys that I've seen. Oh, that pass through the back. We don't have to ask. We're kind of expected. I think I just have like an eye for the ball kind of. I kind of just look at the quarterback and just I see him like load up.
I just try to get in his ways. And sometimes he throws it to me. I'm your opponent. If you want to be a high state quarterback, you can get back down passes. I mean, they get frustrated, but we're a team. We're just getting better. I should lot of different backs, man. They just learn to grow for them. If you want to pick your top three backs, you have to go right now. One, two, three. Uh, I don't really have a top three, but I'll give you one. I would say, say, Juan Gibbs. And I like McCaffrey. Although he was injured this year. I like McCaffrey. I appreciate it. Who's the best back in this draft? Best back in this draft. I lead that up. That's y'all decision. Thank you all, remember both. Playing well, Howard. What I'm going to remember most. We're a Howard, man. He's just such a great leader, man. It's just like in moments where usually a lot of players
they fold, man. He was just always calm and relaxed, man. He just the leader that he was, man. That's one thing I'm going to remember about him. Great thing to change people. Yeah, he's shoot. He's going to be really good, man. He's on Coach Lock. I think he got the transfer in as well from West Virginia. Just that one, two punch with them both as well. They're going to be really good backs. And so James people's, man. He's smart the way that he goes about his business, man. He's mature. And so, man, he's growing just as a person and as a player. And so, man, yeah. Definitely Ohio State. That running back room is in great hands. I was right there. I got looking at CEO C spot at the time. It's not the best news in reality. And I'm just trying to keep that up. It's all in the same way. Yeah. Coach Hartlein, man. He's full of energy, man. And he's creative as well. Just learning from him as well. Trying to run more outside the backfield. It was being able to learn from Coach Hartlein. And so, he's definitely creative at what he does. And he brings a lot of energy to the team as well. And so, I think that would do really good.
Straight away. You got to wait for the playoffs. I'm going to wait for the playoffs. What strength did you say to start off with? Just the intensity, man. And the intensity of the playoffs, every game, man. It's like the intensity got higher and higher. And so, being able, I know in the lead, it's the same thing. Even if it's not the playoffs, just every game and intensity it keeps getting higher and higher. And so, yeah, you just, I know you got to bring it. Each and every day, and come in and work. Just like Ohio State. I definitely feel like Ohio State. They definitely do a good job of preparing us for that. I just remember, even before going through this process, how I'll talk to a lot of players before that. And they told me a lot of just about how much Ohio State prepared them for the NFL. And so, yeah. What's your favorite word? Yeah. Yeah, I know I took a couple of days off after the National Championship. And then, shoot, right after that, I'm writing sample Florida. And I'm right to it. And so, yeah, I think while I trained,
I trained at Yo-Murth Performance. I think it's called the House of Athlete or the Compound now. They did a good job, man. They're just bringing us in. And the way they went about training us, man, they did a really good job. I mean, that would be cool, you know what I mean? The bucking nearest. No, I haven't. Do you think it's a city Tampa? Tampa, Tampa, nice. It's a nice city, man. Really nice. I think it's really easy for me to win. The 40 to broaden avert. Trent, you've been on races in awesome locker. Do you need to be here with mentality of like, when you've got a linebacker, so you can do the jab, and you're bigger than you and you're in training just more or more? Yeah. Yeah, nah, man. It's really all about technique, and then it's about mindset as well. And so I say, you know, it's for the love of my brother. It's for the love of Will Howard. It's for the love of the receivers who I got on the perimeter. Just making sure, you know, first of all, my quarterback doesn't get sacked. And I told Will, I think it was before the first game. I was like, I got your brother. It's like, I said, man, I'm not going to let you get hit.
And so I don't know if I gave up a sack. I'm not sure that. But I know if I did, I haven't given up too many. And so, man, it's for the love of my brother's, though, man, making sure that the ball get in their hands, you know, the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed. You know, you had to hit the practice field later today. What is something you've been working on right now? In my game. You can't really work on this, you know, in all season, I feel like it's more so, you know, you got to put the pads on. You got to go through some inside run, you know, maybe. It's really just continuing to run through tackles. And so that's, I feel like that's one of the areas in my game. You know, I want to continue to get better at it. I feel like I did a good job at that my senior year. And so I just want to continue to build on that. Yes, I did. Yes, I did. So people, you look like a lot of them are out there. You get back in nursing. I've been met with you before. I did meet with New Orleans as well. I never got that comparison. Actually, I know I haven't come here. Shoot, yeah, man, I haven't come here. Great, great back, man.
Just what he does and those 101 matchups, he's dangerous, man. And he's so smooth. He's so smooth as well. I'm not going to lie, he's smooth. Yeah, inside zone from stack, being able to hit that thing downhill. And I'll say the next one is probably just an option out of the backfield. You know, a man and man coverage. You're getting on that linebacker. And so. What do you want to do? What do you want to do? What do you want to do? What do you want to do? You'll have to turn it towards the little bit without just having the pressure to hit the boys and getting that pressure. So I'll give you a little bit of a second. Yeah, I say to man, the biggest thing is the way that he carries himself, man, and the way that, man, he approaches the game. He comes in with the mindset, he's going to work every single week. Every practice, he's working hard. Even shooting. I don't know. I think he had a, every game was a good game for him, man. And so, but still, man, he always has the mentality to mindset that he's going to come in each
and every day. He's going to continue to work and get better, man. And so he's definitely, man, he's going to be a special player, man. He really is. I think I'm going to look like John, and I'm going to be a last-minute player. I'm going to look like a lot of start-knit in the green house of injuries. I think it's a master's injury. When he went back on it, what do you want to stand down? Man, a lot of ups and downs, man, it's just how you respond to adversity. And I feel like that's something that God has definitely helped me to do better. It's just, I'm going to have something to lean on now. I remember before I met him. Going through those adversity, I had nothing to run to. You can run to people, but they still can't. It's not too much. They can't truly help you. I feel like the only person that can truly help you is your relationship with Jesus Christ. And so being able to lean on him, he gives you, in those moments, where it's tough, where it's slow. And when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about, he gives you that peace and comfort. Even in those moments, man, where it's so hard that you can't explain. It's like, man, I'm going through this,
but how am I still filled with this internal joy? How do I have so much peace in this situation? And so that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you. And so... You know, the back goes firm. Peterson Power and Judgment is through our vectors. Which aspect could be to those other individuals that you run to, and from being around power to ends? Man, those guys have such a great mentality, man. I just really love their mentality, especially Q as well. I talked about Will Howard, his leadership, but Quinch, I'm a mentality man. That boy just gifted. You see, sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like, he should have a negative five yards. And as soon as you know it, he, that running through somebody, stiff arm, and somebody, and shoot, it's a game to 10. And so... You someone makes it, he does, he just realizes two different guys. Yeah. Shoot, I think... Yeah, man, I think it's just like, he's just gifted, man,
to be honest. He's just gifted. He's a big back. He's strong, and so... He's able to do those things. And so, yeah, man, it's definitely... I look at his game, and I want to, you know, at the same time, I want to learn from Quinch, you know, I want to look at his game, and it's like, man, where can I get better at as well? That's the type of player I am. I'm always looking to get better, man. I'm always looking to grow as a player. Julian Sand, oh yeah, he's gonna be a great, but he's gonna be a great quarterback, man. He's so, so accurate, and so, he's definitely, man, I know Coach Dez is definitely gonna get him right, just, you know, container grow as a leader, container grow as a player. And so, he's gonna be really good for high state. Thanks, boss. You gotta have a good start. I'm gonna start it. He's the, I know just the quarterback position. I feel like, you know, the quarterbacks in the past, they've definitely been vocal, and so I feel like, that's something that they're definitely gonna ask Julian Sand as well, is to beat that vocal leader, and lead the offense and lead the team. Thanks, guys. Thanks, guys. Shoot, man, he has a build like JK Dobbins,
and I kinda see them, you know, similar, similarities in their game as well, and I know JK Dobbins, he was a great running back. I feel like he's not talked about his none. A lot, but man, his career here, you watch his highlights, is great. I remember before I recruited, before I committed here, I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights, like every, every one of his years here, like four or five times, and so, man, he was such a great back. And I feel like, you know, when I see JK Dobbins, when I see James people, I see similarities to both of their games, I feel like they play the same. And so, appreciate you all, y'all. You're gonna be back. This,
I feel like he has a lot of experience in taking to Dan Sisky as a very special and successful player in skating, and getting an information. This is what he prepared was the two things he was ready to take. Now that God sees that, I think he's feeling losing. He's struggling to get in straight to harder with nochmal, but cold as hell at least. tacky everyday really the same way. It's technically a van's area rep. Physically how different are you? Weight wise, body wise, all that from the year ago. I think I got a lot bigger. I'm like 240. I'm like 244 right now. Last year I played at like 236 to 37. What does it feel like at 244 or a value? It's like almost a different machine out there. Yeah, what does it feel like to be running around out there? Like you are with more than a more bad. I just feel like I'm like like like more downhill, like stronger.
Like I'm taking all the bloods better. It's big. No. Is it daunting? Maybe that's not the correct term. But to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year. And you played quite a bit last year and stuff. What do you have to get straight in your head about being on the field that much more? It's just got to get ready to just play 30 more snaps. But how would you describe how much you're looking forward to it from an 8-stand point? I'm looking forward to it. I'm ready for it. I'm ready for it. The text is opener. It's a rematch. But it's not really two different teams compared to the last time you all played and stuff. How has that enhanced this camp for you and this team getting ready for it? Were an opener of that magnitude? Yeah, with an opener like that. We've been emphasizing it a lot. We know we got coming. So we know we got to do it. We've been prepared for it. I already just probably worked with him today. I think Riley ready to play right now. He advanced freshman. He ended up here in the book. He studied in like he advanced.
And his measurements was crazy. He saw it on the sideline too. Or you said you were ready. You know you're ready. What was that process like during last season? Could you feel yourself becoming more and more ready for whatever the team needed from you? Yeah. That's pretty much what my role was. Whenever I was needed I had to step up. So I feel like that's what built me into me being able to say I'm ready for this year. When you say ready, is it more a physical thing? Is it a mental thing? When I say ready, I think it's pretty much like everything physically, mentally, emotionally. I think I'm there. A different piece of that feeling this year is that last year. That's what brought us back to the back. I asked the one more time. How different is that retrial ability? I feel like it's a way bigger responsibility with me having to step up this year. But I kind of go about it the same way.
Like last year I was attention over everything I did. I feel like this year is going to be the same thing. It's probably a little bit more. Somebody who's some reason. And what word? How many words do you want? I say, describe my game. When you think of me, you would think of like a bullet, like a silver bullet. I don't really know what it is. That's how I like to play and think. No, I ain't got to be my nickname, but. I'm not saying that the nickname can be that's all. Oh yeah, yeah. And I don't know what you want. Yeah, that's it. I'm a bit more surprised. I think it's a lot more powerful. You've got a lot of specific styles and how it's free. How does that fit you? And what are you enjoying about the delaying and that kind of stuff? Think of fit me, because. I don't know. I just like the defense. I felt like we got, like you said, we got a lot of freedom.
And we're going around a lot, a lot of the terms. Like, you know, I don't know. I don't really not answer that. That's okay. Does it. You can. You can just go on your instincts. I don't even know if I say that because there's a lot of thinking going on, but it's like I just like his deep I like I'm pretty deep because I like what you got going on Now I wanted to much sad I was kind of like happy for you Yeah, that's what you want That's my dog so yeah kind of missing a little bit, but yeah, I'm happy for you Guys who played some last year, but maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for That wasn't maybe your national championship you guys How much do you feel that is a guy who certainly contributed last year, but will be in this bigger role and Yeah, I do feel like Yeah, I do feel like I did win a nattie last year, but like you said my role wasn't
Same as how's gonna be this year. So yeah, I definitely want to go get another one experience that like feeling with me Beyond feel a lot more place Here I want to be a part of this team and you know when you when you want to and you have passion to add value That makes it a little easier to get up and do the workouts in the offseason You know whether you're 22 or are gonna be 31 So yeah, I mean, it's it's definitely special About the organizational They have always had this work as a reputation of rewarding the players. You see this offseason St. Brown golf, you know, Pnai not yourself. What does what does it say about the organization that you know He's like is changing the reputation a little bit. We're war in the guys Well first and foremost those three guys absolutely deserving of every penny they got Incredible and you know me being in the room with Pnai every single day like I was you know ecstatic for him And of course the other guys with Pnai's he's my line. He's my guy
I think it speaks to a good culture that's been built and it's not built on sand. It's it's genuine. It's real You bring certain guys in because of what they can add not just as players, but as people And Like I said, it's it's a genuine thing that the that the staff is looking for and it's not oh We're just gonna bring this guy in and then get rid of them and try to find something cheaper I Just think it speaks to the culture we find guys that fit we you find guys that represent what we are about not only are they phenomenal players But they represent us they represent the city And to be able to keep a core group of guys around I feel like more and more in the NFL You guys guys coming in and out and it's hard to develop kind of some cohesiveness and especially us on the offensive line We got to play together for a long time now. I mean, that's valuable. I mean, it's That's big time and then you think even the quarterback position
Where his drops are how he moves in the pocket things like that and then Jared and his familiarity with with Saint And I think it speaks to they want to win Like we want to win. This is what we're here to do. We're here to win. So we're gonna keep our guys. They can help us win Yeah So I bring I've been Going back and forth a little bit for probably about a year and a half now with the organization because I knew like I want to be here There was no no questions for me like This is the place I want to be I want to stay here and then There's just a lot of moving parts. I'm not the only person in this organization. I'm not the only guy that wants a contract extension And then I think
Coming off two surgeries. I think they probably wanted to see how I was moving around a little bit And then in OTAs I actually went up and I had a conversation with them. I was like where are we at? You know I hear things from my agent And you know from our our salary cat people and they're talking and I'm getting it kind of second-hand information I want to hear it like tell me where we're at just so I know I just want the information. So it's communicated well And pretty much what he told me was to it to you what happened And I just Basically had to had to stay patient and for me it was never gonna be Hold out of training camp Oh, if it comes to the season we're not gonna play games like that. That's just not me Um, I'm gonna show up and I'm gonna play Because that's what I do and that's what I'm here to do So I think it was pretty seamless I just talked to Charlie and disner upstairs. They said it was super smooth. I think it happened in a day Which pretty much how my my second one happened and my third one happened as well pretty quickly
So I I think there's uh, I think there's value and just showing up and and going to work and I think the team knows that I'm not gonna change if just because I'm not getting what I want when I want it And then ultimately we both got what we wanted um So for me was just I got the information that I wanted from Dan and when we communicated man to man and was very amicable and Since that conversation I felt like it was promising that it would happen. I didn't know when exactly. I had a ballpark idea um And then it all worked out. You know, I showed up to camp I went and played and The agents and the salary cap people do their thing and now you know moving forward. I can just focus on Plain football Going through camp day to day. I don't have to have any of that hanging over my head and um Um It's pretty good feeling Taylor aligned in the Liberty Fankless job, but it's not here
um, what does it mean to play for a team that the values that side of the game? And when did you first sense that from Brad and Dan? You know, there's there's a couple times every single camp where Dan will come into the offensive line room And he'll say I need to see it today Um And I've never had a head coach come in our room and say say something like that And he would pop in every now and then and just say like Today I need to see it from you guys Not that we're not out there working hard every single day, but he's like my eyes are on you guys today um And it seems like a lot of those times they're Kind of some ballbuster practices that are they're going to be kind of a grind it out and That's what offensive line is Um, and I think you see it with the way they draft they draft guys and the trenches and even dating back to before They were hired this organ is it I was drafted. Graham was drafted. Joe doll was drafted in my class
Um, Frank was draft like we were drafting lineman. We were trying to build this team the right way Um, and we had some pieces and then Rat and Dan just continued to build on that um, and I think it's paying dividends and I can't speak enough to you know going back to the culture fit of the quality of people that they bring in and how when you get along I don't know. Just people's play flourishes even more um And that's that's another big reason like this is where I wanted to be like I had Pretty much no interesting going to any other team. I wanted to be here and a big factor of that Is the guys that I get to play with and I want to continue to play with them because they're important to me um, and I think You know the offensive and defensive line Based on how the drafts have gone and based on the quality of player that they've brought in. I mean you can see that it's uh It's definitely of importance to the organization Kind of along the same lines Given where the roster is given the success of the teams can had recently is there something extra
Balinating about getting your first contract extension under this specific regime Yeah, 100% Not that I didn't think that they wanted me here because if they if they didn't want me here I wouldn't be here um But I had gotten my second contract from a from you know a previous regime basically um It's not like I never felt like I was like wanted here, but it's just like that little extra Hey, we we want you here and we we want you to continue to add value um Because we were a young team and I'm not getting any younger um But I still think I can play and I think I can play for as long as I want um And that's kind of kept me young and I feel like that's kept me um Motivated to kind of have that edge But yeah, I mean it's just that that little extra where just kind of reconfirmed So I mean when Dan was hired he he called me that same day. So It's not uh instance of oh, I'm not wanted here
they just kind of Double down with this contract. We we love you. We respect you. We want you here. We think you can play We think you can continue to add value and unless get this thing going Thanks guys Yeah You guys travel your fans travel very well, but obviously this game is in Dallas um Do you guys Kind of thrive and like the playing front of hostile crowds? Uh, I think guys kind of like going in enemy territory sometimes you know it feels good being a little bit of the villain you could say but uh Yeah, I mean, obviously you got to take him to fact that it isn't in Texas So it could be a lot of environment could be like an away environment We obviously know that but I mean, that's right. I'm aware you put the ball down. We're just gonna come show up and play and I think there's a staff that you guys Your opponents have not been called for a holding call since September or something like that Is that something that you guys are aware of and do you guys point out on the film?
Anything call that one maybe call that one Yeah, we're aware of this that um, you don't pay attention to it too much. So you guys just play um I don't really got too much to say about that you gotta just play through and just Let your let your talent take over. Don't let it come down to a ref decision Over here to the right Austin Ward podcast something it didn't feel like Against Oregon that you guys had to blitz as much as you had doing maybe some other games in the second half of the season Why is that what does it allow the linebackers to do when you don't have that responsibility? What what made that a successful approach on Wednesday? Yeah, I think uh when you got as talented as guys We do a front with those four guys up front I mean a four-man pressure is feeling like a six-man pressure to the quarterback So you're able to drop out and be able to drop everyone else in the coverage So it makes a lot easier on our defense when the the defensive line is just taking over like that I mean It's it's tough for an offense to do anything. We got four four-man four-man rush Feel like a zero coming at you and then you got everyone dropping into coverage Just kind of just shout over the field. So I mean it's definitely makes the demons lie easier for everyone else when the defense lines playing like that
Jim knows it talked about this a little with having so many veteran players that You could make different game plans. You don't have to just be you know pigeonhole into one thing We kept a week. Does it feel when you get in there and you guys start game planning like they are Very different for every opponent for you guys at this point. Um I mean, I don't know if I would say that. I think they they keep it Simple enough where guys are like I'm used when we're doing. I mean might Like look like that for like the quarterback. We might be giving them different looks and things like that But um, I don't think it's over complicated at all But I mean I might just be because we got a veteran defense as well So could be a little bit biased, but that's kind of the way it feels. This doesn't feel over the complicated like that I'm gonna Joey compliment Columbus this back. Sunny. How do you think it's helped you guys to put Caleb down? Jack down more into the box Play late in the season. I've been doing that seems like more. How does it help you guys? Yeah, I mean, I think both our safeties have done a really good job, you know dropping down in the box
And being able to come down faster run run run support I mean, I think when you see guys coming from 12 yards and they're making tackles for two yards games It's all that's pretty impressive. I mean, you saw late in the last game come from the weak side boundary hash about 10 12 yards You come down hit to do the two yards and then home was knock them out So I mean both our safeties are they're super impressive in the run game So it definitely makes it the health with the defense, you know, usually you're dropping the safety in usually those four yard runs five yard runs and where They're stopping for two yard runs no yard runs. So super impressive and helps the defense on a lot We'll go to Jeremy Birmingham The podcast Sunny, how much does the defense structureally changed since the Oregon game in Indie gene or his person more of a lost time by you guys just being More better in and knowing the defense better or as there've been fundamental changes that have been made because it looks a lot different Yeah, I mean, I think there's been some changes but I think a lot of this mentality of trying to be a speed more aggressive than we're just trying to
It's having an aggressive mindset. I think you've seen that when it and showed up on tape with the pressures the TFLs and things like that and I think we've gotten a lot better since like since the beginning of the year and we kind of improved on the issues that Shown up each week because the issues are always there and I think we've improved on those really well And then obviously look like completely different team now Aggressiveness from the coaching staff since then not just Coach Knowles and individual position coaches like But even from my day like it's as he been a different type of leader I think he's been a great leader the whole year I think after that team on Norfolk also kind of Uncred down and say like hey, we're gonna we're gonna get up. We're gonna start swinging We're gonna keep swinging as hard as we can and see what happens at the end of the game And I think that's what we've been doing the past two games and it's worked out pretty well But next to make Walker letterman rope So you mentioned a great kind in earlier. What stands out to you about Gunner Helm and how do you kind of take out a guy
It's a such a focal point for us. I think he runs great routes. He has good hands I think they set up some really nice plays for him You see some of those plays where he kind of sneaks out of the protection and comes out comes out wide open I think the biggest in that stands out probably the routes in the hands. It's super impressive for a tight end Um, you know, obviously always be aware where he's out on the field and there's gonna be some explosive play set up for him Any other questions here? Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, uh, Tim made letterman rope. I'm sorry. Good minute eruption. Jerry When you were in a nutshell, how would you describe him to someone because he he seems even more effective when he kind of gets out of the pocket Or moves around and stuff So honey, what do you see when you think of him? um I would say the capability of like early on the game. No him getting his routine Like some of those routine throws routine throws they run the ball. That's play action shot 50 yards And I'll feel is like that. I think it's a super good job. Good job with that
Be that would sell the play action pull the safety's up and then hit you down Feel with a six-year-old bomb thing like that So I think that's the biggest thing that stands out to me on film. He's a super super talented quarterback super talented arm talent He can get the ball on many different ways But uh, yeah, that's probably how I put it in the nutshell. He's just super talented player You can make any throw on the field Um, like you said he can move around a little bit I don't think people respect that enough though his legs he can move around and extend the plays and hurts you down bill They really are the guy used to be in this building at least for four or five months Um, I wasn't really here with him The only thing is really you play you play some former players before but uh Obviously's a talented player. I think a lot of guys have a lot of respect for him So it's just gonna be a good match. I'm excited for it We'll go to Bill Rebellion's Columbus dispatch. Adam the wing will talk to you next. I'll ask you now um Uh, I'm sure it's the last year on your body. We talked about do you have any idea what you can do about next year I mean you obviously can go to the NFL. Do you have any thoughts on that right now? I haven't thought about it at all. Just worry about winning
That's got you that's it from Columbus for sunny styles anymore on your end No more on our hand. Thank you, sunny. Thank you My reps and uh He's had his his uh, she's fair share of game time reps those third downs and things like that And I think he's came in and that is job pretty well But uh, I think he's just already trust each week. We have to we have to we can search for with coach knows so I think um He's gonna keep it better. Drop out of Uh, I don't know. Honestly Yeah, I don't know. We wrote about pretty good hit Yeah, I mean, I think coach day toss one all the time when you go out there and play a game where you're on the game There should be individual players on both sides of the ball that are setting the tone Like um, for example, you see like late and we'll play the ordinate in that running back early in the game
But I feel like that sets a tone or you see our outline firing off the ball putting people on their back Traveon and quencha on running through people like that sets a tone And I think uh the rest of the team beings off that energy. So it definitely definitely Something Um, yeah, obviously what said the time is a lineback to be physical We'll let everyone know you're fifth when you let one of them know got me let a guy know we'd be here for four quarters But uh, you're not chasing after the play, but I mean definitely feels good to be the one set the tone Uh, I think they have a variety of backs running backs that are all explosive Love they got 24 they got the other kids 20 because daddy's being a felt player And then also the another part of the right game is quarterback. He's very explosive Um, he runs hard, but uh, I think there's a variety of ways they can do it and they're very physical and with the way they run the ball
Um, I think as a whole another uh a whole other Dimension to the game. Yes, a whole other dimension of the game and uh Record recording the ball as they're having actually having the box of extra blocker So kind of mess with the deepened sometimes sometimes sometimes you may have that bring extra head to the box and match that So it can be a little tricky sometimes Yeah, I think he's dangerous either or um, I think sometimes those scrant wills are more dangerous You got got a drop in the covers taking their eyes off the first decade kind of opens up the field form That's like a guaranteed like 10 yards. You don't have someone's buying them So that that can hurt you. I mean, you feel like you got everyone covered in the turnaround. He's he's spreading down the field for 10-15 yards There's a tough play In cover three, you gotta protect the inside first it's fast guy, but I think you gotta get hands on him You got a collision of the mess of the timing on the route
Yeah, no doubt You don't play as a little kid did you see him more than the db on a live paper? Um I'm a little younger probably receiver You know, they didn't play that probably more receiver. He was always like so explosive. He's scoring so many touchdowns But uh as we got the high school, I could see like His build and his speed and size and physicality would definitely work at db as well So I was pretty interested to see if he was ever going to switch to db which obviously did not Uh, you got a match or physicality you got to match their will I mean, you say they find a way I think that's to do something with their will and that can start with their head coach and coach Freeman I think it doesn't very job with the team and It flows all the way down through the players I think the quarterback right away, and I think he's a huge part of that will to just get it done Did you see a lot of times in like fourth and one fourth and twos or third and three third and six is that they give him the ball I think that's their guy
I think it's a great competitive is a great leader. I think the offense feeds off him Thank you very much. Thank you him, you know, continue to take steps in his career He's still very young, so he has a lot of good football ahead of him And I would think this whole office is just beginning literally Mm-hmm. You're really sense of like can you bury your offense and how You Yeah, we haven't honestly even started install yet So I haven't even got a lay of the land quite yet. I'll probably take a look at Just got our iPads within the last few days. So I'll try to take a sneak peek at What we have looking for, but you know, I know with him talking to Zach Erts He does a great job of trying to get his playmakers involved, which I think we have a really good group of guys from the run-of-backs the receivers and some solid tight-ends as well So I'm just looking forward to see where I fit into that and you know, I think with him his biggest things is Making sure that playmakers are making plays and trying to fit the scheme around that which is always good to hear
Good to see too Yeah Yeah It's definitely um, you know an adjustment obviously when you're learning a new offense and it's kind of the same mentality I take into last year and years past where you kind of just want to take a day one approach Kind of erase what you've learned In the past, but at the end of the day, I think You know schemes and the NFL are relatively similar. It's just the names and the formations that may be a little different So I just getting used to the terminology and cliffs offense is just going to be Something as adjustment for all of us, but the good thing about is I got some good time on my hands They really put some working studying when I leave this place So I could come in here when we have walkthroughs and when we start to put our helmets on we can really get the ground running So so far it's we haven't learned anything yet But my my approach is the same try to take good notes in there ask good questions and then study on my own at night
Yeah Yeah Yeah, I think I got some really good work down in Florida just Working on my footwork just getting better at the top of my routes Sharper on my speed cuts dig routes out routes and just being cleaner with my footwork at the top of the routes I think you know with a little bit of zone coverage that we've seen in the past with some Teams kind of running more too high-shel you're gonna get a little bit more of catch technique Where guys are kind of sitting at the top of your route So I want to be better at being efficient again How those routes when a guy's kind of sitting in my depth whether it's a 15-yard comeback or a 12-yard Curl route, you know being able to get out efficiently so I can Keep create and keep the separation within my route So obviously I'm always still working on my ball skills and making sure I'm just catching my footballs in all season Just really being better at the top of the routes and you know sharper out of my cuts is something that I I think I can improve on
Good to see you too You're Yeah, I think I think that's really started with coach coin in the way He's really integrated everybody over the first two days. I think We haven't even gotten to X's and those quite yet We just really begin to know one another getting out there with chat and the strength coaches and getting some good workouts in just Kind of creating a fostering an environment where everybody's the same and continuing to Have a competitive environment. I think that brings out the best in one another And obviously, you know you have guys like Zach Urts who's played a lot of football and won a championship A Marcus Mario de obviously Bobby Wagner who's a future Hall of Famer. So you got some guys who have been brought in here Who know what it's supposed to look like at this level and for myself? I just want to continue to add My value and be even more vocal this year than I have in the past
Especially with possibly a new quarterback coming in. I think that can really help our offense have You know some more unity with the guys who have know what it looks like helping bring those guys the younger guys along So I don't know if you had a chance to watch So you didn't want to use the word Yeah Right Kind of the whole Honestly, I just think of it as a new year Just talking to Sam Cosme we've been here for a few years. So there's a lot of new faces. I think You know, this is probably the most I would say turnover we've had in the last few years So there's guys coming from all different areas walks of life and But I think the one thing is the saying they're all coming in looking for an opportunity to compete Take another step in their careers and prove that they're one of the best players at the position And I think coach Quinn has emphasized that we're going to have the opportunity to prove ourselves
Whether you're a 10-year vet or a second-year Player, you know, this is a clean slate for everybody. So I think it's just about getting on the same page Enjoying coming in here and working together and also Just pushing each other in these workouts and then when we start getting on the field Really get that competition going try to simulate as we go along in this all season process of how the games are going to be There's Hey, how are you doing? Good to see you too Yeah, I think coach Quinn has really assembled a very unique group of coaches. There's multiple head coaches There's multiple quarter coordinators have come from different places and so You have guys who have a lot of football experience some have played some have coached in big games
And then you bring in, you know, the talent that we have defensively and offensively and I just think you can feel the unity and the sameness and in the message that he's trying to Preach to our team and it's we're going to be tough and we're going to be competitive But we're also going to have fun and you like I think he said in your guys's interview He said he likes to do you know, hard shit with good people. So um, I think that's fun, you know a guy like me likes to put my nose down and grind and work So I know him and I are going to continue to hit it off and you know, it's just my job to help bring other guys along with me Yeah Very good look like to take your next step as a vocal leader Yeah Um, I think for me I've grown a lot in my vocal leadership. I think I Try to always find the balance of when to say something when I to say something I think I never want I always wanted to be a person when I say something that means something like you don't want to be
You're giving all the motivation of speeches, but you're not backing up with your play or you're you're talking so much You kind of your message gets drowned out and so it's kind of continuing to find that balance of when to say things and when to kind of just take a step back But um, I think I've gotten a really good fill of how to do that. I think obviously with a new coaching staff You just try to understand what they how they want things done and you try to you know Bring what you do well into that and you also try to encourage the guys who Haven't taken those steps in their career to do that as well So um, I think for me is just really starting in my position group. I think we have Still a very young group Kind of inexperienced for the most part, but I think we have a lot of talent in there and it's just My job and in Bobby's job and To continue to bring that group along as we go throughout this season You
Yeah, I hit it really hard this off season So I kind of started training a little bit after the Super Bowl So I got a good six to eight weeks in to where I feel football ready right now Which is great for me because you know, obviously we're probably having a mini camp at the end of this month So that'll be I'm already in football shape So that's that's excited to know that I'm ready to be able to run routes and get going with our quarterbacks and get going with our system So um, you know as this off season goes on I just trust the plan that Chad and the guys have here I want to be here for all the workouts and things like that and be a part of the team building and Just continue to learn the playbook as we start to install things and Be at a point where I could go out there and be confident in my game what I've worked on this off season and And put that into how that fits into this offense So I always try to pride myself on knowing multiple positions just to have be flexible for the team and be flexible myself So I'll be ready for whatever they wherever they put me
Yeah, you never Well, I'm gonna say never but it's it's always tough seeing like some way you build a really good relationship with go on and move on in their career and especially your quarterback because as a receiver You want to continue to try to build that chemistry, you know I mean, that was only our first year playing with one another and I feel like Him and I had our We made some great plays and we had some you know room for growth And I think that comes with any new quarterback receiver relationship and so But to see him go in a situation where we'll have a chance to compete and play under a really good quarterback in Gino And I think he'll he'll really like playing with receivers like Well throwing the receivers like lock it and and jess and smith and jig but in DK You know, I mean, so I think he's going in a situation where if I have a chance to continue to show that he can play quarterback at a high level in the sleeve Which I still truly believe and we know this is a business and you know, I think hopefully things work out for both sides But I always have a lot of respect for Sam how he handled things good in bat last year and
You know, I think he took a really big step in his career to continue to prove that he can play at a high level Thank you guys. Good to see you Appreciate it Yeah, that's it. We're done You To get that call from coach county made my day. I was so excited and my family was excited You know, we're just we're just so glad to be here and still water and you know to be here at Oakland State Yeah, so compare Kansas to still water. What's that It's been great, you know, I tell you there's probably a little more similar similarities than there are differences
You know both really good college towns both great fan bases You know, not big not you know, just great college town so You know the people are awesome here and You know, it's just I'm just excited to be here. It's a it's a it's a beautiful place Really enjoy yeah coach and give us some of the names that are having really been talked about enough on the offensive line in your group that you think should be talked about more Well, I mean They're all they're all worthy of being mentioned. I think they're all working really hard They're all limited good kids You know guys that stand out to me right now. I mean in terms of just guys Some great leadership the Marcus Keyes and Johnny was I mean, I really appreciated their leadership And and and how they've handled themselves because they've been here the longest and
They've had to go through you know a couple off at the nine coaches, you know, and I know it's the transitions in hard but they've been awesome great leaders and Just have done a really nice job in that regard some of the younger kids I talked about You know Bryce Bre you know, he's a lecturer freshman that he he's been competing at that left tackle spot He was started for us left tackle this whole spring so going into the in the fall he's gonna be competing We're dealing I think he like started six games last year So so that'll be a nice little battle, you know, Jacob Farrell been very impressed with him You know, I've been impressed with that with Hunter Wooders, you know In terms of his toughness and and how he's a his work ethic So but there's a lot of well young a lot of good young guys that have been working really hard, you know
Hunter Anthony and Tyrese Williams I'm excited about those guys as well. I got a good young Sure dude coach. Thank you. Thank you for your time today and We're very welcome. Thank you. Thank you So you were Coaching under Bill Snyder forever. Yeah, you can probably write a book about what you learn book Maybe in the synopsis when you learn from Snyder coaching under him Geez well, I mean just Want to try to get better every day, you know And never be satisfied and You know He's he was very demanding, you know, great demand on his players Mayors coaches You know, he just very competitive You know and and I've said this before There's just there's a lot of similarities between between these two programs And maybe the personalities are different, but you know, but but but but you know when I first first day
I got here first day our first staffing coach kind of talked about about us being a more tougher More physical more discipline for all team and that's all coach Snyder talk You know those are the things he would talk about, you know, and just having us being Being being being the toughest most disciplined team out there And and and and that's you know, so it's like it was left here in the same thing And so and that's what we're stressing and that's what we want to be and that's what we're trying to be that this year We hear at Oklahoma's day. Well some of some of gunnies These teams Well, yeah, I think we got it. I mean I we got to be demanding on them and we got it We got to instill the toughness and continue to still the toughness continue to instill discipline and and And just not be satisfied, you know and and and just be demanding on
What is it being called? Well, I mean I just I just want us to get better every day and I want us to my goal again is for us to To be tougher and to be more physical and and and and and to be and to be And to be more disciplined, you know and and and and really focus on those Focus on those attributes and I know if you do That will carry over to us being successful in the field Being being such a veteran Social media Well, it's impacted quite a bit. Yeah, it's it's it's it's very interesting, you know It's taking me, you know, I got it you know while to get used to all but I'm not saying I'm great on it But you're on the Twitter. Yeah, but I'm on Twitter and all that good stuff and so so You know, it's it's it's it's it's been it's been fine But it is it is it is having an impact on on on on on on recruiting for sure
Well, that's a great question. I mean that was probably the biggest transition for me was was just Uh, and one of the most exciting things for me was being able to be a part of this offense because coach gun use Offences have been the best some of the best in the country period. I mean, they've been awesome So I wanted to be a part of it But with that it was you know, it can't just stay we were we were you know Ground in pound and we were a lot of quarterback run name something And but also just Taking as much time off the clock as we could so we could keep the keep the ball away from other defenses You know for other other other offices and so just Slowing down and that type of stuff so here was playing fast and getting guys to just teaching my guys to you know To get up and make the calls and get the points and that was different and so but but that's kind of where I was Where I was going to what where where I was uh, you know, where hey, I just being able to to resource Johnny and Marcus
You know, how'd you guys do that? You know, what what what was some of the things, you know, and and Jason Meckendood was really helpful with that as well You know, so but it's been a great transition Been a great job in a mingle with Depending upon who wins the quarterback job One may even work over what is that What's been great with Sean Sean's awesome. I mean, I've said Sean's got a great. He's got a vision He knows where he what he wants and he's very passionate He's a very intense very detailed and And so you know he knows he knows exactly where he wants this offense to go and so I'm really excited I'm really excited to get a chance to work with him and in the whole offensive staff has been awesome You know, Waz and and Casey and And Mack have all been great So it's really good. It's gonna be talking about Trying to hurt me who can't to state before and obviously this time
All of those pitches like in those conversations that I do at the time of those times. Well, I mean It was great coach gunnies You know He was awesome and then so It just circumstances just For whatever reasons just didn't know I mean to to be able to do it But but but I'm just grateful now for this opportunity. I'm just grateful a gaming call And just that's one thing I am very grateful for and very very thankful that he You know you gave me that call so I'm very really excited to be here Does it feel It's about that It's the last year and like we think back to the whole record so much here What has the last kind of year been like for you There's kind of So I Was definitely chasing like because I was always on Myself one year I was hurt and my junior I got hurt during track
So I was able to like I was a highly flutter anything and this time last year's like when my crew really picked up And it's just like it's been crazy like most of the other like people just leaving me I've been in my corner my coach is empty I just give you the motivation to go Oh, yeah, that's a big good before I even got a hosting offer and before I He was exactly actually Through with them a couple of times and both Lots Yeah, I was working with I knew his head coach And he invited me to come in run routes and I actually ran routes for Tavis right If we was exactly And I like First team knew we had a lot more up we got got together Us the freshman class and the school is working on anything he's definitely got nice on this This cornerback
The quarterback Yeah, yeah, they're definitely talented and say I always say I should be dying and they make it hard for you and just We played this high level competition practice and you go on a game like twice as easy to the To the practice and he's I guess they've been kind of like a moment first I realized oh Yeah, just like I just first like on high school. I would just take some like reps and ever see we just good Yeah, I just had had speed and We catch your abilities like face separation and I come to college and for everybody's fast everybody's big So you have fun new ways to get open. It's really good for yourself to hire on you
You guys are just Yeah, I think that's leading are you are you doing the little things? What's that like I think that fish boy? When you're at a big time program like how to stay I think everyone's judge know everything you do is important how you uh Higher locker looks important all the small details. I'm here with you. I'm here with the end of all good Calling you basically the air parent. I mean a lot people think you're gonna be the guy What do you think you have to prove over the next several weeks and then Appreciate it. Yeah, I don't always have the outside noise. I'm just focused on getting better every day You know getting ready for Friday's practice. Uh, just I'm hoping I'll practice there I was gonna kind of ask the same question and then how do you handle That like having that really people here to watch a practice or you know being or walking around in Columbus When you know that the quarterback's probably the most judge position maybe in all of college football You know, I think how I guess that before I'm a I'm really just focused on the fundamentals And improving every day and just get better You know taking what coach day coach making coach wrestler
Bringing to us Yeah, I think this winter I've uh gave a little bit of weight got stronger so that was a big point I was just in the winter and I really just you know focusing on Just getting big and stronger I've looked about gained about 10 pounds a second I'm expecting I feel I feel good now uh just you know being a little bit heavier It was good it was big big thanks to coach Mekko What do you think of being the starting quarterback? What does that look like to be? What does that? Yeah, it's definitely um definitely the goal Um, we're so long as we Just get Yeah, 15 kinds of things and just get What should that person look like? Yeah, I think um, you know, the type of sky first guy and last guy out kind of like everyone says and You know being that leader of the offense. Were you able to do last year?
What's that I with you last year about you know, Billy Fessler what he was able to do with the quarterbacks And how much did you specifically get to work with that? Yeah, he had uh he had so much impact on our quarterback room last year Him and coach Kelly both did a great job with us and uh, I was really appreciative of those guys Just we're uh we work closely with the coach wrestler and uh, I was happy to see him yelling in how much different We talked to you in your go-to practice Just getting here Come from Alabama How much different a year later do you feel in this program as a quarterback all of a sudden? Yeah, I think when you when I first got here, I was still learning how everything works and learning what you're doing Um, and now I think I know what I would know what I'm doing Within the plays or within um how the program works. So I think it's uh, it's been good to just get adjusted But uh still still trying to improve and when you talk about toughest guide first one in us There's two other guys that are trying to do that How do you be that guy when two other guys know that that's what they think so we're trying to do in that job Yeah, I think it's um our room is very competitive, but we're also very close
Uh, it's only three it's only three guys in our room. So I think it's um it's important for us to just be close, but also better I'm working you throughout a watch Go ahead. Yeah, we're watching you through one of the biggest things that stands out I think it's our quick releases and still how much How did you develop that quick motion? I think um, I've naturally had a kind of a quick release You know kind of high school I was always I was just kind of had a quick release and I've been trying to get a quicker Uh, you Said the watch will Have a last year. What did you learn? Maybe you were looking to have a take in the understanding Trying to get each other better Yeah, I think will and Devon had a great friendship, but they were all sparingly competitive So I think it was uh, it was definitely good to see and that's the thing that we have in our room this year I want to show you were the toughest guy when nobody could touch your friends Um, I think there's there's a lot of ways to show toughness toughness and support about it I think you know taking metal reps um, you know finishing out plays bursting through the line
I think all those control toughness You know, we spent a lot of hours here where you know Watch it watching tape I wouldn't say that I think um, I think we all kind of the whole core program is held to a standard We all are you know together in this trend Beyond time and show up early just how it was a little bit easier for me like I've said Just a familiarity with the facility and the people and the coaches So the rest of the society built and they kind of understand how I learned and how I Accurate and my mind and so they've been able to coach me and adapt to how I learned Teach for things You know um, it's the biggest thing that I've tried to focus on is Translating everything from those mediums to the field as quickly as I can just pick it up on every
Click note that I can't any advantage I can get You know on the on my opponent. I want I want to have that advantage and So I might everything in the meeting and trying to just an experience that's the third of the most possible Yeah, coach Coach wrestler and coach CK Our system for best coach and other quarterbacks in Tata and to get together like Walk through or Whether that's just me coming in and having a little meeting with coach wrestler Before workouts or afterward balance There's something going on every single day Just to build my development and really give me like I said in that man I'm just trying to learn everything I can and be the best possible player and personal from me Yeah, really like I said just learning everything. I got to understand why we're doing things we are doing And you know what we are trying to do with it and how we're going to do it and how we're gonna accomplish it You know that's still a learning thing for me. Just start second practice. I really just want to get better and you know
Amplify it and make it better so that one Friday's practice Yeah, definitely very I open for me just because I didn't I think coming from the place that I came from Like like you said not doing under center things like that like those little intricate details Even to just taking a step under center that I never Newer there because I never done it. So learning that stuff and You know fine tuning everything that has to be that has to go into being a great quarterback It was definitely very eye-opening first day I got here Coach I was able to get Versus Yeah, really just you know I think I think I'm getting better every day. That's the main focus just
Trum develop everything with that Get better everything on our can and be a better leader for the team be a better teammate Be a better person outside of practice. That's really been the main development We'll see where it takes me throughout the spring, but just trying to get better every single day to build herbs in the day The better Leadership that you have for your team and the coach relationships that you have the longer to take you With him myself just nobody hated but nobody just like everybody looked will He was comfortable talking to anybody. I mean that's something I'm going to carry with me Just trying to be familiar with everybody know everybody Know everything about them. That's really been a main focus just building relationships for people I don't really talk to and really just trying to build that chemistry It's been a main focus
Yeah, I think the first time that I had taken a snap with my offense on field my group of offense on the field it was like This is actually happening now, and it's not just a dream that I'm trying to You know make happen it was a dream now living now and So you know, I just take every opportunity I can Bless to be here. I love it here Great Really just like I said you're better every single day the guys in the room are really best in the country So you just got to compete every day. I don't have state. That's what it breeds of competitions What we talk and that's what we do I'm really just getting better every day. That's been all of our focuses I Was curious how you assess Texas off-mance and they've had their struggles in the running game So they look like a team that kind of passed heavy and leans into the past First and how would you evaluate that part of their game? I mean, I mean you say as you say they struggle the past few games of the run game But I think they got a super explosive run game if you watch the Clemson game. I think they put up almost
2050 Russian or something like that I think they're a team that's capable of putting up around 50 points if you let them So I mean we're deep enough shut ready to play it's in an extremely talented offense on all three levels I think the quarterbacks great player the running backs are very very explosive She was very explosive. We got great tight-dain great online. So they're they're a well-rounded offense And you guys are big favorite in the game Do you worry at all about you know overconfidence or complacency just because the way you have dominated the opposition so far No, I don't think anything outside noise matters. I think there's things in set about it before we won those two games And other things being set up about us after we won those two games and those things might be different And it really doesn't matter to us We're just focused on the opinion inside these what inside the Woody and We know we got a bear egg in every single week. I mean, it's a really good team. It doesn't matter how how it beat the last two teams This is a whole completely different team Thank you. Sorry That's all our questions on zoom All right To the local level here fill a revenge Olympus this batch. I mean
You guys travel your fans travel very well, but obviously this game is in Dallas You guys kind of thrive and like the playing front of hostile crowds Uh, I think guys kind of like going in an enemy territory sometimes. You know it feels good being a little bit of the villain you could say but Yeah, I mean, obviously got to take him to fact that it isn't Texas So it could be a lot of fireman could be like an away environment. We obviously know that but I mean, that's right. I'm aware you put the ball down. We're just gonna come show up and play and I think there's a staff that you guys that your opponents have not been called for a holding call since X of timber or something like that Is that something that you guys are aware of and do you guys point out on the film? Anything called out one lady call that one We're aware of this that um, we don't pay attention to too much. So you guys just play um Yeah, I'm gonna go too much to about that you gotta just play through and just let your let your talent take over Don't let it come down to a ref decision Over here to the right Austin Ward podcast
So I mean it didn't feel like against Oregon that you guys had to blitz as much as you had doing Maybe some other games in the second half of the season Why is that what does it allow the linebackers to do when you don't have that responsibility or what what made that a successful approach on Wednesday Yeah, I think uh when you got as talented as guys we do a front with those four guys up front I mean a four-man pressure is feeling like a six-man pressure to the quarterback So you're able to drop out and be able to drop everyone else in the coverage So it makes a lot easier on our defense when the the defensive line is just taking over like that I mean It's it's tough for an offense to do anything. We got four four-man four-man rush Feel like a zero coming at you and you got everyone dropping into coverage. It's kind of just shelt over the field So I mean it's definitely makes the demons like easier for everyone else When the defense last bite like that Jim knows it talked about this a little with having so many veteran players that You could make different game plans. You don't have to just be you know pigeon hold into one thing We kept a week does it feel when you get in there and you guys start game planning like they are
Very different for every opponent for you guys at this point. Um I don't know if I'll say that I think they keep it Simple enough where guys are like confused when we're doing. I mean might Like look like that for like the quarterback. We might be giving different looks and things like that But um, I don't think it's over complicated at all But I mean that might be I might just be because we got a better defense as well So could be a little bit biased, but that's kind of the way it feels. It doesn't feel over the complicated like that I'm going to uh Joey Coppen Columbus this back How do you think it's helped you guys to put Caleb down? Dr. Morn in the box Play late late in the season and doing that seems like more how does it help you guys? Yeah, I mean, I think both our safeties have done a really good job, you know dropping down in the box again Come down faster run run support I mean, I think when you see guys coming from 12 yards and they're making tackles or two yards games It's all that's pretty impressive I mean we saw lathe and last game come from the weak side boundary hash about 10 12 yards You come down hit the dude at two yards and then hope was knock him out
So I mean both our safeties are they're super impressive in the run game So it definitely makes it the health of the defense, you know usually you're dropping the safety in usually those four yard runs Five yard runs and where they're stopping for two yard runs no yard runs So it's super impressive and helps the defense out a lot We'll go to Jeremy Birmingham The podcast So how much does the defense structure really changed since the Organtane and Indie gene or is more of a lost time but you guys just being more veteran and knowing the defense better We're as as there bit fundamental changes that have been made because it looks a lot Yeah, I mean, I think there's been some changes But I think a lot of it's been a mentality of trying to be a speed more aggressive than we're just trying to It's having an aggressive mindset. I think you've seen that when it and showed up on tape with the pressures the TFLs and things like that and I think we've gotten a lot better since like since the beginning of the year and we kind of improved on the issues
That's shown up each week because the issues are always there and I think we've improved on those really well and then obviously look I completely different team now Aggressiveness from the coaching staffs and not just Individual position coaches like For tonight's but even for my day like it's as he been a different type of leader I think he's been a great leader the whole year I think after that team of Norfolk lost we kind of Uncred down and say like hey, we're gonna we're gonna get up We're gonna start swinging and we're gonna keep swinging as hard as we can and see what happens at the end of the game And I think that's what we've been doing the past two games and it's worked out pretty well Well next to make Walker letterman row So you mentioned a great kind in earlier what stands out to you about Gunner Helm and how do you kind of take out a guy? It's such a focal point for us I think he runs great routes. He has good hands I think they've set up some really nice plays for him Like you see some of those plays where he kind of sneaks out of the protection and comes out comes out wide open
I think the biggest in that stands out probably the routes in the hands. It's super impressive for a tight end Um, you know obviously y'all always be aware where he's out on the field and there's gonna be some explosive play set up for him Any other questions here? Yeah, absolutely When you were in a nutshell, how would you describe him to someone because he he seems even more effective when he kind of gets out of the pocket or moves around and stuff So honey, what do you see when you think of him? I would say the capability of like early on the game. No him getting his routine Like some of those routine throws routine throws They run the ball and it's play action shot 50 yards. I'll feel it's like that. I think it's a super good job good job of that Being able to sell the play action pull the safety's up and then hit you down feel with a six-year-old bomb thing like that So I think that's the biggest thing that stands out to me. I'll film these are super tonic recorder back super tonic arm talent
He can get the ball out in many different ways But uh, yeah, that's probably how I put it in the nutshell. It's just super talented player You know, you can make any throw on the field um Like you said he can move around a little bit. I don't think people respect that enough his legs he can move around and extend the plays and hurt you down They really are the guy used to be in this building at least for four or five months Um, I wasn't really here with them, but The only thing is really you play you play some former players before but uh Obviously's a talented player. I think a lot of guys have a lot of respect for them. So just somebody a good match. I'm excited for it We'll go to bill or billets Columbus this batch. Adam the win will talk to you next last you know um Uh, I'm sure it's the last year on your line. We talked about do you have any idea what you can do about next year I mean you obviously can go to the NFL. Do you have any thoughts on that right now? Uh, no, I haven't thought about it all just worry about winning Scotty that's it from Columbus for sunny styles anymore on your end No more on our hand. Thank you, sonny. Thank you
Okay Into this game, you know, we knew we needed to be physical play downhill football and go at him And I think our o-line took that challenge and ran with it man and and Those dudes are are bad SOBs man and and they're they're coming downhill and and just rocking people off the ball And I think they're playing really really good football net right now. They're getting they're just continuing to get better every single week Um, I think they played really well last week. I think they played really really I haven't watched the film yet But I think they played really really well this week. Who is that? Nick love you, but the Overall, man, those guys are those guys are playing their playing their butts off and then you know I mean you let you and trade do the rest and you know We say we want to have our o-line get to and our our backs get to every single play and you know I think our o-lines getting us four and our backs are you can get us, you know, 60 plus So I mean it's it's it's good and I mean our o-lines playing at a really really high level right now and You know across the board. I'm really proud of those guys Noah Weiskov the lantern after that first half. What was the message to the team in the locker room?
I mean, I wouldn't say anything was really different man It was uh, we just came out and we said you know, it's a new half and you know every we always put the emphasis on that middle eight, you know and and and ending the first half the right way and starting the second half the right way and we didn't we did not Ex-hute the middle half in the first half but coming out of of the half time going down getting the score You know getting a couple turnovers like that was huge and that was you know our emphasis was like we've got to come out and start Fast we got to go down get a score, you know, we deferred so we get the ball first And then we got to come out and get some stops and I mean the defense played it Unbelievable game today and when you got defense it's gonna shut them down like they did I mean Hard not to win win a lot of games Andy backstrom letterman roe Talk about earlier this year there's open and then there's ohio state open How much of that factor in the red zone with a mecca and just where you at with kind of adopting that? Yeah, absolutely man. It's it one-on-one you know is they're open and uh, I said that and you know
I have all the trust in the world and those guys and I've seen them do it in practice You know it makes my job easy when I can when I can throw a ball that Mecca on that on that corner route that last touch on that that we had Wasn't a great throw honestly, you know, we we practiced that play on the hash mark You know where I had a little more time to throw that and you know We have it in the right middle so it's a little more off the hash We got I got to be a little quicker with it and I left it a little inside and Mecca made a great play and you know, it's just like things like that just giving guys chances I mean in JJ like that one-handed catches. I mean it's stupid like it's it's You know, you just let him let him go make plays man And it's and it's fun to watch it's it's easy and you know It makes makes my job makes my job pretty nice over to the right James Watkins Cleveland calm Will you play the big game before Which means you played in games before big games before trapped games something to say What do you think you learn about a team in these kind of moments and what did you learn today? Yeah, we we said this coming into this game, you know We were gonna learn about this thing. We're gonna learn a lot about this team and our toughness
And our you know our ability to you know block out the noise and go down and get to work And you know, we knew we had a big one coming up this week But we knew that this was a big one too And I think our ability to just come out there and and play some smash-mouthing football a little bit You know, I think we started well, you know the first quarter we only had one drive It was 14 plays and we went down scored and you know the second quarter, you know, just You know two turnovers a turnover on downs You know we beat ourselves, you know, it's it's never you know the other team beating us is us beating ourselves But you know, it's all about how you respond and we came back and we did a great job So you're I'm proud of the way that we played, but you know, we got a big one coming up next week So I'm excited if we can start to wrap up with Donovan Jackson in the back Please we got two more questions for Will Howard upfront bill Rabinoets Columbus this batch Everyone is pointing to this early game all season. I was out to test how well prepared are you guys? I think confidence wise we feel great You know, we've we've continued to iron things out and get better every single week
And I think that's true. I think we've learned a lot about ourselves and about this team You know, I think going into this game, you know, we know that it's it's a big one And you know, I haven't really looked at it yet. We knew that this Iowa team was going to be a good team So I mean, we you know, I looked at it a little bit, you know, on the by-week and I started checking them out See in you know, what they're about and you know, I'm excited man. It's gonna be it's gonna be a good challenge You know played against Dylan a couple times. He's a great player You know, their defense is good. You know, I know Dan coach landing is a you know a good coach And he's gonna have them ready so excited to get home now and start watching some film and get ready for these guys and final questions for Will Tim May letterman role Yeah, just quick. Oh, well The way the first half ended for you There you know my log going hey, I'm better than that. I mean you know, I mean Absolutely, just get straight down I guess it half time and then number two someone get another question You and Dylan gave you know Two guys from the big club not going against each other and big big pinch show. Yeah, just where does that mean to you? Yeah, man, it'll be fun
You know going into that going into half time. Yeah, I was uh, I was yeah, I was I was I was pissed at myself You know because I feel like it's uncharacteristic, you know Putting the ball in harm's way like that. You know, I want to be safe at the ball in my decision-making I'd like to hang my hat on that and you know, it's just like But at the end of the day man like you just got to flush it and move on You can't dwell on it too long in the moment. You know, we'll go back right now and I'll go watch the film and Gonna, you know, be critical as critical as possible and say, you know, you can't do this. You know, it got to be better Um, but in the moment like it's very very very important to just Move on and brush it off And then yeah going in and next week, you know with Dylan man I actually in 2022 we played at Oklahoma and I was ageing with still plans So I never actually have got to play against Dylan, but I know him. He's a good dude man And you know, I got one of my one of my boys from from case states one of their safes Excited to go out there. It's gonna be a fun game Well, thank you very much. Thank y'all go books You know go up in the ball, so it's fun to play with guys like that and you know, just open the office as I heard too
So it's a lot fun What's the answer to the struggles in the rhythm of the first off? Yeah, I think we just need to clean up some little things. I mean It's one of two things every time so we definitely get it figured that out and clean it up as we go I Yeah, I mean he's got to stay steady. I mean we know we're capable of Still confident what we can do and we stay confident First day is first day is talked about you know the versatile you can want to see all over the field But especially with the tight ends. Yeah, sound fun as it being what's a light bean part of an office that you know Has you to do so many different things have so many different formations and things like that. Yeah, no, it's fine I mean rolling it out with those guys a lot of fun As my It's been fun to do a lot of different things and it's a lot of new things that you know Just you see a lot better Excited about that
Yeah, I think I've become a lot better. I mean the audiences guys today are defense and some real these stuff You have no option but will that set up? It's been fun when you're out there I Oh, yeah, I mean we have four games trash kind of so we have a lot of To make and nothing works out about that By weeks They you said When you're up for a JJ does it amazing you some of the things that he does? Yeah, I mean you see it every day in fact is time So honestly now now I see it Like it doesn't really make me as much because you see every day But yeah, you do the special talent. You have a chance in certain plays we get to do that and then allowing certain guys and certain blitzes to really mess up the whether quarterback is thinking So it allows us to have more pressure and be able to allow us to do more moves at the time because it makes it Offense confused that what we're doing so about allowing putting blitzes in there really mixes up the patch for us for us
And allow us to get sad Tim Mayn, under the role. Yeah, with that said like for example, S-39 against Against E-M-A-L-E-A-V. I said it right. I think But but against he was quite elusive and stuff was that a good I don't know prep for this week. I mean because Dylan gave us a little bit different scram where he still gets the job done Oh, yeah, that was definitely good to have because like I said, I mean all the quarterbacks were very mobile and being Be able to have more experience versus mobile quarterbacks helps us obviously You know just help us home and learn from our will we have and how don't go into the hole and how to Scrambo is what we can learn from those crampals and we go from that game in the past game We played against Oregon just learning learning the quarterbacks tendencies and when they like to run Where they like to run and everybody helps us out really closing the court going to cage and facing pocketball Is there a fine line between being aggressive? But also being wary this guy can slip or you know slip away You're saying what I'm saying timing. Yeah, you can't just go Right. I mean go ahead. I'm sorry. Yeah, he's definitely a quarterback and then guess I The pocket so I mean being he's definitely a threat. He's a man guy in offense. He runs the show
So I mean be able to stop him and contain him really slows the offense down So be able to cage the pocket and be able to slow him down and make him make more decisions on the run and moving around They may help us Go ahead and one more him. I'm sorry. Well, no, I didn't want to ask about their center their center What I impressed with you with him last time you guys played he seemed to have a pretty good game You know, and he's kind of a kind of You know actually a tough guy to move out of there and stuff that it looks like I mean what's your impression of him? He's definitely one of the better centers in the conference I mean he's a really good guy. I mean being there be there be there be there the size and be able to move the way he can It's really hard to get around him at times But he's definitely having the game plan and working against and working to tend to see that he has some people work against that It really helps that helps me Real middle Stephen Leonard College football Yeah, it kind of piggybacking on that how much of it was there offensive line being a strength that are team versus Dylan Gabriel being able to escape and the lack of pressures that we had on our defense
Oh, yeah, I mean when you got a good offensive line I mean it makes it even better for a quarterback, you know Be under the rollout to know that your alarm is gonna help you protect you when you're in the pocket So I mean it makes it easier for throws and it makes it harder for us Honestly for having a good offensive line So I mean like I said before just being able to attack the offensive line attack the weaknesses and be able to go after Make it harder for the quarterback. He's harder for them a role Uh, for the right Andrew Gillis believe in dot com. What's the challenge similar to Tim's question and you know Play a team like this that runs the level of RPOs that they do So you how do you stay true and be aggressive and force the issue where you know Oh, yeah, like I said just putting pressure on him mean we'd be able to get it get back there I mean we got a lot of different plays that can help us get back to our passer and plan and plan to their tendencies You know a lot of times they have the RPO the RPO helps them out. It means you get the ball out fast I mean, I mean things like Jackson and JTB and get their hands up knock the ball down crazy stream them out of pressure for the quarterback when you got hands in face all times And final questions builder Benowicz Columbus dispatch. We've asked about Dylan Gabriel and the receivers
They're not one dimensional. They were good running back in Jordan James What makes him special and what's the challenge for you guys? Well, I think he's definitely one of the better running backs on the conference of well I mean just how hard he runs is it's hard to bring him down at time So I mean as a front pro we probably stopping around that's the first thing we're gonna do is we go on the game I mean past rushing is good and all but we can't stop the run I mean they're gonna run the ball there and throw all the time so All the time we have to figure out how we're gonna stop him I'm gonna run the ball and then we're gonna take him down So I mean it's our job as a front pro to go on there and stop the run We're gonna make him one dimensional as we go out there So I mean if you get up there every time I say we go out there It means we're gonna get we're not gonna allow him to get in the yards. Let him to get going We're gonna stop and we're gonna make him throw the ball When I JT was up. You asked him about how to compare contrast him and Jack is It's personalities with what's your take on that? How different are they as just personalities? I definitely think Jack is more outgoing. I mean the guy is me Like the light that shines around me and everybody goes around him and everybody loves him
Outgoing guy there come come to you shake your hand anytime of day and then JT's more of the glue guy I mean a lot of guys gravitate to him I mean he just has a bright smile on him all the time He's just a great guy that people like to be around and they're two good people. So it's hard to tell And I do that one more question for you Tony Irvin You guys obviously a face template didn't last me what's the key for you as a defensive one facing tempo? Oh, yeah, I mean we've been going through all week in the past two weeks. It's just getting set I mean that's the first thing you do if you're not set and mean it makes it harder to do your job So let's be able to get on the ball get set before they're lined up and set the ball is one of more important things So when we're set we're able to do our jobs at the efficiency they they can before they can do theirs It could be difficult times can you know you gotta look to the signline first you gotta get the call I mean the call has to be set down first Can't be difficult times, but that's a definitely what we've been working on the past three weeks To just get the call get a call early get set so we can go and be play faster You never find where you're like you've chased a plane to one side of the field and now it's lined up
They're gonna be heading to the other side so like you've got to just run the signline side like just to get Oh, yeah, I mean I haven't a lot a last game, you know It's hard definitely tough. I mean that's what we work on practice. Just We move as fast as we can we simulate in these things so we can get into the game It's a lot easier. So we moving around side to side run around doing extra conditioning just for moments like this Hi, thank you very much. All right. Thank you You want to try to get better every day, you know And never be satisfied uh and uh You know he He was uh very demanding, you know very demanding on us players. He's demanding on coaches uh, you know, he just uh very competitive um, you know and and I I've said this before There's just there's a lot of similarities between between these two programs and maybe the personalities are different But you know but but but but you know when I first first day I got here
First day our first staffing coach kind of talked about about us being a more tougher More physical more disciplined for all team and that's all coach and I would talk, you know, those are the things he would talk about You know and uh just having us being Being being being the toughest most disciplined team out there And and and and and that's you know, so it's like it was left here in the same thing And so and that's what we're stressing and that's what we want to be and that's what we're trying to be This year To be like that this cool. Well, yeah, I think we got it I mean, I we got to be demanding on them and we got it we got to instill the toughness and continue to instill the toughness continue to instill discipline and and uh and Just not be satisfied, you know and and and just be demanding on
What does it mean? Well, I mean, I just I just want us to get better every day and I want us to uh my my goal again is for us to To be tougher and to be more physical and and and and and to be and to be uh and to be more disciplined You know and and and really focus on those Focus on those attributes and I know if we do That that will carry over to us being successful in the field. Yeah, it's being being such a veteran How do you see the social media impact? Well, it's impacted quite a bit. Yeah, it's it's it's it's very interesting, you know, and it's it's taking me You know, I got a you know, wow to get used to all but I'm not saying I'm great on it But you're on the twitter. Yeah, but I'm on twitter and all that good stuff and so so uh, you know It's it's it's it's it's been it's been fine It's been it's it but it did it is it is having an impact on on on on on on recruiting that's for sure
Style of offense and we Well, that's a great question. I mean that was probably the biggest transition for me was was just uh, and one of the most exciting things for me was being able to be a part of this offense because coach Gundy's Offences have been the best some of the best in the country Period. I mean they've been awesome. So I wanted to be a part of it But with that it was you know, it can't just stay we were we were you know Ground in pound and we were a lot of quarterback running in some way And and but also just Taking as much time off the clock as we could so we could keep the keep the ball away from other defenses You know for other other other other offices and so just slowing down and that type of stuff So here was playing fast and getting guys to just teaching my guys to You know To get up and make the calls and get the points and that was different and so but but that's kind of where I was where I was going to
What where where I was uh, you know, or hey, I just being able to to resource Johnny and Marcus. Hey, you know How'd you guys do that? You know what what what were some of the things, you know, and and Jason Meckendood was really helpful with that as well You know, so but it's been a great transition been a great turn. How does your job in a new deal with Sean He's a quarterback One maybe more What is that What's been great with Sean? Sean's awesome. I mean, I've said Sean's got a great. He's got a vision He knows where he what he wants and he's very passionate. He's a very intense very detailed and And so you know He knows he knows exactly what where he wants this offense to go and so I'm really excited I'm really excited to get a chance to work with him and in the whole offensive staff has been awesome You know, was and in Casey and And Mac has all been great
So it's really good touch gunney talking fast about trying to recruit you can to state before and obviously this time All of those pitches like in those conversations that I did with him at those times well, I mean It was great coach gunney's uh You know He was awesome and so It just circumstances just For whatever reasons just didn't allow me to to be able to do it But but but I'm just grateful now for this opportunity. I'm just grateful. He gave me a call I'm just that's one thing I am very grateful for very very thankful for that he You know, he gave me that call. So I'm very really excited Obviously all have work to do so we're gonna keep doing that but he's a great guy Oh Yeah, you know just to try my hardest in spring obviously move in the fall can be no do my job and wherever you know You're gonna put the best five on the field at the end of the day So whatever coach bowing thinks that's just gonna be his decision
You mentioned having four offensive line coaches. How much does that help to have you know so many different brands? It definitely helps a lot You know whenever you have a question and so easy to get feedback in me Don't have to ask his coach bowing you guys dick you if you want to whoever you want to ask is just so many resources Compared to you know asher we just had we had three three guys It was just in friday and coach lean and I won over guy But it's been a lot different. I've been lacking a lot more You're able to get more you know individual instruction of having so many coaches like that I definitely said that we know we hold a lot of meetings So you know talking to a specific coaches about different things you know all them explain stuff a little different Just to be able to find one that is you know, it speaks to you in the way you like it to so you're not helpful Are you said that you changed your body a little bit since you got here? Have you felt the difference already in spring? I definitely have you know I would say I was a physical in high school But I've been a lot more physical I can tell just you know coach making the strength staff You know they help you a lot. I just exposure and all that so I appreciate the strength stuff a lot
So coach they asked all the seniors before we came in they asked if they were okay for us To come with the playoffs with them and they all just give it a green light They wanted us to experience that for the next time we're in the playoffs so we can see that I think that's helped tremendously I think I made this mature just being around those guys and knowing what to do when we do get to that place Are there ways that you've already seen that fit on? I definitely can say you know just maturity wise especially from this class I think we all just came in a little bit maybe immature but we've definitely grown throughout that process Just see the way a guy like daughter of interaction stepped up for obviously once you're how inspiring is that for you? It's very inspiring you know me and Donnie were pretty close like they talked to him a lot So you know just seeing him move from guard to tackle and just make such a huge jump in that little time was just really cool to watch Carter the Especially the three primary coaches you're working on do they all speak the same language if you follow my driv I mean, yeah, who do you listen to most I guess in those kind of situations? Um, you know they're all from different places so was at first I think it was a little hard for them to mention the one that will link open now they've got it down packed They're all at the same exact thing so that's been helping a lot
Obviously they can explain stuff a little different if you like them too, but they've been they've been doing a good job of keeping everything together and Cush Dick in pers in particular. What's he brought? What's he brought to you? What what are some tidbits or you know things he's brought it open your eyes a little bit Um, just let a little older place dog. I say he's not like too fancy on all the technique stuff So I like just how straightforward he is with all the technique stuff for sure. It's very straightforward I know you know loop pretty well both being from Toledo. How have you just seen loop bro here so far going into this year? I think um, I've been watching him for a while you know, I've known him like you said But I've just seen him grow as a leader has been really cool Just seeing him a while back, you know, think all the software he's just seen you we always play to each other But seeing him move into that that leader role has been really cool to see Just always talking to the younger guys then encouraging us you know Tell us what we need to do and not only the younger guys but the other guys just encourage us as a whole And what does this story mean to you? I mean obviously this time a year ago he wasn't even sure where he was gonna Fit in or whatever now of sudden especially through the playoffs he was a force
I mean, what does it just tell you about perseverance but also a season? I think it really is just never give up. I mean obviously you might not start the first game Maybe not even the second game, but you can always make an impact if you really that's your desire Yeah I would say Austin and Luke a lot you know, I talked to him for your office especially about technique stuff Also been playing Little different places. So he's gonna help me a lot of my small technique things just what to do for sure Is it the small stuff that is a big adjustment from playing top? Is that really what kind of Yeah, it's definitely the smaller stuff. Just like you know hand protection stuff like that nothing to Adirastate so it's it's been good the treasure has been too crazy I heard exactly what positions have been repaid only a left tackle. Yeah, so far you feel pretty comfortable there I feel very comfortable. Yes, these are grown men. You're going to get kinyata and cadena like 22-23 years old
Yeah, yeah, obviously that's a lot different than the highest-go-year playing what 16-17 most 18 So it hasn't been a lot different. I first co-practice were my best But I definitely adjusted a pretty well this spring It's been really good, you know, obviously we got all the fresh matter really good relationship with coach fry You know Men seeing him leave was actually a little hard, but we all kept our minds open With coach born and we're liking him a lot Then developing relationships with him and he's been really good to us so far Good. All right, sir. Thank you. Thank you guys in the room Uh, I mean, I'm not sure it's probably something you got to ask him But you know germines played with a lot of great guys throughout his career. He's seen a lot of all the talent you can see in the world Um, but I don't know if he's ever in all but I mean Oh, oh yeah, I mean, I'm not surprised at anything he does now like I've seen him. So we were nine years old
So anything he does any one hand catch. I've seen I'm not surprised with anything he does When he was nine, but you know this is not a this is something special. We've been met maybe at nine. Oh, yeah, I mean Coaches were coming up to us complaining that we we weren't nine years old like can we can we get their IDs and stuff like Um, so I mean, I mean, there's definitely some footage. I we got to go find but the plays we used to make when we were younger and just to see where he is now is amazing It seems very unaffected by all of the starter. Yeah. How does how that happened? Uh, I think how he was raised Um, he's just he's very level-headed. He knows His goals and what he wants to get done in life and this is just one step of the way for him Can I throw it back to Texas for a couple questions on zoom Scotty Yes, sir. We're gonna start with the farm from cleavon.com go ahead Brain and I want to go back to what you were talking about with with coach day Earlier, you know, whenever he talks about this team success
He says all the credit goes through players that seems like the players think that he deserves some of the credit How how big how influential I see been you know in the turnaround you guys have had these last few weeks Oh, he's been huge man Coming here after that team of north was you know Heartbreaking of course, but we came in here. We had a leadership meeting and he was in here I mean, and then we had a team meeting after that um Hearing the stuff he had to say and we had to say going back and forth um, we just we knew We we have his back no matter what I mean there's a lot of stuff said about him and his family and stuff like that But hey here we're a brotherhood and we're a family and We just we gonna stand by him no matter what Our next question is gonna come from Dan hope Dan go ahead Brandon, I mean, I'm sure you came in here to Ohio State thinking you'd probably be starting here in your second year But it seems like you really embraced the growth process just what's kind of that process been like for you Have kind of embracing your role this season and continuing to develop. Yeah
It life things doesn't go the way you exactly planted to and that's just it happened um You know Things happened to Mecca last year that allowed him to come back and that allowed me to learn more And that's just how I see it makes me a better football player for the future um So yeah, I mean, yeah, let's see Three more on zoom next one's gonna come from Stefan um means Go ahead Stephen but that's darn yeah, you're good Brandon there are a lot of clips of you this year where You're super super excited after a block And kind of showing your emotion there. What about blocking do you love so much as a receiver? Just being able to hit another guy with all my all my power as hard as I can Without any getting any consequences Except if except if you hold of course, but um
Yeah, just bringing that power. I mean, I heard some of the defensive guys telling me yesterday They were like wow hate to go against you. So knowing that from the defensive guys Um, so I know what the other defensive guys are thinking like Just keep bringing it so that they they're not gonna like it for four quarters. That's my mindset Next question's gonna come from Danny Davis Danny go ahead Hey, Brandon um what are your impressions of these Texas defensive backs and this kind of we've seen from them On film so far Yeah, the last couple days we watched them um their fast team They don't give up many big plays down field um They're aggressive, but I actually know some of the the DB's they have uh that corner there I might play with them. Oh, well, I played with mullick Muhammad at SFE So I might know him a little bit and um We have a watching them their fast team their physical. They're disciplined But we just got to get the job done Give any mullick stories or any
What do you think you want to be giving me mullick stories or anything you remember about playing with them? Oh Yeah, but I'm not gonna say them here uh Yeah, what's this keep that? Our final question's gonna come from Kurt Bulls Kurt go ahead Hey, Brandon One of the issues Texas has had the second half of the year is it's finishing and What if you can speak to And they had a trouble obviously in the peach bowl, you know, blew a 16-point leak And you talk about finishing and having a killer instinct and and you guys obviously seem to have that now Yeah, um, I think that starts to start it in um offseason training at fall camp We always say go plus two as if you're doing a 10-yard pro shuttle to uh You have to go plus two throughout the line and that's just finishing up as well and then Fall camp we had these long two-and-a-half hour practices or whatnot and then we came out and we had to do these Finisher as we call them ask for games late in the year like this and we um
I think coach day has a grit did a great job preparing all of us for these moments and Yeah, we just were ready to go We have time for just a couple more questions and clumpets so we can wrap up with our other two guys Bill Landis kinks in the north So maybe on the second touchdown run It seemed like you took two players out of the play First with your release and then with the guy you actually walked is that is that how it's designed? There's just was lucky to the guy decided to take off inside of the release um It's actually designed for me to buck the safety and lead the corner 101 with the running back Um, but I was surprised the corner actually came in so far in my lease. I think he thought it was a pass um But I think he was edge of the defense if you if you go watch that play But I don't know I I don't really know why he came in so far, but it helped out for us And I made my block and cherry on score
As if you're gonna go pass you can definitely um every little detail matters and then type of plays we were in a red zone there So we say every yard matters is two yards Um, so the block I made is just a Testament to cow coach hardlines prep prep me throughout the week to make that block So yeah and final question joy conference Brandon will and then this has been some of the balls equally um and some of Especially the way you guys have opened games. What do you think is this clip for you guys and for him and watching those buds? Um a lot more confidence. I say throughout the year um We were always there's offense. We had we didn't know we didn't quite know our identity And now slowly but surely I think we found that and we're gonna keep on rolling and um he's made some great throws and Yeah Yeah, Brandon there've been opportunities for you to play a huge role on offense and you know
The number of plays you play in game can differ from one week to the next But the opportunity is coming sooner rather than later for you to be in every down player Just one of the things you need to do in your game to take it from where it is now to be in every down guy um I think there's a lot of things I could work on in my game um I would say Continuant to be football smart my IQ just knowing what the defense is gonna do before they do it Um about routes always can get better my hands always can get better staying in the jug machine um Work at the keep on top of it. Don't get don't get satisfied with anything I do and Don't don't get too big don't get too low don't get too high to don't get too low. It's what they say Yeah You feel like a guy that the people follow it seems like just in your mind even the just second your guy that you're kind of working toward being kind of a leadership type guy Yeah, um I got a To have guys that will take that role. Yeah, um it's a great feeling Of course the no guys are watching what you do and listen to what you do um
But I just feel like we we do that with a lot of players here and not just myself, but um The leadership we have on this team is like no other and that that's why we got so far I think Brandon thank you very much Yeah, I mean I he wasn't out here practicing last year You know, so the first time that he was out here running around the field was in December when he came up for Um, practice as an early and roly or jane were in every that was um, so I think there's a little bit of anage there Just because he did get to see practice before but I again I think that you you do have some understanding and awareness of the offense and maybe it's not the first time You hear about the formations, but to be able to go and apply that to the field. I mean that takes a lot of work So there is there is a slight advantage there just from how much you use around the program But I'm not sure if you know in the meeting room or on the field My which which one affects more ultimately, you know, we're judged based on what we do on the field and our goals to go out there and execute
How do you guys show that they have the toughest guys on the team when they get the touch? Yeah Uh, we talk about it all the time So if we want to show where the toughest guys on the team, you know, we can do that by showing where the hardest working guys on the team Um, we can show that we're the mentally toughest guys on the team We can make sure that we don't ever get too high or too low and we you know Play with passion and emotion With without letting that emotion and passion play with us and affect us and you know We talk a lot in the quarterback room about moving on to the next most important thing So if I have you know a play where You know, maybe I made the wrong read or or screwed something up, you know I've got you know about a half a second right to kind of be bummed out about it Right, but I've got to learn from and I got to move on to the next most important thing because so many guys let that first play affect the next play So we're really working to continue to grow from that um, but as far as you know showing that we're tough I even sell our guys that hey if I'm I don't know lost in cerebell and I'm watching film and I see in the back of that film that
Julian is up or Tavian is up But Lincoln and the opposite of Julian and Tavian are standing in the back doing a mental rep Like that gives me confidence if I'm Austin that those guys One understand what they're doing in two are committed to get better right and are gonna be in position to be tough And we need to be tough so like little things like that Um or something that we're constantly working on to show that will be in that position Yeah, um, you know, I've definitely seen a lot of growth from getting in here in June last year and To what we see about now You know, it's just a full year of understanding the offense a full year of getting a feel for what we're trying to do And what we're trying to accomplish and you know just the this all my new details about where my eyes need to be How I can tie my feet in with my eyes how I can make sure that you know I'm not just throwing the ball to the right receiver because that's for my red dictated But I'm also throwing it at the right time and I'm you know I have accuracy within that accuracy that I just displayed by putting it on the right shoulder right or the right
You know to offset our receiver and throw them away from a defender or whatever that may look like So that's that's what I'm excited because you're starting to see more more of that from Lincoln As as we've getting into the you know two practices and we've only had two practices, but um You know just that growth that I don't think is a growth that happened over two practices growth that happened from the time we got here And I got here in June through through right now and that's a success He said no Recall that coach in three years and three like all there's in three years can that be like an advantage for him like Understanding different concepts different reads having to see things through different languages because he's had so many different voices as Yeah, I mean he said he's had different quarterback coaches, but the reality is it's been the same past game. It's been the same system so It's not like we changed the way we read a play based on who the quarterback coach was before we made mistakes like tweaks Right or adjustments or you know I had a new concept in her too
But I think what Lincoln can get from having those three different quarterback coaches is maybe just three different slightly different perspectives Where the message is still the same So maybe it's just a slightly different delivery of the same message and I think that can definitely be a vanish Because he still knows you know on this concept. This is where my read is But maybe he heard it a different way over the last three years um and I guess could be an advantage Is it a lot of questions if you are He's quarterbacks and they're supposed to be the toughest guy first guy the only last guy to me But they're all trying to do that. How do you then Separate yourself as one of those guys given they're all trying to Just try to do the same things Yeah, you know, I think The ultimately right is Can I sustain it? Can I be the guy that does it most consistently? I think every single one of them what I know every single one of them side that quote by coach day Which you know, it's pretty awesome. It's it's so real It's who we have to be we've got to be the toughest guys in the building. We've got to be the hardest working guys in the building
so It's easy to go ahead and you know do that and be that guy You know the next day after seeing that quote can I continue to be that guy when we're in practice 11 of spring ball We're in summer and we're going through workouts with coach Mick And it's June 17th, you know, can I be that guy with that consistency All the way up through fall camp it into moving on into next year and I think That you know, anyone can do something just wants, you know What can I be the guy that can do with consistency and if you look at anyone that's doing anything great It's been because of their consistency They're doing all the traits where does can't you be the quarterback that Ohio state Yeah, I think you know all these guys were a lot of that was done in the recruitment process I'm confident all three of them can be the guy to say I think that you know those guys are already kind of check that box So you know now it's just a matter of who goes out as in the job
And again, we are so far away from that point But you know when we're in when we're recruiting a guy We we try to figure all that stuff out. We're gathering as much data as we possibly can to learn about the person and to To understand their mental makeup and to make sure that they're a fit It's pretty cool up in the quarterback room. We've got pictures of all the Great Ohio State quarterbacks up on the wall And you know you go through and take a look at those guys and You know, it's it's just pretty neat But above all you can talk about some of the different guys mental makeup and what made them different And so how do we find those guys and bring them in and recruiting and so we get to the point like we are now Where you feel really confident about all three of those guys that they are you know mentally tough enough and Can be at that point or they can't be that guy. What do you think they learned the most from From Will and in the job he did last year overall You know close to that. Yeah, I mean like where do I start? You know will When it came to intangibles was you know, I haven't been I can't say I've been doing this for 35 years or anything crazy like that, but
Was by far the best I've ever seen to it And just as far as what he did the best, you know I think it just having is such a complete understanding of the offense You know from the run game to the past game to the protections Just understanding you know the ins and outs and the little details and everybody's job and where you know certain concepts or Protections or playstyles were weak and how to Adjust them if we were going to see something that made us weak there You know and having that total command because I think you know a big part of trust Is showing that you know, I'm competent and and I understand and so we'll build that trust in his teammates By showing that you know, he's extremely competent You know he understood everything and all the ins and outs and you can tell everybody on the field what to do And from there then he built it you know grabbed on and grabbed the trust of all of his teammates And then he could start to lead So you know the biggest thing it's it's tough to say
But I think that everything that he did was kind of built off this total understanding of what we were trying to do offensively Billy thank you very much To go on with Sean and most of them how much pressure is on the state fans to perform to the high level of respect and Right, I would say that um last year was You know, we we excelled in certain things, but we're also Trying to get back to where we were in in the past so we got some great additions and we're excited for that Ultimately it's to use some of these guys to be the number one defense In the league and that's always going to be the goal So whatever we can do to utilize all the different talent that we have on this team to to be the best in players of team To build the best chemistry that we got. Yeah, that's what we're going to do It's hands out about this offense Just early this early in the game Yeah, we're not used to going against the normal offense. I have been the past three years
So it's been a lot more moving moving pieces Definitely have to use your eyes pretty well because if not then somebody's going to be open But I like what they're doing. I'm very excited for it I just know it's making our defense a little bit better because we're having to do different things not just the normal offense we've been used to I was gonna say just because every other team has some variations of that one in this game Is that kind of do you think that kind of benefit you because you've seen that more than person? I would say so I mean as the the league is changed over time. I think they Revert to certain offenses that are that do well in certain systems I would say we're taking maybe a little bit pieces from other offense that we we see to do well So I like what we're doing. I mean, I don't know as much as some of these quarterbacks that we have on the team some of the offensive players But I just know it's tough to go against Low second number last year, but still one of the top two school in defense. What are you guys really to finish?
Yeah, I would just say place, you know, heavy emphasis in practice. It's always gonna start in practice with getting after The quarterback not touching him in practice, but you know making some good moves and and I would just say rush rush more I mean, there's so much that goes into it goes with the coverage Everybody works together. I would say that we had We had great numbers But we do we are trying to get that number up But the ultimate goal is always gonna be the ball getting the ball Taking it away getting off the field We're putting our offense out there on the field and we're staying off that means that we're doing a good job And you're already asked about it for my competition stand point But from my collective standpoint, having new wins tomorrow, we're gonna be able to go to the field What kind of a tree-o can that do for a defense? And this guy's a limit with this group. I do believe we have one of the most talented linebacker core groups and in the league So um just excited what we're gonna be able to do out there on the field I think we all compliment each other super well bigger guys that are explosive
So I'm excited for it emojis Recently, but yeah, it's there If you see from sunny this off season moving into Um, he's really stepped up as our like later of the defense. I mean he's You know being in his room. I really get to see how he operates every day like he doesn't take a single rep off He's he's not just like the most vocal leader, but he's also like He leaks by example like he is he is one of the biggest fascist strong students We have but he's also the hardest working dude. We have like he's he's never skipping out on recovery You know watching film literally everything. He's you know, he he represents what a buck I feel my players should be and Just learning from him every day. I just it's helped me in time Uh, just every day. I mean he's pretty he's pretty athletic um he knows what he's doing to He's he's he's a savvy football player Um, and so it's good having him and the locker right next to me and us just talking ball every day
You know how he could have done this better and I could have done this better It's just making each other better and we're we're having fun out there and flying around I mean it's awesome having him because like He unders he really does understand it. I would say he understands avoid the most guys like he was captain In all American here, you know, like the stuff even he's doing today like every day. He'll show some sort of you know Every single week we're going through camp every day. He's going. He's posting a picture of every Um all American linebacker we've had when we got to learn about him Like not just the brotherhood we have here, but the past brotherhood So we learn new new all-American linebacker every week and we got to learn what he did for the bug guys and what he didn't We and stuff like that and so I think it's helped a lot and then you know he's having the young guys learn uh the fight song and
Pop quiz and stuff so it's great. We're having a lot of fun I helps a time because heat I mean like when you walk in the linebacker room You just Like when I walked in I was like man this brotherhood is you know real like and I have older guys helping me When I got here because we had a we had a pretty old team last year and they brought me in and I and I came in on a boom And you know, I didn't know how I was gonna go and they were they were all cheering me on even though like I was hurting the Way room on getting cheered on in competitions and stuff like that guys like they know your name You know really Yeah, it's it's helped a lot and so I think like this in this past year is really helped me you know bringing the young guys You know help with them and stuff like that. We're super tight as a linebacker unit So it's it's been great. Who's this week's all-American? This week's all-American we we had today was a pepper Johnson So number 98 it was a he's a he was a baller. So we've had we've had one every day like
We've had different guys. So um We had spielman yesterday. So it's just someone new every day and it's it's fun. Did you get here? Yeah, Lauren isa's a lot of stories about them which which is some funny stories He hasn't posted his yet Eventually I think you will so I think I mean I think all of them they're just There's like there's so many that have come through here and I think it helps like there's a standard like you play linebacker here Like the gold should be the best linebacker unit in the country Um across the board and have the best linebackers And so I think that's really set a standard for us. Wait, does it matter to you and going out our You're getting it's truck Been there done that. I mean at the highest level how much does it enhance what he's telling yeah 100% I mean it It validates a lot of stuff he says and I think uh That's one of the main reasons I I liked him so much is that he's not only our personal relationship is great
But like he knows everything about the game and I'm learning so much every single day and Like you can't you can't find a coach who doesn't know more about linebacker than he does and he's been through every situation He knows you know when the offense does this play what's You know what's what's hard for the linebacker on that play and he understands it You know finds ways to help us you know get through those plays and stuff like that And then a lot I was I feel like it was one of my biggest comp accomplishments and you know in my life at tomorrow Obviously think that gold one day to be a captain here But feel like you know being an iron buck I have it a big big off season or getting bigger and stronger I think you just meant a lot because our teammates vote on it too and so just knowing that like Every day when we do those one-on-one competitions and lean guys people are noticing that I was given everything I had So it hadn't been a lot the tough coach make and all been choose me to do an iron buck When the class of this off season did you start you kind of visualize some goals that you had?
And was that one of them? Yeah, I mean, I think right right off the bat right when the last season ended, you know, my goal was to be Be a starter and iron buck guy and just taking steps every day We read a book chocolate care water and it's a lot about living in the present And so I think that's how helped all of us at time is like what can we do today? We are very best and so I think that's that's what's helped me a lot I mean, I still don't want really those We still got put the tank for us. Are you just being you the last question you did that? You know maybe we were you getting rewervers You know just being you is that you're working at the king? Yeah, I mean my parents have instilled a you know strong work ethic at me and You know not back and down for many situations and stuff like that So I think just going in you know leading and giving everything I got every day is just How happened to us great. Thank you very. I mean, we're just all excited to go out there and Okay, well anyway The fact that the way that this defense has editions on every level
Talk about chasing the people to line and the traffic there You guys have willing to second that second level and the third level Who they to go on with Sean and how much pressure is on the defense to perform to the higher level of expectation Right, I would say that um last year was You know, we we excelled in certain things, but we're also Trying to get back to where we were in the past so we got some great editions and um we're excited for that Ultimately, it's to use some of these guys to be the number one defense In the league and that's always going to be the goal So whatever we can do to utilize all the different talent that we have on this team to to be the best and play as a team and To build the best chemistry that we got that's what we're going to do What stands out about this offense just see just early this early in the game Yeah, yeah, we're not used to going against the normal offense. I have been the past three years So it's been a lot more moving moving pieces
Definitely have to use your eyes pretty well because if not then somebody's gonna be open But I like what they're doing. I'm very excited for it I just know it's making our defense a little bit better because we're having to do different things Not just the normal Offense we've been used to I would say so I mean as the the league is changed over time. I think they Revert to certain offenses that are that do well in certain systems I would say we're taking maybe a little bit pieces from other offense that we we see to do well So I like what we're doing. I mean, I don't know as much as some of these quarterbacks that we have on the team some of the offensive players, but I just know it's tough to go against Hello, second number last year, but still one of the top two scoring defenses What do you guys really need to do to finish after the quarterback? Yeah, I would just say place, you know, heavy emphasis in practice
It always is gonna start in practice with getting after The quarterback not touching him in practice, but you know making some good moves and And I would just say rush rush more I mean, there's so much that goes into it and goes with the coverage Everybody works together I would say that we had we had great numbers But we do we are trying to get that number up, but the ultimate goal is always going to be the ball Getting the ball Taking it away getting off the field We're putting our offense out there on the field and more staying off that means that we're doing a good job And you're already asked about it from a competition standpoint before my collective standpoint Having you wins a marga and we're gonna go a little few What kind of a trio can that do for a defense? And this guy's a limit with this group. I do believe we have one of the most talented Lombacker core groups and in the league So um just excited what we're gonna be able to do out there on the field I think we all compliment each other super well bigger guys that are explosive So I'm excited for it
It's really just our family versus their family and we just got a person beard and we got to win the games and get back to the net I was trying to line The pote art line was saying that part Alan Brandon have really been leaders and we're going to talk about it What if how have they both been leaders for you and me every young see? They've been leaders just in multiple ways whether our column We're in there in the film room together on the jugs Uh, I'm asking them about this route. How I could run it better I'm asking them how I run this route on this play just many different things I feel like those guys They're like big brothers and all that Dennis help me I'll value For sure because they're they're first round pit guys So I feel like just being in a room with those guys and if you're able to thrive with those guys, you know, some's going good for you What are your impressions of that What are your impressions of that? What have you kind of known about him and what are your impressions of that?
Uh, I had a I always had a good relationship with Tavian He recruited me hard to come here. So I feel like we always talked and He came here and he's been doing this thing. They've all been doing their thing and Julian saying he's another cally kiss So I had a little relationship with him too. So good to see julian link and take me all doing real good In terms of evolution I just really just everything I feel like you can never be too perfect and I feel like you just gotta keep doing your job So I said maybe just Uh, just showing up more and just doing my job to the tee High school in high school I had a A five star corner DJ DJ on Lee. He's at Alabama. So I always had good work with corner So I feel like it's just a lot. I'm going against a lot of good guys now and say that it's just being one on one that practice with DJ So it's real good for sure Does it take more courage to play with slot?
Said again, please take more courage to play with slot. What do you mean by that? Because there's more stuff But I think there's bigger hinders inside you have to have a You gotta be aware of it, but it doesn't make more courage to do that Um, I guess you can say that I feel like I just always play slot and I feel like that's what I've been better at so I feel like Um, I feel like it's just what I have to do to be on the sock no matter who's in front of me how big he is How strong he is I feel like if I got in the same way I gotta do it I'm looking around. I remember my first day. I'm looking around I'm looking at July Then then I see uh Jeremiah crazy. I'm just looking around everybody KJ Ken and Kirin get off the bar. I'm okay like this this is the real deal For sure. How do you how do you take that only fat moment and then go from Um I really just take that and I just uh I just think I was a challenge. I okay like we got all these attributes
They got all these things but um can they get past me though can they beat you though? So every day just working on that Just getting better and better. Have you used to get all the strong race jumping Uh, yeah, that's my dog, you know, we came in together and just like talking To each other about the process especially when like uh coach fry left and all like you know We gonna really you mean and we just suck through it and um me and him now I just talked to him every day. That's about bullied and working on different things Because he's at the left. I'm at the right scene. Things with different point of view. So it's really how's the transition going for you I was gonna amazing. I feel every day get uh better and better Going against the best every day. So you have to be on your a game and uh gonna just do like CJ that's my play Just getting better and better and transition just not my hour Half-way from home. So this has been pretty good. You started four games last period So those those what are you kind of thinking you get with any of those members? No game. What do you think you learned? Um, I think like for my role, I think I did just enough
um, when I like as a person I am now if I was a person I feel like I would have done lay better But just going into that role um helping that's helping um in a so do we gotta do and uh feel like I did just enough But there's always I could always do There's always been a pretty good where did you see Um, what's specifically Pass pro and my first steps Working on those things and I uh, I had the lift and the power I just I was all over the place and Just every I feel like every game. I was understanding um how the game worked and um how to Attack how to be passive the how to work together as a online unit not to be by myself Um really just uh make sure I feel powerful out of my stance That was the one big thing I had to work on and especially about um my last school working on my stance from uh Making sure I can push off and like gain ground and I feel like sometimes I wasn't doing Even mentioned that he had to lose 30 pounds. They got here. Did you have to change from your body at all?
Definitely um, I was three 20 coming in and I've known I played at three 20. I feel great And then uh, they told me they wanted me to go down to three 15 and I was like nah, I want to do that I got three 15. I started running. I started. They started putting me on the meal plan. They started doing all this Oh, I see the vision Yeah, um, I definitely chose for my body my arm is definitely getting bigger weight room Um, it's been amazing. I'm growing every day. It's hard every day But I love it though like I'm getting work after practice after the weight room Cooked but I can see the results and see the games It's it what is it like you leave a place you know you're probably breaking some people's hearts back there Describe what it's like to make a move like this. Yeah, I mean And basically the midst of a college career um, what were you seeking more than anything else? Uh, it was definitely a big move What was I seeking just um
Just the development with um knowing I can I wanted to go and get some of the best dudes every day and Coming here I'll be able to do that um, just a training program in the culture here and um It's summer Minnesota. So it was definitely uh Like a easy merge You had said you were part of you hadn't really thought about Ohio State being not When the house is quickly to sort of emerge. Just one. What do you remember about just some of the room? Um, I remember coach fry call me when I hit the portal Um, he was one of the one couple first people to hit me up um I was gonna I was gonna go home anyways because I was gonna go to my mom house because I fasted at um When I hit the portal make sure I made the right decision and I was gonna go home with my family and just talk about it and My cousin and I never like um, you're already an hour and a half away. So you might as well just see what's up up there They want they show an interest and I was like You mentioned the transition from fried a Tyler Bowen just wasn't like playing for both of them so far um
I don't really know too much about coach fry, you know, just a little bit uh, but what I was in here I definitely saw like uh dudes definitely develop like I can see it on tape not necessarily like we see that practice but with coach Bowen um Um every day Just improving and he's just always telling me things uh little things I don't even notice um that I'm but I need to work on especially with coach Johnson and coach dicky uh Having those three in the room is probably the best thing ever Got some great additions and um we're excited for that Ultimately it's to use some of these guys to uh be the number one defense um in the league and that's always gonna be the goal So whatever we can do to utilize all the different talent that we have on this team to to be the best and play as a team and To build the best chemistry that we got That's what we're gonna do Just offense just early just early in the game Yeah, we're not used to going against uh the normal offense I have been the past three years so it's been a lot more uh moving moving pieces
Definitely have to use your eyes pretty well because if not then somebody's gonna be open Um, but I like what they're doing. I'm very excited for it Um, I just know it's making our defense a little bit better because we're having to do different things not just the normal offense we've been used to I would say so I mean as the the league is is changed over time. I think they Revert to certain offenses that are that do well in certain systems I would say we're taking maybe a little bit pieces from other offense that we we see to do well So I like what we're doing. I mean, I don't know as much as some of these quarterbacks that we have on the team some of the offensive players, but I just know it's tough to go against I'm low second number last year, but still one of the top two school and defense and What do you guys really need to finish after the quarterback? Yeah, I would just say place, uh, you know, heavy emphasis in practice. It always is gonna start in practice with getting after
The quarterback not not touch him in practice, but you know making some good moves and And I would just say rush rush more um, I mean there's so much that goes into it and it goes with the coverage Everybody works together. Um, I would say that we had We had great numbers But we do we are trying to get that number up But the ultimate goal is always going to be the ball getting the ball Taking it away getting off the field We're putting our offense out there on the field and we're staying off that means that we're doing a good job And you're already asked about it for my competition standpoint But from what elected standpoint having new wins amalgam will be on the field. What kind of a trio can do For a defense and this guy's a limit with this group I do believe we have one of the most talented linebacker core groups and in the league So um, just excited what we're gonna be able to do out there on the field I think we all compliment each other super well bigger guys that are explosive So I'm excited for it I Is was was was was gonna be up in the air
So I think for me just starting out. I took it something That was kind of important to me that whoever was everyone competing for that spot I wanted to create a bond with them Om because I feel like a tackle guard bond is important in terms of communication understanding Because again a left tackle is only as good as guard is and vice versa You know what I mean? So I feel like I've done a good enough job so far of starting to develop that relationship Which with each potential guy so that way as we as spot as the spot is getting you know as people started compete for that spot um Again, I feel like it's I should be able to I should be able to pop in with whoever and We should continue to keep the standard to standard if that makes sense That's my mindset first there's a guy competing for a spot And I've never spent any time with him just one on one during the summer and just taking reps before camp Hey, what's coming to facility is to xyz. Let's talk about this tape xyz then they come in and then now there's no kind of flow
So now I'm not really seeing how that how we're gonna fit together But I want to fit with as many people at left cars possible that way when the city's been made There's no new startup process. I got to start over my process with this guy. It's kind of already been flown if that makes sense What is what is the problem mindset to succeed? I think that the mindset for me as always has been um that Or when I win my a one-on-one the ball goes down the field You know what I mean? Um, so and I think that's what I'm most excited about just being a left tackle is that Especially with the protections that are a little bit A longer plays where the left tackle tends to be A one-on-one or my My the plays I tend to love the most because kind of like halfway through the play We're lacking them up and just know that he can't go anywhere. Just like a smile. But you're like oh dude Ball's gone You know what I mean like balls gone and it's gonna be a touchdowns gonna be a huge gain just um
So I think for me that's kind of the mindset you kind of have to have the left tackle spas that as soon as I win like My rep we're going down the field so um That's just a mindset I have in terms of how well I have to prepare Honestly, I'll say that mindset kind of came from college Again, obviously I played with a lot of great guys in college, you know, I'm glad we have all those guys here You know what I mean? To throw the ball to as well just because against one of those things like with CJ You just again a left tackle my mind so it's just Well, that's CJ just do his thing and that's my thing I want Kyler to be able to do his thing. Don't worry about whoever's over here. Just do your thing That's why you're here and just throw at the Marvin and you know, it will be and will be good You know what I mean? So that's something excited about and I think all that starts because of what we do on the line So when I think just not just myself but the entire room takes pride in
Hey like when we do our job up front. That's where everything else goes So let these guys we have with the ball in her hands Do all that all that magic we just got to Just do our job just contain it when you're one-on-one, you know Where you are in a just playing that that spot mean something special just because of the the history of that position and You know just of all the great sort of play left tackle. I mean you ever think about just The past and they you know the people the players before you who were in that spot and did great things Yeah, I mean again. I feel like just from um just as a young guy in a game. I of course try to I like to watch the the greats the game. I like to watch guys like um A weight worth of course, you know A willy Anderson, you know, he played on the right side, but again um, I think continuing to watch the greats that played the game just contain the dominate for those guys from me be able to talk to them again to be able to Learn from their store in their journey and how they developed of course I understand I want to create a
I want my game to be able to be like there's in a way to where it's talked about In a way of like that's a guy you need to watch just to watch with You know the fight that you played with the finish that you played with and the technique you played with Because those guys played almost 20 years You know what I mean? So and again, I think that's something when you watch the guys though the legendary guys come before Yeah, you know, they're strong and they're tough guys, but you know, I don't know, but when you're like 36 37 years already probably not that's Not as strong as you used to, but that technique and just the skill set that's something that I admire You mentioned earlier about the guys going out to UCLA and kind of getting out of the heat I'm curious when you're working out here. Do you do do anything outside or do you avoid it altogether right now? I don't know. I'm always outside. I'm always outside. I'm honestly. I don't mind the heat. I love the heat And honestly for me it helps I'm off like 30 20 so I kind of warm up quickly So it's kind of nice when I warm up. I don't have to be doing like a 30 minute warm up
You know, you kind of just be outside long enough collect this And your joints are on go so um I actually I I like Going back to the players that have been in the league for a while Calvin Beach him is one of those guys It's been the league for a decade plus. What have you been able to learn from him? I think again just learning how to be a pro in terms of in terms of certain things like for example I'm a guy that when I like to train by myself. I'll just take a thousand reps of a set a thousand reps of a I reach block. I'm a rep rep rep and type pick up done a hundred times in a row perfect And some of that beach is like talking about in terms of being a pro and it I thought to me That's me being a pro is a young guy fake. I've a lot of I reps in my body so I'm going to take a lot of reps and preparation But beach is a guy where it's like it's not about necessarily the quantity in terms of it's really through the quality But but even more so he's like you know offseason you don't got to be doing something like this every single
Day, but when you do it like from your first rep even your first rep is not like you're I'm taking this rep Oh, it wasn't good because it's gonna be better on the second one like each rep even when you're by yourself is just Kind of I guess I'm a mindset. I just gave yourself 15 reps instead of doing 60 reps You know sounds like a huge difference But then you out of mind taking 60 reps from by myself and there's nobody does waiting around on me and I'm by myself. I can I'll take my time and I'll do that. But just being like I'm gonna do 15 Perfect reps and I'm just gonna slow down and take all my time Stuff like that that way your body. I way you're not you're not you're not doing too much before Can't you know Many of the guys that left guard in the mix were here last year except for ever Mm-hmm. How is that relationship with all throughout Yeah, I mean, so honestly, I like that that's my guy. We like to compete We've been competing in the weight room since day one in terms of just like what we consider like athletic
Competitions so like even in the weight room. I'm at the very end of the week When we're done lifting. I'll talk to Evan. I bet now you're standing. We'll just do some sort of competition Whether it's grip or whether it's jump or where it's pull-ups or something And I don't let him wave until I beat him in these two things Like so if we do if we do a jump thing and like I always thought was the best kind of at the most height when I jumped out of O line I could dominate anybody and that but he beat me in that Surprising size art and then we're hopping on the bike And then we did this bike thing. I beat him on a bike. My right now. We don't pull up so I beat him on a personal kid Now we can leave We just have that that in words is always just competing and um and then again Obviously, you know, he wasn't on the team with us Last year by think what he brings at a table with beings of that is that he's like a plug and play guy You know, he knows he's been in no scenarios before He's played with guys like Penae when he was with Detroit So obviously just being able to talk to him and how this is how it was when I was setting with Penae
This is how it was I was saying to see Hawks these are the different things that I can do that mirror some things like in your game How you set and I'll talk to him about what I like to do in certain scenarios and how his set can sort of Match that that makes sense. So I think he adds a lot To the point to where a strength coaches like you guys got to go like yeah, you got you guys should go You know, we're not trying to we're not trying to break any rules around here Um, but you know, but it's just me and him just going and he loves it You know, so and even us starting to do that we started to get other guys in the O line that tried to hop in on our competition for fun Um, but only matters what be Evan. It's just I'm just beating you, you know So it's fun
I Couldn't pass up an opportunity to try and bump that up and go somewhere I did I I was really just watching it because I mean we played me very lost I was watching game more of this band But yeah, I mean it the things that Um, I feel like really fit my Which I was very happy to do and I'm excited years to where I feel like it's more of a
You know where I can be that pocket passer and also use my legs when I need to But you know, I feel like my But I also feel like Oh, it had a huge huge impact on um, you know, I I love my guys at K state and I have nothing bad to say about them I mean the talent here is Just just being it being around the guys and the thing that's impressed me the most about especially the receiver room is how Now much they want to work. I don't have to go out there and thank these guys go catch and they're already out here Catching on the jugs when I come out the truck They're incredibly hardworking just all across the room. We got
He was like car no and Brand in on us and obviously a mecca and all those guys like I mean That's just the that's just the ice made like there's so much talent in that room Being able to throw to guys like that makes my job a lot easier Dude he's a dude man. I haven't gotten to talk to him that month yet You know just because we've been in different groups lifting and stuff But man, he's a specimen It is a freak show I mean he is I'm excited to see him on the field I feel like the resounding thing that I heard from from these People around the league was And we need to see more High level flight and I feel like You know, I played a lot of football in my time at A.C.A. but
You know, I only had one year where I was really the true starter and where I played you know the whole year The most part I was a backup filling in and I felt like you know There's a bunch of statistics and things that they look at You know, I was on the very lowest end of like you know the amount of yards that you're supposed to throw for You know, you look at the success stories versus the failure stories And there was just so many signs of pointing to coming back and really in my heart And that was at the end of the day. I mean It was up to me. It was my gut and I felt like I just wasn't ready to leave college yet Absolutely, and I mean the biggest thing was I felt like I could come That above anything else was one of the most important things I felt like I just had more I wanted to accomplish my college and I wasn't done yet
um, and that was I think what really drew me here obviously you know Getting to the next level and you know playing in an offense like this I think it's really gonna prepare me for that next level and give me the best shot And that's all I just really stood around on the cake you know for me Yeah, I mean we definitely talked about it um, you know, it's we're all we're all here to keep eating we're all here to You know, help the fuck guys win. That's that's all we're here for and that was You know that was made evident when I you know when I came on my visit and You know the the thing that I'm the most fired up about is how good the dude in the room are And how good they've been to me, you know, I they could have you know believe me I've been in a situation where we brought him an older trans And you know they could have been you know mad and not helped me and helped me out
But I mean Devon and Lincoln the guys that have been around they they've they've really helped us a lot Especially us three new guys Um, and you know, I know I'm older and I've done things but Still just learning a new system learning you know how we do think How we you know go about our Just everything's a little different. So I'm so thankful for those guys that they've just I mean they've helped me so much just getting Getting accustomed to you know being in the Being in this building Really good dudes really good kids um and really talented too. I mean they can both spin the ball really well You know, they're they're young and they you know, they know they got a lot to learn and so do I You know, I think we're We're all trying to learn this together even you know, so do I have a little bit and we're we're hitting the ground running
It's hard to say I would probably say the draft would have been my you know, I was I was talking to some other schools of you know my amy and And USC were in there in the mix But it was really I would say here in the draft at the end of it You know, it there was a lot of different things at one end of it. It was a long hard process, but Yeah, I would say I mean When you first thought I mean nothing nothing crazy, you know, it was just Appreciate it My lighter fan There you go a little sidetrack, but uh, no, I was a question again. I'm sorry
Yeah, no, it was I mean it wasn't really anything crazy. I would say um, you know, I just You know, nothing really changed. It was really kind of you know, they they were kind of holding me off a little bit So after that game just in fairness, you know, I I was I was patient and waited my time and you know, it all it all worked out It's hard to tell I don't really know It was a World end of a process You know, I I started hearing initially they might be interested, but I hadn't really heard anything directly and then You know really I really started to feel that interest A little bit yeah, I kind of figured that I didn't know for sure But he kind of hinted at it and you know, he
His point was you know, it's it's in the best interest him and the team I was all in I completely understood you know, the decision and why he did Yeah, I mean there were a lot of a lot of things that were said You know a lot of a lot of things that you know were attractive to me about this offense and about what he kind of thought about my name And how he thought he did You know elevate me to where I wanted to be And you know, I feel like one of the biggest things was how Crow style the offensive and you know a lot of these other schools that I was looking at You know, maybe these air raid types of schools No, they got great offenses and you know, I just put up a lot of numbers But I don't know how much that was developed And playing in it in a system that Coach Ryan How much better can you prepare for the NFL and what somebody used to
And you know, it's there's just all the things pointed to You Yeah, I know I took a couple days off after the um National championship and then Shoot right after that. I'm writing writing sample Florida and I'm right to it and so um Yeah, I think why I trained I trained at um your worth performance. I think it's called the house of athlete or the compound now Um, they did they did a good job, man. They're just bringing us in and the way they went about training us man
They were they did a really good job The bucket near know I haven't Temple a temple nice. This is nice. It's a nice city man really nice Uh, the 40 to broad and avert Yeah It's really all about technique and then it's about mindset as well And so um, I say you know, it's for the love of my brother. It's for the love of Wil Howard It's for the love of the receivers who I got on the perimeter just making sure you know, um first of all my quarterback doesn't get sacked And I I told will I think it was before the first game. I was like I got your brother It's uh, I said man, I'm not gonna let you get hit you know um, and so um I don't know if I don't know if I gave up a sack. I'm not sure that um, but I know if I did I haven't given up too many And so man, it's for the love of my brothers though man making sure the ball get in their hands
You know the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed In my game uh, you can't really work on this you know in all season. I feel like it's more so you know You got to put the pads on you got to go through some inside run, you know Maybe uh, it's really just continuing run through tackles and so that's I feel like that's one of the areas in my game You know, I want to continue to get better at I feel like I did a good job of that my senior and so I just want to continue to build on that Yes, I did yes, I did Uh, I did meet with um new Orleans as well um, I never got that comparison actually um, I know I've a comrade Sure, yeah, man. I've a comrade great great back man um, just what he does and those 101 matchups he's dangerous man And he's so smooth. He's so smooth as well. I'm not gonna lie. He's smooth
Yeah Um Inside zone from stack being able to hit that thing downhill and I say the next one is probably Just an option route out of the backfield, you know, and man and man coverage. You're getting on that linebacker and so Yeah, I say the man the biggest thing is the way that he carries himself man and the way that man um, he approaches the game He comes in with the monster, you know, he's gonna work every single week, you know, every practice, you know He's working hard, you know, um even shoot it. I don't know every good I think he had every game was a good game for him man, and so but still man He always has the mentality to mindset that you know, he's gonna come in each and every day He's gonna continue to work and get better man, and so he's definitely man. He's gonna be a special player man He really is
I Man a lot of ups and downs man, it's just How you respond to adversity and I feel like that's something that God has definitely helped me to do better Is this um now have something to lean on now, you know, I remember before I met him, you know, going through those adversity I had nothing to run to you know, you can run to people, but they still can't it's not too much They can't truly help you, you know, I feel like you know, I feel like the only person that can truly help you is your relationship with Jesus Christ And so being able to lean on him, you know, he gives you in those moments where it's tough, you know, where it's low and um When you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about um he gives you he gives you that peace and comfort you know Even in those moments man, where it's so hard that you can't you can't explain. It's like man I'm going through this, but like how am I still filled with this internal joy? You know, how do I have so much peace in this situation? And so that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you and so
Um Man eight those guys have such a great mentality man. Um, I just really love their mentality. Especially um Q as well, you know, I talked about will Howard his leadership, but Quinch, I'm mentality man um That boy just yeah that boy just gifted, you know You see, you know, sometime he put in a situation where he looked like you know, he should have a negative five yards And as soon as you know it, you know, he that running through somebody step on somebody and she was just a gain of 10 and so I think Yeah, man, I think it's just like he's just gifted man to be honest. He's just gifted. You know, he's he's a big back You know, he's strong and so um, you know, he's he's able to do he's able to do those things and so um Yeah, man, it's definitely you know, I look at his game and I want to you know at the same time I want to learn from Quinch, you know, I want to look at this game is like man Where can I get better at as well? You know, that's the type of player I am. I'm always looking to get better man I'm always looking to grow as a player
What's your last experience? Julian San, oh yeah, he's gonna be a great but he's gonna be a great quarterback man He's so so accurate and so um, he's definitely man. I know coach dad's definitely going to get him right Just you know, um, container grow as a leader container grow as a player and so he's going to be really good for high state Uh He's there. I know just the quarterback position I feel like you know the quarterbacks in the past they've they've definitely been vocal and so I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to um Ask him Julian San as well. It's to be that vocal leader and lead the um and lead the offense and lead the team Shoot man, he has he has a build like JK Dobbins and um, I kind of see them, you know similar similarities in their game as well And I know JK Dobbins he was a great running back. Um, I feel like he's not talked about his none Um, a lot but man his career here you watch his highlights is is great. I remember um Before I recruit before I committed here. I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights like every
Every um one of his years here like four or five times and so man He was such a great back and um, I feel like you know when I see JK Dobbins when I see um James people I see similarities to both of their games. I feel like they play the same and so appreciate you all y'all You
You You You You so being able to go out there and just present my best self here and man it makes me a better person
I have talked to the chief Oh, it was a great conversation. So I mean these guys I mean to have a lot of good d-line talent there So having guys there I mean they feel like I could fit in very well. I mean be able to have guys Pull me in really help me out and allow the Indian really getting their fist system and fit in there and be a good player Oh, yeah, Chris Jones I mean that that guy's amazing To explode the way he did in the past few years man He's great. I mean that guy is practically unblockable. So man watching him a little bit I mean the way he uses his hands me he doesn't allow people to touch him Remember Definitely in the national championship. I mean there's no better feeling than that to be able to go out there I mean when a whole bunch of guys you grew up with for the past five years I mean see us really pull through out there hitting a couple of bumps in the road and be able to really Exert ourselves and really make it all the way to the national championship one at all man. It's a great feeling Oh, yeah since being off the team now definitely sunk in now that we really wanted national championships
Gonna sink anymore We'll be able to see the rings that we got we can get here in probably in the next month. So yeah I mean it's nice. I mean especially I mean to have the entire defense line here at the combat. I mean it's amazing I mean it's not too many times you get not too many teams of you to have that I mean it just shows the elite level that we have and that they have been at Ohio State and it just shows how great we are and how great we can be Yeah, I mean it feels like I'm kind of still playing for a house date but it's like I'm not playing anymore So it's kind of weird kind of trying to get to Justin point down stepping into a new chapter in my life So just just being relaxed calm and being just walking there with being myself Planning to work out Oh, yeah, I'll be doing the drills. That's about it We had a week a week after the game and after that I mean I flew straight to California when right to trainer
Yeah, it was definitely hard the first couple weeks and me trying to Uh, it was just definitely a slower pace. I mean being in a Ohio State everything was up temple up Be everything was hard work. I mean you're doing group activities all the time And it's hard to be able to adjust to be more of a calm Calm setting. I mean you're doing a lot of things on your own when you get in a fell It's not you're not guided anywhere. So you got to be able to adjust to that and that's probably the biggest thing I like to say that Ohio State is the best of preparing. I mean you can see Player after player going to NFL. I mean just mean one of the best players because it's the way Ohio State and the system that they had I mean they did things in an excellent way to prepare you before the league and this is it's fine great for the beauty to go to that school Yeah, it's kind of sad Um, obviously I wish we could have even just one of them build on team with me and make it even a better experience being there I mean a lot of questions they like to ask is like who would you bring with you?
I mean, of course is here anywhere in my D-Liaman and bring those guys with me So it's definitely gonna be different, but I mean there's a lot of great talent on these teams a lot of great D-Liaman in there So I love to learn from other people learn from them and be able to grow from them Yeah, of course, I mean I like to sell the time man and the Columbus being brings to Ohio State man It's the best player so being there and being still representing Piggerton I mean you got a lot of good guys still in Piggerton at still in high school We get to get there so them representing this great Oh, yeah, I think that just the leadership off the field made it so much better I mean from a guy who started off at safety moving the linebacker I mean it was a it was a natural adjustment for him You know what I mean he made no complaints to none of that I mean he just came in and worked and kind of like me like We just worked as hard as he could every single day just learn to play book I mean you can see the leadership on the field when he's out there Calling the plays with confidence and being out there
It's important to team man, it's team rally behind him You see him for my chip holds for the rest of the team Um it's interesting I mean I have no comments on it I want nothing but the best for him but being at the Penn State so I mean it's not for the best for him Who do you see emerging as a leader on that team that's the lines of my state and see you in the win? Um Keal Jackson I feel like uh this role man I've talked to him He definitely wants to step up you stepping up this year I mean he's played a good amount of time last year I feel like him being a go out there and really step up and be a leader for the team That's something you can do especially with the talent that he has What are you up to show him? Um I mean you what you got pads on stuff like that Being a especially interior guy you really don't get to see me run So being able to go out there and really run See my movement, see my men and my ability to move around Definitely surprise a couple coaches Who is the most pivotal moment that you see some for you guys? Um uh this is hard as it is to say being a loser to him I mean that was kind of like the pivotal role that really Um hit the whole team in the face and allowed us to really kick the fire in the neephens
And be able to uh play with our best abilities That we knew we had since the beginning of the season I mean as much as it hurts to lose I mean it kind of set the tone for the rest of the team And you see how we dominated teams in the playoffs So people have talked about that meeting Did your opinion of Friday change or how did it change after that meeting Knowing that he's the coach sitting there taking the best good run I mean feedback Uh yeah I mean I didn't change at all That's how it should be I mean being a coach there I mean he he's up front and he's going to tell you everything He takes criticism and that's just something that Being a man to be able to drop your ego and take criticism I mean that makes him even a better coach Not a lot of coaches can do that It makes him even better that he's here for his team He's not just trying to be the head coach He wants to be for his team so I appreciate him for that How you want to have your team as a coach Or what you're going to do in the college with a senior one Is you know how much that snow bomb is that kind of a crew for a long time Well of course I mean yeah I mean the whole goal going to a house that you want to be the team with north I mean especially with my brother he's never lost to him So it's kind of like a wagon rights at the dinner table
But I mean at the end of the day we won a national championship So I'm not getting to carry on for rest of my life You mentioned being able to surprise and be able to feel like you're a little bit overlooked Just because of how much talent you had around you on the F-Day We had a lot of good guys I mean that's what comes to being on a holiday I mean you got talent everywhere so I mean Just being able to just be myself and just be able to show people who I am And that's what I'm here for so I'm just going to do everything impossible to be able to prove To prove to people that support me right Where do you see or something? Are you going to stick it? No What do you want to be a free tag? Like what do you think you want to be a fit back? I want to be versatile I want to be like I can play a little bit of a three tag play nose guard anywhere on the inside I feel like I can play maybe even a little outside Who knows? So just being able to be a versatile I feel like playing on a high-level state We were allowed to move around a little bit And allowed me to show my talent So being able to be versatile and play anywhere allows me to be a better player in the league You mentioned kicking out of it What are people going to see for him this year?
They're going to see it more develop player I mean I feel like this year is kind of the set and stone of him being able to take over the role of being a defense and out of a high state So I feel like he has all the talents, all the skillset to be able to go out there and be one of the best deans to come out of a high state So it's up to him to be just honing on a leadership and be able to be the best player you can and lead others to be just like him What do you feel like you're the best match for you? You're going to run through a whole time? I'm obviously just being able to shut down the run I mean I feel like I pride myself in my run game and I'm being blocked by a single person So I'll be just be able to go in there and be able to be a lead run stopper But also be able to go on on third down as well and be able to show my past rush I mean, go out there and do the best I can So I didn't really get to do what I always say How much do you feel like you've heard as a past rusher at a high-level state? Where do you feel like you've been so growing up? Yeah, I mean I feel like power is always my go-to of past rush I mean, it worked I mean, we didn't really get the rush as much of the high-level state But at times I did get the rush that showed I mean, my skillset allowed me to move guys out the way and make sacks and me and some good
I mean, I feel like obviously you always need something to work on a past rush Just different moves that come off of it Like finesse moves, any type of chops and stuff like that Just to work on those and finishing sacks or something like a work on What do you think of the biggest lessons you'll take from Larry Johnson with you to be a pal? Honestly, just focus on little things I mean, technique is critical when it comes to defeating a block or getting blocked So I mean, just honing on those small techniques So I always make sure that I'm critiquing myself in the best way possible and not getting complacent I don't think we got who the other two of your guys are expecting so much We got guys like Edrick in there, Jason Moore, Ty Worm alone I mean, the younger freshmen in there, I feel like everybody could step up I mean, those are guys that have played a little bit last year I feel like having every position vacant, I mean, it allows for competition So being able to those guys to step up and really prove themselves so they can play at a elite level It's going to be something I'm looking forward to see I want for you to leave that room in a way that they are prepared to step up It's super important, I mean, I feel like that was a whole goal as leaders to be able to just elevate the younger guys and allow them to
So when we leave that, they can carry the torch So I feel like to say, so everybody moves up from back seats to the front seats So I feel like we give them the possibility to move up to the front seats and be ready for every challenge that's thrown at them I think JT said there would be another 15 bucks next year So you're prediction on a number? I have no idea, I mean, I think there would be a lot of guys So I mean, we like a lot of good talent, a lot of young guys I mean, who knows What do you think of me for this group of guys that's here to retire, break the record You have a one-story, you didn't draft it enough in the draft? Records 15, now I see that Yeah, it would mean a lot, honestly, I mean, these guys work hard, I mean, and I'm being in a hall stage You got a lot of great guys there, I mean, guys we showed and our film shows, man, I mean, this is probably one of the more complete teams that we had in college football So I feel like I'm just a scout to understand, I mean coach to understand how good a guys we have And then, not only do we have good on the field, man, great character guys, man So yeah
How good is South Carolina? Oh, he was great, man, I mean, being able to come from Bama and build a jump on a hall stage, I mean, he felt like you played on for him the whole time I mean, this guy was a great guy, not only off the field, but on the field as well, I mean, he was very technical-sounding, man, he had a great technique He was hard to get around him in practice, so I mean, definitely showed in the game, so he's a great guy, and I appreciate him I think that we can do just like that That's great Thanks guys Rest guys here with the long-for-season potentially Yeah, we play it by ear, you know what I mean, we see how it goes by time we get in the camp, but you know, obviously he's earning his stripes So, you know, you earn your stripes, you know, a large opportunity for you, you know, we have to see how it goes with all the other stuff When we get closer to the season, and we're getting the game plan stuff, but he's doing a great job and he's taking a great step forward the way that you build the room or the way you kind of establish your room now it seems like it's been like centerpieces kind of relationships and kind of building bonds. But I'm curious is that something that you came in with the it's like a couple years ago with the intention of doing it or is it something that you're like
that's kind of been cultivated over the course of your conscious position? No it's been there for a while I've been doing that for a long time it's all about relationship. If you develop real relationship and you're authentic in your communication and you have honest feedback and you have direct teaching the guys that have a value and character and appreciate that stuff they're embrace that. So but they have to know you care and you have to know that it's real and they have to know that you're really concerned about there where it being as a young man and when you get close to them it's been a lot of time with them off the field you could coach them hard and you can say truthful things to them and then they'll embrace it and you can have real conversation because you know the only goal is to help them get better as a young man. Yeah it's done balanced up a little bit now that goes with great competition we have the we go against the best receivers and call it football so that helps escalate your growth process because if you don't figure it out real
fast you're getting embarrassed so that competition but what happened with that I got started competing I got started growing I got got better and now it's even up a little bit so where you get really good work at practice today you know I mean so it's competitive it's fun those guys both on both sides of all care about each other so it's great competition and they all real close so you know I mean it's that stuff that gets us better that will prepare us for Saturday. I know it's just it's going to competitive man they got the best group in the country that you're going to get every day so you have to bring it every day you know I mean so they they we got a great quarterback room we got a great receiver room the running backs are really good so when you out there going against them it's deep so you have to be ready for it and obviously man we see a lot of good stuff with with with with Coach Day and Coach Kelly doing over there and so it prepares you a lot and it helps us grow. Yeah because you know that's where you get better our shop is
iron so you know you get to see that every day of practice that helps you grow it's no better thing to go against every day than to see that on a daily basis. I'm also near room besides Jordan looking at to play that next one. We just moving a lot of guys around we watch our practice we have a lot of guys in there right now you know we pop out there are four different guys in there obviously the ring's holes in there germane is in there Caleb miles we have about four or five guys moving around right now we just try things out in spring ball see what it fit you know see what things work together so it's going to probably some more guys in there you know we move it around to try to just get the right fit throughout the N and C how it goes by time we get ready to start the season. He can run any strong you know I mean he's fast very serious about his business he's big it's 200 pounds he can run he's strong he's conscientious not me and he's starting to grow and he's starting to get get better with it you know I mean so we look for big things for him to spring. Keep competing you know I mean now he's made the the transition competing today you know I mean
start going in that transition is all just like how I'm in germane last year you're throwing in the fire you let him go you compete you go by time we get out of the end of training camp you've been him figured out yeah I want that but now you just throw it all at him compete continuing to grow continue to learn he has the skill set he has to length now you just got to put it all together and it takes time to do that um and hopefully you see that by time we get in the training camp it seems like you're springing kind of click for germane last year and you start to see perform a little better in practice is that like a benchmark for where you want parents to be by the middle of spring because you have to be at a certain point where you want it to start clicking yeah by the time you start getting about two weeks from now that last week you know because it takes time because there's a lot of stuff going on but you know by the time you get into that last week of spring ball you you look to start seeing the things that you look for show up and then you know you get another evaluation again we'll get into training camp see if this stuff carried on to make sure we go up for starting in September. What's your assessment of growth so it's made now that he's kind of got his feet under one defense or do you like about him and that thing will start to change? He's very conscientious he's smart he can run he's tough um he's made
the adjustment because he's out of Europe on his belt so now you can see he's not making a lot of mistakes he competes he's real conscientious and uh and he has a physical presence so the growth has been really good and we can look to continue that throughout spring coach thank you very much I can ask one more all the guys that came back like uh it's Denzel the great example because that surprised you as you reflect on all these guys that came back late to rants and it could have turned pro. No the the the culture here is real of course they does a great job of building the culture um our room is close knit the guys on defense are real close those guys want to come back they have an agenda you know we want to come back they want to come back and and and and and and walk away with something so um it didn't shock me but but it's a good environment for them too you know I mean that's when you see those guys come back that's a testimony to the the culture that's set here their brotherhood the environment and I coach today he runs the program for those dudes to want to come back because we go at it it's hard it's not easy it's not easy but what we do so if fact they come back and do that is a testament to how he runs the program coach wall thank you very much yeah what's the conversations like that let you make
I mean there's already a little talk about nice and linebacker like with the world season they've been like I was already like kind of like wasn't really learning it like no one was teaching me but I was getting them low lineback a little bit just because I knew I probably would play linebacker at some point so then like obviously when downs game here is like all right so where can I help the defense the most you know I'm saying and we're trying to get our best level on the field we're gonna help the deepest the most but that's what kind of like the conversation was and uh yeah I just want to do whatever I can whatever where the defense need me wherever I can impact most that's kind of the conversation what's been the most difficult thing about making that a true it's less time in space so less waste of movement when you find that safe you can kind of a little more waste move with your feet you can uh be take longer strides you know linebacks will have everything short choppy heat stain power keep your base so I mean that's just something like every line progress the words are honest with you that that's kind of been a big thing but there's a lot of things to work on obviously why is it that you and the staff decided that my bad
nerves were you gonna have a mix of that um I think my capability what I'm capable of and then like the person that we have like I said I'm gonna try and get the best level on the field uh whatever that may be so you can still try to figure that out just the point that the conversation was about you may have been hard being to keep your weight down the stage uh do you look bigger how much have you changed physically are you allowed to just like finally now what's I mean last year I was eating regular like I was like two thirty to two thirty five the whole year last year I don't know if you thought I was two twenty five but I was like two thirty five sometimes last year like so it's not really like anything changed you know obviously I'm gradually getting some more weight you know I'm listening heavier weight uh it was different training to be a DB to training to be a linebacker so you come gradually a little bigger embracing that different kind of training to do like yeah I love it I love to be with the linebackers I think with the DBs like sometimes in the especially in the way room like I was expecting to win
so like when I won it was like oh someone will well when that was the linebacker now it's like it's more of a composition you know I'm saying not like not any hits of the DBs I'm I'm two thirty going against someone who's two or five right so you know I'm expecting to win so I love the competition that's what you're going to be yeah Cody said you came in it was like well he's already bigger than most of the linebacker you see are you playing will and sing like how was the position uh I've been working on both yes okay is there any like the middle difference between the two in terms of the same thing um I mean obviously the standard more outside the box outside my backer overhang uh you walked up on the edge on the tight end uh wills more inside the box uh I think the biggest difference from Sam and Will Sam you just got to be more outside sometimes during the slot with two you know but I think it's similar concept because you just do the same thing in the boundary it's almost more like the samfrogs of the field and wills at the boundary so I think it's I think it's pretty similar honestly only difference is that Sam last year I never really was an interior run fitter like in the a gap you know going a to b or whatever that wherever
that might be so that's a little different but I mean I think I got some of that uh experience at safety just from a few yards back so like I said the only difference really is now just suggesting the less time yeah yeah coach most said uh you coming from where you coming from you have a better perspective of what's going on Christian play today yeah yeah I feel like I have a great understanding of the defense um I think at safety I kind of already knew what the line ones are doing so now what I'm really starting to learn is like exactly like every little detail what the D line's doing that's not really what I didn't know every little aspect of it I think I'm starting to learn that now obviously line bar you've got to be uh knowing that more so I I think when it's all said no I think I have a really really really good understanding of the defense and knowing exactly what everyone's doing yeah I think you can say I think you can say like being a linebacker in the play you're almost in every play yeah obviously the play can run away from you but you know it's safety sometimes you're just back there
playing every guest you take two two back pedals and it's a tackle so I think yeah a linebacker you're in the play more more chance more opportunities make tackles yeah I feel super comfortable with it like I said I think it's just gonna be adjustment you know obviously it's different playing from a five than a was from playing from like 10 last year so I think it's an adjustment but I'm super comfortable with it oh yeah we watch we watch we watch the table all the time uh watch practice you know he was a high level linebacker and I'm just getting started with this uh he gets a little that was a little footwork and stuff like that but it's good I get good teaching him you know obviously coach Lord Knight is great player great teacher for him coach knows you know he's a super smart uh football mind so I'm getting great teaching all around the linebacker everything happens quicker for you how much did the experience playing some of that sam stuff by your help I think it helped a little bit let's be like in terms of physicality being in the box now
down on the line but uh I do think the the run fit as as a will and the Sam can be a little different like in terms like I said like being an interior fitter like your 30 backer when A you get pools now you're gonna go spill it so things like that but I think I'm adjusting well I think I'm picking up on stuff pretty fast you know this still gonna be a lot of stuff for work on though yeah like do you feel more pressure talking to the media with your brother sitting right there not at all what do you think has been the biggest change from my backer safety I think the biggest change will probably be that that's 10 to 5 because it's a big adjustment because everything's happening faster and you gotta react faster and like I said the waste of movements I think footwork is huge I think you see the great linebackers as soon as the play happens they're going they're not taking any wasted steps or not fall stepping things like that so I think wasting waste of movement and being able to see what's happening react fast it's been the big spend fitter being on the same table with your brother
um I mean you know you got someone out there that's uh it's more than a teammate you know we call each other brothers but you know blood's a little thicker so that's always pretty cool you know it's always it's never one on one yeah but when he tells you something he doesn't observe that you you know it's coming from yeah I think when you're blood like that I think uh he's not scared to tell me the truth you know saying you know obviously guys here we we have tough love but I think it's always always gonna be a little different when it's your brother because he's gonna keep it a 100% blood exactly what you need to hear and I want to hear what's your advice on playing pickle oh for him yeah um I mean he just so I've let it he got he's just keep trusting his instincts uh now I think he's gonna be great uh that I think what's huge for him is like I said the athletic ability speed you know he bliss off the edge he's we he's been blissing super fast um and he's just great in coverage too so I think something really good I think we'll be able to do a lot of different things kind of like you see a handcock obviously a little
different body in a handcock but I think he's gonna be really good at once the stuff from that field he's he's he's he's time thank you great good temporary injury here that you know we're hopefully getting them back here soon yeah I know progress being made and you know the biggest thing you try to figure out is when when guys make mistakes do they learn from the mistake and move on from it uh he's done that he's I saw him flash today in special teams so so that's good that's positive but um but yeah I think the more guys are thrown into the fire you kind of find out how they respond and and um you know a lot of the installs kind of in now uh I think we'll still continue to install some things and look at some different uh schemes on both sides of the ball but the next two weeks it really an opportunity for guys to go compete and he's gonna be one of them because we're trying to build three deep in each position based on you know the way next year is going to be with the playoffs and everything like that we know we're gonna we used to say a pair and a spare now we need three at each position so uh need to build depth at all positions and so he'll
he'll be somebody that'll be in the mix yep yeah they were in the back field of bunch especially like you said in the coming out period you know first time doing coming out uh a little uh you know too loose on offense you know we got to tighten that up but you can see the quickness with some of those interior guys and you see cadence you see some of the the movement that's going on in there I think Jason Moore I think Larry talked about that he's flashed showing that he can do it um so yeah and then also you know on the edge you see Mitchell Mellon getting the back field as uh as a rush uh you got a couple sacks I think today so um you know same thing we're looking for for you know three three guys at each position because uh all those guys are gonna play and we're gonna roll this year because we know it's gonna be a long season
yes yeah um they get it time you have somebody who's as talented as both of both of those guys are you know you get excited about them certainly in the recruiting process but then when you have guys who have discipline and then skill like they do that's when you have a chance to have a great player I think both of them have discipline in their life um I think both of them have built up a skill package Caleb already has a year of college football on his belt at a high level so um you know he's further along that way but but Jeremiah has really stepped in you know he got his black black stripe off real quick um he's got a great approach and um you know I'm gonna be careful what I say but but he's uh he's been certainly a pleasure to watch and we're all very excited about his future if he continues on the path that he's on uh he'd have uh he's gonna play a lot of football and certainly would have a chance to start as well yeah
yeah I think you're seeing CJ play fast you know he really likes uh blitzing you can tell he's quick in there he's doing a nice job timing up the blitzes and another year under his belt of experience being in a room with Tommy Iconberg seal chambers watching how they did it now he's doing it but I think you're seeing the the speed and the athleticism and the length between Cody uh you know Arvel Sonny CJ you know those guys are athletic you know gave powers um you know all these guys are are guys who uh they can blitz they can cover they can you know check defenses they think they're doing a good job with that James and and Jim have both done a really good job of training them that way so um excited about that group you know in their versatility they're not where they need to be yet um you know I'm glad we're not playing yeah yeah uh it's kind of a build up
you kind of watch them and watch their practice and then you see you know this project you know kind of earn in there they're right so I would do it that way yeah I think the next level runner I think you need him to play for this year I think he's in this match for a lot of guys in there because of his equipment he's a very good row runner uh for the the quarterback he's that excellent bodyguide who understands states really well and an operating for air he's very very well so it's a challenge for him to be stronger and play on contact but if you could do that the health that's a good thing
uh I think the people, I'd like to see the professional, the certain talent of the country, the city of the building. One of the guys who's been very, very good, I think the city of the building is going to play for us. You get a scary sport, you see gaps, you've done a very good job. It's very disappointing to approach. You see a guy that you know can really bring value for us.
You see a guy who can see a building that's more common than a park and I thought he had to build a good road. He did this and this and this and that. I think that the building's going down for him. He doesn't really get job in the park. He's got a good way about having a pool. I felt like the city gets around and the great city of the park is going to be a place to find the city of the building. I think the city of the park is getting to see the buildings. I think he's got the city of the park. I think the city of the building is going to be a place to see the other building. I definitely was not about it. He's got a good way about having a pool. He's back there. He's going to have a pool. So we have different means, we have different kinds of eyes. He shows up in meetings right over the time.
I mean the coaches that had had ideas in that few years, I think got into the progress. But I really will like to see people Ios up into the community. Yeah, I just I want to make sure we have. We have to move to the candidate that's a really good conversation. Just want to make sure we get the right person in place and definitely taking. You know conversation, you know, and feedback from. From you know, a lot of people in the program to make sure we have the right guy. Because you're right like right now there isn't you know, like have to get done right now because of recruiting. I feel like you know, we should have somebody in place here by next week. And finally, what is handy back to you?
Well, he's finally healthy and he's actually you know putting stack and practices together. So I think that's probably the biggest thing. Because I don't think. You know, he's been able to really show what he can do because he's had some you know injuries here and there. And you know, he put on a lot of strength and a lot of weight early on and it had a few issues. But now he's healthy. So at least we're seeing seeing out there learning and growing and making some plays. So you know, I think we're kind of halfway through and figure out how we grade it out today. But at least we're making progress because he's getting on the field and he's getting those reps under his belt. All right guys, thanks. Friends, says, okay, and having a plan, right? What if what if it's not the look that I thought it was going to be now what? Where do my where do my eyes need to be and how does that affect my decision? But constantly playing those games both on the field. But also I think it's just as important to play that in your head. You know, we talk to those guys all the time that we're laying around a bed and maybe watching some film and you know,
look at a clip and okay, what would I do here on this play? What would I do here on this play and constantly challenge your mind to play with an enemy. And to play with an imagination even when we're not out there on the field doing it. It's an opportunity to grow up. It's an opportunity to get better and maybe somehow mentally I can put myself in that position. So if I do get a look that hadn't shown up on tape all year long, but they give us a different look on defense than maybe they've shown, I'm ready for that moment. What's that? Well, number one, you know, he's an ironbucker. So which is pretty incredible. Obviously, we know that's a big deal around here and his work in the way room was tremendous. So as an athlete, we've definitely seen that. And then you know, on top of that, we've seen him grow as a leader. He's more vocal. His presence has felt, I think he's playing with a little bit of an edge to him, which is good to see. I think you have to play that position with a little bit of an edge without, you know, ever getting too high or too low. And that's contagious. So we're seeing that right now from Lincoln. And then, you know, as far as mechanically, it goes, you know,
we're definitely seeing Lincoln get the ball out quick. I think he's accurate. You know, I think that his base has improved. There's been, you know, a couple of things that in the spring, he was working on with his footwork. And we've seen some drastic improvements that way. You know that he's at the Black Jersey on a lot of things that bloodshed from this. We've taken away by going play day and things like that. How do you see him as an athlete in that regard while also not being able to see it as much on the practice field since he's not alive? Yeah, I mean, you know, you definitely can't see it to the full extent as though you go live. But we still see it, you know, we still see it. You know, there's times when he's extending plays or stepping up through the pocket and taking off and going. And, you know, there's no question. Lincoln's a great athlete. And that's got to be something that he plays through his strengths. You know, that's got to be something that his game has in it, which he's shown to do a great job of, you know, he's made a couple of plays throughout spring where he's extended the play and kept his eyes down failed and made some great throws. So, you know, that's although we can't see that quite as well because we're not going live, there's still definitely a feeling for that.
You can't ignore that. When it says, you've got to kind of put some of those things that Julian does really well. How do you make sure that those guys are trying to win the competition on what they do well, but also making them get out of their comfort zone. So, you know, that's what they're being thrust into positions that maybe they're not super comfortable with to show you guys what they can do with those things. Yeah, I mean, you know, as we as we script practice and we go through it, we try to be extremely detailed in the different reps that everyone's getting. And it's not like, you know, we would ever script a certain play on purpose because it fits someone's strengths better. You know, we want them to run the offense. You know, the offense is always going to adjust to the skill set of the players that are in the entire offense, but at the end of the day, you know, the offense is going to be the offense. So, from a decision making perspective, from a throw perspective, those guys are going out there and getting those reps and competing in it. So, I assume this point training camp here, not really, they can enter into who's ahead. At what point do you need to start thinking that way? Are you just right now just being here with element and we'll get there on.
Yeah, right now we're just taking a day by day and really period by period on the field, meeting off the field. And you know, the one thing that's pretty cool is those guys are very competitive and they push each other hard and they're, you know, they're also really good for each other because they both make each other uncomfortable because, you know, they're both very good players. You know, and Tavians right there with them included in that mix and above all of that, they're still friends. You know, I think what's pretty cool right now is just, you know, you walk into that quarterback room and you've got a bunch of really, really good guys that all get along well. And, you know, we're willing to help each other out and give each other pointers and tips that they see something and, you know, it's an enjoyable environment to be around every day. But ultimately those guys are competing, you know, they're going out there and they're trying to win the job and I think they realize that every moment is important and every period is important and they're going out there trying to get done. When you talk about the question, when you talk about a quarterback getting the ball out quicker, how much of that is efficiency of mechanics and how much of that is mental, like how quickly they see something to get the ball out faster?
Definitely a combination of both, you know, I think when you look at a concept, you know, how quick can I process the information I'm getting from the defense? And the way that I can process that information quickly is where my eyes are in the right spot. If I'm looking at the right thing and I can anticipate what that defender is going to do and make a decision and get the ball out, right, that's a major, major factor in it. And then there's also a piece of it, right, that comes down to the mechanics as well. But I think more than anything, you know, it's about making sure my eyes are in the right spot, making sure that I'm trusting what my read is and making sure that I'm getting the ball out and making a great decision with football. Coach, thank you very much. Thanks guys. It's not too hard for me to put it behind me. Some happen in life, some happen in a game that may not go our way, but just by responding and coming out here and having fun. When you see older players, you know, from previous generations in the game that you've had concussions and some of the struggles they're having in their older life, what are these specialists telling you to alleviate any concerns that you may have about the potential?
About the potential of having to deal with those same problems, those former. Yeah, that's a great question. A lot of the information and a lot of things before, like during the time of those older players are a lot different than the knowledge and information that we have now. And I mean, we're able to treat concussions and also back then is like if you got a concussion, they were sending you right back into the game. Now it's a lot different. We got a protocol and it gives your brain time to heal and everything. So I think things are setting plays now where it's a lot better than before and that time where we're making problems later on. So that's why I'm not really too concerned about it. Did you have any recommended to you? Say it again. Did you have any recommended by the trainer or Michael's dad? No, I just wanted to get into a new home. I mean, people have a refer to. Also, the Dornart team meeting has said how there's a number of helmets are better than other helmets right now. So I just wanted to check those out and see what they are. Is this how you're going to get more severe than the others you had?
No, that's one of the other things. I mean, I'm not going to give a whole seminar on concussions over here. But no, it's not necessarily more severe. Each concussion, like just what I learned, each concussion is its own specific concussion. And you gotta give that time the heel and then once that's heeled and ready to go, once you get back out here, you're good. So it's not like concussions are building on top of each other. Like you give it time and heel. But I think like before, what guys were getting trouble with the long time ago, it was like they get a concussion, not fully healed. And they go right back out there and playing. Denzel, can you see a side or maybe part of it? Could you just reflect on how you've grown since showing up here in fairly 21? Is it a player of personal argument? Yeah, I've been here for a little while now. I've been enjoying every second of it. I've always came in trying to be a captain and trying to lead these guys as best as I can. And I definitely feel that I've grown vocally and just trying to help build the team up and build myself up. So I'm just trying to do anything I can to help this team. How about in a concussion situation like this, you're supposed to remind your brother, do you have to sort of involve the family's decision?
Yeah, definitely. They came down with me. When the team was here doing meetings, I was driving up to a Pittsburgh meeting with the concussion specialists and everything. And they were with me and just easing their mind. That's the biggest thing. easing their mind. They're all there, worried and everything. But they'll be okay. We saw the play with the Elijah Mottor, your head is dry. We saw the play practice. Did you think you'd be up for two weeks after that? I mean, I was good. It was that day that I was kind of had a headache and everything. But I was pretty much good after that. But it was just about going through the protocol. I mean, there was no rush back. We weren't playing regular season games. So I mean, I was just really getting the time to heal. It wasn't any rush. You both are already in camp and still had a helmet to helmet. From your perspective, it's actually the experts. Are those doing what they're intended to do? You know, you got to take, wear it when he got first.
You know what I'm saying? Like, guys are still getting concussions and getting where? Yeah, it's definitely still a physical sport. So I mean, concussion happened regardless. I know if you were in a guardian cap or not. I think it could be looked at too. I know and just talked about on the guardian cap. I don't think in the back that it's as much padding as I would like. But I feel it could be looked at. But I think you get a concussion whether you're wearing a guardian cap or not. So I mean, stuff happens. This is a physical game. Sorry. Would you just clarify this? You said you're going to get any helmet. Also, wear the guardian cap during the game? No. I'm not going to. You feel good about this game helmet that you've got. Yeah. Well, if you made a game in the brand of helmet, like any details you have, I'm not sure the brand of name yet. I'll have to get it from those guys inside. But you guys will definitely be seeing this soon though. I haven't got it just yet. How do you feel about not playing in a preseason game? You have to say as your career where it's not a big deal. I want to say it's not a big deal. But I don't feel any pressure any like,
oh, I just needed to play in a preseason game. I feel that's a great opportunity for the younger guys to get out there and showcase what they're able to do. But I still been practicing and playing and working out and getting ready for the season. So I mean, I know the game. I'm looking forward to that first game. And I'm not really concerned about not being able to get a snap of the preseason game. But you think about MJ did feelin' it to be particularly during the joint practice against Jeffers. Yeah, MJ is the number one corner. I mean, you guys see it. He's gonna be big for us this year. And I think that's what's special about this team. We got three number one corners myself. MJ and Greg, I thought we all number ones. And we able to do different things out there on the field. And one guy's out, another guy can step in and not lose track or not lose pace on what we got going on. That's how he's doing. MJ has a good growth as a leader in the whole year of the year three. And he's kinda picking on this one as a guy that's bringing energy and also trying to bring the ball on. Yeah, definitely. Like you said, bring it in. That's exactly. Bring in energy, bring in guys along. MJ's real vocal out there.
And he competes as he's in competitor out there and just working hard and trying to be the best. He got the mindset of wanting to be the best. And he is. So we just go out there and compete with one another. We're happy to see CD Lam get his contract signed and be ready to go out there and play this game. So you can face the bad. No, I'm definitely happy for him. That's like changing a contract and everything for him and his family. So definitely happy for him. I'm looking forward to going to having that match up in the game. I always love going against the number one guys and best guys on that team. So I'll be looking forward to it. It turns out we got more history. The concussions that we're talking about. I think when you suffer the latest one. People who cover the team and fans are wondering how loud the discussion could you contemplate the tie-in for that? Ever go through your mind or do you immediately know that you're going to come back? Yeah, like I said, this is a game I love. And I love playing this game. Being with the guys out here. I really don't see myself doing too much other stuff.
So unless I'm just really physically unable to play this game. I don't see myself stepping away from football no time soon. And like I said before, I can't take it easy on these receivers out here. So me being out here, I got to give them a good look and just go out there and play. But I answer your question now. I haven't seen myself walking away though. Are you actually out of protocol now? Yes. Hey, did you say, uh, great cold miles hard in the steel drafts? What are you seeing? Say it again. Sorry, great cold miles hard in the steel draft. You seen from him and what kind of excites you by hand? Yeah, Miles, he's been balling. He's been showing out, making plays against the Vikings. And just making plays out here. So it was big for him to make the team. I was happy for him. We all congratulate him. And he's going to be a big piece on our team, you know, coming going forward. Do you know how often another rookie you mentioned making the receivers better? Where have you seen? How have you made Jamari talked about how you helped him, you know, as a rookie? What have you seen out of him in his development? Yeah, he's been looking good since he came in.
I think he's been getting better and better. He's night and day from once he came in. So where he's at now, I believe. I think that's just his competitive nature and what he's been doing out there in practice. And us going against one another out there. So he's been good and he's going to be a big piece as well. That's our offense. What's your tip? What's your tip? Do you give receivers? How can you help a receiver? Yeah, I mean, it's a constant communication. If I were to win on a red, they may come and ask me what it is that you've seen on that play. That you're able to get in position. And I'll tell them that. I may ask them a question. So it's just that constant communication on how we can get each other better. Are you sure? Thank you, guys. Thank you. Thank you. Glad to see you back. Glad to see you back. Is that kind of mindset that you've taken every day in practice? Like you just say you're not happy during my catch-and-go-done people. I was 98 out of 100 receivers.
That's what I'm talking about. Is it kind of the back of your head that we're going to get Jeremiah and Karnel and Brandon and Alec? Yes, that's my mindset. Like in practice the other day, I want those boys to get me everything that they have. So like, up in the inside of this, it's going to be easy for me and all people to. What have you seen with the gross or the young foreigners? Obviously we saw it, but it's not a Jeremiah last year. They're your mates, aren't they? But Calvin and some of the Aaron, some of the young guys, how have you seen them come along? And Scott has gotten completely better from his brain. Glad completely better. Is that just time in the program? I'm just getting used to the speed of college football, I would say. What about Calvin? He was obviously here last year. He was. Calvin has gotten a lot better. Like I would say that he's gotten a lot smarter. That's right, GB. I think he's there about Calvin's intelligence, you know, where he's grown. Where specifically is it?
The film room, is it, and I pick it up, you know, the playbook, where have you seen that? The brain up, a grab. I would say Calvin has gotten smarter just like his game knowledge, like expecting like a different kind of routes and stuff like that. What did everything start to click for you in the last year? Was it in the soft season? When did you feel really comfortable? I would say in the spring, I started to get a lot more comfortable in our defense. We say you break up the past yesterday with the German name, I'm sorry if you're asked about this earlier, but what is like going up against him to you? It seems like you enjoy it. Yeah, I love it. He's tough. I like going against him a lot. He's really good. What have you improved in your game? Just from that, for example, those one-on-one matchups, this pre-season or whatever. You know how a ballie who disgave it. So German, he forces me to play the ball, because if you don't play the ball against him, he'll go get it. Yeah, yeah. And you, Dave, send it. How would you describe this defense now compared to this time a year ago from the standpoint of a confidence factor?
You don't mean that you guys feel on the field? How would you describe it? It's different about it, I guess. I feel like everybody has a lot more similarities there. Everybody's like, I would just say that we're going to just just just just smarter. When you look up and late and ran, some decided to come back and Caleb down, transferred in. What did you feel about that? Did it just grow stronger in that one week span, two weeks span? You're still on up saying? I feel like those guys have played at that level. Those guys have played at that level. Yeah, I would say that. A guy's coming in, what they say, he was coming back, Zell say he was coming back, it's just so light. Yeah, that would be a happy day tonight. Yeah, you did? Thanks, man. Of course. Variance versus mobile quarterbacks helps us obviously be on the GS help of his home and learn from our, where we had them going through the hole and how to scrap us, where we can learn from those crampals. And we go from that game and the past game we played against the organ just learning, learning the quarterbacks tendencies
and when they like to run, where they like to run, everybody helps us out, really closing the cage and facing the pocket ball. Is there a fine line between being aggressive but also being wary, this guy can slip away, you know, slip away, you're saying what I'm saying? Yeah. You can't just go right at him and go ahead. I'm sorry. Yeah, he's definitely a quarterback and then gets out of the pocket. So I mean, he's definitely a threat and he's a main guy in the offense he runs the show. So I mean, be on the stop him and contain him, really slows the offense down. So be on the cage and pocket and be on the slow him down and make him make more decisions on the run and moving around. That way it helps us. Go ahead and do you want to ask about their center. I impress you with him the last time you guys played. He seemed to have a pretty good game, you know, and he's kind of a tough guy to move out of there and stuff he looks like. What's your impression of him? He's definitely one of the better centers in the conference. I mean, he's a really good guy. I mean, be on the beat and there be on the size and be on the move the way he can. It's really hard to get around him at times, but he's definitely having the game plan and working against and working to tend to see
that he has to be a work against that really helps us. It helps me. Yeah. It's the real middle. Steven Leonard, college football, dog. Yeah, kind of piggybacking on that. How much of it was there offensive line being a strike that are team versus Dylan Gabriel being able to escape and the lack of pressures that we had on our defense? Yeah, I mean, when you got a good offensive line, it makes it even better for a quarterback, you know, being able to roll out to know that your line was going to help you protect you when you're in the pocket. So, I mean, it makes it easier for throws and it makes it harder for us, honestly, for having a good offensive line. So, I mean, like I said before, it's just being able to attack the offensive line, attack the weaknesses and be able to go after them and make it harder for the quarterback. He's harder for them and a world. Or for a right, Andrew Gillick, believe in dog problems. What's the challenge similar to Tim's question and you know, we play a team like this that runs the level of RPOs that they do that was in the face of you. How do you stay true and be aggressive and force the issue where, you know, Dylan Gabriel is really going to make it a great deal. Oh, yeah. Like I said, just putting pressure on him. I mean, do you still get it? Get back there.
I mean, we got a lot of different plays that can help us get back to our passer and playing and playing to their tendencies. So, a lot of times they have the RPO, the RPO helps them out. It means you get the ball out fast. I mean, things like Jackson and JTB, you know, get their hands up. Knock the ball down. Crazy stream. I'm out of pressure for the quarterback when you got hands in your face all times. And final questions. Bill Rubino, it's Columbus Dispatch. We've asked about Dylan Gabriel and the receivers. They're not one dimensional. They're a good running back in Jordan James. What makes him special and what's the challenge for you guys? Well, I think he's definitely one of the better running backs on the conference as well. I mean, just how hard he runs is it's hard to bring him down at times. So, I mean, as a front pro, we probably stop in the run. That's the first thing we're going to do as we go on the game. I mean, past Russian is good and all, but we can't stop the run. I mean, we're going to run the ball down and throw all the time. So, all the time we have to figure out how we're going to stop him. We're going to run the ball and then we're going to take him down. So, I mean, it's our job as a front pro to go on there and stop the run. We're going to make him one dimensional as we go out there. So, I mean, if we get out there every time every mindset we go out there,
it means we're going to get him. We're not going to allow him to get in the yards, allow him to get going. We're going to stop him. We're going to make him throw the ball. When JT was up here asked him about how to compare contrast him and Jack as personalities. What's your take on that? How different are they as personalities? I definitely think Jack is more outgoing. I mean, the guy he's means, like the light that shines around me. And everybody who goes around here and everybody loves him, he's an outgoing guy. They're going to come to you, shake your hand any time of day. And then JT is more of the glue guy. I mean, a lot of guys gravitate to him. I mean, he just has a bright smile on him all the time. He's just a great guy that people like to be around. And they're two good people, so it's hard to tell. And Ty, I do that one more question for you. Tony Irvin, like that. You guys obviously have faced tough, but you didn't last week. What's the key for you as a defensive one facing tempo? Oh, yeah. I mean, we've been going through all week in the past two weeks. It's just getting set. I mean, that's the first thing you do. If you're not set, it makes it harder to do your job. So let's be honest, again, on the ball gets set before they're lined up. And set the ball is one and more important thing.
So when we're set, we're able to do our jobs at the efficiency they can before they can do theirs. How does it feel to go to the top? It could be difficult at times. You know, you got to look to the signline first. You got to get the call. I mean, the call has to be set down first. It can't be difficult at times, but that's definitely what we've been working on the past three weeks. It's just getting the call, getting the call early gets set. So we can go and be play faster. You never find where you're like, you've changed the plane to one side of the field. And now it's lined up. They're going to be in the other side. So like, you've got to just run the signline side, like just to get the message. Oh, yeah. I mean, I have a lot of last game, you know. It's hard. It's definitely tough. I mean, that's what we work on practice. It's moving as fast as we can, we're simulating these things so we can get into the game. It's a lot easier. So we're moving around side to side, running around, doing extra conditioning just for moments like this. Alright, thank you very much. Alright, thank you. Thanks, Tom. I think you know you're not going to get hit, but more preseason and first couple games, I'm excited to see see what that looks like. I think of the sheets, especially. I'm excited, man. Like I said, from jump, he's a special, special player.
He don't really get that so many players like him that's so quick, so fast, at least speed, and I ain't got run routes too. So I'm excited to see what he does in the future, but I feel like that's the least they can do for him this year. How do you think he would get me out of the way for another? It's just speed, man. Speed, you can't teach speed at all. Just having us on opposite sides, even to play on both sides. It's just speed down the field. You can run 15, 20 yards in breakers, out breakers. And like I said, you're going to have to play two safes most of the time. Or you can run the ball, you can get underneath or else. It's going to be a great compliment to the offense, so I'm excited. Chris, you said you hope this new offense will put playing makers in the position of a player. What about you specifically, what's an area where you think you'll have more opportunity to face your game? It's a lot of areas that you can see to look at, to improve my game. But yards are the cases of when I'm looking forward to just more opportunities with that, more space.
Just to showcase my speed and my ability with the ball. So I'm excited to do that this year. Something that I really showcase the first two years. So I'm excited to be with the quick game element of it, just getting the ball in your hands. Yeah, quick game, play action, more over the middle routes. It's a lot of different things that you can say that guys are going to help that. But like I said, I'm excited. How would you describe the chemistry between you and the Garrett? We're getting way better, man. I mean, it was our first year last year. So it was kind of up and down, but that's what it comes with the game of football. So we worked a lot this off season, OTAs, which was really good. And we got up to a good start these first two days of the game, getting extra working. But that's going to come with time. So I'm not worried about that at all. We both competitors, we both want to be the best. So we got to do something to be good. Where do you kind of notice that difference is just like, you feel on the ground.
What do you kind of notice now that it's here too, but that's more natural. What do you mean? So I dare to bring you in your death. What do you kind of know? It's just like, it's more than that, man. It's NFL. Everybody, you know, everybody's good. So we just got to know what each other is thinking, prec and that post-nap coverage is where the ball's going to go. Just reads what read I am and in progression. Everything goes along with that. So just being on the same page, being like I said, chemistry is built with time. So it's just little stuff like that that turns into big things is going to be huge. You caught one from Spencer Routland at 8-2. What do you really impression? It's real talented. That's the first thing I've seen from him. His arm talent is out the charts. He's a real natural feel out there. He's going to be real good. I want to see him in action, but from my first impression, he's going to be a real good player. It's going back to the machine that you caught all the different stuff you should do. You think there's still a lot more there for him?
Oh, yeah. He hasn't really, I think this is the first year of being receiver two or really receiver. In my opinion, we both are receiver one. So I just be able to move around, run real routes. Feel like it's going to be a huge advantage for the same. So it's a special player and I can't wait to see him ball. I can't wait to see him get more opportunities. You're going to see what he can do. My run real routes, you mean just like an opportunity to run? Yeah, just getting more, you know, he hadn't really played too many plays in his first two years. He kind of just get thrown in there when he's getting the ball or when he's a decoy or something like that. He's actually being involved in the offense, always been in. Even on run plays, I feel like he's going to be a huge advantage for him to get a feel for the game and be more natural out there. How far does it for a receiver like that? The shed kind of, you know, think of him as the deep threat label and then so people just think of him as a deep threat.
But he can do more. How hard is it to kind of shed that label or that perception in my mouth? I mean, that's what life everybody is trying to label somebody as one thing or two things. But I feel like you can showcase, I mean, that's not really who you are, you know what I'm saying. As it gets more opportunities as you can see, you can see you can do more and more. That's what anybody on the team. So I'm excited, like I said, and for his huge opportunity is going to get this year. And it's going to be a big one for the Saints. Does this scheme ask for more blocking from receivers as ever more responsibility? Oh yeah, for sure. I mean, that's what I told you, too. We both have to block. And I know we're not the biggest guys or the strongest, but like I said, we want to be on the field. We got to be on the field for the play action plays. All those things. So we both got to go block D-Line and block linebackers, but that's what's coming football. So we both got to take that next step in our game. Is that somewhere there's like a payoff? Like you can write down your play action next time.
Yeah, so it's going to be a huge payoff. Like I said, most of our office is based on play action. All the in-breakers, all the yards at the catch of a play. So we got to go in there and block. Like I said, take that next step and be able to be great for our team. Like being here? Oh yeah, so. After I feel the weather out here, and that's what I'm used to. Not using the war and then out there trying to catch my breath. It's a great opportunity for us. Are you going to check for the seed family or friends at all? So this is their football friend here? Not yet, but they don't come by every single day. Appreciate you all. Thank you very much. I'm going to see the whole field while he's in the pocket. Are two big things in terms of his accuracy? All right, I'm very WBNF. Coach, this is kind of uncharted waters with the new playoff system and everything from an offensive standpoint. How much of the offense is in? And are you holding things back because there's some poofy? I mean, how do you manage all that?
Yeah, I don't think we hold anything back. I think our offense is always game plan specific in terms of who we're playing. And how do we attack what they do? Each defense you face is somewhat unique. And so you can say, hey, this team's a little bit like this team, but not totally like that team. So I think it's not, hey, this is a really good play. Let's not run it because we're going to need it down the road. You have to win every game. And I don't think you can take that approach of, let's save this for another game because you don't know how games are going to express themselves during the course of the game itself. So everything we do is just game plan specific, especially now that we've gotten into a conference play. Yeah, I mean, we could add stuff that I think we may have done in the spring, but we haven't used yet just because we haven't faced that defense yet. Thanks for the whole work, Larry. Chip, in 2022, your UCLA offensive line was a semi-finals for the Joe War award. Today, this offensive line was made by semi-finals for that.
Do you see similarities for the way that that unit was playing and the way that Justin had your guys playing right now? I think they're different. I don't really upset it before. I'm not into comparing one group to another group. I didn't know that that's pretty cool for those guys. That's a prestigious award. You know, those guys usually go unnoticed. That's the nature of the position if you're an offensive lineman. They, you know, they're by their close of two value hardware. They don't really get a lot of attention. They're not the guys that are out in the limelight, let's some of these other guys, but they work their tails off. You know, I think that's the, the gist of anything that's going to be a really good football team. It has to be strong on both lines, and that's the fact that they've been recognized for that. That's something that's, that's pretty cool. But now we got to live up, we got to live up to that standard every day. You guys know a lot of stuff, those award test coaches, but to see the, the way that those guys have responded since losing Josh, that's a play card and the leader of the offensive. How do you, that I waited that, what do you think of being in the way this play without you?
I've been really impressed, and I think really Donnie and Seth have really stepped up in, in, in that leadership port, you know, and I think the two of those guys have really kind of led from the front to tough, hard-knosed physical players. Obviously Donnie being selfish and moving from left card to left tackle was a really big deal for us. And he continues to work in his craft every day, because, you know, I think everybody just thinks, oh, line. But, you know, all five of those positions are really different. And it's not easy to go from one position to another position. And the fact that Donnie's done that has been great. And I think Seth really, because he calls all of our identifications and directs what our blocking schemes will be, you know, is really kind of fell into that leadership role force. And I think our guys are rallying behind those two. All right, Dave Holmes. That's why I, Ryan talked a little bit about his upbringing at Fenway Park in the historic baseball venue. You want to get your thoughts on playing a game in great way? Yeah, I think it's cool. You know, I've not seen, I've seen just highlights of a football game in there. And I've been to a game at Riggly when I was out recruiting once. But the fact that you can play in settings like that is, it's pretty cool.
And I think it makes it unique, you know, obviously, they're refurbishing their stadiums. So, you know, they got to be on the, they got to either build the one that they did on campus or go to Riggly. So the fact that we get to be the one team that plays in Riggly, I think it'll be pretty cool. And I think our players won't enjoy that. Awesome. The podcast, I know every game plan every week is different, contingent on the opponent. But it's felt like the last couple of game plans and lean a little bit more on Will's over Russian threat. What's motivating that decision? The defense is that the people deploy, you know, sometimes they always have an extra guy in the box. And if you run the quarterback, then that evens numbers back out. It's as simple as that. You know, some teams don't do that. And other teams do do that. You know, it's just sometimes when you get, especially when you get in a conference play, I think there's a lot of people in this league that know how to stop the run. So, you know, you got to be able to have a mobile quarterback and it helps that Will has that mobility. Bill Landis, Kings of the North. Do you ever interrate off the play or change something up just for the sake of doing it to break a tendency or put something different on stone?
Or is it always opponent specific? No, it's always opponent specific, but you still self-scout yourself. And what are we doing out of this formation and what is our run pass ratio? And even within that, within out of this formation, all runs are this. And then that's always the fine line. Well, we should do something different. Well, what we're doing is working. Why would we do something different? You know, so you kind of play that game and go back and forth with it. But we're constantly working on self-scout of ourselves and tendencies that we're trying to just understand. But sometimes these are good tendencies. You know, you could be, hey, you're 90% run out of this formation. You're also 90% success out of this formation. So, you know, do you not call that ever again because you think that they think that you think this. You know, you can get into that real dilemma of just, you know, it's still about executing and still about lighting up and playing. So, but we do spend a lot of time on that. That's part of what our weekly game plan meetings are about. Any more emphasis on that in a college football season that can now be 17, 18 games where you want to make sure you're sprinkling in different things so that if you could game 17
and a team has a pretty expansive book on you guys, still wise that they can't, you know, key in on something you've done all year. You want to make sure you have those changes. Yeah, there has to be some of those. But again, I think you can drive yourself crazy. When we put this on tape and they think that we can do this because they know that we can do that. They can't do that. And we do that. And I didn't make any sense what I just said. And that's what's going on in your head when you're starting to think about all that stuff too. So, it's that process. You know, I still think you have to part of being really good at it is what are we good at? And how do we continue to be good at it so that everybody in the stadium doesn't know, hey, they're running the ball over the right side on this play because that's what they always do. And I think you're still trying to mass some of those things, but you still have to play to your strengths. Can you have a feedback on this? Yeah, what? You kind of offered a question about what running, I think maybe the last thing I've probably said, you mentioned, you don't have some TV nights just talking about it to be power all the time. But how do you see Will's progression in understanding or reading what he does his want?
And what he's going to do when he comes to handing off to Q or Drey, pulling, or is that more from you guys? Do you want to hold those or something more? No, no, it's a good question. We don't tell him we want you to do this or want you to do that. It's totally a lot of that stuff is if it's a read play, it's he has to read it out and how he sees it. Just like we don't tell him where to throw, you know, it's the plays called to the curler, the flat, but it depends, those are defender defend the curler, defender flat. Like you can't tell him before the play, throw the curl because I know the guy's going to chase the flat. Well, then he sits in the curl and you throw a pick and it's, Coach told me to go there, you know, we know we told you to read this player. So it's the same thing with some of the read plays that we run. And I think he does a really good job, you know, he was really well trained. I think Chris climate does a great job and calling climate a great job at case date. And you know, so Will's got a really, really good understanding of of our running game, you know, was more of just learning the terminology here as opposed to what it was like there. But I think he does a really, really good job of that. And when we put something in new, it may be new to this unit, but it's not new to Will.
It's just, oh, yeah, we run this and then we'll go back and actually look at case date with him and, you know, kind of pick his brain. How do you read and how is it presented to you and what's the best way for us to present it so that we can execute. You're a cop in this. What do you see as the advantage from, from huddling more and just sort of planning to slow pace of play in offense versus past couple years, you have to remember more place, prevent it from your now pace a little slower, just what. Yeah, I think you can communicate better. Obviously the thing that's changed this season and I think a lot of people have slowed down is the ability for the quarterback to communicate with everybody before the play. You know, before it was just everything was driven by signals and everybody was looking to the sideline and then getting everybody on the same page. So there's there's some teams. And sometimes when that's to your advantage, you know, I think more people do it to us because they don't want the bone or hands so that I think the game has.
I think it is many possessions right now as we have in the past just because I think all sides are doing it a little bit more, but I think the communication thing that you're allowed to talk to the quarterback up to 15 seconds on the on the play clock is is one of the advantages of huddling. You're earning it too, but you guys have also done it. Does it keep you in mind to be able to do the other team? Well, it's an advantage again from being able to communicate so what will can talk to the offensive line about you know, I mean like normally you'd send a play and but he couldn't give them like hey these guys are 85% twist and boundary corner on this place. So make sure that we're really high alert for that. You know, so there's there's a lot more that goes on. It's not a two way conversation because he can't talk back to you, but you know, we have a style of speaking in that situation so that we can communicate some different things before it was. You just call the play and broke now you can give him a lot more information. You know, there may be a player got injured the play before. Hey, there's a new left corner in the number 15. We talked about him. We saw him on film. This is what he's susceptible to.
Let's make sure we're attacking him when you know he's in instead of you waited until you get to the sideline between series and go hey, there's a new corner and I didn't know he was in, but you can communicate that stuff now. Give me a little bit of thanks Jerry. I'm going to pull up on that a little bit or just on offensive plays. Do you ever have times in games where you have to say to yourself, I got to be disciplined here. I got to call some run plays. I know it sounds kind of stupid, but I mean to have the balance when you look at this lineup with Jeremiah and Mecca and Carnell. You could throw them all 50 times a game and nobody would question that either. You're saying does it take discipline to also stay with the run game? I think it takes discipline to know what the defense is trying to take away from you. So, you know, for you to try to continue to throw it if they're going to play high safety and light boxes. You know, you should be running it more than, you know, and when people are loading up the box, take away your run and saying, hey, we're not going to let you run the ball in the situation. And you are still trying to run the ball in the situation. That's, that's where I think the discipline is.
So, sometimes it's not consecutive plays in a row or series. It's just kind of what are they like? Because you take, say you're playing Northwest, you have nine games right down in Northwestern. This is what they've done for their last nine games. What, as you go into the really first, second, third series of a game, is what we saw in the last nine games actually happening in this game. And if it is, then we're pretty solid in terms of our game plan. If not, then you may have to morph a little bit towards run or a little bit towards pass based upon how they decided they were going to come out this week. Because they may have come out in the previous nine weeks and done this, but in your game, they're doing it a little bit differently. So, it's the ability to make those adjustments and kind of lean one way or the other. You know, I think it's the discipline part you're talking about. Not just saying, well, we're just going to chuck it. But if they're playing really deep and you're still trying to throw it deep, then that's not smart either. I don't mean to throw it deep every time. Okay. You just want us to throw it every time? Yeah, yeah. That's fine. My loss of winning dad aired out.
But follow up. Well, once you can do it. You're not a Woody Hayes guy then, huh? Yeah. Well, come on. You can't go both ways. I've heard about it a lot of women Texas. Okay. See, you're not a bear brank guy. Yeah. We've got about that layer. When you walk into a place like Wrigley Field, you seem to have a feel for history and stuff. Gail Sayers ran there, you know, Dick Buck is playing there. Yeah. Most people don't take that they're all playing soldier field and stuff. Do you think about that kind of where you are? I will Friday because we're actually going to get to the stadium and get a chance to kind of look around and see what it looks like. But is that end to the? Yeah. It always does. I mean, I love whenever we were wherever I've been when you get a chance to go playing some of these iconic stadiums and players that you saw when you were growing up and play here, that's always a really cool part about what we get to do. But yeah, that'll be it'll be fun. I think everybody's excited about playing the Scandal Wrigley. Great. Go. Thank you very much. All right. Thanks, guys. You know, just more so let's get off the ball. What kind of impact did working with Brian Young this past week have?
The defense line as well? I met a big impact BYU. You know, obviously, a little bit. You know, we went back to the basics just on technique, footwork, just to fundamentals. And I think that definitely helped prepare this for the game. Did Reels rotations on the defensive line different this week? Just getting maybe more plays to sequence together, set a counter rotate while I... Yeah, it was more so, you know, six play, if a guy gets tired, just rotate out. But it's a cool rotation. And definitely helped us stay fresh. Even that last drive during the fourth, guys, we were just a lot fresher, able to rest the passer. So I feel like it benefited us. Is there also just a, like, I don't know, just like getting into the game flow when you're not... Yeah, so you know, you can get more into it rhythm.
No, definitely. Cam, I'll put that sack in the fourth quarter. I don't know if it pushed him out of total range, but obviously missed the throw go right after that. Like, Cam's obviously a leader on this team. When he makes a big play like that, like, how much maybe does that give a boost of adrenaline to the defense? A big boost. Because, you know, that's, you know, that's OZ Cam. You know, that's the biggest Cam right there. You know, all you look at and just smile. But it was a big boost. You know, definitely makes you get on your horse a little more. And just keep your head down and keep grinding throughout the game. That's key and prestige the way that he's kind of accepted his role this year. You know, he's not playing as much as he used to, but obviously, and kind of just embraced that and does it do anything for you. Yeah, I mean, I've been learning a lot from Cam, especially technique-wise. You know, I would ask him about just, you know, how I would look at his old film, I'd ask him about, you know, what was he seeing?
And, you know, during this particular play. But I think he's an awesome leader. He welcome me and my open arms come here. And, you know, that's my guy. Hey, when, like, some really tiring stands up front of the team, so, like, I've played up to my expectations. Like, I will be better in the play. What was it mean when somebody hits the stage with a lot of people grew up watching him? Yeah, I mean, T5, he had to, man. I mean, you know, every game may be your best game. That's the lead. You know, but he came up close with a pick. I mean, you know, regardless of it all, he always finds the way to get an acceptance on the high he keeps doing it. But he definitely, I smile at that too. It's like, you know, I watched him high school, where he just his whole career. So it's an honor to be playing with him. Rizzie's talked about kind of changing some things every now and then to make
keep your body uncomfortable. What's the value of that from a player perspective? I think just in terms of, you know, staying uncomfortable on things that mental aspect, going through a game, things may not go your way, just being in that uncomfortable state and always having the will to push him, fight through. How have you seen the changes with the benefits rather of those changes that you all make this week? I mean, like, from practice that's scheduled to your position rules in the locker room? Yeah, I mean, I think we can see it, you know, during the game. We just watched film. I even though myself, during the run, I was just in my hand placement was a lot better. You know, because we were just refined a lot of the smaller details that BYU felt like we needed to fix. So I think it's paying off. And you also talked about confidence, amen. You all started about obviously up there, bigger rising on the past week.
How much of the confidence boost do you get from this win? Oh, a lot. I'm a lot, I feel like we, the whole week, you know, we was talking about finishing. And I felt like we did that. You know, we kept our heads down, we went back to the basics. The fundamentals, technique, hand placement, you know, that lean that you have to have. And, you know, just refining the small things and it all paid off. So it's definitely a confidence boost. How much you describe Peyton Turner from your time with him watching him through training camp and then having a bigger impact on his class weekend? Yeah, Peyton, great player, great teammate. You know, that's a, that's a, I think, a guy that's a team I grew closer with. But a great, I mean, he's a great player, a hell of a guy. Thank you, Barber. Your ship not only from me, but from a few other guys in the online group.
It will be really special throughout those next 18 days. What is that about Austin Terrible? What does that say? What is it that's about Austin Terrible? Yeah, no, I mean, you know, Peyton, he's been doing, you know, everything right. I mean, he's been, you know, bouncing around. He's been, you know, physical out of adversity as well. I mean, he's, he's prevailed and he's been doing a great job leading and stuff like that. Being a younger guy, I'm self-reliant to step up and take their roles. Been huge, not only for me, but for our entire team and for our unit. And so for him to continue to take those steps is, you know, it's going to be really important to show this off season, or throughout this season, through this off season, because we have a really long season coming up. Like we know, you know, it's going to take everybody. And last year really showed that. So I think that leadership not only coming from, you know, like a couple of guys, but from the entire group. And it's going to be so important because we're at least that we're going to need everybody. We're playing for a while. Then you become a starting left guard. Then you move back to center and you become the starting center on the national team. Yeah. It's under your audience.
It's a little bit of a place question. But what a world in last year came out on top. Yeah. As you reflect on that, what that's fine. Yeah, I mean, just how blessed I was. Just, you know, continuing to come up with blessings. I mean, I never thought, you know, that would be the case. You know, I'm not going to depend. I was like, I never played it, but you want to give her shot. And I was like, shoot, why not? And through that, you know, I couldn't be more blessed. And then from taking over after Steph got her set got injured and then being there still coaching me not. Not just like taking a back seat and working on his NFL journey. But he really sat, you know, sat back and helped me out was a blessing as well. Being able to play with guys like with two first rom picks. And three all Americans and Josh fire should have been all Americans. It's really for all Americans. It was really, you know, such an honor to me and be able to play with those guys. I just been blessed to play with a lot of really great people. And coach, just talked about, you know, Austin's development and how quickly kind of he flipped the switch after the title game. How motivated he was. When did you kind of see him flip the switch? Did you talk to him at all like that the motivation he had to get better and play a big role this season?
Yeah, you know, I mean, pigs always a really intense guy. I mean, especially when, you know, we're doing any off season training or something like that. He's definitely a guy that gets people going. He's a really strong guy, really competitive. And so for him to just kind of, you know, unravel a little bit more of that and just kind of like bring that raw emotion. I think to what we do has been really just fun to see. And I think it's kind of like a culmination throughout the entire off season from winter training to summer training to now. And he's just continued to steadily incline on that. They're really great leadership. So the long way to go by, I think he's been doing a really great job in learning. And what he's able to do for the group. I guess I'm gonna have to last 12 months. I'm just kind of what the chaos was. How valuable was the last summer? So once it's the ability to be able to, to not rule out. Yeah, it's been awesome. And to work with guys, like I said before, like LaTarraels has been like all like probably one of the greatest blessings I've been able to have throughout the last seven months. through what he's done for me, through what Coach Bohn has done for me, Coach Dick,
he coach Johnson, all those guys that really helped me out to become such a better player than I was. It's just been really important just so I can narrow down on what I need to do because as a center you kind of need to be able to play all three positions and getting comfortable in my body posture and stance and how I drive off the ball and stuff like that is important not only for center but for everything. So I've just been blessed with opportunity and people honestly. What did you learn mentally to help your game grow? Yeah and I think from being in those huddles being with, I mean even with great leaders like Will Howard and stuff like that, I found that we always play the best when we can play fast and we're having a lot of fun. I think we play really really hard when we're having fun with each other. I think when we kind of have that mindset of we're going to burrow down and it's us against whoever it's us collectively our unit against whoever wants to line up across
from us I think that's when we have our strongest mindset and collective force together. And I think playing with Donnie and playing with Josh Fyre and Jimmy and Seth and all those guys in the past and stuff like that they've taught me that physically we can be really capable of mentally all together like we're pretty hard to deal with. Of course it's going to be like the biggest difference between a center who's getting ready to start for the first time in his life and a center who's been through the battles and has a bunch of experience. Yeah I mean a center who has a lot of green mind as he goes up there and he's really just hoping he just doesn't mess up he's hoping you know the Snaggers quarterback he's hoping on a lot of stuff you know he's not really dictating anything he's not going up there deciding it was like okay I'm going to give this guy two options now. I know I've watched in a film I know the tendencies of this player I've played these guys before I kind of have a feeling of what this D-Corner coordinator can do or what he likes to do just from learning from different experiences and different coaches so just being able to go
there now with experience is huge. I didn't think I knew how valuable experience was two years ago and I still have a lot of experience to get yet I think in my experience or in my journey my career but so far I think the experience has been you know invaluable for me just from those past two years so now. Yeah I'm I'm excited I was looking up a bunch of like trash talk in German for them just so the ref doesn't get us on the couple you know but no I'm pumped actually it's to be fun to see him I mean I'm hitting me and him you know I've been best friends with the past couple years living together and so it's been you know it's a blessing to be able to go and play up against him and I don't really know where he's playing at right now I guess position wise specifically but wherever he's at I'm pretty excited to throw a double TMI I'm and hopefully roll him over a couple times. Do you think you can repeat what German I really just
call a pomellus which is like chubby. I'm kind of the type to like just kind of keep moving forward and we'll celebrate after but a lot of the guys were talking to me about it whenever we go it was pretty cool I don't know if y'all saw we had like a little tent on the sideline because it was like hot so yeah our equipment team did a really good job with that so it was kind of a cool vibe because you couldn't really see like the fans or anything it was like right over you it was it was cool and yeah I felt like a little huddle but uh yeah I don't know I didn't really let it I didn't want to let it get to me because sometimes what can happen is like once you start getting like numbers up like you'll kind of get satisfied be like oh okay like I'm kind of done for the game like I don't really need to when really you can get a lot more so yeah I don't know I think it was the first drive was I had like 1.5 yeah and yeah so I mean like the second most in a game in Carolina history like the only one who had more was Julius Peppers like yeah you don't seem like somebody who would get too excited about that but yeah yeah yeah yeah I didn't even know that honestly uh until after the game and
that was pretty cool would have been nice to get one more but yeah it was that was pretty cool hopefully I'll have some more opportunities to do that soon but yeah it was pretty cool yeah you have taken some heat for your celebrations not yeah yeah use the by-week to refine any no I mean especially like I'm sure you all saw the video that they put out with like the whole book yeah that was that was pretty funny um I think honestly at this point I got to like stick to it now like now that I've like there's a name for itself yeah but honestly it's pretty because like I've basically like since I mean you can ask like my parents like since I was in like middle school I've I've never like been like soup like I just get really excited and I just like start like flexing out like since I've been like 11 years old I've always done that and yeah there's like a ton of high school pictures of me doing and yeah that's just what I've always done so it's pretty funny I think a big positive for that celebration is like normal people in the stands can do it yeah which is not the case with some celebration yeah yeah like even I could do
the boflex yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah there we go yeah but I like the way he doesn't like he doesn't stand over the quarterback he's just celebrate like dude he just like the quarterback it's time to boflex yeah have you heard from either boflex or bojangles are from the Carolina I have not I mean I haven't I guess I haven't done a great job of reaching out but yeah I probably shouldn't let's go what they should call you yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah obvious it's bow time yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah if I can't buy the bow meal at Keenan Stadium by Saturday at 8 p.m. do you like the Bose Sackinson it's kind of hard to do yeah yeah I like it I like it um that's actually interesting because uh came in actually was the one who made that up last year like our first game last year we played South Carolina and I had like two or one and half or something like that and so came and was calling me that last year too so it was pretty interesting to see like the origins of that yeah exactly exactly okay you've legally agreed to give us 10%
of anything were you impressed jealous or something else which Javari Ritzies pick six against for jingles oh no that's that I mean I'm sure y'all saw the clip too like that was all him like there was literally like a shallow pat like it wasn't even like a screen or something the shallow he like tipped it up caught it and then heisman the quarterback while holding the ball like a loaf of bread in the other hand and like I don't know he's a freak for sure so I mean that was just straight impressed there I don't know I haven't had it interception here and I don't know if I had any high school either so really yeah that was that was pretty sick to see him doing that and then like running down the field next because I was on the field at the same time yeah yeah were there any moments where you wondered if he was going to run out of gas honestly no just because I like I mean doing like the workouts the whole summer with him like he's a three-tack but like he's not really because like he's just so free like he's big enough to do it but he's also so athletic for his size that yeah now he's a freak for sure so all right tell
us a little bit about growing up bow young bow tell us a little bit about your background up though hmm um I started playing football when I was like seven or so my dad played college football Yukon and my mom played college volleyball at Yukon so they were both there and so I always was around athletics pretty much my whole life we were like super competitive like anytime we get in trouble we'd be doing like push-ups and that stuff and I remember when I was like five years old like we'd have a game where like my dad would sit on the couch and we'd like go back basically doing like one-on-one like playing receiver and DB versus I have two brothers and sisters so very competitive household I started playing football when I was like seven or whatever mostly because my dad played football into my older brother I don't know I'm not sure if you all are familiar with the like the pop-worn or super bowl stuff where you like you go to yeah or lando so my older brother had done that a couple times so after that I was like okay I definitely want to start playing football started playing my dad was my coach and then we
end up doing the same thing we went to Super Bowl twice since seventh eighth grade and then from there is history high school football where do you fall in the siblings so I've one older brother me younger brother younger sister what's the game most likely to cause a fight if y'all are all playing oh definitely basketball my little brother was a very big uh he was quite the referee during some of that stuff and he'd always get mad and like call penalties and yeah definitely I don't know we played a lot of basketball we also we had like a our neighbor had like a football it wasn't it was just like a their front yard was like kind of like curved so we'd like play football on night every time and like you could throw the football over the house for like the deep balls and nice it was cool but yeah no we played we we were always outside growing up the whole time would you beat your little brother up um so it was kind of a thing where like he'd start ref it like and it would give me really mad and then like I'd like chase up to him and then he'd like kind of like be like what's that animal that like plays dead uh oh a possum yeah he'd be like a possum he'd
just lay down on the ground and then I kind of like get over him but like I would never actually do anything because like I don't know I didn't want to like actually hurt him and like him go tell my mom or something yeah exactly but uh yeah so there was a lot of that going on I'm sure he could tell you more but yeah you you were academic all ACC last year yeah and you're in the business school yep both those things are no joke how do you manage your time to do all these things successfully hmm it's a good question um I don't really know you just kind of I feel like if you care about something you can make time I'm not sure I've always been like a very big math person my whole life and luckily for the business school here that was like the big criteria like you'd do the calculus and the stats and the e-con so that was kind of right up my alley uh I'm not past my yeah and then also having like good friends to be around like I'm sure you on their will hearty and Connor are both in the business school with me too so like we kind of
been on the same track our whole career which has been pretty cool and been nice to have like other people around you to help you get better and stuff so yeah that sounds like a very intelligent uh household you guys have yeah you guys just like Friday night or or Saturday night after the game everybody's like out and you're like guys look we got we got some e-con we needed to celebrate like normal with calculus yeah I guess so I guess um what do you like to do outside of football hmm outside I've recently I've gotten uh into fishing a lot more which has been we uh my girlfriend has a beach house or they live at their actor from Morehead City and so I went fishing with her dad and stuff and it was really fun um I don't know we're I like to do very spontaneous things all the time I'm sure I can talk to y'all more about that later but I don't know yeah we I don't know me me car will do a lot of uh interesting fun things I don't
know we played a lot of uh pickleball and that kind of I don't know we did like a whole scavenger hunt one time it was funny I don't know do a lot of stuff like that but yeah fishing with the girlfriend's dad can be some pressure because like you want to do well but not too much how did you handle that um I it was kind of he's he was legit uh legit but he's lived his whole life I was not legit um I caught like maybe two fish the whole time but it was fun it was sometimes like the great thing about fidget is kind of like more of like just being out there and like the peaceful vibe was almost better than actually catching sometimes so I thought that was pretty cool you set up a scavenger hunt like well I'm well actually Connor will set it up and then he just like randomly like so like me and Connor were roommates will was not at the time and they just like randomly like put a note card outside my door and then me and Kate Law y'all know yeah and uh we had yeah they just did a whole spontaneous scavenger hunt and yeah
it was it was fun it was very cool day like um it was yeah it was like six p.m. or seven p.m. and we finished at like 10 p.m. but yeah they were so even in active yeah yeah it was it was it was fun though it was very very creative by car well yeah so there had there's been a lot that has happened with this team this year both on the field and off the field yeah how how have you guys tried to manage all of that means it's just it's a lot to happen to people yeah how have you guys tried to manage that maybe individually and together yeah I think it's definitely uh everybody handles it a lot different I mean just a lot of different especially like obviously all this stuff with Tiley can be very tough um for me I just tried to keep focused on my goals and trying to individually work to get better like and focus even more on football and in school and stuff and uh I don't know for other people I think I think that's kind of like the mindset of the whole team is just
we want to move forward and in the right way and I think that biweek was very important for us to kind of like take a time out reset mentally and lock back in and I think that showed pretty well these past two weeks you're talking about that first biweek yeah the first biweek what's the best advice you got during that time um I think kind of just that like just focus on what's important and like not let the outside noise affect you too much and almost like just shut your ears off to the outside noise and just focus on the next thing ahead of you and Coach Marrakeen have talked a lot about like you know you have like the high beams on your cars and like just turn the high beams off just focus on what's in front of you right there and yeah I think that was pretty good advice he seems like a really good coach to me have have you enjoyed working with him now he's awesome he's awesome yeah what is what what is that relationship been like what what has been beneficial for you what's been beneficial he's just the amount of knowledge he has is is pretty insane obviously
using the NFL for a long time and coach some pretty dang good players um but just like being able to watch film with him and be able to look at different tells or he does a big like run cut up every week for what the team's main runs are obviously like this week we're playing like week force and they do like the big mesh stuff and so I don't know just like little details that a lot of people don't tend to see that we can look closer as yeah he helps a lot of that um coach brown has talked a lot about and this has been a heavy topic for a lot of you're particularly with the defensive life about rotating you guys in more so that the amount of snaps that everybody plays isn't as high at the end of the year so maybe instead of playing 70 plays early in the season somebody was playing 40 or whatever do you think that's been beneficial like can you tell a difference do you think your teammates and your fellow defensive lineman can tell a difference um I mean there's definitely a big difference I think last year I was averaging like 15 snaps if
that a game and then now I'm these past few weeks I've been getting like 30 something so for me I mean I can't speak to the fact of like playing too much and then like your body hurting because that wasn't the case for me last year but I'm sure that like guys like came in and did probably feel that a lot more so being able to stay fresh is a big thing because like I don't know like say like you're playing the game for 60 plays and like they're like throwing the ball and you can't even put your best stuff on film really because you're tired and your gas that doesn't really work well for anybody like so like playing more plays is not necessarily equal more production out of touch defending that slow mesh feels like it would be tough yeah what's what's one or two things I can look for when I'm watching on Saturday that'll help me try to be able to figure out what they're doing the thing coach Collins has talked about is just like penetrating like if you sit there just sit on the block and just let them do their thing it's gonna put a big bind on the guys in the back end and because like they have to play the run and the pass that whole time so for us just
being able to penetrate and we have some really big strong defensive tackles so the quarterback will like step up really far when they're riding that mesh so for them to be able to get through the line and get in the quarterback's face and again like with him stepping up like getting your hands up it was a big thing too but for us on the edge is just getting off the ball and trying to get to him as fast as we can that's a big thing putting the pressure on them versus letting them dictate us that's that's probably the biggest thing I'd say all right three weeks left in the regular season yeah it feels it just feels like a different team I don't know how else to say it like what what in your mind is kind of the mindset of these last couple of weeks and what do you think will be important for you guys to continue to to play well yeah mindset wise I don't know I think I think we're just starting to focus on like the little things even more and just completely buying into that and then I don't know everybody is since since summer workouts we've always talked about
like we break everything down on champions and like we want to be the best thing that we can be and I think now we're kind of like getting towards that point and just finishing this year like going three and no in these last three weeks I don't I feel like that's very important to everybody and everybody's pretty bought into that that's my like the vocal time I feel like I'm talking about this you know just recently talking about how what I'm going to do for the runners I want to bring that home energy the he brought right so last year of course I'm sure he's been doing for years but the year when I spent my own he brought a lot of energy excitement and happiness in the room which is natural energy to where I only had to focus on me you know I didn't have to make sure other other guys are you know feels the type of way when it came in here because hump brought that you know the hump's not here but I saw a way different room I want to be that
guy to make sure it's an amptical practice everybody's hype we're taking a built team on period you know it's a low day something you know it's a discipline but like I want to make it feel like home's home so you're like you're a pair of the trip I want to bring that because that's what me and hump did to each other who had each other do something to get walked with lit so I want to do that I want to bring that energy I want to make bring more guys you know to do that you know yeah I want to do that from day one you know I kind of I want to do that from day one um um um I'm talking to them and obviously it's that time I spend the offices of the 4OTA started just being in my self-just thing about what the room needs you know because I know I do do well as one of the leaders you know my offense is that we need a guy like that is going to make sure the O-line is picked up ready to go every day I was held accountable little things don't happen to practice people are saying anything and how I believe maybe different than
somebody else maybe you know like to practice at least like to be positivity you know I mean so but he the energy yeah would be on just though I'd love to be on start to so I was kind of how the goal was um literally my whole life I wanted to get I felt team captain like specifically and I felt I wasn't a captain in high school wasn't a captain in college but I'm gonna make a joke I was in high school I feel like I'm not gonna be a captain like he's that I felt you know but that would be awesome you know but you know that happens I'd be great but not either way I want to assume a role as a captain from the perspective of guys until the video words and get back in that yeah I mean I can't say that um I mean I guess the biggest thing is that I felt it has felt like how you used to in the past but it didn't take just the first day OTAs it took train and left
and right once this season because I know what it was gonna be to share it so it took a lot of you know grips um just to get back to feeling like myself or they want OTAs and then I hold for the first week but now like today specifically just changing some small things with my feet that is it talking about the long coach about some things I'm doing my feet to get to that to sell my nutritional angle that I love to sit on I thought I felt great already but I felt even better I feel sorry I need more exercises tomorrow now I'm getting my feet back and how I like the right side and I'm on the left side so I'm on the right side I mean obviously I feel like in the league whether I left the right there's still going in this premier guy so obviously they're high expectations for the left and right tackle but um it's definitely like the the level of energy and like the expectation definitely taking the chemistry because now tonight it applies like that stuff has the tackle role you know so um so yeah I would say in terms
of communication as far as just even outside of the facility you just stuff like that I'd like really crazy that the tackle quarterback bond even more off the field I think has been something that's even the cool I got the text one day is a hey you put a left I was like you know yeah I've been training both I've been training both you know I I asked after the season they're like honestly you know we'll talk to you so play the season and I just got the text one I know I have this with the free agency then so I was like you know what I had a O-season right tackle so if I get the word I'm going I'm standing right tackle you know what I did before I built on that but I saw something I might as well as train the left tackle now as if we're going to be left tackle and I'd rather do that than train on right time we're going to call A to the left tackle I'm like who I didn't switch my feet you know what I mean so I'm like let me just prepare an advance I'll get it's got you know I think occasionally on third down there'd be a lot
of twists I was just not like it's automatic and I think that was my mindset for like the first half of the season like I didn't have to go once again with some pros like oh my gosh they did that I kind of figured like okay like this is this is the type of rush man again this is how this guy usually rushes if I get the vibe this is how the ends like the rush you know tackles at first year guys you got the premier patch on already know what it was going to be already you know will be every stud and honestly just knowing that's kind of an advantage to so you're not you're not you're not oh the problem twists my psyche it was never air in the end of it but it comes up and I was like three plays in a row and two minutes I knew that it was going to happen you so a lot of you know what I mean I'm watching more everybody else ain't rarely you know it goes out there occasionally third down I was like you know he's gonna take me you know what I mean so that effect it's kind of it's also kind of an engine away but it's also exciting okay I'm going to get the hardest to look you know those are real real reps you know the things I'm really out on
highway to kind of process that I was like I had when I told me let me know about I'm just gonna train it I was training all left till t.a.s I guess if I didn't hear anything about t.a.s I came in like so you know what I mean because just like I'm cool with training both continue I would be cool training both continually but I feel like anybody any position will feel like okay like you want as soon as possible give your feet kind of settle in your hips settle in your hands settle in a certain kind of way would it would have been harder to work both very good to you no but they're definitely but in terms of the development um it's definitely a lot faster to stay on all one side but I think having that the weeks that we had to transition with seasons over and like respond you know it could try to get up put up my car having weak things at a time right now but when it comes back I'm gonna show them to you on the house so I've got a house
not too far from so I told them I got that house like I got a yellow side you know what I mean so track um you know it's actually like you can you know uh catch his feet under him um you know I always think when you're in your rookie season you're going from bowl game I don't know Wisconsin play in a bowl game sorry Wisconsin I don't know but um you know personally I just think when you go from bowl game to training for the combine to you know rookie minicamps OTA's the you know many can I mean to train the camp the regular season you really don't get a time to really catch yourself um you know you understand to play book now um you can be more vocal um you know I think my absence the other guys have since um you know you need guys like that to step up and be ready for those opportunities yeah the same you have during the season was a more thorough what was um just
tightened down everything um you know my left side because I was overcompensating a little bit um but you know it was it wasn't anything that's lingers um you know I'll say this uh a groin's not like an ACL it's not like anything's ever gonna get back to it again and you know you know feeling good able to do everything squat and heavy um with power and speed so you know it feels good to get after you know what you think of what the team was able to accomplish it's not easy in terms of bringing guys like wrestling you know I think they're all good acquisitions but you know you never want to be known as a paper champ so I can't win the off season um I think the work gets done out here on the field it's done in the classroom um it gets done training uh you know and then you see where you're at in training camp and then you build on that um you know I think we got the right guys in the building um it's just about uh putting a completely month to can't have typical isn't to separate the business part of the game the actual football player
oh you know you always want to you always have to treat it like a business because um you know one day it's gonna end uh and that's been a job uh it's not like in college where you know you got four years guarantee um well now you don't know what the NIL knows crap but transfer portal portal but um you know you have to I still have love for this game and I still work my tail off and I still put everything into it um and that's not gonna change but um you have to know what you bring for the team and what you're what your value is. Can't be able to be able to be out there with your teammates today emotionally. Great you know um we got a new you got a new training staff and still learning the warm up a little different uh but uh you know I loved it uh you know just getting after it um learning new guys uh going through the same drills I've been doing by myself uh I actually like having more people around because like kind of
go stir crazy crazy when it's just you and another guy you're like damn I gotta go back up for another rep already um and so um you know it's nice to be up here and um give a chance uh be with my godson. Can we confident we'll get down with your emotion? oh I'm gonna try to remain pretty neutral because uh I don't want to be too either way um all I know is I want to be here um but we'll see what happens. It's my last year here I've had a great career here but uh look forward to playing actually. In what that second surgery you said at this time it was on the left side is the first time around on the right side right side during the season left side and that was just tightened down my quarter my core muscle um it wasn't the same as my ad doctor um you know you can ask Dr. Bradley Dr. Dr. Zuckerbron who uh did the surgery as well um you know if anything it's gonna help me
and you know make me a lot stronger for hearing up. We said you were training with another guy who have you come to me. Tyson oh I've been training with him for the last eight years um we've always trained together um we got a trainer up north uh shout out cohali who's my guy trained trained trained uh heath miller um brecchisel um multitude of guys that all respect um and we've just been getting after. Can we do very cute guys historically 35 they paid big contract and he that's held against you? I think there's not a lot of history behind it um but you know for me I look as I'm not looking to be like anybody else um you know my game is different from everybody else in the sleep you know um I like to think you know I can play the run in the past and that's where I'm different um you know um I remember last year Mike Teague just brought to my attention you know the thing that's really cool is you watch power lifters and you know my games build on power and technique and those guys go into their forties um and so um you know that's
what kind of research I'm doing the high-end scenes but um you know I we'll see what happens there's not a lot of history but um I'm here to make history and I'm here to you know when I know there's a roll here and you know have a great season. Do you have a set goal for yourself or how many years you want to play in the NFL or do you just take things here right here? You know um it was it was top answering that question right after the season um I will say this guys I can't keep answering that question right after the season that is not fair to the season that's not fair to my family you know but in my mind I got three years and I want to maximize them I want to play at a high level and I want to go deep into playoffs um and you know we got a good team and I'm going to do my part to be ready for all those situations. You've been playing on practice in when you report to the church or it's a possibility that you might hold in and of course the issues. I have not even thought that far and I'm taking a day. Okay uh you know uh I told my agent and we talked about it and I mean we were cool coming out here
you know I'll be here for many um and then I'll be there for training. I don't know what the work entails but um when we get there we'll cross that bridge. Why would you want to remain as steel or produce for years? Um you know um there was a conversation between me Omar and Mike T and there's certain guys are one helmet guys you know and I want to be one of those one helmet guys and you know there's a there's a hunger and desire there but it doesn't mean just hanging it up and calling it a career um to me I think um you know I got more bullets to fire and uh you know I'm excited to do that. What's the meaning last one? Can you and Russell Wilson are going to be out there with Walter Man? What's Peyton Man of the Year patch? I saw Russ's um on social media uh but um I have an idea to see it uh I like the surprise happens when it happens but uh you know it's cool to
have another Walter Peyton Man of the Year winner um you know I think uh it's an honor to be there and uh I'll say one thing I won't be here I'm just telling you guys so it's not a big deal um I won't be here because I have to do a Walter Peyton Man of the Year thing on Thursday so um it's not like I'm skipping so all right uh but uh you know it's an honor to be with Russ and you know you know it's an honor of uh doing things in the community you know doing great work and um you know the cool thing is as much as we get honored and nominated for these things um the work doesn't stop and I can see that with Russ this foundation um you know we had an event for our foundation and my mom was quick to you know tell Russ hey we need the partners somehow and I was like mom let's just enjoy that but uh you know it's uh it's really cool to you know be a part of a league group all right thank you thank you you know um appreciate the time um since you guys are both throwing forward
finalists I'm wondering do you have a relationship or no jade at all and what are your thoughts on his game uh he's a tremendous player he's played really well this year um watching his film he's made a lot of plays and they do a really good job on their defense but I don't I don't know a person thank you our next question is going to come from Donovan bridge forward Donovan go ahead I think he went through his question we will go to Kurt Moles hey Caleb uh I just could ask you about the Michigan saying uh Texas obviously went up there in Harvard beat them and and uh you know had your issues with them you put his stock in that or was that Texas Michigan game just so long ago it doesn't doesn't matter at all uh I mean at this point this season it's one to go home so really whatever happens in the past doesn't have any stock or anything doesn't mean anything so um we're we have to play on Friday and that's
really all that matters we're gonna take two more from zoom before turning it back our first one is gonna come from Stephen from Cleveland dot com go ahead the fun I'm sorry hey Caleb we've seen you were talking about the Ohio State Office the success that they've had obviously Jeremiah has been a big part of that what's it been like this year going against him in practice and you know after doing that does it surprise you at all to see him having a success he's had as a freshman no it doesn't bring surprises um it was pretty pretty easy to see the talent that he has and the blessings that God has put on his plate um but it's always a it's always a challenge going against Jeremiah and the other receivers and Mecca and Karnel and practice and even guys like Brandon and his impression riders they they do a great job bringing looks for the defense and uh create a lot of obstacles I found a question from zoom is gonna come from Dan Hope go ahead Dan Caleb you Quinn had a lot of success against you guys when you played him at Alabama last year just what do you remember from going up against him last year
and what can you learn from that game really smart quarterback knows how to operate their offense puts the ball in the right places and then uh course arkison does a great job putting him in position to win all right back to you yeah thank you rob all our Columbus dispatch Caleb GT and jack land opposite sides and they is opposite off the field as they are on in terms of personality and just the people they are uh they're offices but they uh they're also like one of the closest people I know they spend a lot of time together um they've come from different sides of the country so they're different people for sure but they're both really great people are really great men um sorry spec both um I'm not gonna do that I'm sorry I'm not gonna do that it's gonna ask the war and fight again throughout the throughout the season we would always see you
on Wednesday nights you and latin would be some of the last people off the field uh for the things that you're working on after a practice always the same is it a routine what are the things that you're hoping to get out of those extra moments after practice uh it's a routine pretty much the the keys that we need to go into the game with and then also changes week to week on based on what our jobs are gonna put us into doing um so every week we go through the same things and then we add certain things that we do for the week for the what the team that we play is gonna ask us to accommodate Bill we've been a once in a while miss this batch yeah I already got one here okay uh join me go up and call miss this batch kill them when takes us uses play action and they can use play action a fair bit what's what do they do well and those spots most can see you guys in those moments with Quinn they uh they do a really good job with iKandy uh and it creates a lot of challenges for defense in order to see if it's runner pass and see um
because that's when they're gonna take their shots too as well so really just having great eye discipline seeing the line is seeing what is telling us um so that's this what it does keep right uh Nick Walker and Letterman role hey you guys had a pretty good game plan for Tyler Warren when you guys played him you guys have another Texas has a good tight end and Gunnar Homme what do you guys gonna have to do to limit him and how do you think about his game uh he's a really good player he makes a lot of plays and he's has a lot of receiving yards this year um so really just do the same thing we've done all year just be be disciplined in our responsibilities and if you're on them you gotta make a play when it comes right one of the mandra bill that uh claimon doc how when you think their receivers is kind of a whole you know they spread ball around seems like a lot of what stands out about you know the way that they can spread ball around with them guys a lot of really good athletes um I played with Isaiah Bond last year who's a really great receiver a lot of speed um and then all the receivers have made a lot of plays so I mean
everybody has been on the peasant queue if we're gonna stop them and have a do a really good job brother all year Tim made Letterman role yeah kill but you moved up here and I don't have to tell you when you move it basically a year ago and stuff it was a little bit of a leap of faith because you know you you know how many athletes are on this team get athletes to stuff but when did you really feel this defense come into its own and then then pass that man watching in the Rose Bowl you you're recognition of what was coming seem to be on point did it feel like that I mean you personally um I think the defenses played really well throughout the season uh I think we've had games where we played better and games where we haven't put it all together but I think that's how all defenses are um so I can't say there's a certain moment where I think we put it together um but was it second part of your question you think you're seeing really on point uh against Oregon about recognizing what was what was coming I mean you were really active
out there directing and things like that did did it feel like that I guess uh I feel like as Luke said earlier the preparation that we put in goes into that and just feeling comfortable and what we're doing comfortable and what we're seeing with the other teams I feel like that's uh that allows us to play fast and can uh me and Laketon to communicate to everybody else do I miss anyone for questions here Steve how long and 24 hours on this ball yeah Caleb but you came to high state to play for national championship and there were a lot of ups and downs throughout the season just to be in this position the last four teams still live just you feel validated by that and did you always have faith that this is how it was going to turn out I came to a high state to become a better player and to help the team be as good as it can be not to win a national championship not like that wasn't the only goal for me coming here uh really just wanted to be in the team and be my be with the brotherhood um but it's a it's a great feeling being in the final four and being with the team and everything that comes with that but it's a blessing to be here
and one final question Bill were been once a club this past yeah I did want to follow when I talked just at that time of the game you said when they scored their first and second touch down you were really hot on the sidelines what was what was your message to the team and you know that's a good off that they're gonna score against most people why were you so hot really just because we didn't execute which let them score so um we've done that a lot which is something we can do in these big games and these games where uh it's winter go home so we got to make the plays when they come and get our competitive excellence as coach Dases make the play where your numbers call gillib thank you very much hey everybody let's say first let's try to get a bit like so far oh it's been good a lot of learn obviously uh just trying to adjust everybody just in this game and see where you fit in that but uh it's been good hey that's good at the game game action first time since playing in a bowl game how'd you feel oh I felt good uh good good way to get your feet wet especially do it close to home here uh
they're special to me so it was good I'm glad I glad to happen that way you know what your family there yeah had a bunch of family there uh I got to see a bunch of people so yeah couldn't ask for anything more I wouldn't have been thinking about it well it's been good I mean just trying to it's just a different way of play different terminology different it's a whole different scheme so just learn how they want things done compared to how you used to do how you used to do things it's really the what's it like being in that tight end room everybody's got that skills yeah everybody's different but y'all you're so much same thing right yeah no it's a great room a lot of really good guys uh grown really close with a lot of those guys so uh everybody helps each other uh really nice learner from Dalton breadin those guys I mean Dalton's done it for a really long time so he helps me a lot with things that really aren't coachable things you know I mean I mentioned how the family is beginning but what about working out here at this high school you're still in Ohio that's gotta feel good and I don't know if your high school's like this man it can't feel the close to a different name myself yeah I went to Lexington uh it's about
the eighth of the size of this place uh yeah this is not like my high school but this is a healthy place uh it's super cool to be home and just be back and give you a little sense of comfort I guess for me especially being my way for as long as I've been so I wasn't in the kind of war around the city if you've ever seen a bunch of blackout fans that have wanted to get your autographs and get your picture of the minute I don't get I don't go out of the hole I actually went home yesterday I went back to the farm for a little bit uh which was great for a couple days he did with my family and stuff and see my grandparents and everything so it was good uh but I really haven't been out enough to know so I try and keep her inside yeah oh that's a good question I don't think that's for uh for me I'm just trying to give I mean every time you can be as you can play this game for 50 years and there's always going to be something you leave to feel with like I wish I would have a better not area I wish it would have been better and some other you know I mean like it's never going to be this is absolutely perfect so like to me that's
right right now the hardest part of this is just mental toughness of it all I mean physical toughness I mean you either have it or you don't in my opinion so I mean I've always felt like I was kind of bred in that area with things and that's just kind of way happens naturally so just to play that's kind of how we roll thank you guys we gotta get you on the button it was just different man I could feel the difference without you running that 225 I feel like I'm running like the flash right now so yeah my speed I definitely feel quicker and more explosive just you know get out the ball and you know just continually working on my short area first as flinkly as possible so do you want me to explain this room oh you guys got that one? you know what I thought about the room is that we don't always be a brotherhood and always be at one all the time so what's been your experience so far here and versus the expectation obviously coming in there's an opportunity to play early we have a lot of opportunity to play a lot that how have you seen this place change you and hasn't been about you expected? been off the charts like just you know they developed me like some day one like sister they
are stepped on campus we know workbaths we talked about my in habits where I need to get to my body weight what I need to improve on till you know development to NFL running back and have opportunity you know to get to that level and just don't invest it into me as much as possible like they and they are they invest a lot you know does it surprise you I think West Virginia is a powerful school very very the program you see the difference quickly when you're getting into a place like last week? definitely the resources around Ohio State you know if definitely you know have a we have a larger frame of resources around here so that's definitely one of the biggest things that I could say that's different you know my friends were in the first CJ when you were back in December before you even started talking to Ohio State what thank you want to know what you know the risk is are you gonna coach exchange is that primarily the it was a lie until you know you have to think about your family you and like what do you want to get out of this this is my last opportunity you know guarantee I'm sure to have a chance
to play football because the next level is not promised you have to as you say earn that so I just you know I just took a chance of myself you know you got better than the 7 all times did you have any previous relationship with the clock now not at all what what kind of sit out from your first question to him he said he's gonna challenge me and help me develop until a great man and a player he didn't talk too much about football we know we talked more of these personal life things is it helped to have seen like when Sean come in last year as a transfer you know I've succinct back right away like this is that something you would get out of the way? definitely you know I watch a Q game you know to see that Ole Miss when I kind of jumped on the scene to the West of Dean so I definitely like analyze the game a lot and you know him just being able to draw how to see it I would say a big difference but you can see the little intensibles that he added on to him to help his game you know develop in that way to you know now I have an opportunity to be a high jacktricking and I said I just got to 230 miles up and it's a 2-30-80 he says he likes you 230 what why is that? 226 actually why did you want to do something
why did he want to be more explosive and you know have a more short area burst that's something that I like in my game and he can tell me to work on that and that that's amazing you know he's gonna coach him hard but he loves it and he does it because he's on the side that's you know he loves on the way like you go coach him hard he go push you and you go hold your account and the bait does that that's his love for us what are you been asking for overall and how you've been activating into the program amazing I got one of my great fans right here you know he kind of like you know that's big growth he kind of like you know take me under his name tell me the things to do with nothing you know because he was transferred just like me too so he tells me like they don't do that we don't do that here do this and do that here so you know just you know the family you know that I got other guys on the team who I pre-souped against like Jeremiah Smith Brandon and his canyada so I kind of was like familiar with like a couple of things on the team and they kind of blame me around as as I was a transition to the program he's called we're for this little thing he did
to get this 226 you guys the guy when some of the changes that you made they get he lost that he elests the dietitian she helped me schedule our meal planning the times I need to eat what I need to eat what I need to stay away from what's how I need to go to bed stay on a team that allows me to you know contain me to help us quickly and as how should I say this as quickly and as the like the right way it's possible that is like to tune it down and make it like you know we'll still work for you as so I can be a effective runner-backs. Changing your diet like a different things. He's a real moment here like James he was you know he's great competitor when I first got here in the winner he pushed me band and they out I still remember this was doing sleds and you know he was kicking my butt band and they out but you know that has helped me you know and through my game the step up as a
you know just the style of the offense you know we we're more balanced you know we more like the NFL same as you would say we need to ask actors effectively and use them to the best of their abilities. I really don't know anything I love your con about wanting to go to an office and have her balance and maybe you know keep deep that's his honest not at all I didn't consider it. I didn't even know that I was pretty thank you for telling me that. So whatever was Jay and Coach Tristan you can do us one more time. What was the first thing that you did to get ready to drop? I had to go away that was 235 last year now I'm 24245 you know it's different from when you're blissing off-bomb being on the edge and consistently hitting
