Cody, first of all, welcome to the Alhazard. You guys all had your game phase, just talk about the men's combo. Yeah, I mean, for us, this is just another game. We're in the playoffs, it's not. It's a big goal game, but it's another game on the schedule for us. We're treating it like that, and it's not really a big blow on my vacation for us. Yeah, you can pick me here a couple of days, and you're going to play the game. How ready are you guys play the club? No, we're all tied. We'll be more prepared to do now, and our coach is something that's ready for us, but I'll put a good week of work together. And I know we're ready. Obviously, Quinn got started in the high school. He's a well-being now, and he's really tight at the community part. We know a bunch about it, and I mean, also just for watching, he's been playing for a lot of time now, so we've got a lot of lots of help to learn from him, and it's going to be a good game, it's going to be a good game, and we're going to look to take some time away from him and play with him.
You heard that coming? I heard that. I mean, you know, I say this up sometimes, I try to keep going, and I take it to my head a little bit, because a lot of those governments say they go good, but I know we actually do much of it. Yeah, I know. I can't know how safe we are, but I love this place. I wanted that to be a point of mind for you to stay in this place a while ago. I hope for you. I know. I know. I know. Yeah. I know. I know. I know. I know. I know. I know. I know. You never heard that one, but I'm using it. Yeah. I mean, I think I'm definitely the new agent of God for War. It's more money instead of turning the world to, I guess, but I love everything about Ohio State.
I love Hawaii. That's one thing about our team, the old rocker, no matter what people make, I want to be able to stay with that. And I feel so many good, like long lasting friendships with these guys. I've been in these teams with them, so I want to change what I'm doing. We're creating. Yeah. I mean, I always treated you as if I was. I'm a guy who's a couple of people. I know. I know. I know that my time with them, and I'd be ready to take my take what's happening. I'm just happy that I was able to do that and still trying to put better view to be able to. Where is the top of the score? The first part of it was amazing. We're very excited about the flagger level and how big of a friend you're in. I mean, they're a good team. Our country is a good preparation.
We practice hard and we want to make sure we get everything we can. We have a little detail we can. I think Coach knows a really good job of that. I think we need to continue to do that because everything that happened last week doesn't matter if you don't do this. You're going to do it. Our goal is to do better than we did last week and to a controlling game when we get like this. You've got to see the real world. You've got to see the real world. Everyone's trying to be the next guy to make a good score. You put clockwise quickly. I think it's the biggest thing football is going to be a fun sport. We're going to have to go out there and make plays and have fun. You really need brothers with each other. The only time you really make plays when you're having fun, you're not having fun. You're not making plays. You really have to go to hand in hand and we're just out there trying to help you. With guys going in, going out, you moving back to guard, going coming in. What was that like in the moment having to adjust on the fly?
We're built for this. I moved the center and Steve moved the left guard. We're all pretty much interchangeable. We're going to all play all positions across the board. When it comes down to that time, things like that going to happen. We're ready for it. AJ came in and given all of the circumstances for him coming off the back. All those guys are ready. We prepare during the week, during training camp for situations like this. It's nothing new to them. Guys are calm, cool, collected. They have good composure. Being elevated, being active, being a starter. We're all in the same boat, ready to fly. I know it's a next men up mentality, but in real time when that was happening, the guys were going down and switching. What was the challenge for you in the whole time? Physically and mindset. I mean, we're all pretty much interchangeable. If I need to go to left guard, center, whatever, but I need to go to center and left guard, however, it's not really a big shock or a moment.
We train for this. We're prepared for this. So when it happens, we're able to execute. Why don't you start the week in the switch? To left guard. I think half time? Well, coming in, it's a rookie in the crowd and the noise. I know you said you guys all trained for this, but what can you tell us about how he... He's a man. He's built for this moment. He's done it for his whole life. At the end of the day, it's just a game. We keep trying to keep everybody calm, cool, and collected. We're five as one. We help each other out. Whenever we need to, we do it. He was ready. He was built for it. He's going to be a great player. You're obviously no stranger to Matthew's toughness. What was it like just seeing the way he let this off? I think I... That guy's a warrior. 36 years old. He's taken some hits and some things and some dent. And he's able to get back up and keep it rolling. You know, he's still got that fire to him. You know, we love having him back there. Sean has always said after a loss, don't let the team beat you twice.
But to have the lead late in the game, it's all the injuries and not win. You describe that level of frustration. I mean, it's the NFL. It comes down to seconds and inches and you've seen it all through past couple of days and today. You know, it kind of down to the little things. And we'll see him again. And I apologize if you were asked this, but what was it like for you personally to walk on the other days? It was kind of surreal, man. It was nice. It was a lot emotional seeing everybody. I wasn't a kid when I came here, but I grew into more of a man. And these people here have definitely helped lay that blue print for me. It helped me out big time. I can't thank them enough for that. I know you've looked at film yet, but how you feeling about the D. I feel really good, you know, saying it through because everything, careful all summer, and OTA is showing up. You know, we stood out ground. We came up short a little bit, but in that end day, you know, it's a lot of effort. I see a bright future for us. I think that thing on the overtime drive, I mean, you guys have been stopping them.
And then they just seem to kind of get a role. Yeah, you know, just something that we just need work on, you know, got to play around better on that and just kind of eliminate the big plays. That's all that it comes down to, but overall, I just felt like we just came up short on that. That's the offense. It's kind of struggling to find its footing early in the game. What did you guys feel like you like to do as a defense team? You know, that's the only thing you want to do. I feel like we just need to step up, you know, I know they would have come through and have our back. So I just tell them the offense, you know, we got y'all back, you know, just keep going, y'all doing what we're going to keep on trying to hold in the best we can. So how did the visit go? Oh, it was great. Yeah, I loved it. Well, the staff here, you can tell it has really good family ties, strong connection. What were some things that you were looking for on your visit? Whether it's, you know, talking to coach Nerval, skinny, I guess what was important to you on this visit? So, I mean, for me, I mean, like, this was kind of like a big decision for me, where I decided to kind of like not fish my degree of rest and then from the court of the psyche.
I was fine to play so I can develop the most and then just had to go to my coach, you know, final place where I could face a good competition, not only in games, but also in practice as well. And part of the most important is just finding a good guy that are dedicated to winning, dedicated to being great because I mean, we have a team of me guys who aren't serious about not to be great. It's waste of time with money, so I mean, until the problem, I'm not big green with the culture being kind of important to me. Being around coach, you know, handed a, what was kind of the things that you noticed around him, just whether it's how he is or just what your thoughts of him being around him most of the time. He's an incredibly detailed guy. Yeah, I got that for sure from, like, watching a film, like he broke down, just like some game film with me, and he also kind of broke down. So the guys like he, he's coaching the past that are similar to me. And you know, it was, you know, it was just show how good of a coach he is, you know, getting no coach from a bellgroom in his experience, what has happened to me?
It was good. He's a very passionate guy. And I mean, I love that, like, a head coach should have that and, you know, you can tell how much he cares about, you know, what the guys want to program, about the psych, being dedicated, being driven to win, to succeed. What did they tell you about the opportunity here as far as meeting a player, you were sort of at a position, and you know, you all friends of mine? Well, I mean, they did. They see me at a left-hack, and I'll be a good fit, you know, coming in. I was, I was a coach, no ball, stress, you know, also, they're great. I want some linemen in the portal that have lots of graceful people saying that, they feel wise on how they get fit when it comes to, such as, what you guys do, what FSC does, and a little sight that people hear. What's kind of the ultimate feeling now about FSU? Have you saw this big experience with them? What's kind of the feeling about them? Yeah, it's definitely good feeling. It's great. I'm glad I was actually able to come down here to them. Some calls and folk also are nice, but, you know, in person is a lot different.
It's the game to know the staff, your game, to know coach, or coach, or ball, it was a great experience overall. Who else have you checked out during this process? What are their schools? I've talked to some other, so I've talked to a house, say, in Iowa, and A&M, really just, yeah, that's what I've been, I've tried to keep the short-cutting, I've tried to keep it sweet, or really need to be cornered up to schools. I mean, that's not the main priority. Are you entering decision mode now, or do you intend to take some trades in urban January? Yeah, I'm done with this. I'm going to be wanting to sign. Sometimes I'm a full-crisis. What all? For those of us who only seem to make the highlights of what are cutting your strengths in areas that you're looking to improve on? So, shrink wise, I would say probably just move it. I mean, I don't want to go short. I would be very loved for a 300, 45 pound guy, I have to go short. I fight this evident off-fill. It's like I've done my stances. I think it would be so big,
it would be awesome for people. But at the same time, also, this is neat, consistent, and hand-placing. A bunch of forwarding, generally, just like neat. I mean, if you're a big, strong guy, and you totally do so much, you don't have a right to need so. That's a big reason why I want to have a good, a like, a personal role. So, we'll find that's a neat, to be precise with everything. I bet that's kind of what you all think. It's a pretty cool thing. A lot of role-hours in the fans, because they always travel. But are we a pro-Texas crowd for the most part? Do you guys kind of thrive off that? Do you like that kind of being the enemy? I guess. You can say that, but we don't really try to focus on the fans. We just want to produce on the field. If it's a way game, home game, we just want to go out there and execute. Right. Cameron T. Grovins in the athletic. It's highly, if there's a lot to say, when you guys all came back, you saw some of the roles that Steve had gone, could be these last two games.
We have 12 sacks. You guys really aren't blitzing the time. It's not even the start. The bench guys can yada. The fans come in. What's it been like to see this realises potential and kind of, with the kind of recap, glass of ease? I say we always knew what we had in our room. You know, it's just, now it's just showing up. Teams are scheming us different ways. And it's allowing certain players to make certain plays. And I think, you know, we got so many guys in the room. We have two that can be ones anywhere. We have three that can be ones anywhere in the country. But they all decided to stick here and grind this thing out with the guys they came in with. And, like I said, I think we have a great group who can make plays anytime. When you guys get 8 sacks in a game, but also hold a deep and hold on to it. It's a minus 24 rush yards in a game. What is that like? What is that say about the job you guys did? I said. I think it's a great feeling, you know, looking up at the scoreboard and seeing like a negative. Definitely.
But, you know, it's just like all the work we put in over the summer over the season. You know, we've been building this defense to where it is now. And, like I said, when we're executing and we're at a high level, it's hard to, you know, do anything with us. Behind the Jeremy Birmingham, the bot cat. I'm not going to ask you to call out officials, okay? But, I do want to ask you, have you ever been told before? Yeah, I think our whole deline gets held, you know, every game. I don't know what the refs are seeing or what's going on with that. But, you turn on the tape and really look at it. We're held almost every play. Is there something that you can do guys be better actors? Can you be more dramatic about it? What do you need to cast an happen for that thing to get called in your favor one time this season? We can be actors, but you know, we don't really teach nothing like that. But, I don't know if it's where I'll stay, be like, you know, letting things go or what it is. But, it's been, you know, pretty bad. I know y'all see it too. It's every play, almost every game.
We got you. Adam, we have a chance to see a glimpse of Coach Day's pre-game speech. The intensity that you've seen for them for the last two games in the playoffs. Is that different than you've seen throughout the year? And what does that do for this group before you go out on the field? I want to say it's different. He's been like that his whole year, but it's just now getting recorded and posted. But, definitely when you see your head coach it's fired up like that. It likes the fire and you, you know, go out there and do better. And, you know, you can't thank Coach Day enough because, you know, he's our leader over this team. And he's like that. He makes you want to, you know, go out there and do great for him for like the guys around us. Scotty, we're going to go to you with a couple on Zoom. Yes, sir. We're going to start with Andy Anders. Andy, go ahead. Yeah, Ali. Texas has a, runs a lot of outside zone schemes that you're just watching. What's important for the thing those kinds of plays on the ground?
And I guess just, you're striking out those kinds of so to speak. He said that again. I don't need to get there. Yeah, just Texas runs a lot of outside zone in their run game. Running schemes. Just what's important for defending that kind of plays in the tackle? For a detackle versus stretch team, you always want to talk about penetration, like penetrating the line and not catching. Because once, you know, you penetrate the stretch, it basically stops the stretch and makes them, you know, cut back to, you know, unblocked players. So really just attacking this game and not catching. Next question is going to come from Dan Hope. Dan, go ahead. I think you were in a freshman class with Quinn. Now you're playing against him a few years later. Just what's that like for you? You know, Quinn's my guy. You know, he's a great competitor, great quarterback. I think it'll be fun going against him, you know, trying to get him running around.
Next question comes from Kurt Bulls. Kurt, go ahead. I don't know if there's one thing you can pinpoint why y'all been so dominant. I would think maybe it comes back under the physical brand of football. Do you feel that's going to be the survivor in this game? Who's the more physical team? I would say definitely the more the most violent team, you know, the team that plays the fastest, executes the most. And you know, you see their game playing the most is going to win this game. I found a question will come from Stefan from Cleveland.com. Ty Lee, what's kind of your relationship been like with Ty Hamilton, especially as the seasons progressed and just how in sync? Do you feel like you two are playing on a defensive line together? Me and Ty are, you know, we've been roommates for the past two years. We live in the same apartment complex. We played a game together. It's really like one of my best friends on the team.
We talk about a lot of football things. So we're really on the same page with a lot of plays, teams like to run against us. And it could be some stunts we've run. We're always connected in some kind of way. Jerry, back to you. Great, thanks. We've got that. Just a couple more questions. Joey, come up and Columbus, this bad. Ty Lee, what does it say about your defensive line and how pride for you guys when you can get 8-Sacks, 13-Tagels for loss, that having to bring a ton of extra guys and pressure by you. You can just go forward and do a lot of that. I'll say cool to store our coach, Coach Jay. This is a lot of technique. And, you know, sometimes it doesn't show up because, you know, team scheme you different ways. But when you have a team one dimensional, like they have to pass the ball, that's when all the, you know, the pass rush technique and stuff comes out. And I think we've gotten Tennessee and Oregon to those situations where they had to pass the ball. And, you know, just let us rush free instead of worrying about the run. If that makes sense. You guys just, what do you know is one of one of those pass rush situations, till I was here, somebody sacks and TFLs?
Yeah, I'll say we're definitely winning way more 101s now. And, you know, they're not keeping as many guys in the box to block us because they have to, you know, they're trying to come back. So, I think it's, like I said, it's just cool to the offense, you know, creating these big leads and making teams one dimensional. Before we left, David Bigouz, Ben WCME. Tyler, we've talked about how better the team has gotten to getting off the fast starts on both sides of the ball. But there has been some scoring late in the first half. Like I said, the scene against Oregon. Has there been renewed emphasis on controlling the middle eight? And how important will that be against Texas? Definitely, you know, that's one of Coach Day's biggest points, you know, controlling the middle eight. You control the middle eight, you like chances of you winning that game goes, you know, sky rockets. Definitely, verse 10 to see it. Oregon, we give up touchdowns, you know, lay in the second half. I mean, first half. But, you know, we just got to keep our full on the gas. We can't let up, like at all, because these teams we're playing are great teams. Like Texas is a great team. You know, gray offense, gray offense, a line, gray quarterback, great receivers, great running backs.
So, you know, we just got to just keep executing like we know we can and, you know, see how it plays out. Okay, final question for Tyler Lee here. Dim May, Letterman Rowe. Tell me, you know, Aaron Donnelly, you should talk about everybody's hurting at this time of the year. But when the lights come on and the snap goes, what goes off in a guy like yours, mine, I mean, from the standpoint of making the play. I mean, can you explain that that people don't get to play down in the middle of it all? I'll say, you know, like I said, you're right. Everybody has heard around this time. You know, we're in, we're in, what, 15th week, 14th, you know, deep in the season. You know, you just got to, you just got to show up. That's my mindset. You just got to show up. No matter what I'm going through, I got to make that play. I got to be disruptive, you know, just to help my team out. Because when I'm on my A game, you know, everybody else can, you know, feed off of me or we can feed off for like, you know, JT Jack tie. But I said, you know, Coach, make always says like nobody cares. Like it's true. Nobody really cares if you're a hurry, if you're injured.
You just got to go out there and play and make plays. Just a little bit. Explain the drive you have personally to get to through this next one into the next one. But I know it's one step at a time, but you know, he came back, etc. Explain people what's going on in your brain about your motivation. I'm a motivation, you know, we all have our wise, you know, while we're doing things, you know, we have family, you know, family here, our team, our brotherhood. But, you just got to, he want to do right for your brothers, you know, on this team, you know, we're trying to win the big thing. We're not just, you know, trying to go win two games and lose. We're trying to win the big thing, you know. As long as we stay motivated, stay, you know, humble, like, you know, take the rap poisoning, you know, things like that and just execute and just play our hardest, you know, that will be fine. Thank you very much. So that's the house of Spring, the big old Max, who had been healthy?
Yes, sir, I feel very healthy. Obviously coming off a season and ending injury last year. I feel really good, feeling better than ever to be honest. Even better than I did before the season last year. So it's been a great spring so far. How does the point of being here, your office at the great start last year? Yeah, I mean, it was, it was a hard time. I mean, it's definitely not easy going through any injury, especially during the season like that. But, you know, it builds character. I think it's good for me in the long term. Also built that for the time of the season. Oh, for sure. Yeah. Saw some key pieces coming there and produced at a high level. What do you think, George? George is a stud. Once he gets healthy, he's going to be great. He's working really hard right now. He's going to, he's going to have a great season this year. Personally, how exciting is it for you to be kind of your position now this year? Yeah, it's super exciting. You know, I got a lot better feel for the offense this year. Really good rapport with Hudson and it's been a fun spring so far.
So just got to keep, keep carrying that on and see where it takes us. Obviously, when you're sideline, you're not playing how important is it to stay like mentally ready and mentally get those reps so that when you come into the spring, you can improve. Definitely. I mean, that's all it is really just mentally. Envisioning the plays, envisioning making the plays and every night, you know, I think about it probably every day. So it was, it was a big part of it for sure. How have you gotten better? I think just understanding the defenses and understanding where the quarterback wants me at a specific time. And, you know, building that trust with him is huge and I think I've been doing a pretty good job of that. How does that relationship with you and Hudson developing the year two? Yeah, it's developing great. I mean, we have a great friendship off the field. So, you know, that helps a lot on the field as well. So we have a great connection, you know, both on and off the field and it only helps. Your brother's coming right? Yeah, yeah. So you'll be here in May. It'll be a lot of fun.
It'll be a lot of fun having him up here. What do you need to see on this team on Saturday? I think just, you know, go out there and play hard, limit the mistakes. And at the end of the day, it's just being consistent with what we do and playing hard. So that's why I want to see it for sure. I feel like everyone's worth a pair for this spring game. Oh, for sure. I think we're way ahead of last year and I'm excited to see where it takes us. Anything on DeBibber or the freshman? Yeah, Drew Bibber. Yeah, he's getting healthy now. He's looking great. He looked really healthy today. And I'm super excited to play with him. He's a lot of fun to play with. Just how quick is this turnaround? You guys just started practicing a couple of weeks ago. Now you have a spring game to get to. It's pretty quick, but, you know, I like it. I like it a lot. So it's fun to get out there and play, you know, 11-11. Put the ball down and go. I mean, that's the goal. That's the goal every day. You know, that's what I'm reaching for. And whether I get it or not, who knows, but that's what I'm reaching for every day.
There'd be a leader like how he is. I mean, he's just unbelievable leader. And we all lean on him. He runs his whole team. And he knows that. We'll go as far as he goes. Jeremy Birmingham, the podcast. We talked a little bit last week just kind of you being the becoming one of the emotional leaders of this team. As you never walking off the field, they're half-time on Wednesday. I have to be down there by the locker room. I was the only person taking photos of you guys down there, which is weird. But everyone looks super nice. You were up 34 to 8. And it looked like you got to down by 26 points. Did you feel something different about the focus at that point of his team? Or is it just a bit of modernism of what's going on right now? Because it seemed different. I just think the job wasn't done. Maybe we had nothing to be excited about at the moment. We were excited during the game. We were making a place. But at that time, you go back to 0-0. They scored a thing in a half.
We knew they got the ball back. The defense wasn't quite happy that they gave up that touchdown at the end. And we knew they get the ball back coming out. But we was excited because we knew the job wasn't done yet. Bill Rebellion, Columbus, this way. You were a five-star guy. And then there's Jeremiah. Does he like all you guys in the room? I mean, I'm not sure. It's probably something you got to ask him. But Jeremiah has played with a lot of great guys throughout his career. He's seen all the talent you can see in the world. But I don't know if he's ever in all. Oh, yeah. I'm not surprised at anything he does now. I've seen him since we were nine years old. Anything he does, anyone hand-kid, I've seen. I'm not surprised at anything he does. When he was nine, do you know this is something special we've met?
A year at nine? Yeah, I mean, coaches were coming up to us complaining that we weren't nine years old. Can we get their IDs and stuff like that? So I mean, there's definitely some footage. We got to go find, but the place we used to make when we were younger and just to see where he is now is amazing. And it seems very unaffected by all of the starter. Yeah. How does that happen? I think how he was raised. He's very level-headed. He knows his goals and what he wants to get done in life. And this is just one step of the way for him. Can I throw a back to Texas for a couple of questions on Zoom, Scotty? Yes, sir. We're going to start with Defond from Cleaning.com. Go ahead. Brandon, I want to go back to what you were talking about with Coach Day earlier. You know, whenever he talks about this team's success, he says all the credit goes through players. It seems like the players think that he deserves some of the credit. How big, how influential has he been during the turnaround you guys have had these last few weeks?
He's been huge, man. Coming here after that team with North Wallace, he knows heart breaking, of course. But we came in here. We had a leadership meeting. And he was in here. I mean, and then we had a team meeting after that. Hearing the stuff he had to say, and we had to say, going back and forth, we knew we would have his back no matter what. I mean, there's a lot of stuff set about him and his family and stuff like that. But here we're a brotherhood and we're a family. And we're going to stand by him no matter what. Our next question is going to come from Dan. Hope Dan go ahead. Brandon, I mean, I'm sure you came in here to Ohio State thinking you'd probably be starting here in your second year. But it seems like you really embraced the growth process. Just what's kind of that process been like for you of kind of embracing your role this season and continuing to develop? Yeah. In life, things doesn't go the way you exactly planted, too. And that just did happen. You know, things happened to Mecca last year that allowed him to come back and that allowed me to learn more.
And that's just how I see it. It makes me a better football player for the future. So yeah, I mean, yeah, let's see it. Three more on Zoom. Next one is going to come from Stefan Means. Go ahead. I'm Steven, but that's not. Yeah, you're good. But Brandon, there are a lot of clips of you this year where you're super, super excited after a block. And kind of showing your emotion there. What about blocking do you love so much as a receiver? Just being able to hit another guy with all my power, the hardest I can without any, any consequences. Except if you, except if you hold, of course. But yeah, just bringing that power. I mean, I heard some of the defensive guys telling me yesterday they were like, bro, hate to go against you. So knowing that from the defensive guys. So I know what the other defensive guys are thinking like, just keep bringing it to them.
They're not going to like it for four quarters. That's my mindset. Next question is going to come from Danny Davis. Danny, go ahead. Brandon, what are your impressions of these Texas defensive backs? And this kind of we've seen from them on film so far? Yeah, the last couple of days we watched them. They're a fast team. They don't give up many big plays down field. They're aggressive, but I actually know some of the DBs they have at corner there. I play with them. Well, I played with Malik Muhammad at SFE. So I might know him a little bit. And we have a watching them. They're a fast team. They're physical. But we just got to get the job. Not giving any Malik stories or any any. What do you say? Giving Malik stories or anything you remember about playing with them? Oh, um. Yeah, but I'm not going to say them here.
Yeah, what's this keep that? Our final question is going to come from Kurt Bulls. Kurt, go ahead. Hey, Brandon. One of the issues Texas has had the second half of the year is finishing. And what if you can speak to, uh, and they had a trouble, obviously, in the peach bowl, you know, blue of 16 point league? And you talk about finishing and having a killer instinct. And you guys obviously seem to have that now. Yeah, um, I think that started started in, uh, off season training at Fall Camp. We always say go plus two. That's if you're doing a 10 yard pro shuttle to, uh, you have to go plus two throughout the line. And that's just finishing. I was well and then fall camp. We had these long two and a half hour practices or whatnot. And then we came out and we had to do these, um, finishers. We called them ask for games late in the year like this. And we, um, I think Coach Day has a great, did a great job preparing all of us for these moments. And yeah, we just were ready to go.
We have time for just a couple more questions and clumpets so we can wrap up with our other two guys. Bill Landis, Kings of the North. Great. Um, Shrevy on the second touchdown run. It seemed like you took two players out of the play. First with your release and then with the guy you actually blocked. Is that, is that how it's designed? Or was it just lucky to get the guy decided to take off inside of the release? Um, it's actually designed for me to block the safety and lead, uh, the corner 101 with the running back. Um, but I was surprised to, like the corner I see came in so far in my release. I think he thought it was a pass. Um, but I think he was the edge of the defense. If you go watch that play, but I don't know, I, I don't really know why he came in so far, but it helped out for us. And I made my block and turned off score. Is there any lesson there for, for like, and even a young receiver watching that, that even if you know on the play, you're not getting the ball. You're, you're intended to block, but you, you release has to be, at all point, like as if you're going to go pitch pass. Yeah, definitely. Um, every little detail matters in them type of plays.
We were in a red zone there. So we say every yard matters is two yards. Um, so the block I made is just a testament to Kyle coach hardline prep, prep me throughout the week to make that block. So yeah. And final question. Joy Coffman, Columbus this patch. And it will, and then there's been some of the ball to eat well lately. Um, and some of the special way you guys have opened games. What do you think is just quick for you guys and for him and watching those buds? Um, a lot more confidence. I say throughout the year. Um, we were always there as offense. We had, we didn't know, we didn't quite know our identity. And now slowly, but surely I think we found that and we're going to keep on rolling. And um, he's made some great throws and yeah. I'm sorry, Brandon. I do have one more steep. How many percent of the score? You have, Brandon, there've been opportunities for you to play a huge role on offense. And you know, the number of plays you play in game can differ from one week to the next. But the opportunity is coming sooner rather than later for you to be in every down player.
Just one of the things you need to do in your game to take it to where it is now to be in every down guy. Um, I think there's a lot of things I could work on in my game. Um, I would say continuing to be football smart. I could just know what the defense is going to do before they do it. Um, my routes always can get better. My hands always can get better staying on the jugging machine. Um, work ethic, keep on top of it. Don't get, don't get satisfied with anything I do. And don't, don't get too big. Don't get too low. Don't get too high. Don't get too low. It's what they say. Yeah. You feel like a guy that the people follow, it seems like just in your mind, even though just second year guy, that you're kind of working toward being kind of a leadership type guy. Yeah. Um, I got to have guys that will take that role. Yeah. Um, it's a great feeling. Of course, the no guys are watching what you do and listening to what you do. Um, but I just feel like we do that with a lot of players here and not just myself, but. Um, the leadership we have on this team is like no other.
And that's why we got so far. I think Brandon, thank you very much. Trabia, what's it to you about the possibility of going into this season? For you, just get boxed. I mean, it means that they can have really. Yeah. I must have to learn right now. I love your. Is it seem like it's a big big glove? I mean, how would you describe it? I mean, I guess you just got to learn everything slowly. Of course, there's a lot to learn. Um, but I got a lot of hope. So you guys had a very unique experience like the early and early release. You got a chance to go to, you know, semi final. Some of you went to the Rose Bowl. There's nothing caught in the national championship game. What was like? What was that like? How much do you think that helped you? Uh, that was a credit. We just see how other leaders led in that position and just seeing what they did and how they prepared. That's not helping out with everybody. What was the highlight of that time, other than winning the national championship itself? Was there something that stands out to you? Uh, just being able to, uh, trouble and get the meet up. Everybody, meet all the players. Um, everybody at one in the 90 and meet all, uh,
early and early. That early. It's been a difficult part of making the transition from places we know. What has been the hard spot? I was really just living on my own. Got to be independent. Uh, that's pretty much it. Do you feel comfortable on that? Are you still working? You're trying to get on the South as well as college? I mean, of course there's adjustment, but I'm getting it just for you. How long do you think you're going to be? Uh, yes sir, money is 100%. Did you have to have a shirt here or anything else? Uh, no. Just hard to hold with this stuff here. I mean of course it was hard to miss my senior year. Last year kind of was in my best friend's place. What did you do to you? I think you did my hand right? Uh, it was an empty real, really. Yeah. Sorry, but sorry, but how did you get your, when you were in college? Uh, really? Because I was a baby in my back.
I got my master's phone. You really? I was like, I was. Like, once I was born forever. Why did you invite a baby like that? Uh, my dad looked up to me and I'm a junior so I was working with him. I think you said you're first name is the heart, right? Yeah. Okay, so you could wear eight too. You got two choices. It's a desire that can be addicted to people. I think I fell into that, no way younger age, but super bud, that's not who I am. Did you say it again? I watched the lab last time I started landing. On the plane I downloaded it to print shows. What did you think of it? Uh, I don't know that. His wife seems to have like holes right there.
I don't know how he handles it. It's a ticker show. I'm like, could the Uber seems to be coming on the film up? And all that's been all right. I'm excited to see how it goes. What did you like in your dreams? Oh, I thought you did a good job. I was surprised, honestly. I didn't know what he was doing. He was curious. So did you put your question? You say you hit your mom in salary. You just wind it all. Does mommy get a camera in her? Uh, I don't know what to talk about that. Just here, have a meeting or something. Pick up your name. Figure it out. Everybody's talking about it. I'm going to be a better shirt. He's not going to stop. I'm not going to stop. I'm not going to stop. I'm not going to stop. I'm just going to help you. And that other people, that's my fine, fine, fine, fine. Yeah, well, let me first off, I think I'd be doing this service to my teammates. You know, me even think about what's next.
This is the go-what's right in front of us. It's an overlapped. And that's another thing I've got to tell me so much. Who is just being present in every single moment that I'm in. You know, not looking too far ahead because I'm tripping. I was right in front of me. So, again, that's too so, we should have a thank you to the media if we think about what's next. Figure it out. Are you at least aware that you're doing a lot of speculation out there that people are going to throw a huge number to do to go and report all of this kind of decision? I mean, right now I'm just not worried about all that stuff. I mean, people can say all they want to say, but, you know, I'm just focused on the focus out front. I mean, I still get nervous for sure, but I just don't think. I think I do a good job of just understanding that, at that moment, whatever moment it is that I'm nervous about, it doesn't define who I am as a person, and it doesn't define who I am and God's eyes.
And understanding and knowing that has just kind of put like this force field of peace around me that I think it allows me to be able to be calm in certain situations, but it doesn't, that's not good. It's not good. What, what, what, what, what, what? I mean, I just love the game so much, and if you don't get nervous or a little bit of work, because I don't think you have that same love. I mean, I've got butterflies since, you know, going into football games and saying, oh, it's, you know, five, six years old. So, I don't know what that feels. I don't know. I just, you know, football just doesn't mean as much as it did to me back then. I want it to always be that much easier. I've been told, but I think so. I think so. I think I'm not sure how I stay. I think I'm not sure. I'm just going to have to stay.
I'm going to do a job right. It really has any mistakes. What, what would be a successful season? A national championship. I'm ring. When all the games we don't want to lose anything, we got a mindset that we can't be beat. And we just got to go show it. That mindset different. It seems like you guys expect a national championship every year. This year, even more so, you guys have all come back for this. You guys have all decided like enough as enough. Is that, is it, you can feel the difference or is there not really any difference? It's just the same. It's definitely a difference. Everyone working harder. We noticed our last run. Most of us don't have any years after this. So we got to go, go bigger, go home, then. We're not trying to go home. Finish big. We know what you guys think of Michigan. But when you look at what they did, they won the national championship. And you guys took them down to the final minute, right? You know what I mean? I mean, you were right there. Something goes a little different. You guys could have won that game against them. Does that tell you anything about like that, hey, you guys won a winner national championship.
But you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the national championship last year. Like you're that close. So I'm saying, we just like work harder. That's kind of coach makes a saying, you know, nobody cares. It's just work harder. Like those, you know, when we played Georgia, it's the same thing. Yeah. Last, last play, you know, they went on the win in 90. So we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season. I think we'll be fine. How frustrating is that? You're that close against the last two national titles. Of course, as you know, it's frustrating. But you can't change the outcome. You can't really dwell on it. You just got to, you know, come back and work harder. Do things better than you did last year. And hopefully the outcome will change. Is that as you get older, you kind of learn. I thought that was working hard, but then you always find out there's a little more you could have been doing? Yeah, definitely. I mean, that's how that's what growing up is basically in college. And I thought, freshman year I was working as hard as I could, but now look back at it. I really wasn't working hard at all compared to what I'm doing now. So just to learn anything. If the stamina is a 60, then what do you need it to be to be your best?
Uh, 80, 85. I mean, I can, it's all on me. I just, I think it's a little higher. I was just trying to be funny, but I mean, it's all on me. I just got to run harder in shape. But the stamina, you know, it's been a pleasure. The idea of potentially 60, 70, 70, 70, 70, 70, 70. So everybody has that idea. Does it make you nervous about can you last that long? Do you have worries? I think I think we, I definitely get lies. I was just, you know, we got to get the young guys that come along with us. We can't play 50 snaps again. That's just too much on our bodies. Just everybody. Like, online, we got to get those younger guys to play, you know, get that pieces on the D line and online and everywhere else. So we can last that long. Speaking of life, I'm not a snap. Did you like playing that new snap again last year? I don't know if any of us were really expected to play that next. Uh, yeah, I did. Unless we were like winning by like a line.
Uh, I thought like there are no moments you know, I can go sit down or something. But we're playing them big games, like, you know, Notre Dame, too, or North, those kind of games. Yeah, of course I want to be in, because I know I can contribute. And I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I can get the job done. What stands out about Kaden McDonald is he got the team. You guys in a second? Oh yeah, definitely. K-Mac is a K-Mac's animal. Y'all, you haven't really seen it yet, but in practice, he shows all the time. He's just, he's growing right now. He has the work ethic. He just has to get, you know, in the playbook and things like that. You guys are about the exact same size. Listen, you're both listening to 6th or 3.27. He's 3.26. Yeah, he's a real guy. I kind of look at him like my junior, but, you know, K-Mac, he's going to be a great player. He's just got to develop more and get into playbook. So really a lot on you, older guys. There's that large group of young guys, and then there's the senior in the back. Is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys along as well? Yeah, definitely. We got to be leaders. Like I said, we got to have them play this year. We can't just play all the snaps. They got to get in there and get some work.
And we got to get them right, learn all season. So they can play. And I just played, I don't want to like contribute, like, make plays, tackle his sex. It seems like these guys get bigger. Each one of the freshmen class is a clear group leader. Do those guys kind of, does it kind of allow you in the first? Yeah, they definitely some big dudes. And they all work hard. I haven't really seen much of some of the day too when I'm passing on. But throughout the workouts, they've been working hard, you know, they're determined. I can say that. And it looks like they're ready to work with me. How important is those? It feels like there's a lot of great defenses that you have big athletic defensive tactics you can eat up space, but also move, you know, right? That is that. Is that an inquire maybe for great defense to have guys like you that have some balls, but also a great team? I think that is definitely. I think if you look at the last couple of national championship winners, like,
see my North, they didn't know they got two good, uh, detaco, two athletic detacles. Look at Georgia, two athletic detacles. I think that's definitely neat if you want to go on that big run and beat those big teams. If you think about this, they won't define by the defense attack. It's like, what's Georgia, Jordan Davis and JL Carter? What's Michigan? It's Chris Jenkins. Couple more questions. How do you think you understand this? I mean, you understand this because you play it, but I feel like some time, I don't know, are people realizing how important defense tackles are? A little bit more than they used to? I think so. I think they're starting to develop more and more of these like freakiest detacles. Yeah. Like in the combine, just now, you see in like those guys, they're moving four to four, seven, eight, and things like that. So we'll see. And when you think about this freakish attack, how do you think you fit into that old of that kind of player? You watch that and say, yeah, that's me. Yeah, definitely. I think I'm top notch when it comes to detacles, but I don't want to, you know, get a big head, but you know, watch it come on.
I watch the dude that drove. I have a tape here. You're like, you're looking like my film. So I think I'm up there with all the time. Tyler, can you become like an artist and it comes into bad young passes? Yeah. I think your legs have your things. I mean, when you're going to break practice, you're not doing it much or left or right. How do you work on that? Do you have like an award? I don't remember how much I've lost you. You have a gold line. How many do you want to have? I mean, as many as I can have, I think I have more than that, but I think they've counted. I think they've counted some of them and some of them were like just missed it. So, but I think we work on Joe's matching the hand. I think that's goes big and what we do is a D line, you know, just affecting the quarter. That is anyway you can. It's just great for the defense. That little thing covering his eye, you know, he might throw it a little bit to the left or our player. So, so it's something that you really, really have to work on. You can do that with what you do. It's steering that's one of the things that you've maybe worked on the most.
You can turn your time here because there are a few guys that I've seen. Like, oh, that pass through the back of the down. We don't have that. It's a style that you don't have to kind of kind of expect it for the next one. I think I just have like a, like, an eye for the ball kind of. I kind of just look at the quarterback and just, I see him like load up. Getting his ways and sometimes he throws it to me. I don't know. I hear it's a deal out to the Ohio State quarterbacks get. I mean, they get frustrated by, you know, we're a team, you know, we're just getting better. Yeah, a lot of, a lot of different backs, man. They just learn to grow for them. You got to pick your top three backs. You got to go right now. One, two, three. I don't really have a top three, but I'll give you, I'll give you one. I would say, say, Juan Gibbs and I like McCaffrey. Auto, he was injured this year. I like McCaffrey. Best back in this drive. I lead that up. That's y'all decision.
Playing with Will Howard. What I'm going to remember most. We're a Howard man. He's just such a great lead, such a great leader, man. It's just like in moments where, you know, usually a lot of players they fold, man. He was just always calm and relaxed, man. And he just the leader that he was, man. That's one thing I'm going to remember about him. Yeah, he's, he's going to be really good, man. He's on Coach Lock. I think he got the transfer in as well from West Virginia. Just that one, two punch with them both as well. They're going to be really good backs. And so James people's man, he's smart. The way that he goes about his business, man, he's mature. And so man, he's growing, you know, just as a person in as a player. And so man, yeah, definitely Ohio State, you know, that running back room is in great hands. Yeah, Coach, Coach Hartlom, man. He's full of energy, man. And he's creative as well, you know. I'm just learning from him as well. You know, I'm trying to run more outside the backfield. It was being a great time.
I'm going to be able to do it. I'm going to be able to do it. I'm going to be able to do it. I'm going to be able to do it. I'm going to be able to do it. I'm going to be able to do it. I'm going to be able to do it. I'm going to run more outside the backfield. It was being able to learn from Coach Hartlom. And so he's definitely creative at what he does. And he brings a lot of energy to the team as well. And so I think that would do really good. What's your intensity, man? And intensity of the playoffs. Every game, man. It's like the intensity got, you know, higher and higher. And so, you know, being able, I know in the lead, it's the same thing. Even if it's not the playoffs, just every game and intensity it keeps getting higher and higher. And so, yeah, you just, I know you got to bring it, you know, each and every day and come in and work just like Ohio State. You know, I definitely feel like Ohio State. They definitely do a good job of preparing us for that. You know, I just remember even before going through this process, I'll talk to a lot of players before that. And they told me a lot of just about how much Ohio State prepared them, you know, for the NFL. And so, yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I know I took a couple of days off after the National Championship. And then shoot right after that. I'm writing sample Florida and I'm right to it. And so, yeah, I think while I trained, I trained at your performance. I think it's called the House of Athlete or the Compound now. They did a good job, man. They're just bringing us in. And the way they went about training us, man, they did a really good job. The Bucking Nears. No, I haven't. Temple of Tampa. Temple of Tampa. Nice. It's a nice city, man. Really nice. The 40 to broad and avert. Yeah. Yeah. No, man. It's really all about technique.
And then it's about mindset as well. And so, I say, you know, it's for the love of my brother. It's for the love of Will Howard. It's for the love of the receivers who I got on the perimeter. Just making sure, you know, first of all, my quarterback doesn't get sacked. And I told Will, I think it was before the first game. I was like, I got your brother. It's like, I said, man, I'm not going to let you get hit, you know. And so, I don't know if I gave up a sack. I'm not sure that. But I know if I did, I haven't given up too many. And so, man, it's for the love of my brother's, though, man, making sure the ball get in their hands, you know, the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed. You had to hit the practice field later today. What is something you've been working on right now when you need to? In my game. You can't really work on this, you know, in all season, I feel like. It's more so, you know, you got to put the pads on. You got to go through some inside run, you know, maybe. It's really just continuing to run through tackles. And so, that's, I feel like that's one of the areas in my game. You know, I want to continue to get better, right? I feel like I did a good job of that in my senior year. And so, I just want to continue to build on that.
So, you get to play? Yes, I did. Yes, I did. So, people, you look like now that you are out there. You get back in person. You have been playing with him for a while. I did meet with New Orleans as well. I never got that comparison. Actually, I know I have a Camera shoe. Yeah, man, I have a Camera. Camera, great, great back, man. Just what he does and those 101 matchups, he's dangerous, man. And he's so smooth. He's so smooth as well. I'm not going to lie. He's smooth. Yeah. Inside zone from stack, being able to hit that thing downhill. And I'll say the next one is probably just an option out of the backfield. And man coverage, you're getting on that linebacker. And so. What he needs will be here in a couple of years, Jeremiah. You'll have the current, of course, a little bit about just how much pressure he is. And he's always in that pressure. So much attention.
Like I said, he's a big thing. The biggest thing is the way that he carries himself, man. And the way that, man, he approaches the game. He comes in with the mindset, he's going to work every single week. Every practice, he's working hard. Even shoot. I don't know. I think he had a, every game was a good game for him, man. But still, man, he always has the mentality to mindset that, you know, he's going to come in each and every day. He's going to continue to work and get better, man. And so he's definitely, man, he's going to be a special player, man. He really is. I think it's not a lot of fun to play with him. Man, a lot of ups and downs, man. It's just how you respond to adversity. And I feel like that's something that God has definitely helped me to do better. It's just, I'm not having something to lean on now. You know, I remember before I met him, you know, going through those adversity. I had nothing to run to. You know, you can run to people, but they still can't. It's not too much. They can't truly help you. You know, I feel like, you know, I feel like the only person that can truly help you is your relationship with Jesus Christ.
And so being able to lean on him, you know, he gives you, in those moments where it's tough, you know, where it's slow. And when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about, he gives you that peace and comfort. You know, even in those moments, man, where it's so hard that you can't explain. It's like, man, I'm going through this, but like, how am I still filled with this internal joy? You know, how do I have so much peace in this situation? And so that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you. And so... The fact that for a person's power and judgment is through our effectiveness, which aspect could be to those other individuals who want to follow or gain from being around power and... Um... Man, those guys have such a great mentality, man. I just really love their mentality, especially Q as well. You know, I talked about Will Howard, his leadership, but Quincham mentality, man, um... That boy just, yeah, that boy just gifted, you know. You see, you know, sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like, you know, he should have a negative five yards.
And then as soon as you know it, you know, he, that running through somebody, stiff arm and somebody, and she would just gain a 10. And so... Do some of the things that he does, he just realizes two different guys. Yeah. Um... Shoot, I think... Yeah, man, I think it's just like... He's just gifted, man, too, beyond it. He's just gifted, you know, he's a big back, you know, he's strong, and so, um... You know, he's able to do those things, and so... Yeah, man, it's definitely... You know, I look at his game, and I want to, you know, at the same time, I want to learn from Quincham. You know, I want to look at his game, and it's like, man, where can I get better at as well? You know, that's the type of player I am. I'm always looking to get better, man, I'm always looking to grow as a player. What are your last words of speech? Jule and San. Oh yeah, he's gonna be a great, but... He's gonna be a great quarterback, man. He's so, so accurate, and so, um... He's definitely, man, I know Coach Dez is definitely going to get him right, just, you know, um... Continuing to grow as a leader, continuing to grow as a player. And so he's gonna be really good for high state. Uh... He's... I know just the quarterback position.
Um, I feel like, you know, the quarterbacks in the past, they've definitely been vocal. And so I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to, um, ask them to really say in this well. It's to be that vocal leader, and lead the, um, and lead the offense and lead the team. Shoot, man, he has a build like JK Dobbins, and um... I kind of see them, you know, similar, similarities in their game as well. And I know JK Dobbins, he was a great running back. Um, I feel like he's not talked about his none. Um, a lot, but man, his career here, you watch his highlights, is great. I remember, um, before I recruit, before I committed here, I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights, like every, every, um, one of his years here, like four or five times. And so, man, he was such a great back. And um, I feel like, you know, um, when I see JK Dobbins, when I see, um, James people, I see similarities to both of their games, I feel like they play the same. And so... Appreciate you all, y'all. You're all right. This...
This... This...
This... This... This... This... Well, I got coming in last year, I knew it was all so I just attacked every day, really the same way. It's taking a very rough... Physically, how different are you, weight wise, body wise on that, from the year ago? Um, I think I got a lot bigger. I'm like 240, you know, like 240-4 right now. Last year, I played at like 236, 237. What does it feel like at 244? Or, you feel like a, almost a different machine out there. Yeah, like a... What does it feel like to be running around out there like you are, but with more, more
back? I just feel like I'm like, like, like, more downhill, like stronger, like I'm taking all blocks better, it's a big move. Is it daunting? Uh, maybe that's not the correct term, but to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year, and you played quite a bit last year instead of... What do you have to get straight in your head about being on the field that much more? I just got to get ready to just play 30 more snaps. But, are you... How would you describe how much you're looking forward to it from an 8-stand point? Yeah, I'm looking forward to it. I'm ready for it. My, I'm ready for it. The text is open, it's a rematch, so to speak, but it's not really two different teams compared to the ones that I'm going to play. How has that enhanced this camp for you and this team getting ready for the... We're an opener of that magnitude. Yeah, we're an opener like that. We've been emphasizing it a lot, and we know we got coming, so we know we got to do it. We've been prepared for it. Already, this is probably what you're going to be doing. I think Riley ready to play right now.
He advanced freshmen, like he ended up here in the book. He stood in like he advanced, and his measurements was crazy. Like he saw it like the saw it went to him. Orbel, you said you're ready. You know what I'm telling you, right? What was that process like during last season? Could you feel yourself becoming more and more ready? Whatever the team needed for me? Yeah, because that's pretty much what my role was, just whenever I was needed, I had to step up. So I feel like that's what built me into me being able to say I'm ready for this year. When you say ready, is it more a physical thing? Is it a mental thing? When I say ready, I think it's pretty much like everything physically, mentally, mostly. I think I'm there. A different is that feeling this year of the analyze? That's the most professional thing ever. Asked one more time? How different is that response feel? That's 50, that is physical emotion. All that. It was last year. You knew you were a whole way. I feel like it's a way bigger responsibility with me having to step up this year.
But I kind of go about it the same way. Like last year, I was attention to what everything I did. I feel like this year is going to be the same thing. It's probably a little bit more. I'm ready for this year. I'll do the same. It won't work? I was going to work your watch. I say, describe my game. When you think of me, you would think of like a bullet, like a silver bullet. I don't really have bullet. I'm always on the ball. That's how I like to play and think. I don't think I have to be my nickname. I'm not saying that the big thing could be that. Oh yeah, yeah. Yeah, that's like a more important question. How does that fit you? What are you enjoying about bullying? I think it fit me because I just like the defense. I feel like we got a lot of freedom.
We're moving around a lot of the terms. I don't know. I don't really know how to answer that. That's okay. You can go on your instincts a little bit more. Maybe it's not so thinking of too much. I don't even know if I say that because there's a lot of thinking going on. I just like it's deep. I like how it's pretty deep. I like what you got going on. What was it? Sad when CJ left the ring. Now I wanted to say that. I was kind of like happy for you. That's what you want. No. That's my dog. I'm kind of missing a little bit. I'm happy for him. Well, don't thank you. Go ahead one last question. Coach Daze talked a lot about the guys who played some last year. But maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for that wasn't maybe your national championship. You guys will win your own. How much do you feel that is a guy who certainly contributed last year. But we'll be in this bigger role and a lot of some of your classmates. Yeah, I do feel like.
Yeah, I do feel like I did win a national championship. But like you said, my role wasn't the same as how it's going to be this year. So yeah, I definitely want to go get another one experienced that feeling. Maybe on the field. A lot more place. Great. Oh, Bell, thank you very much. I've been using you. You know, and that almost saved you. How much is it grown that you can put your finger on? Yeah, I was growing immensely. I mean, Caleb, he makes a lot of checks. Latham makes a lot of checks. I listen to them. Whatever they need. If I need to cover somebody, I'll go cover anybody. If they need me to do run support, I'll do run support. And it's really what Caleb does. What we do and Latham. It just goes back to the coach G's preparation. And everyone's preparation to give us more flexibility. And it doesn't matter who's in those positions. And we can all play every position. Whether it's covering somebody or running and tackling. Did you feel like that was the case before the Oregon game? You're saying what I'm saying? He's something that's been added. It just, you know, rely on a little bit more. Go ahead.
Yeah, it did. I've probably been a broska game. Me getting more safety reps. And we had a five week to prepare. So I really learned to play. But a lot more, even though I knew the playbook, I learned a lot more. I'm out like in debt. You know, so really just after the Oregon game, it helped me a lot to go back to safety. Go to Niko everywhere. You guys had a lot of issues of giving up big plays in the passing game of the first game against Oregon. What do you feel you guys need to do better this time around? Just to make sure that doesn't happen. Just the same mindset. We got to challenge these receivers. You know, every dog has their day. Maybe some people didn't have their day that game. But we'll look out there and hopefully change the narrative. And we still play with the same confidence, same technique. And, yeah. Bill Rebellion, what's the most this batch? And Denzel obviously had a tough game. And that one. What have you seen from him and how he's responded?
Do you get a sense of from him? How he's for this rematch? Oh, yeah, he's super stoked for this rematch. His preparation has been very good. He's always been preparing, even though it didn't go the way he wanted to go. That game. But he just always had his confidence. And we're going to see a big game out of him this week. And, you know, I know you guys wanted to play them in anapolis. But the fact that you get to play them at the Rose Bowl, I mean, get a second chance. And people have said, you don't get that very often. How determined are you guys to take advantage of it? We're super, super determined. We watched film. I mean, we've watched a lot of film. The first time we played them, now we've got another six games that they played. Up film to watch. And it's just, they've grown a lot as a team. Same as us. We've grown a lot. We're not the same team. We were when we played them week one or weeks, weeks, weeks or whatever. But now we're out there and going to play fast, physical, and everything like that. All right, Jordan, we're going to jump to the zoom question here from Joey Kaufman. Columbus Dispatch.
My bad. Not too joy. Can't we T. Robinson, the athletic? Hey, Jordan, you've moved around a lot in the second day in your career. And now kind of getting some many more safety reps. What is it like at this point when Walt or Coach Mills comes to you and asks you to do some else? And just how much can you lean on the experiences you've had moving around when you're trying to learn something new in the middle of the season? It means a lot. We always talk about what this is being on the surface. Whether that's making plays or not making plays or doing your job so another person can make plays. That's kind of what we pride ourselves on. And it's just fun. We're going around different positions. I'm always up for a new challenge. And a lot of people in the country can't do that. I just hold myself to that standard where I can play any position and excel at it. Okay. And anybody else needs a question? Let me know. But otherwise we're going to go to Austin more of the podcast. Jordan, when you were talking about watching film Oregon, which one do you think is more valuable to you watching that against yourself?
Seven games ago, even if you've changed or the ensuing six games for Oregon, which one do you put more stock in? Kind of both. For me, I kind of watch what I did, things I did well, things I didn't do too well against them. And their team is changing, their scheme has changed. Some players have been out those stretch of games. So I really watched the past game we played. And I know they're going to go back to some of the stuff that they liked, of course. And different games like Penn State, maybe Illinois, they run a lot of men. So just watching, watching stuff like that, every game matters. So yeah. Jordan, thank you very much. Thank you. I really plan as much. So I just wanted to get like more experience under my belt. So I can bring younger guys with me because I've been through a lot of these. One of those younger guys, we're seeing it out here. It's the first time I've scored all of those last years. What have you seen from well? I don't know. I've kind of felt like, last year we all forgot about it because he was hurt. Now he's running, you know, almost a second man, hopefully. And you and Ty, what have you seen from that?
What was the workhorse? He goes, state quiet, he's going to work hard. And that's what I love about him. He focuses, he don't really talk much. He's going to get the job done, do a job right. He rarely has any mistakes. So what would be a successful season? The National Championship. My ring, win, all the games we don't want to lose in the past. We got a mindset that we can't be beat. And we just got to go show it. It's like, does that mindset different? It seems like you guys expect the National Championship every year. This year even more so, you guys have all come back for this. You guys have all decided that that was enough. Does that just keep feeling different? Or is there not really any difference? It's just the same work. It's definitely a difference. Everyone working harder. We noticed our last run. Most of us don't have any years after this. So we got to go bigger, go home and we're not trying to go home. Finish big. We know what you guys think of Michigan. But when you look at what they did, they won the National Championship. And you guys took them down to the final minute. You know what I mean?
You were right there. Something goes a little different. You guys could have won that game against them. Does that tell you anything about like that, hey, you guys want to win a National Championship? But you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the National Championship last year. Like you're that close. So I'm saying we just like work harder. That's kind of a coach makes a saying, you know, nobody cares. Work harder. Like those, you know, one plate Georgia is the same thing. Last, last play, you know, they went on the win in 90. So we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season. I think we'll be fine. How frustrating is that? You're that close against the last two national title. Of course, as you know, it's frustrating. But you can't change the outcome. You can't really do what you're doing. You just got to, you know, come back and work harder. Do things better than you did last year. And hopefully the outcome will change. Is that as you get older, you can learn. I thought that was working harder than you always find out there's a little more you could have been doing. Yeah, definitely. I mean, that's how that's what growing up is basically in college. I thought, fresh me, I was working as hard as I could.
But now I look back at it. I really wasn't working hard at all compared to what I'm doing now. So just to learn anything. If the stamina is a 16, then the answer is like, what do you need it to be to be your best? Uh, 80, 85. I mean, I can, it's all on me. I just, I think it's a little higher. I was just trying to be funny, but I mean, it's all on me. I just got to run harder. Get the shape. It's been a pleasure. The idea of potentially the 16, 17, 17, 17. I have about that idea. There's a making, you know, what it's about? Can you last that long? You're really worried, you're worried. I think, I think I definitely can last. I was just, you know, we got to get the young guys to come along, but as we can't play 50 snaps a game, that's just too much on our bodies, uh, just everybody. Like, online, D line, we got to get those younger guys to play. You know, get that pieces on the D line and online and everywhere else.
So we can last that long. Speaking of that, if you like playing that new snap to me last year, because I don't know if any of us were really expected to play that next. Uh, yeah, I did. Unless we were like winning by like a lot. Uh, I thought like, there are no moments you know I can go sit down or something. But we're playing them big games like, you know, Notre Dame, too, or North, those kind of games. Of course, I want to be, because I know I can contribute. And I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I get the job done. What stands out about Kaden McDonald is he got a team of you guys in the second year. Oh, yeah, definitely. K-Mac is a K-Mac animal. Y'all, you haven't really seen it yet, but in practice, he shows all the time. He's just, he's growing right now. He has to work at the, he just has to get, you know, in the playbook and things like that. You guys are about the exact same size. Listen, you're both listening to 6-3, you're 3-27, he's 3-26. Yeah, he's a very old guy. I kind of look at him like my junior, but you know, K-Mac, he's going to be a great player. He's just got to develop more and get into playbook. So really a lot on you older guys, there's that large group of young guys
and then they've seen you in your back. Is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys along as well? Yeah, definitely. We got to be leaders. Like I said, we got to have them play this year. We can't just play all the snaps. They got to get in there and get some work. And we got to get them right during the all season. So they can play. And I just played, they want to contribute, like, make plays, tackle with sex. It seems like these guys get bigger. Each one of the freshmen class is bigger or bigger. Do those guys kind of, does it kind of allow you in the cell of your person? Yeah, they definitely use some big dudes. And they all work hard. I haven't really seen much. It's only a day too when I'm passing on. But throughout the workouts, they've been working hard. You know, they're determined. I can say that. It looks like they're ready to work with me. How important is those? It feels like there's a lot of great defense that you have big athletic defensive tactics. You can eat up space, but also move, you know, right? That is that. Is that an inquire maybe for a great defense to have guys like you that have some balls, but also a great team?
I think that is definitely. I think if you look at the last couple of national championship winners, like team of North, they got two good, two athletic detacles. Look at Georgia, two athletic detacles. I think that's definitely neat if you want to go on a big run and beat those big teams. If you think about that, they're going to find by the defense tactics. What's Georgia, Jordan Davis and James Carter? What's Michigan? It's Chris Jenkins. Tell me more questions for you guys. I mean, you understand this is your play. But I feel like some time I don't know, are people realizing how important defense tackles are? A little bit more than they used to? I think so. I think they're starting to develop more and more of these like freakiest detacles. Yeah. Like in the combine, just now you see in like those guys, they're moving four to four, seven, eights and things like that. So we'll see. And when you think about those freakish athletic defensive tackles, how do you think you fit into that ball of that kind of play? Will you watch that and say, yeah, that's me? Yeah, definitely.
I think I'm top notch when it comes to detacles, but I don't want to, you know, get a big head, but you know, I watch it come on. I watch it do the drills. I have a team here, you're like, you're looking like my film. So I think I'm up there with all those. Tell me, can you become like a artist who comes to batting down passes the way he's going to things? When you're going to spring practice, you're not doing a bunch of 11 or 11. How do you work on that? Do you like it? I don't remember how much I've lost. You have a goal in mind. How many do you want to have? I mean as many as I can have, I think I have more than that, but I think they've counted. I think they've counted some of them and some of them were like just missed it. So, but I think we work on drills matching the hand. I think that's goes big and what we do is a D line, you know, just affecting the quarter of that is. Any way you can is just great for the defense. That little thing you cover in his eye, you know, he might throw it. A little bit to the left to our players. So, so it's something that you really, really have to work on.
It's very, that's one of the things that you've maybe worked on the most. You could bring your time here because there are a few guys that I've seen. Like, oh, that passed me a bad end. We don't have to ask for this title. We're kind of kind of expected for the second. I think I just have like a, like, an eye for the ball kind of. I kind of just look at the quarterback and just, I see him like load up. Getting his ways and sometimes he's throws it to me. I'm irritated if you want to be a high state quarterback. I'm getting a bad, dumb passes. I mean, they get frustrated by, you know, we're a team, you know, we're just getting better. Yeah. Watch a lot of, a lot of different backs, man. They just learn to grow for them. You got to pick your top three backs and get them all right now. One, two, three. Uh, I don't really have a top three, but I'll give you, I'll give you one. I would say, say, Juan Gibbs and I like McCaffrey auto. He was injured this year. I like McCaffrey. I appreciate it.
Who's the best back in this drive? Best back in this drive. I lead out of the yard. That's y'all. That's y'all decision. Playing well with Howard. When I'm going to remember most. We're a Howard man. He's just such a great lead, such a great leader, man. He's just like in moments where, you know, usually a lot of players they fold, man. Yeah. Coach, Coach Hartlum, man, he's full of energy, man.
And he's creative as well. You know, I'm just learning from him as well. You know, I'm trying to run more outside the backfield. It was being able to learn from Coach Hartlum. And so he's definitely creative at what he does. And he brings a lot of energy to the team as well. And so I think that would do really good. Straight away, and it's all the way to the playoffs. I can wait until that's what my strength is. Just the intensity, man. Just the intensity, man. And the intensity of the playoffs, every game, man, is like the intensity got, you know, higher and higher. And so, you know, being able, I know in the lead, it's the same thing. Even if it's not the playoffs, just every game and the intensity, it keeps getting higher and higher. So, yeah, you just, I know you got to bring it, you know, each and every day and come in and work. And just like Ohio State, you know, I definitely feel like Ohio State.
And then shoot right after that, I'm writing sample Florida and I'm right to it. And so, yeah, I think while I trained, I trained at YoMurf Performance. I think it's called the House of Athlete or the Compound now. They did a good job, man. They're just bringing us in and the way they went about training us, man. They did a really good job. And you know what, you know what, you knew? The Bucking Nears. No, I haven't. We think it's City Tampa. Tampa, Tampa, nice. It's a nice city, man. Really nice. The 40 to broad and the vert. I've been on races in Austin, Walker. Do you speak to your mentality of like when you've got a linebacker, so when you're in the gap, you're bigger than you and you're getting ready to swear a lot of it. Yeah. Yeah. Nah, man.
It's, I said, man, I'm not going to let you get hit, you know. What is something you can work on right now when you need to sign up? You can't really work on this, you know, in all of season, I feel like it's more so, you know, you got to put the pads on. You got to go through some inside run, you know, maybe, it's really just continuing and run through tackles. And so, that's, I feel like that's one of the areas in my game, you know, I want to continue to get better. I feel like I did a good job of that in my senior year. And so, I just want to continue to build on that. Yes, I did.
Yes, I did. Yes, I did. So people say you look like an artist or an actor. You get back to nursing. I think that would be more like a... I did meet with New Orleans as well. I never got that comparison. I know I have a Camarit. Sure, yeah, man. I have a Camarit great back, man. And so... Yeah, I say the man, the biggest thing is the way that he carries himself, man.
And the way that man approaches the game. He comes in with the mindset, you know, he's going to work every single week. You know, every practice, you know, he's working hard. You know, even shoot him. I don't know. I think he had a... Every game was a good game for him, man. But still, man, he always has the mentality to mindset that, you know, he's going to come in each and every day. He's going to continue to work and get better, man. And so he's definitely, man. He's going to be a special player, man. He really is. I think it's a match that's in here. When he looked back on it, what do you want to stand down for? Man, a lot of ups and downs, man. It's just how you respond to adversity. And I feel like that's something that God has definitely helped me to do better. It's just, I'm not having something to lean on now. You know, I remember before I met him, you know, going through those adversity, I had nothing to run to. You know, you can run to people, but they still can't... It's not too much. They can't truly help you. You know, I feel like, you know, I feel like the only person that can truly help you is your relationship with Jesus Christ. And so being able to lean on him, you know, he gives you, you know, his moments,
where it's tough, you know, where it's slow. And when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about, he gives you that peace and comfort, you know, even in those moments, man, where it's so hard that you can't explain. It's like, man, I'm going through this, but like, how am I still filled with this internal joy? You know, how do I have so much peace in this situation? And so that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you. And so... The fact that for a person's power and judgment is to experience that kind of... Which aspect can be to those other individuals that shoot right into the model and from being around power to heaven? Um... Man, those guys have such a great mentality, man. Am I just really loved their mentality? Especially Q as well, you know, I talked about Will Howard, his leadership, but Quincham mentality, man. That boy just, yeah, that boy just gifted, you know. You see, you know, sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like, you know, he should have a negative five yards.
And then as soon as you know it, you know, he, the running through somebody, still farming somebody, and shoot, it's a game to 10. And so... You some of the things he does, he just realizes two different guys. Yeah. Um... Shoot, I think... Yeah, man, I think it's just like... He's just gifted, man, to be honest. He's just gifted, you know, he's a big back. You know, he's strong, and so, um... You know, he's able to do those things, and so... Yeah, man, it's definitely... You know, I look at his game, and I want to... You know, at the same time, I want to learn from Quincham. You know, I want to look at his game, and it's like, man, where can I get better at as well? You know, that's the type of player I am. I'm always looking to get better, man. I'm always looking to grow as a player. What's your last sentence for being a player? Druel and San. Oh, yeah, he's going to be a great... He's going to be a great quarterback, man. He's so accurate, and so... He's definitely, man, I know Coach Dears is definitely going to get him right. You know, um, container grow as a leader, container grow as a player. And so, he's going to be really good for a high state. Thanks, Coach Dears. I was going to start having a short break. Uh... I know just the quarterback position.
Um, I feel like, you know, the quarterbacks in the past, they've definitely been vocal. And so, I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to ask them, Julian San, as well, is to be that vocal leader, and lead the offense, and lead the team. Thanks, Coach Dears. Shoot, man. He has a build like JK Dobbins, and um... I kind of see them, you know, similarities in their game as well. And I know JK Dobbins, he was a great running back. I feel like he's not talked about his none. Um, a lot, but man, his career here, you watch his highlights, is great. I remember, um, before I recruit, before I committee here, I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights, like every, every, um, one of his years here, like four or five times. And so, man, he was such a great back. And um, I feel like, you know, when I see JK Dobbins, when I see, um, James people, I see similarities to both of their games. I feel like they play the same. And so, appreciate you all, you have a good one. You get that.
You get that. You get that.
You get that. Well, I got coming in last year, I knew the role, so I just tacked Eric Dave, really the same way. He's taking the Banzary rep. Physically, how different are you, weight-wise, body-wise, all that from the year? Um, I think I got a lot bigger. I'm like 240, I'm like 244 right now. Last year, I played it like 236, 237. What does it feel like at 244, or belly? You feel like almost a different machine out there. Yeah, like a, what does it feel like to be running around out there like you are, but with more, uh, more back? I just feel like I'm like, like, like more downhill, like stronger, like I'm taking all the bloods better. It's a bigger, yeah. Is it daunting? Uh, maybe that's not the correct term, but to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year, and you played quite a bit last year instead of what you have to get straight in your head about being on the field that much more.
Is it got to get ready to just play 30 more snaps? So, but are you, are you, how would you describe how much you're looking forward to it from an eight-stand point? Yeah, I'm looking forward to it. I'm ready for it. The text is open. It's a rematch. But it's not really two different teams compared to the ones that I'm going to play in stuff. How has that enhanced this camp for you and this team getting ready for the, where an opener of that magnitude? Yeah, with an opener like that, we've been, um, we've been emphasizing it a lot. We know we got coming, so we know we got to do, we've been preparing for it. I already just probably worked with him. I think Riley ready to play right now. He advanced freshman like he ended up here in the book. He studied in like he advanced and his measurements was crazy. Like he saw it on the saw line too. You said you were ready. You know you're ready. What was that process like during last season? Could you feel yourself becoming more and more ready for whatever the team needed for you? Yeah, because that's pretty much what my role was.
Just whenever I was needed, I had to step up. So I feel like that's what built me into me being able to say I'm ready for this year. When you say ready, is it more a physical thing? Is it a mental thing? When I say ready, I think it's pretty much like everything physically, mentally, mostly. I think I'm there. A different is that feeling this year than last year. That's the most possible. Um, that's the one more time. How different is that responsibility? That should be that is the most possible. If you were last year, you knew you were a role player. Um, I feel like it's a, uh, it's a way bigger responsibility with me having to step up this year. But I kind of go about it the same way. Like last year, I was attention over everything I did. I feel like this year is going to be the same thing. It's probably a little bit more. Somebody you. And what word? How's anybody working? I'm not sure.
I say. Scrab my game. I say that when you think of me, you would think of like a, like a bully, like a silver bullet. I don't really. But I'm always on the ball. That's how I like to play a thing. No, I ain't got to be my nickname, but. I'm saying that. Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah, it's like. I'm just like, I feel like we got like you said, we got a lot of freedom. And we're moving around a lot. A lot of the terms is like, you know, I don't know. I don't really not answer that. That's okay. You could go on your instincts a little bit more. Maybe it's not so. Thinking of too much. I don't even know if I say that because there's a lot of thinking going on, but it's like. I just like his things. I like how pretty the things I like what you got going on. What was it sad when CJ left the way?
Uh, no, I wanted to much sad. I was kind of like happy for him. Yeah, that's what you want. No, no. No, that's my dog. I'm going to say yeah, kind of missing a little bit, but I'm happy for him. I don't think you go ahead one last question. Coach Daze talked a lot about the guys who played some last year, but maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for that wasn't maybe your national championship. You guys know when you're out. Yeah. How much do you feel that is a guy who certainly contributed last year, but will be in this bigger role and along with some of your classmates? Yeah, I do feel like, um, yeah, I do feel like I did win a nattie last year, but like you said, my role wasn't same as how's going to be this year. So yeah, I definitely want to want to go get another one experienced that like feeling with me be on the field. A lot more place. Great. Well, Bill, thank you very much. I'm so happy to see you. Sometimes I feel like basketball. I want to be on that just like the fed, but you know, you're going to stay in the stage where you're supposed to.
Exactly. Yeah. That's a great question. I don't know what to say about that. What do you guys think? I go into every day. This man is strong. I'm talking about like the basketball. You know, you can just do a thing. I know he was really fast. Just the whole way I'm sure he's had. And he got the grip. He doesn't get up on the plane. He's going to go in and watch the film. He's doing everything. He should see the hundred feet of my foot. Come back this morning. Now that it's not even sitting here for another game. You know, putting this power on throughout all these days. He's like a coach, man. He's like a coach. Chip Kelly's in full exchange. Your mind about maybe like the idea of tackle versus guard.
Obviously his offensive predilection was for like offensive blind play, room game. Has anything that part of you settled in the guard? I would say maybe. I don't know. But I mean, when I'm pretty sure you got the job, I was really excited because I'm one of those guys who's the tempo. I can run with the tempo. You know what I mean? I'm playing basketball all life and set up football. And I feel like just the fast pace often, so we're running. It really fits the guys we have right now. I'm really excited for that. I know you can throw a football like 65 guys. But can you kick a football? 75 years ago. I think you're 55 years ago. Blake is just. No. Probably question. Lincoln, what's your question? How is your room amp computer? He's a blessing, man. I can't complain. He's a great guy. What's his name? His name's Lincoln. Teen Hoes. Who's Cleaner? Oh, he's Cleaner. I think we're both really clean. That's why we kind of pick each other's roomies because we're very clean. And we don't like our rooms really messy.
Well, it's true though. It's true. They're both pretty clean. Luke, are you still a cross-training at Tagel some or if you just been all-guard this break? Oh, so far I've been all-guard. I really don't know. Like I said, I'm taking it practice by practice. I could end up being back at Tagel, I could not. But, you know, I'm just really focused in on this past practice and the next one is fun. What do you mean? Yeah. Oh, that mean a lot. You know, you put a lot of work in to play here. And it's been a dream just from being in Ohio kid and I'm from Ohio kid's perspective. I mean, that's the biggest switch possible. I would have thought it would be pretty cool. What was it like to last year at first game getting on the field for the first time? It didn't feel like, this is going to be a weird answer, but it felt like I was playing a game yet, if that makes sense. I was pretty locked in. I felt like just no anxiousness, no stress, no nothing. I just went in that first game. I was like, shoot out in here now. It's time to roll. You know? It didn't really hit me. I was like, it didn't even hit me after. But my mom was like, what would you feel there?
And if I get out there at Indiana, I just like, honestly, I don't know. I felt less nervous. I didn't ice go in. It makes no sense. What did you see in the back of the line? What did you see in the back of the line? What did you see in the back of the line? I was just showing you the thing. A lot. I mean, I'm learning from Josh Ann Austin. I think prior to the world, my biggest role model here is my big brother and my first baby. Tell him I'm a good dear. I don't want to do it. Yeah, no. Yeah. Yeah. So, yeah, PD and Austin, those are my guys, man. I mean, even Miles too. I mean, all three of them. Those are my roommates and they're progressing every day as well on. And I'm excited to see where they can get to. I'm excited to play on the field with them. Oh, yeah. You know, it's been really helpful. You know? Just keep in my mind just settled and straightforward on the next play. What do you think of Vegas? It's a great question. Like I said, I mean, I just need to make sure that I'm not going to be a good player. I just need to take consistent in my work. I think that's the biggest thing for me is just taking consistent and worried about the next play.
So, you got it from the guy you were in the play. Yeah. Wow, that's weird. Yeah, I guess they didn't want to get my nerves up, but like I was ready. I mean, I did, I took most of the ones, that's all camp and I mean, I was already, I was pretty much it. Yeah. I wasn't really nervous to start the game. What was his advice to you? Yeah. I mean, you're going against Tyleek and Tyle every day in practice. I mean, it's not different. Almost different. Are you now both two weeks into the two starts into the game as a player, you know, having that under your belt? I mean, I'm more confident. I know what's going on. I can see, like, I can see what's going on with the defense. I know what's going on. I know what's coming. I mean, I understand the game's a lot better than what it was. I don't say last year. Which adds up to what? Fast, sharp, me, etc. Yeah. You can play with that dust for a while. I mean, if we get out early, it's, you get the defense change in place. It's like, it's changing their defense. You start fast, I mean, they're trying to get the call in the play, but you start
faster. I'm not going back. I trust a lot of touchdowns. Yeah, of course, Dave is pretty much dead, though. You deserve to play, man. You know, in some formal fashion, what, will you expect this week in terms of your role? Um, wherever they need me, if it's left right, wherever it's, I need to go in, I go in and just talk to you in front of me. How do you like playing tackle? Um, took me back to high school days, but I should back in high school, I wasn't really random all the way. I really didn't do any passes, but it was fun. Change got my, made my feet better, I would say. How confident you feel like you could play there if you need me? If they want me there, I'll get some player. I mean, they need me, they need me. Awesome, the illness that swept through the office, the line room. A lot of times, the coaches and players have said that that was silver lining for the groom, you know, getting you experience among others. What was that like for you and double-dipping playing some tackle, playing some guard, the same practice. Um, it was based on a group effort, like for me, we had guys out and we just had to go
back practice. Um, all five guys, wherever they were playing, we just got to go. How much of that accelerate your development, like that time with the ones you were actually getting? They really did. Um, I was jumped in there. I didn't really know. So we wanted to practice with practices, but like after those, I was like, you're in my confidence, grew. Um, yeah. It seemed like there was sort of a settling in process for you and the Akron game, maybe play got better if the game went on and it really seemed to, especially in the ground game, things seemed to take off. What was there a moment when it clicked on the field for you? Like was there nerves and then a time of settling in? I guess how, taking you through kind of that first game mentally? Yeah. Um, first game, obviously you're going to have nerves for the first time in a starter, but then like after the first couple of plays, meaning you have nerves naturally, the first couple of play that I was good, I was rolling. Also, there's a weird meaning for the first time in a striker. It was also the first start.
Yeah. Um, you, yeah. It's, but like, I prepared well and camp and practice all week and I was, I was ready. Um, yeah. I have two multi-year starters. I did a lot. I mean, I couldn't ask them, hey, what we got here, but I was prepared well. I mean, I was telling Jimmy and said, it's like, hey, we're, we're blocks. It's not the emotional side of it. What's the guy from Ohio? What does it mean to start a game? Um, it was always my dream to come here and play and start and having that like, I mean, I just got to keep going, keep building those days and go games and keep building. What a much younger Austin, don't you think people from you that have? Um, no, not really. I don't think even I told my life, like, I asked my younger self, even committing, I mean, I wouldn't believe that now having a couple of starts.
Yeah. Awesome. Has this happened faster than you had been building these are coming up to play as a, I guess you're technically a sophomore. Play as a richer question. No, I knew that year two, I was going to see you some playing time. Now starting week one, year two, I didn't see that, but like, I was ready in spring ball. I knew I was going, I was going to play some soft things. What does it mean to you to not only get the opportunities to play, but like, you play well enough now? And coaching staff trust you. They just get the book out there, whatever the situation was. But they earned that so early on in year two. I guess it shows like my preparation, my hard work, and just everything I put into this and I finally show it up on a field. There are moments, the golf season, you need me in the spring. I didn't get it. I realized that you could play at this high level, with the ones, you know, if you need the best. Yeah, the definitely was in a training camp.
I mean, blocking highly can tie every day. Like, it feels, it feels a lot of confidence and doing it well and not like getting balled or anything. So there's defensive tag wasn't that easy. Hero and Jason Moore and Taiwan, all those guys, pretty much anyone on the deepened line, gets your face out of time. So, and Kay and Mack as well. So, yeah. I'm also going to put a lot of my heart on the work, like the power of accessibility. That would bring in a lot. How much can he help you? He helped me a lot. And I'm proud that he's our starting center, not someone else's, but I mean, he's like the captain of the line. He's another voice on the line with guys like Josh Fryer and Josh Simmons, Donnie and Tegr, that means another voice and another captain. Look, ways of having that, and I'm with this much experience helped. During the year in the middle of the middle of the line. Yeah, a lot. He can tell you, like before the play was going on and like how to block someone or like what
you need to do. And it helps a lot. Tegr, talk about how calm he is. How much does that benefit you? You have a guy who's kind of been there and seen the line. It makes us more calm, especially me and Tegr, as our first start. So we were up here with Seth. He brought us down. We were fine. Our emotions weren't high. We settled in. Is that something he tells you? Is that something you pick up on by how he's acting? How do you sense what he's trying to do? How he's acting. And what I mean, him, when we're on the side of him, both Josh Donnie and he was telling me that he's going to be a good guy. I was like, hey, cool. We got it. But it's pretty much like everyone. Oh, cool group. How much do you do that? As a first time starter, how much did you add in that? Me a lot. That was my first time ever using iPads. We didn't use the iPads in high school. But I mean, you can say like try to remember the defense. You can just come on a silent and bring them. We'll play and get help. That's really not.
Probably the first or second. But after that, I thought we'd say all right. Anyway, awesome. Thank you very much. It seems like training part is a part of the time the whole thing. They're getting bigger and stronger. Yeah. It's like the culture part. Yeah. How much of the fact is that part took your change? It's also, it's a lot. I mean, I feel like you can't be able to transform your body like I have with people here come and do that without having that mentality part with it. It's like we we always talk about competitions here and our culture is fight. So we're always here to compete. I feel like that is just that's what gets you in this mindset. When you talk about that transformation, can you just give us a little sense maybe with numbers or body fat or like what you do in the weight group, how big is that transformation? I don't have really specific numbers, but I just like it's more just like I can just I feel like I can just.
I feel like feeling when I'm playing like I remember how I felt to play when I just got here and now I know how how it feels to play like like just today like it feels physically different on my body. It's like it's just it's I'm getting used to that makes sense. Almost. You guys. I can't imagine feeling like that. But could you also said about you that you are just a completely different guy from last year? You're here to work. Just get it done. So you're here. Do you feel like you weren't at that place mentally? I think I was, but I think I had some. I would say like kind of like confidence issues like I was just but you know, I mean. I work past it and I know I can I know why I am and I know I can be here. So if you have confidence issues, how do you get through it? Is it yourself as teammates?
Is there somebody family that makes you believe that you can do it? I know I can do it. It's not like that's those are those are all it's on the past now. Did the past of play time in the very obvious opportunity guys had the stuff up with you on the business that helped you. Over that confidence issue there because it's now a never since it's opportunity. So kind of is just like. Just I mean it's just just being here like I feel like being here every day working with the guys every day. Just like you know you become this person that you might not have like. You might not have like felt like you were before that but like coming here working every day stacking these days like. Like you know, I mean I just feel like I realized who I am and I know what I can do now. Well I want to be able to have a person in this room but are you?
This is the second time to like convince yourself that you actually belong here. I knew I knew I could play here. I mean it's just it was like the like I just I don't know how to explain. I just like I've always known I could play here. It's just I'm just like let's go like I'm ready like I'm ready to attack. What are guys the first I think KJ was a big influence tie Hamilton tie league they all they all helped me a bunch last year. I just pushing through you know. I really plan as much so I just wanted to get like more experience under my belt so I can know bring younger guys with me because I've been. One of those younger guys we're seeing it like the first time. What have you seen from well because I feel like last year we all forgot about it because he's heard now he's running you know almost a second man up on you and tied. What have you seen you remember? Well as a workhorse he he goes stay quiet you're going to work hard and that's all I love about you.
He focuses he don't really talk much. He's going to get the job done do a job right. Really has any mistakes? What would be a successful season? A national championship? When all the games we want to lose anything we got a mindset that we can't be beat and we just got to go show it. That mindset different. It seems like you guys expect a national championship every year this year even more so you guys have all come back for this. You guys have all decided like that up as a month. Does that just keep feeling different or is there not really any difference? It's definitely a difference everyone working harder. We noticed our last run and we most of us don't have any years after this so we got to go go bigger going home and we're not trying to go home. Finish big. We know what you guys think of Michigan but when you look at what they did they won the national championship and you guys took them down to the final minute. You know what I mean? You were right there something goes a little different you guys could have won that game against them.
Does that tell you anything about like that hey you guys want to win a national championship but you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the national championship last year like you're that close. I'm saying we just like work harder that's kind of coach makes of saying you know nobody cares just work harder like those you know won't play Georgia the same thing. Last play you know they went on the winning atty so we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season I think we'll be fine. How frustrating is that you're that close against the last two national titles. Of course it's frustrating but you can't change the outcome you can't really dwell on it you just got to come back and work harder do things better than you did last year and hopefully the outcome will change. Is that as you get older you kind of learn and I thought I was working harder than you always find out there's a little more you could have been doing. Yeah definitely I mean that's how that's what growing up is basically in college and I thought freshman year I was working as hard as I could but now I look back at it I really wasn't working hard at all.
Compared to what I'm doing now so just to learn anything. 80 85 I mean I can it's all on me I just I think it's a little higher I was just trying to be funny but I mean it's all on me I just got to run harder. Yeah I think I think I definitely can last I was just you know we got to get the young guys to come along with us we can't play 50 snaps a game that's just too much on our bodies just everybody like online we got to get those younger guys to play you know get that pieces on the D line and all on and everywhere else so we can last that long run. Speaking of the life plan that you like playing that new snap today last year I don't know if any of us were really expected to play that next time.
Yeah I did unless we were like winning by like a lot I thought like there are no moments you know I can go sit down or something but we're playing them big games like you know Notre Dame to North those kind of games of course I want to be because I know I contribute and I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I get to jump. What stands out about Taden McDonald is he got the team of the guys in the second game. Oh yeah definitely K-Mac is a K-Mac animal y'all you haven't really seen it yet but in practice he shows all the time he's just he's growing right now he has to work I think he just has to get you know in the playbook things like that. You guys are about the exact same size you're both listening to six three you're three twenty seven he's three twenty six. Yeah I kind of look at him like my junior but you know K-Mac he's going to be a great player he's just got to develop more and get into playbook. So really a lot on you older guys there's that large group of young guys and then there's the seniors in the back is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys. Yeah definitely we got to be leaders like I said we got to have them play this year we can't just play all the snaps they got to get in there and get some work and we got to get them right
they're in all season so they can play and not just play they want to like contribute like make plays tackles sex. Yeah they're definitely some big dudes and they all work hard I've only seen much of something day two and I'm not passing on but throughout the workouts they've been working hard you know they're determined. I can say that and it looks like they're ready to work to make them. I'm going to give you a lot of great defense that you have big athletic defense attack so you can eat up space to also move you know right through this back. Is that an requirement maybe for a great defense to have guys like you that have some balls but also a great team? I think that is definitely I think if you look at the last couple of national championship winners are like team of North they didn't know they got two good detacled two athletic detacles look at Georgia two athletic detacles.
I think that's definitely need if you want to go on that big run and beat those big teams. If you think about this they don't define what is Georgia Jordan Davis and Janet Carter and let's miss again it's Chris Jenkins. Tell me more questions about how I mean you understand it because you play it but I feel like some time I don't know are people realizing how important defense tackles are a little bit more than they used to. I think so I think they're starting to develop to develop more and more of these like freakiest detacles. Yeah like in the combine just now you see in like those guys they're moving four to four seven eights and things like that so we'll see. And when you think about this freakish attack how do you think you fit into that mold of that kind of player. You watch that and say yeah that's me. I think I'm top notch when it comes to detacles but I don't want to you know get a big head but you know watch it come on. I watch it do the drills. I have to say like you're looking like my film so I think I'm up there.
You become like a artist when it comes to bad young passes. I think the way I extend your things. When you're going to bring practice you're not doing as much a weapon on the left hand. Do you have like a gold one? I don't remember how many I've lost your play. You have gold in my eyes. I mean as many as I can have I think I have more than that but I think he said it on the right hand. I think they can some of them and it's some of them where I like just missed it so. But I think we work on drills matching the hand I think that's goes big and what we do is a D line you know. Just affecting the quarterback is anyway you can it's just great for the defense you know just that little thing covering his eye you know he might throw it. A little bit to the left to our player. So it's something that you really really have to work on. That's one of the things that you've worked on the most. It's really your time here because there are a few guys that I've seen. Oh that passes. We don't have to ask this child.
I think I just have like an eye for the ball kind of. I kind of just look at the quarterback and just I see him like load up. I just try to get in his ways and sometimes he throws it to me. I don't know how you're taking it to the Ohio State quarterbacks game. I mean they get frustrated by you know we're a team you know we're just getting better. I should lot of a lot of different backs man they just learn and grow for them. You got to pick your top three backs and you got to go right now. I don't really have a top three but I'll give you I'll give you one. I would say, say quan, Gibbs and I like McCaffrey auto. He was injured this year. I like McCaffrey best back in this drive. I lead out of the yard that's y'all that's y'all decision. Playing with Will Howard when I'm going to remember most.
We're a Howard man he's just such a great lead such a great leader man. In moments where you know usually a lot of players they fold man he was just always calm and relaxed man. He just the leader that he was man that's one thing I'm going to remember about him. Yeah he's he's going to be really good man. He's on Coach Lock. I think he got the transfer in as well from West Virginia just that one two punch with them both as well. They're going to be really good backs and so James people's man he's smart the way that he goes about his business man. He's a great leader and so man he's growing you know just as a person and as a player and so man yeah definitely Ohio State you know that running back from his in great hands. Yeah coach Coach Hartline man he's full of energy man and he's creative as well you know I'm just learning from him as well. You know I'm trying to run more outside the backfield was being able to learn from coach Hartline and so he's definitely
creative at what he does and he brings a lot of energy to the team as well and so I think they'll do really good. Just intensity man and since he got the playoffs every game and it's like the intensity got you know higher and higher and so you know being able I know in the lead it's the same thing even if it's not the playoffs just every every game and intensity it keeps getting higher and higher and so yeah you just I know you got to bring it you know each and every day and come in and work just like Ohio State you know I definitely feel like Ohio State they definitely do a good job of preparing us for that you know I just remember even before going through this process I'll talk to a lot of players before then and they told me a lot of just about how much Ohio State prepared them you know for the NFL and so yeah. Yeah yeah I know I took a couple days off after the national championship and then shoot right after that I'm right in right
in sample Florida and I'm right to it and so yeah I think while trained I trained at your mouth performance I think it's called the House of Athlete or the compound now they did they did a good job managers on bringing us in and the way they went about training us man they were they did a really good job. The Bucking near know I haven't. Temple of Tampa nice this is nice it's a nice city man really nice. The 40 to broad and avert. Yeah yeah. No man it's really all about technique and then it's about mindset as well and so I say you know it's for the love of my brother who's for the love of will highway this for the love of the receivers who I got on the perimeter just making sure you know first of all my quarterback doesn't get sack and I I told will I think it was before the first game I was like I got your brother
it's I said man I'm not going to let you get hit you know and so I don't know if I don't know if I gave up a sack I'm not sure that but I know if I did I haven't given up too many and so man it's for the love of my brothers though man making sure the ball is getting their hands you know the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed in my game you can't really work on this you know in all season I feel like it's more so you know you got to put the pass on you got to go through some inside run you know maybe it's really just continuing run through tackles and so that's I feel like that's one of the areas in my game you know I want to continue to get better I feel like I did a good job of that my senior year and so I just want to continue to build on that yes I did yes I did I did me with new Orleans as well I never got that comparison actually I know I'm
going to come here sure yeah man I'm going to come here great great back man just what he does and those 101 matchups he's dangerous man and he's so smooth he's so smooth as well I'm not going to lie he's smooth yeah inside zone from stack being able to hit that thing downhill and I say the next one is probably just an option route out of the backfield you know and man and man coverage you're getting on that line backer and so yeah I say the man the biggest thing is the way that he carries himself man in the way that man he approaches the game he comes in with the mindset you know he's going to work every single week you know every practice you know he's working hard you know even shoot I don't know every good I think he had every game was a good
man and so but still man he always has the mentality to mindset that you know he's going to come in each and every day he's going to continue to work and get better man and so he's definitely man he's going to be a special player man he really is man a lot of ups and downs man it's just how you respond to adversity and I feel like that's something that God has definitely helped me to do better is this I'm not have something to lean on now you know I remember before I met him you know going through those adversity I had nothing to run to you know you can run to people but they still can't it's not too much they can't truly help you you know I feel like you know I feel like the only person that can truly help you is your relationship with Jesus Christ and so being able to lean on him you know he gives you in those moments where it's tough you know where it's tough and when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about he gives you he gives you that peace and comfort you know even in those moments man where it's so hard that you can't you can't explain it's like man I'm going through this but like how am I still
feel with this internal joy you know how do I have so much peace in this situation and so that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you and so you know the the back of the front of the power and judge and experience which aspect to you to those other individuals you want to follow and from being around power and and um man eight those guys have such a great mentality man I'm I just really love their mentality especially um Q as well you know I talked about will how are his leadership but Quinch on mentality man um that boy just yeah that boy just gifted you know you see you know sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like you know he should have a negative five yards and as soon as you know it you know he that running through somebody step on somebody and shoot it's a game to 10 it's a Q some of the things he does he just realizes two different things actually I think yeah man I think it's like he's just gifted man to be honest he's just gifted you know he's he's a big back you know he's strong and so you know he's he's able to do he's able to do those
things so yeah man it's definitely you know I look at his game and I want to you know at the same time I want to learn from Quinch on you know I want to look at this game is like man where where can I get better at as well you know that's the type of player I am I'm always looking to get better man I'm always looking to grow as a player Julian San oh yeah he's gonna be a great but he's gonna be a great quarterback man he's so so accurate and so um he's definitely man I know Coach Dez definitely going to get him right just you know um container grow as a leader container grow as a player and so he's going to be really good for a high state. Uh he's I know just a quarterback position um I feel like you know the quarterbacks in the past they've they've definitely been vocal and so I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to um ask him Julian San as well it's to be that vocal leader and lead the um and lead to offense and lead to team. Shoot man he has he has a bill like JK Dobbins and um I kind of see them you know similar similarities in their game as well and I know
JK Dobbins he was a great running back um I feel like he's not talked about his now um a lot but man his career here you watch his highlights is great I remember um before I recruit before I committed here I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights like every every one of his years here like four or five times and so man he was such a great back and um I feel like you know um when I see JK Dobbins when I see um James people I see similarities to both of their games I feel like they play the same. So I appreciate you all yeah I'll be going.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Um I think I got a lot bigger I'm like 240 you know like 244 right now last year I played it like 236 to 37. What does it feel like 244 or a belt you feel like almost a different machine out there. Yeah. What does it feel like to be running around out there like you are with more uh more back. I just feel like I'm like like like like more downhill like stronger like I'm taking all blocks better it's a big new.
You see don't think uh maybe that's not the correct term but to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year and you played quite a bit last year instead of what do you have to get straight in your head about being on the field that much more. Yeah. I just got to get ready to just play already more snaps. But are you are you how would you describe how much you're looking forward to it from an 8th and a half. Yeah. Yeah. I'm looking forward to it. I'm ready for it. My I'm ready for it. The text is open. It's a rematch and so to say but it's not really two different teams compared to the last time you all played and stuff. How has that enhanced this camp for you and this team getting ready for the where an opener of that magnitude. Yeah with the opener like that we've been um we've been emphasizing it a lot. We know we got coming so we know we got to do we've been prepared for it already this probably. Um I think Riley ready to play right now he he advanced freshman like he ended he in the book he stood in like he advanced and his measurements crazy like he saw like the saw lines.
Or you said you're ready. I think I know you're ready. What was that process like during last season could you feel yourself becoming more and more ready to wherever the team needed. Yeah because that's pretty much what my role was just whenever I was needed I had to step up so I feel like that's what built me into me being able to say I'm ready for this year. When you say ready is it more physical thing is it a mental thing when I say ready I think it's pretty much like everything physically mentally. Most of the most I think I'm there. A different is that feeling this year than last year. That's the most possible. Um asked a one more time. How different is that responsibility? That's just the most. Call that. One last year you knew you were a whole way. Um I feel like it's uh it's a way bigger responsibility with me having to step up this year but. I kind of go about it the same way like last year I was intentional with everything I did I feel like this year it's going to be the same thing.
It's probably a little bit more. Somebody who some reason. And what word? Somebody where to watch. Uh I say. Scrab my guy I say like when you think of me you think of like a like a bully like a silver bullet. I don't really a bullet. I'm always on the ball. That's how I like to play and think. No I ain't got to be my nickname but. Oh yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's like. How does that fit you and what are you enjoying about? Um think it fit me because. I don't know I just like the defense. I feel like we got like you said we got a lot of freedom and we moving around a lot. A lot of the times is like no I don't know I don't really not answer that. That's okay does it?
You can go on your instincts a little bit more maybe and it's not so. Thinking of too much. I don't even know if I say that because there's a lot of thinking going on but it's like. I just like his deep I like her. I like her deep I like what you got going on. What was it sad when CJ left the way? Uh now I want to say that I was kind of like happy for you. Yeah that's what you want. No. No. All right. No that's my dog. So yeah kind of missing a little bit but yeah I'm happy for you. Don't think you go ahead one last but coach days talked a lot about the guys who played some last year but maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for. I don't know if that wasn't maybe your national championship you guys will win your own. How much do you feel that is a guy who certainly contributed last year but will be in this bigger role and a lot of some of your classmates? Yeah I do feel like um yeah I do feel like I did win a nati last year but like you said my role wasn't same as how it's going to be this year so yeah.
I definitely want to go get another one experienced that like feeling with me be on the field a lot more place. Great. Thank you very much. I'm very proud of you. I'm so proud of you. You need to offense compared to NFL especially with the way he uses receivers how do you anticipate your role changing it how do you view the offense from a receiver perspective specific. Yeah um I mean I think he likes to really push the ball down the field um he likes to be balanced he likes to give different looks to a difference you know we're going to not to try to get too much into it but you know we're going to use some motion move some guys around and things of that nature. I think for myself I feel comfortable playing any of the positions that is that is asked whether it's the slot the outside positions and unique part about our offenses. I don't think necessarily you play the X or the Z because the put on the formation of the hash you can be the opposite you can be the X but then you're to the field now you're the Z. So you got to really learn the entire concept and know where you're out in the field which I think makes everybody smarter players because you don't pigeonhole yourself I just play X you know I'm only know this position like you get in two minutes you're the Z now you got to know what to do you may have the clear out router you may have the backside dig like you got to know what you're doing so I think he doesn't just say like we're going to do this offense he's really trying to create an offense that it's our personnel really well.
That that field boundary thing. Yeah that's a thing in college but it seems like it's more to clip is that is that something you're used to seeing another offense has been in. Yeah definitely I mean I think if if I'm on the left hash like technically I'm on the X you know I'm in the boundary but if we're on the right hash I'm still on the left side I'm really the Z in the concept because I'm to the field I'm to the strength of the tight end so I've been in offenses like is similar like that before and you know I just think he he's the right hand. He one thing I think that's really stood out as the compliments of our routes that we have so far I feel like we have a chance to really run similar stems but there's different routes off those stems and things like that which I think for receiver like myself who. You get you know a really good look at DB's and they study your film they study your splits like having routes that look the same but break off a different. Different different angles is extremely important because it feels like you have some versatility in your bag to go out with versus like you got this hit you again your backside like that's all you got you know I mean so.
Yeah he's just been a really good player person to work with and he's been really communicative with the leaders and how we want this offense to look like in some of the ideas that we may have as well so it's it's been a really cool transition. You talk about the transitions you've heard all offense in three years probably your fourth and six years yeah how do you not kind of build up some barriers yeah man I got to do this again right I think you know human nature is is always a factor in whatever you do in life but I think I try to make a conscious choice of coming in with a new year mentality each and every year and I think it's easy because we've had so many changes and it's been great working with. Marcus and Jaden and Jeff and Sam all of everybody like it's been great with working with all the quarterbacks and I just have a mentality and not really being complacent like I try to really focus on the things that I I can come back better at this year and I've been working my my butt off to do that so I think the easy thing and when I was younger you're like dang like you just want that consistency you know I mean like you want that.
Something you could depend on but like life isn't life isn't always like that so I've been reinvigorated because of just the energy that DQ brings into our building each and every day and and the coaches as well like it's fun competing you know I mean and sometimes I could get lost in the grind but I think the reason why you make it here at this level is because you you fall in love with the competition of it and I think the competition brings the success because that is really where you the iron truly sharpens iron so you know other guys are going to make plays but we get excited to go in there and know that the next day we're going to go right back after the defense. And so for myself, I'm just looking forward to continue to grow with the quarterbacks that we have. I'm in year six now, which is extreme blessing. And one of the leaders in our room, and I just try to take the bull by the horns with that. And so that's really been my focus. And you know, I'm excited for another year.
To us, it's looked like you're being more vocal on the sidelines. Yeah. To help young guys. Definitely. Something you decided this offseason? I think that's been a part of my maturation process as a leader. I've always seen myself as somebody that was a leader by example. But from coaches and other teammates I've had over the years, guys like to hear what I have to say for whatever reason sometimes. You know, and I think the biggest thing where I've tried to figure out where I fit in with my vocal leadership is, I never wanted to be like a dictator. You know what I mean? I never wanted to tell guys what to do or be a yellow or things like that. Like when I say something, I wanted to have power. I wanted to have meaning. And I hope, you know, the guys would feel the same way if they were to ask them that question. Because I want to see all these guys win, man. Like it's hard to make it in this league and stay in a career. And so anyway, I could help the receivers, the DBs. I'm talking to some alignment. Johnny, who's rehabbing his foot. You know what I mean? Like everybody has a role.
And everybody has a different story and path. And so if I could share what I've been through my testimony to help them or do things that kind of slow down the process, I'm going to try to do that because we need everybody from the rookies to the 10 year vets to make this thing work. So more so, I try to speak to what I know. And really those honest conversations that I try to have with guys, what they know I'm coming from a good place. And I think I'm not the type of guy where I'm just going to talk to them. Like if they see something, like I could take a coaching point from Luke McCaffrey. I could take a coaching point from Deami from Jahan from Marcus from anybody. You know, like I think that's what makes you a great player when you can really be coachable from anybody and not take it from a personal standpoint. Hi. Good. Going back to what you were saying about Cliff and the offense, how is he as a teacher in teaching all this? Yeah, I mean, I think he does a really great job of making things simple, first and foremost.
He doesn't overcoach. And I think that's the trust that he has in our group and his coaches, our position coaches to fill in the details. So we'll have an install meeting and it'll be a good amount of time. But then our position coaches will have time and we'll make it specific to that position. And so then we'll come in and have a walkthrough. And then after that, we'll have another walkthrough. And so I don't think there's been a time where I've come out here and I'm kind of worried about what I got. You know what I mean? And when you get into certain offices, there could be so many details where you could be overwhelmed. And I think then the forces, it kind of separates guys in a sense that like one guy may study more than another guy. But when you have these, these sessions that we have where we're having an installs in the morning, we're having two walkthroughs and then we're coming on the field and doing it. I think you notice a lot of guys are playing a lot faster and more confident because he's keeping it simple. But also he's very particular in what he's expecting. But it's not a lot. So there's not a pressure to get it right.
But at the same time, you know it's expected of you and you know you're going to have the tools given to you to be successful out there on the field. And this offseason, just the totality of change from front office players coaches, the turf field. What does that been like for you just to see what's going on? It's been fun. You know I think from Mr. Harris and the entire ownership group down to Adam Peters, down to DQ, down to Jada, who we drafted and bringing in Marcus and Jeff and all those guys. And down to leaders, we have on our team. I think it was extremely specific on the way they tried to build this thing going into this year. First of having the right people bringing in leaders, bringing in guys who love to compete. First thing that DQ said when he came here was in his first meeting. Like if you love to compete, this is going to be the place for you. And I love it. You know what I mean? I love bags and going at it with the DBs every day. Like the little mundane stuff can seem a little boring. But I think that was where you make the gains during the offseason where you're really focused on.
Hey, I'm going to give all I got for this day and I'm going to get better. And then I'm going to learn from the film and come back tomorrow and ready to do it again. And he also understands like the benefits of having breaks. Like he's giving us breaks. We've had weeks off here and there that we can compose ourselves. But then come back and give it all we got. You know what I mean? And when you got a coach that understands the physicality of an entire season where you guys do need breaks by the same time we're going to get after it. It makes it fun as a leader because you can take that to your room and be like, yo, we got these we got this week. You know what I mean? That's extremely important. But you know we have this little break coming up where you're going to get your your mind and your body and your soul right. So coming into this season, I'm really optimistic of what we can be this year. And I think it started with the foundation that the ownership group and the entire staff has built. And now it's on myself as a leader to continue to hone that in into the locker room. But I think it's great because we have so many great leaders from all across the league who have won and we got Bobby Wagner in there.
You know what I mean? I asked a Hall of Famers. So like, you know, being able to have kind of guys like that that you can lean on that can sometimes take over that leadership role where it doesn't fall on one person. I think it's extremely refreshing and knowing that everybody's on the same page and the message is the same allows you to go out there with confidence and always expect to know you. Terri, you seem to spend many of your off seasons learning about things beyond football. How happy is what happy? Did you do anything to this off season so far? To hobbies or increase your knowledge of this world around you? Let's see the question. Play a lot of golf. That day just keeps my competitive juices flowing. I'm planning a wedding. That's going well. And I've just been grinding like honestly. You know what I mean? I've been hungry this off season. I started working out pretty early and you start to see guys coming back and it's just fun to be here and competing and feeling like everybody's on the same page.
You know what I mean? And so for me, I'm a grind every off season but just this one just feels like it's the start of something new and special. And the foundation of is extremely important and to be a part of that, to have a hand in that. You know, it's an honor. You know, and I put a lot of expectation on myself to come out here and be the guy that I know I'm capable of and also like taking the next step. And being somebody that I quarterback that can trust and believe in. So this off season was pretty simple for me. It was just really about, you know, working and grinding and getting better. You talked about Jayden before. And so far, I know we haven't seen everything. But in terms of his arm strength, the throws, he's making anything surprising so far about the types of his ability in that regard. Definitely. I think after the second or third crosser that he threw, I started telling receivers like, hey, you got to get your head around. You know what I mean? Because again, each quarterback throws the ball differently and sees the field differently.
So sometimes on crossers, a lot of quarterbacks may like to see you cross the ball and get into that open zone over there. If it's a man flattened off, they like to see you get open with him. He has a really good anticipation over the middle of the field where he can make those throws and give you a chance to catch and run. And he's really accountable too. Like we had to play today where he felt like he missed me and, you know, it's not a big deal at all. You know what I mean? Him and I can talk to those things and there's been a play that I've talked to him about. I could do a better job. But again, like that open, that open form of communication from a rookie, I think is very rare. And I think it speaks to the confidence he knows who he is, but he's also not afraid to say when he's wrong. And he knows he needs room to improve. But his touch on the deep balls is amazing. You know, I love getting extra reps after practice with him. We're just catching the topping of a deep ball. That's big for me. You know, I mean, I get to track the ball over my shoulder and it's big for him to be able to get used to dropping the ball in the bucket. But he just naturally has an ability to throw the ball. He sees the windows really well.
And now he's just, you know, continue to get adjusted to the speed in the past rush. I think he's these reps that he's getting are unbelievable during 11 on 11 because he's getting to feel pain and allen and DA and Cleveland Farrow. Like we got some dogs up there who are going to come after him. You know what I mean? And we got some great guys up front who are going to protect them. And so these reps, I feel like are even better than just seven on seven. Seven on seven, I think he could do in the sleep to be fair. Like he throws the ball really well. But when you get this 11 on 11, two-minute drill, you're putting them in game like situations. And I'm looking them in his eye. I'm like, we play a real ball now. Like we, we, we plan. You know what I mean? And you just see no, no anxiousness in his game and his demeanor, which is extremely exciting. And then, you know, he's extremely lighthearted and he's always smiling. So he's joking with lime and d-line. He's just cool with everybody. And like I said, like for a rookie quarterback to come in like that where guys are gravitating to him. And he's not afraid to be who he is. That's dope. I think he has a bright future for himself. Last one.
The tough losses, the tough seasons can weigh on a player. Sure. You're entering the prime of your career. And J.A. kind of mentioned it last year. All he cares about is winning. He wants to win now. Is there a sense of urgency? You obviously always want to win. Yeah. Knowing that, you know, you're getting to the prime of your career. Like you want to win now. Yeah, I think that's a fair question. I think, you know, you start to evaluate when you, I mean year six and you know how fast it goes. And I try not to put the cart before the horse. Or looking too far ahead by the same time. You do want to win. You want to be a part of a winning culture and have a chance to win the Super Bowl and the playoffs and all those things. That's why we do this personally. And I'm just excited with being a part of an organization in the environment where now like everybody is on the same page in the message is uniform. And it speaks from the top down. And it reflects the guys that they're bringing in. You know, all the guys that they brought in are guys who are hungry who are competitors who not only fighting for spots, but are going to help us win games.
And when you're around an environment like that, like that, that makes you excited, makes you hopeful. And, you know, you don't know how it's going to turn out until we start playing games. But the foundation is extremely important. And I think this offseason, we've really done a great job of building that. They have. And then when a coach Quinn guy here building with this team. So I feel like we're going to be going into this offseason really knowing we all got to do individually to become ready for camp. But the message is clear to come back to camp ready to compete and be ready to win. Thanks, Derek. Appreciate you guys. Yeah, we should. One of the funniest guys on the team right now. I really plan as much. So I just wanted to get like more experience under my belt. So I can know bring younger guys with me because I've been to a lot of. One of those younger guys we're seeing it. It's the first time it's heard all your life. What do you see from well because.
I don't know if I should have real forgot about it because he was hurt. Now he's running. You know, almost a second man up behind you and tied. What have you seen? What was the workhorse? He he goes, stay quiet. You're going to work hard. And that's what I love about him. He focuses. He don't really talk much. He's going to get a job done. Do a job right. Rarely has any mistakes. What would be a successful season? A national championship. I ring when all the games we want to lose anything. We got a mindset that we can't be beat. We just got to go show it. It seems like you guys expect the national championship every year. This year even more so you guys have all come back for this. You guys have all decided like that. Is that this is to feel a difference or is it not really any difference? It's just the same work. It's definitely a difference. Everyone working harder. We noticed our last run. Most of us don't have any years after this. We got to go bigger, go home and try to go home. Finish big.
We know what you guys think of Michigan. But when you look at what they did, they won the national championship. And you guys took them down to the final minute. You know what I mean? You were right there. Something goes a little different. You guys could have won that game against them. Does that tell you anything about like that? Hey, you guys want to win a national championship. But you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the national championship last year. Like you're that close. So I'm saying we just like work harder. That's kind of coach makes a saying, you know, nobody cares. Just work harder. Like those, you know, we'll play Georgia the same thing. Last, last play, you know, they went on the win in 90. So we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season. I think we'll be fine. How frustrating is that? You're that close against the last two national titles. Of course, you know, it's frustrating. But you can't change the outcome. You can't really dwell on it. You just got to, you know, come back and work harder. Do things better than you did last year. And hopefully the outcome will change.
Is that as you get older, you kind of learn. I thought that was working hard, but then you always find out there's a little more. You could have been doing it. Yeah, definitely. I mean, that's what growing up is basically in college. I thought freshman year I was working as hard as I could, but now I look back at it. I really wasn't working hard at all. I'm going to pray to what I'm doing now. So just to learn anything. If the standard is a 60, then the answer is like, what do you need it to be to be your best? Uh, 85. 80, 85. I mean, I can, it's all on me. I just, I think it's a little higher. I was just trying to be funny, but I mean, it's all on me. I just got to run harder. Get the shape. The idea of a potential is 16 or 17 or 17. I think I'll call that out there. I think we, I definitely can lie. I was just, you know, we got to get the young guys to come along with us. We can't play for the snaps again. That's just too much on our bodies. Just everybody like online, D line. We got to get those younger guys to play. You know,
I think I can call that out there. I think we, I definitely can lie. I was just, you know, we got to get the young guys to come along with us. We got to get those younger guys to play, you know, get that pieces on the D line and the O line and everywhere else. So we can last that long. Speaking of that, if you like playing that new snap to game, I'll see your development. I don't know if you have a way to expect to be put that next. Yeah, I did, unless we were like winning by like a lot. I thought like there are no moments you know, I can go sit down or something. But we're playing them big games like, you know, Notre Dame, too, or North, those kind of games. Of course, I want to be in, because I know I can contribute. And I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I can get the job done. What stands out about Kaden McDonald and his he got that you guys in a second? Oh, yeah, definitely. K-Mac is a K-Mac's animal. You haven't really seen it yet, but in practice, he shows all the time. He's just, he's growing right now. He has a work ethic. He just has to get, you know, in the playbook and things like that. You guys are about the exact same size. Listen, you're both, listen, 6-3, you're 3-27, he's 3-26.
Yeah, he's, I kind of look at him like my junior, but you know, K-Mac, he's going to be a great player. He's got to develop more and get into playbook. So really a lot on you older guys. There's that large group of young guys and then there's the seniors in your back. Is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys along as well? Yeah, definitely. We got to be leaders. Like I said, we got to have them play this year. We can't just play all the snaps. They got to get in there and get some work. And we got to get them right, burn the offseason. So they can play. And not just play, they want to like contribute, like make plays, tackle his sex. It seems like these guys get bigger. Each one of the first McLeod's is bigger or bigger. And those guys kind of, those are going to kind of while you're in the cell. Yeah, they're definitely some big dudes. And they all work hard. I've only seen much of something a day too when I'm passing on. But throughout the workouts, they've been working hard, you know, they're determined. I have to say that. And it looks like they're ready to work with me. How important is those? It feels like there's a lot of great defenses that you have big, athletic defense attacks
that you can eat up space. But also, you know, right? Because I have an environment maybe for great defense to have guys like you that have some balls. But also a great feeling. I think that is definitely, I think if you look at the last couple of NASA Machines and winners, like Team up North, they didn't know they got two good detacles, two athletic detacles. Look at Georgia, two athletic detacles. So I think that's definitely neat if you want to go on that big run and beat those big teams. You think about this. If there was a fight by the defense attack, it's like, what's Georgia? Jordan Davis and Daniel Carter. Let's miss you again. It's Chris Jenkins. Tell us a more questions. You might be wondering how, I mean, you understand this because you play it. But I feel like some time I don't know. Are people realizing how important defense tackles are? A little bit more than they used to? I think so. I think they're starting to develop more and more of these like freakiest detacles. Yeah. Like in the combine, just now, you see in like those guys, they're moving four to four seven eights and things like that.
So we'll see. And when you think about this freakish attack, how do you think you fit into that bowl of that kind of player? You watch that and say, yeah, that's me. Yeah, definitely. I think I'm top notch when it comes to detacles, but I don't want to, you know, get a big head, but you know, watch it come on. I watch the dude do the drills. I have a tape here. You're like, you're looking like my film. So I think I'm up there with all those guys. Do you become like a artist who comes to the band up passes the figure wags and your things? When you're going to spring frags, you're not doing as much a weapon on 11. Do you have like a gold one? I don't remember. I mean, as many as I can have, I think I have more than that. But I think they're counseling. I think they're counseling them and some of them were like just listed. So, but I think we work on Joe's matching the hand. I think that's goes big and what we do is a D line, you know, just affecting the quarter of Vegas.
Any way you can is just great for the defense. You know, just that little thing covering his eye, you know, he might throw it a little bit to the left to our player. So, so it's something that you really, really have to work on. It's really, that's one of the things that you've maybe worked on the most during your time here. Because there are a few guys that I've seen. Like, oh, that past few guys, we don't have to ask for the style. We kind of kind of expected. I think I just have like a, like, an eye for the ball comment. I kind of just look at the quarterback and just, I see him like load up. I just try to get in his ways and sometimes he just throws it to me. Oh, I don't know. I'm here to do it. To be a high state quarterback. I'm here to get back down passes. I mean, they get frustrated by, you know, we're a team, you know, we're just getting better. I should lot of, a lot of different backs, man. They just learn to grow for them. You got to pick your top three backs and get it all right now. One, two, three. I don't really have a top three, but I'll give you, I'll give you one.
I would say, say, Juan Gibbs and I like McCaffrey. Auto, he was injured this year. I like McCaffrey. Who's the best back in this draft? Best back in this draft. I lead out of the yard. That's y'all decision. Playing well with Howard. What I'm going to remember most. We're a Howard man. He's just such a great lead, such a great leader, man. Like in moments where, you know, usually a lot of players they fold, man, he was just always calm and relaxed, man. And he just the leader that he was, man, that's one thing I'm going to remember about him.
Yeah. Coach, Coach Hartlan, man, he's full of energy, man. And he's creative as well. You know, I'm just learning from him as well. You know, I'm trying to run more outside the backfield. It was being able to learn from Coach Hartlan. And so he's definitely creative at what he does. And he brings a lot of energy to the team as well. And so I think that would do really good. So what's your way to play on the way? That's what you want to train to do? Just the intensity, man. And the intensity of the playoffs, every game, man, is like the intensity got, you know, higher and higher. And so, you know, being able, I know in the lead, it's the same thing. Even if it's not the playoffs, just every game and the intensity keeps getting higher and higher. So, yeah, you just, I know you got to bring it, you know, each and every day and come in and work. Just like Ohio State, you know, I definitely feel like Ohio State, they definitely do a good job of preparing us for that.
You know, I just remember even before going through this process, I'll talk to a lot of players before then. And they told me a lot of just about how much Ohio State prepared them, you know, for the NFL. And so, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I know I took a couple of days off after the national championship and then shoot right after that. I'm writing sample Florida and I'm right to it. And so, yeah, I think while I trained, I trained at your performance. I think it's called the House of Athlete or the Compound now. They did a good job, man. They're just bringing us in and the way they went about training us, man. They did a really good job. The Bucking Nears, no, I haven't. Tampa, Tampa, nice. It's a nice city, man. Really nice. The 40 to broad and avert. I'm trying to do a great job.
Yeah. Yeah. No, man. It's really all about technique and then it's about mindset as well. And so, I say, you know, it's for the love of my brother. It's for the love of Will Howard. It's for the love of the receiver, so I got on the perimeter. Just making sure, you know, first of all, my quarterback doesn't get sacked. And I told Will I think it was before the first game. I was like, I got your brother. I said, man, I'm not going to let you get hit. You know, and so I don't know if I gave up a sack. I'm not sure that, but I know if I did, I haven't given up too many. And so, man, it's for the love of my brother's, though, man. Making sure the ball get in their hands, you know, the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed. You had to hit the front of the field later today. What is something you've been working on right now? In my game. You can't really work on this, you know, in all season, I feel like it's more so. You know, you got to put the pads on. You got to go through some inside run, you know, maybe. It's really just continuing to run through tackles. And so that's, I feel like that's one of the areas in my game.
You know, I want to continue to get better at it. I feel like I did a good job of that my senior year. And so I just want to continue to build on that. So you know what I was saying? Yes, I did. Yes, I did. So people try to look like, I'm going to bar out there. You get back in person. I can be mad with you. I did. I did meet with New Orleans as well. I never got that comparison. Actually, I know I have a Camarit. Sure, yeah, man. I have a Camarit. Great, great back, man. Just what he does and those 101 matchups, he's dangerous, man. And he's so smooth. He's so smooth as well. I'm not going to lie. He's smooth. So I mentioned playing the ball. You can do it. Yeah. Inside zone from stack, being able to hit that thing downhill. And I'll say the next one is probably just an option out of the backfield. You know, a man and man coverage. You're getting on that line backer. And so. Yeah. I say the man the biggest thing is the way that he carries himself, man.
And the way that man, he approaches the game. He comes in with the mindset, you know, he's going to work every single week. You know, every practice, you know, he's working hard. You know, even shoot. I don't know. Every good. I think he had every game was a good game for him, man. And so. But still, man. He always has the mentality to mindset that, you know, he's going to come in each and every day. He's going to continue to work and get better, man. And so he's definitely man. He's going to be a special player, man. He really is. I'm not going to be looking like a guy in the hotel last night. He's going to be out. Going to start getting, you know, some injuries. I know he's a match with him. When he was back running, what? He stepped down. When he was. Man. Oh, man. I'm going to say it. I'm going to say it. I'm going to say it. Man. A lot of ups and downs, man. It's just how you respond to adversity. And I feel like that's something that God has definitely helped me to do better. Is this, um, not have something to lean on now. You know, I remember before I met him, you know, going through those adversity. I had nothing to run to. You know, you can run to people, but they still can't.
It's not too much. They can't truly help you. You know, I feel like, you know, I feel like the only person that can truly help you is your relationship with Jesus Christ. And so being able to lean on him, you know, he gives you, in those moments where it's tough, you know, where it's low. And when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about, he gives you, he gives you that peace and comfort. You know, even in those moments, man, where it's so hard that you can't, you can't explain. It's like, man, I'm going through this, but like, how am I still filled with this internal joy? You know, how do I have so much peace in this situation? And so that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you. So, which aspect could be to those other individuals that you run to, from being around power to heaven? Um, man, those guys have such a great mentality, man. Am I just really loved their mentality, especially Q as well. You know, I talked about Will Howard, his leadership, but Quenchadon mentality, man.
Yeah, that boy just gifted, you know, you see, you know, sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like, you know, he should have a negative five yards. And as soon as you know it, you know, he, that running through somebody, still farming somebody, and shoot, it's a game of 10. And so, you know, I think, yeah, man, I think it's just like, he's just gifted, man, to be honest. You know, he's a big back, you know, he's strong. And so, you know, he's able to do, he's able to do those things. And so, yeah, man, it's definitely, you know, I look at his game and I want to, you know, at the same time, I want to learn from Quenchadon. You know, I want to look at this game and it's like, man, where can I get better at as well? You know, that's the type of player I am. I'm always looking to get better, man. I'm always looking to grow as a player. What's your last one to be? Drulin Sand. Oh, yeah, he's going to be a great, but he's going to be a great quarterback, man. He's so, so accurate. And so, he's definitely, man, I know Coach Dez is definitely going to get him right. Just, you know, continuing to grow as a leader, continuing to grow as a player. And so, he's going to be really good for how I stay.
I know just the quarterback position. I feel like, you know, the quarterbacks in the past, they've definitely been vocal. And so, I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to ask of Julian Sand as well. It's to be that vocal leader and lead the offense and lead the team. I feel like that's the best way to go. Sure, man, he has a build like JK Dobbins. And I kind of see them, you know, similar, similarities in their game as well. And I know JK Dobbins, he was a great running back. I feel like he's not talked about his none. A lot, but man, his career here, you watch his highlights is great. I remember before I recruit, before I committed here, I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights like every, every one of his years here, like four or five times. And so, man, he was such a great back. And I feel like, you know, when I see JK Dobbins, when I see James people, I see similarities to both of their games. I feel like they play the same. And so, appreciate you all, you have to go.
Thank you. Thank you.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Well, I got coming in last round, I knew the role. So I just attacked Eric Dave, really the same way. It's basically a van very rough physically. How different are you? Weight wise body wise on that?
I think I got a lot bigger. I'm like 240. You know, like 240 for right now. Last year, I played it like 236 to 37. I think it's 244 or about, you feel like almost a different machine out there. Yeah, like, what does it feel like to be running around out there like you are, but with more, more, more bands? I just feel like I'm like, like, like, more downhill, like stronger, like I'm taking all the bloods better. It's a big, yeah. Is it daunting? Maybe that's not the correct term, but to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year. And you played quite a bit last year and stuff. What do you have to get straight in your head about being on the field that much more? I just got to get ready to just play 30 more snaps. But are you, are you, how would you describe how much you're looking forward to it from an 8-10 point? Yeah, I'm looking forward to it. I'm ready for it. My, I'm ready for it. The text is open. It's a rematch and so to speak, but it's not really two different teams compared to one time you all played and stuff.
How is that enhanced this camp for you and this team getting ready for the, where an opener of that magnitude? Yeah, with an opener like that, we've been, um, with the emphasizing in a lot of, we know we got coming. So we know we got to do, we've been prepared for it. Already just probably worked today. I think Riley ready to play right now. He, he advanced freshman like he in the, he in the book, he studied in like, he advanced and his measurements is crazy. Like he saw like the saw line to him. You said you're ready. I know you're ready. What was that process like during last season? Could you feel yourself becoming more and more ready for whatever the team needed for you? Yeah, because that's pretty much what my role was. Which is whenever I was needed, I had to step up. So I feel like that's what built me into me being able to say I'm ready for this year. When you say ready, is it more a physical thing? Is it a mental thing? When I say ready, I think it's pretty much like everything physically, mentally, mostly. I think I'm there. A different is that feeling that you're a bad last.
Oh, asked one more time. How different is that response? Feel. That's. All that. One last year. New year. Oh. I feel like it's a, uh, it's a way bigger responsibility with me having to step up this year. But I kind of go about it the same way like last year, I was intentional with everything I did. I feel like this year it's going to be the same thing. It's probably a little bit more. Somebody. Somebody. How do you do that? And what word? How's anybody working with you? Uh, I say. Scrabbing. Can I say that when you think of me, you would think of like a, like a bullet, like a silver bullet. I don't really a bullet. I'm always on the ball. That's how I like to play and think. You know what I'm about to say? No, I ain't got to be my nickname, but. So I'm saying that the. Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. It's like. What's your focus for suspicious style and how it's free? I mean, how does that fit you? And what are you going to show me about? The playing in that kind of style. Um, thinking fit me, because. I don't know, I just like the defense. I feel like we got. Like you said, we got a lot of freedom, man. We're moving around a lot, a lot of the times, just like, no, no. I don't know. I don't really not answer that. That's okay. Does it. Kind of. It's a go on your instincts. A little bit more, baby. And it's not so thinking of too much. I don't even know if I say that because there's a lot of thinking going on but it's like I just like it's Dave's I like how to put it to the deep is I like what you got going on Now I want to much sad I was kind of like happy for you Yeah, that's what you want That's my dog also yeah kind of missing a little bit, but yeah, I'm happy for you
Played some last year, but maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for That wasn't maybe your national championship you guys How much do you feel that is guy who certainly contributed last year because we'll be in this bigger role and Yeah, I do feel like Yeah, I do feel like I did win a nadi last year, but like you said my role wasn't same as how's gonna be this year So yeah, I definitely want to want to go get another one experience that like feeling maybe on field a lot more place Oh, Bill thank you very much Kind of have a lot of meters on the D line at the D in position so we kind of all kind of just kind of talk to each other We love it. We all competitive people we all love to fish together And I feel like the best side of all this feel like we're all just Kind of bouncing off each other and see what one person does and we kind of build into our toolbox and we all kind of just
Kind of build one great big one You So I definitely did it in high school I was pulled back and a little bit tied in so I feel like It kind of saw what I could do there in coach Wilson I was to you love watching it to before you left and Feel like you playing that seat and coach day's head and coach day kind of just look for it and try to do the best I could do it New playbook I did not know you got that far I like to think myself as a football player I can really play any position on the field you need me to just give me a Weak or two to learn it and kind of perfect it and try to do my best for you. Can Jack do the same thing. Oh, yeah Roughly that's why He's talking to coach Johnson on Tuesday about some of the conversations and sort of saw you
Um definitely kind of seeing it all the way through I feel like people kind of just see what happened and they don't know everything that goes into it How long the season is now what you got to do to prepare for and what they're happening all that time from here to to this so I feel like we definitely just coached it in me kind of connected and we kind of just talks man-to-man and Be kind of just straight to me and I feel like Making each other better every day. We got the four best the ends five best the ends honestly College football and we're gonna be one of the best you guys in football I feel like a better player today anymore Well, I feel like I've taken big steps in my roles of just being Responsible and being more of a leader and kind of stepping up and taking a step to kind of get out there more on the team and kind of bring people in and I feel like I'm kind of helping out more I mean sounds bizarre, but I mean the season goes by so fast already
So when you're kind of like week 10 and you're like wow starting weekends, so now it's kind of Give you more time to kind of enjoy it kind of save it because Yeah, definitely definitely gonna have to have the mental stability to handle all those weeks and all those practice How much is Larry talk to you guys? Last question right here I mean he doesn't have to talk about it. We know about it. You see it every day We watched the film you see them all working together. We know what it could be. We know we could become so we know We we're right at the same place at the right time and God wanted us to be here And he knew we wanted us all to come together and kind of play together and be able to bounce off and Just perfect our craft together and I feel like we all are just great individuals and we come together Plan as much so I just wanted to get like more experience under my belt
So I can know bring the other guys with me cuz I think Will's a workhorse he he goes statewide you know work hard and that's what I love about him. He Focuses he don't really talk much. He's gonna get the job done do a job right really has any mistakes When all the games we don't want to lose anything We got a mindset that we can't be beat which you gotta go show This year you more so you guys have all come back for this you guys have all decided like that Definitely a difference everyone working harder. We noticed our last run that we most of us don't have any years after this
So we got to go go bigger home and we're not trying to go home Finish big we know what you guys think of Michigan But when you look at what they did they won the national championship and you guys took them down to the final Minute right you know what I mean? I mean you you were right there something goes a little different you guys could have been one that game against them Does that tell you anything about like that? Hey you guys want to win a national championship? But you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the national championship last year like you're that close So I'm saying we just like work harder. That's that's kind of coach makes of saying you know Nobody cares. Just work harder like those no one played Georgia is the same thing Last last play you know they went on the win in 90 so We just got to get over that hump at the end of the season. I think we'll be fine Of course as you know it's frustrating but you can't change the outcome you can't really do it on Duel on it. You just gotta you know come back and work harder do things
Better than you did last year and hopefully the outcome Yeah, definitely I mean that's how that's what growing up is basically in college I thought French me I was working as hard as I could but now look back at it I really wasn't working hard at all compared to what I'm doing now. So just to learn anything 80 85 I mean I can it's all on me. I just I think it's a little higher I was just trying to be funny, but I mean it's all of me. I just got to run harder I think I think we I definitely get lies I was just you know we got to get the young guys to come along with us
We can't play 50 stamps a game. There's just too much on our bodies Just everybody like online D line. We gotta get those younger guys to play you know Get that pieces on the D line and O line and everywhere else so we can last Yeah, I did unless we were like winning by like a lot I thought like there are no mom is you know I can go sit down or something But we're playing them big games like you know Notre Dame to North those kind of games I of course I wouldn't be because I know I can contribute and I won't want put that on anyone else when I know I get a job Yeah, definitely came back as a came back to animal y'all you haven't really seen it yet But in practice he shows all the time. He's just he's growing right now He has to work at the kids has to get you know in the playbook and things like that
You're both listening six three you're three 27 he's three 26 Yeah, I kind of look at him like my my junior, but you know came a he's gonna be a great player He's got to develop more and getting to play Yeah, definitely we got to be leaders Like I said, we got to have them play this year. We can't just play all the snaps They got to get in there and get some work and we got to get them right during the all season So they play and I just played they want to like contribute like make plays tackles sex Yeah, they're definitely some big dudes and they all work hard I'm really seeing much of something day two I'm not passing on but throughout the workouts they've been working hard you know they they're determined I'd say that and it looks like they're ready to work at me
I Feel like There's a lot of great defenses that you have big athletic defense attacks who can eat up space But also you know right that is that Is that an environment maybe for great defense to have guys like you that have some fault but Also a great thing. I think that is definitely I think if you look at the last Couple nice and a championship winners like see my North. They didn't know they got too good Detackled to athletic detackers look at Georgia to athletic detackers I think that's definitely need if you want to go on a big run and beat those big teams Michigan it's Understand More than they used to I think so I think they're starting to develop to develop more and more of these like freakiest
Detackers. Yeah, like in the combine just now you see in like those guys they're moving for the 478s and things like that So we'll see and when you think it when you think about those freakish Yeah, definitely I think I'm top-notch when it comes to detackers But I don't want to you know get a big head But you know watch the common I watch the dude to do the drills. I have to see you like look at my my film So I think I'm up there I Mean as many as I can have I think I have more than that But I think they said it I think they didn't count some of them and it's some of them where I like just missed it So but I think we work on Joe's matching the hand. I think that's goes big and
What we do is a D line, you know just affecting the quarterback is Anywhere you can is just great for the defense, you know just that little thing covered is I you know I think I just have like a like a eye for the ball kind of I kind of just look at the quarterback and just I see him I load up I just try to get in his ways and sometimes he just throws it to me I mean they get frustrated by you know we're a team you know we're just getting back I Should a lot of a lot of different backs man. They just learn to grow for them I don't really have a top three, but I'll give you I'll give you one I would say
Sequan Gibbs and I like McCaffrey auto he was injured this year. I like McCaffrey I appreciate who's the best back in this draft. I lead out of the yard. That's y'all that's y'all decision Playing with Howard when I'm going to remember most We're a Howard man. He's just such a great lead such a great leader man It's just like in moments where you know usually a lot of players they fold man He was just always calm and relaxed man. He just the leader that he was man. That's one thing. I'm gonna remember about him Yeah, he's shoot he's gonna be really good man. He's on Coastal like I think he got the transfer in as well from West Virginia Just that one two punch with them both as well. They're gonna be really good backs And so James people's man. He's smart the way that he goes about his business man He's mature and so man. He's growing you know just as a person and as a player and so man
Yeah, definitely Ohio State, you know that running back room is in gray hands You Yeah, um coach coach heartline man. He's full of energy man and he's creative as well You know, I'm just learning from him as well, you know I'm trying to run more outside the backfield was being able to learn from coach heartline And so he's definitely creative at what he's he does and he brings a lot of energy to the team as well And so I think that do really good You know just intensity man and since he got a playoffs Every game and it's like the intensity got you know higher higher and so you know being a but I know in the lead It's it's the same thing even if it's not the playoffs just every every game and intensity it keeps getting higher Higher and so yeah, you just I know you got to bring it you know each and every day and come in and work Just like Ohio State, you know, I definitely feel like Ohio State. I'm writing writing sample Florida and I'm right to it and so Yeah, I think while trained I trained at your morph performance. I think it's called the House of Athlete or the compound now They did they did a good job, man. They're just bringing us in and the way they went about training us man They were they did a really good job The bucket near know I haven't Tampa Tampa nice. This is nice. It's a nice city man. Really nice The 40 to broad and avert
Yeah, yeah, no, man It's really all about technique and then it's about mindset as well And so I say you know it's for the love of my brother. It's for the love of will highway It's for the love of the receivers who I got on the perimeter just making sure you know first of all my quarterback doesn't get sacked And I I told will I think it was before the first game. You know I want to continue to get better at I feel like I did a good job of that my senior and so I just want to continue to build on that Yes, I did yes I did me with New Orleans as well I never got that comparison actually I know I'm a Camera sure yep man. I would come here great great back man Just what he does knows 101 matchups he's dangerous man, and he's so smooth. He's so smooth as well. I'm not gonna lie he smooth Yeah Inside zone from stack being able to hit that dang downhill and I say the next one is probably Just an option route out of the backfield, you know and man and man coverage you're getting on that linebacker and so He
Yeah, I say to man the biggest thing is the way that he carries himself man in the way that man He approaches the game he comes in with the monster, you know, he's gonna work every single week You know every practice, you know, he's working hard, you know, um even shoot. I don't know every good He had a every game was a good game for him, man, and so but still man He always has the mentality to mindset that you know, he's gonna come in each and every day He's gonna continue to work and get better, man, and so he's definitely man. He's gonna be a special player, man A lot of ups and downs man is this How you respond to adversity and I feel like that's something that God is definitely helped me to do better Is this um now have something to lean on now, you know, I remember before I met him, you know going through those adversity I had nothing to run to you know, you can run to people, but they still can't it's not too much They can't truly help you, you know, I feel like you know I feel like the only person that can truly help you is your relationship with Jesus Christ
And so on being able to lean on him, you know, he gives you in those moments where it's tough You know where it's low and when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about He gives you he gives you that peace and comfort, you know Even in those moments man, we're so hard that you can't you can't explain. It's like man I'm going through this, but like how am I still feel with this internal joy? You know, how do I have so much peace in this situation? And so that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you and so Those other individuals that you run to, you know, are being around power to Him Um Man, those guys have such a great mentality man I might just really love their mentality, especially Q as well You know, I talked about Will Howard, his leadership, but Quincham mentality man That boy just yeah, that boy just gifted, you know, you see you know sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like
You know, he should have a negative five yards and as soon as you know it, you know, he's running through somebody step on somebody and shoot It's a game to 10 it's a Um shoot, I think Yeah, man, I think it's just like he's just gifted man to be honest He's just gifted, you know, he's he's a big back, you know, he's strong and so you know, he's able to do he's able to do those things and so Yeah, man, it's definitely you know, I look at his game and I want to you know at the same time I want to learn from Quincham You know, I want to look at this game is like man, where where can I get better at as well? You know, that's the type of player I am I'm always looking to get better man I'm always looking to grow as a player Julian San, oh yeah, he's gonna be a great back, he's gonna be a great quarterback man, he's so so accurate and so um He's definitely man, I know Coach Dez definitely going to get him right just you know, um continue to grow as a leader, continue to grow as a player And so he's going to be really good for high state
He's I know just the quarterback position, I feel like you know the quarterbacks in the past they've they've definitely been vocal and so I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to ask Julian San as well It's to be that vocal leader and lead the lead to offensive lead to steam He has he has a bill like JK Dobbins and um I kind of see them you know similar similarities in their game as well and I know JK Dobbins he was a great running back. I feel like he's not talked about his none A lot but man his career here you watch his highlights is great. I remember um before I recruit before I committed here I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights like every every one of his years here like four or five times and so man He was such a great back and I feel like you know when I see JK Dobbins when I see James people I see similarities to both of their games I feel like they play the same Appreciate you all yeah
You You
You Three Three One They rank Jeffrey Michael Nick They They tacky everyday really the same way. It's 10 of them very rough.
Finsically, how different are you? Weight wise, body wise, all that from your club? I think I got a lot bigger. I'm like 240. You know, I'm like 240-4 right now. Last year, I played at like 236, 237. What does it feel like at 244? Or you feel like a almost a different machine out there? Yeah, like a... What does it feel like to be running around out there like you are? But with more, more bands? I just feel like I'm like... Like more downhill, like stronger, like I'm taking all blocks better. It's a big... Yeah. It's... It's daunting. Maybe that's not the correct term. But to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year. And you played quite a bit last year and stuff. What do you have to get straight in your head about being on the field that much more? You just got to get ready to just play 30 more snaps. But... Are you... How would you describe how much you're looking forward to it from an age standpoint? Yeah, I'm looking forward to it. I'm ready for it. My turn. I'm ready for it. The Texas Opener is a rematch, so to speak.
It's not really two different teams compared to the ones that I'm going to play at and stuff. How has that enhanced this camp for you and this team getting ready for the... Where an opener of that magnitude? Yeah, with an opener like that. We've been emphasizing it a lot. We know we got coming, so we know we got to do it. We've been prepared for it. Already does probably work today. I think Riley ready to play right now. He advanced freshman, like he in the... He's studying like he advanced. And his measurements were crazy. Like he saw it like that. Or like you said you're ready. What was that process like during last season? Could you feel yourself becoming more and more ready for whatever the team needed from you? Yeah, because that was pretty much what my role was. Just whenever I was needed I had to step up. So I feel like that's what built me into me being able to say I'm ready for this year. When you say ready, is it more a physical thing? Is it a mental thing? When I say ready, I think it's pretty much like everything physically, mentally, mostly.
I think I'm there. A different is that feeling this year of the analyze. That's the most possible thing to do. Asked one more time? How different is that with child ability? That's the reason that you should see the most. And call that. And it was last year. You knew you were a home player. I feel like it's a way bigger responsibility with me having to step up this year. But I kind of go about it the same way. Like last year I was attention over everything I did. I feel like this year it's going to be the same thing. It's probably a little bit more. Somebody you. Somebody. It won't work. How many words you want? I say. Scrab my game. I say that when you think of me, you would think of like a like a bully, like a silver bully. I don't really bully. I'm always on the ball. That's how I like to play and think. No, I ain't got to be my nickname, but.
Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah, it's like. I think it fit me because. I don't know, I just like the defense. I feel like we got like you said, we got a lot of freedom and we're moving around a lot. A lot of the times is like, you know, I don't know. I don't really not answer that. That's okay. You can go on your instincts a little bit more, maybe. That's not so thinking of too much. I don't even know if I say that because there's a lot of thinking going on, but it's like. I just like it's deep. I like how it's pretty deep. I like what you got going on. What was it sad when. Did you laugh? No, I wanted to much sad. I was kind of like happy for me. Yeah, that's what you want. No, no. No, that's my dog. I'm not happy for you. I don't think you go ahead one last but coach days talked a lot about the guys who played
some last year, but maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for that wasn't maybe your national championship. How much do you feel that as a guy who certainly contributed last year, but will be in this bigger role and along some of your classmates? Yeah, I do feel like. I did win the national championship, but like you said, my role wasn't the same as how it's going to be this year. So yeah, I definitely want to go get another one experienced that feeling. Maybe on the field, a lot more place. Great. Oh, Bill, thank you very much. I'm going to be so happy. The championship has been weakened before and everything like that. Also, you get your teeth knocked in first game and you can't have that happen because then you really doesn't mean anything. And so just the concept mindset to continually get better is on the forefront of my mind and for front of anyone here, you can ask. Yeah, we look at the class sets every now and then I can be like, oh man, they're gone. No, it's been good.
I mean, the guys here are still here. I'm definitely kind of bonded together. Pretty good. Yeah, I mean, you know, Mark came in at a day is like in a class of 21 best class ever. And like, yeah, sure. You know, I can't really even, you know, just sitting to that. You know, I'm much left. But, yeah, I mean, to do what we can and do what we can for this team has been really important for all of us. And I think us now realizing where the veterans, you know, where the old guys now in the group has been, kind of strange. At least to begin with, you know, because you go from all those guys, you like Donnie and Josh and those guys and old Sudden. It's Sunday. We have a team meeting after the like the celebration, the shoe and all of a sudden the next day there's gone. And you know, it's just very different. So I think us being able to step up as, you know, leaders and as Vets to help bring along the team,
our units and this program has been really important. What are you doing overall? Two more questions. Just to try. But then you were sure of this one. The first year Luke said that Jake has been by so far. He didn't intend to talk about it. But he's playing for somebody who went through that. What have you been impressed by? We've been Jake. No, it could have been doing really well. I mean, I could go and he goes to work. He's extremely athletic, extremely flexible. You know, he's a young kid, obviously. He's a lot of development, a lot of. He's a little adversity. All of us do. But I think he's going through that right now, but he's been coming out on the better end of it so far. I'm excited to see what he can do because he's very impressive at this young stage. So I'm sure overall level of excitement just to be back with the rest of this year off of the blind group. You guys have these. Yeah, extremely. I mean, trying to just build that culture back up again, you know, like what we had last year.
I'm trying to do a little stuff here and there. And I think we're going to Ray raise a barbecue. I think tomorrow. So shout out Ray raise. But. But yeah, just trying to get that brotherhood back. Get that, you know, that oblock spirit back. Sure, it's coming soon. Hopefully. But just to kind of get those. Not those same faces, but those same kind of mindsets back in our group is important right now. And it's been fun to meet new guys from different backgrounds and stuff like that. And try to figure out how to build that and mend that together. It's been pretty cool. Now, as you are one of the most experienced veterans on this team, how much do you feel like you have to be a leader for the students here? Yeah, for sure. I mean, I think that comes. It's obviously I don't feel like it's natural to anyone to immediately step up and that's something I've been working on every day and talking to God about. But I have to understand that and that's something I want to continue to work on. I want to be able to be a guy that people can fall back on and like coach was saying before like we're going to have highs in those, but the great players, the ones being set our clocks to and I kind of want.
That's my goal is to be one of those people that you can do that. And I think for especially a very new set of eyes in the Woody, not only coaches, but players. I think it's very important to kind of keep that steady mindset. And I think for me, learning how to be a leader has been important just to not be too hard on myself, but also not let myself kind of slack off in some departments is trying to keep steady. Just your story itself, though, is testament of what it means to like for perseverance and stuff, too, though, right? Carson, I mean, you know, that's a, that's going to have to stand up from somebody to say that, right? I mean, just what do you, what do you think you've shown more than anything else in every card? Yeah, I mean, I've been blessed, you know, I've, you know, I've been blessed with a lot of adversity. I think that's definitely made me better on the back end. And, you know, coach, so it, coach, they always talks about it. And you don't, you know, great leaders aren't, you know, they can show it, but you know, a lot of people can show it. A lot of people can just talk about it, but to be about it is important.
And I think to me, now I've went through a lot of that adversity, I went through a lot of that stuff and my testament, you know, has been written in an interesting way. But I think for me to take that next step is really important for not only for this team, but for myself personally. Yeah, he's been doing great. I mean, he came in big, freaking strong. He's fun to be in the weight room with. He's kind of quiet. Like that's kind of my first impression on, but he's actually pretty funny, dude. He and his dad come over and they kind of joke around. So he's been doing a great job. He's been doing a great job for his size. He has like freaky athletic feet. Like I watched him do the ladders and that's a lot of massive overrun on those things, you know, doing a little acheshuffle. But I mean, he was killing it. And so he's been doing a great job. I can't wait to see how he kind of continues to develop throughout this summer and throughout this fall camp. First thing I know is that I'm not bad. What it all is to be. Yeah, Piggy's been doing great. I mean, he stepped up. Piggy. Yeah, everyone refers to this. Piggy is his username one time.
Everyone's big. But anyway, you know, Pig's been doing great. He's been able to step up and kind of bring around on those younger guys. You know, everyone's kind of trying to figure out their new roles. And I think he's been. He's been doing a lot of things. Big body guy that he catched by. Can run between the tacos. His feet are quicker than what you think for a big guy. Yeah, really good feet. We get balanced so that's what makes him good. That's what I saw. Is that a comment for a bigger back like? I don't know. I don't know. Many with that type of background, but he's high school. They try to play as an age back. When you look in the portal for running action, we try to make it running back. Does it matter to you if you have two different styles of running backs? I mean, one guy can use things better. One guy can use things better. He'll just say the best running back. I want to have different styles. I want to take the same thing.
We'll take the same thing. We'll take guys with different skills. Whether they're big guys, small guys, class coaches, in-between, attacking runners. I don't know. I don't want to take the same thing. Different. Different backs. You guys have built and clinched a lot of the lower red zone story. Did you guys enjoy the game? Was it important to find the back of the match the size of the CJA? No, I have my own opinion on the size they've been becoming the red zone. I had Jordan James out of the world. He's my red zone running show yard runs in freshman. Probably way to 2-10-12, which is not very big, but they didn't get any deal with it. Some guys got a nose sticking down his own. He played with a lot of aggression down here running. That could be CJA, that could be James, or it could be the freshman, no Jackson. It's just who has a nose for giving the nes on him. That's who I'm going to roll with him.
You don't have to be six, too. No, just because you're big, they don't make a top. We knew we could obviously, you know, freshman running back from it in the bow and I said, here, but what do you need to see from a freshman to feel comfortable with that playing? In the first thing, what they're on about, what they do, they're no small detail players. Take care of the ball. The second thing will be how good they are in the past, because it's the hardest thing to hide school back. Because they're not really sure in high school, but you have to understand the past, but all their files are new. So like Coach Day said, I'm here to catch my hand. So that's why I need to see first, and everything gets. I will understand to be so that I can be better. Do you feel comfortable with the bow and I say, where they're at, or at least, where their time is at? Yeah, I think they've been fine. I'd say I tell all the young guys, he's a marathon, I was playing. The first thing, the first you've been an armistice, I'm a special team.
You're an expert, you're a special team, then you earn the right to be a buck out of you. So they get out down the field. So I think they're training the right moves. First practice, like it wasn't there, it's under-built off-road, getting stuff to work on. I feel like they're definitely picking up quick. I mean, I was in their shoes one time, and I had Zach Harrison, Javonte, and Tyler Friedel in front of me. So I feel like I'm just trying to be one of those peers that they were for me, and kind of just giving them the steps to get there. And I feel like they're definitely picking up quick, and they definitely need to be one of the great Russian players. So we've got Shazu Sark about it.
JT and Zach probably have made a ton of their experience. So maybe that's some of the opportunities for me, to be able to do a lot of things. Is there a difference in the work going because you've been getting through half of camp with me in the last couple? I feel like all the camps I've definitely got my big course learned, and I love that. I ask Coach Jay for it. I love getting more reps because I just like protecting my craft. So I mean, some people may not need it, some people need it, but I mean, it's like you as me, it's like you're... I mean, for me, it's always just kind of getting my little details perfectly, like my steps, my footing, kind of just affecting my toolbox, what we call it, my craft, and just trying to be a... it's like a win-win, every play that you play, so it's kind of different. Yeah, definitely just getting stronger faster, everything all the above, but one of my big things is being a leader, and kind of just not trying to look at the steel look up to Jack and JT and kind of have my own kind of leadership and be able to bring people into it.
So I feel like I kind of have a lot of leaders on the B-line and have to be in position, so we kind of all kind of just count off the children and others. So I feel like it's up front, I feel like these are both of them, what about these guys? Playing with them all, you know, and playing with them all, you know, and just start getting them out and trying to push them. So I'm really pleased with these guys, how does that transition into... I'm competitive, and we love it. We all competitive people, we all love to fish each other, and that's really the thing with us that all of us feel like we all just kind of bouncing off each other, and see what one person does, and we kind of split it into our actual box, and we all kind of just kind of build one great thing. So you remember when last year when you got to get the shot, it was full back in the boat, and did they put you in that idea and two coached them, I mean, how the get come up out? Because you're a Jack, so I hear it's not me. Okay. It gives a touch down. So I definitely did it in high school, I was pulled back and a little bit tired, and so I feel like it kind of saw what I could do there, and Coach Wilson, I was, he loved watching it too, before he loved, and I feel like he planned that seed and coach Day's head,
and Coach Day kind of just went for it, and I tried to do the best I could to do it. Is that continuing now? I mean, I was just thinking of anything in the screen. New play about Guy Didano, and got that far. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, people. And how tough is that? Yeah, look at that. I like to think of myself as a football player. I can really play any position on the field, you need me to just give me a weaker two to learn it, and kind of perfect it, and I'll try to do my best for you. Can Jack do the same thing? Oh yeah. But what about him? Definitely, that's why. Okay, he was just talking to Coach Johnson on Tuesday about some of the conversations, and sort of saw you and about how to have some conversations after you and Jack decided to come back. Just got to wait until those were respected, and how did that help you maybe get the right mindset against what I'm going to do in the screen? Um, definitely kind of seeing it all the way through. I feel like people kind of just see what happened, and they don't know everything that goes into it, how long the season is now, what you got to do to prepare for, and what to happen, and all that time from here to to there. So I feel like we definitely just coached in me, kind of connected, and we kind of just talks,
man-to-man, and he kind of just sent straight to me, and I feel like we kind of both are pretty honest, and we know we're making it together. Making each other better every day, and we got the four best D-Ns, five best D-Ns, honestly, in the college football, and we're going to be one of the best D-Lines in college football. How do you feel about the player today that you work in this season? I don't, I feel like I've taken big steps in my roles of just being responsible and being more of a leader, and kind of stepping up and taking a step to kind of get out there more on the team, and kind of bring people in, and I feel like I'm kind of helping out more. I eat regular dinner at the past, so the T-P-H-C is up sale. I mean, the seasons go by so fast already, so when you're kind of like week 10, you're like, wow, it's already week 10, so now it's kind of, gives you more time to kind of enjoy it, and kind of savor it, because we're not even here for any further refreshments, but it's nice, crazy. But you don't want to spend only your power in the first month of the year, right? Oh yeah, there is that pace yourself there, but I mean, there is a mindset there that the season is.
Yeah, definitely, definitely going to have that mental stability to handle all those weeks, and all those practices. How much has Larry talked to you guys in the whole week? Last question right here. 2016, 2017, 4 NFL defense events, but it's all in the same location. How much does he talk to that guy? I mean, he doesn't have to talk about it. We know about it. We've seen it every day. We watch the film. We see them all working together. We know what it could be. We know what we could become. So we know we're right at the same, we're at the right place at the right time, and God wanted us to be here, and He knew we wanted us all to come together, and kind of play together, and be able to bounce off, and just perfect our craft together. And I feel like we all are just great individuals, and we come together at some special. How did your expectations, like, as you'd up with how do you feel, you've played at this point in the past? I feel like I've made the plays that came to me, and that's where the Ackington Control had more opportunities as years progressed, and been in spots to be here on the ball. But the expectation was to come here and contribute to the team,
and try to find a way to push the team to win games at high level, and to be better than they were in Laxia, and for me to play better than I was in Laxia. So really just coming to try to grow with myself and with the team. So that was my big goal, and I feel like I've done a good job, and the team has done a good job, progressing through the year and getting better. So yeah, that's all I'm excited about that. We're here to the right, but there may be a lot of men around. Yeah, I'm going to tell you, if you stand here right now, just feel like a different season. What does it feel like for you going into the playoffs? You know, you don't get the feeling you wanted necessarily to win your season, but here you are. I mean, what is that sense that you have right now that's different, maybe, about the regular season? I mean, everybody wants to say it's a new season in terms of, because if everybody's 1-0 and 0 right now, when you keep going, if you lose, you're done. But genuinely, that's how you get to play every game. You know, to play every game in my case, you're in the last game.
So for me, I don't think it's really any difference. We have to go play high level every game, and that can't be based at home. There's a player family. You know, so you have to go play every game like you said, same thing. So I would say in terms of that, no, you just have to play the game. Play the game is there. What feels difficult about this defense right now going into this, so you'll feel even more tired of being close together? What is your sense of the further it's sort of state of the defense? I feel like we progressed throughout this season. We had to make a change after game 6, because we lost, and we didn't play well at the end. And I feel like we'd grow from that and add to a better place. And over these past two weeks, off just realizing, OK, these are the things that we messed up throughout the year. These are what we need to fix. These are what this team is trying to exploit on us. So just really going back to everything, seeing what can do better for this kind of game and for the next couple of years.
Last couple of questions. Tell me you've heard from your fucking home. How does the Tennessee's wide split with your receivers impact you as a country? I feel like it makes the game more and more more game. It makes your receivers and your DBs at the play a second game than the guys up front. And it makes it truthfully like those guys have to do their job and these guys have to do your job. You've got to be able to stop the run with the people they've had and the run fit and yet to be able to stop their path with the people they have out there. So that's what they do and they do it at a really elite level. So it's going to be tough to go with. And then finally, what's the joint hop in Columbus, guess what I'm saying? Coach Nolz, we're talking about the speed at which there you guys are going to call them. The lane, this is built potentially because of the kind of fantasy in the play column. And what is a player of kind of band music that gets you to speed up your steps? Call them. All right. It allows you to get your clean senator. So earlier, just a ability to see the formation and see what keys that you have before the play
and have knowledge of your job and not really thinking. Being able to play and not think during the games is a really big thing. So whenever you can get the call that's faster and play at high level and play without thought. That's a really good thing for you. Okay, well thank you very much. Appreciate you. I did come up out with it because you already checked all your slots. Oh yeah. It gets touched down. So I definitely did it in high school. I was pulled back and a little bit of tidied in. So I feel like it kind of saw what I could do there in Coach Wilson. Honestly, he left Washington to the poor he left. And I feel like he playing that seed and coach Day's head and coach Day kind of just went for it. And I tried to do the best I could to do it. Executive chin wing now. New playbook. I did not know you. Yeah, I've got that far. You're going to get that. How tall percent of you are looking back on? I like to think myself as a football player. I can really play any position on the field. You need me to just give me a weaker two to learn it and kind of perfect it. And I'll try to do my best for you. Can you check me the same thing?
Oh yeah. But what? Graphically, that's why. I can't just talk into Coach Johnson on Tuesday about some of the conversations and sort of side you and you can get out to have some conversations after JT and Jack decided to come back. Just kind of went into those and you're expecting them. And how did I help you maybe get the right mindset against me? Definitely kind of seeing it all the way through. I feel like people kind of just see what happened and they don't know everything that goes into it. How long the season is now. What you got to do to prepare for and what's happening all that time from here to then. So I feel like we definitely just coached getting me kind of connected. We kind of just talks man-to-man and he kind of just sent straight to me. And I feel like we kind of both have been honest. And we know we're making it. We're making each other better every day. We got the four best DNs. Five best DNs, honestly. And then coach football and we're going to be one of the best D-Lines and coach football. How do you feel about the better player today at any more games in the season? Well, I feel like I've taken big steps in my roles of just being responsible and being more of a leader.
And kind of stepping up and taking a step to kind of get out there more on the team. And kind of bring people in and I feel like I'm kind of helping out more. How do you record your head around the past in the TKFC? Is it sound? I mean, it sounds bizarre, but I mean the season goes by so fast already. So when you're kind of like week 10 and you're like wow it's already week 10. So now it's kind of gives you more time to kind of enjoy it and kind of savor it. Because I'm already in your career for like refreshments for a place crazy. But you don't want to spend all your power over the first couple of months in a year, right? Oh yeah. There is a, that pace yourself that. I mean, there is a mindset in the season. Yeah, definitely, definitely going to have that mental stability to handle all those weeks and all those practices. How much has Larry talked to you guys about like that? Last question right here. 2016, 2017, 2017, 4-25, two French and one in style in the season. How much does he talk to you about that? I mean he doesn't have to talk about it. We know about it. We've seen it every day. We watch the film. We see them all working together. We know what it could be. We know we could become.
So we know we're right at the same, we're at the right place at the right time. And God wanted us to be here and he knew we wanted us all to come together and kind of play together and be able to bounce off and just perfect our craft together. And I feel like we are just great individuals and we come together at something special. You get like good coaches who believe in you and like they give you the tools to go out there and just play with confidence You know not their doubting your stuff like you got your teammates who got your back like my first play when I got up there to the seat Like when to sail I'd be in a germane like first thing they say is like no where you just go out there play with confidence You know you know the tools is usual tools. It's got to make a play and where about a play coming to you Now we're just old time to show job and just do it and then like say what coach wants like he gives me He puts me to position like like the drills we put in the work you put in the one-on-one So I just go out there and perform at the highest level. How much better are you right now then maybe last month before spring right? I mean I got way better just because I've transitioned a little bit to the inside Nicholas Fawcow I'm like now I actually turn like catch catch technique and it's often covers not
It's not always press at the line so it's like not maybe like move my feet move my hands like See like what I gotta do just like just a case I gotta go back in corner. I can I'm playing off now. I'm very confident out there Do you think that was a natural fifth view or have you had to kind of convince yourself to transition around? I mean I feel like it's natural for me because I feel like me Individually I'm a fast learner fast learner like coaches help us like learn fast And like because they're always honest about the techniques and stuff So you like you write down like you pick up all the things in like when we get out here They coached to like the techniques always you just go out there and play like fast spot And then you know, I would like reversit. So you're able to go out there and just compete Is that where you kind of stuff this spring or do you get kind of out there? So I really been stuck there this spring a little bit right Whenever you get it's like other things I just bounce out there every once in a while Just like have just have fun see if I still got it every once in a while So it's as good as go out there to compete at most spots You mentioned the technique what technique you know
tips and things that you had to pick up and learn from I mean it's always like you are because what coaches ask you hands like see it You see it move your feet and then hit your hand with your hands on the man So it's like when you be like are you out there? Are you able to like this process like the way the receiver comes off the ball looking at the hips and seeing like the way he Moving like you able to pick up like the row constant you can get out of that like so it's being like other coach walls for me Like as a player and just like him breaking out football to you like one-on-one It's like very beneficial I really say like the corner you got your cover two you cover three you cover one It's easy but you got nickel now so many responsibilities you gotta see like the row concepts You gotta be able to process like diagnosed rouse faster than what you gotta do in a corner and just be able to like everything Quit like your transition you gotta like you gotta move fast It's like game recognition
I'll definitely say I'll definitely say has because how you get to like college It's a little bit different high school. We don't got to worry about things like that when I when you get to like college in school I just like your recognition of plays and like you know your jobs the way like the coverage is supposed to be played Understand all your teammates or plus if you have a feel like it's easy It's very talented He's a great dude. He's a humble guy great teammate very supportive As I got that you know on the wrong because you like you can feed off your energy because you like You can see like we make a place. I like he like IGB It's like IGB 2.0 so he's like when you get out there with guys like that with good energy Make you play a little bit harder and then like when you make a place out there And I just help you like it's being out there with him. He's a good breaker player One of those guys questions and four kids Now what is it about one bill that gets ready to play at a high school?
It's a big question I know Let me just ask a couple of things because we have so many kids come out of Google and just play at games Lee like Schools and they like like tracks a big part of it because To actually and I believe everybody that I run a track like it's mandatory You don't really get a choice to be able to just like get out here and I know how to compete and then like G like game builds that mental toughness into you so like Have you like I hear now you got to be mentally tough because I mean Life's not going to be easy so it's like being out here You know we could pee when you down just pick yourself back up I mean that's a being is done for me that's a deal Did you how do you describe the mentality of the defense right now? It's opportunity for a great match for the world in yeah hungry and thankful I mean, we know how the last last time when you know we We had a chip on our shoulder. I mean we were riding high before that game and we took that loss And we came back had to make a couple changes But I think we understand what you know everything's that stick right now I mean, oh just fighting to where another house they jersey for the next game
That's what's on stake and just to be able to represent this this Stay in this this team. I mean we understand what's as what's on the line and you know We're just hungry and blessed that we get this opportunity to play in the Rose Bowl Right behind your Adam King WBN asked What do you remember most about walking off the field in Eugene? Just I mean there is a I don't think anybody imagined it imagine us losing You know I didn't That's for sure and I think after that it was a Kind of head deep Understanding that man we still there's still a lot of ball left to be played I mean you can let it sting for a little bit But you know if you let it carry over too long then you know there there goes there goes your whole Season by I think we did a great job of just Understanding coming together in this room right here Not being afraid to display or hold accountability for one another and you know as as that happened He came back regrouped and you know we just
Going right now and and I'm just blessed for those specific moments, you know losing I mean no one wants to lose but the the testimonies and the things are taught within those little situations speaks of all you I Yeah, I mean that's that's my boy. He's in the r2x club too, but You know Keata, I mean every time there's his numbers call he goes out there and makes the most of it No, no matter Where where we at in the game when he goes out there he's just hungry He wants to go make plays and and you know we see it in practice. So it's not surprising to us There were been a while this back Don't give us obviously very elusive in our talent and he's not very tall Um, how important it could be to just kind of stay in your Past rush lanes and neglect a lot of balls and kind of make a difference that way
Yeah, I think it just comes on being disciplined No one who you're playing against like you said done. He's a he sure but he's very elusive I mean he can he is making throws. I mean he get out the parking to everything So I think for us we just have to discipline and just continue to just Meet with coach Jay me with the coach knows and understand how we can just eliminate that About you and Jeff. I mean Your personality seem to be a little different you more on the quiet side. He's Yeah, how are we you've played together for years both five store guys kind of describe your relationship with him friendship with him Man, that's my brother like he said We're different but very alike Think outside on like you said he's louder. I'm quiet, but you know, once we're on that field are like the same person Where we'll do anything for this team, you know, we'll die for our players and we'll give everything we got Room together for four years correct. Yeah, fall camp Yeah, sometimes go over there. So over there
We have our share of days when we when I'm neat. He's neat or you know, we might both be messy, but we do a good job Yeah, I'd probably have a better kick in the jackdaw Tony Gertman like I help When you're playing a team for the second time and that was almost a season to go by now How much of Square one with with the scouting and preparation or how much do you take from that game? How much do you avoid taking so that you don't have any pre-heat notion to much of going up against them? On the offensive line. I say it's pretty 50-50. I mean That game like you said it was a while ago, but at the same time they elevated as a team so did we so we understand that they they had they made some changes for sure You know, there's teeth. There's a certain density we can take back from that game, but we also understand that They went on a little run after that and we can see that they elevated as an offense So we just got to continue to watch those games dissect the other games and just continue to see What stands out and what they change from the for the past game
We got a couple calls on on zoom that will wrap up with first. We have Nick Hamilton from nightcast media Just wanted to ask you basically about the synergy of this defense and how you guys were able to Not only celebrate the triumphs but get through the adversity be able to be this top notch defense that you are a college football today You Be the question one more time. Yeah, no problem I wanted to ask you about the synergy you are we're able to develop over course of the season Obviously celebrating the triumphs, but also getting through the adversities to where you go all other top notch defense that you all are today Yeah, I mean like you said that we went through a lot of trials to trials But there's also there's a lot of things we can take away from all the wins and losses And from those those wins we understood that hey, we can be the best defensive country and from those losses We understand that there's still Things that need to be fixed and I think when you take all that in at once
That comes out to the the common goal or the common talk, which is you can there's always learning points everywhere And depending how we dissect those games or how we just continue to come as one and elevate You know, we continue to just Collect all those those learning points and just continue to grow from them And one final question Joey Coffin Columbus dispatch Joey JT What if what have you guys done better and the Especially in the Tennessee game and just late in the season you think about turning some of the the pressures You've gone on quarterbacks in the sacks and getting a home in some of those situations Yeah, I think it was more just uh understanding the defense as a whole understanding everybody's job Thing as the season went on we had to understand that you know We have to know what's going on the back can we have to know what's going on the lineback recruit to understand What plays we have room of freedom and I think once we understood that and got a better understanding of the of everybody's job I mean it it showed this play because you know everybody knows we chose doing it's not like the lineback is no what they're doing
Uh the corners and be I they know only their job I think we all know each other's job and we continue to ask each other questions Um on you know, they're listening how they can get to the quarterback and you know if i'm dropping Playing quarterbacks by i can ask Cody on how to open field tackle So, you know, we just we just kind of lean on each other's understanding because uh, you know Like I said like Denzel knows that play corner better than I know how to play corner So you know, he has more more wisdom at that position than I do JT. Thank you very much Uh definitely a little bit of both Um, obviously I just wanted the team to win. I think we got a chance to win No, definitely towards it and then stretch that last drive Uh, I was a couple plays here a couple calls. They maybe should have gotten but um I think the frustration more so it just comes from no one's into the win or anything I was just saying he was a little surprised how much attention you got right away from your defense. How about you? Yeah, definitely. We maybe gill them more one-on-ones kind of how uh the game plan was set up
um Getting the guy you know different coverage out of cloud to my side and this is kind of how the game goes What's the process been? Where or whatever reason just just see that Yeah, definitely um, especially in college a lot of the game fans defensively were taking the away um You know, they had a lot of success at a outstay obviously with one of the boys having different um, the weapons and kind of still get the victories and um I was yeah, you continue to do better jobs when I hear My observation the process has been like post game Getting on the same page with Kyler Just against exchange Taxter you guys in this film. Yeah, yeah, filming them definitely um kind of asking what did I see there kind of go over and play and um I just how to get him when I saw and got a different feedback there Change words mark again, we're asking questions about the previous game bar You do type of guy to let a game like that winger or how do you flush it? You got to move on got him once a long season Got what 16 more of them. Hopefully no, I can stay healthy throughout the year and
Just continue to build and get better each week Okay, it's so much work throughout the offseason to get on the same page How different is it when you get into that regular season? Yeah, it's totally different. It's totally different Maybe do a lot of things now inserts and shorts and then you go out there put practice and get pads on You do like the point practice we get the colds, but there's nothing like actually going out there Not in live action and really trying to be on the same case I think that relationship will continue to develop Yeah, definitely definitely um Like I said, I was kind of my first live action together So continue with me when your early impressions You Yeah, but now obviously I have a death respect no jg's call or preseason and I was to be also really healthy That's kind of best the most important thing. I was thinking that well healthy even going for it. So Marvin, are you early impressions of the Rams? What do you think of the Rams? Yeah, I mean they're a good team. They're good physical team
I got a new lot of new guys upfront. I think that's kind of where they're strong suit is um kind of a little different to Buffalo come more to a little match coverage So I'm excited to go against it Wasn't many of them Wasn't many of them so Bethany I think I'm sure you think game versus just playing you know not get a preseason game action It's definitely definitely thinking a lot out there and um You know, I think I'll come with reps think the thinking less and just going out there and playing definitely come of reps And it's something you know, I'll get better at but Definitely I was thinking a lot up there Yeah, I mean you just got to team you get open for You know yourself making yourself available And when the ball does good way making the play This is taking you away that means other guys are having chance to get open That's not kind of how I look at it. It's no longer since you know offense
Hopefully sooner or later I think um, we'll continue to see we'll see I don't think we're in a bad place right now at all. Obviously. I don't really think that but uh Just a live reps will continue to grow and show Go on Living my whole life on the NFL team captain like specifically and I felt I wasn't a captain in high school Wasn't a captain in college But I'm gonna make a joke on high school. So yeah, I feel like I'm not gonna be a captain like it's that I felt You know But that would be awesome, you know, but you know happens up you great, but not either way I want to assume a grow as a captain from Perspective the guys on to be a visual word and get back to that point. Yeah, I mean I can't say that um
I mean, I guess the biggest thing is that I felt it has felt like how You used to move past, but it didn't take just the first LTAs and took Train and left and right once this season because I know what it was gonna be So a lot of reps Just to give back to feeling Like myself for day one LTAs And then that whole first week But now like today specifically just changing some small things with my feet that is it talking about the long coach Some things I'm doing my feet to get to that to sell my traditional angle that I love to sit on Thought even I thought I felt I thought I felt great already but I felt even better Sorry, the more excited tomorrow now I'm getting my feedback and how I like the right side and on the left side So I'm excited. I mean, obviously I feel like um In the league whether I left the right there's still going in premier guys obviously Your high expectations for the left angle and tackle
but um, it's definitely uh, like the A level of energy Definitely taking the human side because now connectable I guess that's the the tackle wall, you know, so So yeah, I would say in terms of communications far as this Outside of facility stuff like that like really creating that but tackle quarterback Bond even more off the field I think has been something that's Even the cool I got the text one day You know, yeah, I've been training both. I've been training both, you know, I asked after the season there like honestly You know, we'll talk you some things in and I just got a text on I have this with the free agency Then so I was like, you know what I have Oseason right tackle So if I get the word I'm going I'm staying right tackle I'll just do what I did before I'm built on that bus. I was like oh my I was always trying to left tackle now
As if we're gonna be left tackle And I'd rather do that than training on right time with the club. Hey Oh You know what I mean? So I'm like, let me just prepare an advance. I was like, yeah, it's got you know I think occasionally on third down there be a lot of twists Just know like it's on a magic And I think that was my mindset for like the first half of the season Like I didn't have to go into game with some pros like oh my gosh I did that I try to figure out okay This is this is the type of rush man again. This is how this guy usually rushes If I get the vibe this is how the ends like the rush you know tackles that first year guys you got to print your patch on Already, you know what it was gonna be already, you know The every stud and honestly just knowing that's kind of an advantage to so you're not you're not you're not oh The problems with my psych it was never airy Well to come up and I was like three plays in a row Two minutes I do that You know what I mean? I'm watching more everybody else ain't rarely you know it goes out
The third down I was like you know He's gonna pick me you know what I mean so Fact it's kind of it's also kind of an engine away. That's also exciting. Okay. I'm gonna get the hardest look you know those are real real reps I'm out of the kind of process That I was like hey when I tell me Let me know about I'm just gonna train it. I was training all left So TAs I guess if I didn't hear anything about TAs I came in like So you know what I mean Cuz just like I'm cool with training both continue. I would have been cool training both continually But I feel like anybody any position will be like okay You want as soon as possible settle in your hips settle in Hands so then We've been hard to get your work ball very healthy No
They're definitely but in terms of the development It's definitely faster Stay on one side, but I think having that the weeks that we had the transitional seasons over Like Trying to get up But when it comes back on the show in the house I've got a house not too far from So I told him I got the house like I could yell outside Have any stock or anything doesn't mean anything so We're we have to play on Friday and that's really all that matters We're gonna take two more from zoom before turning it back our first one's gonna come from Stephen from Cleveland.com Go ahead The fun I'm sorry Hey Caleb We've seen you were talking about the Ohio State Office the success that they've had
Obviously Jeremiah has been a big part of that. What's it been like this year going against him in practice and you know After doing that. There's a surprise at all to see him having a success. He's had as a freshman No, it doesn't bring surprises It was pretty pretty easy to see the talent that he has and the blessings that God has put on his plate But it's always a it's always a challenge going against Jeremiah and other receivers and Mecca and Carnival practice And even guys like Brandon and his impression Rogers. They they do a great job bringing looks for the defense and Create a lot of obstacles I'll find a question from zoom is gonna come from Dan Hope Go ahead Dan Caleb you Quinn had a lot of success against you guys when you played him at Alabama last year Just what do you remember from going up against him last year and what can you learn from that game? Really smart quarterback knows how to operate their offense Puzzle ball in the right places and then coast arkies and does a great job putting him in positions to win
All right back to you. Yep. Thank you Rob all our Columbus this batch Caleb JT and Jack land opposite sides are they is opposite off the field as they are on in terms of personality and The people they are They're offices, but they are also like One of the closest people I know they spend a lot of time together They've come from different sides of the country so they're different people for sure, but they're both Really great people are really great men. I'm sorry. I respect both of them Um I'm not gonna do that. I'm sorry More Throughout the season we would always see you on Wednesday nights you and late and would be some of the last people off the field For the things that you're working on after a practice Always the same is it a routine? What are the things that you're hoping to get out of those extra moments after practice?
Uh, so routine pretty much the the keys that we need to go into the game with and then also changes Week to week on based on what our jobs are gonna put us into doing um, so Every week we go through the same things and then we add certain things that we do for the week for the what the team that we play is gonna ask us a Bill we've been on this Oh, okay, Joey Gopman club is this bad killin Take this uses play action and they can use play action a fair bit What's what do they do? Well and those spots most They uh they do a really good job with iKandy And it creates a lot of challenges for defense in order to see if it's runner-path and see um Because that's when they're gonna take their shots to as well So really just having great eye discipline seeing the line is seeing what it's telling us um, so that's Miss what it does Hey, you guys had a pretty good game plan for child or war when you guys play them
You guys have another Texas has a good tight end and gunner. Um, what are you guys gonna have to do to limit him and how to What do you think about his game? He's a really good player he makes a lot of plays and he's Has a lot of receiving ours this year Um, so really just do the same thing we've done all year just Be disciplined in our responsibilities and if you're on them you gotta make a play when it comes Right, one of the mandra bill is Play them dot com when you know that their receivers is kind of a hole, you know, they spread ball around What stands out about you know the way that they can A lot of really good athletes. Um, I play with Isaiah Bond last year who's a really great receiver a lot of speed And then all their receivers have made a lot of plays so I mean everybody has to go on that peasy cues if we're gonna Stop them and um, have a do a really good job Front row here, Tim may let him grow Yeah, kill but you moved up here. I don't have to get to you when you move it basically a year ago
and stuff A little bit of a leap of faith because you know you know how Many athletes are on this team get athletes to stuff But why did you really feel this defense come into its own and then then pass that man watching in Rose Bowl You're recognition of what was coming seem to be on point did it feel like that? I mean you personally Um, I think the defenses played really well throughout the season I think we've had games where we played better and games where we haven't put it all together, but I think that's how all defenses are So I can't say there's a certain moment where I think we put it together um, but Was it second party question? You seem really on point Against Oregon about recognizing what was what was coming. I mean you were really active out there Directing and things like that did it feel like that? I guess I feel like As Luke said earlier the preparation that we put in goes into that and just feeling comfortable And what we're doing comfortable what we're seeing with the other teams. I feel like that's a
That allows us to play fast and Can Me and Lakers and to communicate to everybody else? Did I miss anyone's questions here? Steve how long in front of you? Yeah, Caleb, but you came to high state to play for national championship and there were a lot of ups and downs throughout the season Just to be in this position the last four teams still live just you feel validated by that and did you always have Faith that this is how it was gonna turn out. I came to high state to Become a better player and to help the team be as good as it can be not to When a national championship not like that wasn't the only goal for me coming here Really just wanted to be in the team and be my be with the brotherhood But it's a it's a great feeling being in the final four and being with the team and Everything that comes with that, but it's a blessing to be here And one final question, Boomer Ben what's the club is this bad? Yeah, I did want to call up when I talk to you At back of the game you said when they scored there first and second touchdown You were really hot on the sidelines. What was what was your message to the team and you know that's a good off
That they're gonna score against most people. Why were you so hot really just because we didn't execute which let them score so We've done that a lot which is something we can't do in these big games in these games where It's winter go home. So we got to make the plays when they come and Got our competitive excellence as coach Dases make the play where your numbers call Caleb thank you very much I feel like they're definitely picking up quick. I mean, I was in their shoes one time and I had Zach Harrison Javante Tyler Friedell in front of me So I'm just trying to be kind of one of those peers that they were for me and kind of just giving them the steps to get there And I feel like they're definitely picking up quick and they're definitely gonna be one of the great rushmen You Um, I feel like all the camps I've definitely gotten a big course learned and I love that side as coach J4
I love getting more reps because I just like protecting my craft So I mean some people may not need it some other people needed but I mean I mean for me it's always just kind of getting my little details perfectly like my steps my footing Kind of just perfecting my toolbox is what we call it my craft and trying to be a second whenever every place Yeah, um definitely just getting stronger faster everything all the above But uh one of my big things is being a leader and kind of just not trying to look still look up to Jack and JT Kind of have my own kind of leadership and be able to bring people into so I feel like kind of a lot of leaders on the D line at the B-in position so we kind of all kind of just count off which other kind of stuff
And it's competitive and we love it We all competitive people we all love to fish together And I feel like the spring and the best side of all is we feel like we're all just Kind of bouncing off each other and see what one person does and we kind of Better than the archival box and we all kind of just kind of build one great thing Hey, you ever unless you're in you got to get the shot of It's a approach you that I dare to coach Because you're a jacks r-r-clobby It gets test back So I definitely did it in high school. I was pulled back in a little bit tight And so I feel like it kind of saw what I could do there in coach Wilson honestly He left Washington to before he left and I feel like you playing that seed and coach Day's head and coach Day kind of just went for it and I tried to do the best I could to do it New playbook I did not know yet. I haven't got that far Um, I like to think myself as a football player. I can really play any position on the field you need me to
Just give me a weaker to to learn it and kind of perfect it and I'll try to do my best for you Graphically that's what He's talking to coach Johnson on Tuesday about sort of the conversations and sort of saw you and got out to have some conversations Actually JT and Jack decided to come back Just went into those and perspective and how did that help you really get the right mindset? Um, definitely kind of seeing it all the way through I feel like people kind of just see what happened and they don't know everything that goes into it How long the season is now what you got to do to prepare for and what to happen in all that time from here to to then So I feel like we definitely just coached day in me kind of connected Maybe kind of just talks man-to-man and uh Be kind of just straight to me and I feel like We kind of both are pushing on and we know we're making it yada Making each other better every day. We got the four best the ends five best the ends honestly in the College football and we're gonna be one of the best the lines and talks football I feel like a better player today than you were in this year
Well, I feel like I'm taking big steps in my roles of just being responsible and being more of a leader and uh kind of stepping up and taking a step to Kind of get out there more on the team and kind of bring people in and uh, I feel like We kind of helping out more But I mean the season goes by so fast already So I'm on your kind of like week 10 and you're like wow, it's already week 10 So now it's kind of give you more time to kind of enjoy it kind of save it because It's here once been on your cover the first First month of the year right? I mean there's a mindset Yeah, definitely definitely gonna have to have the mental stability to handle all those weeks and all those practices How much is Larry talking to you guys about like that Last question right here I mean he doesn't have to talk about it. We know about it. We've seen it every day
We watched the film we see him all working together. We know what it could be. We know we could become So we know we we're right at the same at the right place at the right time and god wanted us to be here And he knew we wanted us all to come together and kind of play together and be able to bounce off and Just perfect our craft together and I feel like we all are just great individuals and we come together at some discussion Doing it what what what the deliberations surprise is even a conversation like It's always be live. Let's tell you Tell you play football. So Obviously, there's a proximity to the season which is a little reckless. I understand that But in spring when you're competing for jobs. I mean if I'm a quarterback I'm messing be live so I can show him how I'm different than You know Anyone that can't be live, you know, I mean they're always trying to find an edge and if you're never fully alive I don't think you fully give guys opportunity to to be who they want to be or who they can be so That being said You know, I will cast my vote, but that will not be my final decision on that
But I will cast my vote the guys have handled it well It was good for all parties involved and more we can do that the better but I'm sure that is coming to a close here very quickly so Right Jeremiah off the field we saw after practice on the side of the day that the mob that came to Get autographs and things when When you're working with him on all these things you're talking about but also dealing with the life of being one of the biggest names in college football How do you help mentor him in that aspect? Yeah, I mean It's a blessing to be able to be in a position where you know can provide insight or I wouldn't say recommendations, but just you know give perspective What how he chooses to receive the first perspective or not one and I mean he always does, but which is fine But to be in that position is really humbling that being said He does a really good job on his own. He doesn't need checked on too much
Uh, he's really done a great job again the way he was raised and his morals and Humble would always sign and taking pictures I'm always trying to be the bad guy for him because he's not gonna be And just says again more about his character But he's not the only I mean he's not the only guy any guy would kind of do that we have a group full of awesome young guys But Jeremiah has done a great job with it hang on it and it's definitely growing at an exponential rate to say the least but Um, I think he's built for it and he's been handled at a high level But oh those around them were trying to help my little bit The first freshman to this is black type of shit. Uh Yeah, I mean That's a good question. I think that uh, you know Frankly, you know, I I don't know I'm not really fully evolved about that. So that can be but I wasn't you know, I think that People on the outside would be defense or even coach day or anybody brought it to my attention
You know, we're kind of just going about practice and that's our expectation and make plays not make mistakes Um, and he was starting to make a lot of a lot of plays consistently I think the consistent level that he's been as a person uh being on Being on time and doing what his job description on each play and the ball is coming your way and making some big plays and uh You know, it starts it starts being seen by your peers and your peers are asking for it They start barking getting a stripe off all those kind of things. That's the ultimate sign of respect. I think uh with your peers Um, you know go to your bat He's not going for his bat. No one know. People are bringing it to your position coach I think it uh speaks volumes of the uh the general respect that you're earning Through the process. So I think it's something like that happened and uh, you know, as well as there based on his peers and the other coaches Ryan Day was talking about how impressed he's been this spring with Austin Sareville all that he's been able to do and Tyler Boom was talking last week about the importance of the cross-training and all that that goes into that
How much have you seen Austin benefit from this spring and everywhere that he's been and how big of a piece You think he's going to be regardless of where he fits on this offensive line. Yeah, I think Austin's been awesome I mean he literally you know what was they say he played every spade every position We just move around you know and handles it and you know He's one of those guys. I feel like you watch film over and over again the day after day His name never really gets brought up, you know, in a good way like you know the old line your name gets brought up when Uh, usually not going as well, you know, I mean, they're literally at the point of the attack on every single play So there's nowhere to hide and so But Austin when his name is brought up is like man, that was a good job. Right good job pass off that combo Whatever it's it's always positive and uh, been really impressed with him you start in the winter Take a great job through the winter Again continue to build their respect for his peers And then he's gonna good job really good job just being very consistent through spring Since you've been working more with the whole offense
I'm gonna come support back play What has grown in your I don't know appreciation of that position and what those guys have to do and go through What do you think more about those guys versus maybe what you thought before? It's just a wide receiver guy Yeah, I mean I mean, there's no just a wide receiver guy. If you are just wide receiver guy But you know, you won't be a very later on It's all about it's all about quarterback play, you know, so I think in that same world though to the point is that You know, in order to be a great receiver or a great receiver or You know receiver guy whatever you want to call it There's only one page is the quarterbacks page so everything is based off them there Whether it be their progression their timing the stresses they have is what we're trying to minimize so If you don't fully understand the quarterback play it's hard to you know maximize receiver play. I think you know That being said um, yeah, I mean, I'm still always learning, you know, I think that I can't say anything's jumped out massively right now but I would say that
You know, I guess I would say that the preparation level. I mean the what is required to execute and play at a high level It's just not capable in the a lot of time, right? I mean, there's only so much time where I'll be with players If you're not willing to spend you know your own time getting prepared for practice to be To maximize one's ability There's a good chance you're not going to maximize your ability. So you know other positions I mean, all lines same thing. I mean receiver play sometimes can can you know get away from it We do a great job studying and being in the room extra for sure But the requirement of a quarterback to know the fixed protections The BR run game coordinator based on the calls, you know to give us a different checks. I mean, there's so much to need to know and frankly The you know the old lines only as good as the quarterback the receiver's only as good as the quarterback They're often silly as good as the quarterback and it's our responsibility to put guys in position To maximize with their capable of maximizing But their inability to notice that they need to spend extra time outside the a lot of time
I think it's critical and the amount that it takes I guess that was maybe a little naive too But the guys are doing a great job doing it The mount up. You got a banner out there national champs. I think you keep these guys grounded Being in the moment looking ahead not back Are you tougher on them because no, I think that I mean I I think we have a lot of guys You know what? I think it's understanding that we were trying to build the map to get to where you wanted to get to But now that we have the map Doesn't mean we've traveled the path so Like we know what it looks like the guys that are here know what it's supposed to look like the guys before us Say unbelievable example how to get to where you want to get to So the focus is on trying to replicate what they just did and how they operated Can't say we've done that right now. So it's very easy to stay motivating because they already know it's not good enough frankly
And so the last thing they want to do is put in a ton of effort and then not reach their goals. So Motivation I don't think is needed. I think there is a catching up of those and maybe aren't quite sure what it takes you know and but overall Motivation is not what we've needed clarity of message is definitely what we've been focused on and I think the message is being received so Not concerned about you know motivation and and the Looking back if you will I think everyone's pretty pretty focused on being forward and known we haven't accomplished anything So Who would you say is the leader of your water secret room right now? I would say Cornell Tate Brennan inness probably done the most Most outspoken you know in the room Yeah, I would say they're doing a good job those are probably the two guys that would jump out my room. Yep I mean, Brennan he's been a total obviously Car now taking on that role
More and being more vocal is the football core office in this thing is the only difference That process for heaven becoming a more vocal leader took to say that on him What's the question? Car now like what do you think like the growth of it? Yeah, I mean he's I think he's pulled guys aside, you know, it had one-on-one conversations with him He's locked in You know, just I think he saw the impact that I'm eccomade and the role he played and to think that we're gonna lose that And then be a better group probably doesn't mathematically make sense to him So someone's got to sit up in that role and one and on respect some two He knows he's capable of it And it's just the desire and the appreciation. I think to be at the order table now I'm the older head and and appreciate the way I met him probably went about his business And so he probably valued that appreciated that And he's just being assured we still have that Could you assess the running back room? I think it's pretty much assumed both is running back to CJ and and
A James think that's hand in system is probably the way you got to go again How do you think it's working and you see third and maybe fourth guys? Up in the mirror. I think that you know college football We're in a football any football really you got to have depth in running back room. I think that Very apparent in the NFL. It's usually a two-back system You know very very rarely is it one guy But in college I think we saw the benefit of that last year The ability to compliment each other is really important And the ability for us to identify what they do great and put them in good positions to be what they are What they're best at I should say is really important as a coaching staff It's been very impressed with Even the younger guys Sam and And bow and the way they've come along Consistencies so what you're chasing right you're always able to that's why you're here But how often you do it ultimately dictates how much you play So but overall I think locks been on them. They don't understand the standard and in past pro and Not being a guy we got to sell them out because you can't pass protect so
We were blessed what especially with tray last year and and quenchon so But no these guys have done a good job. They're competing. They've been very coachable You know, it's it's shown a blog on film But yeah, I mean it's always hard on backs. I mean every opportunity you get to go live and and break tackles really Gives you the most feedback on what these guys are capable of you just playing tag out there You never get any art at least you shouldn't But the running backs You know on contact days have done a good job James has done a really good job growing really excited about him Everyone's really excited about him and CJ so You know, I think ultimately now group the uh, how will I'll go with the group beat is probably based on you know The Top the bottom rising right and you're gonna have some guys at the top but you know, where's the floor and so I think Bow and Sam has done a really good job and many some more guys to get healthy and more guys on campus, but very encouraged
And you saw him improve and then McLean I think is a is a great plus. I mean he is a guy that has Football intelligence. He's picked it up You know, he's kind of Of those incoming freshmen who still should be in high school He's a guy. I think you're gonna point to and you can see right now. He's gonna be a player Over to the right Austin Ward the podcast A healthy Mitchell Melton. How does he fit in for your defense? What does he bring to it? Yeah, he's You know Mitch is that combination player, you know, and um In our four down You know, he's a guy that can do a lot of things Drop fold in there and make plays you see some of that all the time really athletic um, you know We're kind of loaded at that end position. So He's gonna play there, but you know like I said last year and we We haven't needed it, but he's a guy you would point to along with C. J. Hicks
You know for the for the long season Um, people get injured you get a little light inside. It's always hard on the defensive tackles But if you're gonna play with three ends You know that's Mitch is a guy who definitely can do all that he has that Over to the left Joey Kaufman Columbus dispatch Jim you've talked about this before But I think in pastures where you're going up against a really talented receiver group offense to encourage your players It's not okay if they give up to the play and to go nearly almost the first half Today where you the offense didn't get him the end zone till the late in the second half just And you guys have guys down the second area just what what did you think of of that sort of trend and how it's evolved in the way you guys almost Should amount of the first time yeah, I think it's become um You know an expectation now um, you know our DB's You know our BIA best in America we Led the country and past defense right I think uh It was 96 what I uh what I got here and it was number one last year. So
They've they've taken that spirit. So it's a competitive spirit. It's an expectation now It doesn't matter who we're going against. It's it's they view it as a standard So that was good to see in the first first half Over to the right Spencer Holbrook, Letterman roll Jim we've talked about safety changing the way that you play defense and the Leo and the linebackers But how much does having the depth that you guys have a defensive tackle change the way that you can do things defensively? Yeah, I mean You're gonna play to your strengths You know and uh that's that's my job is to what do we have and what do we do best and When you have defensive tackles um, but I've said it before and it helped our defense so much last year When you have defensive tackles that actually make tackles Which is what we have right now It changes the way you call a game You know, it certainly helps you be um In better shape on explosive plays on the back end you don't have to do a whole lot to help those guys out because they're making tackles
So you got to go you got to go with that, you know, you got to let those guys play and and and they're good so You can't get too far away from the scheme of having those defensive tackles make place because they're doing it and it works Over to the left Tony Gurdman Buckeye Huddle Jim Ryan talked about the quarterback run being more of a Thing with the offense here during the season. How much of when you're facing a team like that? How much does that impact your day-to-day throughout the week preparing for that? Yeah, it's a ton, you know, it I think it changes everything you do on defense You see it everywhere from the NFL on down if you have a quarterback who can make plays with his feet Your scheme better be designed that you know to to take that away into account for it So it changes the way you look at everything when you're game planning Thank you, Donovan over here to the right Tim May to the Tim May podcast When I asked Ryan about just for example Calvin Simpson hunt, but the Corner singing to be playing almost with the chip owner shoulder to a certain extent
I mean Davis and Nick Benoson took today personally it looked like you know to me because uh some of the hype going into the Game but then what what do you see from that group in particular that? Buies you going into this off season Yeah, when you can when you have corners that you can count on Again, it's just like having defensive tackles In the run game when you have corners you can count on that are going to compete all the time no matter what the situation is And we've developed that again that changes the way you call the entire game. I mean you you're able to leave those guys on an island You're able to switch out converges And they know what they're doing and they take great pride in it. So Having those guys out there in the development. It's a big deal. It really is Yeah, I mean he's He did come in late and you know He's one of those guys that just competes every day doesn't say much
You know he's trying to live up to the standard or the other guys And you you see him coming along, you know, you see him step by step coming along and and you know put him in a You know competitive atmosphere seeing him step up. That's a great sign and final question for coach Noel's Dan Hope 11 warriors You mentioned CJ Hicks a few minutes ago. Have you seen him take the strides? You need to see the spring to trust him as a guy who could be a potential starter on his defense Yes, I mean uh I think CJ has shown that He has talent and I think it's my job to put him in the best situations for him because he can be a force You know he's much better when he's bloodsing or he's directed because he's able to use his athletic ability But he has certainly shown that he's going to be able to help this defense coach. Thank you very much for your time I see All right, and we will bring offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach chip Kelly to the podium now
We'll open up the questions over to the left bill Rebinovitz Columbus dispatch. That's it What are your just general impressions of the offense coming out of spring especially quarterback We'll look at all 15 so I think you know This day is is a big part of it, you know because it was the first time they were got to play some of those guys They were got to play in from the crowd And that was an amazing crowd you need to 80,000 for spring game Now you could see some of the young guys kind of looking around like wow. This is different in the indoor But that's what they have to get ready to play it so um We got better from practice one practice 15 You know, it's still in evaluation through the whole process, but It's not something in the players bill to the will we're not making a decision walking off the field today Saying hey, this is the direction that we're going in will will be very authentic and and look through everything and make sure that we get a really good Feel for what it all looks like and then who will best move this offense. That's that's what our decision is I do I think we got a lot of guys there um that part's tough
I think because you got you there's guys that deserve reps You know, and they're all competing for it. So you know sometimes you'd like to be sometimes when you had a guy who's an initial starter Well, he's gonna get the bulk of the reps. He got him better, but Um, they capitalize on it. We really rolled them, you know, if you were at some of our screen praxis You're watching all those guys rotate in rotate out Um, and as we talk about all the time, you know, the old adges is don't count your reps make your reps count You know, and we'll put it all together and really come up with you know, which guy do we really feel is gonna make gonna help us move this offensively Over to the far right bill landis the podcast Kings of the North Hey chip um you some of me first talked you that the the basis of a lot of your success running the football Just kind of figuring out what your guys do best and then leading into that over 15 practices now How good of a field do you think you have for that and then what are the next few months look like as you try to piece that all together? Really good question um It's It's interesting because the one thing that I think Sometimes makes tough and an evaluation is what a good front we want to get Um, you know, so for 15 practices
Those guys on the other side of the ball were pain, you know Jack and JT and tylie can those guys, but I know come fall there's not gonna be anybody more happy that we have those guys in the defense side of the ball Because of what they can do so I still think we'll have to really evaluate that what we're good at what we're not what we got to get better on what we got to work on But I think the work we got against such a quality defense was Was really key for us over to the far left Nathan baird cleveland dot com so you were go at this time Came out of the spring with still a lot of question marks about the offensive line And even I guess that last season came out with question marks What have you seen that progress in the time that you've been here and what's your confidence level that that offensive line is gonna allow this offense to do Everything it wants to do this fall. Yeah, I mean, I've been here Short amount of time so I didn't know I really don't have anything to compare to so I kind of Tabula rassa come in with a blank slate and just observe it. I think we're really athletic I think donny and In Seth and those guys inside are really smart and really intelligent They allow you to to be able to make adjustments in game
Just tucking football with some of those guys. It's like well These guys are wired the right way and a lot of those guys have played a lot of football so They can bank on their experience there. You know, I think we We've got about four guys that have played significant amount of snaps and we got to make sure we can find out who the fifth guy is Um, but that's similar to where the quarterback spot is I think and I also think of the offensive line You're not gonna play a 16-17 game season and just play with five guys. You know, you really have to develop your depth there There's gonna be a number two center that's gonna play a lot of football It's gonna be a number two guard whether it's on either side of the ball There's gonna be a third tackle. I think you you're gonna get tested especially with this new in this new playoff format You really have to think that way. So you know, you're not looking for five starters You're really looking for ten starters because you're gonna have to you're gonna have to probably play ten guys to get when you get through a 16-17 game season Over to the right Austin Ward the podcast chip. I think it was the first play of the game the T formation and then the reverse center Spin move with Will Howard under what's the inspiration for that package and that sort of uh, rinco with the quarterback mr. Hayes
Do you have uh There's a looming figure around this whole program. You know, we get to go to work every day and the Woody Hay's athletic center So um, it was good enough for Woody. We're gonna stay with we're gonna do it We ran some last year. I think we took 21 snaps at UCLA and T Been a short yardage formation for us and we've done some different things with it, but um Also, I think our players had a lot of fun, you know, practicing that and doing some different things so It's a small part of our offense, you know, we will not be in the T 21 times in one game, but you know, we may get it in some short yardage situations And I think it's come back. There's a lot of schools right now that Um are starting to do that. You know, it's really just you're trying to you know, you got a half a yard to get You know, you're trying to get your big guys in the game and I think we use three tight ends and and two running backs in our formation today with Packard being the the full back in that situation. So um, there's a lot of different things you can do in short yardage, but um A little bit of a tribute to coach coach Hayes and and then what he means in this program Joey Kaufman Columbus dispatch over to the left chip. Did you look back now? You've been here two months 15 spring practices
There's something you feel best about what you've been able to accomplish with this offense Well, I haven't accomplished anything because I didn't take a snap but um I think the most impressive thing since I've been here is how close close this football team is You know some programs talk about the brotherhood. This is really brotherhood Um, our practices as we talked about how good our defense is it's they're highly competitive, but they're not combative and those guys Really work very very well together both the old line in the D line the secondary and the receivers The competition is the but it's got to be the best there is in the country You know and that makes you better But I think sometimes competition, you know guys can lash out and it gets really combative and then all of a sudden the fight breaks out And we're trying to accomplish and get footballed them But I think the way these guys cooperating work together as a group Uh as a special bond and I think you're you're gonna need the the the closest team and the most connected teams on the ones that win Uh over to the right here Andy Baxter and letterman or all chip obviously There's been a lot of talk about Jeremiah, but a mecca is the big return this group. He kind of reminded everyone what he can do Today, what's it been like working with him and what kind of weapon can he be for you guys?
Good point and a mecca has reminded me and the other 14 practice sessions of what he can do Special player, you know and and J. J. is a really talented player also But you know, I think I think all of the the whole group A carnal tape did some really good things watching him this spring and for all of them You know, I mentioned it with the offensive line. I I came in with the blank slate You know, I had no opinions formed Not that really just why I didn't just observe them, but you know that I think that way to receive them Is really special and I think there's a bunch of guys in there and again when you have to play multiple Multiple games after the regular season is over You're gonna make sure you're gonna need depth like that and in the fact that it's you feel a little bit Comfortable right now that we got some guys there that can make some plays on the perimeter And that really dictates how people are gonna defend you know, so You got a couple really good running back, you know So are they gonna load the box? Are you really gonna load the box and leave those guys in one on coverage? Well then it's the quarterback's responsibility to decipher that and get the ball of those guys So or do they at least a double coverage a list of double coverage and now it's a little bit lighter box and you can run the ball so
Having too many weapons is a good problem to have Second roll left pat Murphy 24-7 sports chip we've talked a lot about kind of the quarterbacks maybe vying for the the starting spot But some of the younger guys what have you seen from them? We got an opportunity to see more of them today Then we probably have what what's your assessment of them as they kind of get in this I I always am so impressed with Young guys that enroll early in watching how they get acclimated and what they do, you know And you look at Julian and air and and JJ, you know They should be in the hot lunch line of their high school and they're out here playing in front of 80,000 people and They've really progressed when you watch them in meetings and listen to them and they interpret, you know, so Basically the whole concept is we throw them in the deep end and see if they can swim, you know This we didn't baby anything we don't put the install in with hey you guys are in stop. We're an install this with the older players And then you guys you know go sit at the kitty table and we're just gonna do the really simple things with you
You know where they get it all and and the more they can digest the more when you're in a room when when you're checking for Understanding and asking questions and they can spit back to you the more confidence you have when they get in there with the plays that you can call for them So Those guys have been in process. They're still learning, you know, they were the The guys today that were kind of looking around and saying, well, there's like 80,000 people here Along with the offensive coordinator in the quarterback coach because I was kind of looking around because I'd actually never been in the stadium until yesterday when we had Um our 14th practice in there. So I played Ohio State once when I was at Oregon, but that was in the Rose Bulls I'd never been actually in the stadium until yesterday So I caught myself and I went into the stadium today looking around saying 80,000 for spring game. That's impressive Got time for just a few more folks over here till the right Dylan Davis Delaware Gazette Given what you just said about throwing them into the deep end what stood out the most about Julian's progression through 15 practices and where he is as you guys head out of spring Julian is a very fast processor
You know, he he really thinks very very quickly on his feet like he He makes really quick decisions. He doesn't stick on in read he can progress and any ceasing is really well for For a young player, you know, and not having been exposed to a lot of college defenses and especially what Jim does You know Jim Jim can make Jim can make a young freshman quarterback Cry with some of the stuff he does, but you know, I never saw that with Jules and I That's been in press of his his ability to retain and You know him and JJ the compliment I would say them is if you got here and you didn't know what class they were and you wouldn't say that those guys Refreshman in terms of how they've picked things up and and you know sometimes freshmen act like freshmen But the guys who are special they don't act like freshmen, you know, they act like their football players And those are two guys that are are examples of that far left camera and T. Gromitz and the athletic chip On the topic of freshmen James peoples and Sam got on the second half You talk about how deep you need to be in this era of college football, but
As you search for our B3 what did you see from them today and what is what has their growth been like in this spring? Yeah, James really flashed early for for me not knowing again kind of it's just Don't worry about what the background is where they're from who they are The this guy of this stars. That's guy of that stars. It's they're all bakis and there's how they do and I think James is got really good Field and vision he can hit things My thoughts and it's really good things today TC is another guy who really came along during the spring and in work constantly talking in Our staff meetings about depth were very cognizant of the fact that the playoff situation has changed So you have to develop that depth, you know Used to be maybe have a pair and a spare was what everybody says, but I think you may have to have more than that You know, you're talking about 16-17 games You're you're really gonna be tested that way so I was really happy with with how those young guys have come along You're in the 15 training sessions that we've had. Oh here to the right. Tim made the Tim May podcast Thank you, Jerry. You have your own podcast. Yeah, yeah, like these guys all had like a name next to their
You must have some juice if you got you got your name in your podcast definitely I like it. It's not just the lunch last hot lunch last one. It's a hot lunch line Just too quick. He's number one. Do you feel compelled Delicates quarterbacks? No where they stand here. You know, it's coming up Tuesday, you know, to me there Yeah, you know, where does that go? I mean in your mind. Yeah, we're all sit down as a staff and visit meet on it and then nine Maybe he does an unbelievable job of I think all our players understand where they fit and what what the picture is and we'll give them our assessment This isn't you know, we're not gonna come back and but we do it after every day They know where they stood after practice one after two after three after four We grade everything they're getting constant feedback in terms of where we are and then after 15 which we had today But but we can't do it unless you watch the film and can can really look at the The things because you may see something but you're on the sideline You know, why did he make that decision? Well, I couldn't really see the field safety from where he was Okay, now I understand why you made that decision. So
You know, what what what the well meetings with all our players and that's that's always been the method So this week during um, you know between Monday through Friday we're all scheduled no one's going on the road to recruiting until after that But we're all a player meeting said every position You know offensive line defensive line linebacker safety is everybody everybody's gonna sit down with their position coaches Know where they fit and we see them Do you feel a pressure with with the transfer portal looming? I mean you've been ahead coach for a long time I mean, is that on your mind at Tuesday? Yeah, I think I'll do what you gotta wear of it I'm 100% and I don't think it's pressure Um, but I think you just open lines of communication and everybody knows You know which What your evaluation was through the training sessions that we have guys we gotta have we got real quick Last two questions Dan Hope and then Rob all are Feel like you need to have a starting quarterback named by and whatever biggest things you're gonna be looking for between now and then in determining who that guy's gonna be Well between now and and whatever then is we're not allowed as coaches to go back out
And practice with him, you know in college football you get 15 training sessions in the uh In the offseason and then they'll go back to working with Mick in the in the weight room and getting bigger getting faster getting stronger They'll have organized activities themselves Um, and they they do a really good job of that Um, but once there's a football out like we're not allowed to be there to evaluate and even assess So they're really from a football standpoint on their own until August so um You always want to do it earlier But I also believe every time I've I've been involved in this is that it kind of happens organically and authentically You know because the players know If you say we decided we're gonna be with Joe and they all think it's Tim You know they know they're in the locker room with him every day players players understand, you know who they'd feel is the guy and and most of the time it it The decision is very obvious, you know, and you just say this is where we are with it, you know Um, but There's that timetable thing. I don't I don't I can't give you an exact timetable in that so Rob
Chip um you talk about Julian, but typically in your experience you've done again like Tim said a long time Long does it take for the game to slow down for for a young QB? I think it depends on the individual, you know, I've had some kids Um Where early, you know, you're like wow Marcus Murray, oh, it was like that Remember vividly second practice and he got to the fifth reading the progression and threw it out here in his big game And I asked him why I do it all I asked why cuz I just want to understand it and I said why did you do that? And he goes I don't know what we call that defense, but there was like a lot of guys over there And they didn't seem like there was anybody over there But for him to process at that time he was right And he came back the other day whether that was cover 60 other day coach like I learned what you guys call the coverages But um it all happens differently. I've got guys that for two years seem like They're just you know They're really struggling and then the light bulb goes off and you know, whoa like they got it so Everybody has different learning styles
You know our job and the evaluation process is to identify those learning styles So you know they cognitive learn they an auditory learner, you know, do they do they learn by field is it is it more? You know a Field guy, you know a more film guy, you know, it's all different And I think we have to keep poking and prodding and in in in for us as coaches that's the challenge too is what is their best learning style and how can we convey it because education basically is just a transportation knowledge But it really doesn't matter what I know or what Ryan knows it matters what they know so That's that's always kind of What we're working on and studying and thinking about and kind of where we are and how much can they handle and then how much is too much You know because this may be a great play. I agree 100% but if you don't feel it's a good play Then then why is it in you know I mean and that's that's this whole feeling up process that we're all they're learning awesome. We're learning them This is have identities sort of coaches really Running quarterbacks. Is that something you've always sort of lean toward or is it year by year case by case
What advantages do you like about because all your guys can run a little bit Yeah, I think a running quarterback causes problems for defense So when when plays break down the unscheduled plays You know if you just go back to the recent Super Bowl on that last drive the two big plays were my home's run But patch from home is another runner Andy's not calling design quarterback runs for Pat But when the defense matches up and plays two men and turns their back to the quarterback Well, maybe the best decision is to take off you know the second one he took out. I'm like he may score You know a lot of guys go and they want a hook side You know and and there's times where you have to understand if you do have a running quarterback If we talk about the best of the best ability is availability You know you're not low on your shoulder and taking people on but we are always looking for quarterbacks that have the ability to run We're not looking for running backs that can throw you know, so you're not gonna see us 20 times a game we're running the quarterback There are people that run offensive styles and are really successful with it
But with this group we have right now that's not now they can hurt you with the feet We'll did it when he was at case date, you know Obviously Devon took off a couple times today air took off a couple times today Lincoln's a really really good athlete Julian can run but you know we're not calling design quarterback runs You know you're not gonna see You know I tremendous respect for coach Hayes and the legacy that he left here This straight T is about as far as we go. We are not going single wing So we are not gonna snap and run quarterback ISO and quarterback power. So But it is a it's another weapon You know and if it also keeps defenses honest, you know if your defensive and is gonna continue to bend From the quarterback pulls it he's on the edge and he's gaining first downs Within the defensive and has to stay outside and contain the quarterback Well then we can run the ball up and hand the ball off sometimes in our running game our quarterback really is a blocker He's responsible for a defender if the defender is cheating and fitting it on the run Then his responsibility is to make make the defense be honest and and that's really air did that a couple times today And we had a block that safety was sticking its face in there
So we took off around the edge what happens in next play the defense is wider Then what do we get to do? We get a chance to hand the ball off to the running man Great coach. Thank you so much for your time and thank you for being a buck. I Thanks. It was definitely addressed here You know this pretty easy. I think Austin Sarah. They'll stepped up in a big way. You know with the thought of being out Um and and then you know, you know, Carson can can play board guard and center, which is good Um, and you know, we've actually you know Sen has done a nice job as well Um, but it was good to see Austin you know, he moved from guard attack a couple times and even with the ones he was in their battling his tail off So um, I think we have built some depth there, but again, you know, we got to go play some games and see where You know again, whether it's whatever happened last year's last year, but I know that the message to our To our offensive line as we want to play one of the hardest playing in the offensive line of the country No, we got to play with technique But at the end of the play like knock the line of scrimmage back and play with your hair on fire as hard as you possibly can
There's a lot that goes with the playing in the offensive line. It's all the communication There's a lot of things that have to get into place. I think chef has done a nice job of communicating And it's getting the offense better now and takes control up front and brings everybody together Which is great, but but to me like that's it now we could list a bunch of other things But to me we've got to move the line of scrimmage We've got to be just playing with our hair on fire and knocking people back and playing physical Um, and that's the start to game. That's the end No, no, I don't see it that way at all. I think um You know, we'll see what we got this year, but I feel like you know, we've got some really good young players in the system I think that um, you know, we should have the best offensive line in the country. That's that's the standard here Has been for a long time and um, you know, and so you know, we'll keep pushing towards that this year and You know, I think you know, everybody in that room and play the same thing Um, Tony Erwin
I was the situation the little linebacker Yep, so uh, Sonny has really stepped up and played well. He's made this transition from safety to linebacker uh, very well I think he did a nice job in the spring, but you could definitely see as he went into the the summer of just you know, bigger, stronger Uh, being more comfortable closer to line of scrimmage It's different when you're closer to line of scrimmage Uh, he's doing a better job getting his you know hands on on You know on offense alignment and getting off of blocks. He's in a better job doing a better job with his hands I think he understands the communication The linebackers always have to be involved at the front make them involved and fit it to the back end. He's doing that Um, you know, I think he sees you know looking forward to play Uh, playing in a game and you know, get an idea of what it all looks like But I can tell you in practice. He's playing fast. He's playing violent and I think he's you know He does a nice job of taking the meeting in the field being very intentional about his work, but playing really hard
Yeah, I haven't talked to Jim because you know, we'll make that final decision here over the weekend Uh, he's certainly leader in the club bus Can you tell Ryan? I mean Seth McLaughlin can tell he's been there done that is he as he projected that To the offensive line here still and I'm saying for leadership stand going a grown man Yes, how does that just come up? How does it show up? Uh, a bunch of ways it just poise it's Not getting rattled when you know coach parks at you. It's you know, okay. I got this let me get it under control It's Seem something in practice and being able to adjust on the move. It's Being prepared when you walk on the field It's Recognizing how hard you have to play at the position. It's You know kind of all of those things in the one, but He's got great communication up front. He talks to the guys He's moving quickly in there and when you have experience like he has, you know, the game seems to slow down at times yet You know, he seems to be playing it up at fast level
I think it's over Hey, there was a point where you got a black stripe off and I feel like you took a step in the right direction When you come in in the summer it is very difficult to get on the field especially early in the season Whether he does or not. I will see But if he continues to practice for it, he's been practicing and he'll give himself a chance to be in the rotation Maybe we'll shoot the season Or later in the season which is similar to some of the water series we've had before you know, you've seen Some of those guys get some reps early in the season that they make an impact later in the season I think that's probably more His path right now, you know, shows up and starts doing great and you know, well You know, we'll give him the reps he deserves Or like Jeremiah is in a different situation because he came in here during the war and he was a little bit ahead
Anybody who comes in and January to me. I don't look at them as a freshman anymore They've been here there in the program and we expect them to continue You Still in there right there Talking and communicating but In the skirmishes we've had it's you know, it's been offense for his defense So I've mostly been in the offensive side still kind of going through all those types of things And there's a lot to work through this year just with you know the play talk and then It's going to mean that is you know the close to my communication inside of 15 goes off Just there's a lot of things that go on there. We don't really get notification on that So I'm trying to you know just help trip with that and some communication that we're a person out
But I'm very much involved with special teams. I think it's a two-minute warning There's some strategic things that are gonna go on again the half and the game that you know, you're really being involved with But to your point just overall just looking guys in the eye making sure that you know They have to right looking their eye to you know that you know they they understand Um, you know with the situation what's going on in the game, you know Like that happens sometimes the young players, you know, they're just like playing the next play You know, like that's not just how that's not how it works. We'll get to win the situations and so you know all those things will come into play and make it in game adjustments You know be involved with all three phases, you know watching you know the game of the table to try to identify what happened the last series I think all those things will be happening Right now Nick is gonna be the starter And you know that that competition will go into next week, but Right now as we head into the weekend he is the starter And the plan is ready to be the first part of what we do
Saturday against actor He's got a strong leg. He's made it a good transition into The country but also just playing you know football And and not Australia was football, which is very very different um The um you know snap to kick is really improved, you know that was one thing as it is a taller guy So the ball has to get out of this you know get out this kick faster. I think he's done that His time time has been good And he's been more consistent You'll see you know he'll hit a few that'll just go right out of the stadium And then he just got a strong strong leg So we're looking for that consistency. He's he's shown that here most recently So he's got the upper hand right now I don't know if it's because will maybe took a little bit longer to make a decision then December of them some of the other top of the line quarterback Or because maybe there was a thought he wasn't going to be the starter It can't be stayed too short But it seems like people have been kind of as a game manager type of quarterback
After eight months with them You see his ceiling of what what is will special flight to you and where do you see them taking? I see A bunch of trades there. I think the first trade a size It can stand in the pocket and he's strong You know, so I mean that's the first thing to notice about him Again, whether it's standing in the pocket with poise. I think that's another trade that he has that's excellent He he feels a rush But he stands right in there. I think the next trade is just you know, he's just top-end speed And he can run 22 miles an hour at that size which There's not a lot of guys who can do that So I think that's the extraordinary trade and now I would say his overall leadership Command in the huddle is is another You know something that he's he's really you know grown into in the last few months and he's been here And then his accuracy is been very accurate since he's been here And when he knows what's going on and he can't just spell what's happening
I mean it looks right just feel and and he can hurt you you know a bunch of different ways so His ceiling that that's that's gonna be kind of you know up to how he plays his season but You know, I see a player who has a lot of great skills that you know translates well to the next level So no, we'll see but I know his first focus is on winning games around here Oh Please mean you have nerves naturally the answer first complaint. I was good. I was rolling Yeah You Yeah, it's like I prepared well And camp and practice all week and I was I was ready Um, yeah, I have two multi-year starters
It did a lot. I mean I couldn't ask them. Hey, what we got here, but I was prepared well. I mean I was telling Jimmy and says like a player Probably emotional excited. It wasn't just as a guy from Ohio. What does it mean to start it? Um, it was always my dream to come here and play and start and Having that like me I just like keep going keep building those days and those games and keep building What a much younger Austin No, not I don't think Even I told like me I asked my younger self Even committed here. I wouldn't believe that now having a couple of starts. Yeah awesome has this happened Faster than you No, I knew that year two. I was gonna see you some playing time Now starting week one year two. I didn't see that but like I was ready
Didn't spring ball like a new I was gonna I was gonna play some soft but so what does it mean to you to it's not only get the opportunities to play but Like you play well enough now Trust you I guess it shows like my preparation my hard work and just everything I put into this and I just finally show up on field The ones Yeah, uh, the definitely was in training camp I mean black and highly can tie every day Like it feels you feels a lot of confidence and doing it well and not like getting Ball or anything Hero in Jason Moore and Taiwan all those guys me pretty much anyone on the deepened line And came back as well. So yeah
He Help me a lot and I'm proud that he's our starting center not someone else's but um Mean he's like the captain of the line. He's another voice on the line With guys like Josh Fryer and Josh Simmons dining and Tiger that means another voice and another captain Look ways of having the and I'm with this much experience Man like he can tell you like before to play what's going on and like how to block someone like we need to do and like That's a lot It makes us more calm like especially me and pay as a first star. So like we were up here What what set like he brought us down mean we were like fine like our emotions weren't high we were settling Is that like something he tells you? Is that something you pick up on by how he's acting?
How do you kind of sense what he's trying to say about how he's acting and what Mean him when we're on the side of him both Josh Donnie like he was telling us like hey, you're cool like we got it It's pretty much like oh everyone old cool group I said how much do that as a first time starter how much of the end that mean a lot And that was my first time ever using high pads. We didn't use the iPads in high school, but I mean you can say like try to remember the defense you can just come on a silent bring up a play and get help Probably the first or second. You know back after the I thought we say oh Awesome. Thank you very much I That's um I want to say Maybe I don't know but I mean when I'm pretty sure you got the job I was really excited because I'm one of those guys who's the tempo I can run with the tempo You know I mean I'm I'm playing basketball all life in set of football and I feel like
Just the fast pace often so we're running really fits the guys we have right now. I'm really excited for that I know you can throw a football at 65 guys, but can you kick a football 75 grams of weight? I probably question Lincoln what was your question? How is your Your room man? He's a blessing man. I can't complain. He's a great guy. What's his name's Lincoln? Oh I think we're both really clean. That's why we kind of pick each other's really it's because we're very clean and We don't like our words really messy Well, it's true though. It's a true. It's a real pretty clean stuff Ross training in tactical some or if you just been off guard So far I've been all guard. I really don't know like I said I'm taking it practice I practice I can end up being back attack like that and on but No, I'm just really focused in on this past practice and the next
Oh, that mean a lot You know, you put a lot of work in to play here And he's been a dream just for being in Ohio kid is I'm from Ohio kids perspective. It's I mean The biggest wish possible. I was that it's that's gonna be pretty cool. What was it like to sponsor your post game? It didn't fly this can be a weird answer, but it feel like I was playing a game you know that that makes sense I was pretty locked in I felt like just no anxiousness no stress no nothing really I just went in that first game was like Shoot out here now. It's time to roll. You know, they didn't really hit me. I was like it didn't hit me after Like I want to like what you feel doing Get out there at the end of just like honestly. I don't know. I felt less nervous at the high school and I'd make some no sense Um a lot. I mean, I'm learning from Josh Ann Austin I think fire says one of my biggest role models here is my bigger big brother when I first made it I'm a pedean. I don't think this is a deal. Okay. Yeah, no
Yeah, yeah, so yeah pedean Austin those are my guys man. I mean even miles to I mean All three of them. That's those are my roommates and they're progressing every day as well on and I'm excited to see where they where they can get to I'm excited to play with them. Oh yeah, you know, it's been really helpful You know, just keep in my mind just settled and straightforward on the next blood It's a great question. Um like I said, I mean I just need to take consistent in my work. I think that's the biggest thing for me is just Thank you. I'm worried about the next blood Absolutely. I mean when you see defensive And you see defenses start arguing with each other and things like that. I mean Makes a lot easier. You know, I'll have those kind of
I mean You know Um This is a very good football player. When he's on the field, he matches present stuff. We've all been training on my home. There's no tomorrow just going to move. We know what to do. Yeah, there's a seat to be. There was a set switch. Watching you guys on the street. You're even more of a force. It felt like watching you guys. They may be even in a field like that. Yeah, we put in a work during practice. We practice really hard. Coach, they really challenge us at practice hard. When it's growing up like that, what do you feel like being in the mix with that being
a partner? It's us. When you work hard for a sentence and you're able to see what comes out of it, there's no better feeling in that. I was really funny to see. What has Seth been off from practicing for the first two games? What's it been like playing XM for the last two? You know, he's really calm and distorted. You never see real panic and having a guy like that mess you and you know, you're having really played as many meetings for snaps. There's no one outside of the other apps in my left and some in my right. For Seth. Those guys, they do so much for this offensive line of use.
People talk about his intelligence really kind of showing up in the film or in the field. Where have you noticed that intelligence and how has that helped you? Yeah, like I said, and crunched him, you know, when things aren't exactly looking like how we practice it, you know, having a guy like that that has to explode up. We'll do this, this, this, and we execute it. Having a guy like that like this, there's none better than that. You know, what you got? What's my favorite cake? Right, brother. Uh-huh. Uh-huh, and now it's down here. I almost came back to a couple of sun and this and more. Take a look at it Marshall. They've got a couple guys in the deep inside of it that have big tin bodies. Absolutely. What do you see when you look at their tape and see 15, 7, a couple of those guys are pretty
pretty big. Yeah, those guys here, they're real players. They're real players. And so they coach well, you can sell them. They go hard, you know. They're real players over there. We've been practicing for the best of our goldies, you know, and spectacular. And I'm prepared for that. You see, they've been for Genie Tech in the last year. They're different. They take the look. Yeah, they play a good ball over there. You know, their defense plays hard. They challenge teams, you know, sometimes they might be overlooked and they still challenge teams. And so they come out there with the mentality like no matter who's in front of the opponent. What has been the biggest challenge? I mean, the adjuncts right there right in front of you right now, which is kind of a good thing and kind of a bad thing. You should shift off the rest, you know, hitting back in it. Inside. You talking with your shots?
I mean, I hear from Chris and everyone, so I'm not so bothered. It's always good to hear from Guy like that, guys like the one, even Matt Jones would turn him back. All right, Tiger, thank you. Appreciate it. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. And for this year, just be able to get that job. No skills. Mom, I think it's a lot of my weight, my height, this more regard height. But I'm faster my feet and I'm just a little bit easier than that. Sometimes like basketball, I want to be on that just like defend, but you know, you got to stay. You stay square and stuff, or exactly. Yeah, that's a great question. I mean, I feel like these two can answer that for the beer right now. I think KK here, okay answer that.
I don't know what to say about that. What do you guys think? I don't know. I don't know what to say about that. What do you guys think? I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I absolutely love that little change coming from me, so I just want you to watch... You have to listen to me. Maybe you should. I don't know. You don't want to be in the back of the bag. And just like feel like you can stand. I drive. Turn up, I change, honestly. I win, but I don't say for how much IFree do before a life like this. I'm going to. You're going to be catching back, you're near for that. to kill you's influence turns your mind about maybe like the idea of tackle versus driving because obviously his offensive predelitions were like yeah the offensive line for a weekend has he been a partying Centrelion to go? That's um I would I want to say maybe I don't know but I mean when I when I'm for sure you got the job I was really excited because I'm one of those guys is
the tempo I can run with the tempo you know I mean I'm I'm playing basketball all after the set of football and I feel like just the fast pace offense that we're running really fits the guys we have right now I'm really excited for that I know you can throw a football like 65 guys but can you kick a football 75 yards I think it's probably a question Lincoln what was your question how is your your room at the boot he's a blessing man I can't complain he's a great guy what's his name's Lincoln Keen Holt's who I think we're both really clean that's why we kind of think each other's roommates because we're very clean and we don't like our words really messy well it's true though it's the truth the world pretty clean so Lincoln are you still across training at tackle some or if you just been off guard this break oh so far I've been all guard um I really don't know like I said I'm taking the practice I practice I could end up being back at tackle I could not but no I'm just really focused in on this past practice
the next one oh that mean a lot you know you put a lot of work in to play here and it's been a dream just from being in the high-okism from a high-okits perspective it's I mean that's the biggest wish possible I would have I would say that's that'd be pretty cool what was it like last year first game getting on the feeling for the first time it didn't like this can be a weird answer but it feel like I was playing a game that that makes sense I was pretty locked in I felt like just no anxiousness no stress no nothing really I just went in that first game was like you shoot out here now it's time to roll you know I didn't really hit me I was like it didn't even hit me after but no I'm like what'd you feel there and if like get out there at the end I just like honestly I don't know I felt less nervous that then high school and I'd make some no sense I mean I'm learning from Josh N. Austin I think Friars were my biggest role models here is my bigger big brother my first
game I mean I'm up to Dianne I don't want to do okay yeah no yeah so yeah for Dianne Austin those are my guys man I mean even Miles too I mean all three of them that's those are my roommates and their
