I'm going to try to get the ball to Jeremiah. Is that like an aggressive mistake for Will and when you're trying to get the ball to Jeremiah and try to involve your best player like you're not excusing something like that but is there almost like okay like we're trying to get the ball there and like kind of understand why he didn't do anything. Yeah, he just didn't see the line back underneath in the coverage. He read the top of the coverage really well. He didn't see the underneath part of the coverage. So we discuss it just like we normally do between each series about what just transpired and then what are we going to do next and the one thing about Will is he owns everything he does because if you don't own it then you're going to make the same mistake again because you don't realize how you did it. He knew right away he just didn't see the line back or you know he felt like the top of the coverage was deep enough and Jeremiah had pushed them out for he could throw that ball into him but he didn't spot the underneath coverage so you know it's something he'll learn from and hopefully the one thing I love about Will is usually doesn't make the same mistake twice so you know let's hope he has that out of the system.
Can we keep Robinson the athletic? Obviously, he's in probably one of the best corners in the country and he's not he's been out of here but Leonard Moore set up pretty well. I'm going to say you should be curious about the ball and put that whole secondary touch on him. Yeah, I think the whole secondary you look at how much man they play and the reason they do it is because they can you know and no one's really exploited that with him so I think they all can cover you know so it's not like well just stay away from him and throw against this guy I think all of them are really really skilled and I think how coordinated it is with the whole group you know that they all have an understanding of where they're supposed to be when they're supposed to be there and they do a really good job with it so I know they did lose a corner early in the season but they they've seemed to just continue to roll on defense and the statistics show you that. Game full WSY. Yeah, Chip all year when you're prepping a game you know there's another game two seven more games down the road. This is the last one winner lose. I'm curious is that change anything in preparation, late as I snap distribution is there anything
different about knowing that you have no games left after this? That's a good question. I don't think we've talked about that one yet but we certainly don't save things going into games saying hey this is a really good deal let's not run it because we want to run a three or four games down the road because you don't know who you're going to have and what you're going to do you make your decisions based upon the personnel that's available that week and then what's going to help you win that football game and those are the same decisions that are being made now so snap count going into a game we don't really talk about that the only time that ever comes up is when you're up and you're starting to think about substitute and so if the score is 42 seven and the third one are we going to get Donnie out and when are we going to get Seth out you know because you hate to lose a guy when the score is 42 to seven you know in a game because we do have multiple games to play after that but that's the only time we've really talked about that. The other day that's Delivert event after the game Ryan talking about that screen said it was something that was so far from his mind it's not even sure why you guys even practiced it what went over the decision to to the ball out of there in that situation?
Well honestly there was 29 seconds to go in the first half when we run our 25 yard line so let's see if we can get something here on the first play if we can then we'll get into two minute mode but if we can't then you're probably going to take a knee and go in at halftime so we thought it was a safe play to run and see if we could pop something and obviously it worked but it worked because it's a pretty good player so if you can get him into open spaces like we did he can stick his foot in the ground and get north and south really really fast. How have you seen Jeremiah respond to the game that he had and what do you think that says about his maturity at his age? Yeah he's been great you know we practiced yesterday and he was flying around excited about the opportunity to go play in a national championship so he's always a forward looking guy you know what's next what's the next challenge and what do we you know what do we get to do and then that's kind of what his mindset has been like and that does speak to his maturity because he's always what's the next challenge and I think that's one of the things I love about. Over to the right and I'm saying WBNS kind of twofold what was your reaction to Jack's
challenge? He said yeah. Okay sorry what was your reaction to Jack's touchdown? Just excited I mean you know in that situation to to be where that that drive was you know it's first and goal from the one you have to back to back penalties and then you know you're in a one score game and they're tying it up and we're talking about when we get the ball back how much time is left on the clock and then what can we do in regulation and then for that whole series of plays just kind of watching them unfold and what happened but for Jack and in the impact that he has on this program and to see that whole thing kind of just out it was kind of a story book happening right in front of him but it was anytime our defense can score or we can return punts for touchdowns offensive guys get really excited. Joey Kaufman, what's this batch? How much or have you watched last year's gaming against Notre Dame and it's actually that? Is there anything they did in their coverage of Marvin Zillian at three catches that would be applicable how they might try to take away Jeremiah?
I don't we look at it that way but we looked at that game and then we looked at every game they played this year so you know they've played man and every game they've played so it's not like they're doing something special and one game over another game so and they played some good receivers you know there's some teams they played that have some really talented receivers and they've done a great job against everybody whether it's Louisville SC people that throw the ball all over the place they still have done a great job in coverage and then in the numbers we'll tell you that so we got to be prepared for all coverages and that's the other thing they do they don't just play one coverage so you know they're going to mix it up they try to keep you up balanced they try to keep the quarterback guessing they bring different blitzes and attack your pressures in a really good manner I think Al's background is an NFL guy you know being with the Lions and people the Bengals has really shown there's a lot of NFL concept studies running there and and their players do a great job of adjusting on the fly too so because people try to confuse them and line up on different formations and move and things like that and they always seem to sort it out so Dave Vittel 24-7 sports. Chief there's like this narrative out there that I've heard from people that Ohio State
wouldn't be here if they didn't lose to Michigan I'm curious to hear your thoughts on that that the Michigan game woke you guys up or got you motivated or made you made you angry do you agree with that or do you think that's nonsense? I've learned a long time ago as a coach that I'm not in the narrative so you know I think we live in a week to week world and that's how we've always approached things and I think our week to week is just it's the beginning of the week and and what do we do on a Monday what's a Monday look like what's a Tuesday look like what's a Wednesday look like how's your preparation all those other things then you go play the game and you get about 20 hours to adjust to what happened whether it was a one whether it was a win or whether it was a loss and then you move on to the next game so the narrative part of it isn't something I think coaches really talk about that this set up that set up this that's you guys are the experts at writing narratives we're we're just trying to get a first down so I don't look at that from that from that perspective so. All right we're going to pause locally and we're going to meld into the world wide web and take a few calls on zoom let's open up with Dan Tortora.
Dan? Coach the decision to come over to Ohio State just reflecting on that hindsight 2020 and what you can say about this experience and the opportunity that presented itself from Coach Day. Yeah it's been awesome and I think just really you think about as a coach the day to day so your ability to what it's like every day you're in the wooding and to be with this staff and and everybody that's in this building and then to be around these players daily basis is it's what's made this thing really really special so excited that we get an opportunity to be together for one more week because this is an extremely close knit group I think the connection from the players to the coaches and players to players coaches to coaches is is a really kind of special and one of the reasons that we've had this success that we've had so we're going to enjoy these last couple of days here in the wooding and then get on a plane and go to Atlanta and play a game on Monday night. We're going to Kirk Bolts. Kirk? Yeah Chip, on the Jeremiah Smith thing I don't know if your game plan called for him to
be an all-American decoy or did Texas just do anything special to take him out of your offense? Yeah, Pete and his staff did a really good job on the defensive side of some bracket coverages on Jeremiah and I think we'll really recognize it that's why Cornell had a bigger game. Our tight ends were really involved. Ameca was really involved. The running back was involved so you know that's the one thing about here is we have more than one weapon at our skill position so quarterback's got to figure out what they're doing and then take advantage of it and I thought we'll get a really good job of that. Lane Higgins from the Wall Street Journal, Lane. Hey there coach. One of the things I wanted to know is about coach Brian Hartlein and obviously it's clear that he has been exceedingly good at position coach and asset to the offense but one of the things that he has done really well is just develop these guys. You know regardless of whether they're coming in as a four or five star recruit he's
sort of able to pull more out of them so you know given that you've been around many different types of position coaches in your time what does coach Hartlein do that's different or that makes him so good at that specific aspect of his job? Yeah I think whatever the word is that's better than really really good is what Brian is so he's as good a coach as I've been around in all aspects he can do it all he can recruit he can develop players he can put together a game plan you know his knowledge in the passing game is outstanding and we really lean on him a lot in terms of what we're doing from a past standpoint but his ability to develop players what he demands from them and individual drills how he can explain to our players how the how you can apply what you're doing an individual drills to the game itself and then watch that manifest itself is really special but I think Brian is an outstanding football coach and really fortunate they got a chance to work with him this year. And our final zoom call question Tony Erbent Bucket Huddled. Yep with regards to you guys have been planning for 16 or 17 games since even before you arrived
when you did arrive how quickly was that made a two year attempt in terms of like the running game and how do you think Tray and Quinchon have operated in this this split system because they both look as precious as they did against Akron. Yeah I mean we talked about it from the beginning what our long term plan was because of how long the season was going to be and really didn't have any evidence at the college level because at the FBS level there's never played this many games because it was never a 14 for game playoff for you to get to the championship game so you know we talked about this being a long season and how do we do that that was the reason they went out and recruited Q and he got here before I got here but how do you distribute the carries between those guys and they're eerily close and yardage right now I don't know the exact difference between the two of them but it's it's pretty close I know it was one yard going into the Texas game so but both those guys are fresh you're going to need all weapons you're going to need all hands on deck we knew this was going to be a battle of attrition these 16 you know playing a 16 game schedule obviously
we've lost a few guys in Seth and Jimmy and just like everybody else but the core of our guys are still here and they're going to be fresh when we play on Monday. All right back to Columbus Joe Nugin WCMH um on Donnie did not allow any pressures his taxes how much progress is he made since early November to now that left tackle yeah Donnie's done I think really been an unsung hero there in terms of what he's done because switching from guard to tackle is not as easy as I think maybe some people think it is you know you it's a it's a totally different game a lot of times you're out there on an island by yourself you're obviously you're you're also protecting the quarterbacks backside you know because Will is right handed quarterback so that left tackle position is critical for us but um from where he he stepped in and what he did um he's been outstanding and I think you know he was one of our he was the offensive player of the game you know him and Trey they shared that award this this past week against Texas so you know in this building we recognize what he's
done and how he's continued to develop but um I think it speaks to his leadership and and you know his whole mission of why he came back here and how unselfish he is and um that permeates through the whole offense of line and throughout the entire offense and and I think we all look at Donnie as our leader on that side on this side of the ball step on christnie Cleveland dot com you're talking about the fourth and two run earlier how big was that player before with G to gain a couple of yards how much of that is the way you can call that next play yeah it it it it puts it in a whole different perspective so are you making a are you punting you know if if you're incomplete on that um or then if it's fourth and five it's definitely a different play call than what we had an opportunity to call so when you get into fourth and two you're you know you have the ability to run it or throw it um to potentially pick up the first down so um that that was big and I think sometimes you look at games and and look at plays that are you know sometimes they don't they don't they go on notice some but his effort because he got hit and the yards he made after contact to put it into fourth and two was was huge but that's that's g
and he's done everything since I've been here to just whatever it takes for us to win a game and whatever role you want me to play I'll play it and and uh again one of those senior leaders that has really stepped up in a critical situation. Bill landess came to the north ship last couple of games um there's been a little help take for quenchon and yards after contact hit a nice block on the ball you got the trapeon kind of ping pong off people on those touchdowns you scored um what does his physicality bring to your offense and I guess what's it say about him that he's bringing that mentality even though he's not getting the ball 25 times a game. Yeah and I think he's brought it all year long like that you know you look at the run he had in the martial game you know with the unblocked linebacker you know comes to mind right away and a couple of the other physical runs that you know where he's set the tone and I think our players kind of expect that from him whether he's blocking or whether he's carrying the football um but you got to have a physicality you know and you know and to win the whole thing you know you're not going to win it by being a passive group and I think it just sets the tone and shows everybody else that you know what those guys are going to do you know you look at his block on
on trays run on on on that play on uh Friday night against Texas was reminiscent of the block that tray had for him against Penn State you know I think that it speaks volumes to both those guys that they're whether they're block whether they're blocking for each other or they're carrying the football in a critical situation down in the red zone um you know we can count on their physicality and that they're going to deliver a blow to the defense whether it's as a blocker as a bulk area Dan home let me worry ship when you just evaluate what Will's done this season as a whole what's impressed you most about what he's done to get you guys to this point uh I think his leadership and how he he grown into that role organically obviously um almost everybody on offense besides Q uh and him we're already here you know and so to come in and and just go to work you know and I think the player's respected his work ethic and and the time he put in and they watched him grow and develop and in the football party was when they first saw him in the spring to the football player that he is right now you know you can see him growing and leaps and bounds he's fitting great with all of his teammates um but they noticed the things behind closed doors how
hard he works at the game how much he studies football how he puts ourselves and gives us an opportunity because he handles a lot of checks for us and we do a lot of things at the line of scrimmage because he can have that on his plate and he can handle it and I think his decision-making has really allowed us to to do a lot of different things both run in pass-wise in games so um watching him continue each week to we can put more on his plate and so we're always not a we'll never gonna be a play behind because he can put us in the right situation has really been a joy as a coach to watch him do that Bill Rebinoids Columbus Dispash and when you guys lost Josh and and Seth I mean most people probably thought as you're in a lot of trouble what was that a narrative yes very much very much I'm learning I think goodness we were just day-to-day what what uh what did you do and get Justin and Ryan and the players do to kind of get it together and and not be a liability I mean it's um schematically and mentally whatever
about a bit yeah I think it's a combination of all of it you know and when you now have different players different personnel pieces in there you know what do they do well and how do we actually went that and then how do we kind of protect maybe what a weakness is on those guys because you got two different guys in there so you know it wasn't at the same time with both those guys so there was a transition there for a little bit when you know when Jimmy went down and and um Danny moved out and Carson jumped in a guard and and Seth was still there you know really kind of running the show and I think kind of helped us whether that storm initially and then when we lost Seth up and Carson and you know and then starting to rotate the guards you know it was a whole nother thing so you know kind of two separate things but um I think Justin deserves a ton of credit for what he did and how he how he worked with all those guys and I think they got a really good understanding of what we're trying to get accomplished and and I think our job is you know to try to put them in position and play and then let them go play and I think they've done a really good job with that so um you know that's that speaks to the depth of this team we knew
it was gonna be tested when you play this many games um but the fact that we could weather that and um speaks to that really how that a whole line in the in the cohesiveness of the entire group so and finally Tim May, that would have been a rope. It can add just two fast steps. Uh uh number one following up on that Justin Friatt told me that one of the things that stood out to him was the way we'll stepped up in a leadership way with the offensive line when Seth went down. You were out there on the practice field or where it would happen and stuff but what did you notice from that dynamic also a quarterback literally taking ownership of a situation there and instead of hanging heads uh going the opposite direction. No I think it's a good point. I think one of the things will is conscious of you know what's going on he's very aware and so not only to be lose a great player in Seth we lost a great leader in Seth so you know there was a little bit of a vacuum from a leadership standpoint and so we'll did a great job and I think between Will and
Donnie you know that those are the two real leaders of that those guys up front and bringing those other guys along with them so that that that was evident to us after Seth went down that you know both Will and Donnie kind of stepping up and filling that void losing Seth because Seth was such a great leader from that group up front. He's an arremington award winner too. Uh the other thing like Tony Gurderman asked you this while ago but I wanted to follow up on this aspect of what is it like as office coordinator be going in the last game of the year and all of your weapons are available to you it appears and your offensive line is founded south over the last four games. What is that feeling like as you sit there in your office and look at your playbook your pad or your computer whatever you have your plays on etc do you feel like the whole world is open to you create I mean what what is that what is that sense? You do until you turn the tape on and look at their defense and say I don't know if that play is going to work against them I don't know if that play is going to work against them just because of how good they are defensively not still one
thing in our week of preparation and going into it is just how much respect we have for Notre Dame's defense and what they can do and what they've done against everybody they played you know it's you watch those guys play as a fan of football you just kind of admire how how cohesive that entire group is and then how hard that group plays so you know credit to to Marcus and Al for what he's got how those guys got those guys playing right now. But the rest of the game job seems to have had an answer I mean if people do take this away from you've got that I mean do you feel like you've got that going into the you're still what I'm saying. I understand exactly where you're saying but I don't know any coach that ever feels like that I don't think there's any coach six days before the national championship that thinks I got this yeah you did yeah you did yeah you did no matter if I had a Jeremiah Smith or Colonel Tate and that and make a boot for example. I know and we're really really really happy that we have them but we also have great respect for who we're going against and and it's going to be a battle you know and I think that's the great part of it
you know you you have the two best teams in football play against each other you know and and it wasn't voted on that these two teams play it was earned by both by both teams so you know it's an opportunity to go against Marcus and Al and what they're going to put out there defensively and then those players you watch you watch Caross and Kaiser and Watson the rest of that group play it's as a fan I admire how hard that group plays on defense so and if you're a competitor that's what you want to play against you know you really want to do you get an opportunity to play against best so we we played two SEC teams and an opportunity to beat them you know we we played the number one team in the country and we beat them so now this is the next challenge and and the next challenge is an outstanding Notre Dame team and we're excited about the opportunity to go play it. I was just like I'm reacting faster right now playing faster I think it's showing up on tape you can see me move flying around the field so I think I just come with more reps more confidence so yeah it's been pretty good camp so far. Yeah that's I mean the time flies by for sure it feels just like yesterday I was the
I was like starting nickel with Jordan Hancock and stuff so non-play linebacker but you know I'm glad where I'm at I think everything happened for reason for reason. I would say mentally just you know understanding the game he's always had the physical attributes but him being able to understand the game and play fast and use those physical attributes I think sometimes we don't understand the game it can kind of hold hold you back and you're not able to show like your true potential so he's been he's been having a great camp as well. It's been good you got two big fast strong linebackers they do a lot of different stuff on the field so excited to see what culture Patricia can do with us this year but you know I think he has a lot of confidence in our room. I mean that's what we thought about that guy is pretty good he's trying to make a physical effort and everything very simple and very similar to your sense of spring and that you think you can not be ready to play. Man I think you know we're a young guy you make a lot of mistakes and he's really been cutting those down he took a huge jump from the spring so he's been figuring stuff out he's starting to understand stuff understand what's going on and yeah you can see he's
starting to have more confidence as he goes. Did you part of that process for wanting him to get the blotch stripe off or did you have any input in that? I didn't really I don't get too much say I'm not that important but I'm just happy to see he's doing well. You were named the Freaks West earlier this week he feel like our belt has been on there with you. Yeah he's a he's an amazing athlete we got a lot of good guys that should have been on there but yeah he's a crazy athlete you can go look at the numbers but is what it is I guess. I mean I think he's the kind of guy he can do no basically anything on the field whatever you want whatever you want so I mean he could be one of the top defensive players in the country honestly so we'll see how it goes. I mean he's a freshman he was 64 or 230 so I mean he's I used to 44 but he's a little bigger but yeah I just think the biggest thing I noticed now is just how confident he is like he knows what he's doing he knows going on things like stuff like that so I think that's the biggest
biggest difference. Uh probably towards like the middle to the end of last year he started figuring stuff out and then took a huge jump in the spring um so yeah he's just he's been doing a really good job so I'm excited for him. We talked about all the different things that you and our belt can do. How big is it to have a third guy like six years and also get on the field and do two different things? Yeah, Paid's awesome. I think our linebacker room we got a lot of great players. Paid's one of them. He's smart he's reliable he's great football player. So he's one of the probably one of the better tacklers on our team. He just has a great understanding of the defense for him to be so young. I think his knowledge of the game is like that of like some who's a senior or junior that's been playing for three four years so he's going to help us a lot this year. What does it mean to see a guy like that is you know trying to establish the role and you get some more playing time? What does it mean to see him get an eye on football? It's awesome. I always want people to have a beautiful time to get it because I mean he works hard he does
things right um no he says the right things his teammates he knows how to encourage and things like that so he's a high character guy so I was really surprised when he got it but uh it's it's awesome we got a good we got a good room I'm really excited about our LB room. I mean I I think we got such a talented room that we can beat and uh you always stand on your toes you never relax um so I think he pushes us to keep you keep getting better um you know we have days come we come out here you know maybe I make a bunch of plays the next day our brothers make a bunch of plays that it's payin and that's some days it's all three of us so uh just always pushing each other and competing I think that iron sharpens iron and uh I think you kind of see that across the board with our entire defense. Yeah it feels a little weird the four years definitely flew by but you know excited for his last year and uh said to leave my mark.
Um I was familiar with I think basically all of them I didn't know like all the history on all like where they played the NFL but I've heard all their names I don't think there's any of them I never really know about honestly. Yeah yeah I mean like he'd like Riley Petty John from Texas like what does he know about like he doesn't know where any grand grand grand grand grand grand he doesn't know that he doesn't know he's a Hall of Famer and stuff like that or Pepper Johnson and stuff like that so it's cool I think Coach Laura Wright does a good job of uh teaching us about the tradition and the excellence that's came through our state you know he has this going there sing the fight song we're singing buck I swag stuff like that just making sure we know everything what it means to be a buck guy. He told my dad or my brother. Yeah he knows a little about he's got the he had the chance to meet with um you know uh we actually watched film with another day so it was pretty funny but uh yeah Riley's great.
I would like to know what you're telling us. Uh I'd say yeah I'd say improvement and I say confidence that you can see they got nasty that's told you know they got they got uh you know chip on their shoulder something to prove and got the guys up front but making a lot of play so I'm excited for them. Anyway but I'm a kind of feature you see when you hear how do you feel about the music? Do you like songs? Do you not like them? Um I mean obviously the night night games are a different atmosphere. Uh I will say for players like you get out you get up you go you get over quick you don't have the weight around all day sometimes that can suck but there's nothing like a night game in the shoe I will say that you know everyone members we play Tennessee that night game was just electric or I remember being a freshman where we're all black and we played Wisconsin like stuff like those atmospheres or there's nothing really like it. Yeah hopefully we got a lot of guys that should have been on there but uh yeah he's a crazy athlete you can go look at the numbers but uh is what it is I guess. Um I mean I think he's the kind of guy he can do you know basically anything on the field
whatever you want whatever you want so I mean he could be one of the top defensive players in the country honestly so what's the odd goes? I mean he's a freshman he was 64 to 30 so I mean he's 24 but he's a little bigger but uh I mean I just think the biggest thing I noticed now is just how confident he is like he knows what he's doing he knows what's going on things like stuff like that so I think that's the biggest biggest difference. Uh probably towards like the middle to the end of last year he started figuring stuff out and then took a huge jump in the spring um so yeah he's just he's been doing a really good job so I'm excited for him. We talked about all the different things that you and our both can do how big is this to have the third dialect big gears and also get on the field and do the big things. Yeah paintings awesome um I think our linebacker room we got a lot a lot of great players paintings one of them um he's smart he's reliable he's great football player um so he's one of the
probably one of the better tacklers on our team um he just has a great understanding of the defense for him to be so young um I think his knowledge of the game is like that of like some who's a senior junior that's been playing for three four years so he's gonna uh help us a lot this year. It's awesome uh I always want people to have voted for him to get it because I mean he works hard he does things right um no he says the right things his teammates he knows how to encourage and things like that so he's a high character guy so I was really surprised when he got it but uh it's it's awesome we got a good we got a good room I'm really excited about our Elby room I mean I I think we got such a talented room that we can beat and uh you always stand on your toes you never relax um so I think he pushes us to keep you keep getting better um you know we have days come come out here you know maybe I make a bunch of plays the next day our brothers make a bunch of plays that it's paying and that's some days it's all three of us so uh just uh always pushing each other and competing you know I think that iron sharpens iron and uh
I think you kind of see that across the board with our entire defense. Yeah it feels a little weird the four years definitely flew by but you know excited for his last year and uh said to leave my mark. um I was familiar with I think basically all of them I didn't know like all the history on all the like where they played in the NFL but I've heard all their names I don't think there's any of them on their they really know about honestly yeah yeah I mean like he'd like Riley Petty John from Texas like what does he know about like he doesn't know where any great grinch or gratitude is like he doesn't know that he doesn't know he's a hall of fame or and stuff like that or pepper Johnson and stuff like that so it's cool I think Coach Lauren Wright does a good job of uh teaching us about the tradition and the excellence that's came through a house date you know he has this going there sing the fight song we're singing Buck I
swag and stuff like that just making sure we know everything what it means to be a Buck guy. He told my dad or my brother yeah he knows a little about he's got the he had the chance to meet with you know uh we actually watched film with another day so it was pretty funny but uh yeah Riley's great I'd say yeah I'd say improvement I say confidence you can see they got nasty this tone you know they got they got uh you know ship on their shoulder something to prove and got the guys up front but make a lot of play so I'm excited for them so I don't like them. Um this is I mean obviously the night night night games are a different atmosphere uh I will say for players like you get up you get up you go you get over with quick you don't have the weight around all day sometimes I can suck but there's nothing like a night game in the shoe I will say that you know everyone remembers we play Tennessee that night game was just
electric or I remember being a freshman we were all black and we played Wisconsin like stuff like those atmospheres or there's nothing really like it. I feed and actually use the technique right now sometimes like basketball or want to be on that just like defend but you know we got to stay in the stage playing some balls or exactly yeah yeah that's a great question I mean I don't they I feel like these two can answer that for the beer right now I think KJ here okay answer that well I don't know what to say about that what do you guys think I go against every day you know this man is strong ready I'm talking about like you get the basketball feel like you can just do a thing so I know he's really fast just the whole world shank as he had and he got the grip right he doesn't give up on the playing like he said he's gonna go in and watch the film he's gonna be a better man see the hundred feet
he's not like a coach man he's not like a coach chip Kelly's influence change your mind about maybe like the idea of tack over his guard because obviously his offensive predilection was for like offensive line play room game has you been a part of you settling in the guard that's um I want to say maybe I don't know but I mean when I when I'm pretty sure you got the job I was really excited because I'm one of those guys is the tempo I can run with the tempo you know I mean I'm I'm playing basketball all life in set of football and I feel like just the fast pace often so we're running really fits the guys we have right now I'm really excited for that I know you can throw a football like 65 yards but can you kick a football 75 yards like Lincoln just no I probably question Lincoln what was your question how is your your room man for you he's he's a blessing man I can't complain he's a great guy his name's linking keen hoes oh who's cleaner I think we're both really clean and that's why we kind of picked
each other's roommates because we're very clean and we don't like our rooms really messy that's a good night well it's true though it's a truth it's a real pretty clean so Luke are you still of cross-training at tackle some or if you just been all guard this break oh so far I've been all guard um I really don't know like I said I'm taking it practice I practice I could end up being back at tackle I could not but no I'm just really focused in on this past practice and the next one so yeah oh that mean a lot um you know you put a lot of work in to play here and I just spent a dream just for being in Ohio kid is I'm from Ohio kids perspective it's I mean that's the biggest wish possible I would have I would say that's it'd be pretty cool what was it like just last year first game getting on the field for the first time it didn't like that's gonna be a weird answer but it feel like I was playing a game yet if that makes sense I hit I was pretty locked in I felt like just no anxiousness no stress no nothing really I just went in that first game was like shoot out here now it's time to roll you know it didn't really hit me I was like
it didn't hit me after I know I'm like what'd you feel there and if like getting out there at Indiana just like honestly I don't know I felt less than there's that in high school and that makes no sense um a lot I mean I'm learning from Josh Ann Austin I think Friars is one of my biggest role models here is my bigger big brother when I first came in I'm up to do yeah okay yeah no yeah yeah so yeah for the Austin those are my guys man I mean even Miles too I mean all three of them that's those are my roommates and they're progressing every day as well and I'm I'm excited to see where they where they can get to I'm excited to play in the field with them oh yeah you know it's been really helpful you know just keep in my mind just settled and straightforward on the next play what do you think the biggest stuff is that it's a great question um like I said I mean the I just need to take consistent in my work I think that's the biggest thing for me is
just ain't consistent and worry about the next play so you got it from the guy you were in the play yeah wow that's weird yeah I mean I guess they didn't want to get my nerves up but like I was ready I mean I did I took most of the ones that solved camping I mean I was already I was pretty much that yeah I wasn't really nervous to start the game yeah what was his advice do yeah he said you got it you mean you're going against Tyler league and Kyle every day and practice me and it's not different almost different are you now though to attend to the two-star attend as a player you know having having that under your belt um me I'm more confident I know what's going on I can see like I can see what's going on with the defense I know what's going on I know what's coming I mean I understand the game's a lot better than what it was like yeah which adds up to what faster start yeah yeah yeah playing with that does for our line I mean if we get out early it's get the defense change in place either they change their defense you start fast I mean they're
trying to get the calming play but you start faster I'm not going back you trust a lot of touch ups yeah of course they isn't pretty much said though you deserve to play man you know some warm up fast what were you expecting this week in terms of your role um wherever they need me if it's left right wherever it's I need to go in I go in and go back to do the front of me I like playing tackle um took me back to high school days but I should back in high school and really ran the ball a lot really into and passes but it was fun change got my made my feet better I would say okay they want me there I guess I'll play I mean they need me they need me also in the illness that swept through the office line room a lot of times the coaches and players just said that that was still relying for the groom you know getting you experience among others what was that like for you and double dipping playing some tag or playing some guard the same practice
it was based like a group effort like for me knew we had guys out and we just had to go back practice all five guys is wherever they were playing we just got to go how much of that accelerate your development like that time with the ones you actually get it really said it then I was jumped in there I didn't really know so we like one or two practices with practices but like after those I was like I was good my confidence grew um yeah it seemed like there was sort of a settling in process for you and the Akron game maybe play got better if the game went on it and really need to especially in the ground game things seem to take off but what was there a moment when it clicked on the field for you like was there nerves and then a time of settling in I guess how taking you through kind of that first game mentally yeah first game obviously you're gonna have nerves be the first time starter but then like after the first couple plays meaning you have nerves naturally so that's first complete I was good I was just rolling also it was also
yeah um you yeah it's but like I prepared well um and camp and practice all week and I was I was ready um yeah I have two multi-year starters I did a lot I mean I could ask them hey what we got here but I was prepared well I mean I was telling Jimmy and said it's like a way our blocks were not the emotional side of it what it just has a guide from Ohio what does it mean to start it it was always my dream to come here and play and start and having that like me as you're like keep going keep building those days and those games and keep building what a much younger Austin don't you know if you people from you with that uh no not I don't think even I told like me I asked my younger self even committing I wouldn't believe that now I have a couple of starts yeah awesome has this happened faster than you
you know I knew that year two I was gonna see you some playing time now starting week one year two I didn't receive that but like I was ready in spring ball like a new I was going I was going to play some soft things but so what does it mean to you to it's not only get the opportunities to play but like you play well enough now maybe coaching staff trust you they get the the best out there whatever the situation that's the earn that so early on the year two I guess it shows like my preparation my hard work and just everything I put into this and I just finally show it up on a field there a moment the top season in the end of the spring and I can't really realize that you could play at this high level with the ones you know if you yeah uh the definitely was in training camp I mean blocking highly can tie every day so like it feels like it feels a lot of confidence and doing it well and not like getting balled
or anything so there's defensive tag wasn't that was the title of the season in spring uh hero in uh Jason Moore in Taiwan all those guys pretty much anyone on his deepened mind gets your fits all the time so and came back as well so yeah yeah I was more collected how about the ability of the great in the line how much can he help you he helped me a quite a lot and I'm proud that he's our starting center not so what else is but um I mean he's like the captain of the line he's another voice on the line with guys like Josh Fryer and Josh Simmons dining Tiger that means another voice and that a captain up there look ways of having that and I'm with this much experience help during the end of the middle of the line man a lot he can tell you like before the play was going on like how to block someone like what you need to do and like that's a lot Tiger talking about how calm he is how much does that mean you have a guy who's kind of been there
and seeing the line it makes us us more calm like especially me and pay as a first star so like we were up here what what said like he brought us down I mean we were like fine like our emotions weren't high we settled in is that like something he tells you is that something you pick up on by how he's acting how do you kind of mean sense what he's trying to do by how he's acting and what I mean him when we're on the side of him both Josh Donnie like he was telling us like hey we're cool like we got it but it's pretty much like oh everyone oh cool group how much do the first time starter how much did you add that so mean a lot and that was my first time ever using high pads we didn't use the high pads in high school but I mean you can say like try to remember the defense you can just come on a silent bring up a play and get help though really not probably the first or second after the I thought we say oh and said great awesome thank you very much it seems like training part is a part of it's not the
whole thing they're getting bigger and smaller it's like the culture part of the part of the part how much of the factor is that in a part of your change that's it's also it's a lot and I mean it's I feel like you can't be able to transform your body like I like I have with like people here come and do that without having that mentality part with it it's like we we always talk about competitions here and our our culture is fight so we're always here to compete and I feel like that is just that's what gets you in this mindset when you talk about that transformation you just give us a little sense maybe with numbers or body fat or like you're and what do you do the weight group how big is that transformation definitely I don't have really specific numbers but I just like it's more just like I can just I feel like feeling when I'm playing like I remember how it felt to play when I just got here and out I know how how it feels to play like like like just today like it feels physically different on my body and it's like
just it's I'm getting used to that makes sense could you also said about you that you are just a completely different guy from last year do you hear the word just get it down yeah so do you feel like you weren't at that place mentally I think I was but I think I had some uh I would say like kind of like confidence issues like I was just but you know I mean I work past it and I know I can I know who I am and I know I can be here so I know I can do it it's not like that's those are those are all it's on the past now did the past the play time in a very obvious opportunity guys had to step up the upper the upper the upper the top you can get over that confidence issue there because it's now
with everyone's a little bit so kind of it's just like um just I mean it's just just being here like I feel like being here every day working with the guys every day it's just like you know you become this person that you might not have like you might not have like felt like you were before that but like coming here working every day stacking these days like like you know I mean I just feel like I I realized who I am and I know what I can do now I knew I knew I could play here I mean it's just it was like the like I just I don't know how to explain I just like I've always known I can play here it's just I'm just
like let's go like I'm ready like I'm ready to attack with our guys the room to help you to figure that out which is my point first shot think KJ was a big influence tie Hamilton and tie league they all they all helped me a bunch last year kind of just pushing through you know all right well plan as much so I just wanted to get like more experience under my belt so I can know bring younger guys with me because I've been through one of those younger guys we're seeing what have you seen from well because I feel like last year we all forgot about it because he was heard now he's running you know almost a second man up behind you and tied what have you seen uh well as a workhorse he he gonna stay quiet he gonna work hard and that's what I love about him he focuses he don't really talk much he's going to get the job done do a job right really has any mistakes what would be a successful season a national championship I ring when all the games we don't want to lose anything we got a mindset that we can't be beat
and we just gotta go show it seems like you guys expect the national championship every year this year even more so you guys have all come back for this you guys have all decided like enough as it went up is that is it's keep feeling difference or is there not really any difference it's just the same word oh it's definitely a difference everyone working harder um we noticed our last run like we most of us don't have any years after this so we got to go go bigger to our home and we're not trying to go home finished big we know what you guys think of Michigan but when you look at what they did they won the national championship and you guys took them down to the final minute right you know what I mean I mean you you were right there something goes a little different you guys could have been one that came against them does that tell you anything about like that hey you guys want to win a national championship but you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the national championship last year like you're that close so I'm saying we just like work harder that's that's kind of coach makes of saying you know nobody cares just work harder like those you know when we played Georgia it's the same thing last last play you
know they went on the win in 90 so we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season I think would be fine how frustrating is that you're that close against the last two national title uh of course as you know it's frustrating but you can't change the outcome you can't really do I don't uh dwell on it you just gotta you know come back and work harder do things better than you did last year and hopefully the outcome will change as that is you get older you kind of learn I thought I was working hard but then you always find out there's a little more you could have been doing yeah definitely I mean that's how that's what growing up is basically in college and I thought freshman year I was working as hard as I could but now I look back at it I really wasn't working hard at all compared to what I'm doing now so just to learn anything uh 80 85 I mean I can it's all on me I just I think it's a little higher I was just trying to be funny but I mean it's all on me I just gotta run harder get in shape
I think I think I think I definitely can last I was just you know we got to get the young guys that come along with us we can't play 50 snaps again that's just too much on our bodies uh just everybody like online D-line we gotta get those younger guys to play you know get debt pieces on the D-line and O-line and everywhere else so we can last that long run speaking about life plan and all of them snap if you like playing that new snap to them last year because I don't know if any of us were really expected to play that next time yeah I did unless we were like winning by like a lot uh I thought like Darnel's mom is you know I can go sit down or something but we're playing them big games like you know Notre Dame too or North those kind of games I of course I want to be because I know I can contribute and I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I get the job done oh yeah definitely K-Mac is a K-Mac's animal y'all you haven't really
seen it yet but in practice he shows all the time he's just he's just he's growing right now he has to work I think he just has to get you know in the playbook things like that you guys are about the exact same size you're both listening to six degree you're three 27 he's three 26 yeah he's I kind of look at him like my my junior but you know K-Mac he's gonna be a great player he's got to develop more and getting to play book so really a lot on you older guys there's that large group of young guys and then there's the seniors in the back is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys along as well yeah definitely we got to be leaders um like I say we got to have them play this year we can't just play all the snaps they got to get in there and get some work and we got to get them right Darnel season so they can play and I just play they want to like contribute like make plays tackle sex yeah they're definitely some big dudes
and they all work hard I'm really seeing much it's only a day two when I'm passing on but throughout the workouts they've been working hard you know they they're determined I have to say that and it looks like they're ready to work with me I think that is definitely I think if you look at the last couple of nice and championship winners like team of North they you know they got two good detacled two athletic detacles look at Georgia two athletic detacters so I think that's definitely neat if you want to go on that big run and beat those big teams. They're modified by the defense attackers like what's Jordan's Jordan Davis and DL Carter and let's miss again it's Chris Jenkins. Tell them more questions about it.
It is funny like how I mean you understand it because you play it but I feel like some time I don't know are people realizing how important defense tackles are a little bit more than they used to? I think so I think they're starting to develop to develop more and more of these like freakish detacles yeah like in the combine just now you see in like those guys they're moving forward to 478s and things like that so we'll see. And when you think it when you think about those freakish detacles how do you think you fit into that mold of that kind of player you watch that and say yeah that's me. Yeah definitely I think I'm top notch when it comes to detacles but I don't want to you know get a big head but you know I watch it come on I watch it do do the drills. I have tape here you're like you're looking like my film so I think I'm up there with all those things. Do you become like a artist who comes to the bad young guys? I think your legs have your things. I mean when you're going to bring practice you're not doing as much a weapon on the weapon. That's gross. How do you work on that? Do you have like a goal in mind?
I don't remember how many you had last year but you have a goal in mind? 35 how many do you want to have? I mean as many as I can have I think I have more than that but I think he said it on the I think they didn't count some of them and some of them were like just listed so but I think we work on drills matching the hand I think that's uh goes big and uh what we do is a D line you know just affecting the quarter of that is Anyway you can it's just great for the defense you know just that little thing you cover it is I you know he might throw it a little bit to the left to our player so So it's something that you really really have to work on. You do that with what you do. It's theory that's one of the things that you maybe worked on the most. I think I just have like a like a eye for the ball comment. I kind of just look at the quarterback and just I see him like load up I just try to get in his ways and sometimes he just throws it to me. I'm irritated if you want to be a high state quarterback. I mean they get frustrated but you know we're a team you know we're just getting better.
That's a lot of a lot of different backs man they just learn to grow for them. If you got a pick your top three backs you have a pull right now. I don't really have a top three but I'll give you I'll give you one. I would say, say quan, Gibbs and I like McCaffrey. Auto he was injured this year I like McCaffrey. I appreciate it. Who's the best back in this drive? I lead out of the yard that's y'all that's y'all decision. Playing with Will Howard when I'm going to remember most. We're a Howard man he's just such a great lead such a great leader man. It's just like in moments where you know usually a lot of players they fold man he was just always calm and relaxed man. He just the leader that he was man that's one thing I'm going to remember about him. Anything James people. Yeah he's he's going to be really good man. He's on Coastalog.
I think he got the transfer in as well from West Virginia just that one two punch with them both as well they're going to be really good backs and so James people's man he's smart the way that he goes about his business man he's mature and so man he's growing you know just as a person in as a player and so man yeah definitely Ohio State you know that running back room is in great hand. Yeah coach coach hard line man he's full of energy man and he's creative as well you know just learning from him as well you know trying to run more outside the backfield was being able to learn from coach hard line and so he's definitely creative at what he's he does and he brings a lot of energy to the team as well and so I think that would do really good. Just intensity man then since the other playoffs every game man is like the intensity got you know higher and higher and so you know being able I know in the lead it's the same thing
even if it's not the playoffs just every every game and then since the key is getting higher and so yeah you just I know you got to bring it you know each and every day and come in and work just like Ohio State you know I definitely feel like Ohio State they definitely do a good job of preparing us for that you know I just remember even before going through this process I'll I'll talk to a lot of players before then and they told me a lot of just about how much Ohio State prepared them you know for the NFL and so yeah yeah yeah I know I took a couple days off after the national championship and then shoot right after that I'm writing right in Tampa floor then I'm right to it and so yeah I think while trained I trained at your birth performance I think it's called the House of Athlete or the compound now they did a good job man they're just bringing us in and the way they went about training us man they did a really good job the bucket near know I haven't
Tampa Tampa nice this is nice it's a nice city man really nice yeah the 40 to broad and avert yeah yeah no man it's really all about technique and then it's about mine said as well and so on my say you know it's for the love of my brother it's for the love of will highway it's for the love of the receivers who I got on the perimeter just making sure you know first of all my quarterback doesn't get sack and I I told will I think it was before the first game I was like I got your brother it's I said man I'm not gonna let you get hit you know and so I don't know if I don't know if I gave up a sack I'm not sure that but I know if I did I haven't given up too many and so man it's for the love of my brothers though man making sure the ball get in their hands you know the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed in my game you can't really work on this you know in
all season I feel like it's more so you know you got to put the pads on you got to go through some inside run you know maybe it's really just continuing run through tackles and so that's I feel like that's one of the areas in my game you know I want to continue to get better I feel like I did a good job of that my senior and so I just want to continue to build on that yes I did yes I did I did me with New Orleans as well I never got that comparison actually I know I've a come here sure yeah man I would come here great great back man just what he does and those 101 matchups he's dangerous man and he's so smooth he's so smooth as well I'm not going to lie he smooth yeah um inside zone from stack being able to hit that thing downhill and I'll say the next one is probably just an option route out of the backfield you know and man and man coverage you're
getting on that linebacker and so yeah I say the man the biggest thing is the way that he carries himself man in a way that man he approaches the game he comes in with the monster you know he's going to work every single week you know every practice you know he's working hard you know um even shoot I don't know every good I think he had every game was a good game for him man and so but still man he always has the mentality to mindset that you know he's going to come in each and every day he's going to continue to work and get better man and so he's definitely man he's going to be a special player man he really is man a lot of ups and downs man it's just how you respond to adversity and I feel like that's something that God has definitely helped me
to do better is this um not have something to lean on now you know I remember before I met him you know going through those adversity I had nothing to run to you know you can run to people but they still can't it's not too much they can't truly help you you know I feel like you know I feel like the only person that can truly help you is your relationship with Jesus Christ and so being able to lean on him you know he gives you in those moments where it's tough you know where it's slow and when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about um he gives you he gives you that peace and comfort you know um even in those moments man we're so hard that you can't you can't explain it's like man I'm going through this but like how am I still filled with this internal joy you know how do I have so much peace in this situation and so that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you and so you run to the Bible and from being around power to him um man eight those guys have such a great mentality man I might just really love their mentality
especially um Q as well you know I talked about will Howard his leadership but Quincham mentality man um that boy just yeah that boy just gifted you know you see you know sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like you know he should have a negative five yards and then as soon as you know it you know he that running through somebody still forming somebody and shoot it's a game to 10 and so shoot I think yeah man I think it's just like he's just gifted man to be honest he's just gifted you know he's he's a big back you know he's strong and so um you know he's he's able to do he's able to do those things and so um yeah man it's definitely you know I look at his game and I want to you know at the same time I want to learn from Quincham you know I want to look at this game it's like man where where can I get better at as well you know that's the type of player I am I'm always looking to get better man I'm always looking to grow as a player Julian San oh yeah he's gonna be a great but he's gonna be a great quarterback man he's so so accurate and so um he's definitely man I know Coach Dez definitely going to get him right just
you know um continue to grow as a leader continue to grow as a player and so he's going to he's gonna be really good for high state uh he's that I know just the quarterback position um I feel like you know the quarterbacks in the past they've they've definitely been vocal and so I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to um ask Julian San as well it's to be that vocal leader and lead the um and lead the offense and lead the team shoot man he has he has a build like JK Dobbins and um I kind of see them you know similar similarities in their game as well and I know JK Dobbins he was a great running back um I feel like he's not talked about his none um a lot but man his career here you watch his highlights is is great I remember um before I recruit before I committed here I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights like every every um one of his years here like four or five times and so man he was such a great back and um I feel like you know um when I see JK Dobbins when I see um James people I see similarities to both of their games I feel like they
play the same and so I appreciate you all yeah I'll be going
all right all I got coming in last shot new to roll so I just attack every day really the same way it's taking advantage very well physically how different are you weight wise body wise all that from your uh I think I got a lot bigger I'm like 240 you know like 244 right now last shot I play at like 236 to 37 what does it feel like 244 or value you feel like almost a different machine out there yeah like what's it what does it feel like to be running around out there like you are with more more back I just feel like I'm like like like like more downhill like stronger like I'm taking all blocks better it's bigger is it don't think uh maybe that's not the correct term but to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year and you played quite a bit last year and stuff what do you have to get straight in your head about being on the field that much more
this is gotta get ready to just play 30 more snaps so are you are you how would you describe how much you're looking forward to it from an 8 stand yeah I'm looking forward to it I'm ready for it my I'm ready for it I think the text is open it's a rematch so to say but it's not really two different teams compared the last time y'all played stuff how's that enhanced this camp for you and this team getting ready for like we're an opener of that magnitude yeah with an opener like that we've been um we've been emphasizing it a lot we know we got coming so we know we got to do we've been prepared for it I already just probably worked today I think Riley ready to play right now he he advanced freshman like he ended he in the book he stood in like he advanced and his measurements crazy like he saw like sideline too or like you said you're ready right you know you're ready what was that process like during last season could you feel yourself becoming more and more ready so wherever the team needed yeah because that's pretty much what my role was just whenever I was needed I had to step up so
I feel like that's what built me into me being able to say I'm ready for this year when you say ready is it more a physical thing is it a mental thing when I say ready I think it's pretty much like everything physically mentally mostly I think I'm there oh I still want more time how different is that responsibility um I feel like it's uh it's a way bigger responsibility with me having to step up this year but I kind of go about it the same way like last year I was attention over everything I did I feel like this year it's gonna be the same thing it's probably a little bit more and what word? uh I say I say
describe my game I say like when you think of me you would think of like a like a bully like a silver bullet like I'm really a bully I'm always on the ball that's how I like to play and think no I ain't got to be my nickname but oh yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah oh think it fit me because I don't know I just like the defense I feel like we got like you said we got a lot of freedom and we moving around a lot a lot of the terms is like no I don't know I don't really not answer that that's okay does it you get to go on your instincts a little bit more maybe and it's not so thinking of too much I don't even know if I say that because there's a lot of thinking going on but it's like I just like it's deep I like how the pressure deep is I like what you got going on what was it sad when CJ left the right yeah uh now I wanted to much sad I was kind of like happy for you
like no miss it that's what you want don't miss him in that? no no no all right no that's my dog I'll say yeah kind of missing a little bit but yeah I'm happy for you though all right well thank you go ahead one last but coach days talked a lot about the guys who played some last year but maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for that wasn't maybe your national championship you guys will win your own yeah how much do you feel that as a guy who's certainly contributed last year but will be in this bigger role and along with some of your your classmates yeah I do feel like um yeah I do feel like I did win a naligia but like you said my role wasn't same as how's going to be this year so yeah I definitely want to want to go get another one experienced that like feeling with me be on the field a lot more place oh bell thank you very much it runs a unique offense compared to NFL especially with the way he uses receivers how do you anticipate your role changing and how do you view the offense from a receiver perspective specific yeah um I mean I think he likes to really push the ball down the field um he likes to be balanced
he likes to uh give different looks to a difference you know we're going to uh not to try to get too much into it but you know we're going to use emotion move some guys around and things of that nature um I think for myself I feel comfortable playing any of the positions that is that is asked whether it's the slot the outside positions and um unique part about our offenses I don't think necessarily you play the x or the z because the pit on the formation of the hash you can be the opposite you could you can be the x but then you're to the field now you're the z so you got to really learn uh the entire concept and know where you're out of in the field which I think makes everybody smarter players because you don't pigeonhole yourself I just play x you know I'm only know this position like you get in two minutes you're the z now you got to know what to do you may have the clear outrout or you may have the backside dig like you got to know uh what you're doing so I think he doesn't just say like we're going to do this offense he's really trying to create an offense that fits our personnel really well that that field boundary thing yeah that's a thing in college but it seems like it's more unique to clip is that is that something you're
used to seeing in other offenses you've been in yeah definitely I mean I think if if I'm on the left hash like technically I'm the x you know I'm in the boundary but if we're on the right hash I'm still on the left side I'm really the z in the concept because I'm to the field I'm to the strength of the tie-down so um I've been in offenses like it's similar like that before and um you know I just think he he one thing I think that's really stood out as the compliments of our routes that we have so far I feel like we have a chance to really run similar stems but there's different routes off those stems and things like that which I think for receiver like myself who uh you get you know a really good look at DBs and they study your film they study your splits like having routes that look the same but break off a different different angles is extremely important because it feels like you have some versatility in your bag to go out with versus like you got this hitch again your backside like that's all you got you know what I mean so um yeah he's just been a really good player person to work with
and he's been really communicative with the leaders and how we want this offense to look like in some of the ideas that we may have as well so it's it's been a really uh cool transition you talk about the transitions you've heard offense in three years probably your fourth and six years yeah how do you not kind of build up some barriers yeah man I gotta do this again right um I think you know human nature is is always um a factor in whatever you do in life but I think I try to make a conscious choice of coming in with a new year mentality each and every year and I think it's easy because we've had so many changes and um it's been great working with Marcus and Jaden and Jeff and Sam all of everybody like it's it's been great with working with all the quarterbacks and um I just have a mentality and not really being complacent like I try to really focus on the things that I can come back better at this year and I've been working my my butt off to do that so um I think
the easy thing and when I was younger you're like dang like you just want that consistency you know I mean like you want that um something you could depend on but like life isn't life isn't always like that so um I've been reinvigorated because of just the energy that DQ brings in to our building each and every day and and the coaches as well like it's fun competing you know what I mean and sometimes I could get lost in the grind but um I think the reason why you make it here at this level is because you you fall in love with the competition of it and I think the competition breathes the success because um that is really where you the iron truly sharpens iron so you know other guys are going to make plays but you get excited to go in there and and know that the next day we're going to go right back after the defense so um for myself I'm just looking forward to continue to grow with the quarterbacks that we have um I'm in year six now which is extreme blessing and um leader one of the leaders in our room and I just try to take the bullbite
of horns with that and so uh that's really been my focus and uh you know I'm excited for another year so us it's looked like you're being more vocal on the sideline to help young guys definitely something you decided this offseason or uh I think that's uh been a part of my maturation process as a leader um I've always seen myself as somebody that was a uh a leader by example um but from coaches and other teammates I've had over the years um guys like to hear what I have to say for whatever reason sometimes you know and I think the biggest thing where I've tried to figure out where I fit in with my vocal leadership is I never wanted to be like a dictator you know I mean I never wanted to tell guys what to do or or be a yellow or things like that like when I say something I wanted to have power I wanted to have meaning and I hope you know the guys would feel the same way if they were to ask them that question um because I want to see all these guys when man like it's it's hard to make it in this league and stay in a career and so anyway I could help the receivers the DBs I'm talking to some alignment Johnny who's who's rehabbing his foot you know
I mean like everybody has a role and everybody has a different story and path and so if I could share what I've been through my testimony to help them or uh do things that kind of slow down the process I'm gonna try to do that because um we need everybody from the rookies to the 10 year vets to to make this thing work so um more so I try to speak to what I what I know and and really those honest conversations that I try to have with guys what they know I'm coming from a good place and I think I'm not the type of guy where I'm just going to talk in at them like if they see something like I could take a coaching point from Luke McCaffrey I could take a coaching point from day on me from Jahan from uh Marcus from anybody you know like I think that's what makes you a great player when you can really uh be coachable from anybody and and not take it from a personal standpoint hi are you good um going back to what you were saying about Cliff and how was he as a teacher in teaching all of us yeah I mean I think he does a really great job of making things simple
first and foremost he doesn't over coach and I think that's the trust that he has in our group and his and his coaches our position coaches to um fill in the details so we'll have an install meeting and um it'll be a good amount of time but then our position coaches will have time and we'll make it specific to that position and so um then we'll come in and have a walkthrough um and then after that we'll have another walkthrough and so I don't think there's been a time where I've come out here and I'm kind of worried about what I got you know what I mean and when you get into certain offices there could be so many details where you could be overwhelmed and I think then it it forces it kind of separates guys in a sense that like one guy may study more than another guy but when you have these these sessions that we have where we're having an installs in the morning we're having two walkthroughs and then we're coming on the field and doing it like I think you notice a lot of guys are playing a lot faster and more confident because he's keeping it simple but also he's very particular in in what he's expecting but it's not a lot so um there's not a
pressure of to get it right but at the same time um you know it's expected of you and and you know you're going to have the tools given to you to be successful out there on the field. And this offseason just the totality of change from front office players coaches the turf field I mean what what does that been like for you just to see what's going on? Uh it's been fun um you know I think from uh Mr. Harris and the entire ownership group down to uh Adam Peters down to DQ down to Jada who we drafted and bringing in Marcus and Jeff and all those guys and down to leaders we have on our team I think it was extremely specific on the way they tried to build this thing going into this year um first of having the right people bringing in leaders bringing in guys who love to compete. First thing that DQ said when he came here was and his first meeting like if you love to compete this is going to be the place for you and I love it you know I mean I love bags and and going at it with the DBs every day like the little mundane stuff can seem a little boring but that's I think that was the the where you make the
gains during the offseason where you're really focused on I'm hey like I'm a I'm a give all I got for this day and I'm a get better and then I'm a I'm a learn from the film and come back tomorrow and ready to do it again and he also understands like the the benefits of having breaks like he's giving us breaks we've had you know weeks off here and there the weekend composed ourselves but then come back and give it all we got you know what I mean and when you got a coach that understands the physicality of an entire season where you guys do need breaks by the same the same time we're going to get after it uh it makes it fun as a leader because you can take that to your room and be like yo we got these we got this week you know I mean that's extremely important but you know we have this little break coming up um where you're going to get your your mind and your body and your soul right so um coming into this season I'm I'm really optimistic of what we can be this year and I think it started with the foundation that uh the ownership group and the entire staff has built and now it's on myself as a leader to continue to hone that in into the locker room but I think it's great because we have so many great leaders from all across the league
who have won and hey we got Bobby Wagner in there you know I mean I asked a hall of famer so like you know being able to have kind of guys like that that you can lean on that can sometimes take over that leadership role where it doesn't fall on one person I think it's uh uh extremely refreshing and knowing that everybody's on the same page and the message is the same um allows you to go out there with confidence and always expect to know you Terri you seem to spend many of your off seasons learning about things beyond football hobbies what have you did you do anything to this off season so far to hobbies or increase your knowledge of this the world around you uh see the question um play a lot of golf uh as that they just keeps my competitive juices flowing um uh uh planning the wedding um that's going well and uh man I've just been grinding like honestly you know I mean I've been hungry uh this off season like uh I started working out you know pretty early and uh you you start to see guys like coming back and it's just fun to like to be
here and competing and feeling like everybody's on the same page you know what I mean like and so for me I'm a grind every off season but just this one just feels like it's the start of something you know new and special and the foundation of is extremely important and to be a part of that to have a hand in that um you know it's it's an honor you know and I put a lot of expectation on myself to come out here and and be the guy that I know I'm capable of and also like take him the next step and uh being somebody that our quarterbacks that can trust and and believe in so this off season was pretty simple for me um it was just really about you know working and and and grinding and getting better you talked about Jayden before and you're anything so far I know we haven't seen everything but in terms of his his arm strength the throws he's making anything surprising so far about the types of his ability in that regard definitely uh I think after the second or third crosser that he threw I started telling receivers like hey you gotta get your head around you know I mean because again each quarterback throws the ball differently and sees
the field differently so sometimes on crossers a lot of quarterbacks may like to see you cross the ball and get into that open zone over there if it's man flattened off they like to see you get open with him he has a really good anticipation over the middle of the field where he can make those throws and give you a chance to catch and run and uh he he's really accountable too like we had a play today where he felt like he missed me and you know it's not a big deal at all you know I mean him and I could talk to those things and there's been a play that I've talked to him about I could do a better job but again like that open that open form of communication from a rookie I think is it's very rare and I think it speaks to the confidence he knows who he is but he's also not afraid to say when he's wrong and he knows he needs room to improve but his touch on the debauls is amazing you know I love getting extra reps after practice with him we're just catching the topping of a deep ball as big for me you know I mean I get to track the ball over my shoulder and as big for him to be able to get used to dropping the ball in the bucket but he just naturally has an ability to throw the ball he sees the windows really well and now he's just you know continue to get adjusted to
the speed in the past rush I think he's these reps that he's getting are unbelievable during 11 on 11 because he's getting to feel pain and all in and DA and Cleveland Farrow like we got some dogs up there who are going to come after him you know what I mean and we got some great guys up front who are going to protect them and so these reps I feel like are even better than just 7 on 7 and 7 on 7 I think he could do in the sleep to be fair like he throws the ball really well but when you get this 11 on 11 in two minutes drill you're putting them in game like situations and I'm looking at them in his eye I'm like we play a real ball now like we we we playing you know what I mean and you just see no no anxiousness in his game in his demeanor which is extremely exciting and and then you know he's extremely lighthearted and he's always smiling so he's joking with lime and D line he's just cool with everybody and like I said like for a rookie quarterback to come in like that where guys are gravitating to him and he's not afraid to be who he is that's dope I think he has a bright future for himself the tough losses the tough seasons can weigh on a player sure you're entering
the prime of your career J.A. kind of mentioned it last year all he cares about is winning he wants to win now is there a sense of urgency you obviously always want to win yeah knowing that you know you're you're getting to the prime your career like you want to win now yeah I think that's a fair question I think you know you start to evaluate when you I'm in year six and you know it's how fast it goes and I try not to put the cart before the horse we're looking too far ahead by the same time you do want to win you want to be a part of a winning culture and have a chance to win the Super Bowl and the playoffs and all those things like that's why we we do this personally and I'm just excited with being a part of a organization in an environment where now like everybody's on the same page in the in the in the message is uniform and it speaks from the top down and it reflects in the guys that they're bringing in you know all the guys that they brought in are guys who are hungry who are competitors who not only fighting for spots but are going to help us win games and
when you're around an environment like that like that that that makes you excited makes you hopeful and you know you don't know how it's going to turn out until we start playing games but the foundation is extremely important and I think this offseason we've really done a great job of building that they have and then when a coach Quinn guy here building with this team so I feel like we're going to be going into this offseason really knowing what we all got to do individually to become ready for camp but the the message is clear to come back to camp ready to compete and and be ready to win appreciate you guys one of the funniest guys on the team right here we plan as much so I just wanted to get like more experience under my belt so I can know bring younger guys with me because I've been
well as a workhorse he he goes stay quiet you're gonna work hard and that's all I love about him he focuses he don't really talk much he's going to get a job done do a job right really has any mistakes what would be a successful season the national championship I ring when all the games we don't want to lose anything we got a mindset that we can't be beat we just gotta go show it seems like you guys expect the national championship over here this year even more so you guys have all come back for this you guys have all decided like that is that this is can you feel the difference or is there not really any difference it's just the same word I was definitely a difference everyone working harder we noticed our last run like we most of us don't have any years after this so we got to go go bigger going home and we're not trying to go home finished big we know what you guys think of Michigan but when you look at what they did they won the national championship and you guys took them down to the final minute right you
know what I mean I mean you you were right there something goes a little different you guys could one that game against them does that tell you anything about like that hey you guys want to win a national championship but you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the national championship last year like you're that close so I'm saying we just like work harder that's that's kind of coach makes of saying you know nobody cares just work harder like those you know we'll play Georgia it's the same thing yeah last last play you know they went on the win in 90 so we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season I think we'll be fine how frustrating is that you're that close against the last two national title uh of course as you know it's frustrating but you can't change the outcome you can't really do other one uh dwell on it you just gotta you know come back and work harder do things better than you did last year and hopefully the outcome will change as that is you get older you kind of learn and I thought I was working hard and then you always find out there's a little more you could have been doing yeah definitely I mean that's how that's what growing up is basically in college and
I thought freshman year I was working it's hard as I could but not look back at it I really wasn't working hard at all compared to what I'm doing now so just to learn anything 80 85 I mean I can it's all on me I just I think it's a little higher I was just trying to be funny but I mean that's all on me I just got to run harder in shape I think I think I definitely can last I was just you know we got to get the young guys to come along with us we can't play 50 snaps again that's just too much on our bodies uh just everybody like online D line we gotta get those younger guys to play you know get that pieces on the D line and online and everywhere else so we can last that long run
uh yeah I did unless we were like winning by like a line uh I thought like there are no moments you know I can go sit down or something but we're playing them big games like you know Notre Dame too or North those kind of games of course I want to be because I know I can contribute and I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I get the job done. Oh yeah definitely K-Mac is a K-Mac's animal y'all you haven't really seen it yet but in practice he shows all the time he's just he's just he's growing right now he has a work I think he just has to get you know in the playbook things like that you got to rub up the exact same size listen you're both listen six three you're three twenty seven he's three twenty six yeah he's I kind of look at him like my my junior but you know K-Mac he's gonna be a great player he's got to develop more and getting to play. So really a lot on you older guy there's that large group of young guys and then there's the seniors in the back is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys along as well yeah definitely we got to be leaders um like I say we got to have them play this year we can't just play all the snaps they got to get in there
and get some work and we got to get them right during the all season so they can play and I just play they want to like contribute like make plays tackles sex. It seems like these guys get bigger each one first from the class because they're bigger bigger those guys kind of those are kind of why you want to solve the first. Yeah they're definitely some big dudes and they all work hard I'm really seeing much of something day two when I'm passing on but throughout the workouts they've been working hard you know they they're determined to I'd say that and it looks like they're ready to work and make them. I'm pretty sure this does it feels like there's a lot of great defenses that you have big athletic defensive tactics who can eat up space but also move you know right there is that because I have an environment maybe for great defense to have guys like you that have some balls but also a great feat. I think that is definitely I think if you look at the last couple national championship winners like team of North they didn't know they got two good
detacled two athletic detacles look at Georgia two athletic detacters so I think that's definitely neat if you want to go on that big run and beat those big teams. If you think about this they're modified by the defense attackers like what's Georgia Jordan Davis and Jeff Carter let's miss again it's Chris Jenkins. Couple more questions. You understand because you play it but I feel like some time I don't know are people realizing how important defense tackles are a little bit more than they used to. I think so I think they're starting to develop to develop more and more of these like freakiest detacles. Yeah like in the combine just now you see in like those guys they're moving four to four seven eights and things like that so we'll see. And when you think when you think about those freakiest out there how do you think you fit into that old of that kind of player. You watch that and say yeah that's me. Yeah definitely I think I'm top notch when it comes to detacles but I don't want to you know get a big head but you know I watch it come on I watch it do the drills. I have tape here you like you're looking my film so I think I'm up there with all
those. Do you become like a artist who comes to the bad end passes the thing away. I mean you're going to bring practice. You're not doing much. I don't remember how many I mean as many as I can have I think I have more than that but I think they're counting. I think they're counting some of them and it's some of them where I like just missed it so but I think we work on drones matching the hand I think that's goes big and what we do is a D line you know just affecting the quarterback is anyway you can it's just great for the defense you know just that little thing covering his eye you know he might throw it a little bit to the left to our player so. So let's something that you really really have to work on. It's one of the things that you've maybe worked on the most during your time here because there are a few guys that I've seen like oh that passed through. We don't have to ask. We kind of kind of expected for this one. I think I just have like
a eye for the ball kind of. I kind of just look at the quarterback and just I see him like load up. I just try to get in his way and sometimes he just throws it to me. I mean they get frustrated but you know we're a team. We're just getting back. I should lot of a lot of different backs man and just learn to grow for them. You got to pick your top three backs and you got to go right now. I don't really have a top three but I'll give you I'll give you one. I would say say quan Gibbs and I like McCaffrey. Auto he was injured this year. I like McCaffrey. Best back in this draft. I'll lead that up to y'all. That's y'all decision. Playing well. How are what I'm going to remember most. We're a Howard man. He's just such a great leader. Such a great leader man. It's just like
in moments where you know usually a lot of players they fold man. He was just always calm and relax man. He just the leader that he was man. That's one thing I'm going to remember about him. Yeah he's shoot. He's going to be really good man. He's on Coastal lock. I think he got the transfer in as well from West Virginia. Just that one two punch with them both as well. They're going to be really good backs and so James people's man. He's smart. The way that he goes about his business man. He's mature and so man. He's growing you know just as a person and as a player and so man. Yeah definitely Ohio State you know that running back room is in great hands. I'm looking at the U.S. spotting. Yeah coach Coach Hartline man. He's full of energy man and he's creative as well. You know I'm just learning from him as well. You know I'm trying to run more outside the back field. It was being able to learn from coach Hartline and so he's definitely creative at what he does and he brings a lot of energy to the team as well and so I think that'll do
really good. Just the intensity man and the intensity of the playoffs. Every game man is like the intensity got you know higher and higher and so you know being able I know in the lead it's the same thing even if it's not the playoffs just every every game and the intensity it keeps getting higher and higher and so yeah you just I know you got to bring it you know each and every day and come in and work just like Ohio State you know I definitely feel like Ohio State they definitely do a good job of preparing us for that you know I just remember even before going through this process I'll talk to a lot of players before then and they told me a lot of just about how much Ohio State prepared them you know for the NFL and so yeah yeah I know I took a couple days off after the national championship and then shoot right after that I'm writing sample Florida and I'm right to it and so yeah I think while trained I trained at your morph performance I think
it's called the House of Athlete or the Compound now they did a good job man they're just bringing us in and the way they went about training us man they did a really good job. The Bucking Nears know I haven't. Tampa, Tampa nice this is a nice city man really nice. Yeah the 40 to broad and avert. Yeah yeah no man it's really all about technique and then it's about mine said as well and so I say you know it's for the love of my brother it's for the love of Will Howard it's for the love of the receivers who I got on the perimeter just making sure you know first of all my quarterback doesn't get sacked and I I told Will I think it was before the first game I was like I got your brother it's I said man I'm not gonna let you get hit you know and so I don't know if I don't know if I
gave up a sack I'm not sure that but I know if I did I haven't given up too many and so man it's for the love of my brother's though man making sure the ball get in their hands you know the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed in my game you can't really work on this you know in all season I feel like it's more so you know you got to put the pads on you got to go through some inside run you know maybe it's really just continuing run through tackles and so that's I feel like that's one of the areas in my game you know I want to continue to get better I feel like I did a good job of that my senior year and so I just want to continue to build on that yes I did yes I did uh I did me with um new Orleans as well um I never got that comparison actually um I know I know I'm a Camera sure yeah man I have a Camera great great back man um just what he does and knows 101 matchups he's dangerous man and he's so smooth he's so smooth as well I'm not going
like he's smooth yeah um inside zone from stack being able to hit that thing downhill and I say the next one it's probably just an option route out of the backfield you know and man and man coverage you're getting on that line backer and so yeah I say the man the biggest thing is the way that he carries himself man in the way that man um he approaches the game he comes in with the mindset you know he's going to work every single week you know every practice you know he's working hard you know um even shoot I don't know every good I think he had every game was a good game for him man and so but still man he always has the mentality the mindset that you know he's going to come in each and every day he's going to continue to work and get better man and so he's
definitely man he's going to be a special player man he really is I know you're like on your last game yeah I'm starting to know some injuries man a lot of ups and downs man it's just how you respond to adversity and I feel like that's something that God has definitely helped me to do better is just um and I have something to lean on now you know I remember before I met him you know going through those adversity I had nothing to run to you know you can run to people but they still can't it's not too much they can't truly help you you know I feel like you know I feel like the only person that can truly help you is your relationship with Jesus Christ and so being able to lean on him you know he gives you in those moments where it's tough you know where it's slow and um when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about um he gives you he gives you that peace and comfort you know um even in those moments man where it's so hard that you can't you can't explain it's like man I'm going through this but like how am I still filled with this internal joy you know
how do I have so much peace in this situation and so that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you and so um um man eight those guys have such a great mentality man I might just really love their mentality especially um Q as well you know I talked about Will Howard his leadership but Quench I'm mentality man um that boy just yeah that boy just gifted you know you see you know sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like you know he should have a negative five yards and as soon as you know it you know he that running through somebody still farming somebody and shoot it's a game of 10 it's uh shoot I think yeah man I think it's just like he's just gifted man to be honest he's just gifted you know he's
he's a big back you know he's strong and so um you know he's he's able to do he's able to do those things and so um yeah man it's definitely you know I look at his game and I want to you know at the same time I want to learn from Quenchon you know I want to look at this game is like man where where can I get better at as well you know that's the type of player I am I'm always looking to get better man I'm always looking to grow as a player Julian San oh yeah he's gonna be a great but he's gonna be a great quarterback man he's so so accurate and so um he's definitely man I know Coach Dez definitely going to get him right just you know um continue to grow as a leader continue to grow as a player and so he's going he's gonna be really good for high state uh he's that I know just the quarterback position um I feel like you know the quarterbacks in the past they've they've definitely been vocal and so I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to um ask Julian San as well it's to be that vocal leader and lead the um and lead the offense and lead the team. Shoot man he has he has a build like JK Dobbins and um I kind of see them you know similar
similarities in their game as well and I know JK Dobbins he was a great running back um I feel like he's not talked about his none um a lot but man his career here you watch his highlights is is great I remember um before I recruit before I committee here I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights like every every um one of his years here like four or five times and so man he was such a great back and um I feel like you know um when I see JK Dobbins when I see um James people I see similarities to both of their games I feel like they play the same and so appreciate
you all I got coming in last year I knew it was all just attack every day really the same way it's taking advantage very well physically how different are you weight wise body wise on that from the year ago um I think I got a lot bigger I'm like 240 you know like 244 right now last year I played it like 236 to 37 what does it feel like a 244 or a belt you feel like almost a different machine out there yeah what's it what does it feel like to be running around out there like you are but with more more back I just feel like I'm like like like like more downhill like stronger like I'm taking all blocks better it's bigger yeah is it daunting uh maybe that's not the correct term but to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year and you played quite a bit last year and stuff what do you have to get straight in your head about being on the field that much more this is got to get ready to just play 30 more snaps so but are you are you how would you
describe how much you're looking forward to it from an eighth standpoint yeah I'm looking forward to it I'm ready for it my I'm ready for it the Texas opener it's a rematch so to speak but it's not really two different teams compared to the last time y'all played and stuff but how's that enhanced this camp for you and this team getting ready for they were an opener of that magnitude yeah with an opener like that we've been um we've been emphasizing it a lot we know we got coming so we know we got to do we're prepared for it I think Riley ready to play right now he he advanced freshman like he ended he in the book he stood in like he advanced and his measurements was crazy like he saw like a saw line to him or like you said you're ready what was that process like during last season could you feel yourself becoming more and more ready yeah because that's pretty much what my role was which is whenever I was needed I had to step up so I feel like that's what built me into me being able to say I'm ready for this year when you say ready is it more a physical thing is it a mental
thing when I say ready I think it's pretty much like everything physically mentally mostly I think I'm there a different is that feeling this year than last year I asked I one more time how different is that responsibility oh I feel like it's a uh it's a way bigger responsibility with me having to step up this year but I kind of go about it the same way like last year I was intentional with everything I did I feel like this year it's gonna be the same thing it's probably a little bit more and what work I say scrub again I say like when you think of me you would think of like a like a bully like a silver bullet I don't really a bully I'm always on the ball that's how
like to play a thing no I ain't got to be my nickname but oh yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah oh think it fit me because I don't know I just like the defense I feel like we got like you said we got a lot of freedom and we moving around a lot a lot of the terms is like no I don't know I don't really not answer that that's okay does it kind of you could so go on your instincts a little bit more baby it's not so thinking of too much I don't even know if I say that because there's a lot of thinking going on but it's like I just like it's deep I like how the three to the defense I like what you got going on uh now I want to be too much sad I was kind of like happy for you yeah that's what you want no no that's my dog I'm gonna say yeah kind of missing a little bit
but yeah I'm happy for you though I don't think go ahead one last but coach days talked a lot about the guys who played some last year but maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for that wasn't maybe your national championship you guys will win your own yeah how much do you feel that as a guy who certainly contributed last year but will be in this bigger role and along with some of your your classmates yeah I do feel like um yeah I do feel like I did win a nati last year but like you said my role wasn't same as how's gonna be this year so yeah I definitely want to want to go get another one experienced that like feeling maybe on the field a lot more place listen great oh Bill thank you very much thank you so I feel like I kind of have a lot of leaders on the D line at the D in position so we kind of all kind of just kind of talk to each other um it's good competitive we love it we all competitive people we all love to fish
each other and I feel like the best side of all this feel like we all just kind of bounce off each other and see what one person does and we kind of build it into our actual box and we all kind of just kind of build one great thing one okay do you have a role last year when you got to get the shot at full back in the boat and uh did they approach you that idea or two coach do you hear checks all yourers not me okay so I definitely did it in high school I was full back in a little bit of tidan so I feel like it kind of saw what I could do there in coach Wilson honestly you love watching it too before he left and uh feel like you playing that seed in coach day's head and uh coach day kind of just went for it and uh tried to do the best I could do is that continuing now? you got anything in the spring? new playbook I did not know you got that far um I like to think myself as a football player I can really play any position on the field you need me to just give me a weaker two to learn it and kind of perfect it and uh try to do
live that for you. Kid Jack you the same thing oh yeah breathlings that's why kids is talking to coach Johnson on Tuesday about some of the conversations and sort of saw you and you got out to have some conversations after JT and Jack decided to come back just got a way into those we were expecting and and how did that help you maybe get the right mindset I guess. Um definitely kind of seeing it all the way through if you like uh people kind of just see what happened and they don't know everything that goes into it how long the season is now what you got to do to prepare for and what happened in all that time from here to to this so uh I feel like we definitely just coached in me kind of connected and we kind of just talks man-to-man and uh he kind of just sat straight to me and I feel like we kind of both are good on the game they can make each other better every day and we got the four best Dn's five best Dn's honestly in college football and we're going to be one of the best D lines in college football. I don't know how you feel like a better player today at any work in this season? um I feel like I've taken big steps in my roles uh just being responsible and being more of a
leader and uh kind of stepping up and taking a step to kind of get out there more on the team and kind of bring people in and uh feel like we're kind of helping out more. How do you record in when it passes to the TKFC? Does that sound ridiculous? I mean it sounds bizarre but I mean the season goes by so fast already so when you're kind of like week ten in you're like wow it's already week ten so now it's kind of gives you more time to kind enjoy it and kind of savor it because you've come already here for a really good refreshment for the face crazy. But you don't want to spend all your powder in the first first month of the year right? Oh yeah. There is a that pace yourself that with I mean there's a mindset that I didn't have the season. Yeah definitely definitely going to have to have the mental stability to handle all those weeks and all those practices. How much has Larry talked to you guys about the good? Last question right here. 2016, 2017, four and a five two five two ones. So no just no much he talked about that. I mean he doesn't have to talk about it. We know about it. You see it in every day, we watch the film. You see them all working together. We know what it could be. We know we could become. So we know we we're right at the same
growth of right place at the right time and God wanted us to be here and he knew we wanted us all to come together and kind of play together and be able to bounce off and just perfect our craft together and I feel like we all are just great individuals and we come together at some especially. We plan as much so I just wanted to get like more experience under my belt so I can know bring younger guys with me because I've been through a lot. One of those younger guys we're seeing is the first time it's hurt all of your life. What have you seen from Will? I don't know, I actually don't really know what we all forgot about him because he was hurt. Now he's running, you know, almost a second man out of the hand. You tied. What have you seen from the beginning? Will is a workhorse. He goes, stay quiet. You go and work hard. That's what I love about him. He focuses, he don't really talk much. He's going to get the job done, do a job right. Rarely has any mistakes. What would be a successful season? A national championship? Ring, win, all the games we don't want to lose anything. We got a mindset that we can't beat.
We just got to go show it. That mindset different. It seems like you guys expect a national championship every year. This year, even more so, you guys have all come back for this. You guys have all decided, like, the numbers are not put. Does that just keep feeling different? Or is there not really any difference? It's just the same work. It's definitely a difference. Everyone working harder. We noticed our last run. Most of us don't have any years after this. So we got to go bigger, go home, then. We're not trying to go home. It's finished big. We know what you guys think of Michigan. But when you look at what they did, they won the national championship and you guys took them down to the final minute. Right? You know what I mean? You were right there. Something goes a little different. You guys could have won that game against them. Does that tell you anything about like that, hey, you guys want to win a national championship? But you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the national championship last year, like you're that close. So I'm saying, we just work harder. That's kind of coach makes a saying, you know, nobody cares, just work harder.
Those, you know, when we played Georgia, the same thing. Last play, you know, they went on the win in the 90s. So we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season. I think we'll be fine. How frustrating is that? You're that close against the last two national titles. Of course, as you know, it's frustrating. But you can't change the outcome. You can't really dwell on it. You just got to, you know, come back and work harder. Do things better than you did last year and hopefully the outcome will change. Is that as you get older, you kind of learn. I thought I was working harder than you always find out there's a little more than you could have been doing. Yeah, definitely. I mean, that's how that's what growing up is basically in college. I thought, Frank, from here, I was working as hard as I could, but now I look back at it. I really wasn't working hard at all, comparing to what I'm doing now. So just to learn anything. But the stamina is a 16. And the answer to like, what do you need it to be to be your best? Uh, it is at 75. 80, 85. I mean, I can, it's all on me. I just, I think it's a little higher. I was just trying to be funny, but I mean, it's all on me.
I just got to run harder. Get the shape. It's the idea of a potential to succeed in a seven-year-old team. I mean, I'm sad about that idea. There's a making nervous about, can you ask that long? Do you really have worries? I'm just worried about that. I think, I think we, I definitely can last. I was just, you know, we got to get the young guys that come along with us. We can't play 50 snaps a game. It's just too much on our bodies. Just everybody. Like, O-line, D-Line. We got to get those younger guys to play, you know. Get that pieces on the D-Line and O-Line and everywhere else. So we can last that long. Speaking of the light playing, let me snap it. If you like playing that movie, snap it in. Not a year, development. I don't know if any of us were really expected to play that movie. Ah, yeah, I did. Unless we were like winning by like, a lot. I thought like, there are no mom's, you know, I can go sit down or something. But we're playing them big games like, you know, Notre Dame, too, on those kind of games. Of course, I want to be, because I know I can contribute. And I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I can get the job done.
What stands out about Kaden McDonald? Is he got the key? Have you guys ever seen him? Oh, yeah, definitely. K-Mac is a K-Mac's animal. Y'all, you haven't really seen it yet, but in practice, he shows all the time. He's just, he's growing right now. He has the work ethic. He just has to get, you know, in the playbook and things like that. You guys are about the exact same size. Listen, you're both listening to 6th or your 327, he's 326. Yeah, he's a kind of look at him like my junior, but, you know, K-Mac, he's going to be a great player. He's got to develop more and get into playbook. So really a lot on you older guys, there's that large group of young guys. And then there's these seniors in the back. Is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys? Yeah, definitely. We got to be leaders. Like I say, we got to have them play this year. We can't just play all the snaps. They got to get in there and get some work. And we got to get them right during the all season. So they can play and not just play. They want to like contribute like make plays, tackle sex. It stays out of work this freshman. Thank you. It seems like these guys get big.
Each one of the freshmen class is a bigger, bigger. The most guys kind of, it doesn't kind of allow you in the cell. The first. Yeah, there definitely some big dudes. And they all work hard. I've only seen much of some day too when I'm not passing on. But throughout the workouts, they've been working hard, you know, they're determined to, I could say that. It looks like they're ready to work with me. How important this goes? It feels like there's a lot of great defenses that you have big, athletic defensive tactics that you can eat up space. But also, you know, right? That is that. Is that an inquire maybe for a great defense to have guys like you that have some balls, but also a great feature? I think that is definitely. I think if you look at the last couple of national champions and winners, like see my North, they didn't know they got two that, uh, detackled to athletic detackles. Look at Georgia. Two athletic detackers. So I think that's definitely need if you want to go on that big run and beat those big teams. If you think about this, they will define by the defense attack. Like, what's Georgia?
Jordan Davis and Jay. What's Michigan is Chris Jenkins. Couple more questions. You might as well tell me how, I mean, you understand. I think it's because you play it, but I feel like some time I don't know. Are people realizing how important defense tackles are? A little bit more than they used to? I think so. Uh, I think they're starting to develop to develop more and more of these like freakiest detackles. Yeah. Like in the combine, just now, you see in like those guys, they're moving four to four, seven, eights and things like that. So we'll see. And when you think about those freakish attack attacks, how do you think you fit into that old of that kind of player? You watch that and say, yeah, that's me. Yeah, definitely. I think I'm top notch when it comes to detackles, but I don't want to, you know, get a big head, but you know, I watch the comma and I watch the dude do the drills. I have tape here. Like, look at my film. So I think I'm up there with all the time. Do you become like an artist who comes to the bad guy passes the way he's going? When you're going, you're not doing as much a weapon on the weapon.
How do you work on that? Do you have like an old one, Marns? I don't remember how many bad lines you're going to have. You have a gold line. Five. How many do you want to have? I mean, as many as I can have, I think I have more than that. But I think they've counted. I think they've counted some of them. And it's some of them where I like just missed it. So, but I think we work on drills matching the hand. I think that's goes big and what we do is a D line, you know, just affecting the quarter of the against any way you can. It's just great for the defense. You know, just that little thing covering his eye, you know, he might throw it a little bit to the left to our players. So, it's something that you really, really have to work on. You're trying to add what you're going to have to do. It's really, that's one of the things that you've maybe worked on the most. You can bring your time here because there are a few guys that I've seen. Like, oh, that pastor just takes a good look. We don't have that. It's a style of just kind of expected. I think I just have like an eye for the ball kind of. I kind of just look at the quarterback and just, I see him like load up. I just try to get in his ways. And sometimes he just throws it to me. I don't know.
I'm here at T. Do you want to be a high state quarterback? You're going to be a bad dumb fastest. I mean, they get frustrated by, you know, we're a team, you know, we're just getting better. Yeah. Watch a lot of different backs, man. They just learn to grow for them. You're going to pick your top three backs. You got to go right now. Two. I don't really have a top three, but I'll give you, I'll give you one. I would say, say, Juan Gibbs and I like McCaffrey. Auto. He was injured this year. I like McCaffrey. I appreciate it. Who's the best back in this drive? Best back in this drive. I lead out of the yard. That's y'all. That's y'all decision. Playing well with Howard. What I'm going to remember most. We're a Howard, man. He's just such a great lead. Such a great leader, man. It's just like in moments where, you know, usually a lot of players they fold, man. He was just always calm and relaxed, man. He just the leader that he was, man.
That's one thing I'm going to remember about him. Yeah. He's shoot. He's going to be really good, man. He's on Coastal like. I think he got the transfer in as well from West Virginia. Just that one two punch with them both as well. They're going to be really good backs. And so James people's, man. He's smart the way that he goes about his business, man. He's mature. And so man, he's growing, you know, just as a person and as a player. And so man, yeah, definitely Ohio State, you know, that running back room is in great hands. That was right. I'm looking at the U.S. Body. I'm just talking about his personality. And I'm just trying to keep that open. It's all the same way. Yeah. Coach, Coach Hartley, man. He's full of energy, man. And he's creative as well. You know, I'm just learning from him as well. You know, I'm trying to run more outside the backfield. It was being able to learn from Coach Hartley. And so he's definitely creative at what he does. And he brings a lot of energy to the team as well. And so I think that would do really good. Straight away. Is that a way to play off on the right? That's what we want to do.
What strength does it just not help? Just the intensity, man. And the intensity of the playoffs. Every game, man. It's like the intensity got, you know, higher and higher. And so, you know, being able, I know in the lead, it's the same thing. Even if it's not the playoffs. It's just every game and the intensity keeps getting higher and higher. And so, yeah, you just, I know you got to bring it, you know, each and every day, and come in and work just like Ohio State. You know, I definitely feel like Ohio State. They definitely do a good job of preparing us for that. You know, I just remember even before going through this process, I'll talk to a lot of players before then. And they told me a lot of just about how much Ohio State prepared them, you know, for the NFL. And so, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I know I took a couple of days off after the National Championship. And then, shoot, right after that, I'm writing sample Florida and I'm right to it. And so, yeah, I think while I trained, I trained at YoMurf Performance.
I think it's called the House of Athlete or the Compound now. They did a good job, man. They're just bringing us in and the way they went about training us, man. They did a really good job. And then, what do you think of the Bucking Nears? No, I haven't. Do you think it's a city Tampa? Tampa, Tampa, nice. It's a nice city, man. Really nice. The 40 to broad and the vert. You've been on races in Austin, Walker. Do you speak to your mentality of like when you've got a linebacker or something in the shaft? Yeah. Yeah, no, man. It's really all about technique. And then, it's about mindset as well. And so, I say, you know, it's for the love of my brother. It's for the love of Will Howard. It's for the love of the receiver. It's who I got on the perimeter. Just making sure, you know, first of all, my quarterback doesn't get sacked. And I told Will, I think it was before the first game. I was like, I got your brother. It's, I said, man, I'm not going to let you get hit. You know, and so I don't know if I don't know if I gave up a sack.
I'm not sure that, but I know if I did, I haven't given up too many. And so, man, it's for the love of my brother's, though, man, making sure the ball get in their hands, you know, the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed. You had to hit the practice field later today. What is something you've been working on right now? In my game. You can't really work on this, you know, in all season, I feel like it's more so, you know, you got to put the pads on. You got to go through some inside run, you know, maybe it's really just continuing to run through tackles. And so that's, I feel like that's one of the areas in my game. You know, I want to continue to get better. I feel like I did a good job of that in my senior year. And so I just want to continue to build on that. Yes, I did. Yes, I did. So people say you look like, how long is it going to take to get back to Paris? I did meet with New Orleans as well. I never got that comparison. Actually, I know I have a Camera. Sure, yeah, man, I have a Camera great, great back, man. Just what he does and those 101 matchups, he's dangerous, man.
And he's so smooth. He's so smooth as well. I'm not going to lie. He's smooth. So, did you play for my first play in the tournament? Yeah. Inside zone from stack, being able to hit that thing downhill. And I'll say the next one is probably... Just an option out of the backfield. And man coverage, you're getting on that line backer. And so... Yeah, I say the man, the biggest thing is the way that he carries himself, man. And the way that man, he approaches the game. He comes in with the mindset, he's going to work every single week. Every practice, he's working hard. Even shoot him. I don't know. I think he had a... Every game was a good game for him, man. But still, man, he always has the mentality to mindset that. He's going to come in each and every day, he's going to continue to work and get better, man.
And so, he's definitely, man. He's going to be a special player, man. He really is. Man, a lot of ups and downs, man. It's just how you respond to adversity. And I feel like that's something that God has definitely helped me to do better. It's just, I'm not having something to lean on now. You know, I remember before I met him, you know, going through those adversity, I had nothing to run to. You know, you can run to people, but they still can't. It's not too much. They can't truly. I'm not going to be able to do that. I'm not going to be able to do that. I'm not going to be able to do that. It's not too much. They can't truly help you. You know, I feel like, you know, I feel like the only person that can truly help you is your relationship with Jesus Christ. And so, being able to lean on him, you know, he gives you, in those moments, where it's tough, you know, where it's low. And when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about, he gives you that peace and comfort. You know, even in those moments, man, where it's so hard that you can't, you can't explain. It's like, man, I'm going through this. through this but like how am I still filled with this internal joy? You know how do I have so much
peace in this situation? And so that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you. And so... Um, man, those guys have such a great mentality man. Am I just really loved that mentality. Especially Q as well. You know I talked about Will Howard, his leadership, but Quincham mentality man. That boy just, yeah that boy just gifted. You know you see you know sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like you know he should have a negative five yards and then as soon as you know it you know he that running through somebody stiff arm and somebody and she would just gain a 10. And so... I think... Yeah man I think it's just like he's just gifted man to be honest. He's just gifted. You know he's he's a big back you know he's strong and so um you know he's he's able to do he's
able to do those things and so um yeah man it's definitely you know I look at his game and I want to you know at the same time I want to learn from Quincham you know I want to look at this game is like man where can I get better at as well you know that's the type of player I am. I'm always looking to get better man I'm always looking to grow as a player. What are your last two tweets? Julien San. Oh yeah he's gonna be a great but he's gonna be a great quarterback man he's so so accurate and so um he's definitely man I know Coach Dez is definitely going to get him right just you know um container grow as a leader container grow as a player and so he's going he's gonna be really good for a high state. He's that I know just the quarterback position um I feel like you know the quarterbacks in the past they've they've definitely been vocal and so I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to um ask them Julien San as well it's to be that vocal leader and lead the um and lead to offense and lead to steam. Shoot man he has he has a build like JK Dobbins and um I kind of see them you know similar similarities in their game as well and I know JK Dobbins he was a great running back um I feel
like he's not talked about his none um a lot but man his career here you watch his highlights is is great I remember um before I recruit before I committee here I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights like every every um one of his years here like four or five times and so man he was such a great back and um I feel like you know um when I see JK Dobbins when I see um James people I see similarities to both of their games I feel like they play the same and so I appreciate you all you have to go.
Zachary did really the same way. Van Viery rep. Physically, how different are you weight wise body wise on that from the year ago? Oh I think I got a lot bigger I'm like 240 you know like 244 right now last year I played it like 236 to 37. What does it feel like at 244 or bail you feel like almost a different machine out there? Yeah what does it feel like to be run around out there like you are but with more uh more back I just feel like I'm like like like like more downhill like stronger like I'm taking all the blocks better it's a big move. Is it daunting uh maybe that's not the correct term but to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year and you played quite a bit last year and stuff. What do you have to get straight in your head about being on the field that much more? I just got to get ready to just play 30 more snaps so. But are you are you how would you describe how much you're looking forward to it from an 8-stand point? Yeah I'm looking forward to it.
I'm ready for it. My I'm ready for it. The Texas opener is a rematch so to say but it's not really two different teams compared to the ones that I'm going to play and stuff. How has that enhanced this camp for you and this team getting ready for the where an opener of that magnitude? Yeah with an opener like that we've been um we've been emphasizing it a lot and we know we got coming so we know we got to do we've been preparing for it. How are you guys probably working to play right now? Um I think Riley ready to play right now he he advanced freshman like he ended he in the book he stood in like he advanced and his measurements was crazy like he saw like the saw line too. Orbel you said you're ready right? You know you're ready. What was that process like during last season could you feel yourself becoming more and more ready for whatever the team needed for you? Yeah because that's pretty much what my role was just whenever I was needed I had to step up so I feel like that's what built me into me being able to say I'm ready for this year. When you say ready is it more a physical thing? Is it a mental thing?
When I say ready I think it's pretty much like everything physically, mentally, mostly I think I'm there. A different is that feeling this year is analyzed. Oh I asked the one more time. How different is that responsibility? That's just the emotional stuff all that. And it was last year you knew you were a role player. Um I feel like it's a uh it's a way bigger responsibility with me having to step up this year but I kind of go about it the same way like last year I was attention over everything I did. I feel like this year it's going to be the same thing. It's probably a little bit more. And what work? How's everybody working? Uh I say describe like now I say like when you think of me you would think of like a like a bullet like a silver bullet like I'm really a bullet. I'm always on the ball.
That's how I like to play and think. You like what I'm worried about? No I ain't ain't got to be my nickname but Oh yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah Um think it fit me because I don't know I just like the defense. I feel like we got like you said we got a lot of freedom and we moving around a lot a lot of the terms is like no I don't know I don't really not answer that. That's okay does it? You can go on your instincts a little bit more maybe and it's not so thinking of too much. I don't even know if I say that because there's a lot of thinking going on but it's like I just like it's defense I like how it's pretty different I like what you got going on. What was it sad when CJ left the ring? Yeah. Uh now I wanted to my sad I was kind of like happy for you. Like yeah that's what you want. You want to listen to that? No.
All right. No that's my dog. I'm going to say yeah kind of missing a little bit but yeah I'm happy for him. All right well don't thank you. Go ahead one last question. Coach Daze talked a lot about the guys who played some last year but maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for that wasn't maybe your national championship you guys will win your own. Yeah. How much do you feel that is a guy who certainly contributed last year but will be in this bigger role and along with some of your classmates? Yeah I do feel like um yeah I do feel like I did win a national but like you said my role wasn't same as how's going to be this year so yeah I definitely want to go get another one experienced that like feeling maybe on the field a lot more place. That's it. Great. Oh Bill thank you very much. Championship in Nican you know before and everything like that and also to get your teeth knocked in you know first game and you know can't have that happen because then you know really doesn't mean anything and so just the constant mindset to continually get better has been on the forefront of my mind and forefront of anyone here you can ask.
Yeah. Yeah I know we look at the class stats every now and then I can be like oh man they're gone but no it's been it's been good I mean the guys who are still here I'm as I have definitely kind of bonded together pretty good so. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. 21 class obviously. Today's three game was the same. Yeah. You guys still have this in the middle of the day. Yeah I mean you know Mark came in the other day he's like in that class 2021 best class ever and like yeah sure okay you know I can't really can't really even you know just sitting doing that you know don't have much left but um uh yeah I mean to do what we can and do what we can for this team has been really important for all of us and I think um us now realizing where the veterans you know like where the old guys now in the group has been um kind of strange at least to begin with you know because you go from um all those guys you like Donnie and Josh and those guys and all of sudden it's Sunday we have a team meeting after the um like the
celebration in the shoe and all of a sudden the next day there's gone and you know it's it's just very different so I think us being able to step up as you know leaders and as as vets to help bring out you know along the team our units and um this program has been really important. What are you doing overall? Two more questions just a try um but then you and your office line pressure first year Luke said that Jake has been in the bus so far he didn't take too long to go on but he's playing on somebody who went through that would have been impressed by Jake coming in and taking him back and after what he didn't tell him. No it could spend doing really well I mean I could go as he goes to work um he's extremely athletic extremely flexible um you know he's a young kid obviously he's a lot of a lot of development a lot of he's a little adversity at all of us do but I think he's going through that right now but he's been coming out on the better end of it so far and excited to see what he can do because he's very impressive at this young stage. What is your overall level of excitement just to be back with the rest of this year off
to why you're with you guys having something just good to back with. Yeah extremely excited I mean um trying to just build that culture back up again you know like what we had last year uh I we're trying to do a little stuff here and there and I can know I think we're going to Rayres of barbecue I think tomorrow uh so shout out Rayres but uh um but yeah I just trying to uh get that brotherhood back get that you know that oblock spirit back sure it's coming soon um hopefully um but uh just to kind of get those uh not those same faces but those same kind of mindsets back and our our group is important right now and it's been fun to meet new guys from different backgrounds and stuff like that um and try to figure out how to you know build that and mend that together it's been pretty cool. Now as you are one of the most experienced veterans on this team how much do you feel like you have to be a leader for as team as here? Yeah for sure I mean I think that comes um it's obviously I don't feel like it's natural to anyone to immediately step up and that's something I've been working on every day
and talking to God about um but I obviously understand that and that's something I want to continue to work on I want to be able to um be a guy that people can fall back on and like coach just saying before like we're gonna have highs and lows but the great players the ones being set our clocks to and I kind of want that's my goal is to be one of those people that you can do that um and I think for especially a very new set of eyes um in the woody um not only coaches but players um I think it's very important to kind of keep that steady um mindset and I think for me learning how to be a leader has been important just to not be too hard on myself but also not let myself kind of slack off in some departments is trying to keep um steady. Yes your story itself though is testament of what it means to like for perseverance and stuff too though right? Carson I mean you know what that's uh that's gonna have to stand up from somebody to say that right? I mean just yeah what do you what do you think you've shown more than anything else in every guard? Yeah I mean I've been blessed you know I've you know I've been blessed with a lot of adversity
I think that's definitely made me better on the back end and um you know coach David always talks about it and you don't you know great leaders aren't you know they can show it but you know a lot of people can show a lot a lot of people can just talk about it um but to be about it is important and I think um to be enough went through a lot of that adversity I went through a lot of that stuff and um my testament you know has been um written in an interesting way but I think for me to take that next step is really important for not only for this team but for myself personally you're doing good. Yeah he's been doing great I mean he came in um big freaking strong uh he's fun to be in the weight room with uh he's uh he's kind of quiet like that's kind of my first impression on him but he's actually pretty funny dude he he and his dad come over and they kind of joke around and he's so he's been doing a great job all right he's been doing a great job for his size he has like freaky athletic feet like I watch him do the ladders and that's a lot of massive overrun on those things you know doing a little itch shuffle but I mean he's he was killing
it and so he's been doing a great job I can't wait to see um how he kind of continues to develop throughout this summer and throughout this fall camp. First thing is somebody that's why I know Iron Buckhead what it is to be to arm that's why. Yeah Piggy's been doing great I mean he um he stepped up Piggy yeah yeah everyone refers to his Piggy is his username one time nice everyone to speak but anyway um you know Pig's been doing great he uh he's been able to step up and kind of bring around along those younger guys um you know everyone's kind of trying to figure out their their new roles and I think he's been uh he's been doing a lot of things big body guy that he catched a bar can run between the tacos um his feet are quicker than what you think for a big guy he got really good feet we get balanced so that's what makes him good that's what I saw him you would you is that a comment for a bigger back like you have this personality right now I see it's probably a good way to bring back some tight end back well tight end back ground now I don't know many with that type of back ground but when he's
high school we see they try to play as an H bat well really good for it. When you look in the portal for you know running action we want to try to recruit running backs does it matter to you if you have two different styles of running backs maybe one guy can you sort of think better one guy can use your other is it you know he'll just take the best running back you can find you know I want to have different yeah I want different styles you know what I'm saying man you know you know what I'm saying man you know what I'm saying guys with different strings uh whether they're big guys small guys talls catchers in between the type of runners uh no you know I don't want to take the same thing you know different different different backs. You guys know will and clinch aren't there a lot of them. You know I have my own opinion on the size they've been becoming the brands uh you know I had Jordan James at the world and I he's my brand zone running show yards and professional in probably way to two ten or twelve five which
is not very big but they ain't got to do with them and some guys you got to know so sticking down his own and you play with a lot of pressure down here running so that could be CJA that could be James or it could be the freshman go Jackson you know it's just who has a nose for getting his on you know that's that's where I'm going over here. You don't have to be six two. No just because you're being there I'll make you pop. We knew we could obviously you know freshman running back coming in about what I said here but what do you need to see from a freshman to feel comfortable with them playing. So in the first day you will be on the ball. Whether whether they do they're little small detail. Take care of the ball. The second thing will be how good they pass for them because it's the hardest thing for high school backs because they're not you was during high school but you have to understand the pass for them by all their falls on who you mean. So like they said I'm in touch with my heart so that's why I need to see first from
everything. Yes I will understand the weaknesses. You feel comfortable with with O and and I say where they're at or at least you know where their time lies. Yeah I think they're going to be fine. Like I said I tell all the young guys it's a marathon that was fun. The first day of first you've been in the arm and spot on special teams. Know you earn spot on special teams then you earn the right to be a buck out. So get that down and feel so I think they're turning the right direction. First practice. Not it wasn't mad. Some to build off for them. I couldn't have stuffed the work on them. Have you seen some of the younger guys in your room develop? I think about like Etrick Houston is coming in this year seeing him working with you guys. Joshua MacKinnon, how's he coming along? I feel like they're definitely picking up quick. I mean I was in their shoes one time and I had Zach Harrison, Javonte and Tyler Friadell in front of me so I thought I'm just
trying to be kind of one of those peers that they work for me and kind of just giving them the steps to get there and I feel like they're definitely picking up quick and they definitely need to be one of the great rushmen. I feel like all the camps I've definitely gotten a big course flirt and I love that. I ask Coach J4 I love getting more reps because I just like protecting my craft. So I mean some people may not need it. Some people need it but I mean it's like he has made reps like he is. I mean for me it's always just kind of getting my little details perfectly like my steps my footing kind of just perfecting my toolbox is what we call it my craft and just trying to be a like a whenever every place we try to do.
Yeah definitely just getting stronger faster everything all the above but one of my big things being leader and kind of just not trying to look still look up to Jack and JT and kind of have my own kind of leadership and be able to bring people into so I feel like kind of have a lot of leaders on the B-line at the B-In position so we kind of all kind of just count off the children and others. I'm competitive and we love it. We all competitive people we all love to push each other and I feel like the best set of all just we all just kind of bounce it off each other and see what one person does and we kind of split it into our toolbox and we all kind of just kind of build one great thing. So you were going to last year and you got to get the shot and put a full bag in the boat and did they put you that idea in a two-coach film? I mean I didn't come up out because you're a JT, so I hear it's lobby.
Oh yeah. It gives you a test deck. So I definitely did it in high school. I was pulled back and a little bit of tidied in. So I feel like it kind of saw what I could do there in Coach Wilson. Honestly he loved watching it too before he left and I feel like he planned that seat and Coach Day's head and Coach Day kind of just went for it and tried to do the best I could to do it. Is that continuing now? I mean, I'm just thinking of the screen. New playbook I did not know yet. Yeah, we've got that far. Yeah, good day. People have tough concept to do. Yeah, look at that. Um, I like to think myself as a football player. I can really play any position on the field you need me to just give me a week or two to learn it and kind of perfect it and I'll try to do my best for you. Kid Jack, do the same thing. Oh yeah. Don't like what you're talking about. Graphically, that's why. Cadence is talking to Coach Johnson on Tuesday about some of the conversations and sort of saw you and about how to have some conversations after JT and Jack decided to come back. Just got to win into those. We were respected and how did that help you maybe get the right mindset against many of these questions. Um, definitely kind of seeing it all the way through.
I feel like the people kind of just see what happened and they don't know everything that goes into it, how long the season is now, what you got to do to prepare for and what's happening all that time from here to to then. So, uh, I feel like we definitely just coached in me kind of connected. And we kind of just talked man-to-man and uh, he kind of just sent it straight to me and I feel like you kind of both are pretty honest and we know we're making it. We make each other better every day and we got the four best DNs, five best DNs, honestly, in the college football and we're going to be one of the best DLines in college football. How do you feel like the better player today at any work in this season? Well, I feel like I've taken big steps in my roles of just being responsible and being more of a leader and kind of stepping up and taking a step to kind of get out there more on the team and kind of bring people in and I feel like we're kind of helping out more. I, I mean, I'd rather have a chance to see the TKFC. I mean, the things that I mean, the season goes by so fast already. So, when you're kind of like week 10 and you're like wow, it's already week 10.
So now it's kind of, it gives you more time to kind of enjoy it and kind of savor it because you've got your own fun or you feel like refreshments are a slice of creation. But you don't want to spend all your powder for the first month of the year right? Oh yeah. There is a, that pace yourself that, but I mean, there is a mindset that I didn't know the season. Yeah, definitely, definitely going to have that the mental stability to handle all those weeks and all those practices. How much has Larry talked to you guys around the good? Last question right here. He doesn't have to talk about it. We know about it. We've seen it every day. We watch the film. We see them all working together. We know what it could be. We know what we could become. So we know we, we're right at the same, we're at the right place at the right time and God wanted us to be here and he knew we wanted us all to come together and kind of play together and be able to bounce off and just perfect our craft together. And I feel like we all are just great individuals and we come together at something special. How did your expectations, I guess, meet up with how do you feel you've been pulling up to this point of
guess? I feel like I've made the plays that came to me and that's where the Hawking & Control had more opportunities as years progressed and been in spots to be here on the ball. But the expectation was to come here and contribute to the team and try to help find a way to push the team to win games at high level and to be better than they were actually and for me to play better than I was last year. So really just coming to try to grow with myself and with the team. So that was my big goal and I feel like I've done a good job and the team has done a good job progressing through the year and getting better. So yeah, that's all I can say about that. I'm here to the right and then may let it grow. Yeah, I can't stand it right now. Does it feel like like a different season? What does it feel like when you go in to play house? You know, you'll get the goal you wanted necessarily to make your season but here you are. Right? I mean, what is that sense that you have right now? That's different, right? I'm not the regular season.
I mean, everybody wants to say it's a new season in terms of because if everybody's 0-0 right now, when you keep going, if you lose, you're done. But genuinely, that's how you have to play every game. You know, to play every game is your last game. So for me, I don't think it's really any difference. You have to go play at a high level every game that can't be based upon isn't a player. You have to go play every game like this is the same thing. So I would say in terms of that, no, you just have to play the game and play the game this year. What feels different about this defense right now going into this? So you'll feel even more. You know, done by tight, I mean, close together. What was that? I mean, what is your sense of the furtherhoods so to speak of the defense? I feel like we progressed throughout the season. We didn't make a change after game 6 because we lost and we didn't play well at game. And I feel like we'd grow from that and add to a better place. Over these past two weeks, off just realizing, okay, these are the things that we've messed up
throughout the year. These are what we need to face. These are what this team is trying to exploit on us. So just really going back to everything and seeing what we can do better for this kind of game and for the next couple of years. Last couple of questions. Tony, you heard me, what kind of help? How does the Tennessee's wide split with your receivers, in fact, you, as a hundred? I feel like it makes the game more, more, more, one game. I mentioned receivers on DBs at the place at the game than the guys up front. And it makes it, truthfully, like those guys have to do their job and these guys have to do your job. You got to be able to stop the run with the people that you have in the run fit and you have to be able to stop their path with the people that you have out there. So that's what they do and they do it and really lead the way. So it's going to be tough to go in. That's my last joy, Colin, Columbus Dispatch. So the coach knows the time about the speed at which you guys are in the call and the lane. Since it's built for potential visitors and how fast they can play in the call and the player kind of
ends up that gives you just the speed at which they just call in. All right. It allows you to get your cleats in it. And I said earlier just a ability to see the formation and see what keys that you have before the play and have knowledge of your job and not really thinking being able to play in that game during the game is a really big thing. So whenever you can get the call that's faster and play at a high level and play without a bug, that's a really good thing for you team. Caleb, thank you very much. Appreciate you all. Yeah, come on back. Because you're a good coach all year long. Yeah. You're a good coach, yeah. So I definitely didn't in high school. I was pulled back and a little bit tired. So I feel like it kind of saw what I could do there in Coach Wilson. Honestly, he left Washington too before he left. And I feel like he planned that seed and coach Day's head and coach Day kind of just went for it and tried to do the best I could to do it. Executive chin ring now. Anything in the screen? New playbook. I did not know you haven't got that far.
I like to thank myself as a football player. I can really play any position on the field in E-Me 2. Just give me a weaker 2 to learn it and kind of perfect it and I'll try to do my best for you. Kid Jack, you're the same thing. Oh yeah. Don't like football. Graphically, that's why. Caleb is talking to Coach Johnson on Tuesday about some of the conversations and sort of side you and you've got to out to have some conversations after JT and Jack decided to come back. Just want to put a weight into those from your perspective and how did that help you move you good the right mindset I guess we need to do this for him. Um, definitely kind of seeing it all the way through. I feel like people kind of just see what happened and they don't know everything that goes into it. How long the season is now. What you got to do to prepare for and what's happening all that time from here to to then. So I feel like we definitely just coached in me kind of connected and we kind of just talks man-to-man and uh, we kind of just set it straight to me and I feel like we kind of both have been on us. And we know we're making it. Yeah, don't. We're making each other better every day and we got the 4 best Dn's. 5 best Dn's honestly in the college football and we're going to be one of the best D lines
in college football. I mean, you feel like a better player today at any more again this season. Well, I feel like I'm taking big steps in my rules of just being responsible and being more of a leader and kind of stepping up and taking a step to kind of get out there more on the team and kind of bring people in and I feel like I'm kind of helping out more. I didn't break your hand around the past to see what the TKFC is. Zip sound. I mean, it sounds bizarre but I mean, the season goes by so fast already. So when you're kind of like week 10 and you're like, wow, it's already week 10. So now it's kind of, it gives you more time to kind of enjoy it and kind of save for it because I'm already here for you. I'm freshness to the face crazy. Could you know what's good on your powder for the first month of the year, right? Oh yeah. There is that pace yourself, but I mean, there's a mindset. Yeah, definitely. Definitely going to have to have the mental stability to handle all those weeks and all those practices. How much has Larry talked to you guys about like that? Last question right here.
He doesn't have to talk about it. We know about it. We've seen it every day. We watched the film. We see him all working together. We know what it could be. We know we could become. So we know we're right at the same, we're at the right place at the right time. And God wanted us to be here and he knew we wanted us all to come together and kind of play together and be able to bounce off and just perfect our craft together. And I feel like we all are just great individuals and we come together. It's something special. You get like good coaches who believe in you and like they give you the tools to go out there and just play with confidence. You know, not out there doubting those stuff. Like you got your teammates who got your back like my first play when I got a third-tuncy like when DeZel, IGB and Jermaine. Like, first thing they say is like no where you just go out there and play with confidence. You know, you know the tools, it's usual tools. It's just go out there and make a play. And where about a play coming to you? You know, where is your time and show your job? You just do it. And then like, the same goes for you. He gives me, he puts me in a position like like the drills we put in, the work you put in, the one on one, so I'm just going out there and just perform at the highest level. How much better are you right now than maybe last month, a four-spirit record? I mean, I got way better just because I've transitioned a little bit to the inside.
Nick was far so I'm like now I'm actually trying to catch technique and it's it often covers not, it's not always press at the line. So it's like not able to like move my feet, move my hands like see like what I got to do just like just in case I got to go back in corner I can I'm playing off now. I'm very confident out there. Do you think that Nick was a natural fifth of you or have you had the kind of convince yourself to transition around? I mean, I feel like it's natural for me because I feel like me, individually I'm a fast learner, fast learner, like coaches help us like learn fast and like because they're always honest about the techniques and stuff. So you like you play down like you pick up all the things and then like when we get out here they coach us to like the techniques so we used to go out there and play like fast spot and it would have like reversitility to be able to go out there and just compete. Is that where you kind of stuff, just spring or do you get kind of mounted? So I've really been stuck there this spring a little bit right whenever you get it's like other things I just bounce out there every once in a while just like have just have fun see if I still got it every once in a while so it's as good as going to compete at most spots.
You mentioned the technique what technique you know tips and things that you had to pick up and learn from what you're from. I mean this is always like he always because what coaches ask me hands like see it you see it move your feet and then get your hands with your hands on the mat so it's like when you get like when you out there you're able to like process like the way the receiver comes off the ball looking at the hips and seeing like the way he moves and are you able to pick up like the row constant you can get out of that like so it's being like under coach walls or me like as a player and just like him breaking out football to you like one on one it's like very been efficient. What was the hardest part of making that transition from outside that sense? I really say like the corner you got to cover two you cover three you get to cover one us like it's easy but you got nickel now so many responsibilities you gotta see like the row concepts you gotta be able to process like diagnosed rows faster than what you gotta do by corner and just be able to like everything's quid like a transition you gotta like you gotta gotta move fast you gotta learn to move fast it's like game recognition
where you think maybe from the most since you got it I think you got to go to my home team. I would definitely say I'd definitely say yes because how you get to like college it's a little bit different in high school we don't got to worry about things like that when I want you get to like college and school like this like your recognition of plays and like you'll know your jobs the way like the coverage is supposed to be played I understand all your teammates are supposed to get what you feel it's like it gets easy. What if your credit is bad? He's very talented he's a great dude he's a humble guy great teammate very supportive that's like a guy that you don't want to wrong because you like you can feed off your energy because you can see like we make him play he's like he like IGB it's like IGB 2.0 so he's like well you got to go with guys like that with good energy it's made you play a little bit harder and then like when you make a play he's out there like it's helping you like it's being out there with him he's a good player. One of those guys questions can't fool kids come to Ohio State obviously in the last few years so just help me see your parents now what is it about one bill that gets you to play at Ohio State?
It's a big question I know. It's a big question I know. Yeah, let me just start some preparation because we have so many kids come out of Glebil and just play at Leeds I lead like Leeds school was and then like like tracks a big part of it because I mean actually everybody got to run track like it's minutes right you don't really get a choice do you ever does like get out here and like know how to compete and then like G like Glebil's that mental toughness into you so like have you like if you're down you got to be mentally tough because I mean life's not going to be easy so it's like being out here you know we could be when you down just pick yourself back up I mean that's what he is down for me and that's what he is down for me. How would you describe the mentality of the defense right now getting this opportunity for a rehab for the warden? Yeah hungry and thankful I mean we know how the last last time when you know we had a chip on our shoulder I mean we were riding high before that game and we took that loss and we came back had to make a couple changes but I think we understand what you know everything's that stake right now um you know just fighting to where another high stage jersey for the next game that's what's
on stake and just to be able to represent this this uh this state and this uh this team I mean we understand what's uh what's on the line and you know we're just hungry and blessed that we get this opportunity to play in the Rose Bowl. I mean there is uh I don't think anybody imagined it imagine us losing um you know I didn't that's for sure and I think after that it was uh kind of hit deep but understanding that man we still there's still a lot of ball left to be played I mean you can let it sting for a little bit but you know if you let it carry over too long then you know there there goes there goes your whole season by I think we did a great job of just understanding coming together in this room right here not being afraid to display or hold accountability for one another and you know as as that happened he came back we grouped and you know we're just you're going right now um and and I'm just
blessed for those specific moments you know losing I mean no one wants to lose but the the testimonies and the things are taught within those little situations speaks of all of you. I throw over a letter of the wrong. Hey Jay what did you see from the last couple of weeks then was there like a push from him and then there were conversations with him and he could seem like he was playing some of his basketball yeah I mean that's that's my boy he's in the R2X club too but you know uh Kiata I mean every time his numbers call he goes out there and makes the most of it no no matter where where we are in the game when he goes out there he's just hungry he wants to go make plays and you know we see it and practice so it's not surprising to us. Bill Rebino, let's play this back. Dylan gave us obviously very elusive and he's not very tall. How important it could be to just kind of stay in your past rush lanes and neglect a lot of balls and kind of make a difference that way? Yeah I think it just comes out being disciplined uh no one who you're playing against like you said
Dylan he's uh he sure but he's very elusive I mean he can he is making throws I mean he get out the puck he can do everything um so I think for us we just have to discipline and just continue to just uh meet with Coach Jay me with uh coach Knows and understand how we can uh just eliminate that. One question about you and Jack I mean your personality seem to be a little different you more on the quiet side he's yeah how about you've played together four years both five store guys kind of describe your relationship with him uh friendship with him and just kind of how you cop with each other. Man that's uh that's my brother like he said um we're different but very alike um think outside like you said he's louder I'm quiet but you know once we're on that field we're like the same person um we'll do anything for this team you know we'll die for our players and we'll give everything we got. Room together for four years correct? Yeah fall camp. Every room? Yeah sometimes go over there. It's the move over there. So yeah. There's a neat one who's the messing one. Uh we have our share of days when we when I'm neat he's neat or you know we might both be messy
but we do a good job. Yeah uh I'd probably say I'm a better kid than Jack though. Tony Gurgman like I have uh when you're playing a team for the second time and that was almost a season to go by now. How much of uh are you at square one with with the scouting preparation or how much do you take from that game and how much do you avoid taking so that you don't have any preconceived notions of what you're going up against offense on the offense flying? I say it's pretty 50-50 I mean uh that game like you said it was a while ago but at the same time they elevated as a team so did we so we understand that they they had they made some changes for sure um you know there's team there's a certain density we can take back from that game but we also understand that um they went on a little run after that and we can see that they elevated as an offense so we just got to continue to watch those games dissect the other games and just continue to see um what stands out and what they change from the from the past game. We got a couple calls on on zoom that will wrap up with uh first we have uh Nick Hamilton from
night cast media Nick. Uh this one to ask you basically about the synergy of this defense and how you guys were able to uh not only celebrate the triumphs but get through the adversity be able to be this top notch defense that you are in college football today. Uh here you get the question yeah no problem uh one to ask you about the synergy you are we're able to develop over course of the season obviously celebrating the triumphs but also getting through the adversities to where you are all the top notch defense that you all are today. Yeah uh I mean like you said that we went through a lot of trials to trials um but there's also there's a lot of things we can take away from all the wins and losses um and from those those wins we understood that hey we can be the best defensive country and from those losses we understand that there's still um things that need to be fixed and I think when you take all that in at once um they come down to the the common goal or the common talk which is you can there's always learning points everywhere
and depending how we dissect those games or how we just continue to come as one and elevate um you know we we continue to just um collect all those those learning points and just continue to grow from them. And one final question Joey Coffin Columbus dispatch Joey. JT uh what have what have you guys done better and the especially in the Tennessee game and just latinist season you think about turning some of the the pressures that you've got on the quarterbacks and the sacks and getting a home in some of those situations. Yeah I think it was more just uh understanding the defense as a whole understanding everybody's job uh thing as the season went on we get to understand that you know we have to know what's going on in the backhand we also know it's going on to the linebacker crew to understand uh what plays we have uh rumor-free and and I think once we understood that and got a better understanding of the of everybody's job I mean it it showed this play because you know everybody knows we each other's doing it's not like uh the linebackers know what they're doing uh and the corners and BI they know only
their job I think we all know each other's job and we continue to ask each other questions um on you know if they're listening how they can get to the quarterback and you know if I'm dropping playing quarterbacks by I can ask Cody on how to open field tackle so you know we just we just kind of lean on each other's understanding because uh you know um like I said like Denzel knows how to play corner-bedded then I know how to play corner so you know he has more more wisdom at that position than I do. JT thank you very much. Thank you. Uh definitely a little bit of both um obviously I just wanted the team to win I think we got a chance to win you know deathly towards it and then stretch that last drive um I was a couple plays here a couple calls that he made me sure they've got it but um I think the frustration more so it just comes from you know wanting to win more than anything. What did you say he was a little surprise how much attention you got right away from your defense how about you yeah deathly though we maybe give them more one-on-ones kind of how the game playing with set up um you didn't
about like you know different coverage like a cloud to my side and this is kind of how the game goes. What's the process been like sometimes where whatever reason just just just see that. Yeah definitely um especially in college a lot of the game fans defensively were taking the away um you know we had a lot of success at a high-speed with one of the boys having different the weapons they're kind of still get the victories and um I was yeah you continue to do better jobs when I hear my horse limitation the process been like post game getting on the same page with Kyler just you guys exchange text or you guys know yeah film definitely um kind of ask me what did I see there kind of go over and play and um I just how I give him what I saw and kind of different feedback there. Change words Mark I get it we're asking questions about the previous game bar are you the type of guy to let a game like that winger or how do you flush it you got to move on got to move on some long season got like 16 more of them hopefully no I can stay healthy throughout
the year and um just continue to build and get better each week. You guys did so much work throughout the off season to get on the same page how different is it when you get into that regular season. Yeah it's totally different it's totally different um you can do a lot of things you know in shirts and shorts and then once you go out there put practice and you got pads on you do like the point practice we do with the colds but there's nothing like actually going out there um no live action and really trying to be on the same game so I think that relationship will continue to develop and develop. Is that it just a matter of reps then this much? Yeah definitely definitely um like I said I was kind of my first live action together um so it can continue to be. When you're early impressions on time on the field together and yeah but now obviously I have a death respect you know JG's call or preseason and obviously be also really healthy that's kind of the most important thing obviously that's all healthy even going for it so um that's it actually. Marvin what are your early impressions of the Rams? What do you think of the Rams? Yeah I mean they're a good team they're good physical team I got
new lot of new guys up front I think that's kind of where the strong suit is um kind of a little different to Buffalo come over a little match coverage so I'm excited to build this one. Personally when the bells did give you one of my opportunities I'm excited to get it. Wasn't many of them. Wasn't many of them so uh I thought maybe I'm I'm sure you think game versus just playing you know not get any preseason game actually. Into the first three season. Definitely definitely thinking a lot out there and um you know I think I'll come with reps I think to think and less and just going out there and playing definitely come with reps and it's something you know I'll get better at but they definitely I was thinking a lot out there. Is there anything you can do to prove that that's for my coverage and I think you did it in the past because you're you're going to face that a lot obviously. Yeah I mean you just got to team you get open for yourself make yourself available uh and then when the ball does get away making the play um this he's just taking you away that means other guys are having chance to get open so uh that's how kind of how I look at it it's no longer since you know offense the best thing is for us. They're continuity with Tyler
is this something that comes pretty quickly in a new game or something like that? Hopefully sooner or later I think um I'll continue to see we'll see. I don't think we're in a bad place right now at all obviously I don't really think that but uh just a live reps we'll continue to grow and show. I feel like I'm not going to be a captain like it's like it's that I felt you know but that would be awesome you know but you know if it happens I'd be great but not either way I want to be a captain. I'm not going to be a captain. I'm not going to be a captain like it's that I felt you know um but that would be awesome you know but you know if it happens I'd be great but not either way I want to assume the world as a captain from the perspective of guys until the visual
words and get back to that point. Yeah I mean I can't say that um I mean I guess the biggest thing is that I felt like how you used to in the past but it didn't take just the first LTA days it took training and left and right once this season because I know what it was going to be true so it took a lot of reps um just to give back to feeling like myself for day one LTAs and then that whole first week but now like today specifically just changing some small things with my feet that is it talking about the long coach about some things I'm going to do with my feet to get to that but to sell my traditional angle that I love to sit on I thought I felt great already but I felt even better. Sorry the more excited tomorrow now I'm getting my feet back and how I like the right side and on the left side so long side. I mean obviously I feel like in the league whether I left the right you're still going against
premier guys obviously they're high expectations for the left hand or attack. But um there's definitely the like the level of energy and like the expectations definitely take the human strength because now connect the blind side that's the as the tackle well you know so um so yeah I would say in terms of communication as far as just even outside of the facility just stuff like that like really creating that the tackle quarterback bond even more often feel it I think has been something that's even the cool thing. I got the tags one day as I had like you put it up I was like you know yeah I've been training both I've been training both you know I I asked after the season they're like honestly you know we'll talk to you so for the season and I just got the tags on having what happens with the free agency then so I was like you know what I had a whole season right tackle so if I get the word I'm going I'm standing right tackle and I did what I did before I'm built on that bus I was like I might
as well as train the left tackle now as if we're going to be left tackle and I'd rather do that than train on right tackle with the co-a to the left tackle I wasn't high going to switch my feet you know what I mean so I'm like let me just prepare an advance I was like yeah it was kind of you know I think occasionally on third down there'd be a lot of twists I was just not like it's automatic and I think that was my mindset for like the first half of the season like I didn't have to go into game with some pros like oh my gosh they did that I kind of figured like okay like this is this is the type of rush I mean again this is how this guy usually rushes if I get the vibe this is how the ends like the rush you know tackles that first year guys we got the premier patch on already know what it was going to be already know what the every and honestly just knowing that's kind of an advantage to so you're not you're not you're not oh the problem twist on my side it was never air job but it comes up on my side three plays in a well in two minutes I do that you know what I mean I'm watching more everybody else and he rarely
you know it goes out there occasionally third down I was like you know what I mean so that effect it's kind of it's also kind of an engine away but it's also exciting okay I'm going to get the hardest look you know those are real real reps you know the things so really out on our way to kind of process that I was like hey when they tell me let me know about I'm just going to train it I was training all left so TAs I guess if I didn't hear anything about TAs I came in like so you know what I mean because just like I'm cool with training both continuing I would have been cool training both continually but I feel like anybody any position will be like okay like you want as soon as possible give your feet kind of settle in your hips settle in your hands so then I'll start talking about it would it would have been harder than you work both very good to you no no but they're definitely but in terms of the development it's definitely a lot faster
stand on one side but I think having that the weeks that we had the transitional seasons over and like was fun you know it would go trying to get up to put them in the car and and we think that it's time right now but when it comes back I'm gonna show them the one house I've got a house not too far from so I told them I got that house like I got a yellow outside like DJs you know what I mean so yeah that's doesn't have any stock or anything doesn't mean anything so we're we have to play on Friday and that's really all that matters we're gonna take two more from zoom before turning it back our first one's gonna come from Steven from Cleveland.com go ahead the fine I'm sorry hey Caleb we've seen you were talking about the Ohio State Office the success that they've had obviously Jeremiah has been a big part of that what's it been like this year going against him in practice and you know after doing that this is
a surprise at all to see him having the success he's had as a freshman. No it doesn't bring any surprises it was pretty pretty easy to see the talent that he has and the blessings that God has put on his plate but it's always a it's always a challenge going against Jeremiah and other receivers and Mecca and Carnival practice and even guys like Brandon and his impression Rogers they they do a great job bringing looks for the defense and create a lot of obstacles. I'll find a question from zoom is going to come from Dan Hope. Go ahead Dan. Caleb you Quinn had a lot of success against you guys when you played him at Alabama last year just what do you remember from going up against him last year and what can you learn from that game? Really smart quarterback knows how to operate their offense. Push the ball in the right places and then Coach Narkeeson does a great job putting him in positions to win. Jerry back to you. Yep thank you Rob Aller Columbus dispatch Caleb GT and Jack Lannops and sides and they
is opposite off the field as they are on in terms of personality and just the people they are. They're offices but they are also like one of the closest people I know they've spent a lot of time together. They've come from different sides of the country so they're different people for sure but they're both really great people a really great man. I'm sorry I respect both of them. I'm not going to do that I'm sorry I'm not going to do that. What about Austin Warren? Clark had throughout the throughout the season we would always see you on Wednesday nights you would like to be some of the last people off the field. For the things that you're working on after practice always the same is it a routine what are the things that you're hoping to get out of those extra moments after practice? It's a routine pretty much the the keys that we need to go into the game with and then also
it changes week to week on based on what our jobs are going to put us into doing so every week we go through the same things and then we add certain things that we do for the what the team that we play is going to ask us to accomplish. Bill, we've been on this club this past. Yeah I already got one here. Okay, Joe and Goplin called this past. Killin, when takes us to use his play action and they use play action to clear a bit what's what do they do and what do they do in those spots and what's the key for you guys in those moments with Quinn? They do a really good job with I Candy and it creates a lot of challenges for defense in order to see if it's a runner pass and to see because that's when they're going to take their shots too as well. So really just having great eye discipline seeing the line and seeing what it's telling us. So that's just what it does. He breaks Nick Walker Letterman role. Hey, well you guys had a pretty good game plan for Tyler Warren when you guys played him. You guys have another Texas has a good tight end and Gunnar Mountain.
What do you guys going to have to do to limit him and how do you think about his game? He's a really good player. He makes a lot of plays and he has a lot of receiving hours this year. So really just do the same thing we've done all year. Just be disciplined in our responsibilities and if you're on them you've got to make a play when it comes. Right, one of the main drillists. Clayman.com, when you think their receivers is kind of a whole, you know, they spread ball around. It seems like a lot of what stands out about the way that they can spread ball around. A lot of really good athletes. I played with Isaiah Bond last year who's a really great receiver, a lot of speed. And then all the receivers have made a lot of plays. So I mean everybody has to be on their peasy cues if we're going to stop them and have a do a really good job. Front row here, 10 May Letterman role. Yeah, kill, but you moved up here and I don't have to tell you when you moved. Basically a year ago. And stuff. It was a little bit of a leap of faith because you know, you know how many athletes are on this team
get athletes to stuff. But why don't you really feel this defense come into its own. And then then pass that man watching in Rose Bowl, you're recognition of what was coming. Seemed to be on point. Did it feel like that? I mean, you personally. I think the defense has played really well throughout the season. I think we've had games where we played better and games where we haven't put it all together. But I think that's how all defenses are. So I can't say there's a certain moment where I think we put it together. But what's your second part of your question? No, you seem really on point against Oregon about recognizing what was coming. I mean, you were really active out there directing and things like that. Did it feel like that? I guess. I feel like as Luke said earlier, the preparation that we put in goes into that and just feeling comfortable and what we're doing, comfortable and what we're seeing with the other teams. I feel like that allows us to play fast and can me and Laketon to communicate to everybody else.
Did I miss anyone's questions here? Steve, how long in front of you in this sport? Yeah, Caleb, but you came to Ohio State to play for National Championship. And there were a lot of ups and downs throughout the season. Just to be in this position, the last four teams still alive. You feel validated by that. Did you always have faith that this is how it was going to turn out? I came to Ohio State to become a better player and to help the team be as good as it can be. Not to win a National Championship. Not like that wasn't the only goal for me coming here. I really just wanted to be in the team and be with the brotherhood. But it's a great feeling being in the final four and being with the team and everything that comes with that. But it's a blessing to be here. And one final question, Bill, where Ben Wentz Club is this bad? I did a lot of follow up when I talked to you at the back of the game. You said when they scored their first and second touchdown, you were really hot on the sidelines. What was your message to the team? And you know, that's a good offense. They're going to score against most people. Why were you so hot?
Really just because we didn't execute, which let them score. We've done that a lot, which is something we can't do in these big games and these games where it's winter go home. So we got to make the plays when they come and get our competitive excellence as Coach Dases make the play where your number's called. I feel like they're definitely picking up quick. I mean, I was in their shoes one time and I had Zach Harrison, Javonte, and Tyler Friedell in front of me. So I feel like I'm just trying to be one of those peers that they work for me and kind of just give them the steps to get there. And I feel like they're definitely picking up quick and they're definitely going to be one of great rushmen. I feel like all the camps I've definitely gotten a big course learn and I love that. So I asked Coach Jay for it. I love getting more reps because I just like protecting my craft.
So I mean, some people may not need it. But I mean, I just like to get as many reps as I can. What do you think is the most important course learning? So what kind of learning? I mean, for me it's always just kind of getting my little details perfectly, like my steps, my footing, kind of just perfecting my toolbox is what we call it, my craft, and just trying to be a second whenever every place we try to do. I'm just trying to get stronger faster, everything all the above. But one of my big things is being a leader and kind of just not trying to look still look up to Jack and JT and kind of have my own kind of leadership and be able to bring people into it. So I feel like we kind of have a lot of leaders on the B line and at the B in position. So we kind of all kind of just kind of talk to each other and others. It's a bit of tough for me to be able to open up to these guys playing with them all. We're all doing it and being on the field and just like that to make them do it now.
And trying to put this to be like, so you need this guys, how's that transition? It's really competitive and we love it. We all competitive people, we all love to fish each other. And I feel like the thing is the best side of all of this. We're all just kind of bouncing off each other and seeing what one person does and we kind of build it into our actual box and we all kind of just kind of build one great thing. You remember last year when you got the shot at the full back in the club and did they approach you with that idea and two coach them? I mean how did that come about? Because you're a good jacks high or a floppy. Okay. You're good to test that. So I definitely did it in high school. I was full back and a little bit tied in. So I feel like it kind of saw what I could do there in Coach Wilson. Honestly, you left watching it too before you left. And I feel like you playing that seed in Coach Day's head and Coach Day kind of just went for it and tried to do the best I could to do it. Is that continuing now? Do you have anything in the screen? New playbook. I did not know you haven't got that far. Yeah, yeah, yeah. How toposet you are?
I like to think myself as a football player. I can really play any position on the field. You need me to just give me a weaker two to learn it and kind of perfect it and try to do my best for you. Kid Jack, do the same thing. Oh yeah. Well, don't laugh. We're athletes that's more. Kid is talking to Coach Johnson on Tuesday about some of the conversations and sort of sought you and got out to have some conversations after the JT and Jack decided to come back. Just got to win into those from your perspective and out of that help you maybe get the right mindset. I guess I'm going to do this. Definitely kind of seeing it all the way through. I feel like people kind of just see what happened and they don't know everything that goes into it. How long the season is now. So what you got to do to prepare for and what happened and all that time from here to to this. So I feel like we definitely just coached in me kind of connected. We kind of just talks man-to-man and he kind of just sent straight to me and I feel like we kind of both have been honest. I mean, we're making it together better every day. We got the four best DNs, five best DNs, honestly, and then college football and we're going to be one of the best DLs and college football.
How do you feel like a better player today at any work in the season? I've taken big steps in my roles of just being responsible and being more of a leader and kind of stepping up and taking a step to kind of get out there more on the team and kind of bring people in and I feel like we're kind of helping out more. How do you recommend a round of basketball? I mean, it sounds bizarre but I mean the season goes by so fast already. And you're kind of like week 10 and you're like wow it's already week 10 so now it's kind of getting more time to kind of enjoy it and kind of savor it because you're in your career career. But you don't want to spend all your power the first month of the year right? There is a mindset in that season. Yeah definitely definitely going to have the mental stability to handle all those weeks and all those practices. How much has Larry talked to you guys about like that? The last question right here. 2016-2017 4 NFL Defense Awards all in San Francisco.
How much does he talk to that guy? I mean he doesn't have to talk about it. We know about it. We've seen it every day. We watch the film. We see him all working together. We know what it could be. We know we could become. So we know we're right at the same, we're at the right place at the right time and God wanted us to be here and he knew we wanted us all to come together and kind of play together and be able to bounce off and just perfect our craft together. And I feel like we all are just great individuals and we come together. It's something special. Doing it? What are the deliberations? I'm surprised it's even a conversation. Like it should always be live. Let's tell you. Tell you play football. So obviously there's a proximity to the season which is a little reckless. I understand that. But in spring we're competing for jobs. If I'm a quarterback, I'm asking to be live so I can show him how I'm different than anyone that can't be live. You know what I mean? You're always trying to find an edge. And if you're never fully live, I don't think you fully give guys opportunity to be who they want to be or who they can be.
So that being said, I will cast my vote but that will not be my final decision on that. But I will cast my vote. I think that you guys have handled it well. It was good for all parties involved. And more we can do that better but I'm sure that is coming to a close here very quickly. So. Right. Jeremiah Offfield, we saw after practice on the side of the day that the mob that came to get autographs and things. When you're working with him on all these things you're talking about but also dealing with the life of being one of the biggest names in college football, and you help mentor him in that aspect. Yeah, I mean, it's a blessing to be able to be in a position where you know can provide insight or I wouldn't say recommendations but just give perspective. What how he chooses to receive the first perspective or not one and not me. He always does but which is fine.
But to be in that position is really humbling that being said. He does a really good job on his own. He doesn't need to check the one too much. He's really done a great job. Again, the way he was raised in his morals and humble would always sign and taking pictures. I'm always trying to be the bad guy for him because he's not going to be and just says again more about his character. But he's not the only guy any guy would kind of do that. We have a group full of awesome young guys but Jeremiah has done a great job with it. He's handling it and it's definitely growing at an exponential rate to say the least. But I think he's built for it and he's been handled at a high level. But those around him were trying to help him out a little bit. What made Quincy the first freshman to do this is Black straight this year? Yeah, I mean, that's a good question. I think that, you know, frankly, I'm not really fully evolved with that.
So that can be, but I wasn't. I think that people on the outside whether it be defense or even coach day or anybody brought it to my attention, we were kind of just going about practice and that's our expectation and make plays, not make mistakes. And he was starting to make a lot of a lot of plays consistently. I think the consistent level that he's been as a person, being on time and doing his job description on each play and the ball is coming your way and making some big plays. And you know, it starts, it starts being seen by your peers and your peers start asking for it. They start barking, getting a stripe off all those kind of things. That's the ultimate sign of respect. I think with your peers, you know, go to your bat and he's not going for his bat. I think people are bringing it to your position coach. I think it speaks volumes of the general respect that you're earning through the process. So I think something like that happened and, you know, as well as served based on his peers and other coaches. Steve, I'm Craig. Cleveland.com.
Ryan Day was talking about how impressed he's been this spring with Austin Sarovale. All that he's been able to do and Tyler Bohn was talking last week about the importance of the cross-straining and all that that goes into that. Have you seen Austin benefit from this spring and everywhere that he's been and helping with a piece of you, thinking he's going to be regardless of where he fits on his offensive line? Yeah, I think Austin's been awesome. I mean, he literally, you know, what was they say, he played every spot, every position. We just move around, you know, and handles it. And, you know, he's one of those guys. I feel like he watched film over and over again day after day. And his name never really gets brought up, you know, in a good way. Like he on the O line, your name gets brought up when, usually not going as well, you know. I mean, they're literally at the point of attack on every single play. So there's nowhere to hide. And so, but Austin, when his name gets brought up, he's like, man, that was a good job. A good job. A good job. Pass off that combo. Whatever. It's always positive. And been really impressed with him. He started in the winter. Did a great job through the winter. Again, continuing to build a respect for his peers. And then he's going to a good job.
Really a good job just being very consistent to spring. Are left, Jeff Gilbert, press pros? Brian, since you've been working more with the whole offense, I've come to quarterback play. What has grown in your, I don't know, appreciation of that position and what those guys have to do and go through? What do you think more about those guys versus maybe what you thought before? It's just a wide receiver guy. Yeah, I mean, I mean, there's just a wide receiver guy. A few hard-slivers receiver guys. You won't be a very later on. It's all about quarterback play. So I think in that same world, though, to the point is that, you know, in order to be a great receiver or a great receiver guy, whatever you want to call it, there's only one page, just the quarterbacks page. So everything is based off them. Whether they're progression, they're timing, the stresses they have is what we're trying to minimize. So if you don't fully understand the quarterback play, it's hard to maximize receiver play. I think, you know, that being said, yeah, I'm still always learning.
You know, I think that I can't say anything's jumped out massively right now. But I would say that, you know, I guess I would say that the preparation level, I mean, the one is required to execute and play at a high level. It's just not capable in the a lot of time, right? I mean, there's only so much time where I'd be with players. If you're not willing to spend, you know, your own time getting prepared for practice to be, to maximize one's ability, there's a good chance you're not going to maximize your ability. So, you know, other positions, I mean, align same thing. I mean, receiver play sometimes can, you know, get away from it. We do a great job studying and being in the room extra for sure. But the requirement of a quarterback to know, the fixed protections, the BR run game coordinator based on the calls, you know, to get us in different checks. There's so much thing you know. And frankly, you know, the, you know, the online is good as the quarterback. The receiver's going to the quarterback. They're often silly as the quarterback.
And it's our responsibility to put guys in position to maximize what they're capable of maximizing. But their inability to notice that they can just spend extra time outside the a lot of time, I think is critical. And the amount that it takes, I guess that was maybe a little naive too. But the guys are doing a great job doing it. Just a couple more coaches got a meeting. Rob Aller, Columbus Dispatch. Brian, you know, you've got to reach the mount top. You've got to ban her out there in national champs. I think you keep these guys grounded. Being in the moment, looking ahead, not back. Are you tougher on them? Because no, I think that, I mean, I think we have a lot of guys, you know what? I think it's understanding that we were trying to build the map to get to where you wanted to get to. But now that we have the map, doesn't mean we've traveled the path. So like we know what it looks like. The guys that are here know what it's supposed to look like. The guys before us, sitting on the believable example of how to get to where you want to get to.
So the focus is on trying to replicate what they just did and how they operated. Can't say we've done that right now. So it's very easy to stay motivating because they already know it's not good enough. Frankly, and so the last thing they want to do is put in a ton of effort and then not reach their goals. So motivation, I don't think is needed. I think there is a catching up of those and maybe aren't quite sure what it takes. You know, and but overall motivation is not what we've needed. A clarity of message is definitely what we've been focused on and I think the message is being received. So not concerned about, you know, motivation and the looking back, if you will. I think everyone's pretty pretty focused on being forward and knowing we haven't accomplished anything. Steve, it means. Who would you say is the leader of your YBC? Well, I would say carnal state, Brennan and his pride done the most outspoken, you know, in the room.
Yeah, I would say they're doing a good job. Those are probably the two guys that would jump out of my room. Yep. Brennan, he's been in trouble. Obviously. Carnal taking on that role, more and being more vocal. He's a good football player. Obviously, he's the other leader. That process for him and becoming a more vocal leader took you to say that on him. What was the question? Carnal, like, what do you think like the growth of the part of it? Yeah, I mean, he's I think he's pulled guys aside, you know, had one-on-one conversations with them. He's locked in, you know, just I think he saw the impact that I'm eccom made in the role he played. And to think that we're gonna lose that and then be a better group. Part doesn't mathematically make sense to him. So someone's got to set up in that role. One, and one respects him too. He knows he's capable of it. And it's just the desire and the appreciation, I think, to be at the table now, the overhead. And appreciate the way I met him, probably went about his business. And so he probably valued that, appreciated that.
And he's just being assured we still have that. Final question. Bill Rebellion, what's going on this dish? Could you assess the running back room? I think it's pretty much assumed both as running back to CJ and James. I think that's hand in system is probably the way you're going to go again. How is it working? And you see third and maybe fourth guys up in there? I think that, you know, in college football, we're in a football. Any football really, you got to have depth in the running back room. I think that this very apparent in the NFL, it's usually a two-back system, you know, very rarely is it one guy. But in college, I think we saw the benefit of that last year. The ability to compliment each other is really important. And the ability for us to identify what they do great and put them in good positions to be what they are. What they're best at, I should say, is really important as a coaching staff. I've been very impressed with even the younger guys, Sam and Bo, and the way they've come along, consistency, so what you're chasing, right? You're always able to. That's why you're here. But how often you do it ultimately dictates how much you play.
But overall, I think locksmen on them, they understand the standard in in pass pro. And not being a guy we got to sell out because you can't pass protect. So we were blessed, especially with Trey last year and in Quinchon. But no, these guys have done a good job. They're competing. They've been very coachable. No, it's very, it's shown a blog on film. But yeah, I mean, it's always hard on backs. I mean, every opportunity you get to go live and break tackles really gives you the most feedback on what these guys are capable of. If you're just playing tag out there, you never get any art. At least you shouldn't. But the running backs on contact days have done a good job. James has done a really good job growing, really excited about him. Everyone's really excited about him and CJ. So I think ultimately, how group the, how will, how good would the group be? He was probably based on, you know, the top, the bottom rising, right? I mean, you're gonna have some guys at the top, but, you know, where's the floor?
And so I think, uh, Bow and Sam, those guys did a really good job. And maybe some more guys to get healthy, more guys on campus, but very encouraged. And you saw him improve. And then, um, McClein, I think is a, is a great plus. I mean, he is a guy that has football intelligence. He's picked it up. You know, he's kind of of those incoming freshmen who still should be in high school. He's a guy. I think you're going to point to and you can see right now he's going to be a player. Over to the right, Austin Ward, the podcast. What was a healthy Mitchell Melton? How does he fit in for your defense? What does he bring to it? Yeah, he's, you know, Mitch is that combination player, you know, in, um, in our four down, um, you know, he's a guy that can do a lot of things, uh, drop, fold in there and make plays. You, you see some of that all the time. Really athletic, um, you know, we're kind of loaded at that end position.
So he's going to play there. But, you know, like I said last year, we, we haven't needed it. But he's a guy you would point to along with CJ Hicks, you know, for the, for the long season. Um, people get injured. You get a little light inside. It's always hard on the defensive tackles. But if you're going to play with, uh, three ends, you know, that's Mitch is a guy who definitely can do all that. He has that over to the left. Joey Kaufman Columbus dispatch. Jim, you've talked about this before, but I think in past years where you're going up against, uh, really talented receiver group offense to encourage your players to, it's not okay if they give up the play and to go nearly almost the first half. Today where you, the offense didn't get them the end zone until the late in the second half. Just. And you guys have guys down the second area. Just what, what did you think of that sort of trend and how it's evolved in the way you guys almost shut them out of the first. Yeah, I think it's become, um, you know, an expectation now.
Um, you know, our DB's, you know, our BIA, best in America, we. Let the country and past defense. Right? I think, uh, it was 96. What I, uh, what I got here and it was number one last year. So they've, they've taken that spirit. So it's a competitive spirit. It's an expectation now. It doesn't matter who we're going against. It's, it's, they view it as a standard. So that was good to see in the first, first half. Uh, over to the right Spencer Holbrook, Vladimir and roll. Jim, we've talked about safety changing the way that you play defense in the Leo and the linebackers. But how much does having the depth that you guys have a defensive tackle change the way that you can do things defensively? Yeah. I mean, you're going to play to your strengths, you know, and that's, that's my job is to what do we have and what do we do best? And when you have defensive tackles, um, but I've said it before, it helped our defense so much last year.
When you have defensive tackles that actually make tackles, which is what we have right now. It changes the way you call a game. You know, it certainly helps you be, um, in better shape on explosive plays on the back end. You don't have to do a whole lot to help those guys out because they're making tackles. So you got to go, you got to go with that. You know, you got to let those guys play and, and, and they're good. So, um, you can't get too far away from the scheme of having those defensive tackles make place because they're doing it and it works. So, um, you know, you got to go over to the left, Tony Gurdman, Buckeye Huddle. Jim Ryan talked about the quarterback run being more of a thing with the offense here during the season. How much of when you're facing a team like that? How much does that impact your day to day throughout the week preparing for that? Yeah, it's a ton, you know, it, I think it changes everything you do on defense. You see it everywhere from the NFL on down. If you have a quarterback who can make plays with his feet, your scheme better be designed that, you know, to, to take that away and to the right.
So, it changes the way you look at everything when you're game planning. Thank you, Donovan. Over here to the right, Tim May, the Tim May podcast. Yeah, Jim, you might be doing it right when I asked Ryan about just, for example, Calvin Simpson Hunt, but the corner scene did be playing almost with the chip owner shelter to a certain day. Davis and Nick, but no, it took the day personally. It looked like you know, to make us some of the hype going into the game. But what, what do you see from that group in particular that? Who is you going into this off season? Yeah, when you can, when you have corners that you can count on. Again, it's just like having defensive tackles in the run game. When you have corners, you can count on that are going to compete all the time, no matter what the situation is. And we've developed that again, it changes the way you call the entire game. I mean, you, you're able to leave those guys on an island. You're able to switch up converges and they know what they're doing and they take great pride in it.
So, having those guys out there in the development, it's a big deal. It really is. And it's not jumping into the picture a little bit more. I was giving it like that a few years away. Yeah, I mean, he's, he did come in late and you know, he compete, he's one of those guys that just competes every day, doesn't say much. You know, he's trying to live up to the standard of the other guys. And you, you see him coming along. You know, you see him step by step coming along. And, you know, put him in a, you know, competitive atmosphere, same step up. That's a great sign. And final question for coach Knowles, Dan Hope, 11 Warriors. You mentioned CJ Hicks a few minutes ago. Have you seen him take the strides you need to see the spring to trust him as a guy who could be a potential starter on his defense? Yes, I mean, I think CJ has shown that he has talent. And I think it's my job to put him in the best situations for him because he can be a force.
You know, he's much better when he's bloodsaying or he's directed because he's able to use his athletic ability. But he has certainly shown that he's going to be able to help this defense coach. Thank you very much for your time. All right. And we will bring offensive coordinator and quarterback coach Chip Kelly to the podium now. We'll open up questions over to the left bill Rebenowitz Columbus dispatch. What are your just general impressions of the offense coming out of spring, especially at quarterback? We'll look at all 15. So I think, you know, this day is is a big part of it, you know, because it was the first time they were going to play some of those guys that were going to play in front of a crowd. And it was an amazing crowd. You know, you get 80,000 for spring game. Now, you could see some of the young guys kind of looking around like, wow, this is different than the indoor. But that's what they have to get ready to play it. So we got better from practice one practice, 15, you know, it's still in evaluation through the whole process.
But it's not something in the players, though, to the will, we're not making a decision, walking off the field today saying, hey, this is the direction that we're going in. We'll be very authentic and look through everything and make sure that we get a really good feel for what it all looks like and then who will best move this offense. That's what our decisions can do. I do. I think we got a lot of guys there. That part's tough. I think because you got it. There's guys that deserve reps, you know, when they're all competing for it. So, you know, sometimes you'd like to be sometimes when you had a guy who was an initial starter, well, he's going to get the boat to the reps to get them better. But they capitalize on it. We really rolled them. You know, if you were at some of our spring practices, you're watching all those guys rotate and rotate out. And as we talk about all the time, you know, the old adaches is don't count your reps, make your reps count. You know, and we'll put it all together and really come up with, you know, which guy do we really feel is going to help us move this offensively. Over to the far right, Bill Landis, the podcast, Kings of the North. Hey, Chip, you said when we first talked to you that the basis of a lot of your success running the football is just kind of figuring out what your guys do best and then leading into that over 15 practices now. How good of a field? Do you think you have for that?
And then what are the next few months look like as you try to piece that all together? Really good question. It's interesting because the one thing that I think sometimes makes tough and an evaluation is what a good front we want to get. So for 15 practices, those guys on the other side of the ball were pain, you know, Jack and JT and Ty Lee can those guys. But I know come fall. There's not going to be anybody more happy that we have those guys on the defensive side of the ball because of what they can do. So I still think we'll have to really evaluate that what we're good at. What we're not what we got to get better at what we got to work on. But I think the work we got against such a quality defense was really key for us. Over to the far left. Nathan Baird Cleveland dot com. So you were going this time. It came out of the spring with still a lot of question marks about the offensive line. And even I guess that last season came out with question marks. How have you seen that progress in the time that you've been here and what's your confidence level that that offensive line is going to allow this offense to do everything it wants to do this fall.
Yeah, I mean, I've been here. Short of my time. So I didn't know. I really don't have anything to compare to. So I kind of tabula rassa come in with a blank slate and just observe it. I think we're really athletic. I think. And in in in Seth and those guys inside are really smart and really intelligent. They allow you to to be able to make adjustments in game. Just talking football with some of those guys. It's like, well, these guys are wired the right way. And a lot of those guys have played a lot of football. So they can bank on their experience. I think we we've got about four guys that have played significant amount of snaps and we got to make sure we can find out who the fifth guy is. But that's similar to where the quarterbacks body is, I think. And I also think of the offensive line. You're not going to play a 16-17 game season and just playing with five guys. You really have to develop your depth there. There's going to be a number two center that's going to play a lot of football. There's going to be a number two guard, whether it's on either side of the ball. There's going to be a third tackle. I think you're going to get tested, especially with this new in this new playoff format. You really have to think that way. So you know, you're not looking for five starters. You're really looking for 10 starters because you're going to have to.
You're going to have to probably play 10 guys to get when you get through a 16-17 game season. Over to the right Austin Ward, the podcast. I think it was the first play of the game. The T formation and then the reverse. I don't know, spin move with Will Howard. Understand what's the inspiration for that package and that sort of. I'm going to rank with the quarterback. Mr. Hayes. There's a. There's a looming figure around this whole program. You know, we get to go to work every day and the Woody Hayes Athletics Center. So it was good enough for Woody. We're going to stay with him. We're going to do it. We ran some last year. I think we took 21 snaps at UCLA and T. We've got a short yardage formation for us and we've done some different things with it. But. I also, I think our players had a lot of fun, you know, practicing that and doing some different things. So. It's a small part of our offense. You know, we will not be in the T 21 times in one game. But, you know, we may get it in some short yardage situations. And I think it's come back. There's a lot of schools right now that are starting to do that. You know, it's really just you're trying to, you know, you got a half a yard to get in or you're trying to get your big guys in the game.
And I think we use three tight ends and two running backs in our formation today with Packard being the full back in that situation. So there's a lot of different things you can do in short yardage, but. A little bit of a tribute to coach coach Hayes and what he means to this program. Joey Kaufman Columbus dispatch over to the left. Chip, as you look back now, you've been here two months, 15 spring practices. Is there something you feel best about what you've been able to accomplish with this offense? Well, I haven't accomplished anything because I didn't take a snap, but. I think the most impressive thing since I've been here is how close close this football team is. You know, some programs talk about a brotherhood. This is really a brotherhood. Our practices as we talked about how good our defense is. It's they're highly competitive, but they're not combative. And those guys. They really work very, very well together, both the old line and the D line, the secondary and the receivers. The competition is the, but it's got to be the best there is in the country. You know, and that makes you better. But I think sometimes competition, you know, guys can lash out and it gets really combative.
And then all of a sudden the fight breaks out and the fight breaks out. And we're trying to accomplish and get footballed on them. But I think the way these guys cooperating work together as a group is a special bond. And I think you're going to need the closest team and the most connected teams on the ones that win. Over to the right here. Andy Baxter, Letterman, or all. Chip, obviously there's been a lot of talk about Jeremiah, but Ameca is the big returner in this group. He kind of reminded everyone what he can do today. What's it been like working with him and what kind of weapon can he be for you guys? Good point. And Ameca has reminded me and the other 14 practice sessions of what he can do. Special player, you know, and and J.J.'s a really talented player also. But, you know, I think I think all of the whole group in Cornell take did some really good things watching him this spring. And for all of them, you know, I mentioned it with the offensive line. I came in with a blank slate and I had no opinions formed. Not that really just wide eyed and just observed them. But, you know, that I think that wide receiver is really special. And I think there's a bunch of guys in there. And again, when you have to play multiple multiple games after the regular season is over,
you're going to make sure you're going to need depth like that. And the fact that it's you feel a little bit comfortable right now that we got some guys there that can make some plays in the perimeter. And that really dictates how people are going to defend you. You know, so you got a couple really good running back. You know, so are they going to load the box or are you really going to load the box and leave those guys in one on one coverage? Well, then it's the quarterbacks responsibility to decipher that and get the ball to those guys. So, or do they at least a double coverage? They list a double coverage and now it's a little bit lighter box and you can run the ball. So, having too many weapons is a good problem to have. Second roll left, Pat Murphy, 24-7 sports. Chip, we've talked a lot about kind of the quarterbacks maybe vying for the starting spot. But some of the younger guys, what have you seen from them? We got an opportunity to see more of them today than we probably have. What's your assessment of them as they kind of get in this? I always am so impressed with young guys that enroll early in watching how they get acclimated and what they do. You know, when you look at Julian and Aaron and JJ, you know, they should be in the hot lunch line of their high school.
And they're out here playing in front of 80,000 people. And they've really progressed when you watch them in meetings and listen to them and they interpret, you know, so basically the whole concept here is we throw them in the deep end and see if they can swim. You know, this, we didn't baby anything. We don't put the install in with, hey, you guys are in install. We're in install. This with the older players and then you guys, you know, go sit at the kitty table and we're just going to do the really simple things with you. They get it all in the more they can digest the more when you're in a room, when you're checking for understanding and asking questions and they can spit back to you the more confidence you have when they get in there with the plays that you can call form. So those guys have been in process. They're still learning, you know, they were the guys today that were kind of looking around and saying, wow, there's like 80,000 people here along with the offensive coordinator in the quarterback coach because I was kind of looking around because I had actually never been in the stadium until yesterday when we had. Our 14th practice in there, so I played Ohio State once when I was at Oregon, but that was in the Rose Bulls. I had never been actually in the stadium until yesterday.
So I caught myself and I went into the stadium today looking around saying 80,000 for spring. Again, that's impressive. Got time for just a few more folks over here to the right Dylan Davis Delaware Gazette. Given what you just said about throwing them into the deep end, what stood out the most about Julian's progression through 15 practices and where he is that you guys head out of spring. Julian is a very fast processor. You know, he really thinks very, very quickly on his feet. Like he makes really quick decisions. He doesn't stick on and read. He can progress and any ceasing is really well for a young player, you know, and not having been exposed to a lot of college defenses. And especially what Jim does, you know, Jim can make Jim can make a young freshman quarterback cry with some of the stuff he does. But, you know, I never saw that with Jules and I that's been in press of his his ability to retain and, you know, him and JJ, the compliment I would say to him is if you got here and you didn't know what class they were in, you wouldn't say that those guys refreshment in terms of how they picked things up and, you know, sometimes freshmen act like freshmen.
But the guys who are special, they don't act like freshmen, you know, they act like football players and those are two guys that are examples of that far left. Cameron T. Robinson, the athletic chip, you on the topic of freshmen, James peoples of Sam, got on the second half. Yeah, you talk about how deep you need to be in this era of college football. But as you search for RB three, what did you see from them today and what is what is their growth been like in this spring? Yeah, James really flashed early for me, not knowing again, kind of, let's just take, don't worry about what the background is, where they're from, who they are. The this guy of this stars, this guy of that stars, it's they're all bakites and there's how they do it. I think James has got really good feel and vision. He can hit things. I thought Sam did some really good things today. T.C. is another guy who really came along during the spring and work constantly talking in our staff meetings about depth. We're very cognizant of the fact that the playoff situation has changed. So you have to develop that depth, you know, used to be maybe have a pair and a spare is what everybody says, but I think you may have to have more than that.
You're talking about 16, 17 games. You're you're really going to be tested that way. So I was really happy with how those young guys have come along here in the 15 training sessions that we've had. Over here to the right. Tim made the Tim May podcast. Thank you, Jerry. You have your own podcast. Yeah. Like these guys all had like a name next to their. You're a name show. Okay. That's pretty cool. He must have some juice if you got the name in your podcast. Definitely. By the way, I like it. It's not just the lunch last hot lunch last night. It's a hot lunch line. Yeah. Just too quick. He's number one. Do you feel compelled to let these quarterbacks know where they stand? You know, it's coming up Tuesday. You know, to me, they're yeah, you know, where does that go? I mean, in your mind. Yeah, we're all sit down as a staff and visit me. Don't mind. Maybe he doesn't unbelievable job of I think all our players understand where they fit and what what the picture is. And we'll give them our assessment. This isn't. You know, we're not going to come back. But we do it after every day. They know where they stood after practice. One after two after three after four.
We grade everything. They're getting constant feedback in terms of where we are. And then after 15, which we had today. But we can't do it unless you watch the film and can can really look at the things because you may see something, but you're on the sideline. You know, why did he make that decision? Well, I couldn't really see the field safety from where he was. Okay. Now I understand why you made that decision. So, you know, what what what the meetings with all our players and that's that's always been the method. So this week during, you know, between one day through Friday. We're all scheduled. No one's going on the road recruiting until after that. But we're all a player meeting said every position. You know, offensive line defensive line linebacker safety is everybody. Everybody's going to sit down with their position coaches and know where they fit. And we see them. Do you feel a pressure with with the transfer portal looming? I mean, you've been a head coach for a long time. I mean, is that on your mind at TSD? Yeah, I think we're aware of it. I'm 100% and I don't think it's pressure. But I think you just open lines of communication and everybody knows, you know, which what your evaluation was through the training sessions that we have.
Guys, we got to have we got real quick. Last two questions. Dan Hope and then Rob Aller. Feel like you need to have a starting quarterback named by and whatever biggest things you're going to be looking for between now and then and determining who that guy's going to be. Well, between now and whatever then is we're not allowed as coaches to go back out and practice with him. You know, in college football, you get 15 training sessions in the off season. And then they'll go back to work and with Mick in the weight room and getting bigger, getting faster, getting stronger. They'll have organized activities themselves. And they do a really good job of that. But once there's a football out like we're not allowed to be there to evaluate and even assess. So they're really from a football standpoint on their own until August. So you always want to do it earlier. But I also believe every time I've been involved in this is that it kind of happens organically and authentically. You know, because the players know. If you say, hey, we decided we're going to be with Joe. And they all think it's Tim. You know, they're in the locker room with him every day.
Players understand who they'd feel is the guy. And most of the time the decision is very obvious. You know, when you just say, hey, this is where we are with it. But there's that timetable thing. I can't give you an exact timetable on that. Rob. Chip, you talk about Julian. But typically in your experience, you've done again, like Tim said a long time. How long does it take for the game to slow down for a prey on QB? I think it depends on the individual. You know, I've had some kids. Where early, you know, you were like, wow, Marcus Murray, I was like that. Remember vividly second practice. And he got to the fifth reading the progression and threw it out here in this big game. And I asked him why I do it all. I asked why. I just want to understand it. And I said, why did you do that? And he goes, I don't know what we call that defense, but there was like a lot of guys over there. And they didn't seem like there was anybody over there. But for him to process it that far, he was right.
And he came back the other day. Whether that was cover 60 other day coach, I learned what you guys call the coverages. But it all happens differently. I've got guys that for two years seem like they're just, you know, they're really struggling. And then the light bulb goes off and you go, whoa, like they got it. So everybody has different learning styles. You know, our job in the evaluation process is to identify those learning styles. So, you know, they cognitive learn, they an auditory learner, you know, do they learn by feel? Is it more a feel guy, you know, a more film guy? You know, it's all different. And I think we have to keep poking and prodding. And for us as coaches, that's the challenge too is what is their best learning style? And how can we convey it? Because education basically is just a transportation knowledge. But it really doesn't matter what I know or what Ryan knows, it matters what they know. So that's always kind of what we're working on and studying and thinking about and kind of where we are and how much can they handle. And then how much is too much, you know, because this may be a great play. I agree 100%.
But if he don't feel it's a good play, then why is it in? You know, I mean, and that's this whole feeling of process that we're all learning awesome. They're learning awesome. We're learning them. So, I have identities. So do coaches really? Running quarterbacks. Is that something you've always sort of lean toward or is it year by year case by case? What advantages do you like about it? Because all your guys can run a little bit. Yeah, I think a running quarterback causes problems for defense. So when plays break down, the unscheduled plays, you know, if you just go back to the recent Super Bowl on that last drive, the two big plays were my home's run. But Patrick my home is another runner. Andy's not calling design quarterback runs for Pat. But when the defense matches up and plays two men and turns their back to the quarterback, well, maybe the best decision is to take off. You know, the second one he took out, I'm like, he may score. You know, a lot of guys go and they want a hook side. And there's times where you have to understand if you do have a running quarterback, we talk about the best ability is availability.
You know, you're not lowering your shoulder and taking people on, but we are always looking for quarterbacks that have the ability to run. We're not looking for running backs that can throw. So you're not going to see us 20 times a game or run in the quarterback. There are people that run offensive styles and are really successful with it. But with this group we have right now, that's not. Now they can hurt you with the feet. We'll did it when he was at case date, you know, obviously, Devon took off a couple of times today, air took off a couple of times today. Lincoln's a really, really good athlete. Julian can run, but, you know, we're not calling design quarterback runs. You know, you're not going to see. You know, I tremendous amount of respect for coach Hayes and the legacy that he left here. The straight T is about as far as we go. We are not going single wing. We are not going to snap and run quarterback ice on quarterback power. So, but it is a, it's another weapon, you know, and if it also keeps defense is honest, you know, if your defense event is going to continue to bend from the quarterback, pulls it, he's on the edge and he's getting first downs. Well, then the defensive end has to stay outside and contain the quarterback. Well, then we can run the ball up and hand the ball off. Sometimes in our running game, our quarterback really is a blocker.
He's responsible for a defender of the defender was cheating and fitting in on the run. Well, then his responsibility is to make, make the defense be honest and that's really air did that a couple of times today. We had a block that safety was sticking his face in there. So, we took off around the edge. What happens in next play the defense is wider. Then what do we get to do? We got a chance to hand the ball off to the running man. Great coach. Thank you so much for your time and thank you for being a buck. I was definitely addressed here. This is pretty easy. I think Austin Saribel stepped up in a big way with Donnie being out. And then, you know, Carson can play both guard and center, which is good. And, you know, we've actually, you know, said it's done a nice job as well. But it was good to see Austin, you know, he moved from guard to tackle a couple times. And even with the ones he was in there battling his tail off. So I think we have built some depth there. But again, you know, we got to go play some games and see what. Rob all right. I'm what's the main thing you want to see out of here?
Yeah, you know, again, whether it's whatever happened last year is last year, but I know that the message to our to our offensive line is we want to play. I want to be the hardest playing offense line in the country. Now, we've got to play with technique, but at the end of the play, like knock the line of scrimmage back and play with your hair on fire. It's hard as you possibly can. There's a lot that goes with the playing in the offensive line. It's all the communication is a lot of things that have to get into place. I think Seth has done a nice job of communicating and understands the offense better now. He takes control up front and brings everybody together, which is great. But to me, like that's it. Now, we could list a bunch of other things, but to me, we've got to move the line of scrimmage. We've got to be just playing with our hair on fire and knocking people back and playing physical. And that's the start to game. That's the end of the game. This is a destination spot for why we see what we can do. What I do. Maybe not for online. You see that definitely. How do you get over that? No, no, I don't see it that way at all. I think. You know, we'll see what we got this year, but I feel like, you know, we've got some really good young players in the system.
I think that we should have the best offensive line in the country. That's that's the standard here has been for a long time. And so we'll keep pushing towards that this year. And I think everybody in that room will take the same thing. Tony Gerbin. I was a situation that will line back. Yeah. So, uh, sunny has really stepped up and played well. He's made this transition from safety to linebacker. Very well. I think he did a nice job in the spring, but you could definitely see as he went into the summer, just, you know, bigger, stronger, being more comfortable closer to the line of scrimmage. It's different when you're closer to the line of scrimmage. I was doing a better job getting his hands on, you know, on offense alignment and getting off of blocks. He's in a better job doing a better job with his hands. I think he understands the communication. The linebackers always have to be involved with the front. They can be involved and fit into the back end. He's doing that.
You know, I think he's, you know, looking forward to play a playing in a game and, you know, getting an idea of what it all looks like. I can tell you in practice, he's playing fast, he's playing violent. And I think he's, you know, he does a nice job of taking the meeting to the field, being very intentional about his work, but playing really hard. Yeah, I haven't talked to Jim because, you know, we'll make that final decision here over the weekend, but he's certainly the leader in the club boss. Can you tell Ryan, I mean, Seth McLaughlin, can tell he's been there, done that. Is he, as he projected that to the offensive line, you're still, and I'm saying from a leadership standpoint, a grown man. Yes. How does that just come up? How does that show up? A bunch of ways, it's just poised. It's not getting rattled when, you know, coach parks at you. It's, you know, okay, I got this. Let me get it under control. It's seeing something in practice and being able to adjust on the move. It's being prepared when you walk on the field. It's recognizing how hard you have to play at the position. It's, you know, kind of all of those things in the one.
But he's got great communication up front. He talks to the guys. He's moving quickly in there. And when you have experience like he has, you know, the game seems to slow down at times yet. You know, he seems to be playing it at fast level. He's got a point where you got to blackstripe off and I feel like he took a step in the right direction. When you come in in the summer, it is very difficult to get on the field, especially early in the season. Whether he does or not, I will see. But if he continues to practice the way that he's been practicing, then he'll give himself a chance to be in the rotation, maybe with the season or later in the season, which is similar to some of the wider series he had before. You know, you've seen some of those guys get some reps really in the season, but then make an impact later in the season.
I think that's probably more his path right now, you know, shows up and starts doing great. And you know, we'll, you know, we'll give him the reps he deserves or like Jeremiah is in a different situation because he came in here in January. And it was a little bit ahead. Anybody who comes in and January to me, I don't look at them as a freshman anymore. They've been here. They're in the program. And we expect them to contribute. I'm still in there right there talking and communicating, but in the skirmishes we've had, it's, you know, it's been offense very defense. It's been mostly been in the offensive side still kind of going through all those types of things. And there's a lot to work through this year just with the playcloth and then to want to mean by that is, you know, the close by communication inside of 15 goes off.
There's a lot of things that go on there. We don't really get notification on that. So I'm trying to, you know, just help chip with that and some communication that way, personnel. But I'm going to be very much involved with special teams. I think if the two minute warning, there's some strategic things that are going to go on in the half end of the game that you know, you're ever really being involved with. But to your point, just overall just looking guys in the eye and making sure that, you know, they have to right look in their eye to, you know, that, you know, they, they understand, you know, with the situation, what's going on, the game, you know, that happens sometimes to young players, you know, they just like playing the next play. And that's not just how that's not how it works. We'll get to win the situations. And so, you know, all those things will come into play and making in game adjustments, you know, be involved with all three phases, you know, watching, you know, the game in a tab with the try to identify what happened in the last series. I think all those things would be happening. Right now, Nick is going to be the start.
And, you know, that competition going to next week, but right now, as we head into the weekend, he is the starter and the plan is ready to go first, part of what we go on Saturday and Saturday. He's got a strong leg. He's made it a good transition into the country, but also just playing, you know, football and not Australian, which is very, very different. The, you know, snap to kick has really improved, you know, that was one thing as he's a taller guy. So the ball has to get out of his, you know, get off his foot faster. I think he's done that his hang time has been good and he's been more consistent. You'll see, you know, he'll kick a few that'll just go right out of the stadium. And he just got a strong, strong leg. So we're looking for that consistency. He's shown that here most recently. So he's got the upper hand right now. And last question, Jeremy Birmingham. Well, Ryan, I don't know if it's because Will maybe took a little bit longer to make a decision in December of them, some of the other top of the line quarterback, who was doing it or because maybe there was a thought he wasn't going to be the starter.
It can't stay this year, but it seems like people have viewed him kind of as a game manager type of quarterback. After eight months with him, where do you see his ceiling and what, what, what is Will's special faith to you and where do you see him taking himself? I see a bunch of traits there. I think the first trade is size. He can stand in the pocket and he's strong. So I mean, that's the first thing he noticed about him. Again, whether it's standing in the pocket with poise, I think that's another trait that he has that's excellent. He feels the rush, but he stands right in there. I think the next trade is just, you know, his top end speed. He can run 22 miles an hour at that size, which there's not a lot of guys who can do that. So I think that's an extraordinary trade. And I would, I would say his overall leadership command in the huddle is is another, you know, something that he's really, you know, grown into in the last few months and he's been here.
And then his accuracy, he's been very accurate since he's been here. And when he knows what's going on and he can't just fail what's happening. I mean, it looks right. Just feel it. And he can hurt you, you know, a bunch of different ways. So, you know, his ceiling, that that's, that's going to be kind of, you know, up to how he plays this season. But, you know, I see a player who has a lot of great skills that, you know, translates well to the next level. So, we'll see. But I know his first focus is on winning games around here. Hopefully I have 10, right? Symbola and the goal line and Donovan Jackson. Please, I mean, you have nerves naturally. That's the first complaint I was good. I was rolling. Also, it was a weird, you know, it was also the first start. Yeah. You, yeah, it's, but like, I prepared well and camp and practice all week. And I was, I was ready.
Yeah. I have two multi-year starters. I did a lot. I mean, I couldn't ask them, hey, what we got here, but I was prepared well. I mean, I was telling Jimmy and said, like, hey, we were blocks. Probably emotional. What is it? What is it? What does it mean to start a game? It was always my dream to come here and play and start and having that like me. I just keep going, keep building those days into games and keep building. What a much younger Austin. No, not I don't think even I told like me, I asked my younger self, even committed. I wouldn't believe that now having a couple of starts. Awesome. Has this happened faster than you? I guess you're technically a sophomore. No, I knew that year two, I was going to see you some playing time. Now starting week one year two, I didn't see that, but like I was ready in spring.
Ball, like I knew I was going, I was going to play some stuff. What does it mean to you to not only get the opportunities to play, but like you play well enough now, coaching staff trust you. I guess it shows like my preparation, my hard work and just everything I put into this and I just finally show up on a field. There are moments, the top season, the end of the spring, and the end of the season. I don't realize that you could play at this high level, high up with the ones. Yeah, but definitely was in training camp. I mean, blocking highly can tie every day. It feels a lot of confidence and doing it well and not getting balled or anything. There's defensive tag wasn't that easy. Hero and Jason Morin, all those guys, pretty much anyone on the defensive line gets your face all the time. And Kay and Mack as well.
Yeah. I was more collected, how about the stability? How much can he help you? He helped me a lot and I'm proud that he's our starting center, not someone else's, but I mean, he's like the captain of the line. He's another voice on the line with guys like Josh Fryer and Josh Simmons, Donnie and Tiger. That means another voice and another captain on the look, ways of having the men and women. It's much experience helped. During the year, the middle of the season. He can tell you, like before the play was going on, how to block someone, like what you need to do. And it helps a lot. Tiger is talking about how calm he is. How much does that benefit of you? You have a guy who's kind of been there and seen a lot of us. It makes us more calm, especially me and Tay, that's our first start. So we were up here with Seth. He brought us down and we were like five.
Our emotions weren't high. We were settling. Is that like something he tells you? Is that something you pick up on by how he's acting? How do you kind of mean sense what he's trying to do? It's by how he's acting. And what I mean, him, when we're on the side of him, both Josh, Donnie, like he was telling us, like, hey, we're cool. Like we got it, but it's pretty much like everyone. Oh cool group. How much do you do that? As a first time starter, how much did you end that? Me in a lot. That was my first time ever using iPads. We didn't use the iPads in high school, but I mean, you can say like try to remember the defense. You can just come on a silent and bring up what's playing the help of really not. Probably the first or second after that. I thought we'd say our seventh. Awesome. Thank you very much. Thanks for playing right here. Has you been a part of the settling in the go? I would say maybe.
I don't know, but I mean, when I first heard you got the job, I was really excited because I'm one of those guys who's the tempo. I can run with the tempo. You know, I mean, I'm playing basketball all life in seventh football and I feel like just the fast pace often so we're running. It really fits the guys we have right now. I'm really excited for that. I know you can throw a football like 65 yards, but can you kick a football? 75 yards of Lincoln. No. Probably question. Lincoln, what was your question? How is your, your roommate? He's a blessing, man. I can't complain. He's a great guy. What's his name? His name's Lincoln. Teen Hoes. Oh, he's cleaner. I think we're both really clean. That's why we kind of picked each other's roommates because we're very clean and we don't like our words really messy. Well, it's true though. It's true. They're both pretty clean stuff. Luke, are you still cross-training in Tag Bullsom or have you just been all guard this spring? Oh, so far I've been all guard. I really don't know. Like I said, I'm taking it practice by practice.
I could end up being back in Tag Bullsom, but you know, I'm just really focused in on this past practice and the next one would be fun. What do you mean? You're on the right track. You're on the right track. Yeah. Oh, that mean a lot. You know, you put a lot of work in to play here. And it's been a dream just for being in Ohio kid. I'm from Ohio kid's perspective. I mean, that's the biggest wish possible. I would say that's going to be pretty cool. What was it like just last year at first game getting on the field for the first time? It didn't fly me. This is going to be a weird answer, but it could feel like I was playing a game that that makes sense. I was pretty locked in. I felt like just no anxiousness, no stress, no nothing. I just went in that first game and was like, shoot out here now. It's time to roll. You know, it didn't really hit me. I was like, it didn't even hit me off of it. I'm like, what'd you feel there? And if like, get out there at any end, I was just like, honestly, I don't know. I felt less nervous than I did in high school and that makes no sense. What is it? What is it? What is it? What is it? What is it? What is it? What is it?
It's just a matter of time. A lot. I mean, I'm learning from Josh Aniston. I think Friars is one of my biggest role models here. He's my big brother. When I first played football. Tell him I'm a pedid. I don't know. I'm a pedid. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. So, yeah, Pedid and Austin, those are my guys, man. I mean, even Miles too. I mean, all three of them. That's those are my roommates and they're progressing every day as well on. And I'm excited to see where they can get to. And I'm excited to play on the field with them. I'm trying to know what you're going to be after. Oh yeah, you know, it's been really helpful. You know, just keep in my mind, just settled and straightforward on the next play. What do you think? Biggest. It's a great question. Like I said, I mean, I just need to take consistent in my work. I think that's the biggest thing for me is just taking consistent and worried about the next play. I think it's actually about those big runs. And you guys started turning out. It's hand plus red. Did it beat off the each other? Absolutely. I mean, when you see defensive. And you see defensive start arguing with each other and things like that.
I mean, I've. Mixed a lot of you. You know, have those 10 11. Playground. What was that like? It's a western vision game. It started to feel like you guys were feeling. I think that first game. I think that's good. Like good mouth. They think that's good. I mean, it feels good to rip off these runs because I mean, we put on so much work. I mean, practice and, you know, seeing. I'm not. I'm not. I'm not. I'm working on. I'm. So, reserved since that. This offensive line wise is y'all prepared this week with Jonathan back in there. That's all. First half really this season. I'm not. You know, it's not. Prick and Austin. It's just more of down with Jackson. Pretty season. All American. It's. I'm enjoying the group, you know, done with Jackson's a very good football player. When he's on the field, he makes his presence up. I mean, we've all been training on my. There's no margin. I just go through. And you know, we know it can be. Yeah, there's a secret. There was a sense of watching you guys. I was like, you know, we're even more of a force.
It felt like watching you guys. Maybe even. Did it feel like. Yeah, I mean, we put in a work during practice. We practice really hard coach. They really challenge us to practice hard. Positions coaches really challenge us to practice hard. So, I was just a result of it. When it's rolling like that, what does it feel like being in the midst of that being. It's us. It's. When you work hard for something and you're able to see like what comes out of it, like, there's no better feeling in it. I'm. No, I mean, I was really funny to see. What has Seth been off on? Brought to you guys for the first few games. What's it been like playing next year for the last two? He's. You know, I'm. I'm not. I'm not. I'm not. I'm not. I'm not. I'm not. I'm not. I'm not.
You know, he's really calm and you start with you. Never see real panic and having a guy like that messy when, you know, you're haven't really played his many amazing snaps. I mean, there's no one outside rather absent from my left and so far. And Seth, you know, those guys, they do so much for this offensive line. People talk about his intelligence really kind of showing up and in the film room and on the field. But where have you noticed that intelligence and how has that helped you? Yeah, like I said, and crunch time, you know, when things aren't exactly looking like how we practice it, you know, we're having a guy like that, like, we'll do this, this, this, and then, you know, we execute it. Having a guy like that, like, there's none better than that. What's my favorite cake? No. Right, brother. Uh-huh. Uh-huh, and now, thank you. I almost came back to Cobblesson to get some more.
Yeah. Tell you what you're looking at Marshall, they got a couple guys on the deep roots of the road that have big 10 bodies. Absolutely. What do you see when you look at their territory from the scene? 15, 7, a couple of those guys are pretty big. Yeah, those guys here. Yeah, I'm sure you're right. Yeah, I'm sure you're right. Yeah, I'm sure you're right. Yeah, I'm sure you're right. Yeah, I'm sure you're right. Yeah, those guys here, they're real players. They're real players. You can sell their coach well. They go hard, you know, they're real players over there. We've been practicing to the best of our abilities, you know, and the spec. And I'm prepared for that. You see, they play Virginia, Texas last year. Notre Dame, Liverpool, Liverpool. They take the lead. Yeah, they play good ball over there. And, you know, their defense plays hard.
They challenge teams, you know, sometimes they might be overlooked. They still challenge teams. You can sell they come out there with the mentality like no matter who's in front of us. I'm going to go home and ask this guy. Okay, let me ask you. What has been the biggest challenge? I mean, the actions right there right in front of you right now, which is kind of a good thing and kind of a bet. And I'm going to shake off the rest, you know, kicking back in it inside. Can you talk to your coach? Yeah, I mean, I hear from Chris every once in a while trying not to bother him too much. It's always good to hear from guy like that guys like the one, even Matt Jones returning back. All right, Tiger, thank you. Appreciate it. Daniel Storchell, who else in the field, Tiger? And for this year, just be able to contend to that job. Just skill stun.
I think it's a lot of my weight. My height is more regard height. But I'm fast on my feet and I just need to use the technique and sometimes sometimes like basketball. I want to be on that just like defend, but you know, you got to stay in the stage where you're sometimes lost. Exactly. Yeah, that's a great question. I mean, I feel like these two can enter that for the beer right now. I think KK and Hero can answer that. I don't know what to say about that. What do you guys think? What do you guys think about that? I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I'm talking about life. You get the basketball key like you know. You can just see what this is. I mean, the human color is really fast. Just the whole way I'm sure it gets a hand. And he got the grip right in the back. He doesn't give up on the play. Like you said, he's going to go in there and watch the film. He's going to get the beer, and it gets better.
And he should see it on the beer man. From night to night, you can see the pool being like a game. Hero can you spot the wrong guy off the machine? He's something like a coach, man. Just something like a coach. I'm a chipkull he's in for the change. your mind about maybe like the idea of tackle versus guard because obviously his offense of federal itch and sport like yeah offense flying play one game has you been a part of the settle in the guard? That's um I want to say maybe I don't know but I mean when I'm when I'm pretty sure you got the job I was really excited because I'm one of those guys who's the tempo I can run with the tempo you know I mean I'm I'm playing basketball all life instead of football and I feel like just the fast pace often so we're running really fits the guys we have right now I'm really excited for that. I know you can throw for ball like 65 yards but can you kick it for ball 75 yards and blink it just Probably question Lincoln what's your question? How is your your room at the beauty? He's a blessing man I can't complain. He's a great guy.
His name's Lincoln. Keen Holt's Ooh. He's cleaner. I think we're both really clean. That's why we kind of pick each other's roommates because we're very clean and we don't like our rooms really messy. Well it's true though. It's the truth. They're both pretty clean. Luke are you still cross training in TACO? Some or if you just been all guard this break? Oh so far I've been all guard. I really don't know like I said I'm taking it practice by practice. I could end up being back attack by good and not but you know I'm just really focused in on this past practice and connection with some Yeah. Oh that mean a lot. You know you put a lot of work in to play here. And it's been a dream just for being in Ohio kid. It's from a high kid's perspective. It's I mean that's the biggest wish possible. I would say that's going to be pretty cool. What was it like last year first game getting on the field for the first time? It didn't like this is going to be a weird answer but it feel like I was playing a game if that makes sense.
I was pretty locked in. I felt like just no anxiousness and no stress and no nothing really. I just went in that first game was like shoot out here now. It's time to roll. You know it didn't really hit me. I was like it didn't even hit me after. But no mom was like what'd you feel there? And if like getting out there at the end of it just like honestly. I don't know. I felt less nervous that I didn't high school and that makes no sense. A lot. I mean I'm learning from Josh and Austin. I think prior to one of my biggest role models here is my bigger big brother. When I first came in. I'm a PD. I don't want to do it. OK. Yeah, no. Yeah. So yeah, PD and Austin those are my guys man. I mean even Miles too. I mean all three of them. That's those are my roommates and they're progressing every day as well on. And I'm excited to see where they where they can get to. I'm excited to play with them. Oh yeah, you know it's been a really helpful. You know, just keep in my mind just settled and straight forward on the next blood. What do you think the biggest? It's a great question.
Like I said, I mean, I just need to stay consistent in my work. I think that's the biggest thing for me is just taking system and worry about the next blood. To my game and I was I was like whoa. I never had that happen. No other school like just Ohio State field came in my game. I was like, wow, that's crazy. Do you like, I mean, I'm required. But also do you like that? Do you want everything that comes in? I do, but at the same time, I just like to be a normal person. I don't really like that. What's going on in your field? Are you a showman? I mean, I was described as kind of like your art form. Yeah, I mean, yeah, I want to feel I'm a little bit more chipier a little bit, but sometimes I still be quite on the field. What's your competitive part of you? What did that one that you noticed out about yourself? I've been having that. I was like eight, nine years old. I mean, happens, I mean, just high-end house, or it just to be competitive. That's the reason why I chose to come to Ohio State just to compete each and every day against the go against the best DB group in the country.
I was going to say is it been enhanced in the last several months? I mean, you want to get in the nuts and then, then sell burnt, etc. Oh yeah, for sure. Just going to get into God the best two DBs in the country. I mean, that's the reason I came here. Just going to get God just go maybe better each and every day. Yesterday, what now played the right zone? Yeah. Yeah. You didn't say a word. And then the two plays later, you called, or I'd have bought you a card. Yeah. You didn't say a word that. I said, I said, well, he said, when he defed little boy, he said, I'm here. I said, OK, I'm going to be back. And I said, I'm going to be back. Then when I'm going to be able to play, I just walked off. I said, when you talk about, I said, I told you I'm coming back, right? What's it like to be back to the car now, say, bring us to the SFV. It feels great just us three to be on the field together. We're going to make a lot of plays this year. What did you learn from that? I learned a lot, especially from Cardinal, because we both play outside. So me just learning from him and the things he learned, he just teaching me.
And he knows my home, my stuff about that. So he just teaching me the game for sure. What specifically did you got better at that? And compared to what you first got. I said my footwork, that's the biggest game. My coach at law was looking at that's one thing I need to get better on. So I mean, I just worked on that in all seasons and just got better over time. What can still be your work ethic in here? Still my work at the end. I mean, just I really don't know. I can't really answer that. But it just, it's just in me like, I just want to work. That's one thing. I think I say I get it from my dad. My dad really the reason why I worked so hard. Because since I was like eight years old, he just wanted me to just work and be the best at what I do. So I mean, I really, I said, get from my dad. Why do you see the clip of my day? You know, like on sunny day when I'm showing up. Yeah. Yeah. Yes, anything. How close did you come to? I wasn't, I wasn't sleeping at all. I don't know why. We made it seem like it was that. I was a bugger and that's it.
How did your dad set me? He said a big example on me. Me just, I ain't go say it was only just my dad. It was me. I have a cousin's name. You know, it's really pretty for the Seattle Seahawks. So I was, I looked at him as well. I mean, seeing what he was doing at West Virginia. We're taking Austin and Steadman Bayley. So I mean, he was a motivation for me. And just all the guys that grew up before me and my regardless area, our brother area for sure. I mean, just looking at those guys. Guys like I say Brandon and us for sure. He was a class ahead of me. So I seen the games he was doing in the eighth grade. And I was just like, whoa, I mean, that's something I want to do. What do you think about the expectations for you? I mean, Chris Carter on my podcast a few weeks ago. He's actually the big, he'll be a factor from the first place first game, et cetera. Those are big expectations. You mean Brakes those? I really don't. I mean, I know it's big expectations for me because you know, no one playing the country coming in and all the hype around me. So I mean, I just try to block out all that stuff and just focus on the main thing, just the team.
And I receive a room and a locker room. And no just first game come if I don't see the expectations that you have for me. I mean, I don't really care. I just want to go out there and win a game. I'm going to have a confidence in those roles that for you. When people like Chris Carter, Marvin Harrison Jr. are saying, this guy can maybe next break a sea renal house. I mean, it's something great. I mean, I just got to go out there on the field and just show you guys that I could beat it. That's probably the greatest, the hardest they've received with a company here. So I mean, it's a blessing and have that. And that's got to go out there and play and show you guys. What does it mean? It's a lot for me to beat. Was it the first freshman? Yeah, I mean, just that's aggressive for me. For sure, just shows all the hard work that I put in and I mean, on the way to the room. What's so much sure? My dad really, I mean, the maturity, just be older than, don't add my age.
I go to my age. I mean, a lot of people tell me that I don't add my age. I'm way, way beyond my years. I mean, just, you just got to be mature and, you know, don't add like a kid. What is the couple more questions for Jeremiah? What is it about you? It's about 70, 30. It's about 70, 30, 30. It's just, no, when I see a 50, 50 ball, I mean, I just think it's, I got to make the play. It's on me, you know, matter how the ball is. If it's a bad ball, I just feel like I got to make that play. No matter what the certain sense of this, you know, matter if it's a bad ball, I feel like the ball is mine. It's no matter who I'm fronting me or no, no matter. We're getting between the ball and the fender come from. I mean, that kind of sets you apart in my opinions, and I'm just going to say that I'm not going to be able to do that. Oh, yeah, I did. Always had that next. I was like, since I started to play with C. I like eight years, nine years old. I just found the way to, you know, make sure that ball is mine when it's in the air.
And I just got to always find a way to find a way to make my quarterback look good. I was looking forward to talking to Jeremiah, saying, go, Howard's looking forward to thinking so more confident. Oh, yeah, for sure. He definitely made a big jump from industry. I like his confidence. He's starting to talk more, talk a lot of mess on the field. And I like that about my quarter, but I love quarter, about some like the talk and, you know, just get around his prayers and make him feel good about himself. Oh, he talked about the field, you know, just, he just said a lot of stuff I can't say, but he'll talk for sure. Jeremiah, thank you very much. Thank you guys. I was on me. My split was two, he wanted me to come my spit down. So that I was, that was on me. That wasn't a real, I was in it. The result of that play is science. It's clear that will the offense record is if you're single, about one on one, press man, they're willing to take that shot to you every time. And were you expecting to have this bigger role in the offense?
Not at all. Not at all. Just coming in, you know, this is a Ohio State. And just all the receivers that been here and I was here before I got here. So I did not have no expectation that was having the role that I had right now. So I mean, I just get all the things that got into the field of being this position right now. Is that so real to you then to to be putting up kind of numbers you already have? Oh, yes, for sure. I mean, but no job, nothing I still got to do. It's me finishing him. What does this say about the trust that he has? He tells me a lot each and every day that you know, single, single covers one on one. I'm going to you don't matter who or you don't matter. Just throwing it up. You just go me actually got to make a play as well. You realize that the rest of you. Was there a moment of spring or this drink camp or? I say, I say for a camp. That's really when he was just trusting me just throwing it out and I'm just going to go get it. Yeah, for you. On the place that day with the thing you said you're supposed to see why? Yeah, to why. Yeah. I should have cut my split.
Now I think I was, you know, like bottom of the numbers. I should have my like numbers plus numbers plus two. I believe yeah, something like that. So that's the reason why he just paid over top. And that's who is the. In a session. We look at your numbers. You gave. History as a partial. You know, I was. This is the whole coach. One program. You feel like a normal parchment. I mean, you're an acceptable freshman for this universe. Yeah. National. I mean, I love it. I still feel like I'm. Just a regular freshman, but you know, a lot of people say I'm not, but. I mean, just the role that I have just coming in. It's just. It's been a blessing. I just can't. Thank. The can't say it's on me. It's on God and just the coaches for trusted me to have a put a freshman out there. And just to go out there and make plays and just do what I do. Hearing from your teammates. The golf and confidence in you, but. You said you didn't expect to have. Playing time. So.
What did you actually expect? How much do you think you would have gotten? Not that much because you know, you got you got a car. They'll take you got mecha. Google. I came back. You got bringing in that big. You're all. Jaden ballot. All on God. So really my mentality is just coming in just working learning and just. No special teams and make plays on special teams. A lot of monetize was. Expect. Expect this. Big. Big. Just watching them. They. We better. And last. We played. As we could they said so. Man, it's going to be a good game. You got to go to. Be a higher state as always. Better be. As a. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Oh, yeah, for sure. We hungry right now. I can see in the air. Everybody else. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. Thank you.
I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. You. Well, I'm. I'm. Good to see you. Yeah. You're a. I've always had to. You were to do make sure that. Yeah. I'm. I'm. Get. Yeah. Thank you. play no matter what. I mean I played Saturday. I thought I could have courted but you know it was a pass in the front but it touched my hands I should have courted. Dan, hold on, let me worry. Jeremiah, there's a lot of discourse from fans this week about you not winning the Sean Alps and the freshman year award. What's your thoughts on that? I mean, me calling is a great player as well. I mean I can't really not kill. No Sean is a great guy. I talked to him two weeks ago. It's a great guy. I learned a lot of things from him outside of football as well. So I mean I really can't focus on that. I'm just worried about beating Oregon and just going out there to pass a deal and just put on the show. Anybody else in question? Tom Moore, fuck I huddled. You mentioned getting ragged and it's like Michigan.
Is that frustrating when you see that from the bottom teams? Yeah. Is that frustrating? Is that you know you and it feels like you always think you're open or are you still open when you're ragged? Oh yeah for sure. I'm still open. I'm out of my bracket or not. I mean they just came out with a good game plan to bracket me in a mecca. And you know, I mean just you know things didn't go as planned as we thought it would but you just got to keep moving on. Just move forward. Steven Hellway, 24-7 sports. Did you mind that the two touchdown plays that you had with Wil Howard? How many times do you think you guys rep that to get those were perfect throws, perfect patterns? And you beat your guy off the line of scrimmage just how many times do you think and what does it take to perfect that? Oh I think we rep the least. I don't know how many times and practice over the weeks that we had off. I mean just came down to you know they press me we we taking a shot that's what they told me uh the weeks we was off. And he told me her before the game in the locker room I just got to give you a shot and that's what he did and I just made a play.
If I can ask the first game against Oregon just how tough was that challenge against their secondary? I know you have to pin them to get into the game but you guys made plays all day long against them. Just what what's your thought about the challenge those guys gave you? I say the challenge is going to be you know a good challenge they have some great global guys there. Jabal Muhammad number seven, Niko Rhee, the other corner of Manon over there they a great global guys. I mean probably the best we go see all year for sure. We just got a good name you know Bio Haya State that's all. Tony Gurdman, Buckahe Hellenic. Can you everybody have a, so why are you not open? Uh huh. You know probably when the whole team on me I should say uh uh I mean I'm always open for me for sure. Um me just no throw the ball in my area I'm going to find a way to make a play as I was honest. Step on christening, leave one dot com. You talked earlier about you know some of the great athletes that you got challenged and you aspire to be like I guess where's that confidence kind of come from for you?
How long have you had that confidence that you know you have the ability to be one of the greats in this sport? Uh I mean a lot of people tell me that I'm going to be great at what I do since I was about going to high school a lot of people tell me that um me just you know football is all I know and that's all I really want to do like I live, breathe, sleep football like that's all I really care about don't care about everything outside of football like football is all I know and I just want to play football rest of my life. Thanks for all of our lettering girl. You seem like you have a role where we try to connect on some of those deep balls throughout the year you'll be able to finally do those in that moment and kind of carry that forward. Was it the same on the way that you had been able to continue to progress just in chemistry? Um I mean just you know the weeks that we had all we were just working on deep deep shots uh cause they tell us uh in meetings that we have uh we got to take shots down fill um we just got to connect on them and you know will tell me before uh before the games like I said um you just got to throw the ball out then just give me a chance and I'm gonna make a play for you
that's what that's what you told me and I just got to make a play for you. Adam King don't you be honest? We can all joke we can all talk about the expectations and the start of this become you know you were just 13 games how do you handle that? I mean just a fragment how do you take all these expectations know when you step on the field you're always open and still go out there and play? Uh I mean expectations I mean I can't know how you'll stay for a reason that's what I wanted um when it be challenged I wanted the expectation. Expectations I should say um I mean coach hotline just helped me uh throughout the whole year just preparing me for each game each week uh mega booka uh carnival tape bringing it in is really the whole receiver on just helped me uh stuff I don't really know about uh it just helped me throughout the whole week and you know I can't really say it's all on me because my talents but they really been a big part of the reason I'm having the season that I'm having for sure. I am Andrew Gillette, Cleveland.com. Jeremiah over a thousand years, full sessions in your first year when you look back at your
freshman year what was the most difficult part about adjusting to the college and what was the part that you had not you know the hardest part about trying to train this one? Uh learning that playbook. Uh uh a playbook is something else uh just coming in uh spring ball uh me just new plays in every week I'm like whoa what is this like this new plays every day in coach hotline like you we go you go be good uh we got no summer fall camp you go be great so I mean just you know that's it that's definitely what's the hardest part just learning to playbook and a lot of other things has to say for sure. How long did you get that down pad how long did you take me to come to playbook? Uh I'm pretty I'm pretty sure I got it down pad right now but uh net season I really want to learn everything the HZ uh yeah I really want to learn everything in the uh playbook for net sure for sure. That might be 24-7 sports. You mentioned how many guys it might take because you did not feel open so when you are one-on-one and Will's talking about when he sees you be one-on-one what is going through your mind as you wind up
and realize there's one guy covering. Wind that's all I could say. When that's a uh coach hotline uh we do something like in a hotel uh Friday night before the game he asked me like a question like you get one-on-one something like that he asked me uh what do you do I say wind and everybody just start laughing I don't know where I really like it's true like you got a wind you're one-on-one uh about it so yeah. Oh my god for the right Bill Landis, King of the North. Jeremiah didn't move to your round so I'm gonna send a seed to the point where you get a couple matchups against linebackers. Yeah. Uh what goes through your mind when you find yourself matched up against a linebacker? Uh I just started laughing in my head a little bit um um I mean linebackers can't really cover uh receivers like that so I just know like it's I'm most likely gonna be open um but you know they just try to move me around a lot because you know people try to bracket me when I'm outside just alone by myself so that's why they just move me around a lot. Or less, Caleb and Warren, the Landis. Jeremiah you mentioned the most difficult part of your freshman campaign as they
were learning the playbook what has been the best part so far? My way is gonna rub off on people eventually um and I would also say that you know you kind of have to understand who you're talking to you know people certain stuff makes different people tick so you gotta gotta know you guys you know if you gotta get harder on somebody to to make them go or if you gotta kind of relate to them and you know pull them aside have to talk so um I think that all goes um into leadership and you have to be able to that has to be a skill that you have to be able to develop. What's the deal? How much coach day now is he's a true hit coach? How he's given the play college duties and all that stuff? What's been different about him? Um I want to say you know too much has has necessarily changed but you can tell you how you're tremendous trust in coach Kelly um and what he's what he's gonna do in the uh kind of the schemes and everything that he's brought into our program so um the fact that you know he has such confidence in him and his play calling ability makes us tremendously confident so um coach day is has always been coached to Ian's can continue to stay that way um but I'm glad uh he's able to you know focus more on what he needs to focus on.
Okay I'm just Caleb Browns coming back to the question. Um he's kind of a field general in a sense kind of the quarterback on that side a lot of people might may think just you know the Mike linebacker and we have Cody Simon who does that as well but um Caleb's kind of that for our secondary kind of make sure things are clicking on all cylinders and uh he's just a very cerebral kid very smart and he's able to kind of take control of the defense so make make the right calls make the right checks so uh he's definitely annoying for the office to deal with but it makes us better. The challenge is that basically in fact you have anyway uh you're very worried where you are and where you are going to be up the one job running as you know where you are. I would say impacting entire offense um it's not like you know we're not oblivious to the fact of the caliber of player he is but um you know as as a offense you you come out and you expect to execute on anybody who's lined up a question so that your first catch yeah I never really thought about like that but um we definitely come uh come a long way um since my freshman year um thankful to the Lordeys kept me all these years and come ahead
on straight and allow me to you know develop into the person that I am now um but so you know coming full circle it is really surreal moments of being my senior year playing against you know the three-bargona first catch me so it's really cool. I remember Kyle getting yelled at he was a ball he was not supposed to throw and I also remember um getting pushed out at like the one or two year line so that's kind of a bittersweet memory but um it was a great memory I mean I have to say yes if I don't think I should explore it I don't think I should be playing football. How have you been? Who's uh my my my my my came in he kind of has all the intangibles of his year you can tell he just loves the game the way he goes about his business um he runs every route to perfection he's a he's a you know very cerebral kid um and every time he gets on the field he expects perfection so um he's just got to continue to develop continue to work and I'm really excited to see what he's able to do for us. Look at how much he seems to your eyes when it's grow over camp to be able to put this opportunity
in the start of the day. Yeah um I think you know it's no secret that he has all the physical capabilities that you would want or receive a really any position you could play because there's another football field with his athletic ability but um so a lot of it for him was putting together the mental piece of the game you know not just understanding what he has on a specific play but the whole concept understanding defense it's all that type of stuff so um there's nothing really that can get you ready for that moment for your first night in college because it is different than high school but um you know once he wants to get acclimated gets used to it I have no I have no doubts it's gonna take off for us and do some many things. I know you seem faith continuing to bring the team together right? Yeah I mean it's been a it's been a huge part of everything that we've done but a huge part of a lot of the reasons why the series came back and everything like that so we have a team by the study that we continue to do and continue to grow I'm kind of just pre-sister of the gospel to the guys on the team and um it's definitely permeated throughout the team throughout the years because you know looking back a couple years ago there wasn't that many people on the team heavily into their faith um and a lot of came a couple special people who really changed the
time and it's about program but um you know in the bible it says one man plans the other man watch but God ultimately brings a increase so um we're just trying our best to stay obedient to the Lord and he's done tremendous things. Who does choose special people you disagree with? I'll say kind of the the the founders I would say of the team's faith were definitely a master team for one Cameron Bab and Xavier Johnson so those guys. What do you view as your responsibility as a captain? Um really what I view my responsibility as a captain is just as a as a person in general is to push everybody closer to Christ um and you know by doing that I try to walk as close to Christ as I can myself I'm gonna kind of be that example and be that life where people look up to um and I think all the the basic principles that are found in the bible and the China perceived Christ we naturally naturally make you a better leader a better person better football player in a sense so um I just try my best to anyway him.
There's a talent for team which is a present for you. Yeah I mean we have specific goals going into every single week um some of our goals for this week is you know things can get sloppy in the week one you see it all across the country um you know false stars penalty is all these types of stuff so we're really just trying to be clean go out there play a fast complete football game um clicking on and firing on all cylinder so by no means are you underestimating it and you opponent we go out there on the field every Saturday despite the blue out whoever lines up the cross-room and so that's just our mentality so we're gonna hold true to them. Yeah very very unseries guy very funny guy um kind of lines the room when he walking when he walks in and um he's just he's a true joy to be around um you can kind of throw will into any setting and he's gonna get along with everybody there so um definitely up the uh
the team chemistry locker room we love having him around so we're super glad he's part of this team. passing game 13 and 16 13 20 years for the judges what allowed is the passing effect to stay that prolific as even the off-hand supply will be from the um the ball you had to come out quicker and throw by no we have to see that we're doing well in the light as you've had to be doing that for the hand and then run faster and quicker. How much do you feel like that game can be a building block for you in terms of continuing to be a big and big party off-hand? Oh I feel like each game of building by a stack each game and so like that so this uh I just made bigger plays in game so like that so I just thought I'd get another building block from the mad oh they've been doing pretty good they've been made not in stuff like that new guys new places
and stuff like that we're all trying to pick up from the injuries and stuff. Oh we just got to get in getting the box down from the water you got to get in there probably get the safety get linebackers or at the end but like that whatever they do got to do. On your touchdown catch so this is like a distance the ball will allow us to come down. Okay, I'm gonna throw it in the wind. Colonel what's it like? Did you figure the ball will be coming in sooner or later this year for follow-up? I mean you know they've got three big-time libraries that were made before five if you figure a bit it would find you insignificant and significant in time. Yeah I knew it would all come my way each and every week we have plays for each and all of us and stuff like that it just really depends on what the difference uh gives us players to give us one thing and it's not a ball goes away from me or goes comes to me and stuff like that so ultimately it's not in my decision with ball goes. And yet you're blocking a state on point so like you're blocking it is out of point.
Yeah our blocking from the wind has been a big emphasis this year and stuff like that because we lacked that pretty much all last year so they've been a big emphasis on blocking it's here for the water. And when you look at Penn State on the video what just stands out about there maybe their past will pass what you, but you're going to be personally up against them. Oh they're pretty good select points they'll play man no lies and stuff like that so we've got to win their 101's I thought it was on the perimeter. I'm similar to today I know you got to give them the game last year. Look how similar they're or to share the cornerbacks or what you made yourself last year. I'm pretty much the same man covered all around they got a little size on the foot and stuff like that they all probably pretty much the same size all around. Thank you guys. Thanks for your time. Five guys I'd say Ben at pressure he's walked away. He kind of brings some good energy. Jason Middleton right there too. He kind of oversees Max and Bronco a little bit so that's pretty fun. And then catching we all have some pretty good opportunities for catching especially in practice
we're going to make some pretty good touches. It's a very competitive three fish here. Yeah. Definitely competitive but in a good way. We're all there supportive. We all know our strength and we're all going to have to practice. We're working with each other and hoping to get better because we all know that we're moving there. I have a coaching experience on that. Something that started really well. So it was before Bronco's when I knew that Bronco's was just me first opportunity.
I was like a man. I was like one of the great things that we were able to do for him. I think that's why I'm not even telling him. And stuff. He's definitely all about top. And I like that. He's a little tough. I mean, that's what our unit is. We're turning into a tough one. You know, I think that's what we're talking about. Okay. First lesson. I would say we definitely have won. But it started in this way. That's where it was started. I just wanted to go for it. Just, you know, going for it. I mean, I want to really say that it's real. And the toughness, that's real. And the talent building is right there. So, you know, if it's a laugh, I would fall star. That's all.
Is that, is that, you know, those are. But I would say our Hindi, kind of, drills it in for us from toughness. Because our Indian's probably the toughest. Don't, you know, pull reps. A little bit of intelligence with blockers. And I ask you, working with our data and getting it to, you know, practice work. And you know, the slow team, there's a really going to get some of this. Yeah. How much was your, uh, come to your family? Been, uh, really great resource. You've been a football player here, don't you? I've been. I mean, being 20 minutes from home is pretty nice. And my dad, playing here, uh, is a big one too. So just being able to go back home and spend time with family is good. And it's a very good thing. How often do you go back? I would say, uh, probably once a week, at least once a week, somewhere right around there. Not that far. There's some different things. Yeah, get a family gathering. Yeah. Do you ever go back for a high school event?
Or go back to the game? Yeah. I can go back for a high school event. When things ramp up from school, 100 dollars fast, you know, a couple of times. I, yeah, it does. Uh, especially when the skin starts to manifest. You really have to go to the nursing school and you have to be really down on the intensive care. Now that we're under so much time, what, what excites you about getting on the field in the end? You play meaningful football. You know, the brothers, seeing the brothers succeed. You just know that all the work that we put in and do that will go to them too. That's awesome. Are you a big guy that had on my taking in the environment or you could fall business once you step out of the honest field? I, I'd probably say it's in a whole business. Like, I kind of just kind of went out and I go out there and it was really fun. But there's, there's moments like when we had a big or a game on a big metal, that was, that was awesome.
There's moments like that, we just kind of have to look at it and write it in the background. There you go. I'm happy to answer. When you were when you had an accident, like, I'm getting on a few snaps, what, how can you prepare for that for everything for you? Is there a way that you can get fresh in that moment? Practice, you know, practice here is practice a hundred percent here. So that's when you take a game and you do that. And then if it's going to be clean, you know, and you work on it, and at the game it means just what they're about practices or choices. What you're thinking about is that you're talking about the DDS you think you know what's the type of working-gen defense practice. How do they push you as to have a better experience? Hello, Dr. Lemme. Hello, Dr. Lemme. How much do you think? So I'd like to get my hands on them a little bit. If I can, I'm just going to break off with that. Well, that, you know, their quickness kind of helps me get my season.
I'm a cat with a host of 8K health damage by coming back and doing a lot of things in the product. I was like, as I'm getting up, I'm hoping you can get as well. I'm taking the guy that seems to be doing well and just thing on, I'm standing fighting for that new goal. What did they might see that comes from? I mean, you've seen a lot of those guys grow up for the new goal. I mean, I came up with a different thing to do. And so we're on the green side. It's just on the top, that's not how that's going to work. We're all trying to bring that along. We don't have that as to what's going to happen. So I'm going to be sharing that. When I'm using that, how many guys have had a new impact before? How many people have had a new one? I don't know. I'm not going to be happy to be a first-filled individual. People don't know what we're having. I mean, I think it's good. I don't know if you can do that. You can do that. You can see that there's a lot of scenes in there. But we're going to have to cut that out. It's a little, maybe it's going to close. We're going to have to do that. How important is the relationship of the new goal? The only thing that's wide means that we're going to be successful.
Good. We're close with the top goal. How do we have to keep moving on and off the stage? I think that's great. Absolutely, but I would say during mid-Spring, I'd just frame. I said, okay, I'm going to be better at this. I've had a really good summer, really good fall camp. I grew a lot of turns here. What's your like down reaction? Yeah, I mean, again, I've been a year ago. I'm way past it. I'm ready for this. What do you feel like your goal can be? Whatever they need me to do. I'm a self-reliant player. I can divide a lot. I can divide a lot. I can divide a lot. It's been great. You've played for some time, technically, with all the guys. I like to realize that you guys have been working so hard. Yeah. How are you going to follow up on the ball? Yeah.
Again, we bounce off the stage. Sometimes when I watch a film, I don't know. That's me or him. It takes me a second. He's very different. The ball is locked. It's a game that's experienced. I can't really feel on the body. It's like that. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I like that said there's a best in the country. There's a position. And then going into the summer, we're going to take me, my handplaced, my feet for a year. I think, not to be able to play, I developed a rear of the rear. Yeah. It did, at the same time, we were different skin. We were jacked down 26 pound points, just counter-meplaced. The year is more than a year. We do do jack runs.
I think the high continues to figure out what to do. Do you feel like there's just an opportunity for all of you in the tight end, or with Cade now? Yeah. We're at this Cade for sure, but we're communicating, and we're making sure that better. What's your vibe on? Straight towards the brand itself. What's the whole thing when you're springing in? What's the clock? What is the number of people wanting to talk to you? It just shows how what we have going on in the highest days. We're fortunate enough to have a program. I mean, they gave our national program. I think it shows the power of the program. This week in tow coatings that maybe that started last week before high-level of your thoughts on how you guys move back? Who are you here? This week in tow? I think going back to this foundation, I was a bit add-to-team. We believe that we're built on toughness. It's one thing to say, but I believe that we show up weekend. We got one show toughness. But to your point last week, I believe there was position groups that were challenged,
not necessarily taking a personal, but just challenged to practice harder. Let's see how hard can we practice? And so I think ever since then, there has been another step that we've taken. But that's the whole goal. I mean, I hope in two or three weeks from now, there's even another step that we take forward for where we are now. That's just the evolution of getting better at the team. And I think one thing I've noticed with this football team is I think every single week we play, we've continued to get better. But I mean, that's just life, right? I mean, the thing you continue to do, you have the hopes to continue to get better at it. But I think we're seeing that here with this football team as well. Gia, I think when we talked to you in camp, you said you were excited about how you guys are going to run the ball this year. And obviously, you've done that. At what point did it become clear to you that you guys are going to be able to kind of hang your hat in front of the ball the way you are now? I just think we're such a balanced offense. I think this kind of going against our team, especially in specifically against our offense, I think there's just too many things you have to remember. You've got to respect the perimeter and you have to respect the run game. You have to respect the stretch and the inside zone, all the different things that we can do,
putting the ball over the field in perimeter or even taking a shot down the field. You have to respect some of the things that just leaves gaps in the ability to gash the ball for six and seven and eight yards. So I guess to answer your question, the more dynamic wherever to be on the perimeter, the more we're able to connect when we hit on shots, I think the better it's going to be able to open up the run game as well. But I think Coach Kelly and Coach Dada do an amazing job just putting us in the right position and we don't have to think about that kind of stuff. We just awful minds that is 4 to 6, 8 to B plus 2 to play as hard and as violent as we can. And we'll look at the scoreboard at the end of the game and see where we are. Is that balance the best you've had to be here? You're going to characterize the ball in your mouth. I just think, I don't know, I don't want to sum up, I don't want to compare. But I think we're just a very balanced team. I don't, it's not much weakness. Now, when I say that, we still have the humility to know that we must continue to be better weekend and we gout.
But when I just look at our team as a whole, I don't just see like, let's go pick on this guy because this guy can't do X, Y, Z or we can leave him. We have 11 guys on both side of the ball that are able to be dynamic and the physical and strong players. And I think we're just a complete team. But again, I say that with humility. We want to continue to weekend and week out be the best team. We know we have to show up because on any given week you can lose. So we show up every week with the intentions of the National Championship. Let's say, a lot of us have a few days of our lessons. You're going to have this team for the Iowa game with a number of men. What's kind of help you grow as a leader and what's kind of help you grow more comfortable, I guess, as being kind of a voice in my voice. I would just attribute that to my faith. My words, they would do the scribes. I think before you can lead anybody else, you have to have a sense of foundation who you are. Having an offensive self and I think the more that I've been able to be strong in my faith, the more confidence it is given me into being leaders to other people, being able to be a leader to other people.
But I think that's where it starts. How can you lead people if you're not really sure of where you are? And then also when it comes to practice, practicality of football, I think the more you have an understanding of the often, the more vexing you are in the often, the more that you know, the more ability you can then hand-knowledge to the next group of younger guys coming behind you. So that all helps with leadership. But I would attribute that to my faith, my strong foundation, and no one who I am. And some of the better instrumentalized years that you kind of were able to learn from as well. And notice that they were pretty good leaders as well. You asked who were some? Others, there were so many. This being my fifth year, I've seen many, many leaders all the way going back to my freshman who were just in and past school and Jonathan Cooper, those guys to then the next group of guys with Chris and all those different guys going up coming through here. I've seen many great leaders and I think there's something I would definitely say there's something special with the leaders on this team.
I would say there's not the leaders that we have on this team, but not just leaders due to seniority, due to it's just my turn. But I would look at the leaders that we have on this team and say they're sincerely leaders, not just by leaders by hand, it's not as a hand-me-down. They're truly, we have great leaders on this team. The first question, Brandon was saying that he feels like Will is just built for the moment. Do you kind of feel that way too? Yeah, I feel like he never gets too high, he never gets too low. He's always locked in and focused. And that's the kind of, I don't know, temperament is the right word, but the right attitude, if you will, for lack of better words. That's the right attitude that you want from the quarterback. No matter what spot we are in the game, we look to Will and who will be able to lead our huddle. And we have confidence in that. All right, she, thank you. Really, man, these tough practices, you know, hard camp and so far and tough practices. So really just coming in each and every day, man, it's just trying to get better.
How important is Navajo and the Ron especially now in big time? Man, it's very important. The coaches, you know, they stress that a lot. You know, we've got to run the ball and stop the run, especially in these match-up games, you know, these big same games. So, you know, we've definitely been working, you know, to try to do that. What's the most intense memory you had the most lost one out here? I angle a lot. It's so many. It's so many. Paul Camp, no, Paul Camp, man, I got so many there. Paul Camp. But yeah, it's a lot, man. Okay, what was the first impression when you went shot and all you guys first met? I think when he first got here, he came in the room. And man, he gave us his speech. He was like, man, I'm a dog. And man, that's right, I knew I was like, I, we in it, man. We in it. But, no, I mean, I love CoachLog, man. It's out of the deep, brings him in. And man, I thank God for bringing him here, man. He's a man.
He's been amazing, you know, in this room on the same man. He's been a huge part of the same. So, I was talking to you about that. Have you ever had a coach quite intense as with Carlos' experience? Oh, yeah, man. Coach, Coach Afro was that way. You know, he coached me that way. And, you know, CoachLog does it as well. And so, yeah, man, both of those guys, man, I'm so thankful. You know, that God has allowed us to cross paths. You know, they both been really helpful in my life. Maybe on whether, other sets of different ones, the other day, or we just kind of generally keep them balanced sometimes. I was born as a for running back to work on stuff with a kind of off hand, and you're not carrying it over. I mean, I feel like it's just a tool. You know, you can use, you know, sometimes that comes out. And so, one thing that CoachLog helped us work on is using different tools. And so, it definitely comes to show on Saturday. You know, sometimes, so, man, that's, yeah, it's really important. Just trying to work on those tools as a running back.
What about contact now? And so, I'll be able to prove that over the course of your career. It seems like that's going to be great for you really. Yeah. Shoot, really, man, just like the part of this program is getting developed. And so, really, just getting developed here, you know, on the coaches here, they've been doing a good job of helping me, you know, grow and become, you know, a better running back. And so, especially having CoachLog here, you know, he's been a huge part of, you know, the success. I praise God, you know, first of all, most, but, you know, with him bringing CoachLog here, and him leading CoachLog here, man, he's been a huge part of that. So, with Coach Shawn, you know, we talk so much, you guys have talked about it. You know, split carries. But now that you're actually in the season, you deal during for a drive and then Coach Shawn comes in, you go over that nerve drive where you feel that defenses are more worn down where you're not in first time going the way. You split back goes before, but you've always been with the future back. Now you're kind of split carries. Do you feel like, do you feel the defenses are a little more worn down than you are when you get in there, you know, it's first, light first quarter or early second quarter?
Every now and, I mean, it really depends on the team. You know, there are some teams that play hard, you know, full four quarters. And so, yeah, it really depends on the team, to be honest. Do you think split carries what kind of helps you at all in the season? Yes, it has helped me in so many ways. And you know, it's a long season for real. And so, the biggest thing is just helping, you know, with the wear and tear. And I'm just building off each other moment of two. So, it's helped in so many ways. And you kind of love me more in here. There's even help in getting down up like, you know, you're not maybe getting the volume, you're just like, it's not harder or something. That doesn't have it helps at all. Coach, they actually talked about that too, be honest. Does he express to the team, you know, if you get tired, you know, we got, we got, we got death on the same, you know, guys who can come in and make plays. And so, he actually expressed that. Bigger chances are come, but what's impressed you about the offense and why? Man, really the work they've been playing in, you know, during practice. I mean, I know y'all see it, you know, during, on Saturdays, but man, really, the work that they've been in during practice, you know,
it's hard, man, and those guys do a good job of, you know, just coming in each and every day and trying to get better. You talk about your thinking, getting off from Sean. And he comes out with a step arm. You guys, you guys beat off that mentality up one of another, one of another. Yeah, man, like I said, man, there's definitely, we build momentum, you know, off each other and I'll definitely build momentum off when Sean, that when Sean is a great running back, I believe the shoot of best running back in the country, man, that boy talented man. And, you know, I'm so thankful, man, to have him here, man, he's going to be a huge part of the scene. Thanks for having me. Thanks for joining us together. And we got on the field and executed. I thought it was just amazing to see. So as it's teammate, you know, I gave him the arms and the props. And we got to the end of my bro, that's the hell of a lot, but, he's just good to see him. Did you hear him yell from the side, man? No. Because I was so loud, he could hear it on a TV microphone. No, actually, I did, man, I just seen the blitz pick up play with you while I was in the middle of it. You make you want to go out there and hit one? For sure. Yeah, for sure.
How was your fast pro-ohm Saturday? I don't. Definitely, you know, I didn't get a lot of blitzes as far as I think on the hat. Like, yeah, I didn't have any pressure on Saturday. So definitely want to want to share. You know, Coach Kelly, yesterday, is he, is he, does he call things differently when you're in the game? When he sees you're in the game or in when he sees Pravee on the game? He says no. He felt like that too, because the packages, the packages, you all just run the planes. Yeah, I think that's the biggest thing, you know, like I don't totally play it. I don't throw anything else because I just go out there and just execute it in your mind. Yeah, I know y'all are trained the same, but you know, you look at the guy you see. Basically, he's a little bit different from the red guy I mentioned. Yeah. Whoop. How do you like this package? I like this package. This office. You know, it's only the first game. So I wish I could say, definitely how much I like it so far. But I think as we continue throughout the season, we get to showcase a lot of different, more other things. How does it compare to like what's your game? The whole mess and stuff, the variety of plays, etc. I think just starting off the season at the point that we're now like, we haven't really done too many crazy games just right away.
It's your practice. Yeah, you already did. Yeah, does it feel pretty deep to you? Oh, yeah, definitely. It's going to be fun. It's time to share. Which one is it feel like you guys are close in the run game, the bus and you do okay? Yeah, I definitely think so. Like I said, we see on the fan, you know, how everybody has collected, we can come together and improve things that we're missed or stuff like that, but I think we definitely. Well, I think. I'm sure I got that big. What's that Brandon in it? I know what was your point of view of that and we're watching back on film. What's that reaction to you and how much of an emphasis is that? It was like your man. Yeah. Definitely, definitely a big emphasis, especially at our position. Super important just to see what we do in practice together in the Eagle XB. What was the reaction to seeing that block? I mean, at the moment, I just like, Danny and Mike. Sure. Coach Kelly was talking about you, Jamie on James people.
It doesn't matter who's in the game. They call it the same way. And James, like, what did you see in his first performance? Do you see some similarities that all between you guys? I think in James, man, just saying, I'm going to be super excited with the performance, like go out there for his first game and see him get the run and get the dude out. Just see him get the experience like his first game. Me and Tray both just enjoy it. Are you surprised at all the sea teramising happen for ever game? I think just as a team and like we're so talented and everybody just works so hard since we've been here. I think we just get to see what each of our teammates can do. So it's like when they go out on Saturdays, it's no surprise. Great. Which one? Thank you very much. Thank you guys. Thanks for the challenge. It takes a step on just walking towards the locker if you don't mind. Really just coming in each and every day, man, it's just trying to get better.
So, how important is establishing the run, especially now in big time? Man is very important. The coaches, they stress out a lot. We've got to run the balls, not to run, especially in these match-up games, these big game games. So we've definitely been working to try to do that. What's the most intense memory you had the most lost in the last game? I ain't going to lie. It's so many. It's so many. Paul County, no, Paul County, man. I got so many there, Paul County. It's a lot, man. Okay, what was the first impression playing with you and you clinched out all you guys first met? I think when he first got here, he came in the room. He gave us the speech. He was like, I'm a dog. I'm a dog. That's right, I knew I was like, we in it, man. I love Coach Lugman, it's all the deep friends here. Thank God for bringing him here, man.
He's been amazing. In this room, on the same man, he's been a huge part of the same. I was talking to you about that. Have you ever had a coach quite intense as with Carlos'? Oh, yeah, man. Coach Ophor was that way. He coached me that way. Coach Lug does it as well. And so, yeah, man, both of those guys, man, I'm so thankful. That God has allowed us to cross paths. They both been really helpful in my life. Maybe on whether or not that's different from what the cell of the other day were, we just had a generally keeping balance sometimes. I was born as a for running back to work on stuff with the kind of off hand and you're not carrying this over. I mean, I feel like it's just a tool. You know, you can use sometimes that comes out. And so, one thing that Coach Lug helped us work on is just using different tools. And so, it definitely comes to show on Saturday. You know, sometimes. So, man, that's, yeah, it's really important to just try to work on those tools as a running back.
What about contact now? I'll do the proof that over the post-procure thing. It seems like that's going to strengthen you really, really. Yeah. Um, shoot, really, man. Just like the part of this program is getting developed. And so, really just getting developed here. You know, the coaches here, they've been doing a good job of helping me, you know, grow and become, you know, a better running back. And so, especially having Coach Lug here, you know, he's been a huge part of, you know, the success. I'm praise God, you know, first and foremost, but, you know, with him bringing Coach Lug here, him leading Coach Lug here. Man, he's been a huge part of that. So, with Coach Lug, you know, we talk so much, you guys have talked about it. You know, split carries, but now that you're actually in the season, you feel you're in for a drive and then Coach Lug comes in. You go over that third drive where you feel that defenses are more worn down where you're not in first time going with your foot back, it feels before. You've always been in the future back. Now you're kind of split carries. Do you feel like, you feel the defenses are a little more worn down than you are when you get in there, you know, first, light first quarter or early second quarter.
Every now and I mean, it really depends on the team. You know, there are some teams that play hard, you know, four quarters. And so, yeah, it really depends on the team to be honest. You think split carries, what kind of helps you at all anyway? Yes, it has helped me in so many ways. And I, you know, it's a long season for real. And so, the biggest thing is just helping, you know, with the wear and tear. And I'm just building off each other moment of two. So, it's helped in so many ways. And you can kind of live an even more in here to even help you when you get down up like you could go, you know, you're not maybe getting the volume, you could just like some run harder or something. I don't have any help at all. Coach, they actually talked about that to be honest. Does he express to the team, you know, if you get tired, you know, we got, we got, we got death on the same, you know, guys who can come in and make plays. So, he actually expressed that. Bigger tests are common, but what's impressed you about the offense and why in the month of the month? Man, really the work they've been playing in, you know, their practice. I mean, I know y'all see it, you know, during on Saturdays, but man, really the work that they've been in their practice, you know, it's hard, man.
And those guys do a good job of, you know, just coming in each and every day and trying to get better. So, you talk a lot about your thinking, getting off from Sean. And he comes out with a step arm. You come out with a step arm. You guys, you got speed off that mentality. I want to, one of another, one of another. Yeah, man, like I said, man, there's definitely, we build momentum, you know, off each other and not definitely build momentum off my Sean, man. When Sean is a great running back, I believe the best running back in the country, man. That boy, talented man. And, you know, I'm so thankful, man, to have him here, man. He's going to be a huge part of the scene. Thanks, right? Yeah, man. He's been working really hard, man. Even before the season, he had a great spring, great summer, especially throughout ball count. He took a lot of reps and went against Shooter, the top players, top defense in the country. So, I think he's ready to make a fair. As a bad team game, if you recognize what he's just happening with, they bring off the man as he goes over, then coming in, and then you're against two players, those three.
I'm not going to lie. Sometimes I'm too locked in, I don't really notice it. But it went to Jimmy's, he went down, and it was good to get that as in K-Man. And so, this is trying to motivate him. You know, he can do it, man. And then it's a great battle. We have the team to trust him. I'm not going to walk over there. Praveen, on whatever things you can do, add the veteran, add the back, then to help those guys out front. I think the biggest thing, you know, is just, you know, continuing to encourage each other. And those tough times, you know, when it gets hard, I think that's the biggest thing. I think there's a lot of time with time to be hard, you know, you can get selfish, I think, I talk to him. And so, that's something that God has been helping me work on. It's just, and those tough times, you know, to not be selfish, you know, at all, and really encourage the guys, you know, around me, and spread his life. Is that when you've seen throughout the team here, it was actually going to happen? Yes, definitely seeing that, man. We've definitely been listening each other up, and encouraging each other. You know, just, they're really trying to put the pace and focus on the basketball.
We'll talk yesterday about how this lost, positive, and connected, right away. You haven't had a lot of chances. Is that just how it was? How do you feel like you guys are turning the page of the public? I think really that was, that was like the biggest focus when we came in after that loss. I met a team, it's just like Coach Day, really did a good job of that, you know, just like, man, we all kind of own up to the mistakes that were made. But, you know, one thing I love and respect about Coach Day is that he took it upon himself. You know, he called himself out, and it was like that, so I know. But it's, and really it's not all of us, you know, entertainment. So that's one thing I really love about Coach Day is that, you know, he was willing to check himself. What was last week's practice, like, specifically coming off that game? It was, it was, it was tough now. It was, it was a great week of development, you know, getting better and cleaning up the little details of the games. And I think, you know, we, that we continue to strive on the little things, the little details, you know, we can really go forward.
What's different about coming off the loss early out of this season, you're becoming up that first loss later in the year? I think the biggest thing is it just, it humbles us, you know, it keeps us focused on the right thing. Like, I believe this is a test of our faith, you know, in the Lord. I think this, I believe, you know, he wanted it to go this way, you know, and test our faith, you know, where we continue to trust him, even when things don't go our way. And, you know, he's helping us pass that test. You said Coach Day called himself out. What did he call himself out on? What kind of things do you say? Really just as a head coach, you know, this is his team, you know, he's like the guy. And so he was just like, it really starts with me. And so we love that, you know, I think a lot of times, you know, coaches will pinpoint it on everyone else, but Coach Day, you know, man, he just took upon himself and like, that's only, you know, he's going to get it big. And, you know, he's definitely been pushing us, man, and pointing us in the right direction, man, and helping us clean up things. Try to punch on a few ladies football, and we'll have any fun with this career.
What do you see from him kind of found the back of that? This week, this week, we've got to see him, but it procedure down as well. Where is he at in terms of, you know, responding? Quashon, man, he's been responding to that virtually really well. Yeah, he's definitely not used to putting the ball on the ground. And so he's definitely been working hard in practice to get that, to get that fixed man, Quashon, there's a really great player, and he's definitely going to bounce that. It's even kind of guy you have to go over to right after that happens. And give him some motivation and comfort. You kind of leave for that hand. Yeah, I mean, we always go to the bench and we encourage each other, man, Quashon. You know, he encourages me, I encourage us, and so, man, it's like, you know, we're just sharpening each other, man, and dare for each other. You know, when you meet him. Sure, you're on the 2014 title team getting on inside of you. Isn't there 10 day anniversary? Do you remember watching Zekin and those guys as a kid, and how did they put your memories of them? I'm not going to lie. I did not watch it at the kids. I'm not going to lie. Have you gotten to know them now, or just what's your sort of like, you were that team?
Yeah, that team was loaded. That's what I heard about the team. Like it was really loaded. I see highlights every now and then, I think, leaping off the like the champions, whether you can spam them, right? Yeah, yeah, like four, right? Four tuts for the four. Yeah, I think so, but I know that team was stagnant. I was loaded. So a lot of great guys on the team. Thank you for having me. Appreciate it, John. I think that's why you know, just coming in, you know, with the right mindset, trying to put it in the work you should every day and get better as a team. So what are some ways that you and Genes are on kind of contrast, the problem with one of the things that you may not be able to do as well as they are, as a vice versa. Shoot, I don't know. We'll see. Where is Genes step number four support places that have the teams like he's really a coach. Man, James has been so good.
Man, he's a really good person and good player. And he comes in every day, you know, just trying to get better. You know, he kind of reminds me a lot about myself and somewhere. And this is how they're in everything just coming in. He's going to be a great player to him and he's continuing to buy it. You know, it's a little bit over here and you know, where we're trying to go. And you know, he's going to be a huge part of this offense. You said big person too. What's the doubt about this game? Man, he just made someone do it. Man, he's a funny dude. And man, yeah, I just love him as a brother. Man, I got a new chance. You know, I knew James when he was recruited. And so we talked a little bit. And just like being here, man, just being there, you know, help him and serve him. And the local community is being done and conversation that we have, you know, just off the field. And so just being able to do that for him, you know, when he's with you. You know, just taking for that. They tried to throw with real dollars every situation set of bills on him. How does the impact affect the one of them running again?
Yeah. How does it, how does it, how does it, how does it, how does it, how does it, how does it, how does it, how does it affect the one of them? Oh man, Caleb Downs, he's a good player, man. I was so glad. You know, he's here, man. He's, he's been really good for the defense, man. And yeah, man, he's, he's all around the field, you know, making plays in the ranked game, past game, everywhere. And he shows them everywhere. What is it we always feel responsible for? As a captain, Jesus teaches greatness and serving. And so I just, you know, I think for me, you know, I just want to be, you know, the Lord's humble servant and just be able to serve others. You know, the players on my team, you know, how I reckon do so and be the captain that the Lord wants me to be. And so, you know, it's a big responsibility, you know, the biggest thing is just like that I pray on it. And that the Lord helps me to remember is that, you know, I'm trying to please him and not others. And so, you know, just keep it in my eyes on the Lord and continue to allow him to work on my heart to be a better team-mate captain for my team.
I think that's, it's, it's going to be really good. And that's how you're going to go for your own, my God, your team. Uh, she's not really, man, it's just, yeah, not really, man. I'm just so thankful, you know, that God has placed me in this position and that my team makes, you know, they pick me to be in this position. And yeah, I'm just so thankful, man, and just being in this position, like I just want to be able to bring Lord to the Lord's name. And so, like I said, man, just leaning on him, you know, it's tough, man. It's tough being a captain because every day, you know, you got to come in and people are looking at you, do things right. And so, there's been days where I struggled and just got in the secret place with the Lord and just asking the Lord to for help, you know. And he bought me due, man. And he's continuing to make me a better person, a better team-mate. What do you want to point to on you to step in this first sunset, Saturday, and one of the city on the game, that you do? I don't even think we talk much about that yet.
Yeah, I don't know how much we talk about that. We still locked in there right now, man. It's just, when that time comes, we come. But, yeah, what would you tell them about the atmosphere of what is going on on Saturday, if you could do some tasks? It's a side of, man. It's a side of, especially first game, being back in the shoe, the walk, and seeing a fans and everything. You know, it's a huge environment. So, yeah, I'm, man, I know he's going to be so excited. You guys are bringing over two in the country. You're loaded. People expect y'all to make a run all the way to the championship game. Who knows what happens in. How legit is that from your game this point? From your city. From where you're sitting. I'm trading on about this team. Yeah. Shoot, man. You know, it's a long season. And so, I think the biggest thing is that we're trying to do as a team. You know, this year, it's not lived too far ahead. It's just taking one game at a time. You know, I think that's the biggest thing right there, man. It's like, let's just focus on hacking and marsh within the next game, the next game. And then eventually, like, we'll get there, man. We'll get there.
But just every day, just trying to focus on one day at a time, putting in the word. And I'm preparing for the opponent. You know, we have each week. All right. Right. Thank you. Thanks for having me. Appreciate y'all. Appreciate it, man. I'm so, you know, it's been great. And the more that I just throw to these receivers and just get, you know, get around these guys, you know, the more we're coming together. And becoming a team. And it's, it's cool to see you. And we just got to keep, keep doing it and keep practicing as hard as we as men. So I practice within what it would be like, but not like, you know, fun. You know, I think I've, I think I've done a pretty good job protecting the football and, and being smart with my decisions. You know, I think that I want to continue to push the ball down the field when I, when I have opportunities to and be accurate down the field and, and get, get some more arrow my, on my deep balls. Those are just a couple things that I've, I've thought about personally, but, you know, I think, I think one of the bigger things is, you know, what are we doing as a team? And, you know, obviously, you know, I'm thinking about myself and how I can be better.
But, you know, the bigger thing is how can we be better as a team? How can I facilitate that being a quarterback? You know, how can I encourage somebody, you know, before we go out there to remind them, hey, you know, if it's a running back, you know, make sure on six, you know, whatever protection, you know, you've got these guys. You know, doing, doing things like that is, is something I want to continue to grow in for my team, you know, because that's, at the end of the day, you know, all 11 guys have to do their job, every single play and, you know, being the quarterback, you kind of have to facilitate that a little bit, and help those guys and make sure that, you know, we're, we're being the best team we can be. Yeah, I'm just having what's talking about. So, you take off your leg on them and practice, you know, the fast, the fast. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I felt fast. It was nice to get out and running a little bit. You know, I, I, we made a little, made a little QB call on that play and got out and ran. And, um, it was fun, you know, obviously it's, it's nice to compete with those guys and running, you know, trying to outrun some, some BBs that are really, really fast.
