I always did that, I'll keep you compensating to it. This next season, kind of trying to push for a job. Is that like a confidence booster for you? I mean, I'll say it was a confidence booster. One reason I say that, because you get like good coaches who believe in you and like they give you the tools to go out there and just play with confidence. You know, not their diving skills. Like you got your teammates who got your back. Like my first play when I got a third Tennessee, like when DeZoe, IGB and Jermaine. The first thing they say is like no worry, just go out there and play with confidence. You know, you know the tools, it's usual tools. It's just go out there and make a play. And where about a play coming to you? Where is your time and show job? I mean just do it. And then like, the same goes for you. Like he gives me, he puts me in a position like at the drills we put in, the work you put in, the one on one, so I just go out there and just perform at the highest level. How much better are you right now than maybe last month at Fortesburg right? I mean, I got way better just because I've transitioned a little bit to the inside. Nick was far south. Like now I see just like catch, catch, take me, get this. And often, Pepper's not always press at the line.
So it's like not able to like move my feet, move my hands, like see like what I got to do just like just in case I got to go back in corner. I can, I plan off now. I'm very confident out there. Do you think that Nick was a natural fifth of you or have you had to kind of convince yourself to transition to that? I mean, I feel like his natural feel for me because I feel like me individually I'm a fast learner. Like coaches help us like learn fast and like, because they're always honest about the techniques and stuff. So you like, you write down like you pick up all the things and then like when we get out here, they coach us to like the techniques always, you just go out there and play like fast spot. And then you know, I would like, you're absolutely able to just go out there and just compete. Is that where you kind of stuff this spring or do you get kind of mounted? So I've really been stuck there this spring a little bit, but like whenever you get it's like other things, I just bounce out there every once in a while just like have fun. See if I still got it every once in a while. So it's as good as going through to compete at most spots. You mentioned the technique, what technique, you know, tips and things that you had to pick up and learn from,
because walking from the beginning to the end. I mean, this is always like, you're like, because what, coaches ask me hands, like see it, you see it, move your feet and then get your hands with your hands on the mat. So it's like, when you feel like, are you out there, you able to like process like the way the receiver comes off the ball, looking at the hips and seeing like the way he moving. Are you able to pick up like the row concerts you can get out of that. Like so it's being like under coach walls, like as a player and just like him breaking out football to you like one on one. It's like very beneficial. What was the hardest part of making that transition from outside inside? I really say like the corner you got to cover to, you cover three, you cover one, it's easy, but then when you got nickel, there are so many responsibilities you got to see like the row concepts, you got to be able to process like diagnosed, roused faster then what you got to do in that corner and just be able to like everything's quid, like your transition, you got to like, you got to move fast, you got to just learn to move fast. It's like game recognition, where you think maybe you've run the ball since you got it.
How did you guys run? I would definitely say, I would definitely say, because how you get to like college, it's a little bit different, like high school, you got to worry about things like that, when you get to college in a school like this, like your recognition of plays, and like your loyal jobs, the way like the coverage is supposed to be played, and I understand all your teammates are supposed to be having a feel, it's like it gets easy. What have your product been? It's so far. It's very talented. It's a great dude, it's a humble guy, a great teammate, very supportive, because I've got that you don't want to run because you can feed off your energy because you can see like when you make a play, he's like, he like IGV, it's like IGV 2.0, so he's like, when you get out there with guys like that with good energy, it makes you play a little bit harder, and then like when you make a play, it's out there, it's helping you, it's being out there with him, he's a good player. One of those guys, of course, is 10 full kids, I would say obviously over the last couple of years, or so, there's probably three of them now. What is it about one build that gets you through? I stay back, you know, whether it's physicality,
they what are the first things that come to mind when you think of, you know, how you're sharing that? Speed of power, you saw it and tried it out. Yeah, is that something that, I mean, you feel like you have to, you know, work on it or is that something that you're like, yeah, that's the kind of back I am, I'm just going to be next to mine, I think that's how back I am, but you go, yeah, what are kind of a few of those things that you're like, yeah, I need to work on it, like go to the courses, the next few months, I'll just have to make sure I keep all the details, boss career, yeah. What a coach like tell you that you like to actually game, is it part of the sort of tackles, you speed, what is it like? He said you like, I thought about field game, but I think he like that, I'm not a coach. What's kind of your main, I mean, obviously as an in-state kid, committed to this class, what's your pitch now to other recruits, be like, this is why you should join Ohio State's 20th major. It's a real family atmosphere. Yeah, everybody gets along, everybody talks to everybody, do it, do it, do it. What'd you say? What'd you get any coach you like to hear? It's a walk-go. It's a training back, or a coaching,
an affection back, or a training back, please bring it to the club. I've always looked up to a low-action watching this film, probably, do you, that's funny. Do you think that your playstyle can mirror his for this perspective just the way that he really is close to the wall? No, I think that you are. I think I can't. I think speed and the card, yeah, I think I can. You know what I mean? We're the main guys that you're talking to right now and you're trying to smile. I'm really talking to everybody, the listener, and that auto-commissioner. Any guys that you want to join the class or anybody at the top here? No, not at the table. I'm sorry if you already got asked this, but coming out here as a recruit, as a commitment, I'm saying, what did you want to show today? What did you want to get out of this experience? It wasn't up in the show. Nothing, I just wanted to get this one working. It was a lot of fun. How did you feel like that went? Obviously, he's still relatively new here, but he seems to bring a little bit of a different energy than some of these camps in the past. I feel like it went good.
Yeah. Do you sense that energy? I mean, when you're out with him, I feel his intention. He's different than other guys though, right? I mean, kind of how would you explain his coaching than some of the other running back coach you've made up working with in the past? It does intense. It does. Go, go, go. Did you talk to Coach Lachlan when he was a garden? I did. Okay. So when didn't he get, did he work in getting market markets? Hey, roughly. Around like a half of season, like not so far just seeing. Okay, so I mean, is it was he kind of the same guy that he is now? So just in the new uniform basically? Yeah. Then you guys obviously added Isaiah to the class and there's no secret they would like to add another one. What are your thoughts on being in a class with three different running backs like that? I have no problem being with the class, I think. What do you like about Isaiah? I don't recognize him. I don't recognize him. You don't recognize him? You get there at the bottom? I don't. You just damn down the first time. Oh, okay. When you committed to doing some of the guys that we shot to, you were very committed to taking care of that.
Absolutely committed. Um, I'm not really a couple of law backers. Tape me out. I'm a fellow. It's nice to go. It's a desire that can be addicted for people. You know, I think I fell into that, no way younger age, but I'm super glad that that's not who I am. I'm just going to trip my power. Is it set again? I watched the last episode of Land Band on the plane. I downloaded it to the right show. What do you think of that? Little ha-ha, but I don't know that. This wife seems a little like all her life. I don't know how he handles it. It's a good show, bro. It seems to be coming on the come up. It's been a while right? I'm excited to see how that goes. Where did you get your job? Oh, I thought you did a good job. I was surprised. Honestly, it seemed like you knew what you were doing. It was cool.
It was cool. So any important question? You say you hit your mom in the salary. You guess, win it all. Does mommy get a pay raise or...? I don't know what to talk about that. This year's, I'll have a meeting or something. I'll figure it out. Everybody seems to have a meeting with a band trust. I keep it. Peace. I don't know how much I've put to it. I'm just going to help you. As other people, I just want to find my bathroom. Yeah, well, let me first off, I think I'd be doing this service to my teammates. You know, me even thinking about what's next. What's right in front of us isn't over yet. And that's another thing I got to tell me. So much grew is just being present in every single room that I'm in. You know, not looking too far ahead, because I'll trip on what's right in front of me. So, again, that's too so for sure.
I'm not thinking for me to even be thinking about what's next to me. Are you at least aware that there's a lot of speculation out there that people are going to throw a huge number and the few are going before the law. I mean, right now I'm just not worried about all that stuff. I mean, people can say all they want to say, but, you know, I'm just focused on, focus on Friday. What's the last thing you're going to say about this service? I mean, I still get nervous for sure, but I just don't think, I think I do have a good, just understanding that, at that moment, whatever moment it is that I'm nervous about, it doesn't define who I am as a person, and it doesn't define who I am and God's eyes. And understanding and knowing that has just kind of put this force field of peace around me that I think it allows me to be able to be calm in certain situations, but it doesn't let us look at nervous.
What makes you nervous? I mean, I just love the game so much, and if you don't get nervous or a little bit of a burden, I don't think you have that same love. I mean, I've got a burden for us since, you know, going into football games and so forth, you know, five, six years old, so I don't want that feeling in this game, you know, I just, you know, football just doesn't mean as much as it did to me back then, and I want to tell always, that much of this. I've been where you all stood here, to the game I've had. I've been told, but I think I'm going to let you all last day in the next game. This is going to be a hard stay. I'm going to plan as much, so I just wanted to get like more experience under my belt, so I can bring younger guys with me because I've been through a lot. One of those younger guys, we're seeing it out here, it's the first time I've heard all of you last year's wasn't it? What have you seen from Will? Because I kind of felt like last year, we all forgot about him because he was hurt.
Now he's running, you know, tied. What have you seen from the veterans? Well, as a workhorse, he's going to stay quiet, he's going to work hard, and that's what I love about him. He focuses, he don't really talk much. He's going to get the job done, do a job right, really has any mistakes. So what would be a successful season? A national championship? A ring, win, all the games we don't want to lose into thing. We got a mindset that we can't be beat, and we just got to go show it. Is that mindset different? It seems like you guys expect a national championship every year, and this year, even more so, you guys have all come back for this, you guys have all decided like that, not as a lot, because that is to keep feeling different, or is there not really any difference, it's just the same work. It's definitely a difference. Everyone working harder, we noticed our last run, and most of us don't have any years after this, so we got to go bigger, go home, and we're not trying to go home. Finish big. We know what you guys think of Michigan, but when you look at what they did,
they won the national championship, and you guys took them down to the final minute, right? You know what I mean? I mean, you were right there. Something goes a little different. You guys could have won that game against them. Does that tell you anything about like that, hey, you guys won a winner national championship, but you played to the 59th minute, with the team that won the national championship last year, like you're that close. So I'm saying, we just work harder. That's kind of a coach who makes a saying, you know, nobody cares, just work harder. Like those, you know, when we played Georgia, it's the same thing. Last play, you know, they went on the win in 90s, so we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season. I think we'll be fine. How frustrating is that? You're that close against the last two national titles? Of course it is, you know, it's frustrating, but you can't change the outcome. You can't really dwell on it. You just got to, you know, come back and work harder. Do things better than you did last year, and hopefully the outcome will change. Is that as you get older, you kind of learn. I thought I was working harder than you always find out
there's a little more that you could have been doing. Yeah, definitely. I mean, that's how, that's what growing up is basically in college. I thought, freshman year, I was working, it's hard as I could, but now I look back at it. I really wasn't working hard at all, compared to what I'm doing now. So just to learn anything. If the stamina is a 16, then the answer is like, what do you need it to be to be your best? Uh, it is a 75. 80, 85? I mean, I can, it's all on me. I just, I think it's a little higher. I was just trying to be funny, but, I mean, it's all on me. I just got to run harder. Get in shape. So that's the stamina. You young the heart. It's been a pleasure. The idea of a potential is 16 or 17 or 17. I mean, I've said about that idea. Does it make you nervous about, can you last that long? You're worried, you're worried, you're worried about that. I think, I think we, I definitely can last. You know, we got to get the young guys to come along with it. We can't play 50 snaps again. That's just too much on our bodies. Uh, just everybody. Like, online, D line.
We got to get those younger guys to play, you know, get that pieces on the D line and the online and everywhere else. So we can last that long. Speaking of that, if you like playing that new snap to me last year, because I don't know if any of us were really expected to be playing that next. Uh, yeah, I did. Unless we were like winning by like a lot. Uh, I thought like, there are no moments you know, I can go sit down or something, but we're playing them big games like, you know, Notre Dame, too, or North, those kind of games. Of course, I want to be because I know I can contribute. And I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I can get the job done. What stands out about Kevin McDonald? Is he got the game? I mean, you guys are the second. Oh, yeah, definitely. K-Mac is a K-Mac animal. Y'all, you haven't really seen it yet, but in practice, he shows all the time. He's just, he's just, he's growing right now. He has to work, I think. He just has to get, you know, in the playbook and things like that. You guys are about the exact same size. Listen, you're both listening to 6th or your 327, he's 326. Yeah, he's very open. I kind of look at him like my junior,
but you know, K-Mac, he's going to be a great player. He's just got to develop more and getting to playbook. So really a lot on you older guys. There's that large group of young guys and then there's the seniors in the back. Is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys along as well? Yeah, definitely. We got to be leaders. We got to have them play this year. We can't just play all the snaps. They got to get in there and get some work. And we got to get them right during the all season. So they can play. And not just play, they want to like contribute, like make plays, tackle, sex. It's a state that I work this freshman. Thank you. It seems like these guys get bigs. Each freshman class is a bigger up leader. Do those guys kind of, does it kind of while you're in the cell? Yeah, they're definitely some big dudes. And they all work hard. I'm really seeing much of something day two when I'm passing on. But throughout the workouts, they've been working hard. You know, they're determined. I can say that. And it looks like they're ready to work with me. How important this notes feels like. There's a lot of great defenses that you have big athletic defensive tactics
who can eat up space. But also move, you know, right? That is that. Is that an inquire that maybe for great defense to have guys like you that have some balls but also a great team. I think that is definitely I think if you look at the last couple of nice and championship winners are like team of North, you know, they got two good, detaco, two athletic detacles. Look at Georgia, two athletic detacles. So I think that's definitely need if you want to go on that big run and beat those big teams. If you think about that, they won't defied by the defense attack. It's like, what's Jordan, Jordan Davis and DL Carter and what's Michigan? Chris Jenkins. Couple more questions for you. You might as well ask how, I mean, you understand it because you play it. But I feel like some time I don't know. Are people realizing how important defense tackles are? A little bit more than they used to? I think so. I think there's darned to develop more and more of these like freakish detacles. Yeah. Like in the combine, just now you see in like those guys, they're moving four to four seven eights and things like that.
So we'll see. And when you think about those freakish attacks, how do you think you can do that? How do you think you fit into that mold of that kind of player? You watch that and say, yeah, that's me. Yeah, definitely. I think I'm top notch when it comes to detacles, but I don't want to, you know, get a big head, but you know, watch it come on. I watch it do the drills. I have tape to you like, look at my film. So I think I'm up there. You become like a artist who comes to the bad guy. I think the way it's kind of things. When you're going, you're not doing as much a weapon. How do you work on that? Do you have like a gold one? I don't remember how many ad lines you have going on. How many do you want to have? I mean as many as I can have, I think I have more than that, but I think they're counting. I think they're counting some of them and some of them were like just missed it. So, but I think we work on drills matching the hand. I think that's goes big and what we do is a D line, you know, just affecting the quarter of that is. Any way you can is just great for the defense, you know, just that little thing covering his eye, you know, he might throw it.
A little bit to the left to our player. So it's something that you really, really have to work on. It's one of the things that you've maybe worked on the most. You've got to continue your time here because there are a few guys that I've seen. Like, oh, that passed me two times a day. We don't have that. We're kind of kind of expected for the next one. I think I just have like a eye for the ball kind of. Just look at the quarterback and just I see him like load up. I just try to get in his ways and sometimes he's those who tell me. I'm here to do it to be a high state quarterback. I mean, they get frustrated, but you know, we're a team, you know, we're just getting better. I should lot of a lot of different backs, man. They just learn to grow for them. You got to pick your top three backs. You got to go right now. I don't really have a top three, but I'll give you one. I would say, say, Juan Gibbs and I like McCaffrey.
Although he was injured this year. I like McCaffrey. Best back in this draft. I lead out of the yard. That's y'all decision. Playing with Will Howard. What I'm going to remember most. Where Howard, man, he's just such a great leader. It's just like in moments where, you know, usually a lot of players they fold. Man, he was just always calm and relaxed. Man, he just the leader that he was, man, that's one thing I'm going to remember about him. Yeah, he's shoot. He's going to be really good, man. He's on Coach Lock. I think he got the transfer in as well from West Virginia. Just that one two punch with them both as well. I think he's going to be really good backs. And so James, people's man, he's smart. The way that he goes about his business, man, he's mature. And so man, he's growing, you know, just as a person and as a player. And so man, yeah, definitely Ohio State. You know, that running back room is in great hands.
Right. Like I'm looking at the UFC spot and put on this. How do you raise your personality and the approach of keeping that up? Yeah. Coach Hartlund, man. He's full of energy, man. And he's creative as well. You know, trying to run more outside the backfield was being able to learn from Coach Hartlund. And so he's definitely creative at what he does. And he brings a lot of energy to the team as well. And so I think they'll do really good. Straight away. Is that a way to play off cards? That's what we put more strength in to. Just intensity, man. And since he got the playoffs, every game, man, is like the intensity got, you know, higher and higher. And so, you know, being able, I know in the lead, it's the same thing. Even if it's not the playoffs, just every game and intensity keeps getting higher and higher. So, yeah, you just, I know you got to bring it, you know, each and every day and come in and work. Just like Ohio State. You know, I definitely feel like Ohio State. They definitely do a good job of preparing us for that. You know, I just remember even before going through this process, I'll talk to a lot of players before that.
And they told me a lot of just about how much Ohio State prepared them, you know, for the NFL. And so, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I know I took a couple of days off after the National Championship. And then, shoot, right after that, I'm writing sample Florida and I'm right to it. And so, yeah, I think where I trained, I trained at Yo-Murth Performance. I think it's called the House of Athlete or the Compound now. They did a good job, man. They're just bringing us in and the way they went about training us, man. They did a really good job. The Bucking Nears, no, I haven't. Temple, a Tampa nice. It's a nice city, man. Really nice. The 40 to broad and the vert. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, not, man. It's really all about technique and then it's about mindset as well.
And so, I say, you know, it's for the love of my brother. It's for the love of Will Howard. It's for the love of the receiver. It's who I got on the perimeter. Just making sure, you know, first of all, my quarterback doesn't get sacked. I'm going to take this one out of the box. I'm going to take this one out of the box. I'm going to take this one out of the box on the perimeter just making sure, you know, first of all, my quarterback doesn't get sacked. And I told Will I think it was before the first game. I was like, I got your brother. He said, man, I'm not going to let you get hit. You know, and so I don't know if I gave up a sack. I'm not sure that, but I know if I did, I haven't given up too many. And so, man, it's for the love of my brothers though, man, making sure the ball get in their hands. the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed. You had to hit the practice field later today. What is something you've been working on right now? In my game, you can't really work on this. In all season, I feel like it's more so. You got to put the pads on. You got to go through some inside run. It's really just continuing to run through tackles.
And so that's one of the areas in my game. I want to continue to get better. I feel like I did a good job of that in my senior year. And so I just want to continue to build on that. Yes, I did. Yes, I did. So people trained all the time to look like, I'll let him borrow out there. You get back in person. I can't really remember. I did meet with New Orleans as well. I never got that comparison. Actually, I know I have a Camera. Sure, yeah, man. I have a Camera. Great back, man. Just what he does and those 101 matchups, he's dangerous, man. And he's so smooth. He's so smooth as well. I'm not going to lie. He's smooth. So it's your favorite matchup play in the Dome here. What's your favorite game? What's your favorite game? Yeah. Inside zone from stack, being able to hit that thing downhill. And I'll say the next one is probably just an option route out of the backfield. You know, a man and man coverage. You're getting on that linebacker. And so. Great. What do you want? What do you want?
What do you want? What do you want? What do you want? What do you want? What do you want? What do you want? What do you want? What do you want? What do you want? What do you want? Yeah. I say the man. The biggest thing is the way that he carries himself, man. And the way that, man. He approaches the game. He comes in with the mindset. You know, he's going to work every single week. You know, every practice, you know, he's working hard. You know, even shoot him. I don't know. Every game. I think he had a, every game was a good game for him, man. And so. But still, man, he always has him and Tyler did a mindset that. You know, he's going to come in each and every day. He's going to work and get better, man. And so he's definitely, man. He's going to be a special player, man. He really is. I think how do you look like Tyler? You know, you're a girl actually in the air. I think we're a lot started in. You know, we've been going through some entries. I think it's a massive difference. We're going to look back on it. What do you want to stand out for? Man, a lot of ups and downs, man. It's just how you respond to adversity. And I feel like that's something that God has definitely helped me to do better. It's just, I'm not going to have something to lean on now. You know, I remember before I met him, you know, going through those. I've heard that. I've heard that. I've heard that. God has definitely helped me to do better. It's just, I'm not going to have something to lean on now. You know, I remember before I met him, you know, going through those.
I've heard that. I had nothing to run to. You know, you can run to people, but they still can't. It's not too much. They can't truly help you. You know, I feel like, you know, I feel like the only person that can truly help you is your relationship with Jesus Christ. And so being able to lean on him, you know, he gives you, in those moments where it's tough, you know, where it's slow. And when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about, he gives you that peace and comfort. You know, even in those moments, man, where it's so hard that you can't, you can't explain. It's like, man, I'm going through this, but like, how am I still filled with this internal joy? You know, how do I have so much peace in this situation? And so that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you. And so. You know, the back of the firm, Peterson Howard and Judge John, experienced that. Which aspect of each of those other individuals that you run to come from being around Howard and? Um, man, those guys have such a great mentality, man. I just really love their mentality, especially Q as well.
You know, I talked about Will Howard, his leadership, but Quinch, I'm a mentality man. That boy just, yeah, that boy just gifted, you know, you see, you know, sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like, you know, he should have a negative five yards. And as soon as you know it, you know, he, that running through somebody, stiff arm, and somebody, and she, that's a gain of 10. And so. Do some of the things that he does, he just realizes to be different than actually. Yeah. Um, shoot, I think. Yeah, man, I think it's just like, he's just gifted, man, too, beyond it. He's just gifted, you know, he's, he's a big back, you know, he's strong. And so, um, you know, he's, he's able to do, he's able to do those things. And so, um, yeah, man, it's definitely, you know, I look at his game and I want to, you know, at the same time, I want to learn from Quinch, you know, I want to look at his game and it's like, man, where, where can I get better at as well? You know, that's the type of player I am. I'm always looking to get better, man. I'm always looking to grow as a player. What's your last two to three? Julian Sand. Oh, yeah, he's going to be a great, but he's going to be a great quarterback, man. He's so, so accurate. And so, um, he's definitely, man, I know Coach Dez is definitely going to get him right.
Just, you know, um, continue to grow as a leader, continue to grow as a player. And so he's going to, he's going to be really good for our state. Uh, he's, I know just the quarterback position. Um, I feel like, you know, the quarterbacks in the past, they've, they've definitely been vocal. And so I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to, um, ask Julian Sand as well. It's to be that vocal leader and lead, um, and lead the offense and lead the team. Thanks, guys. Thanks, guys. Shoot, man. He has, he has a build like JK Dobbins. And, um, I kind of see them, you know, similar, similarities in their game as well. And I know JK Dobbins, he was a great running back. I feel like he's not talked about his, no, um, a lot, but man, his career here, you watch his highlights is, is great. I remember, um, before I recruit, before I committed here, I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights like every, every, um, one of his years here, like four or five times. And so, man, he was such a great back. And, um, I feel like, you know, um, when I see JK Dobbins, when I see, um, James people, I see similarities to both of their games.
I feel like they play the same. Appreciate you all. Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. Well, I got coming in last year. I knew the role. So I just tacked Eric Dave really the same way. Basically, basically, basically, how different are you? Wait, wise, body, wise on that? Um, I think I got a lot bigger. I'm like 240, you know, like 240, 4 right now. Last year, I played it like 236, 237. What does it feel like at 244? Or maybe I'll be able to feel like almost a different machine out there. Yeah. What does it feel like to be running around out there like you are, but with more, uh, more bad. I just feel like I'm like, like, like, more downhill, like stronger. Like I'm taking all the bloods better. It's a bit more. Is it daunting? Uh, maybe that's not the correct term, but to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year. And you played quite a bit last year and stuff. What do you have to get straight in your head about being on the field that much more? Is it going to get ready to just play 30 more snaps? So.
But are you, are you, how would you describe how much you're looking forward to it from an instant? Yeah. I'm looking forward to it. I'm ready for it. I'm ready for it. Texas opener. It's a rematch. But it's not really two different teams compared to the last time you all played and stuff. How has that enhanced this camp for you and this team getting ready for the, we're an opener of that magnitude? Yeah, with an opener like that, we've been, um, we've been emphasizing it a lot. We know we got coming. So we know we got to do. We've been preparing for it. Already just probably. Um, I think Riley ready to play right now. He, he advanced freshman like he ended up here in the book. He stood in like he advanced and his measurements was crazy. Like he saw like the saw line to. You said you're ready. What was that process like during last season? Could you feel yourself becoming more and more ready for whatever the team needed? Yeah, because that's pretty much what my role was. Just whenever I was needed, I had to step up. So I feel like that's what built me into me being able to say I'm ready for this year.
When you say ready, is it more a physical thing? Is it a mental thing? When I say ready, I think it's pretty much like everything physically, mentally, mostly. I think I'm there. A different is that feeling this year. I asked a little more time. How different is that response? All that was last year. I feel like it's a way bigger responsibility with me having to step up this year, but I kind of go about it the same way. Like last year, I was intentional with everything I did. I feel like this year is going to be the same thing. It's probably a little bit more. Somebody you some reason. And what word? How's anybody worked you watch? I say. Scrabbing. When you think of me, you think of like a bullet, like a silver bullet.
I'm really a bullet. I'm always on the ball. That's how I like to play a thing. No, I ain't got to be my nickname, but. Oh, yeah. Yeah. How does that fit you? And what are you enjoying about? I think it fit me because. I don't know. I just like the defense. I feel like we got like you said, we got a lot of freedom and we're moving around a lot. A lot of the terms is like, you know, I don't know. I don't really not answer that. You can go on your instincts a little bit more, maybe. I don't even know if I say that because there's a lot of thinking going on, but it's like. I just like it's deep. I like how it's pretty deep. I like what you got going on. What was it sad when CJ left the way? No, I wanted to much sad. I was kind of like happy fun. No, that's what you want.
No, that's my dog. I'm going to say it. Kind of miss him a little bit, but I'm happy fun. Well, go ahead one last question. Coach Daze talked a lot about the guys who played some last year, but maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for. That wasn't maybe your national championship you guys will win your own. How much do you feel that is guy who certainly contributed last year, but will be in this bigger role and a lot of some of your classmates? Yeah, I do feel like. Yeah, I do feel like I did win a national championship, but like you said, my role wasn't same as how it's going to be this year. So yeah, I definitely want to go get another one experienced that like feeling with me be on the field, a lot more place. Well, thank you very much. I've been using you, you know, and that almost at safety role of stuff. How much is it grown that you can put your finger on? Yeah, I was growing immensely. I mean, Caleb, he makes a lot of checks. Latham makes a lot of checks. I listen to them. Whatever they need. If I need to cover somebody out, I'll go cover anybody that they need me to do run support.
I'll do run support. And it's really what Caleb does. What we do in Latham. It just goes back to the coach G's preparation and everyone's preparation to give us more flexibility. And it doesn't matter who's in those positions. And we can all play every position whether it's covering somebody or running and tackling. Did you feel like that was the case before the Oregon game? You're saying what I'm saying? Is that something that's been added? It just, you know, rely on a little bit more. Go ahead. Yeah, it did. I've probably been a broska game, Megan and more safety reps. And we had a five week to prepare. So I really learned to play book a lot more. Even though I knew the playbook, I learned a lot more. Mount like in debt, you know, so really just after the Oregon game, it helped me a lot to go back to safety. Go go to nickel everywhere. You guys had a lot of issues of giving up big plays in the passing game of the first game against Oregon. What do you feel you guys need to do better this time around to make sure that doesn't happen?
Just the same same mindset. We got to challenge these receivers, you know, every dog has her day. Maybe some people didn't have their day that game, but we'll look out there and hopefully change the narrative. And we still play with the same confidence, same technique and, yeah. Bill Rebellion, what's the problem with this batch? And it tends to obviously have a tough game and that one. What have you seen from him and how he's responded? Do you get a sense of from him? How he's for this rematch? He's super stoked for this rematch. His preparation has been very good. He's always been preparing, you know, it didn't go the way he wanted to go that game, but he just always had his confidence. And we're going to see a big game out of him this week. And, you know, I know you guys wanted to play them in anapolis, but the fact that you get to play them at the Rose Bowl, I mean, get a second chance. And people have said he don't get that very often. How determined are you guys to take advantage of it?
We're super, super determined. We watched film. I mean, we've lost a lot of film. The first time we played them, now we've got another six games that they played up film to watch. And it's just they've grown a lot as a team. Same as us. We've grown a lot. We're not the same team. We were when we played them week one or weeks, six or whatever, but now we're out there and going to play fast, physical and everything like that. Jordan, we're going to jump to the to assume a question here from Joey Coffman. Columbus this back. Oh, my bad. Not too Joey. Cameron T. Robinson. The athletic. Hey, Jordan, you've moved around a lot in the second day in your career and now kind of getting some many more safety reps. What is it like at this point when when Walt or Coach Mills comes to you and asks you to do some else and just how much can you lean on the experiences you've had moving around when you're trying to. To learn something new in the middle of season means a lot. We always talk about this is being on selfish. Whether that's making plays or not making plays or doing your job so another person can make plays.
That's kind of what we pride ourselves on and it's just fun. Me moving around different positions. I'm always up for a new challenge and a lot of people in the country can't do that. I just hold myself to that standard where I can play any position and excel at it. Okay, anybody else need to question let me know but otherwise we can go to Austin or the podcast. Jordan, when you were talking about watching film or again, which one do you think is more valuable to you watching that against yourself? Seven games ago, even if you've changed or the ensuing six games for Oregon, which one do you put more stock in? Kind of both. For me, I kind of watch what I did, things I did well, things I didn't do too well against them. And their team, their scheme has changed. Some players have been out those stretch of games. So I really watched the past game we played and I know they're going to go back to some of the stuff that they liked of course. And different games like Penn State, maybe Illinois, they run a lot of men so just watching stuff like that. Every game matters.
So, yeah. Jordan, thank you very much. Thank you. I really plan as much so I just wanted to get more experience under my belt. So I can bring younger guys with me because I've been through a lot of these. One of those younger guys, we're seeing it out here. It's the first time I've scored all of your last years. What have you seen from Will? Because I kind of felt like my friend, we all forgot about him because he was hurt. Now he's running almost a second man up behind you and tied. What have you seen from those games? Will is a workhorse. He goes, stay quiet. He's going to work hard. And that's what I love about him. He focuses. He don't really talk much. He's going to get a job done, do a job right. He rarely has any mistakes. What would be his accessible season? A national championship? A ring? When? All the games we don't want to lose anything. We got a mindset that we can't beat. We just got to go show it. That mindset different. It seems like you guys expect a national championship every year. This year even more so.
You guys have all come back for this. You guys have all decided like that. That was a lot of fun. Does that just keep feeling different? Or is there not really any difference? It's just the same work. It's definitely a difference. Everyone working harder. We know this our last run. Most of us don't have any years after this. So we got to go bigger, go home and we're not trying to go home. Finish big. We know what you guys think of Michigan. But when you look at what they did, they won the national championship. And you guys took them down to the final minute. You know what I mean? You were right there. Something goes a little different. You guys could have won that game against them. Does that tell you anything about like that? You guys want to win a national championship. But you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the national championship last year. Like you're that close. So I'm saying we just like work harder. That's kind of coach makes a saying. You know, nobody cares. Just work harder. Like those, you know, when we played Georgia, it's the same thing. Last, last play. You know, they went on the win in 90. So we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season.
I think we'll be fine. How frustrating is that? You're that close against the last two national titles. Of course, it's frustrating. But you can't change the outcome. You can't really dwell on it. You just got to come back and work harder. Do things better than you did last year. And hopefully the outcome will change. Is that as you get older, you kind of learn. I thought that was working harder than you always find out there's a little more than you could have been doing. Yeah, definitely. I mean, that's what growing up is basically in college. I thought freshman year I was working as hard as I could. But now I look back at it. I really wasn't working hard at all. I'm doing what I'm doing now. So just to learn anything. If the stamina is a 16, then the answer to what do you need it to be to be your best? 80, 85. I mean, I can, it's all on me. I think it's a little higher. I was just trying to be funny. But I mean, it's all on me. I just got to run harder in shape. It's been a thing.
The idea of potentially the 16 or 17 or 17, is every year. So what's the side of that idea that makes you nervous about, can you last that long? Do you have worries? I think I'll tell that out there. I think I definitely can last. I was just, you know, we got to get the young guys to come along with it. We can't play 50 snaps a game. That's just too much on our bodies. Just everybody's like, oh, line, D line. We got to get those younger guys to play. You know, get that pieces on the D line and the old line and everywhere else. So we can last that long. Speaking of that, I'm like, hey, my dog, never snaps. Did you like playing that new snap to the end last year? I don't know. I don't know if any of us were really expected to play that next time. Yeah, I did. Unless we were like winning by like a lot. I thought like, there are no moments you know, I can go sit down or something. But we're playing them big games like, you know, Notre Dame, too, or North, those kind of games. Of course, I want to be, because I know I can contribute. And I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I can get the job done. What stands out about Keid McDonald and his heat guy that came up with you guys in a second?
Oh, yeah, definitely. K-Mac is a K-Mac animal. Y'all, you haven't really seen it yet, but in practice, he shows all the time. He's just, he's growing right now. He has to work, I think. He just has to get, you know, in the playbook and things like that. You guys are about the exact same size. Listen, you're both listening to 630, you're 327, he's 326. Yeah, he's a very old guy. I kind of look at him like my junior, but you know, Keid might even be a great player. He's got to develop more and get into playbook. So really a lot on you older guys, there's that large group of young guys. And then there's the seniors in the back, is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys along as well? Yeah, definitely. We got to be leaders. Like I said, we got to have them play this year. We can't just play all the snaps. They got to get in there and get some work. And we got to get them right, throwing the all season so they can play. And I just played, they want to like contribute, like make plays, tackle the sex. It seems like these guys get bigger. Each one of the first in the class, because they're bigger or bigger.
Do those guys kind of, does it kind of value themselves the first? Yeah, they definitely use some big dudes. And they all work hard. I've only seen much of something day two when I'm not as on, but throughout the workouts, they've been working hard, you know, they're determined. I just say that. It looks like they're ready to work with me. How important this is. It feels like there's a lot of great defenses that you have big athletic defensive tactics, who can eat up space, but also move, you know, right? That is that. Is that an inquire that maybe for great defense to have guys like you that have some balls, but also have great feet? I think that is definitely, I think if you look at the last couple of national championship winners, like Team up North, they got two good, uh, detaco, two athletic detacos. Look at Georgia, two athletic detacos. I think that's definitely neat if you want to go on that big run and beat those big teams. If you think about this, they won't defied by the defense attack. What's Georgia, Jordan Davis and Daniel Carter?
What's Michigan? It's Chris Jenkins. Couple more questions. If you find this funny, like how, I mean, you understand it, which you play it. But I feel like some time I don't know, are people realizing how important defense tackles are? A little bit more than they used to? I think so. I think they're starting to develop to develop more and more of these like freakiest detacos. Yeah. Like in the combine, just now, you see in like those guys, they're moving four to four, seven, eight, and things like that. So we'll see. And when you think about this freakish attack, how do you think you fit into that bowl of that kind of player? You watch that and say, yeah, that's me. Yeah, definitely. I think I'm top notch when it comes to detacos, but I don't want to, you know, get a big head, but you know, watch the come on. I watch the dude do the drills. I have tape here, you're like, you're looking like my film. So I think I'm up there with all those times. Tyler, do you become like a artist who comes to the bad guy, passes the figure away, he's got your things? When you're going, you're not doing as much a weapon of a weapon.
How do you work on that? Do you have like a gold one, Marn? I don't remember how many ad lines you have going on. How many do you want to have? I mean, as many as I can have, I think I have more than that, but I think they've counted. I think they've counted some of them and it's some of them where I like just missed it. But I think we work on drills matching the hand. I think that's, uh, goes big. Uh, what we do is a D line, you know, just affecting the quarterback is, anyway, you can, it's just great for the defense, you know, just that little thing covering his eye, you know, he might throw it. A little bit to the left to our players. So it's something that you really, really have to work on. It's a theory that's one of the things that you've maybe worked on the most. So you're tired here because there are a few guys that I've seen. Like, oh, that passed me back down. We don't have to ask this, Tyler. We're kind of, kind of expected for the difference. I think I just have like a, like, a eye for the ball, kind of, just look at the quarterback and just, I see him, I load up. I just try to get in his way and sometimes he's those are two. So I'm here to do it to the I.
State quarterbacks. I mean, they get frustrated by, you know, we're a team, you know, we're just getting better. I should lot of, a lot of different backs, man, they just learn to grow for them. You got to pick your top three backs. You got to go right now. I don't really have a top three, but I'll give you, I'll give you one. I would say, say, Juan Gibbs and I like McCaffrey. Although he was injured this year, I like McCaffrey. Who's the best back in this drive? Best back in this drive. I lead that up the yard. That's y'all decision. Playing well with Howard, but I'm going to remember most. We're a Howard, man. He's just such a great leader, man. It's just like in moments where, you know, usually a lot of players, they fold, man. He was just always calm and relaxed, man. He just the leader that he was, man, that's one thing I'm going to remember about him.
Yeah, he's, he's going to be really good, man. He's on Coach Lock. I think he got the transfer in as well from West Virginia. He's got one, two punch with them both as well. They're going to be really good backs. And so James, people's, man, he's smart. The way that he goes about his business, man, he's mature. And so, man, he's growing, you know, just as a person and as a player. And so, man, yeah, definitely Ohio State, you know, that running back room is in great hands. I was right there looking at the UFC spot and I was talking about his personality and the approach of health. I'll keep that up until they say my name. Yeah. Coach, Coach Hartlein, man. He's full of energy, man. And he's creative as well, you know, just learning from him as well, you know, trying to run more outside the backfield. He was being able to learn from Coach Hartlein. And so, he's definitely creative at what he does and he brings a lot of energy to the team as well. And so, I think that would do really good. Straight away, he's on a plate with a playoff card. That's what he was most interested in. Just intensity, man.
And since he got the playoffs, every game and it's like the intensity got, you know, higher and higher. So, you know, being able, I know in the lead, it's the same thing. Even if it's not the playoff, just every game and the intensity, it keeps getting higher and higher. So, yeah, you just, I know you got to bring it, you know, each and every day and come in and work just like Ohio State. You know, I definitely feel like Ohio State. They definitely do a good job of preparing us for that. You know, I just remember even before going through this process, I'll talk to a lot of players before that. And they told me a lot of just about how much Ohio State prepared them, you know, for the NFL. And so, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I know I took a couple days off after the National Championship and then shoot right after that. I'm writing sample Florida and I'm right to it. And so, yeah, I think while I trained, I trained at Yo-Murth Performance.
Yeah. Yeah. No, man. It's really all about technique and then it's about mindset as well. And so, I say, you know, it's for the love of my brother. It's for the love of Will Howard. It's for the love of the receiver. It's why I got on the perimeter. just making sure you know first of all my quarterback doesn't get sacked and I told will I think it was before the first game I was like I got your brother it's I said man I'm not gonna let you get hit you know and so I don't know if I don't know if I gave up a sack I'm not sure that but I know if I did I haven't
given up too many and so man it's for the love of my brothers though man making sure the ball get in their hands you know the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed in my game you can't really work on this you know in all season I feel like it's more so you know you got to put the pads on you got to go through some inside run you know maybe it's really just continuing run through tackles and so that's I feel like that's one of the areas in my game you know I want to continue to get better I feel like I did a good job of that my senior and so I just want to continue to build on that yes I did yes I did I did me with New Orleans as well I never got that comparison actually I know I'm a Camara sure yeah man I would come here great great back man just what he does and those 101 matchups he's dangerous man and he's so smooth he's so smooth as well I'm not going to lie he's smooth yeah inside zone from
stack being able to hit that thing downhill and I'll say the next one it's probably just an option route out of the backfield you know and man and man coverage you're getting on that linebacker and so yeah I say the man the biggest thing is the way that he carries himself man in a way that man he approaches the game he comes in with the mindset you know he's going to work every single week you know every practice you know he's working hard you know even shoot I don't know every good I think he had every game was a good game for him man and so but still man he always has the mentality to mindset that you know he's gonna come in each and every day he's gonna continue to work and get better man and so he's definitely man he's gonna be a special player man he really is man a lot of ups and downs man it's just how
you respond to adversity and I feel like that's something that God has definitely helped me to do better is this not have something to lean on now you know I remember before I met him you know going through those adversity I had nothing to run to you know you can run to people but they still can't it's not too much they can't truly help you you know I feel like you know I feel like the only person that can truly help you is your relationship with Jesus Christ and so being able to lean on him you know he gives you in those moments where it's tough you know where it's low and when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about he gives you he gives you that peace and comfort you know even in those moments man we're so hard that you can't you can't explain it's like man I'm going through this but like how am I still filled with this internal joy you know how do I have so much peace in this situation and so that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you and so you know the back of the front of the power of judgements which aspect to each of those other individuals of the show and to follow and from being around power and
um man eight those guys have such a great mentality man I might just really love their mentality especially um Q as well you know I talked about Will Howard his leadership but Quincham mentality man um that boy just yeah that boy just gifted you know you see you know sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like you know he should have a negative five yards and as soon as you know it you know he that running through somebody step on somebody and she was a gang of 10 and so yeah man I think it's just like he's just gifted man to be honest he's just gifted you know he's he's a big back you know he's strong and so you know he's he's able to do he's able to do those things and so yeah man it's definitely you know I look at his game and I want to you know at the same time I want to learn from Quincham you know I want to look at this game is like man where where can I get better at as well you know that's the type of player I am I'm always looking to get better man I'm always looking to grow as a player
Julian San oh yeah he's gonna be a great but he's gonna be a great quarterback man he's so so accurate and so he's definitely man I know Coach Dez definitely gonna get him right just you know um container grow as a leader continue to grow as a player and so he's going he's gonna be really good for high state uh he's that I know just the quarterback position I feel like you know the quarterbacks in the past they've they've definitely been vocal and so I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to ask of Julian San as well it's to be that vocal leader and lead the and lead the offense and lead the steam shoot man he has he has a bill like JK Dobbins and I kind of see them you know similarities in their game as well and I know JK Dobbins he was a great running back I feel like he's not talked about his none a lot but man his career here you watch his highlights is great I remember before I recruit before I committed here I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights like every every
one of his years here like four or five times and so man he was such a great back and I feel like you know when I see JK Dobbins when I see James people I see similarities to both of their games I feel like they play the same so
I got coming in last I knew the role so I just tacked Eric Dave really the same way basically basically how different are you weight wise body wise on that from the year ago I think I got a lot bigger I'm like 240 you know like 240 for right now last year I played it like 236 to 37 what does it feel like a 244 or better you feel like almost a different machine out there yeah what's it what does it feel like to be running around out there like you are but with more more back I just feel like I'm like like like more downhill like stronger like I'm taking all the blood's better it's bigger is it don't think maybe that's not the correct term but to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year and you played quite a bit last year instead what do you have to get straight in your head about being on the field that much more this is got to get ready to just play 30 more snacks so are you are you how would you describe how
much you're looking forward to it from an eight-stand point yeah I'm looking forward to it I'm ready for it my I'm ready for it it's a rematch so it's not really two different teams compared to us I'm going to play stuff how's that enhanced this camp for you and this team getting ready for the where an opener of that magnitude yeah with an opener like that we've been we've been emphasizing in a lot we know we got coming so we know we got to do we're prepared for it I think Riley ready to prepare right now he he advanced freshman like he ended he in the book he stood in like he advanced and his measurements was crazy like he saw like the saw like to say you're ready what was that process like during last season could you feel yourself becoming more and more ready yeah cuz that's pretty much what my role was just whenever I was needed I had to step up so I feel like that's what built me into me being able to say I'm ready for this year when you say ready is it more a physical thing is it a
mental thing when I say ready I think it's pretty much like everything physically mentally mostly I think I'm there a different is that you want to get your specialized well asked a one more time oh I feel like it's a it's a way bigger responsibility with me having to step up this year but I kind of go about it the same way like last year I was attention over everything I did I feel like this year it's gonna be the same thing it's probably a little bit more it won't work I say describe like now I say like when you think of me you would think of like a like a bullet like a silver bullet I don't really a bullet I'm always on the ball that's
how I like to play a thing no I ain't got to be my nickname but oh yeah yeah oh think it fit me cuz I don't know I just like the defense I feel like we got like you said we got a lot of freedom and we're moving around a lot a lot of the times is like no I don't know I don't really know how to answer that I don't even know if I say that cuz there's a lot of thinking going on but it's like I just like it's like I like I'm pretty pretty because I like what you got going on uh now I want to say that I was kind of like happy fun yeah that's what you want no that's my dog I'm gonna say yeah kind of missing a little bit
but yeah I'm happy fun though I don't think go ahead one last quick coach days talked a lot about the guys who played some last year but maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for that wasn't maybe your national championship you guys will win your own yeah how much do you feel that as a guy who certainly contributed last year but will be in this bigger role and along with some of your classmates yeah I do feel like um yeah I do feel like I did win a national championship but like you said my role wasn't the same as how's gonna be this year so yeah I definitely want to want to go get another one experienced that like feeling me be on the field a lot more place it's great oh Bell thank you very much so I feel and I just think you need to turn out sometimes like basketball I want to be on that just like defend but you know you're gonna stay in stitch going somewhere exactly yeah that's a great question I mean I don't think I feel like these two can answer that for the beer right now I think KK here
of the answer I don't know I don't know what to say about that what do you guys think I go games every day you know this man is strong ready I'm talking about like you get the basketball feel like you can't just see what this I know he's really fast just the over on the ground and he got the grip he doesn't give up on the play and like you said he's gonna go over here and watch the film he's doing every day and then better man he should see them on the field like this one he's not like this nine can see the proof in every game here if you respond around or all the imagine he's not like a coach man he's not like a coach chip Kelly's influence change your mind about maybe like the idea of tack over his jar because obviously his offensive predeliteals were like yeah the offensive line play we're in there as you can a part of you settling in the guard that's um I want to say maybe I don't know but I mean when I when I'm pretty sure you got the job I was really excited
because I'm one of those guys is the tempo I can run with the tempo you know I mean I'm I'm playing basketball all life in set of football and I feel like just the fast pace often so we're running really fits the guys we have right now I'm really excited for that I know you can throw a football like 65 guys but can you kick a football 75 years like Lincoln just probably question Lincoln what was your question how is your your roommate after you he's a blessing man I can't complain he's a great guy his name's Lincoln keen holes okay oh who's cleaner I think we're both really clean that's why we kind of picked each other's roommates because we're very clean and we don't like our rooms really messy well it's true though it's the truth it broke pretty clean so Luke are you still cross training at TACO's on or if you just been all guard this break oh so far I've been all guard um I really don't know like I said I'm taking it practice my practice I could end up being back at TACO I could not but you know I'm just really focused in on this past practice and the next thing
I mean a lot um you know you put a lot of work in to play here and it's been a dream just for being in Ohio kid is I'm from Ohio kids perspective it's I mean that's the biggest wish possible I would if I would say that's that'd be pretty cool what was it like just last year first game getting off the field for the first time it didn't like this could be a weird answer but it I feel like I was playing a game yet if that makes sense I hit I was pretty locked in I felt like just no anxiousness no stress no nothing really I just went in that first game was like shoot out here now it's time to roll you know it didn't really hit me I was like it didn't even hit me after but no mom was like what'd you feel there and if like getting out there in the end I just like honestly I don't know I felt less nervous I didn't high school and it makes no sense you um a lot I mean I'm learning from Josh and Austin I think prior to where my biggest role models here is my bigger big brother my first game I'm up to do okay yeah no yeah yeah so yeah
to be in Austin those are my guys man I'm even miles to I mean all three of them that's those are my roommates and they're progressing every day as well and I'm excited to see where they where they can get to I'm excited to plan and feel with them oh yeah you know I've been really helpful you know just keep in my mind just settled and straightforward on the next play it's a great question um like I said I mean I just need to take consistent in my work I think that's the biggest thing for me is just ain't consistent and worry about the next play so you got it from the guy you were in the play yeah wow that's weird yeah that's mean I guess they didn't want to get my nerves up but like I was ready I mean I did I took most of the ones that solved camping I mean I was already I was pretty much that I wasn't really nervous to start the game yeah what was his advice to you yeah he said you got it you mean you're going against Tyler and Kyle every day and practice me and it's not different almost different you
know about to pretend that it starts into as a as a player you know having having that under your belt me I'm more confident I know what's going on I can see like I can see what's going on with the defense I know what's going on I know what's coming I mean I understand the game's a lot better than what it was like yeah which adds up to what faster start yeah yeah yeah yeah playing with that does for a line I mean if we get out early it's get the defense change in place I think they're the defense you start fast I mean they're trying to get the calming play but you start faster I'm not going back you but trust a lot of trust yeah of course days pretty much said though you deserve to play man you know some warm up fast what were you expecting this week from terms of your role um where they need me if it's left right wherever I need to go in I go in of like to do the front of me I like playing tackle um took me back to high school days but I should back in high school it wasn't really random ball up really into him passes but
it was fun change got my made my feet better I would say they want me there I guess I'll play I mean they need me they need me also in the illness that swept through the office line room a lot of times the coaches and players just said that I was still relying for the groom you know getting you experience among others what was that like for you and double dipping playing some tag or playing some guard the same practice it was based like a group effort like for me you know we had guys out and we just had to go back practice um all five guys is wherever they were playing we just got to go in how much of that accelerate your development like that time with the ones you actually get it they really said then um I was jumped in there I didn't really know let me like one or two practices with practices but like after those I was like I would get my confidence through um yeah it seemed like there was sort of a settling in process for you
in the Akron game maybe play got better if the game went on it and really need to especially in the ground game things seem to take off but what was there a moment when it clicked on the field for you like was there nerves and then a time of settling in I guess how taking you through kind of that first game mentally yeah um first game obviously you're gonna have nerves be the first time starter but then like after the first couple plays meaning you have nerves naturally so that's first complete I was good I was just rolling also it's a weird mean first time striker player I was also the first star yeah um you yeah it's like I prepared well um and camp and practice all week and I was I was ready um yeah I have two multi-year starters it did a lot I mean I could ask them hey what we got here but I mean I was prepared well I mean I was telling Jimmy and said it's like hey we the way our blocks were probably emotional excited it wasn't just that's a guy from Ohio what
is it mean they had started me it was always my dream to come here and play and start and having that like I mean I just gotta keep going keep building those days and those games and just keep building what a much younger Austin though you do it for me with that uh no not I don't think even I told like me I asked my younger self even committing I wouldn't believe that now I have a couple of starts yeah awesome has this happened faster than you I guess you're technically a soft no I knew that year two I was gonna see you some playing time now starting week one year two I didn't receive that but like I was ready in spring ball like I knew I was going I was going to play some soft things but what does it mean to you to it's not only get the opportunity to play but like you play well enough now maybe coaching staff trust you they would be in the but out there whatever the situation would be to earn that so early on the year two
I guess it shows like my preparation my hard work and just everything I put into this and I just finally show it up on a field there a moment the top season in the end of the spring and again I don't realize that you could play at this high level with the ones you know if you yeah uh the definitely was in training camp means blocking highly can tie every day so like it feels feels a lot of confidence and doing it well and not like getting balled or anything so there's a hero in Jason Moore and Taiwan all those guys pretty much anyone on his deepened mind gets your face out of time so and came back as well so yeah you also you've heard a lot of them I would work like the power of up the stability and the great thing in the line how much can he help you he helped me a lot and I'm proud that he's our starting center not someone else's but um I mean he's like the captain of the line he's another
voice on the line with guys like Josh Fryer and Josh Simmons Donnie and Tiger that means another voice and another captain up there look ways of having that and I'm with this much experience help a lot he can tell you like before the play was going on like how to block someone like what you need to do and like helps a lot Tiger talking about how calm he is how much does that benefit you have a guy who's kind of been there and it makes us more calm like especially me and Tay let's first start so like we were up here with what's said like he brought us down I mean we were like fine like our emotions weren't high we settled in is that like something he tells you is that something you pick up on by how he's acting how do you kind of mean sense what he's trying to do by how he's acting and what I mean him when we're on the side of him both Josh Donnie like he was telling us like hey we're cool like we got him but it's
pretty much like everyone old cool group how much do that as a first time starter how much did you add that so me and a lot that was my first time ever using high pads we didn't use the high pads in high school but I mean you can say like try to remember the defense you can just come on a silent bring them we'll play and get help though really not probably the first or second we'll back after the I thought we say oh and settle in awesome thank you very much it seems like training part is a part of but it's not the whole thing they're getting bigger it's like the culture part of the part of the and how much of the fact is that in a part of your change that's it's also it's a lot and I mean it's and I feel like you can't be able to transform your body like I like I have with like people here come and do that without having that mentality apart with it it's like we we always talk about competitions here and our our culture is fight so we're always here to compete and I
feel like that is just that's what gets you in this mindset when you talk about that transformation you just give us a little sense maybe with numbers or body fat or like you're the weight group how big is that transformation definitely I don't have really specific numbers but just like it's more just like I can just I feel like feeling when I'm playing like I remember how I felt to play when I just got here and now I know how how it feels to play like like like just today like it feels physically different on my body it's like it's just it's I'm getting used to that makes sense I can't imagine feeling like that Kadea also said about you that you are just a completely different guy from last year we hear the word this year so let's get it done yeah look so you're here do you feel like you weren't at that place mentally I think I was but I think I had some uh I would say like kind of like confidence issues like
I was just but you know I mean I work past it and uh I know I can I know why I am and I know I can be here so if you have confidence issues how do you get through is it yourself as your teammates there's somebody in your family the big people you that you can do it um I know I can do it it's not like that's those are those are all it's on the past now did the past the play time in a very obvious opportunity guys had to step up to be able to be on the business that helped you kind of get over that confidence issue there because it's now a devence of your opportunity so kind of it's just like um just I mean it's just just being here like I feel like being here every day working with the guys every day it's just like you know you become this person that you might not have like uh you might not have like felt like you were before that but like coming here working
every day stacking these days like like you know I mean I just feel like I I realized who I am and I know what I can do now well I want to be able to do this but are you this is the second time like convince yourself that you actually belong here and you can I knew I knew I could play here I mean it's just it was like the like I just I don't know how to explain I just like I've always known I could play here it's just I'm just like let's go like I'm ready like I'm ready to attack what are guys the room to help you to figure that out for the first shot think KJ was a big influence tie Hamilton tie league they all they all helped me a bunch last year kind of just pushing through you know I really plan as much so I just wanted to get like more experience under my belt so I can know bring the other guys with me because I've been through one of those younger guys we're seeing it on the first time we've seen from well because I feel like I should
be all forgot about it because he was hurt now he's running you know almost a second man up behind you and you tied what have you seen you remember which means right? well as a workhorse he he's gonna stay quiet he's gonna work hard and that's all I love about the beat the focus is he don't really talk much he's just gonna get the job done do a job right rarely has any mistakes so what what would be a successful season a national championship I ring when all the games we don't want to lose anything we got a mindset that we can't be beat and we just gotta go show it that might be different seems like you guys expect the national championship every year this year even more so you guys have all come back for this you guys have all decided like enough as a mom is that is to keep feeling difference or is there not really any difference it's just the same word it's definitely a difference everyone working harder um we noticed our last run like we most of us don't have any years after this so we got to go go bigger going home and we not going to finish big we know what you guys think of Michigan but when you look at what they
did they won the national championship and you guys took them down to the final minute right you know what I mean I mean you you were right there something goes a little different you guys could have been one that came against them does that tell you anything about like that hey you guys want to win a national championship but you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the national championship last year like you're that close this I'm saying uh we just like work harder that's that's kind of coach makes uh saying you know nobody cares just work harder like those you know when we played Georgia it's the same thing uh last last play you know they went on the win in 90 so we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season I think we'll be fine how frustrating is that you're that close against the last two national title? uh of course as you know it's frustrating but you can't change the outcome you can't really do I don't uh do I own it you just gotta you know come back and work harder do things better than you did last year and hopefully the outcome will change. As that is you get a order you kind of learn and I thought that was working hard and you always find out there's a little more you could have been doing it? Yeah definitely I mean that's how that's
what growing up is basically in college and I thought freshman year I was working it's hard as I could but now I look back at it I really wasn't working hard at all compared to what I'm doing now so just to learn anything. uh 80 85 I mean I can it's all on me I just I think it's a little higher I was just trying to be funny but I mean it's all on me I just got to run harder in shape. I think I think I definitely can last I was just you know we got to get the young guys to come along with us we can't play for the snaps again that's just too much on our bodies uh just everybody like online D-line we got to get those younger guys to play you know get
depth pieces on the D-line and O-line and everywhere else so we can last at the long run. Ah yeah I did unless we were like winning by like a lot uh I thought like there are no some moments you know I can go sit down or something but we're playing them big games like you know Notre Dame too or North those kind of games of course I want to be because I know I can contribute and I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I get the job done. Oh yeah definitely K-MAC is uh K-MAC's animal y'all you haven't really seen it yet but in practice he shows all the time he's just he's just he's growing right now he has to work I think he just has to get you know in the playbook things like that. You guys are about the exact same size. Listen you're both listening six three you're three twenty seven he's three twenty six. Yeah he's I kind of look at him like my my junior but you know K-MAC he's gonna be a great player he's got to develop more and
get into playbook. So really a lot on you older guys there's that large group of young guys and then there's the seniors in your back is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys yeah definitely we got to be leaders um like I say we got to have them play this year we can't just play all the snaps they got to get in there and get some work and we got to get them right during the all season so they can play and not just play they want to like contribute like make plays tackles sex. It seems like these guys get bigger each one of the first one of the class uh the most guys kind of does kind of why you don't solve the first one. Yeah they're definitely some big dudes um and they all work hard I'm really seeing much it's only a day two and not not a pass on but throughout the workouts they've been working hard you know they they're determined to actually uh and it looks like they're ready to work with me. How important this dude feels like there's a lot of great defenses that you have big athletic defensive tactics you can eat up space but also move you know right there is that
is that an inquire that maybe from a great defense to have guys like you that have some fault but also a great team. I think that is definitely I think if you look at the last uh a couple of national championship winners are like team up north they you know they got two good uh detacled two athletic detacles look at Georgia two athletic detacles so I think that's definitely neat if you want to go on that big run and beat those big teams. Okay, if you think about this they're going to fight by the defense with actors like what's Georgia's Jordan Davis and Janet Carter and let's miss you again it's Chris Jenkins. Couple more questions for you. It is funny like how I mean you understand it because you play it but I feel like some time I don't know are people realizing how important defense tackles are a little bit more than they used to. I think so uh I think they're starting to develop to develop more and more of these like freakiest detacles. Yeah like in the combines it's not you seeing like those guys they're moving forward to four seven eights and things like that so we'll see and when you think it when you think about this freakish athletic defense attack how do
you think you fit into that mold of that kind of player. You watch that and say yeah that's me. Yeah definitely I think I'm top notch when it comes to detacles but I don't want to you know get a big head but you know watch it come on I watch you do the drills. I have tapes here you like you're looking like my film so I think I'm up there with all those guys. Tyler, can you become like a artist who comes to the bad guy's class? I think the way he's having your things. I mean you're going to break practice. You're not doing as much a weapon as a person. How do you work on that? Do you have like a goal in mind? I don't remember how many you had last year. You have a goal in mind? How many do you want to have this? I mean as many as I can have I think I have more than that but I think he said it on me. I think it counts some of them and it's some of them where I like just missed it so but I think we work on drills matching the hand I think that's uh goes big and uh what we do is a D line you know just affecting the quarterback is anywhere you can it's just great for the defense you know it's that little thing covering his eye you know he might throw it a little bit to the left to our player so
so it's something that you really really have to work on. Because there are a few guys that I've seen like oh that passed me about it. I think I just have like a like a eye for the ball kind of I kind of just look at the quarterback and just I see him like load up I just try to get in his way and sometimes he just throws it to me. I mean they get frustrated but you know we're a team you know we're just good but I should lot of a lot of different backs man they just learn and grow for them. If you want to pick your top three backs you have a ball right now. I don't really have a top three but I'll give you I'll give you one I would say say quan Gibbs and I like McCaffrey. Although he was injured this year I like McCaffrey.
Best back in this draft I'll lead that up the yard that's y'all that's y'all decision. Playing well Howard when I'm going to remember most. We're Howard man he's just such a great leader such a great leader man it's just like in moments where you know usually a lot of players they fold man he was just always calm and relax man he just the leader that he was man that's one thing I'm gonna remember about him. Yeah he's shoot he's gonna be really good man he's on Coastal lock I think he got the transfer in as well from West Virginia just that one two punch with them both as well They're gonna be really good backs and so James people's man he's smart the way that he goes about his business man He's mature and so man he's growing you know just as a person in as a player and so man yeah definitely Ohio State you know that running back room is in gray hands. Yeah coach coach hard line man he's full of energy man and he's creative as well you know
I'm just learning from him as well you know I'm trying to run more outside the back field was being able to learn from coach hard line and so he's definitely creative at what he does and he brings a lot of energy to the team as well and so I think that'd do really good. Just intensity man and sensitivity of the playoffs every game and it's like the intensity got you know higher and higher and so you know being able I know in the lead it's the same thing even if it's not the playoffs just every every game and intensity it keeps getting higher and higher and so yeah you just I know you got to bring it you know each and every day and come in and work just like Ohio State you know I definitely feel like Ohio State they definitely do a good job of preparing us for that you know I just remember even before going through this process I'll talk to a lot of players before then and they told me a lot of just about how much Ohio State prepared them you know for the NFL and so yeah yeah yeah I know I took a couple days off after the national championship and
shoot right after that I'm writing right in Tampa Florida and I'm right to it and so yeah I think where I trained I trained that your worth performance I think it's called the House of Athlete or the compound now they did they did a good job man it just bringing us in and the way they went about training us man they were they did a really good job the bucket in the airs know I haven't really good city Tampa Tampa nice this nice it's a nice city man really nice uh the 40 to broad and avert yeah yeah no man uh it's really all about technique and then it's about mindset as well and so I say you know it's for the love of my brother it's for the love of will highway it's for the love of the receivers who I got on the perimeter just making sure you know first of all my quarterback doesn't get sacked and I I told will I think it was before the first game I was like I got your brother
it's uh I said man I'm not gonna let you get hit you know um and so I don't know if I don't know if I gave up a sack I'm not sure that um but I know if I did I haven't given up too many and so man it's for the love of my brothers though man making sure the ball get in their hands you know the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed in my game uh you can't really work on this you know in all season I feel like it's more so you know you got to put the pads on you got to go through some inside run you know maybe uh it's really just continuing run through tackles and so that's I feel like that's one of the areas in my game you know I want to continue to get better at I feel like I did a good job of that my senior and so I just want to continue to build on that yes I did yes I did uh I did meet with um New Orleans as well um I never got that comparison actually um I know
I have a command shoot yeah man I have a command great great back man um just what he does and knows 101 matchups he's dangerous man and he's so smooth he's so smooth as well I'm not going like he's smooth yeah um inside zone from stack being able to hit that thing downhill and um I say the next one it's probably just an option route out of the backfield you know and man and man coverage you're getting on that linebacker and so yeah I say the man the biggest thing is the way that he carries himself man in the way that man um he approaches the game he comes in with the monster you know he's going to work every single week you know every practice you know he's working hard you know um even shoot I don't know every good I think he had every game was a good
game for him man and so but still man he always has the mentality to mindset that you know he's going to come in each and every day he's going to continue to work and get better man and so he's definitely man he's going to be a special player man he really is so you know you look like on your last game yeah but we were a lot stuck in you know some injuries man a lot of ups and downs man it's just how you respond to adversity and I feel like that's something that God has definitely helped me to do better is just um not have something to lean on now you know I remember before I met him you know going through those adversity I had nothing to run to you know you can run to people but they still can't it's not too much they can't truly help you you know I feel like you know I feel like the only person that can truly help you is your relationship with Jesus Christ and so being able to lean on him you know he gives you in those moments where it's tough you know where it's slow and um when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about um he gives you he gives you that peace and comfort you know um even in those moments man where it's so hard that you can't you can't
explain it's like man I'm going through this but like how am I still feel with this internal joy you know how do I have so much peace in this situation and so that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you and so um man eight those guys have such a great mentality man I might just really love their mentality especially um Q as well you know I talked about Will Howard his leadership but Quinch I'm mentality man um that boy just yeah that boy just gifted you know you see you know sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like you know he should have a negative five yards and as soon as you know it you know he that running through somebody still farming somebody and she just gained a 10 it's uh shoot I think
yeah man I think it's just like he's just gifted man to be honest he's just gifted you know he's he's a big back you know he's strong and so um you know he's he's able to do he's able to do those things and so yeah man it's definitely you know I look at his game and I want to you know at the same time I want to learn from Quinch on you know I want to look at this game is like man where where can I get better at as well you know that's the type of player I am I'm always looking to get better man I'm always looking to grow as a player Julian San oh yeah he's gonna be a great but he's gonna be a great quarterback man he's so so accurate and so um he's definitely man I know Coach Dez definitely going to get him right just you know um continue to grow as a leader continue to grow as a player and so he's going he's gonna be really good for high state uh he's uh I know just the quarterback position um I feel like you know the quarterbacks in the past they've they've definitely been vocal and so I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to um ask him Julian San as well it's to be that vocal leader and lead the um and lead the offense and lead the team
shoot man he has he has a build like JK Dobbins and um I kind of see them you know similar similarities in their game as well and I know JK Dobbins he was a great running back um I feel like he's not talked about his none um a lot but man his career here you watch his highlights is is great I remember um before I recruit before I committed here I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights like every every um one of his years here like four or five times and so man he was such a great back and um I feel like you know um when I see JK Dobbins when I see um James people I see similarities to both of their games I feel like they play the same and so appreciate you all
so all I got coming in last round new year also I just attacked every day really the same way it's taking advantage very well physically how different are you weight wise body wise on that from the year ago um I think I got a lot bigger I'm like 240 you know like 244 right now last year I played it like 236 to 37 what does it feel like a 244 or a belt you feel like an almost a different machine out there yeah like what does it what does it feel like to be running around out there like you are but with more more back I just feel like I'm like like like like more downhill like stronger like I'm taking over blocks better it's bigger yeah is it daunting uh maybe that's not the correct term but to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year and you played quite a bit last year instead what do you have to get straight in your head about being on the field that much more this is gotta get ready to just play 30 more snaps so
but are you are you how would you describe how much you're looking forward to it from an 8 stand yeah I'm looking forward to it I'm ready for it my I'm ready for it the text is opener it's a rematch and so to say but it's not really two different teams compared to the last time y'all played and stuff but how does that enhance this camp for you and this team getting ready for the opener with that magnitude yeah with the opener like that we've been um with the emphasizing in a lot we know we got coming so we know we got to do we've prepared for it I already just probably ready I think Riley ready to play right now he he advanced freshman like he ended he in the book he stood in like he advanced and his measurements crazy like he saw like the saw lines so said you're ready what was that process like during last season could you feel yourself becoming more and more ready yeah because that's pretty much what my role was just whenever I was needed I had to step up so I feel like that's what built me into me being able to say I'm ready for
this year when you say ready is it more a physical thing is it a mental thing when I say ready I think it's pretty much like everything physically mentally most of me I think I'm there a different is that I still want one time how different is that responsibility uh it's a way bigger responsibility with me having to step up this year but I kind of go about it the same way like last year I was attention over everything I did I feel like this year it's gonna be the same thing it's probably a little bit more it won't work I say describe like now I say like when you think of me you would think of like a like a bully like a
silver bullet I don't really a bully I'm always on the ball that's how I like to play and think no I ain't ain't gotta be my nickname but oh yeah yeah um think it fit me because I don't know I just like the defense I feel like we got like you say we got a lot of freedom and we moving around a lot a lot of the terms is like no I don't know I don't really not answer that I don't even know if I say that because there's a lot of thinking going on but it's like I just like it's deep I like how to put it deep because I like what you got going on now I want to say that I was kind of like happy for you
that's my dog I'm gonna say yeah kind of missing a little bit but yeah I'm happy for you all right well don't thank you go ahead one last but coach days talked a lot about the guys who played some last year but maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for that wasn't maybe your national championship you guys will win your own yeah how much do you feel that as a guy who certainly contributed last year but will be in this bigger role and along with some of your your classmates yeah I do feel like um yeah I do feel like I did win a nattie last year but like you said my role wasn't same as how's my beat is here so yeah I definitely want to want to go get another one experienced that like feeling maybe on the field a lot more place so you need to offense compared to NFL especially with the way he uses receivers how do you anticipate your role changing it how do you view the offense from a receiver perspective specifically yeah um I mean I think he likes to really push the ball down the field um he likes to be balanced he likes to uh give different looks to a difference you know we're going to not to try to get too much
into it but you know we're going to use some motion move some guys around and things of that nature I think for myself I feel comfortable playing any of the positions that is that is asked whether it's the slot the outside positions and um unique part about our offense is I don't think necessarily you play the X or the Z because the pit on the formation of the hash you can be the opposite you could you could be the X but then you're to the field now you're the Z so you got to really learn the entire concept and know where you're out in the field which I think makes everybody smarter players because you don't pigeonhole yourself I just play X you know I'm only know this position like you get in two minutes you're the Z now you got to know what to do you may have the clear outrout or you may have the backside dig like you got to know what you're doing so I think he doesn't just say like we're going to do this offense he's really trying to create an offense that fits our personnel really well that that field boundary thing yeah that's a thing in college but it seems like it's more unique to clip is that is that something you're used to seeing another offense has it been in yeah definitely I mean I think if if I'm on the left hash like technically I'm
I'm the X you know I'm in the boundary but if we're on the right hash I'm still on the left side I'm really the Z in the concept because I'm to the field I'm to the strength of the tight end so um I've been in offenses like it's similar like that before and um you know I just think he he one thing I think that's really stood out as the compliments of our routes that we have so far um I feel like we have a chance to really run similar stems but there's different routes off those stems and things like that which I think for receiver like myself who uh you get you know a really good look at DBs and they study your film they study your splits like having routes that look the same but break off at different different angles is extremely important because it feels like you have some versatility in your bag to go out with versus like you got this hitch again your backside like that's all you got you know what I mean so um yeah he's just been a really good player's person to work with and he's been really communicative with the leaders and how we want this offense to look like and some of the ideas that we may have as well so it's it's been a really
uh cool transition you talk about the transitions you've nerd offense in three years probably your fourth and six years yeah how do you not kind of build up some barriers yeah man I got to do this again right um I think you know human nature is is always um a factor in whatever you do in life but I think I try to make a conscious choice of coming in with a new year mentality each and every year and I think it's easy because we've had so many changes and um it's been great working with Marcus and Jaden and Jeff and Sam all of everybody like it's it's been great with working with all the quarterbacks and um I just have a mentality and not really being complacent like I try to really focus on the things that I I can come back better at this year and I've been working my my butt off to do that so um I think the easy thing and when I was younger you're like dang like you just want that consistency you know I mean like you want that um something you could depend on but like life isn't
life isn't always like that so um I've been reinvigorated because of just the energy that DQ brings in to our building each and every day and and the coaches as well like it's fun competing you know what I mean and sometimes I could get lost in the grind but um I think the reason why you make it here at this level is because you you fall in love with the competition of it and I think the competition breathes the success because um that is really where you the iron truly sharpeners iron so you know other guys are going to make plays but you get excited to go in there and and know that um the next day we're going to go right back after the defense so um for myself I'm just looking forward to continue to grow with the quarterbacks that we have um I'm in year six now which is extreme blessing and um leader one of the leaders in our room and I just try to take the bull by the horns with that and so uh that's really been my focus and uh you know I'm excited for another year so us it's looked like you're being more vocal on the sideline to help young guys
exactly something you decided this offseason or uh I think that's uh been a part of my maturation process as a leader um I've always seen myself as somebody that was a uh a leader by example um but from coaches and other teammates I've had over the years um guys like to hear what I have to say for whatever reason sometimes you know and I think the biggest thing where I've tried to figure out where I fit in with my vocal leadership is I never wanted to be like a dictator you know I mean I never wanted to tell guys what to do or or be a yellow or things like that like when I say something I wanted to have power I wanted to have meaning and I hope you know the guys would feel the same way if they were to ask them that question um because I want to see all these guys when man like it's it's hard to make it in this league and stay in a career and so anywhere I could help the receivers the DBs I'm talking to some alignment Johnny who's who's rehabbing his foot you know I mean like everybody has a role and everybody has a different story and path and so if I could share what I've been through my testimony to help them or uh do things that kind of slow down the process
I'm gonna try to do that because um we need everybody from the rookies to the 10 year vets to to make this thing work so um more so I try to speak to what I what I know and and really those honest conversations that I try to have with guys what they know I'm coming from a good place and I think I'm not the type of guy where I'm just going to talk in at them like if they see something like I could take a coaching point from Luke McCaffrey I could take a coaching point from day on me from Jahan from uh Marcus from anybody you know like I think that's what makes you a great player when you can really uh be coachable from anybody and and not take it from a personal standpoint hi how are you doing good um going back to what you were saying about Cliff and how was he as a teacher in teaching all this yeah I mean I think he does a really great job of making things simple first and foremost he doesn't over coach and I think that's the trust that he has in our group and his and his coaches our position coaches to um fill in the details so we'll have an install
meeting and um it'll be a good amount of time but then our position coaches will have time and we'll make it specific to that position and so um then we'll come in and have a walkthrough um and then after that we'll have another walkthrough and so I don't think there's been a time where I've come out here and I'm kind of worried about what I got you know what I mean and when you get into certain offices there could be so many details where you could be overwhelmed and I think then it it forces it kind of separates guys in a sense that like one guy may study more than another guy but when you have these these sessions that we have where we're having an installs in the morning we're having two walkthroughs and then we're coming on the field and doing it like I think you notice a lot of guys are playing a lot faster and more confident because he's keeping it simple but also he's very particular in in what he's expecting but it's not a lot so um there's not a pressure of to get it right but at the same time um you know it's expected of you and and you know you're going to have the tools given to you to be successful out there on the field. And this offseason just the totality of change from front office players coaches the turf field
I mean what what has that been like for you just to see what's going on? It's been fun um you know I think from uh Mr. Harrison the entire ownership group down to uh Adam Peters down to DQ down to Jada who we drafted and bringing in Marcus and Jeff and all those guys and down to leaders we have on our team I think it was extremely specific on the way they tried to build this thing going into this year um first we're having the right people bringing in leaders bringing in guys who love to compete. First thing that DQ said when he came here was and his first meeting like if you love to compete this is going to be the place for you and I love it you know I mean I love bags and and going at it with the DBs every day like the little mundane stuff can seem a little boring but that's I think that was the the where you make the gains during the offseason where you're really focused on I'm hey like I'mma I'mma give all I got for this day and I'mma get better and then I'mma I'mma learn from the film and come back tomorrow and ready to do it again and he also understands like the the benefits of having breaks like he's giving us breaks we've had
you know weeks off here and there the week and compose ourselves but then come back and give it all we got you know what I mean and when you got a coach that understands the physicality of an entire season where you guys do need breaks by the same time we're going to get after it uh it makes it fun as a leader because you can take that to your room and be like yo we got these we got this week you know I mean that it's extremely important but you know we have this little break coming up um where you're gonna get your your mind and your body and your soul right so um coming into this season I'm I'm really optimistic of what we can be this year and I think it started with the foundation that uh the ownership group and the entire staff has built and now it's on myself as a leader to continue to hone that in into the locker room but I think it's great because we have so many great leaders from all across the league uh who have won and hey we got Bobby Wagner in there you know I mean I asked a hall of fame or so like you know being able to have kind of guys like that that you can lean on that can sometimes take over that leadership role where it doesn't fall on one person I think it's uh uh extremely refreshing and knowing that everybody's on the same
page and the message is the same um allows you to go out there with confidence and always expect to w terry you seem to spend many of your off seasons learning about things beyond football hobbies what have you did you do any of this offseason so far it's hobbies or increase your knowledge of this the world around you uh it's a good question um play a lot of golf uh that day just keeps my competitive juices flowing um uh planning the wedding that's going well and uh man I've just been grinding like honestly you know I mean I've been hungry uh this all season like uh I started working out you know pretty early and uh you start to see guys like coming back and it's just fun to like to be here and compete and feel like everybody's on the same page you know what I mean like and so for me I'm gonna grind every offseason but just this one just feels like it's the start of something you know new and special and the foundation of is extremely important
to be a part of that to have a hand in that um you know it's it's an honor you know and I put a lot of expectation on myself to come out here and and be the guy that I know I'm capable of and also like taking the next step and uh being somebody that our quarterbacks that can trust and and believe in so um this offseason was pretty simple for me um it was just really about you know working and and and grinding and getting better he talked about jaden before and so far I know we haven't seen everything but in terms of his his arm strength the throws he's making anything surprising so far about the types of his ability in that regard definitely uh I think after the second or third crosser that he threw I started telling receivers like hey you gotta get your head around you know I mean because again each quarterback throws the ball differently and sees the field differently so sometimes on crossers a lot of quarterbacks may like to see you cross the ball and get into that open zone over there if it's man flattened off they like to see you get open for him he has a really good anticipation over the middle of the field where he can make those throws and give you
a chance to catch and run and uh he he's really accountable too like we had to play today where he felt like he missed me and you know it's not a big deal at all you know I mean him and I could talk through those things and there's been a play that I've talked to him about I could do a better job but again like that open that open form of communication from a rookie I think is is very rare and I think it speaks to the confidence he knows who he is but he's also not afraid to say when he's wrong and he knows he needs room to improve but his touch on the D ball is amazing um you know I love getting extra reps with practice after practice with him we're just catching the top end of a D ball as big for me you know I mean I get to track the ball over my shoulder and as big for him to be able to uh get used to dropping the ball in the bucket but he just naturally has an ability to throw the ball he sees the windows really well and now uh he's just you know continue to get adjusted to the speed in the past rush I think he's uh these reps that he's getting are unbelievable during 11 on 11 because he's getting to feel pain and all in and DA and Cleveland Farrow like we got some
dogs up there who are gonna come after him you know what I mean and we got some great guys up front who are gonna protect them and so these reps I feel like are even better than just seven on seven seven on seven I think he could do in the sleep to be fair like he throws the ball really well but when you get this 11 on 11 two-minute drill you're putting them in game like situations and I'm looking at him in his eye I'm like we play a real ball now like we we we playing you know I mean and uh you just see no no uh anxiousness in his game and his demeanor which is extremely exciting and and then you know he's extremely lighthearted and he's always smiling so he's joking with lime and d-line he's just cool with everybody and like I said like for a rookie quarterback to come in like that where guys are gravitating to him and he's not afraid to be who he is uh that's dope I think he has a bright future for himself the tough losses the tough seasons can weigh on a player sure you're entering the prime of your career J.A. kind of mentioned it last year all he cares about is winning he wants to win now is there a sense of urgency you obviously always want to win yeah
knowing that you know you're you're getting to the prime your career like you want to win now yeah I think that's a fair question I think um you know you start to evaluate when you I'm in year six and you know it's how fast it goes and um I try not to put the cart before the horse we're looking too far ahead by at the same time uh you do want to win you want to be a part of a winning culture and have a chance to win the Super Bowl and in the playoffs and all those things like that's why we we do this uh personally and uh I'm just excited with being a part of a organization in a environment where now like everybody's on the same page in the in the in the message is uniform and it speaks from the top down and uh it reflects the guys that they're bringing in you know all the guys that they brought in are guys who are hungry who are competitors who uh not only fighting for spots but are going to help us win games and when you're around an environment like that like that that makes you excited makes you hopeful and um you know you don't know how it's going to turn out until we start playing games but um the foundation is extremely important and I think this
offseason we've really done a great job of building that they have and then when a coach queen guy here building with this team so I feel like we're going to be going into this offseason really um knowing we all got to do individually to become ready for camp but the met uh the message is clear to come back to camp ready to compete and uh and and be ready to win thanks Derek appreciate you guys playing as much so I just wanted to get like more experience under my belt so I can know bring younger guys with me because I've been to a lot of those younger guys we're seeing we all forgot about it because he was hurt and now he's running you know almost a second man up behind you and Ty what have you seen you remember what you're doing? uh what was the workhorse he
he goes stay quiet he gonna work hard and that's all I love about it he focuses he don't really talk much he's going to get the job done do a job right really has any mistakes what would be a successful season uh the national championship I'm reading when all the games we don't want to lose anything uh we got a mindset that we can't be beat and we just got to go show it uh it's definitely a difference everyone working harder um we noticed our last run like we most of us don't have any years after this so we got to go go bigger go home and we not try to go home finished big we know what you guys think of Michigan but when you look at what they did they won the national championship and you guys took them down to the final minute right you know what I mean I mean you you were right there something goes a little different you
guys could have been one that came against them does that tell you anything about like that hey you guys want to win a national championship but you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the national championship last year like you're that close this is how I'm saying uh we just like work harder that's that's kind of coach makes uh saying you know nobody cares just work harder like those you know we won't play Georgia it's the same thing yeah last last play you know they went on the win in 90 so we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season I think we'll be fine how frustrating is that you're that close against the last two national title? uh of course as you know it's frustrating but you can't change the outcome you can't really dwell on it you just got to you know come back and work harder do things better than you did last year and hopefully the outcome will change. Is that as you get older you kind of learn I thought I was working hard and then you always find out there's a little more you could have been doing? Yeah definitely I mean that's how that's what growing up is basically in college and I thought freshman year I was working as hard as I could but now I look back at it I really wasn't working
hard at all compared to what I'm doing now so just to learn anything. 80 85 I mean I can it's all on me I just I think it's a little higher I was just trying to be funny but I mean it's all on me I just got to run harder in shape. I think I think I definitely can last I was just you know we got to get the young guys to come along with us we can't play 50 snaps of game that's just too much on our bodies uh just everybody like online deline we got to get those younger guys to play you know get that pieces on the deline and online and everywhere else so we can last that long run. Speaking of life plan I'm
a snap. Did you like playing that mini snap again last year because I don't know if any of us were expected to be by that next time. Yeah I did unless we were like winning by like a line. I thought like there are no mom easy not gonna sit down or something but we're playing them big games like you know in order to end to or north those kind of games of course I want to be because I know I can contribute and I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I can get the job done. What stands out about Kaden McDonald is he got that you guys in a second here. Oh yeah definitely K-Mac is a K-Mac's animal y'all you haven't really seen it yet but in practice he shows all the time he's just he's growing right now he has a work ethic he just has to get you know in the playbook and things like that. You guys are about the exact same size. Listen you're both listening six three you're three 27 he's three 26. Yeah he's very often. I kind of look at him like my my junior but you know K-Mac he's gonna be a great player he's just got to develop more in getting the playbook. So really a lot on you older guy there's that large group of young guys and then there's the seniors in the back is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys along as well. Yeah definitely
we got to be leaders like I said we got to have them play this year we can't just play all the snaps they got to get in there and get some work and we got to get them right during the all season so they can play and not just play they want to like contribute like make plays tackle success so yeah they're definitely some big dudes and they all work hard I'm really seeing much it's only a day two when I'm passing on but throughout the workouts they've been working hard you know they they're determined I have to say that and it looks like they're ready to work with me you have big athletic defensive tactics who can eat up space but also move you know right through this that is that environment maybe for a great defense to have guys like you that have some fault but also a great team I think that is definitely I think if you look at the last
couple of national championship winners are like team of North they didn't know they got two good detacled two athletic detacters look at Georgia two athletic detacters so I think that's definitely neat if you want to go on that big run and beat those big teams if you think about this they're going to find why the defense was actually like what's Georgia's Jordan Davis and Jeff Carter let's miss again it's Chris Jenkins couple more questions what is fun and like how I mean you understand this was your play it but I feel like some time I don't know are people realizing how important defense tackles are a little bit more than they used to I think so I think they're starting to develop to develop more and more of these like freakish detacters yeah like in the combine just now you see in like those guys they're moving forward to 478 things like that so we'll see and when you think about this freakish how do you think you fit into that old of that kind of player you watch that and say yeah that's me yeah definitely I think I'm top-notch when it comes to detacles but I don't want to you know
get a big head but you know watch it come on I watch it do the drills I have Tate's here you're like you're looking my my film so I think I'm up there with all this I think you know do you become like an artist who comes to batting up passes the figure wags have your things I mean you're going to spring practice you're not doing that much a 11-11 I don't know how to do that stuff do you have like a goal one mind I don't I don't remember how many I mean as many as I can have I think I have more than that but I think they're counseling I think they're counseling of them and it's some of them where I like just listed so but I think we work on drills matching the hand I think that's uh goes big and uh what we do is a D line you know just affecting the quarterback is anywhere you can it's just great for the defense you know just that little thing covering his eye you know he might throw it a little bit to the left to our player so so it's something that you really really have to work on you and what you do you know that's one of the things that you can maybe work on
the most you can bring your time here because there are a few guys that I've seen like oh that passes you guys we don't have to ask for this kind of kind of expected for the school I think I just have like a like a eye for the ball counter I kind of just look at the quarterback and just I see him like load up I just try to get in his ways and sometimes he just throws it to me I mean they get frustrated by you know we're team you know we're just getting better watch a lot a lot of different backs man they just learn to grow for them I don't really have a top three but I'll give you I'll give you one I would say say quan Gibbs and I like McCaffrey auto he was injured this year I like McCaffrey best back in this draft I'll lead that up the y'all that's y'all that's y'all decision
playing well Howard when I'm going to remember most we're a Howard man he's just such a great lead such a great leader man it's just like in moments where you know usually a lot of players they fold man he was just always calm and relaxed man he just the leader that he was man that's one thing I'm gonna remember about him yeah he's shoot he's gonna be really good man he's um coastal lock I think he got the transfer in as well from West Virginia just that one two punch with them both as well they're gonna be really good backs and so James people's man he's smart the way that he goes about his business man he's mature and so man he's growing you know just as a person in as a player and so man yeah definitely Ohio State you know that running back room is in great hands yeah coach coach hard line man he's full of energy man and he's creative as well you know I'm just learning from him as well you know I'm trying to run more
outside the backfield was being able to learn from coach hard line and so he's definitely creative at what he's he does and he brings a lot of energy to the team as well and so I think they'll do really good just intensity man then since he got the playoffs um every game and it's like the intensity got you know higher and higher and so you know being able I know in the lead it's the same thing even if it's not the playoffs just every every game and intensity it keeps getting higher and higher so yeah you just I know you got to bring it you know each and every day and come in and work just like Ohio State you know I definitely feel like Ohio State they definitely do a good job of preparing us for that you know I just remember even before going through this process I'll I'll talk to a lot of players um before then and they told me a lot of just about how much Ohio State prepared them you know for the NFL and so yeah yeah yeah I know I took a couple days off after the um national championship and then
shoot right after that I'm right in right in sample Florida and I'm right to it and so um yeah I think while I trained I trained at your birth performance I think it's called the house of athlete or the compound now they did they did a good job man they're just bringing us in and the the way they went about training us man they were they did a really good job the bucking nearest know what I haven't temple a temple nice this is nice this is a nice city man really nice uh the 40 to broad and avert you yeah yeah no man uh it's really all about technique and then it's about mine said as well and so um I say you know it's for the love of my brother it's for the love of will highway it's for the love of the receivers who I got on the perimeter just making sure you know um first of all my quarterback doesn't get sacked um and I I told will I think it was before the first
game I was like I got your brother it's uh I said man I'm not gonna let you get hit you know um and so I don't know if I don't know if I gave up a sack I'm not sure that um but I know if I did I haven't given up too many and so man it's for the love of my brother's though man making sure the ball get in their hands you know the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed in my game uh you can't really work on this you know in all season I feel like it's more so you know you got to put the pads on you got to go through some inside run you know maybe uh it's really just continuing to run through tackles and so that's I feel like that's one of the areas in my game you know I want to continue to get better I feel like I did a good job of that my senior year and so I just want to continue to build on that yes I did yes I did uh I did meet with um new Orleans as well um I never got that comparison actually um I know
I have a command sure yeah man I have a command great great back man um just what he does and those 101 matchups he's dangerous man and he's so smooth he's so smooth as well I'm not going to be like he's smooth yeah um inside zone from stack being able to hit that thing downhill and I'll say the next one is probably just an option route out of the backfield you know and man and man coverage you're getting on that linebacker and so yeah I say the man the biggest thing is the way that he carries himself man in the way that man um he approaches the game he comes in with the mindset you know he's going to work every single week you know every practice you know he's working hard you know um even shoot I don't know every good I think he had every game was a good game for him man and so but still man he always
has the mentality the mindset that you know he's going to come in each and every day he's going to continue to work and get better man and so he's definitely man he's going to be a special player man he really is man man a lot of ups and downs man it's just how you respond to adversity and I feel like that's something that God has definitely helped me to do better is this um and I have something to lean on now you know I remember before I met him you know going through those adversity I had nothing to run to you know you can run to people but they still can't it's not too much they can't truly help you you know I feel like you know I feel like the only person that can truly help you is your relationship with Jesus Christ and so being able to lean on him you know he gives you in those moments where it's tough you know where it's slow and um when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about um he gives you he gives you that peace and comfort you know um even in those moments man where it's so hard that you can't you can't explain it's like man I'm going through this but like how am I still
feel with this internal joy you know how do I have so much peace in this situation and so that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you and so so um man eight those guys have such a great mentality man um I just really love their mentality especially um Q as well you know I talked about will Howard his leadership but Quenchon mentality man um that boy just yeah that boy just gifted you know you see you know sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like you know he should have a negative five yards and as soon as you know it you know he that running through somebody stiff arm and somebody and shoot it's a game of 10 it's uh you some of the things he does he just realizes to be different to guys uh um shoot I think yeah man I think it's just like he's just gifted man to be honest he's just gifted you know he's
he's a big back you know he's strong and so um you know he's he's able to do he's able to do those things and so um yeah man it's definitely you know I look at his game and I want to you know at the same time I want to learn from Quenchon you know I want to look at this game is like man where where can I get better at as well you know that's the type of player I am I'm always looking to get better man I'm always looking to grow as a player Julian San oh yeah he's gonna be a great but he's gonna be a great quarterback man he's so so accurate and so um he's definitely man I know Coach Dez definitely going to get him right just you know um continue to grow as a leader continue to grow as a player and so he's going he's gonna be really good for high state uh he's that I know just the quarterback position um I feel like you know the quarterbacks in the past they've they've definitely been vocal and so I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to um ask Julian San as well it's to be that vocal leader and lead the um and lead to offense and lead to steam shoot man he has he has a build like JK Dobbins and um I kind of see them you know similar
similarities in their game as well and I know JK Dobbins he was a great running back um I feel like he's not talked about his none um a lot but man his career here you watch his highlights is is great I remember um before I recruit before I committed here I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights like every every um one of his years here like four or five times and so man he was such a great back and um I feel like you know um when I see JK Dobbins when I see um James people I see similarities to both of their games I feel like they play the same and so appreciate
you all I got coming in last round new world so I just tacked Eric Dave really the same way it's taking advantage very well physically how different are you weight wise body wise on that from the yearbook um I think I got a lot bigger I'm like 240 you know like 244 right now last year I played it like 236 to 37 what does it feel like 244 or about you feel like almost a different machine out there yeah what's it what does it feel like to be running around out there like you are but with more more bad I just feel like I'm like like like like more downhill like stronger like I'm taking all the bloods better it's a big no is it daunting uh maybe that's not the correct term but to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year and you played quite a bit last year and stuff but what do you have to get straight in your head about being on the field that much more this is gotta get ready to just play 30 more snaps so but are you are you how would you describe
how much you're looking forward to it from an eight day point yeah I'm looking forward to it I'm ready for it I'm ready for it I'm ready for it it's open it's a rematch so to say but it's not really two different teams compared to one time y'all played and stuff but how is that enhanced this camp for you and this team getting ready for the where an opener of that magnitude yeah with an opener like that we've been um we've been emphasizing it a lot we know we got coming so we know we got to do we're prepared for it all right it is probably worth it I think Riley ready to play right now he he advanced freshman like he ended up hitting the book he stood in like he advanced and his measurable is crazy like he saw like the saw line too or like you said you're ready right you know you're ready what was that process like during last season could you feel yourself becoming more and more ready so whatever the team needed for you yeah because that's pretty much what my role was just whenever I was needed I had to step up so I feel like that's what built me into me being able to say I'm ready for this year when you say ready is it more a physical thing is it a mental thing when I say ready
I think it's pretty much like everything physically mentally mostly I think I'm there oh ask that one more time oh I feel like it's a uh it's a way bigger responsibility with me having to step up this year but I kind of go about it the same way like last year I was intentional with everything I did I feel like this year it's gonna be the same thing it's probably a little bit more and what word how's anybody worked your watch uh I say I say scrabbing can I say like when you think of me you would think of like a like a bullet like a silver bullet I don't really a bullet I'm always on the ball that's how I like to play and think
no I ain't I ain't got to be my nickname but oh yeah yeah yeah you want a lot of it yeah it's like I've always had a lot of questions like nutritious style and how it's free I mean how does that fit you and what are you doing about bullying and that kind of stuff um think it fit me because I don't know I just like the defense I feel like we got like you say we got a lot of freedom and we moving around a lot a lot of the terms is like no I don't know I don't really not answer that that's okay does it kind of you can go on your instincts a little bit more maybe it's not so thinking of too much I don't even know if I say that because there's a lot of thinking going on but it's like I just like his deep I like country's deep I like what you got going on but what was it sad when you left the room uh now I wanted to much sad I was kind of like happy for you yeah that's what you want no no that's my dog so yeah kind of missing a little bit
but yeah I'm happy for you though don't thank you go ahead one last but coach days talked a lot about the guys who played some last year but maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for that wasn't maybe your national championship you guys will win your own yeah how much do you feel that as a guy who certainly contributed last year but will be in this bigger role and along with some of your classmates yeah I do feel like um yeah I do feel like I did win a nattie last year but like you said my role wasn't same as how's gonna be this year so yeah I definitely want to want to go get another one experienced that like feeling with me be on the field lot more place I said oh Bill thank you very much so I feel like I kind of have a lot of meters on the D line at the D in position so we kind of all kind of just counter-toxic there's been a tough time you should use it over all the time guys playing with them all do you want to be on the field and just start getting to my table now and try to just be like so you need to do this guys how's that transition going? um it's good competitive and we love it we all competitive people we all love to fish each other and I feel like the springing the best
side of all is we feel like we all just kind of bouncing off each other and see what one person does and we kind of build it into our actual box and we all kind of just kind of build one great you're gonna go unless you're and you got to get the shot at full back and get there coach you that idea and two coach them I mean how did that come about? because you're a jack sawyer it's not me okay get the touchdown um so I definitely did it in high school I was full back and a little bit of tidying so I feel like it kind of saw what I could do there in Coach Wilson honestly you left watching it too before you left and uh feel like you playing that seed in coach day's head and uh coach day kind of just went for it and uh tried to do the best I could to do it is that continuing now? I mean uh do anything in the spring? new playbook I did not know you uh we've got that far so yeah good day, how tough is that for you? you're looking back on? um I like to think myself as a football player I can really play any position on the field you need me to just give me a weaker two to learn it and kind of perfect it and uh try to do my best for you.
Kid Jack do the same thing. oh yeah. don't like what you're saying. Graphically that's why. Kid is talking to Coach Johnson on Tuesday about some of the conversations and sort of saw you and got out to have some conversations after JT and Jack decided to come back just got to win into those really respected and and how did that help you maybe get the right mindset I guess many of you have spoken. um definitely kind of seeing it all the way through. I feel like uh people kind of just see what happened and they don't know everything that goes into it how long the season is now what you got to do to prepare for and what happened and all that time from here to to that so uh I feel like we definitely just coached in me kind of connected and we kind of just talks man oh man and uh he kind of just straight to me and I feel like we kind of both are going on and we know we're making it together. We make each other better every day and we got the four best Dn's five best Dn's honestly and then coach football and we're going to be one of the best D-rimes and coach football. I think you feel like a better player today at any work in the senior year. I don't know I feel like I've taken big steps in my roles of just being responsible and
being more of a leader and uh kind of stepping up and taking a step to kind of get out there more on the team and kind of bring people in and uh feel like we're kind of helping out more. I don't even read around the process of a TKFC. Does it sound? I mean it sounds bizarre but I mean the season goes by so fast already so when you're kind of like week ten and you're like wow it's already week ten so now it's kind of gives you more time to kind of enjoy it and kind of savor it because you've got a lot of fun and you feel like I'm fresh with those first crazy. But you don't want to spend all your power in the first uh first month of the year right now. Oh yeah. Is that not pace yourself that good? I mean there's a mindset that I didn't know the season. Yeah definitely definitely going to have that the mental stability to handle all those weeks and all those practices. How much has Larry talked to you guys around the group? Last question right here. 2016-2017 four NFL two-punch of games all in the same organization. How much does he talk to that guy? I mean he doesn't have to talk about it. We know about it. We see it in every day. We watch the film. We see them all working together. We know what it could be. We know what we could become.
So we know we we're right at the same, we're at the right place at the right time and God wanted us to be here and he knew we wanted us all to come together and kind of play together and be able to bounce off and just perfect our craft together and I feel like we all are just great individuals and we come together at something special. We plan as much so I just wanted to get like more experience under my belt so I can know bring younger guys with me because I've been through a lot of it. One of those younger guys we're seeing it like it's the first time it's hurt all of your life. What have you seen from Will? Because I don't know if I should have real forgot about him because he was hurt. Now how he's running, you know, almost a second man out of the eye. What have you seen in the interviews? Will is a workhorse. He goes stay quiet. He goes work hard and that's all I love about him. He focuses, he don't really talk much. He's just going to get the job done, do a job right. He rarely has any mistakes. What would be a successful season? A national championship? A ring. When all the games we don't want to lose anything.
We got a mindset that we can't be beat and we just got to go show it. That mindset different. It seems like you guys expect a national championship every year. This year even more so we get all come back for this. As if all decided like enough is enough. Does that keep you feeling different or is it not really any different? It's just the same work. It's definitely a difference. Everyone working harder. We noticed our last run. Most of us don't have any years after this. So we got to go bigger, go home then. We're not trying to go home. It's finished big. We know what you guys think of Michigan. But when you look at what they did, they won the national championship and you guys took them down to the final minute. You know what I mean? You were right there. Something goes a little different. You guys could have won that game against them. Does that tell you anything about like that? Hey, you guys want to win a national championship. But you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the national championship last year. Like you're that close. As I'm saying, we just work harder. That's kind of a coach makes a saying.
Nobody cares is work harder. Like those won't play Georgia. It's the same thing. Last play, they went on the win in the 90s. So we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season. I think we'll be fine. How frustrating is that? You're that close against the last two national titles. Of course it's frustrating. But you can't change the outcome. You can't really dwell on it. You just got to come back and work harder. Do things better than you did last year. And hopefully the outcome will change. Is that as you get older, you kind of learn. I thought that was working harder than you always find out there's a little more in the end. Yeah, definitely. I mean, that's what growing up is basically in college. I thought, first of all, I was working as hard as I could. But now I look back at it. I really wasn't working hard at all compared to what I'm doing now. So just to learn anything. But to stand in as a 16, then the answer to what do you need it to be to be your best? Uh, 80, 85. I mean, I can, it's all on me. I think it's a little higher.
I was just trying to be funny. But I mean, that's all on me. I just got to run harder. Get the shape. It's going to be the idea of a potential to 16 or 17 or 17. I mean, I have about that idea that making nervous about can you last that long? Do you have worries? I think I definitely can last. I was just, you know, we got to get the young guys to come along with us. We can't play 50 snaps again. That's just too much on our bodies. Just everybody. Like, online, D-Line. We got to get those younger guys to play, you know, get that pieces on the D-Line and the online and everywhere else. So we can last that long. Speaking of that, I'm not going to snap. If you like playing that knee snap again last year because I don't know. I don't know if any of us will really expect to be playing that next. Ah, yeah, I did. Unless we were like winning by like a line. Uh, I thought like, there are no moments you know I can go sit down or something. But we're playing them big games like, you know, Notre Dame too, and those kind of games. Of course I want to be because I know I can contribute.
And I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I can get the job done. What stands out about Kaden McDonald is he got a team that you guys have a second. Oh yeah, definitely. K-Mac is a K-Mac's animal. Y'all, you haven't really seen it yet, but in practice he shows it all the time. He's just, he's growing right now. He has the work ethic. He just has to get, you know, in the playbook and things like that. You guys are about the exact same size. It's just, you're both listening to six three, you're three twenty seven, he's three twenty six. Yeah, he's, I kind of look at him like my junior, but, you know, K-Mac, he's going to be a great player. He's got to develop more and get into playbook. So really a lot on you older guys, there's that large group of young guys and then there's these seniors in the back. Is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys along as well? Yeah, definitely. We got to be leaders. Um, like I say, we got to have them play this year. We can't just play all the snaps. They got to get in there and get some work. And we got to get them right during the all season. So they can play and not just play. They want to like contribute like make plays tackle sex.
Yeah, they're definitely some big dudes. Um, and they all work hard. I'm really seeing much of some day too when I'm passing on, but throughout the workouts, they've been working hard, you know, they're determined to. I'd say that. And it looks like they're ready to work with me. How important this note feels like. There's a lot of great defenses that you have big athletic defensive tactics. You can eat up space, but also move, you know, right? It is that is that environment maybe for great defense to have guys like you that have some fault, but also a great feature. I think that is definitely I think if you look at the last couple of national champions in winter's like see my North, they didn't know they got two good, uh, detaco two athletic detacles. Look at Georgia two athletic detacles. So I think that's definitely need if you want to go on that big run and beat those big teams. If you think about this, they're going to fight by the defense attack. What's Jordan, Jordan Davis and James Carter and what's Michigan? It's Chris Jenkins.
Couple more questions. You understand. It's just you play it, but I feel like some time I don't know are people realizing how important defense tackles are a little bit more than they used to. I think so. I think they're starting to develop to develop more and more of these like freaky state tackles. Yeah. Like in the combine, just now you see in like those guys, they're moving four to four seven eights and things like that. So we'll see. And when you think it when you think about those freaky stuff, how do you think you fit into that all of that kind of player? We watched that and say, yeah, that's me. Yeah, definitely. I think I'm top notch when it comes to detacles, but I don't want to you know get a big head, but you know, watch it come on. I watch it do the drills. I have tape here. You're like, you're like, my film. So I think I'm up there with all those times. Tyler, can you become like a artist who comes to bad young passes? Think of ways. I mean, you're going to bring practice. You're not doing as much a weapon. I don't want to. I don't know.
Do you have like a gold one? I don't remember how many that last year, like you have gold. I'm not scared. How many do you want to have? I mean as many as I can have, I think I have more than that. But I think they've counted. I think they've counted some of them and it's some of them where I like just missed it. But I think we work on drills matching the hand. I think that's uh, goes big and uh, what we do is a D line, you know, just affecting the quarter of that is anywhere you can. It's just great for the defense, you know, just that little thing covering his eye, you know, he might throw it a little bit to the left for our players. So, so it's something that you really, really have to work on. You can do that with what you do in the past. It's a theory that's one of the things that you've maybe worked on the most. You can do it in your time here because there are a few guys that I've seen. Like, oh, that past year, it takes a day and we don't have that. It's a strategy. I don't know if they're kind of kind of expected for it. I think I just have like a, like, uh, eye for the ball kind of. I kind of just look at the quarterback and just, I see him like load up. I just try to get in his ways and sometimes he just throws it in his. I'm here at T. If you want to be a high state quarterback, skip, get your back down passes.
I mean, they get frustrated by, you know, we're a team, you know, we're just getting better. I should lot of, a lot of different backs, man. They just learn to grow for them. You got to pick your top three backs. I don't really have a top three, but I'll give you, I'll give you one. I would say, say, Juan Gibbs and I like McCaffrey. Auto, he was injured this year. I like McCaffrey. I appreciate it. Who's the best back in this drive? Best back in this drive. I lead out of the yard. That's y'all, that's y'all decision. Playing with Will Howard, what I'm going to remember most. We're a Howard, man. He's just such a great lead, such a great leader, man. It's just like in moments where, you know, usually a lot of players they fold, man, he was just always calm and relaxed, man. And he just the leader that he was, man, that's one thing I'm going to remember about him.
Yeah, he's, he's going to be really good, man. He's on Coach Luck. I think he got the transfer in as well from West Virginia. Just that one, two punch with them both as well. They're going to be really good backs. And so James people's, man, he's smart. The way that he goes about his business, man, he's mature. And so, man, he's growing, you know, just as a person and as a player. And so, man, yeah, definitely Ohio State, you know, that running back room is in great hands. Yeah, Coach, Coach Hartlum, man, he's full of energy, man. And he's creative as well, you know, I'm just learning from him as well, you know, trying to run more outside the backfield was being able to learn from Coach Hartlum. And so, he's definitely creative at what he does. And he brings a lot of energy to the team as well. And so, I think they'll do really good. Just the intensity, man, the intensity of the playoffs.
Every game, man, it's like the intensity got, you know, higher and higher. And so, you know, being able, I know in the lead, it's the same thing. Even if it's not the playoffs, just every game and the intensity, it keeps getting higher and higher. And so, yeah, you just, I know you got to bring it, you know, each and every day and come in and work. And just like Ohio State, you know, I definitely feel like Ohio State, they definitely do a good job of preparing us for that. You know, I just remember even before going through this process, I'll talk to a lot of players before that. And they told me a lot of just about how much Ohio State prepared them, you know, for the NFL. And so, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I know I took a couple days off after the national championship. And then, shoot, right after that, I'm writing sample Florida and I'm right to it. And so, yeah, I think while I trained, I trained at your morph performance. I think it's called the House of Athlete or the Compound now. They did a good job, man. They're just bringing us in and the way they went about training us, man, they did a really good job.
I mean, have you played in the NBA? The Bucking Niers. No, I haven't. Do you think it's a city in Tampa? Tampa, Tampa, nice. It's a nice city, man. Really nice. The 40 to broad and avert. Yeah. Yeah. No, man. It's really all about technique and then it's about mindset as well. And so, I say, you know, it's for the love of my brother. It's for the love of Will Howard. It's for the love of the receivers who I got on the perimeter. Just making sure, you know, first of all, my quarterback doesn't get sacked. And I told Will, I think it was before the first game. I was like, I got your brother. It's, I said, man, I'm not going to let you get hit, you know. And so, I don't know if I gave up a sack. I'm not sure that. But I know if I did, I haven't given up too many. And so, man, it's for the love of my brother's, though, man, making sure that the ball get in their hands, you know,
the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed. In my game, you can't really work on this, you know, in all season, I feel like it's more so, you know, you got to put the pads on. You got to go through some inside run, you know, maybe. It's really just continuing to run through tackles. And so, that's, I feel like that's one of the areas in my game, you know, I want to continue to get better, right? I feel like I did a good job of that my senior year. And so, I just want to continue to build on that. Yes, I did. Yes, I did. I did meet with New Orleans as well. I never got that comparison. Actually, I know I have a Camera. Sure, yeah, man, I have a Camera. Great, great back, man. Just what he does and those 101 matchups, he's dangerous, man. And he's so smooth. He's so smooth as well. I'm not going to lie, he's smooth.
Yeah. Inside zone from stack, being able to hit that thing downhill. And I say the next one is probably just an option route out of the backfield, you know, and man and man coverage. You're getting on that linebacker and so. You have the perfect question. Yeah, I say the man the biggest thing is the way that he carries himself, man, and the way that man he approaches the game. He comes in with the mindset, you know, he's going to work every single week, you know, every practice, you know, he's working hard, you know, even shoot. I don't know, every good, I think he had a, every game was a good game for him, man. And so, but still, man, he always has the mentality to mindset that, you know, he's going to come in each and every day, he's going to continue to work and get better, man. And so he's definitely man, he's going to be a special player, man. He really is.
Man, a lot of ups and downs, man, it's just how you respond to adversity. And I feel like that's something that God has definitely helped me to do better. Is this, I'm not having something to lean on now. You know, I remember before I met him, you know, going through those adversity, I had nothing to run to, you know, you can run to people, but they still can't, it's not too much, they can't truly help you. You know, I feel like, you know, I feel like the only person that can truly help you is your relationship with Jesus Christ. And so, being able to lean on him, you know, he gives you, in those moments where it's tough, you know, where it's low. And when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about, he gives you that peace and comfort, you know, even in those moments, man, where it's so hard that you can't explain, it's like, man, I'm going through this, but like, how am I still filled with this internal joy? You know, how do I have so much peace in this situation? And so, that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you. And so,
man, those guys have such a great mentality, man. Am I just really love their mentality? Especially Q as well, you know, I talked about Will Howard, his leadership, but Quincham mentality, man, that boy just, yeah, that boy just gifted, you know, you see, you know, sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like, you know, he should have a negative five yards. And then as soon as you know it, you know, he either run it through somebody, step on him somebody, and see if this is a game to 10. And so, shoot, I think, yeah, man, I think it's just like, he's just gifted, man, too, beyond it. He's just gifted, you know, he's a big back, you know, he's strong. And so, you know, he's able to do, he's able to do those things. And so, yeah, man, it's definitely, you know, I look at this game and I want to, you know, at the same time, I want to learn from Quincham, you know, I want to look at this game and it's like, man, where can I get better at as well? You know, that's the type of player I am. I'm always looking to get better, man. I'm always looking to grow as a player.
Julian Sand. Oh, yeah, he's going to be a great, but he's going to be a great quarterback, man. He's so, so accurate. And so, he's definitely, man, I know Coach Dez definitely going to get him right. Just, you know, continuing to grow as a leader, continuing to grow as a player. And so, he's going to be really good for high state. He's, I know just the quarterback position. I feel like, you know, the quarterbacks in the past, they've, they've definitely been vocal. And so, I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to ask Julian Sand as well. It's to be that vocal leader and lead the, and lead the offense and lead the team. Shoot, man, he has, he has a bill like JK Dobbins. And I kind of see them, you know, similar, similarities in their game as well. And I know JK Dobbins, he was a great running back. I feel like he's not talked about his know. I'm a lot, but man, his career here, you watch his highlights is great. I remember before I recruit, before I committed here, I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights, like every, every one of his years here, like four or five times.
And so, man, he was such a great back. And I feel like, you know, when I see JK Dobbins, when I see James people, I see similarities to both of their games. I feel like they play the same. And so, appreciate you all. Yeah, I'll be going.
Well, I got coming in last year. I knew the role. So I just tacked Eric Dave, really the same way. It's taking a very rough. Physically, how different are you? Weight-wise, body-wise, all that from the year. Oh, I think I got a lot bigger. I'm like 240. You know, like 244 right now. Last year, I played it like 236 to 37. What does it feel like at 244? Or maybe I'll be able to feel like an almost a different machine out there? Yeah, like what does it feel like to be running around out there? Like you are with more, more back. I just feel like I'm like, like, like more downhill, like stronger, like I'm taking all the bloods better. It's a big move. Is it daunting? Maybe that's not the correct term. But to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year. And you played quite a bit last year instead of what you have to get straight in your head about being on the field that much more. This is going to get ready to just play 30 more snaps. So. Are you? How would you describe how much you're looking forward to it from an 8-stand point?
Yeah, I'm looking forward to it. I'm ready for it. My I'm ready for it. The Texas opener. It's a rematch. So to speak, but it's not really two different teams compared to the last time we all played. How is that enhanced this camp for you and this team getting ready for the where an opener of that magnitude? Yeah, with an opener like that, we've been emphasizing it a lot. We know we got coming. So we know we got to do. We've been prepared for it. Already this probably worked. I think Riley ready to play right now. He advanced freshman like he in the he in the book. He studied in like he advanced and his measurements crazy. Like he saw like the saw line to him. Orbel, you said you're ready. Right? You know, you're ready. What was that process like during last season? Could you feel yourself becoming more and more ready? So where the team needed to be? Yeah, because that's pretty much what my role was. Whenever I was needed, I had to step up. So I feel like that's what built me into me being able to say I'm ready for this year. When you say ready, is it more a physical thing?
Is it a mental thing? When I say ready, I think it's pretty much like everything physically, mentally, mostly. I think I'm there. Oh, asked the one more time. I feel like it's a way bigger responsibility with me having to step up this year. But I kind of go about it the same way. Like last year, I was intentional with everything I did. I feel like this year is going to be the same thing. It's probably a little bit more. And what work? How's everybody working? Well, I say, describe my game. I say, when you think of me, you would think of like a bully, like a silver bully. Like I'm really a bully.
I'm always on the ball. That's how I like to play and think. No, I ain't got to be my nickname, but. Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah, it's like. Thank you. What are you doing about bullying in that kind of second? Um, think of fit me because. I don't know, I just like the defense. I feel like we got like you said, we got a lot of freedom and we're moving around a lot. A lot of the terms is like, you know, I don't know. I don't really not answer that. That's okay. Does it? You can go on your instincts a little bit more, maybe? And it's not so thinking of too much. I don't even know if I say that because there's a lot of thinking going on, but it's like, I just like his defense. I like how the pressure defense. I like what he got going on. I wanted to my sad. I was kind of like happy for him. Like, yeah, that's what you want.
All right. No, that's my dog. I go. So yeah, kind of missing a little bit. But yeah, I'm happy for him. All right, well, don't thank you. Go ahead one last question. Coach Daze talked a lot about the guys who played some last year, but maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for, you know, that wasn't maybe your national championship. You guys will win your own. Yeah. How much do you feel that is a guy who certainly contributed last year, but will be in this bigger role and a lot of some of your classmates? Yeah, I do feel like, um, yeah, I do feel like I did win a national, but like you said, my role wasn't the same as how it's going to be this year. So yeah, I definitely want to want to go get another one experienced that like feeling maybe on the field, a lot more place. That's it. Oh, Bill, thank you very much. I'm so happy. The championship in New York and, you know, before and everything like that and also need to get your teeth knocked in, you know, first game and you can't have that happen because then you know, really doesn't mean anything. And so just the constant mindset to continually get better is been on the forefront of my mind and forefront of anyone here you can ask.
Yeah. Yeah, I know we, uh, we look at the, uh, the class stats every now and then I can be like, oh man, they're gone. They're gone. No, it's been, um, it's been good. I mean, the guys who are still here have definitely kind of bonded together pretty good. Yeah, I mean, uh, you know, Mark came in the other days like, in that class, 21 best class ever. I'm like, yes, sure. You know, I can't really, I really can't really even, you know, just sitting to that, you know, not much left, but, um, uh, yeah, I mean, to do what we can and do what we can for this team has been really important for all of us. And I think, um, us now realizing where the veterans, you know, like where the old guys now in the group has been, um, kind of strange, at least to begin with, you know, because you go from, all those guys, you know, like Donnie and Josh and those guys and all of sudden, it's Sunday. We have a team meeting after the, um, like the celebration and the shoe and all of the
sudden the next day that we've gone and, you know, it's just very different. So I think us being able to step up as, you know, leaders and as, um, as vets to help bring out, you know, along the team, our units and, um, this program has been really important. What are you doing overall? Two more questions. Just to try. Um, but then you're on this one, but you're first. Luke's out there. Jake has been, but it's so far. He didn't continue. Yeah. No, it could spend doing really well. I mean, I could go and he goes to work. Um, he's extremely athletic, extremely flexible. Um, you know, he's a young kid, obviously. He's a lot of, um, a lot of development, a lot of, he's a little adversity at all of us do. Um, but I think he's going through that right now, but he's been, um, coming out on the better end of it so far and, um, excited to see what he can do because he's very impressive at this young stage. So, what is your overall level of excitement just to be back with the rest of this interior off
the line, but you guys having so much experience back then? Yeah, extremely excited. I mean, um, trying to just build that culture back up again, you know, like what we had last year. Uh, I, we're trying to do a little stuff here and there and I can know I think we're going to Ray race. A barbecue. I think tomorrow. Um, so shout out Ray race. But, um, but yeah, just trying to get that brotherhood back, get that, you know, that oblock spirit back. Uh, sure it's coming soon. Um, hopefully. Um, but, uh, just to kind of get those, uh, not those same faces, but those same kind of mindsets back in our, our group is important right now. And it's, it's been fun to meet new guys from different backgrounds and stuff like that. Um, and try to figure out how to, you know, build that and mend that together. It's been pretty cool. Now that you are one of the most experienced veterans on this team, how much do you feel like you have to be a leader for the students here? Yeah, for sure. I mean, I think that comes, um, I don't, it's, it's obviously, I don't feel like it's natural to anyone to immediately step up and that's something I've been working on every day
and talking to God about. Um, but I obviously understand that and that's something I want to continue to work on. I want to be able to, um, be a guy that people can fall back on and like coach just saying before, like, we're going to have highs and lows, but the great players, the ones we can set our clocks to and I kind of want, that's my goal as to be one of those people that you can do that. Um, and I think for, especially a very new set of eyes, um, in the Woody, um, not only coaches, but players. Um, I think it's very important to kind of keep that steady, um, mindset. And I think for me, learning how to be a leader has been important just to not be too hard on myself, but also not let myself kind of slack off in some departments to try to keep, um, steady. Just your story itself, though, is testament of what it means to like for perseverance and stuff too, though, right? Carson, I mean, you don't have to, I don't have to stand up from somebody to say that, right? I mean, just, what do you, what do you think you've shown more than anything else in their regard? Yeah, I mean, I've been blessed, you know, I've, you know, I've been blessed with a lot of adversity.
I think that's definitely made me better on the back end and, um, you know, coach, so it, Coach, they always talks about it and you don't, you know, great leaders aren't, you know, they can show it, but you know, a lot of people can show it. A lot of people can just talk about it. Um, but to be about it is important. And I think, um, to be enough, went through a lot of that adversity, I went through a lot of that stuff and, um, my testament, you know, has been, um, written in an interesting way. But I think for me to take that next step is really important for not only for this team, but for myself personally. You're, you're, you're a professional. Yeah, uh, he's been doing great. I mean, he came in, um, big, freaking strong. Uh, he's fun to be in the weight room with. Uh, he's, uh, he's kind of quiet. Like that's kind of my first impression on him. But he's actually pretty funny. Dude, he, he and his dad come over and they kind of joke around and so he's been doing a great job. All right. Can you talk? He's been doing a great job, um, for his size, he has like freaky, athletic feet. Like I watched him do the ladders and I, that's a lot of massive overrun on those things, you know, doing a little itch shuffle. But I mean, he's, he was killing it. And so he's been doing a
great job. I can't wait to see how he kind of continues to develop throughout this summer and throughout this fall camp. First thing, somebody asked me, yeah, I heard about that. What it asked to be? Yeah, Piggy's been doing great. I mean, he, um, he stepped up. Piggy, yeah, everyone refers to his piggy. It was his username one time. Nice. Everyone's piggy. But anyway, um, you know, pig's been doing great. He, uh, he's been able to step up and kind of bring around along those younger guys. Um, you know, everyone's kind of trying to figure out their, their new roles. And I think he's been, uh, who may be a lot of things. Big body guy that you catch to buy. You can run between the tacos. Um, his feet are quick. And once you think for a big guy, you got really good feet. We get balanced. So that's what makes him good. That's what I saw. Is that, is that a comment for a bigger back like in the average? For utility? All right. Yeah. I'm probably good. Like, running back. So I'm trying to get back. Uh, well, tight in background. No, I don't know many with that type of background, but when he's high school, we see that they try to play as an H back, uh, really good.
But when you look in the portal for running action, we try to recruit him back. Does it matter to you if you have two different styles of running backs, maybe one guy can do certain things better. One guy can do certain things other or is it, you'll just say the best running back. You can find you. I want to have different styles. Yeah, I want different styles. I'm trying to say the same thing. We're going to take the same thing. We're going to take guys with different skills. Uh, whether they're big guys, small guys, tall scatures, in between the type of runners. Uh, no, I don't want to take the same thing. They're all different, different, different backs. You guys know, Will and Plinchon, we have a lot of them. I'm sure we're red zone scoring for you guys. And, um, is it important to find the back of the badge of size? Is it the CJA has the upper end of it when you're on something? Uh, no, I have my own opinion on the size they're going to come in the red zone. I had Jordan James out of the world. And I, he's my, uh, red zone, uh, running show yards, he's a freshman. He probably waited two, ten or twelve five, which is not very big.
But they ain't got the new again. And some guys you got the most are sticking about his own. And you play with a lot of aggression down here running. And that could be CJA, that could be James or it could be the freshman, Bill Jackson. It's just who has a nose to get in his own. But that's, that's where I'm all over. You don't have to be six, two, two, three. Nah, just because you're being there, I'll make you pop. We need to get, obviously, you know, freshman running back to coming in, about what is there here. But what do you need to see from a freshman to feel comfortable with that place? In the first thing with that on the ball, whether they do that little small detail, take care of the ball. The second thing will be how good they, uh, passports. Because it's the hardest thing for high school backs. Because they're not really during high school. Do you have to understand the passports? But all their falls on him. So, like they said, I'm in the first man here. So, but that's why I need to see first, for everything, just,
I will understand the weaknesses that I can get in there. Do you feel comfortable with, with bow and, and I say, where they're at or at least, you know, where their time lies. Yeah, I think they've been fine. I can say I tell all the young guys, he's a marathon, that was fun. The first thing, the first you've been to arm and spine and specialty. Know your own spine and specialty, then, then you, do you earn the right to be a, a buck out, I'll be. So, get that down and feel so, uh, no, I, I think they're training the right, the first practice. Not, it wasn't merit, something to build off for, I couldn't have stuff to work on. Yeah, yeah. Long day. I've been seeing some of the younger guys in your room develop, think about like, Patrick Houston is coming in this year, seeing him working with you guys. Joshua, making, sounds like you're coming home. I feel like they're definitely picking up quick. I mean, I was in their shoes one time and I had Zach Harrison, Javante, and Tyler Frydell in front of me.
So, I feel like I'm just trying to be kind of one of those peers that they work for me and kind of just give them the steps to get there. And I feel like they're definitely picking up quick and, uh, they're definitely going to be one of the great rushmen. So, we coach Joshua Salki, but, JT and Jack probably have needed a ton of their experience. So, you have some opportunities for me, a lot of, is there a difference in the work going to be getting through Patrick Jamford and Colastable? Um, I feel like all the camps I've definitely got my big coursework and I love that. So, as Coach J4, I love getting more reps because I just like, protecting my craft. So, I mean, some people may not need it, some other people need it, but I mean, I just like to give me reps, I give it to people. What do you think is the speed on that course that I've got? It's a little work on right now. Um, I mean, for me, it's always just kind of getting my, uh, little details perfectly, like my steps, my footing, kind of just affecting my toolbox, is what we call it, my craft, and just trying to be, uh, it's like a win-ever, heavy putt, it's what it's kind of do.
Yeah, um, definitely just getting stronger faster, everything all they've got, but, uh, one of my big things is being leader, and kind of just not trying to look, still look up to Jack and JT, and kind of have my own kind of leadership and be able to, bring people into, so, I feel like, kind of have a lot of leaders on the B-line, and we had to be in position, so we kind of all kind of just bounce off of children, and how is that? There's been a tough challenge for you to go through, so, what about these guys, playing with them, and all of you, right, being on the field, and just trying to get them to the end of the course, and trying to get them to the speed like, so you need to get these guys, how does that transition into? Um, it's been competitive, and we love it. We're all competitive people, we all love to fish together, and that's what we're bringing the best side of all, I feel like we're all just kind of bouncing off each other, and seeing what one person does, and kind of building into our toolbox, and we all kind of just kind of build one great thing. Hey, do you ever go out last year, and you got to get the shot at, uh, with full backing, and, uh, did they approach you with that idea, and two coach's team, and I'll get to them about it, because you're a jackson, all your sloppy.
All right. It gives a touchdown. Uh, so I definitely did it in high school, I was pulled back, and a little bit excited, so I feel like it kind of saw what I could do there, and Coach Wilson, obviously, he loved watching it too, before he left, and, uh, I feel like he planned that seat, and Coach Day's head, and Coach Day kind of just went for it, and tried to do the best I could to do it. Is that continuing now, man? I mean, you know, you need anything to scream? New playbook, I did not know you, I haven't got that far. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, and how tough is that, to say that? Yeah, look at that. Um, I like to think myself as a football player, I can really play any position on the field, you need me to, just give me a week or two to learn it, and kind of perfect it, and try to do my best for you. Kid Jack, you're the same thing. Oh, yeah. Well, don't laugh. Graphically, that's why. Okay, he was talking to Coach Johnson on Tuesday about some of the conversations, and sort of saw you, and got out to have some conversations, after JT and Jack decided to come down, just got to win into those weird perspectives, and how did that help you maybe get the right mindset I guess when I'm in the squad? Um, definitely kind of seeing it all the way through.
I feel like people kind of just see what happened, and they don't know everything that goes into it, how long the season is now, what you got to do to prepare for, and what's happening all that time from here to to then. So, I feel like we definitely just coached in, we kind of connected, and we kind of just talked, man on man, and he kind of just sent straight to me, and I feel like we kind of both are pretty honest, and we know we're making it together. We're making each other better every day, and we got the four best DNs, five best DNs, honestly, in the college football, and we're gonna be one of the best DLIs in college football. How do you feel like a better player today than you were in this year? Um, I feel like I've taken big steps in my roles, of just being responsible and being more of a leader, and kind of stepping up and taking a step to kind of get out there more on the team, and kind of bring people in, and I feel like we're kind of helping out more. I think I'd rather end around the process since the TKFC is up sale, and the good guys. I mean, it sounds bizarre, but I mean, the season goes by so fast already, so when you're kind of like week 10,
and you're like, wow, it's already week 10, so now it's kind of, it gives you more time to kind of enjoy it, and kind of savor it, because I'm already here for it, and feel like I'm fresh and still, still, still, still, still. Would you want to spend all your powder in the first month or a year, right? Oh yeah. Is that pace yourself, that, but I mean, there is a mindset, that the season has. Yeah, definitely, definitely gonna have that the mental stability to handle all those weeks, and all those practices. I'm looking. How much has Larry talked to you guys around a bit? Last question right here. 2016, 2017, 4 NFL 2.5 seconds, all in the same position. How much has he talked to about that? I mean, he hasn't had to talk about it. We know about it. We've seen it every day. We watched the film. We see them all working together. We know what it could be. We know what it could become. So we know we're right at the same, we're at the right place at the right time, and God wanted us to be here, and He knew we wanted us all to come together and kind of play together, and be able to bounce off, and just perfect our craft together. And I feel like we all are just great individuals, and we come together at some discussion. Great. How did your expectations, like, as to meet up with how you feel
you've played up to this point of guess? I feel like I've made the plays that came to me, and that's where the Ockman can control. I've had more opportunities as years progressed, and been in spots to be here on the ball. But the expectation was to come here and contribute to the team, and try to help find a way to to push the team to win games at high level, and to be better than they were in Lachian for me to play better than I was Lachian. So really just coming to try to grow with myself and with the team. So that was my big goal, and I feel like I've done a good job, and the team has done a good job, progressing through the year and getting better. So yeah, that's all I can say about that. We're here to the right, to make a lot of the growth. Yeah, I can't. Just stay here right now. Does this feel like a different season? What does it feel like for you going into playoffs? You know, you don't get the goal you wanted, necessarily to make your chase, but here you are. Right? I mean, what is that sense
that you have right now that's different for making a season? I mean, everybody wants to say it's a new season in terms of because if everybody's 0-0 right now, when you keep going, if you lose, you're done. So I mean, but genuinely, that's how you get to play every game. You know, they play every game, and that's your last game. So for me, I don't think it's really any difference. You really go play at a high level every game. That can't be based upon a player game. You know, so you have to go play every game, like he's the same thing. So I would say in terms of that, no, you just have to play the game. Play the game is there. What feels difficult is defense right now going into this. No, y'all feel even more. The time we work, we know. Go by the tide, and we close together. What, what is it? I mean, what is your sense of the brotherhood, so to speak, of the defense? I feel like we progressed throughout the season. We didn't make a change after game six, because we lost, and we didn't play well again.
And I feel like we've grown from that, and got into a better place. And over these past two weeks, off just realizing, OK, these are the things that we messed up throughout the year. These are what we need to face. These are what this team is trying to exploit on us. So just really going back through everything, seeing what we can do better for this kind of game and for the next couple of years. Let's go for questions. Deep, Tony, you heard me, fuck out. How does the Tennessee's wide split with your receivers impact you as a hundred? I feel like it makes the game more, more, more, one game. I mentioned receivers on your DBs at the play at a second game than the guys up front. And it makes it, truthfully, those guys up to do their job. And these guys have to do your job. You got to be able to stop the running with the people that you have in the running fit. And you have to be able to stop their path with the people that you have out there. So that's what they do, and they do it at a really lead level. So it's going to be tough to go with. And finally, question. Joy-Cop, on this discussion. Phil, Coach Nolz, we're talking about the speed at which
there you guys are at the call end play. And since these built the ten-builders of the top facts, you can play call end with. And the player of kind of ends is at the end that you get to use the speed of the steps called level. All right. It allows you to get your clean senator. So earlier, just a ability to see the formation, see what keys that you have before the play and have knowledge of your job and not really thinking. Being able to play and not think during the games are really a big thing. So whenever you get to call it faster and play at a high level and play without thought, that's a really good thing for you. Caleb, thank you very much. Appreciate you all. I did come up out here because you're a good coach. I was a lot of people. Oh, yeah. You're a good coach now. So I definitely did it in high school. I was pulled back and a little bit of tidied in. So I feel like it kind of saw what I could do there in Coach Wilson, honestly. He left watching it too before he left. And I feel like he planned that seat in Coach Day's head and Coach Day kind of just went for it and tried to do the best I could to do it. Executive chin wing now, I mean.
Do anything in the screen. New playbook, item now, you haven't got that far. How tough is that? You know, look at that. I like to think myself as a football player. I can really play any position on the field. You need me to just give me a weaker two to learn it and kind of perfect it and try to do my best for you. Kid Jack, do the same thing. Oh, yeah. What's your graph? I think that's what. Can you just talk into Coach Johnson on Tuesday about some of the conversations and sort of start you and you've got out to outside conversations after JT and Jack decided to come back. Just want to kind of lean into those. And how do I help you really get the right mindset? I guess we need to do this for. Definitely kind of seeing it all the way through. I feel like people kind of just see what happened and they don't know everything that goes into it, how long the season is now, what you got to do to prepare for and what's happening all that time from here to then. So I feel like we definitely just coached in me kind of connected and we kind of just talked to the man or man and he kind of just sent straight to me
and I feel like we kind of both have gone on. We're making it together. Making each other better every day. We got the four best DNs, five best DNs, honestly. And then coach football and we're going to be one of the best D-Lines in coach football. How do you feel about the better player today at any more game in the season? I feel like I've taken big steps in my rules of just being responsible and being more of a leader and kind of stepping up and taking a step to kind of get out there more on the team and kind of bring people in and I feel like I'm kind of helping out more. I think record head around the posture of the T-K-A-C. The zip sound, the dip sound. I mean, it sounds bizarre, but I mean, the season goes by so fast already. So when you're kind of like week 10 and you're like, wow, it's already week 10. So now it's kind of getting more time to kind of enjoy it and kind of savor it because I'm already in here for a really freshness of the pitch crazy. But you don't want to spend all your time here in the first month of the year, right? Oh yeah. There is a not pace yourself that good. There is a mindset for the season. Yeah, definitely, definitely going to have to have
the mental stability to handle all those weeks and all those practices. How much is Larry talking, guys? Around a bit. Last question right here. The T-K-A-C. 2017, 4, and a 5, 2, 5, 2, and it's all in the same location. How much does he talk to about that? I mean, he doesn't have to talk about it. We know about it. We've seen it every day. We watch the film. We see them all working together. We know what it could be. We know we could become. So we know we're right at the same, we're at the right place at the right time and God wanted us to be here and He knew we wanted us all to come together and play together and be able to bounce off and just perfect our craft together. And I feel like we all are just great individuals and we come together at something special. You get like good coaches who believe in you and they give you the tools to go out there and just play with confidence. You know, not their doubting yourselves. Like, you got your teammates, you got your back. My first play when I got up there at Tennessee, like when DeZoe, IGB and I remain. Like, first thing they say is like, no, where you just go out there and play with confidence. You know the tools, there's usual tools. You just go out there and make a play. And we're about to play coming to you. You know, we're just so time to show job. You just do it.
And then like, say what Coach Warren, like he gives me, he puts me in a position like, like the drills we put in, the work we put in, the one on one, so I'm just going out there and just perform at the highest level. How much better are you right now than maybe last month, the fourth spring right? I mean, I got to lay better just because I've transitioned a little bit to the inside. Nick was far so I'm like, now I'm actually trying to like catch, catch, take me again. It's been often pepper is not, it's not always press at the line. So it's like not maybe to like move my feet, move my hands, like see, like what I got to do, just like, just in case I got to go back in corner, I can, I plan off now, I'm very confident out there. Do you think that Nick was a natural fit for you or have you had to kind of convince yourself to transition around? I mean, I feel like it's natural for me because I feel like me individually, I'm a fast learner. A fast learner, like Coach has helped us like, learn fast and like, because they're always honest about the techniques and stuff. So you like, you play down, like you pick up all the things and then like, when we get out here, they coach us to like, to take me so we just go out there and play like fast spot. And then you know, I would like,
when we're sort of, you're able to go out there and just compete. Is that where you kind of stuff, just spring or do you get kind of mountain? So I'm really been stuck there. This spring a little bit right, whenever you get it's like other things, I just bounce out there every once in a while, just like have just have fun. See if I still got it every once in a while. So it's as good as go out there to compete at most spots. You mentioned the technique, what technique tips and things that you had to pick up and learn from, what you're from. And you can do that inside. I mean, this is always like, you're all, because what, which is the awesome hands, like, see it, you see it, move your feet, and then hit your hands with your hands on the mat. So it's like, when you get like, when you out there, you're able to like, just process like the way the receiver comes off the ball, looking at the hips and seeing like the way he moves. And so you're able to pick up like the row concepts, you can get out of that. So it's being like, under coach walls, I mean, like as a player and just like, him breaking out football to you like, one on one, it's like very beneficial. What was the hardest part of making that transition from outside that sense?
I really say like, cornering you got your cover two, you cover three, you cover one, it's easy, but then you got nickel. There are so many responsibilities you gotta see, like the row concepts, you gotta be able to process like, dying those rows faster than what you gotta do in that corner and just be able to like, everything's quid, like, you're transitioning, you gotta like, you gotta move fast, you gotta just learn to move fast. It's like game recognition, where you think maybe from the most since you got to, and how since you got to, I'll definitely say, I'll definitely say, as long as you get to like college, it's a little bit different, like high school, we don't got to worry about things like that. But when I want you to get to like college in school, like this, like your recognition of plays, and like your loyal jobs, the way like the coverage is supposed to be played, understand all your teammates or fuses you have when you feel, it's like it gets easy. What if your credit is bad? It's very talented. I mean, he's a great dude, he's a humble guy, great teammate, very supportive. It's like a guy that you don't want to wrong, because you can feed off your energy
because you can see like, when you make a play, he's like, he's like, IGB, so he's like, when you get off there with guys, like that with good energy, it makes you play a little bit harder, and it's like, and then like when you make a play, it's out there, it's helping you, it's being out there with him, he's a good player. One of those guys, trust question, careful kids, I would say obviously, I'm a last one of the players, so just help me so you're good. So now, what is it about one build that gets you to play at a high school? It's a big question, I know. Just a big question, because we have so many kids come out of Google and just play at games, elite, elite schools, and they like, like, tracks a big part of it, because I mean, actually in a Google, everybody got to run a track, like it's made it through, you don't really get a choice. You're able to just like get out here, and like know how to compete, and then like, like, getting builds that mental toughness into you, so like, have you like, if you're down, you got to be mentally tough, because I mean, life's not going to be easy, so it's like being out here,
you know, we could be when you down, just pick yourself back up, I mean, that's what being is done for me, and that's what being is done for me. All right, we got to ask. DT, how would you describe the mentality of the defense right now, being this opportunity for Greenhouse Awarding? Yeah, hungry, thankful. I mean, we know how the last time when, you know, we had a chip on our shoulder. I mean, we were riding high before that game, and we took that loss, and we came back and had to make a couple changes, but I think we understand what, you know, everything's at stake right now, you know, just fighting to where another house stages for the next game. That's what's on stake, and just to be able to represent this state, and this team. I mean, we understand what's on the line, and we're just hungry and blessed that we get this opportunity playing the Rose Bowl. Right behind you, Adam King. WBNH, what do you remember most about walking off the field in Eugene? What was kind of going through your mind in that moment? I mean, there was a, I don't think anybody imagined it, imagined us losing, you know, I didn't,
that's for sure, and I think after that, it was a kind of head deep, but I understand it, that man, we still, there's still a lot of ball left to be played. I mean, you can let it sting for a little bit, but, you know, if you let it carry over too long, then, you know, there it goes, there it goes your whole season, but I think we did a great job of just understanding, coming together in this room right here, not being afraid of display or hold accountability for one another, and, you know, as that happened, we came back, we grouped, and, you know, we're just, we're just going right now, and I'm just blessed for those specific moments, you know, losing. I mean, no one wants to lose, but the testimonies and the things are taught within those little situations, speaks of all of them. After all, right, Vladimir D'Roll. Jay, what did he see from Kenya in the last couple of weeks? Was there like a push from him and then there were many conversations with him, and he could see like he's playing since the best football in the season? Yeah, I mean, that's my boy, he's in the R2X club too,
but, you know, Kiyada, I mean, every time his numbers call, he goes out there and makes the most of it, no matter where we are in the game, when he goes out there, he's just hungry. He wants to go make plays, and, you know, we see it in practice, so it's not surprising to us. Bill Rebino, I just want to put this back. Dylan gave us obviously a very elusive and her talent, and he's not very tall. How important it could be to just kind of stay in your past rush lanes and neglect a lot of balls and kind of make a difference that way? Yeah, I think it just comes on being disciplined, knowing who you're playing against, like you said, then he's a, he's sure, but he's very elusive. I mean, he can, he is making throws. I mean, he get out the parking to everything. So I think for us, we just have to discipline and just continue to just meet with Coach Jay, meet with the coach's nose and understand how we can just eliminate that. One question about you and Jack. I mean, your personality seems to be a little different. You're more on the quiet side. He's, he's not.
Yeah. How about you play together four years, both five-star guys, kind of describe your relationship with him, friendship with him, and just kind of how you cop along each other? Man, that's my brother. Like he said, we're different, but very alike. I think outside, like you said, he's louder, I'm quiet, but you know, once we're on that field, we're like the same person. We'll do anything for this team. You know, we'll die for our players and we'll give everything we got. Room together for four years, correct? Yeah, fall camps. Every group of players. Yeah, sometimes go over there. So go over there. So yeah. The one who's the messy one. We have our share of days when we, when I'm neat, he's neat, or you know, we might both be messy, but we do a good job. No problem. Yeah. I'd probably say I'm a better-cognitive actor. Tony Gertman, like I hell. When you're playing a team for the second time, and that was almost a season to go by now, how much of, are you at square one with the scouting and preparation, or how much do you take in that game,
how much do you avoid taking so that you don't have any preconceived notions of what you're going up against, not that's only offense-floor? I say it's pretty 50-50. I mean, that game, like you said, it was a while ago, but at the same time, they elevated as a team, so did we. So we understand that they had, they made some changes for sure. There's a certain tendency we can take back from that game, but we also understand that they went on a little run after that, and we can see that they elevated as offense. So we just got to continue to watch those games, dissect other games and just continue to see what stands out and what they change for the past game. We got a couple calls on Zoom that will wrap up with, first we have Nick Hamilton from Nightcast Media. Nick? Just wanted to ask you basically about the synergy of this defense and how you guys were able to not only celebrate the triumphs, but get through the adversity to be able to be this top notch defense that you are in college football today.
Here, the question one more time. Yeah, no problem. One to ask you is about the synergy you are able to develop over the course of the season, obviously celebrating the triumphs, but also getting through the adversities to where you are all the top notch defense that you are today. Yeah, I mean, like you said, we went through a lot of trials to trials, but there's also, there's a lot of things we can take away from all the wins and losses. And from those wins, we understood that, hey, we can be the best defensive country, and from those losses, we understand that there's still things that need to be fixed. And I think when you take all that in, at once, that comes out to the common goal, or the common target, which is, you can, there's always learning points everywhere. And depending how we dissect those games or how we just continue to come as one and elevate, you know, we continue to just collect all those learning points and just continue to grow from them. And one final question. Joey Copp and Columbus Dispatch, Joey. JT, what have you guys done better in the,
especially in the Tennessee game, and just late in the season, you think about turning some of the pressures that you've got on the quarterbacks and the sacks and getting home in some of those situations? Yeah, I think it was more just understanding the defense as a whole, understanding everybody's job. I think as the season went on, we got to understand that, you know, we have to know what's going on in the backhand, we have to know what's going on to align back recruits to understand what plays we have, the room of freedom. And I think once we understood that and got a better understanding of everybody's job, I mean, it showed this play, because everybody knows what each other's doing. It's not like the linebackers know what they're doing. The corners and B.I., they know only their job. I think we all know each other's job and we continue to ask each other questions on, you know, if they're listening, how they can get to the quarterback and, you know, if I'm dropping, playing quarterbacks, well, I can ask Cody on how to open field tackle it. So, you know, we just kind of lean on each other's understanding because, you know, like I said, like, DeZoe knows how to play corner-bending and I know how to play corner.
So, you know, he has more wisdom at that position than I do. JT, thank you very much. Thank you. Thanks, man. Chris, you know, it's like that when the ball's kind of moving. Definitely, a little bit of both. And obviously, I just wanted the team to win. I think we got a chance to win. No, definitely towards it. And to stretch that last drive, I was a couple of plays here, a couple calls, maybe you should have gotten, but I think the frustration more so it just comes from, you know, wanting to win more or anything. What you said, he was a little surprised how much attention you had right away from your defense. How about you? Yeah, definitely. We maybe killed him or one of ones kind of how the game playing was set up. You didn't get a lot of different coverage out of cloud to my side. And I just kind of had the game goes. What's the process, Ben? I don't know, just sometimes where, or whatever reason, just see that. Yeah, definitely. Especially in college, a lot of the game fans defensively were taking me away. You know, they had a lot of success at a high up state. Obviously, one of the boys had in different weapons.
They kind of still get the victories. And I was, yeah, you continue to do better jobs when I hear. Why are the communication that process been like post game, getting on the same page with Kyler, just against exchange tax, or do you guys get into the snowman? Yeah, they're filming them, definitely. Kind of asking what did I see there, kind of go over and play. And I just kind of give them what I saw, and kind of different feedback there. Exchange words. Mark, I get it. We're asking questions about the previous game. Are you the type of guy to let a game like that winger, or how do you flush it? You got to move on. Got to move on some long season. You got 16 more of them. Hopefully, no, I can stay healthy throughout the year, and just continue to build and get better each week. You guys did so much work throughout the off season to get on the same page. How different is it when you get into that ring of the season 10? Yeah, it's totally different. It's totally different. You can do a lot of things, you know, inserts and shorts. And then once you go out there, put practice and you got pads on, you do like the point practice you do with the colds, but there's nothing like actually going out there in live action.
And really trying to be on the same page. So I think that relationship will continue to develop. And we'll get better. Is that it? Just a matter of reps then. This one's the thing. Yeah, definitely, definitely. Like I said, I was kind of my first live action together. So I can continue with. When you're early impressions, what time I'm going to feel together and when the creases are with Kyle? Yeah, but now obviously I have a death certificate to expect JG's call or preseason. And obviously we all feel really healthy. That's kind of the most important thing. And obviously that's all healthy even going forward. So. Marvin, what are your early impressions of the Rams? What do you think of the Rams? Yeah, I mean, they're a good team. They're good physical team. I got a new lot of new guys up front, I think. That's kind of where the strong suit is. Kind of a little different to Buffalo. Come more of a little match coverage. So I'm excited to go. Personally, when the belts did give you one of my opportunities, how do you feel today? Wasn't many of them. Wasn't many of them. So I feel like I need to get. I'm sure you think game versus just playing.
You know, not getting a preseason game actually. I think it's a lot. It's definitely, definitely thinking a lot out there. And I think I'll come with reps. I think to think and less and just going out there and playing definitely come with reps. And it's something you ought to get better at. But definitely, I was thinking a lot out there. Is there anything you can do to prove that that's for all coverage? Anything you did in the past? Because you're going to face that a lot, obviously. Yeah, I mean, you just got to team. Get open for yourself, make yourself available. And when the ball does get away, making the play. But if he's just taking you away, then he's other guys are having a chance to get open. So that's how kind of high it is. No longer since the season of offense. That's the best thing for us. They're kind of going to be with Kyla. This is something that comes pretty quickly. What do you mean? Or something like that? What's your plan? Hopefully sooner or later, I think. I'll continue to see. We'll see. I don't think we're in a bad place right now at all. Obviously, I don't really think that. But just a live reps will continue to grow and show. I think how I believe maybe different than somebody else may believe. And I like to practice at least.
I could be positive. You know what I mean? So, but the energy at will be on just so I can't. I want to be going on. I'm living my whole life. I felt like I felt team captain, like specifically. And I felt I wasn't a captain in high school. Wasn't a captain in college. But I want to make a joke. I was in high school. So I feel like I'm not going to be a captain until I get that. I felt. But that would be awesome. But, you know, that happens. I'd be great. But not either way. I want to assume the world has a captain from the perspective of guys on to the visual words and to get back to that point. Yeah. I mean, I can't say that. I mean, I guess the biggest thing is that I felt like I was used to in the past. But it didn't take just the first LTAs. It took training and left and right.
I was just a season. I didn't know what it was going to be. So I felt like a lot of regrets just to give back to feeling like myself for a day one LTAs. And then that whole first week. But now like today specifically, just changing some small things with my feet. That is it. Talking about the long coach. I've some things I'm doing my feet to get to that, to sound that traditional angle that I love to sit on. I thought I felt great already. I felt even better. Sorry, the more excites tomorrow now, I'm getting my feet back and how I like the right side and on the left side. So long side. I mean, obviously I feel like in the lead, whether you're left or right, you're still going against premiere guys. So obviously, you have high expectations for the left angle. But there's definitely a level of energy. And like the expectations definitely take the humans back. Because now connectable, I'm sorry. That's the D tackle world.
So yeah, I would say in terms of communication as far as this, even outside of the facility, you just stuff like that, like really creating that. But tackle quarterback, bond even more often. The old I think has been something that's even good. I got the text one day. And I said, hey, thank you. Well, I was like, you know, yeah, I've been training both. I've been training both. You know, I asked after the season there, like honestly, we'll talk to you. So please see them. And I just got a text on how to have this with the free agency. So I was like, you know what? I had an old season right tackle. So if I get the word, I'm going to stand right tackle. I'll just do what I did before I'm built on that. But I was like, I might as well be trying to let tackle now. As if I'm going to be left tackle. And I'd rather do that than train all the right time with the co-a. I was like, I'm going to switch my feet. You know what I mean? So I'm like, let me just prepare an advance.
I was like, yeah, it was gone. You know? I think occasionally on third down there will be a lot of twists. I was just not like it's automatic. And I think that was my mindset for like the first half of the season. Like I didn't have to go into a game with some pros. Like, oh my gosh, I did that. I kind of figured, okay, like this is the type of rush. This is how this guy usually rushes. If I get the vibe, this is how the end is like the rush. You know, tackles that first year guys. We got the premier patch on. I already know what it was going to be. I already know what we every stunt. And honestly, just knowing that's kind of an advantage to, so you're not, you're not, oh, the problem's with the mind. It's like it was never airy-dommily. But it comes up when I was like, three plays in a row. Two minutes. I knew that. It was the one that I knew. And he said a lot. You know what I mean? I'm watching more everybody else. And he rarely goes out there occasionally. I was like, you know, he's going to pick me. You know what I mean? So, that effect, that's kind of, it's also kind of an advantage in a way.
But it's also exciting. I'm going to get the hardest to look. You know, those are the real, real reps. You know, the things. Really out on our way to kind of process. I was like, hey, when I tell him, let me know about it, I'm just going to train it. I was training all left. So, TAs, I guess if I didn't hear anything about TAs, I would have came in like, so, you know what I mean? Because just like, I'm cool with training both continue. I would have been cool with training both continually. But I feel like anybody, any position, will be like, okay, like, you want as soon as possible to get your feet kind of settled in, your hips settled in, your hands, so then, certain kind of that. We've been hardly able to work both very healthy. No, no. But they're definitely, but in terms of the development, they're definitely a lot faster to stand on one side. But I think having that, the weeks that we had the transitional seasons over,
I'm going to like respond. You know, look, I'm trying to get up to put them on the ground and have any weak things at a time right now. But when it comes back, I'm going to show them that you're on the house. I've got a house that's not too far from, so I told them, I got that house, so I can get a yellow outside. DJ. You know what I mean? So, yeah. That's that's not having any stock or anything. It doesn't mean anything. We're at the play on Friday, and that's really all that matters. We're going to take two more from Zoom before turning it back. Our first one's going to come from Stephen from Cleveland.com. Go ahead. It's the final, sorry. Hey, Caleb. We've seen, you were talking about the Ohio State Office, the success that they've had. Obviously, Jeremiah has been a big part of that. What's it been like this year going against him in practice? And after doing that, is it surprised at all to see him having the success he's had as a freshman?
No, it doesn't bring surprises. It was pretty easy to see the talent that he has and the blessings that God has put on his plate. But it's always a challenge going against Jeremiah and other receivers and Mecca and Karnel in practice. And even guys like Brandon and his impression Rogers, they do a great job bringing looks for the defense and create a lot of obstacles. Our final question from Zoom is going to come from Dan Hope. Go ahead, Dan. Caleb, you, Quinn had a lot of success against you guys when you played him at Alabama last year. Just what do you remember from going up against him last year and what can you learn from that game? Really smart quarterback knows how to operate their offense. Puzzle ball in the right places. And then Coach Narkeeson does a great job putting him in positions to win. Jerry, back to you. Yep, thank you Rob Aller. Columbus Dispatch, Caleb, JT and Jack Land opposite sides and they is opposite off the field. As they are on in terms of personality and just the people they are.
They're offices but they are also like one of the closest people I know they spend a lot of time together. They've come from different sides of the country so they're different people for sure. But they're both really great people and really great men. I'm sorry I respect both of them. How did you do that? I'm not going to do that. I'm sorry. I'm not going to do that. It's about to ask the war on podcast. Throughout the season we would always see you on Wednesday nights you and Nathan would be some of the last people off the field. Are the things that you're working on after a practice always the same? Is it a routine? What are the things that you're hoping to get out of those extra moments after practice? It's a routine, pretty much the keys that we need to go into the game with. And then also changes week to week on based on what our jobs are going to put us into doing. So every week we go through the same things and then we add certain things that we do for the...
What the team that we play is going to ask us to accommodate. Bill, we've been on this club this past. Yeah, I already got one here. Okay, Joey Goplin, club this this past. Killin. When... Texas uses play action and Nathan uses play action a fair bit. What do they do well in those spots and what's the best you guys in those moments with Quinn? They do a really good job with IKANDY. And it creates a lot of challenges for defense in order to see if it's a runner path. And see, because that's when they're going to take their shots to as well. So really just having great eye discipline, seeing the line and seeing what it's telling us. So that's what it is. Deep right, Nick Walker, Letterman Rolfe. Hey, look, you guys had a pretty good game plan for Tyler Warren when you guys played him. You guys have another Texas has a good tight end and Gunnar Mountain. What are you guys going to have to do to limit him and how do you think about his game? He's a really good player. He makes a lot of plays and he has a lot of receiving arts this year.
So really just do the same thing we've done all year. Just be disciplined in our responsibilities. And if you're on them, you've got to make a play when it comes. Right, one of the Mandarin Guilds. Cleveland.com. When you look at their receivers as kind of a whole, you know, they spread ball around. So there's a lot of what stands out about the way that they can spread ball around with them. A lot of really good athletes. I played with Isaiah Bond last year who's a really great receiver, a lot of speed. And then all their receivers have made a lot of plays. So I mean, everybody has a feeling that peace and queues if we're going to stop them and do a really good job. From here, Tim May, Letterman Rolfe. Yeah, Kale, but you moved up here. I don't have to tell you when you moved. It's not basically a year ago. It's a little bit of a leap of faith because you know, you know how many athletes are on this team. You can get athletes to stuff. But why didn't you really feel this defense come into its own? And then then pass that, man, watching in Rose Bowl, you're recognition of what was coming seem to be on point.
Did it feel like that? I mean, you personally. I think the defense has played really well throughout the season. We've had games where we played better and games where we haven't put it all together. But I think that's how all defenses are. So I can't say there's a certain moment where I think we put it together. But what's your second part of your question? You seem really on point against Oregon about recognizing what was coming. I mean, you were really active out there directing and things like that. Did it feel like that? I guess. I mean, like as Luke said earlier, the preparation that we put in goes into that. And just feeling comfortable in what we're doing, comfortable in what we're seeing with the other teams. I feel like that allows us to play fast and me and Laketon to communicate to everybody else. Did I miss anyone for questions here? Steve, how long in front of you in this sport? Yeah, Caleb, but you came to Ohio State to play for National Championship. And there were a lot of ups and downs throughout the season.
Just to be in this position, the last four teams still live. You feel validated by that. Did you always have faith that this is how it was going to turn out? I came to Ohio State to become a better player and to help the team be as good as it can be. Not to win a National Championship. Like that wasn't the only goal for me coming here. I really just wanted to be in the team and be with the brotherhood. But it's a great feeling being in the final four and being with the team and everything that comes with that. But it's a blessing to be here. And one final question, Bill, where Ben wants to play this back? I did a lot of follow-up when I talked to you at that time of the game. You said when they scored their first and second touchdown, you were really hot on the sidelines. What was your message to the team? You know, that's a good off. They're going to score against most people. Why were you so hot? Really just because we didn't execute, which let them score. We've done that a lot, which is something we can't do in these big games and these games where it's winter go home.
So we got to make the plays when they come and get our competitive excellence as Coach Dases make the play where your numbers call. Caleb, thank you very much. I feel like they're definitely picking up quick. I mean, I was in their shoes one time and I had Zach Harrison, Javonte, Tyler Friedel in front of me. So I feel like I'm just trying to be one of those peers that they work for me and kind of just give them the steps to get there. And I feel like they're definitely picking up quick and they're definitely going to be one of the great rushmen. So we coached Josh and Sokis on the team. JT and Zach probably didn't need it. It's on their big screen. Maybe that's a little opportunity for me to do a lot of things. Is there a difference in the work going to be the beginning of the game for you after the champ? The last couple. I feel like all the camps I've definitely got in a big course load and I love that. So I asked Coach Jay for it. I love getting more reps because I just like attacking my craft. So I mean, some people may not need it. Some people need it. But I mean, I'm just like you have me reps like you have. Speak on that course load.
So what do I mean? I mean, for me, it's always just kind of getting my little details perfectly, like my steps, my footing. Kind of just perfecting my toolbox is what we call it, my craft, and just trying to be a second whenever every place is what kind of difference. We're in the two grand biggest cities in the world. We're going to try that out. We're going to see what we're going to do. Yeah, definitely just getting stronger faster, everything all the above. But one of my big things is being a leader. I'm kind of just not trying to look, still look up to Jack and JT and kind of have my own kind of leadership and be able to bring people into it. So I feel like we kind of have a lot of leaders on the B line and at the B in position. So we kind of all kind of just kind of talk to each other. It's definitely tough for me to be able to help you guys playing with them all. You're right. You're on the field and just like that's my big deal. And it's trying to help you. It's just like, do you need this guys? How does that transition take place? Um, it's really competitive. We love it. We all competitive people. We all look at fish and chevro.
And I feel like we're bringing the best side of all of this. I feel like we all just kind of bouncing off each other and seeing what one person does. And we kind of brittle into our actual box. And we all kind of just kind of build one great thing. And you're going to last year and you've got to get the shot of the full back in the boat. And they approach you with that idea and you coach them. I mean, how did that come about? Because you're a good jacks high or a floppy. Okay. It gets test. So I definitely did it in high school. I was full back and a little bit of tidied in. So I feel like it kind of saw what I could do there in Coach Wilson. Honestly, he left watching it too before he left. And he played that seed in Coach Day's head and Coach Day kind of just went for it. And I tried to do the best I could to do it. Is that the genuine now? I mean, do anything in the spring? New playbook. I did not know you haven't got that far. Yeah, you haven't got that far. How top percent of you? You're looking back. I like to think myself as a football player. I can really play any position on the field. You need me to just give me a weaker two to learn it and kind of perfect it.
And I'll try to do my best for you. Kit Jack, do the same thing. Oh, yeah. And we're athletes, that's why. Kit, just talking to Coach Johnson on Tuesday about some of the conversations and sort of saw you and got out to have some conversations after the JT and Jack decided to come back. Just got to win into those from your perspective. And how do that help you really get the right mindset I guess when you need this. Um, definitely kind of seeing it all the way through. I feel like people kind of just see what happened and they don't know everything that goes into it. How long the season is now. What you got to do to prepare for and what happened and all that time from here to to then. So I feel like we definitely just coached Jamie kind of connected. Maybe we kind of just talks man-to-man and he kind of just sent straight to me. And I feel like we kind of both have gone on. Let's play. And we know we're making it. We're making each other better every day. And we got the four best DNs, five best DNs, obviously. And then college football and we're going to be one of the best DLines in college football. How do you feel like a better player today than you were again this year? Well, I feel like I'm taking big steps in my roles of just being responsible and being more of a leader.
And kind of stepping up and taking a step to kind of get out there more on the team. And kind of bring people in and I feel like I'm kind of helping out more. I think I'm right in the head around the past. I mean, it sounds bizarre, but I mean the season goes by so fast already. So when you're kind of like week 10 and you're like wow, it's already week 10. So now it's kind of gives you more time to kind of enjoy it and kind of savor it. Because I'm already here for you. I'm freshness for you. But you know what's been on your powder for the first month of the year, right? Oh, yeah. Is that not past yourself that? I mean, there's a mindset that I did that season. Yeah, definitely. Definitely going to have to have the mental stability to handle all those weeks and all those practices. How much has Larry talked to you guys around like that? Last question right here. You've been on the team for 16, 2017, four NFL defense awards all in a row. And so, just know what does he talk about? I mean, he doesn't have to talk about it. We know about it. We've seen it every day. We watch the film. We see them all working together. We know what it could be.
We know we could become. So we know we're right at the same, we're at the right place at the right time. And God wanted us to be here and he knew we wanted us all to come together and kind of play together and be able to bounce off and just perfect our craft together. And we are just great individuals and we come together and something special. Great. Doing it? What were the deliberations? I'm surprised it's even a conversation. Like, it should always be live. Let's tell you. Tell you. Tell you play football. So obviously, there's a proximity to the season, which is a little reckless, I understand that. But in spring, we're competing for jobs. I mean, if I'm a quarterback, I'm asking to be live so I can show him how I'm different than, you know, anyone that can't be live. You know what I mean? They're always trying to find an edge. And if you're never fully alive, I don't think you fully give a guy's opportunity to be who they want to be or who they can be. So that being said, I will cast my vote, but that will not be my final decision on that. But I will cast my vote. The guy's a hamster that, well, it was good for all parties involved.
And more we can do that, the better, but I'm sure that is coming to a close here very quickly. So. That would be 20 percent. Right. Jeremiah Off the Field, we saw after practice on the Saturday that the mob that came to get autographs and things. When you're working with him on all these things you're talking about, but also dealing with the life of being one of the biggest names in college football, how do you help mentor him in that aspect? Yeah, I mean, it's a blessing to be able to be in a position where you know, can provide insight or I wouldn't say recommendations, but just give perspective. What he chooses to receive a perspective or not one and not me. He always does, but which is fine. But to be in that position is really humbling. That being said, he does a really good job on his own. He doesn't need to check down too much. He's really done a great job. Again, the way he was raised in his morals and humble and always sign and taking pictures.
I'm always trying to be the bad guy for him because he's not going to be and just says again more about his character. But he's not the only guy any guy would kind of do that. We have a group full of awesome young guys, but Jeremiah has done a great job with it, handling it. And it's definitely growing at an exponential rate to say the least. But I think he's built for it and he's been handled at a high level. But those around them were trying to help him out a little bit. What made Quincy the first freshman to do this black striker? Yeah, I mean, that's a good question. I think that, you know, frankly, you know, I don't, I know I'm not really fully involved with that. So I can be, but I wasn't. You know, I think that people on the outside would be defense or even coach day or anybody brought it to my attention. You know, we're kind of just going about practice and that's our expectation to make plays, not make mistakes.
And he's starting to make a lot of plays consistently. I think the consistent level that he's been as a person, being on time and doing his job description on each play and the ball is coming your way and making some big plays. And, you know, it starts, it starts being seen by your peers and your peers are asking for it. They start barking, getting a stripe off all those kind of things. That's the ultimate sign of respect. I think when your peers, you know, go to your bat. And he's not going for his bat. No one, no, people are bringing it to your position coach. I think it speaks volumes of the general respect that you're earning through the process. So I think it's something like that happened. And, you know, as well as they're based on his peers and the other coaches. So on Christian, Cleveland.com. Ryan Day was talking about home press. He's been this spring with Austin, Sarah, all that he's been able to do and Tyler Bohn was talking last week about the importance of the cross training and all that that goes into that. Just how much have you seen Austin benefit from this spring and everywhere that he's been and helping with peace.
Do you think he's going to be regardless of where he fits on this offensive line? Yeah, I think Austin's been awesome. He literally, you know, what was they say, he played every split, every position, which is the move around, you know, and handles it. And he's one of those guys. I feel like you watch film over and over again day after day. His name never really gets brought up, you know, in a good way. Like you know, the online, your name gets brought up when. Usually not going as well, you know, I mean, they're literally at the point of the tack on every single play. So there's nowhere to hide. And so. But Austin, when his name gets brought up, it's like, man, that was a good job. A good job pass off that combo. Whatever it's always positive and been really impressed with him. He started in the winter to a great job through the winter. Again, continue to build their respect for his peers. And then he's going to a good job. Really good job just being very consistent to spring. Our left, Jeff Gilbert, press pros. Brian, since you've been working more with the whole offense, come support of that play. What has grown in your, I don't know, appreciation of that position.
And what those guys have to do and go through. What do you think more about those guys versus maybe what you thought before is just a wide receiver guy? Yeah, I mean, I mean, there's no just a wide receiver guy. You are just a wide receiver guy. But you won't be a very later on. It's all about, it's all about quarterback play, you know. So I think in that same world, though, to the point is that, you know, in order to be a great receiver or a great receiver or, you know, receiver guy, whatever you want to call it, there's only one page, just the quarterbacks page. So everything is based off them there. Whether it be their progression, their timing, the stresses they have is what we're trying to minimize. So if you don't fully understand the quarterback play, it's hard to maximize receiver play, I think. That being said, yeah, I'm still always learning. I think that I can't say anything's jumped out massively right now. But I would say that, you know, I guess I would say that the preparation level, I mean,
the what is required to execute and play at a high level, it's just not capable in the a lot of time, right? I mean, there's only so much time where I'll be with players. If you're not willing to spend, you know, your own time getting prepared for practice to be to maximize one's ability, there's a good chance you're not going to maximize your ability. So, you know, other positions, I mean, aligns same thing, I mean, receiver play sometimes can, can, you know, get away from it. We do a great job studying and being in the room extra for sure, but the requirement of a quarterback to know, the fixed protections, the BR run game coordinator based on the calls, you know, to get us in different checks. I mean, there's so much thing you know. And frankly, you know, the, you know, the aligns, the way is good as the quarterback, the receivers, aligns goes the quarterback, the offense is the least goes the quarterback and it's our responsibility to put guys in position to maximize with their capable of maximizing, but their inability to notice that they can just spend extra time outside the a lot of time, I think is critical.
And the amount that it takes, I guess that was maybe a little naive to, but the guys are doing a great job doing it. And time for just a couple more coaches got a meeting, Rob Aller, Columbus Dispatch. Brian, you get to reach the mount top, you got to ban her out there, national champs. I think you keep these guys grounded, being in the moment, looking ahead, not back. Do you, are you tougher on them? Because, no, I think that, I mean, I think we have a lot of guys, you know what? I think it's understanding that we were trying to build the map to get to where you wanted to get to, but now that we have the map, doesn't mean we've traveled the path. So like we know what it looks like, the guys that are here know what it's supposed to look like. The guys that for us, say an unbelievable example, how to get to where you want to get to. So the focus is on trying to replicate what they just did and how they operated. Can't say we've done that right now. So it's very easy to stay motivating because they already know it's not good enough, frankly.
And so the last thing they want to do is put in a ton of effort and then not reach their goals. So motivation, I don't think is needed. I think there is a catching up of those and maybe aren't quite sure what it takes, you know, and. But overall, motivation is not what we've needed. A clarity of message is definitely what we've been focused on and I think the message is being received. So not concerned about, you know, motivation and the looking back, if you will, I think everyone's pretty, pretty focused on being forward and knowing we haven't accomplished anything. Steve, who would you say is the leader of your water secret right now? I would say Colonel Tate, Brandon in this. Probably done the most most outspoken, you know, in the room. Yeah, I would say they're doing a good job. Those are probably the two guys that would jump out of my room. Yep. Brandon, he's been in trouble. Obviously. Car now taking on that role, more and being more vocal. He's a good football player. Obviously, he's going to do that. But that process for him and becoming a more vocal leader took for you to say that.
What was the question? What do you think like the growth of it? Yeah, I mean, he's, I think he's pulled guys aside, you know, had one on one conversations with them. He's locked in. You know, just I think he saw the impact that a mecha made and the role he played and to think that you're going to lose that and then be a better group. Part doesn't mathematically make sense to him. So someone's got to step up in that role and one, I don't know what respects him to. He knows he's capable of it and it's just the desire and the appreciation. I think to be at the order table now, the overhead and appreciate the way I met, probably went about his business. And so he probably valued that, appreciated that. And he's just being assured we still have that. Final question. Could you assess the running back room? I think it's pretty much assumed both is running back to CJ and James. I think that's hand in system is probably the way you've got to go again. How is it working and you see third and maybe fourth guys up in there?
I think that, you know, college football, NFL football, any football really, you got to have depth in running back room. I think that very apparent in the NFL. It's usually a two back system, you know, very very rarely is it one guy. But in college, I think we saw the benefit of that last year. The ability to compliment each other is really important. The ability for us to identify what they do great and put them in good positions to be what they are. What they're best at, I should say, is really important as a coaching staff. It's been very impressed with even the younger guys Sam and, and, and bow and the way they've come along. Consistencies, so what you're chasing, right? You're always able to. That's why you're here. But how often you do it ultimately dictates how much you play. So, but overall, I think locksmen on them, they understand the standard and in past pro and not being a guy we got to sell out because you can't pass protect. So we were blessed, but especially with tray last year and in Quenchon. So, but no, these guys have done a good job. They're competing. They've been very coachable.
It's, you know, it's, it's shown a plot on film. But, yeah, I mean, it's always hard on backs. I mean, every opportunity you get to go live and, and break tackles really keeps you the most feedback on what these guys are capable of. If you're just playing tag out there, you never get any art. At least you shouldn't. But the running backs, you know, on contact days, it's done a good job. James has done a really good job growing, really excited about him. Everyone's really excited about him. And CJ. So, you know, I think ultimately, you know, how group the, how will, how good with the group be is probably based on, you know, the top, the bottom rising, right? I mean, you're gonna have some guys at the top, but, you know, where's the floor? And so I think, uh, bow and Sam has done a really good job. And many, some more guys to get healthy. More guys on campus, but very encouraged. And you saw him improve. And then, um, McLean, I think, is a, is a great plus. I mean, he is a guy that has football intelligence. He's picked it up. You know, he's kind of of those incoming freshmen who still should be in high school.
He's a guy. I think you're going to point to and you can see right now. He's going to be a player over to the right. Austin Ward, the podcast. A healthy Mitchell Melton. How does he fit in for your defense? What does he bring to it? Yeah, he's, you know, Mitch is that combination player, you know, in, um, in our four down, you know, he's a guy that can do a lot of things, uh, drop fold in there and make plays. You see some of that all the time. Really athletic, um, you know, we're kind of loaded at that end position. So he's going to play there. But, you know, like I said last year, we, we haven't needed it. But he's a guy you would point to along with CJ Hicks, you know, for the, for the long season. Um, people get injured. You get a little light inside. It's always hard on the defensive tackles. But if you're going to play with three ends, you know, that's Mitch is a guy who definitely can do all that. He has that over to the left. Joey Kaufman Columbus dispatch.
Jim, you've talked about this before, but I think in past years where you're going up against a really talented receiver group offense to encourage your players to it's not okay if they give up to the play and to go nearly almost the first half today where you. The offense didn't get in the end zone until the late in the second half just. And you guys have guys down the second area. Just what did you think of that sort of trend and how it's evolved in the way you guys almost shut them out of the first time. I think it's become, you know, an expectation now, you know, our DB's, you know, our BIA, best in America, we led the country in past defense. Right. I think it was 96 what I, what I got here and it was number one last year. They've taken that spirit. So it's a competitive spirit. It's an expectation now. It doesn't matter who we're going against. It's, it's, they view it as a standard. So that was good to see in the first, first half.
Over to the right Spencer Holbrook, Vladimir and Roll. Jim, we've talked about safety changing the way that you play defense and the Leo and the linebackers, but how much does having the depth that you guys have a defensive tackle change the way that you can do things defensively. I mean, you're going to play to your strengths, you know, and that's, that's my job is to what do we have and what do we do best. And when you have defensive tackles, and I've said it before, it helped our defense so much last year when you have defensive tackles that actually make tackles, which is what we have right now. It changes the way you call a game, you know, it certainly helps you be in better shape on explosive plays on the back end. You don't have to do a whole lot to help those guys out because they're making tackles. So you got to go, you got to go with that, you know, you got to let those guys play and, and they're good. So you can't get too far away from the scheme of having those defensive tackles make place because they're doing it and it works.
Over to the left, Tony Gurdman, Buckeye Huddl. Jim Ryan talked about the quarterback run being more of a thing with the offense here during the season. How much of when you're facing a team like that, how much does that impact your day to day throughout the week preparing for that? Yeah, it's a ton, you know, it I think it changes everything you do on defense. You see it everywhere from the NFL on down if you have a quarterback who can make plays with his feet. You're skiing better be designed that, you know, to take that away into account for it. So it changes the way you look at everything when you're game planning. Thank you, Donovan. Over here to the right, Tim May, the Tim May podcast. Yeah, Jim, you brought me to you when I asked Ryan about just, for example, Calvin Simpson Hunt, but the corner scene did be playing almost with the chip owner, shelter to a certain extent. I mean, Davis and Nick, but no, sin took today personally. It looked like you know, to make us some of the height going into the game, but what do you see from that group in particular that? Who is you going into this off season?
Yeah, when you can when you have corners that you can count on again, just like having defensive tackles in the run game, when you have corners, you can count on that are going to compete all the time, no matter what the situation is. And we've developed that again, it changes the way you call the entire game. I mean, you you're able to leave those guys on an island. You're able to switch out coverages and they know what they're doing and they take great pride in it. So having those guys out there in the development, it's a big deal. It really is. And it's not just an issue of the board. I was given it like that. Yeah, I mean, he's he did come in late and you know, he compete, he's one of those guys that just competes every day, doesn't say much. You know, he's trying to live up to the standard of the other guys and you see him coming along, you know, you see him step by step coming along and you know, put him in a, you know, competitive atmosphere, same step up.
That's a great sign. And final question for coach Knowles, Dan Hope, 11 Warriors. You mentioned CJ Hicks a few minutes ago. Have you seen him take the strides you need to see the spring to trust him as a guy who could be a potential starter on his defense? Yes, I mean, I think CJ has shown that he has talent and I think it's my job to put him in the best situations for him because he can be a force. You know, he's much better when he's bloodsing or he's directed because he's able to use his athletic ability, but he has certainly shown that he's going to be able to help this defense coach. Thank you very much for your time. All right. And we will bring offensive coordinator and quarterback coach Chip Kelly to the podium now. We'll open up questions over to the left bill Rebenowitz Columbus dispatch. Chip, what are your just general impressions of the offense coming out of spring, especially quarterback?
We'll look at all 15. So I think, you know, this day is is a big part of it, you know, because it was the first time they were going to play some of those guys that were going to play in from the crowd. And that was an amazing crowd. You know, 80,000 for spring game. Now you could see some of the young guys kind of looking around like, wow, this is different in the indoor. But that's what they have to get ready to play it. So we got better from practice one practice, 15, you know, it's still in evaluation through the whole process, but it's not something in the players, though, to the will, we're not making a decision walking off the field today. And hey, this is the direction that we're going in. We'll be very authentic and look through everything and make sure that we get a really good feel for what it all looks like and then who will best move this offense. That's what our decisions can do. I do. I think we got a lot of guys there. That part's tough. I think because you got it. There's guys that deserve reps, you know, and they're all competing for it. So, you know, sometimes you'd like to be sometimes when you had a guy who was an initial startable, he's going to get the bulk of the reps to get them better, but they capitalize on. We really rolled them. You know, if you were at some of our spring practices, you're watching all those guys rotate and rotate out.
And as we talk about all the time, you know, the old adage is don't count your reps, make your reps count. You know, we'll put it all together and really come up with, you know, which guy do we really feel is going to help us move this offensively. Over to the far right, Bill Landis, the podcast, Kings of the North. Hey, Chip, you said when we first talked to you that the basis of a lot of your success running the football just kind of figuring out what your guys do best and then leading into that over 15 practices now. How good of a field? Do you think you have for that? And what are the next few months look like as you try to piece that all together? Really good question. It's interesting because the one thing that I think sometimes makes tough and it evaluation is what a good front we want to get. You know, so for 15 practices, those guys on the other side of the ball were paying, you know, Jack and JT and Tai Lee can those guys. But I know come fall. There's not going to be anybody more happy that we have those guys on the defense side of the ball because of what they can do. So I still think we'll have to really evaluate that. What we're going to do. What we got to get better at and what we got to work on.
But I think the work we got against such a quality defense was really key for us. Over to the far left, Nathan Barrett, Cleveland.com. So you were going this time. It came out of the spring with still a lot of question marks about the offensive line. And even I guess that last season came out with question marks. How have you seen that progress in the time that you've been here and what's your confidence level that that offensive line is going to allow this offense to do everything it wants to do this fall? Yeah, I mean, I've been here short amount of time. So I didn't know. I really don't have anything to compare to. So I kind of tab you the rassa come in with a blank slate and just observe it. I think we're really athletic. I think Donnie and Seth and those guys inside are really smart and really intelligent. They allow you to be able to make adjustments in game. Just talking football with some of those guys. It's like, well, these guys are wired the right way. And a lot of those guys have played a lot of football. So they can bank on their experience. I think we've got about four guys that have played significant amount of snaps and we've got to make sure we can find out who the fifth guy is.
But that's similar to where the quarterback spot is. I think. And I also think of the offensive line. You're not going to play a 16-17 game season and just play with five guys. You really have to develop your depth there. There's going to be a number two center that's going to play a lot of football. There's going to be a number two guard whether it's on either side of the ball. There's going to be a third tackle. I think you're going to get tested, especially with this new in this new playoff format. You really have to think that way. So, you're not looking for five starters. You're really looking for 10 starters because you're going to have to probably play 10 guys to get when you get through a 16-17 game season. Over to the right Austin Ward, the podcast. I think it was the first play of the game, the T formation and then the reverse center spin move with Will Howard. What's the inspiration for that package and that sort of wrinkle with the quarterback? Mr. Hayes. There's a looming figure around this whole program. We get to go to work every day and then Woody Hayes athletic center. It was good enough for Woody. We're going to stay there. We're going to do it. We ran some last year. I think we took 21 snaps at UCLA and T.
We've got a short yardage formation for us and we've done some different things with it. I also think our players had a lot of fun practicing that and doing some different things. It's a small part of our offense. We will not be in the T21 times in one game. We may get it in some short yardage situations. I think it's come back. There's a lot of schools right now that are starting to do that. It's really just you're trying to, you've got a half a yard to get. You're trying to get your big guys in the game. I think we use three tight ends and two running backs in our formation today with Pecker being the full back in that situation. There's a lot of different things you can do in short yardage but a little bit of a tribute to Coach Hayes and what he means to this program. Joey Kaufman. Columbus dispatch over to the left. Chip, did you look back? Even your two months, 15 spring practices. Is there something you feel best about what you've been able to accomplish with this offense? Well, I haven't accomplished anything because I didn't take a snap. I think the most impressive thing since I've been here is how close close this football team is.
Some programs talk about a brotherhood. This is really a brotherhood. Our practices, as we talked about, how good our defense is. They're highly competitive but they're not combative. Those guys really work very well together, both the whole line and the D line and the secondary and the receivers. The competition is going to be the best there is in the country. That makes you better. But I think sometimes competition guys can lash out and get really combative. Then all of a sudden the fight breaks out and the fight breaks out. We're trying to accomplish and get footballed on them. But I think the way these guys cooperate and work together as a group is a special bond. I think you're going to need the closest team and the most connected teams on the ones that win. Over to the right here. Andy Baxter, Letterman, or all. Jay Bobbys, there's been a lot of talk about Jeremiah. But Ameca is the big return in this group. He kind of reminded everyone what he can do today. What's it been like working with him and what kind of weapon can he be for you guys? Good point. Ameca has reminded me and the other 14 practice sessions of what he can do. Special player. And JJ is a really talented player also.
I think all of the whole group of Cornell tape did some really good things watching him this spring. And for all of them, I mentioned it with the offensive line. I came in with the blank slate and I had no opinions formed. Not that really just wide eyeed and just observed them. But I think that wide receiver is really special. I think there's a bunch of guys in there. And again, you have to play multiple games after the regular season is over. You're going to make sure you're going to need depth like that. And the fact that you feel a little bit comfortable right now, that we got some guys there that can make some plays on the perimeter. And that really dictates how people are going to defend you. You got a couple of really good running back. Are they going to load the box? Are you really going to load the box and leave those guys in one on one coverage? Well, then it's the quarterbacks responsibility to decipher that and get the ball to those guys. Or do they have less of double coverage? They have less of double coverage. That's a little bit lighter box and you can run the ball. So having too many weapons is a good problem to have. Second roll left, Pat Murphy, 24-7 sports.
Chip, we've talked a lot about the quarterbacks maybe vying for the starting spot. But some of the younger guys, what have you seen from them? We got an opportunity to see more of them today than we probably have. What's your assessment of them as they get into this? I always am so impressed with young guys that enroll early in watching how they get acclimated and what they do. When you look at Julian and Air and JJ, they should be in the hot lunch line of their high school. And they're out here playing in front of 80,000 people. And they've really progressed when you watch them in meetings and listen to them. And they interpret. So basically the whole concept here is we throw them in the deep end and see if they can swim. This we didn't baby anything. We don't put the install in with, hey you guys are in, we're in install. This with the older players. And then you guys go sit at the kitty table and we're just going to do the really simple things with you. They get it all. And the more they can digest, the more when you're in a room, when you're checking for understanding and asking questions.
And they can spit back to you the more confidence you have when they get in there with the plays that you can call for them. Those guys have been impressive. They're still learning. You know, they were the guys today that were kind of looking around and saying, wow, there's like 80,000 people here. Along with the offensive coordinator and the quarterback coach because I was kind of looking around. Because I had actually never been in the stadium until yesterday when we had our 14th practice in there. I played Ohio State once when I was at Oregon, but that was in the Rose Bulls. I had never been actually in the stadium until yesterday. So I caught myself when I went into the stadium today looking around saying 80,000 for spring game. That's impressive. Got time for just a few more folks over here to the right Dylan Davis Delaware Gazette. Given what you just said about throwing them into the deep end, what stood out the most about Julian's progression through 15 practices and where he is as you guys head out of spring? Julian is a very fast processor. You know, he really thinks very, very quickly on his feet. He makes really quick decisions.
He doesn't stick on in re-taken progress in any ceasing. It's really well for a young player. You know, in not having been exposed to a lot of college defenses. And especially what Jim does. You know, Jim can make a young freshman quarterback cry with some of the stuff he does. But, you know, I never saw that with Jules. That's been impressive his ability to retain him and JJ. The compliment I would say to him is if you got here and you didn't know what class they were in, you wouldn't say that those guys were freshmen in terms of how they've picked things up. And sometimes freshmen act like freshmen. But the guys who are special, they don't act like freshmen. They act like football players. And those are two guys that are ever examples of that. Far left, Cameron T. Robinson, the athletic. On the topic of freshmen, James Peebles and Sam, that was around the second half. You talk about how deep you need to be in this era of college football. But as you search for RB3, what did you see from them today?
And what has their growth been like in this spring? Yeah, James really flashed early for me, not knowing again. It's just like, don't worry about what the background is, whether from who they are. That this guy of this stars, that's guy of that stars, they're all bakis. And that's how they do it. I think James has got really good field and vision. He can hit things. I thought Sam did some really good things today. T.C. is another guy who really came along during the spring. And we're constantly talking in our staff meetings about depth. We're very cognizant of the fact that the playoff situation has changed. So you have to develop that depth. You know, used to be maybe have a parent of spare. It was what everybody says. But I think you may have to have more than that. You know, you're talking about 16, 17 games. You're really going to be tested that way. So I was really happy with how those young guys have come along in the 15 training sessions that we've had. Over here to the right, Tim May, the Tim May podcast. Thank you, Jerry. You have your own podcast? Yeah. These guys all had like a name next to their.
You know, it's your name. That's a good name. Okay. That's pretty cool. He must have some juice if you got your name in your podcast. Definitely. Okay. By the way, it's not just the lunch last, the hot lunch last, last, last. Yeah, it's a hot lunch line. Yeah. Just two quickies. Number one, do you feel compelled to let these quarterbacks know where they stand? Yeah. You know, it's coming up Tuesday. You know, to me, they're, yeah. You know, where does that go? I mean, in your mind. Yeah, we're all sat down as a staff and visit meet on it. And then Ryan, maybe he does an unbelievable job of, I think, all our players understand where they fit and what the picture is. And we'll give them our assessment. This isn't, you know, we're not going to come back. But we do it after every day. They know where they stood after practice. One after two, after three, after four. We grade everything. They're getting constant feedback in terms of where we are. And then after 15, which we had today. But we can't do it unless you watch the film and can really look at the things. Because you may see something, but you're on the sideline. You know, why did he make that decision? Well, I couldn't really see the field safety from where he was.
Okay. Now I understand why you made that decision. But they'll have meetings with all our players. And that's always been the method. So this week during, you know, between one day through Friday, we're all scheduled. No one's going on the road, we're recruiting until after that. But we're all a player meeting. He said every position, you know, offensive line, defensive line, linebacker safety is everybody. Everybody's going to sit down with their position coaches and know where they fit. And we see them. But do you feel a pressure with the transfer portal looming? I mean, you've been a head coach for a long time. Mm-hmm. Is that on your mind at TSD? Yeah, I think we're all aware of it. And I'm 100%. And I don't think it's pressure. But I think you just open lines of communication and everybody knows, you know, which, what your evaluation was through the training sessions that we have. Guys, we've got to have, we've got real quick. Last two questions. Dan Hope and then Rob Aller. I feel like you need to have a starting quarterback named by and whatever biggest things you're going to be looking for between now and then and determining who that guy's going to be. Well, between now and whatever then is we're not allowed as coaches to go back out and practice with them, you know, in college football, you get 15 training sessions in the, in the off season.
And then they'll go back to work and with Mick in the weight room and getting bigger, getting faster, getting stronger. They'll have organized activities themselves. And they do a really good job of that. But once there's a football out, like we're not allowed to be there to evaluate and even assess. So they're really from a football standpoint on their own until August. So you always want to do it earlier. But I also believe every time I've been involved in this is that it kind of happens organically and authentically. You know, because the players know. If you say, we decided we're going to be with Joe and they all think it's Tim. You know, they're in the locker room with them every day. Players, players understand, you know, who they'd feel is the guy. And most of the time it, the decision is very obvious. You know, when you just say, this is where we are with it, you know. But there's that timetable thing. I don't, I can't give you an exact timetable on that. Rob.
Chip, you talk about Julian. But typically in your experience, you've done it again, like Tim said a long time. How long does it take for the game to slow down for a very young QB? I think it depends on the individual. You know, I've had some kids where early, you know, you were like, wow. Marcus Murray, I always like that. Remember vividly second practice. And he got to the fifth reading, the progression, and threw it out here in this big game. And I asked him, why I do it all. I asked why, because I just want to understand it. And I said, why did you do that? Because I don't know what we call that defense, but there was like a lot of guys over there. And they didn't seem like there was anybody over there. But for him to process at that time, he was right. And he came back the other day, whether that was cover 60 other day coach. I learned what you guys call the coverages. But it all happens differently. I've got guys that for two years seem like they're just, you know, they're really struggling. And then the light bulb goes off and you go, whoa. Like they got it. So everybody has different learning styles.
You know, our job in the evaluation process is to identify those learning styles. So, you know, they're cognitive learning. They're an auditory learner. You know, do they learn by field? Is it more a field guy? You know, a more film guy. You know, it's all different. And I think we have to keep poking and prodding. And for us as coaches, that's the challenge too, is what is their best learning style? And how can we convey it? Because education basically is just a transportation knowledge. But it really doesn't matter what I know or what Ryan knows. It doesn't matter what they know. So that's always kind of what we're working on and studying and thinking about and kind of where we are. And how much can they handle? And then how much is too much? You know, because this may be a great play. I agree 100%. But if you don't feel it's a good play, then why is it in? You know, I mean, and that's this whole feeling of process that we're all, they're learning awesome. We're learning them. So, I have identities. So do coaches really? Really? Running quarterbacks. And something you've always sort of leaned toward or is it year by year case by case?
What advantages do you like about it? Because all your guys can run a little bit. Yeah, I think a running quarterback causes problems for defense. So when when plays break down, the unscheduled plays, you know, if you just go back to the recent Super Bowl. On that last drive, the two big plays were my home's run. The petrol my home's not a runner. Andy's not calling design quarterback runs for Pat. But when the defense matches up and plays two men and turns their back to the quarterback, well, maybe the best decision is to take off. You know, the second one he took off, I'm like, he may score. You know, a lot of guys go and they want a hook side, you know, and there's times where you have to understand if you do have a running quarterback. If we talk about the best of the best ability is availability. You know, you're not lowering your children, taking people on, but we are always looking for quarterbacks that have the ability to run. We're not looking for running backs that can throw, you know, so you're not going to see us 20 times a game. We're running the quarterback and there are people that run offensive styles and are really successful with it.
But with this group we have right now, that's not. Now they can hurt you with the feet. We'll did it when he was at case eight, you know, obviously Devon took off a couple of times today air took off a couple of times today. Lincoln's a really, really good athlete. Julian can run, but, you know, we're not calling design quarterback runs. You know, you're not going to see, you know, a tremendous reminder, respect for coaches and the legacy that he left here. This straight tee is about as far as we go. We are not going single wing. So we are not going to snap it and run quarterback ice on quarterback power. But it is a, it's another weapon, you know, and if it also keeps defense is honest, you know, if your defense event is going to continue to bend from the quarterback and the quarterback pulls it, he's on the edge and he's gaining first downs. Well then the defensive end has to stay outside and contain the quarterback. Well then we can run the ball up and hand the ball off. Sometimes in our running game our quarterback really is a blocker. He's responsible for a defender if the defender was cheating and fitting it on the run. Well then his responsibility is to make the defense be honest. And that's really air did that a couple of times today. And we had a block that safety was sticking his face in there.
So we took off around the edge. What happens in next play the defense is wider. And what do we have to do? We have to get a chance to hand the ball off to the running man. Coach thank you so much for your time and thank you for being a buck. All right, thanks. It was definitely addressed here, you know, this pretty easy. I think Austin Saribel stepped up in a big way, you know, with Donnie being out. And then you know, you know, Carson can play both guard and center, which is good. And you know, we've actually, you know, sent his done a nice job as well. But it was good to see Austin, you know, he moved from guard to tackle a couple times. And even with the ones he was in there battling his tail off. So I think we have built some depth there. But again, you know, we got to go play some games and see what we're going to do. Rob Aller. What's the main thing you want to see out of here? Why are you coming to the back? You know, again, whether it's whatever happened last year or last year. But I know that the message to our offensive line is we want to play one of the hardest playing offense line in the country. Now we've got to play with technique. But at the end of the play, like knock the line of scrimmage back and play with your hair on fire as hard as you possibly can.
There's a lot that goes with the playing of the offensive lines. All the communication is a lot of things that have to get into place. I think Seth has done a nice job of communicating and it seems the offense better now takes control up front and brings everybody together, which is great. But to me, like that's it. Now we could list a bunch of other things, but to me, we've got to move the line of scrimmage. We've got to be just playing with our hair on fire and knocking people back and playing physical. And that's the start to game. That's the end of the game. This is a destination spot for wide receiver. Do you know what I have to really be? Any knock for a line? You see that definitely and how do you get over that? No, no, I don't see it that way at all. I think, you know, we'll see what we got this year. But I feel like, you know, we've got some really good young players in the system. I think that we should have the best offensive line in the country. That's the standard here. It has been for a long time. And so we'll keep pushing towards that this year. And I think everybody in that room will take the same thing. Tony Gervin.
I was in a situation that will line back for you. You sure you can go right now? I'll see that for you. Yeah. So, Sonny has really stepped up and played well. He's made this transition from safety to line backer very well. I think you did a nice job in the spring, but you could definitely see as he went into the summer, just bigger, stronger, being more comfortable closer to the line of scrimmage. It's different when you're closer to the line of scrimmage. He's doing a better job getting his hands on, you know, on offense alignment and getting off of blocks. He's doing a better job with his hands. He understands the communication. The linebackers always have to be involved at the front. They can be involved and fitted to the back end. He's doing that. I think he's looking forward to playing in a game and getting an idea of what it all looks like. I can tell you in practice, he's playing fast, he's playing violent. I think he's a nice job of taking the meeting to the field, being very intentional about his work, but playing really hard.
He's the number one year now. Yeah, I haven't talked to Jim because we'll make that final decision here over the weekend, but he's certainly the leader in the club boss. Can you tell Ryan, I mean, Seth McLaughlin, can tell he's been there, done that. Has he projected that to the offensive line here, still, when I'm saying, I'm saying, I'm going a grown man. How does that just come up? How does that show up? A bunch of ways. It just poised. It's not getting rattled when, you know, coach parks at you. It's, you know, okay, I got this. Let me get it under control. It's seeing something in practice and being able to adjust on the move. It's being prepared when you walk on the field. It's recognizing how hard you have to play at the position. It's kind of all of those things in the one, but he's got great communication up front. He talks to the guys. He's moving quickly in there. And when you have experience like he has, you know, the game seems to slow down at times yet.
You know, he seems to be playing it at a fast lover. He's going to be able to see it. And there was a point where you got a black stripe off and I feel like you took a step in the right direction. When you come in in the summer, it is very difficult to get on the field, especially early in the season. Whether he does or not, I will see. But if he continues to practice the way that he's been practicing, then he'll give himself a chance to be in the rotation midway through the season. Or later in the season, which is similar to some of the wide receivers he had before. He didn't seem some of those guys get some reps really in the season, but then make an impact later in the season. I think that's probably more his path right now. He shows up and starts doing great. And you know, we'll give him the reps he deserves. Or like Jeremiah is in a different situation because he came in here in January.
And he was a little bit ahead. Anybody who comes in in January to me, I don't look at them as a freshman anymore. They've been here during the program. And we expect them to contribute. I'm still in there right there talking and communicating. But in the skirmishes we've had, it's been offense for his defense. So I've mostly been in the offensive side still kind of going through all those types of things. And there's a lot to work through this year just with the play clock. And then 20 minutes at his close by communication inside of 15 goes off. There's a lot of things to go on there. We don't really get notification on that. So I'm trying to just help chip with that and some communication that we're a personnel.
But I'm going to be very much involved with special teams. I think with a two minute warning, there's some strategic things that are going to go on. If you're in the half of the game, you know, you're never really being involved with. But to your point, just overall just looking guys in the eye and making sure that, you know, they have to right look in their eye to, you know, that, you know, they understand, you know, with the situation, what's going on in the game. You know, I think that happens sometimes in young players, you know, they're just like playing the next play. And that's not just how that's not how it works. We'll get to win the situations. And so all those things will come into play and making in game adjustments, you know, be involved with all three phases, you know, watching the game on the table to try to identify what happened in the last series. I think all those things will be happening. Right now, Nick is going to be the starter. And you know, that competition will go into next week. But right now, as we head into the weekend, he is the starter and the plan is ready to go first part of what we go inside against actor.
He's got a strong leg. He's made it a good transition into the country, but also just playing, you know, football and not Australian football, which is very, very different. The snap to kick has really improved. You know, that was one thing as a taller guy. So the ball has to get out of his, you know, get off his foot faster. I think he's done that his hang time has been good and he's been more consistent. You'll see, you know, he'll kick a few, but just go right out of the stadium. And you just have a strong, strong leg. So we're looking for that consistency. He's he's shown that here most recently. So he's got the upper hand right now. And last question, do we have a minute? Well, Ryan, I don't know if it's because Will maybe took a little bit longer to make a decision in December than some of the other top of the line quarterback you actually did. Or because maybe there was a thought he wasn't going to be the starter at Kansas State this year. But it seems like people have been kind of as a game manager type of quarterback.
After eight months with them, where do you see his ceiling? What what what is Will's special trait to you and where do you see them taking something? I see a bunch of traits there. I think the first trade of size is big. He can stand in the pocket and he's strong. So I mean, that's the first thing he noticed about him. Again, whether it's standing in the pocket with poise. I think that's another trait that he has. That's excellent. He he feels a rush. But he stands right in there. I think the next trade is just, you know, his top end speed. He can run 22 miles an hour at that size, which there's not a lot of guys who can do that. So I think that's the extraordinary. And I would I would say his overall leadership commands in the huddle is is another. You know, something that he's he's really, you know, grown into in the last few months when he's been here. And then his accuracy. He's been very accurate since he's been here. And when he knows what's going on and he can explain what's happening, I mean, it looks right.
Just feel it. And he can hurt you, you know, a bunch of different ways. So his ceiling, that's that's going to be kind of, you know, up to how he plays this season. But, you know, I see a player who has a lot of great skills that, you know, translates well to the next level. So we'll see. But I know his first focus is on winning games around here. Coach, thank you very much. I'm sure. Coach, you have take right. So, hold on. And then go along and down to the jacks. Please, meaning I'm nerves naturally. The answer is complete. I was good. I was rolling. Also, it was a weird. I was trying to try to play the last day. It was also the first start. Yeah. Um, you, yeah. It's like, I prepared well. And camp and practice all week. And I was, I was ready. Um, yeah. I have two multi year starters. I did a lot.
I mean, I could ask them, hey, what we got here, but I was prepared well. I mean, I was telling Jimmy and said, like, hey, we play our blocks. It will be emotional. It's like, what's the guy from Ohio? What does it mean to start a meeting? It was always my dream to come here and play and start. And having that like, I mean, I just like keep going, keep building those days, and go games and keep building. What a much younger Austin, don't you? If you want to be with us. No, not, I don't think. Even I told my life, like, may I ask about you at younger self, even committing. I wouldn't believe that now having a couple of starts. Yeah. Awesome. Has this happened faster than you had been doing? You were going to come here with the players. I guess you're technically a sophomore. You can play as a richer player. No, I knew that year two, I was going to see you some playing time. Now, starting week one, year two, I didn't see that, but like, I was ready.
I didn't spring ball. I knew I was going to play some soft games. What does it mean to you to, it's not only get the opportunity to play, but it's like you played well enough now. I think coaching staff trust you, you're basically different from that. There, whatever the situation was, but there aren't that. It's so early on in your career. I guess it shows like my preparation, my hard work, and just everything I've put into this, and I just finally show up on a field. There are moments, the top season, the end of the spring, and the end of the camp. I don't realize that you could play at this high level, I don't know what the ones, you know, if you knew you did. Yeah, the definitely was in training camp. I mean, blocking highly can tie every day. It feels a lot of confidence in doing it well, and not getting balled or anything. There is defensive tag wasn't that easy, but I was a bit nervous. Hero and Jason Moore in Taiwan, all those guys, pretty much anyone on the defensive line gets your face all the time. And Kay and Mack as well.
Yeah. I was a lot of them. I was more collected, how about the stability of them and bringing them along. How much can he help you in the next three or three days? He helped me a lot, and I'm proud that he's our starting center, not someone else's, but I mean, he's like the captain of the whole line. He's another voice on the line with guys like Josh Fryer and Josh Simmons, Donnie and Tiger. That means another voice and another captain on the line. And I'm with this much experience, help during the year in the middle of the season. I mean, a lot. He can tell you, like before the play was going on, how to block someone, like what you need to do, and it helps a lot. Tiger is talking about how calm he is, how much does that fit in between you and the guys who's kind of been there and seeing him. It makes us more calm, especially me and Tay, as our first start, so we were up here. And what he said, he brought us down, and we were like, five.
Our emotions weren't high. We settled in. Is that something he tells you? Is that something you pick up on by how he's acting? How do you kind of mean sense what he's trying to say? It's by how he's acting, and what I mean, him, when we're on the side of him, both Josh and Donnie, he was telling us, it's pretty cool, like we got it, but it's pretty much like everyone. Oh cool group. I said, how much do you do that? As a first time starter, how much did you end that? Me and a lot. That was my first time ever using iPads. We didn't use the iPads in high school, but I mean, you can say, like, try to remember the defense. You can just come on a silent and bring them, we'll play and get help up really soon. Probably the first or second, but after that, I thought we'd say all right. Awesome. Thank you very much. Thanks for all the play. We're in the best season. And part of me settled again to go. I want to say maybe I don't know, but I mean, when I'm pretty sure you got the job, I was really excited because I'm one of those guys who's the tempo.
I can run with the tempo. You know what I mean? I'm playing basketball all life in Southern football, and I feel like just the fast pace often, I'm going to run and really fits the guys we have right now. I'm really excited for that. I know you can throw a football at 65 yards, but can you kick a football? 75 yards of Lincoln. Probably question. Lincoln, what was your question? How is your room amp competing? He's a blessing, man. I can't keep playing. He's a great guy. What's his name? His name's Lincoln. Teen Hoes. Ooh. He's a cleaner. I think we're both really clean. We're probably trying to pick each other's roomies because we're very clean and we don't like our rooms really messy. Well, it's true though. It's true. They're both pretty clean, so. Luke, are you still a cross-training at TACO, or have you just been off guard this break? So far, I've been all guard. I really don't know. Like I said, I'm taking it practice by practice. I could end up being back at TACO, I could not, but you know, I'm just really focused in on this past practice and the next thing.
Yeah. Oh, that mean a lot. You know, you put a lot of work in to play here. You spend a dream just for being an Ohio kid, and from a Ohio kid's perspective. I mean, that's the biggest wish possible. I would say that's going to be pretty cool. What was it like to last year of first game getting on the field for the first time to come back here? It didn't fly. This is going to be a weird answer, but I feel like I was planning being there, if that makes sense. I was pretty locked in. I felt like just no anxiousness, no stress, no nothing. I just went in that first game and was like, shoot, I'm here now, it's time to roll. You know, it didn't really hit me. I was like, it didn't even hit me after, but my mom was like, what'd you feel doing? Like getting out there at the end of the game, I was like, honestly, I don't know. I felt less nervous at that time in high school, and it makes no sense. What did you see in the back of the school? What did you see in the back of the school? A lot. I'm learning from Josh Ann Austin. I think, I think, Friars, that's one of my biggest role models here, is my big brother, my first major.
Tell him I'm a PD, I don't want to say a PD, okay. Yeah, no. Yeah, yeah. So, yeah, PD, Ann Austin, those are my guys, man. I mean, even Miles too, I mean, all three of them, those are my roommates, and they're progressing every day as well on. And I'm excited to see where they can get to, and I'm excited to plan the field with them. Oh yeah, you know, it's been really helpful. You know, you just keep in my mind just settled in straight forward on the next blood. That's a great question. Like I said, I mean, I just need to say consistent in my work, I think. That's the biggest thing for me is just to ain't consistent and worry about the next blood. I think it's actually some other big runs you guys are turning out. It's hand plus red, but it's still a key off feature. Absolutely, I mean, when you see defensive, when you see defensive start arguing with each other and things like that, I mean, that makes it a lot easier, you know, to have those kind of 11 plays around something. What was that like? This was a question for me, starting to feel like you guys were feeling on that thing.
The first thing, I couldn't quite get my hold in, they've actually been second-hand. I mean, it was really good to rip off these runs because I mean, we put them so much for. I mean, I was in a record position to do, you know, seeing a brother, you know, that hard work. He's been in this position. Tech Reserve says that his offensive line-wise is young prepared this week with Donald back in there. That's all for the first half of the season. You know, it's not pretty canostin, it's just more of Donald and Jackson, pretty seasonal American, etc. I mean, enjoying the work, you know. Donald and Jackson is a very good football player in there. When he's on the field, he makes his presence tough. I mean, we've all been training on my own. If there's no margin, just go through and you know, be it the same, we know it can be. Yeah, there's seat to be, there's a sense of watching you guys last week. You know, or even more of a force, it felt like watching you guys. Maybe even if you know, you did it feel like that. Yeah, I mean, we put in the work during practice, we practice really hard. Coach, they're really challenging us, it's hard.
Positions, coaches really challenge us to practice. Sorry, I was just a result of it. But when it's grown like that, what's it feel like being in the mix? It's a long time. It's us, it's... When you work hard for something and you're able to see, like, what comes out of it, like, there's no better feeling in that. Hi, Graham. Can you show me what the harsh is? I don't know. Can you just read it? It's about the way you sway me. And I... No, I mean, I was really funny to see. What has Seth been off of? Brought to you guys for the first of the games. What's it been like playing next year for the last two? He's... You know, he's really calm and stormy. You never see real panic and having a guy like that next to you. You know, you're having really played as many meetings for snaps. I mean, there's no one outside rather apps and my left and some are right.
For our handset. Those guys, they do so much for this offensive line. People talk about his intelligence really kind of showing up in the film room and then on the field. Where have you noticed that intelligence and how has that helped you? Yeah, like I said, in French time, you know, when things aren't exactly looking like how we play. You know, having a guy like that, like, well, slow down. We'll do this, this, this. And then we're going to execute it. Having a guy like that like this, there's none better than that. Hero? What you got? I'm getting from this from home. What's my favorite cake? You know, red velvet. What about them? Yeah, I'm going to get it. Uh-huh, and now it's that. I almost came back with a couple of sun and this and more.
Tell you what, they're looking at Marshall. They got a couple guys with a deep pizza bread that has big tin bodies. Absolutely. What do you see when you look at their tape and see 15, 7, a couple of those guys are pretty big pieces of size. Yeah, those guys, they're real players. They're real players. And so they coach well, you can sell them. They go hard, you know, they're real players over there. We've been practicing to the best of our abilities, you know, and spectacular for that. You see, they play Virginia Tech in the last year. They're the other day. They take the, playing. Yeah, they play a good ball over there. You know, their defense plays hard. They, they challenged teams, you know, sometimes they might be overlooked and they still challenged teams. You know, you can sell they come out there with the mentality like no matter who's in front of us or when it won't happen. I don't know. This is just a good, good, good. I don't know how to do it. I would have been the biggest challenge.
Um, I mean, the actions right there right in front of you right now, which is kind of a good thing and kind of a bad thing. You know, you should, uh, should off the rest, you know, hidden back in it inside. You talking to your friends and you, um, yeah, I mean, I, um, I hear from Chris every once in a while trying to not to bother him too much, but, um, it's, it's always, it's always good to hear from guy like that guy's like the one, even Matt Jones returning back. All right, Tyler, thank you. Thank you. Thank you very, very good. This is a great, awesome, really special. Yeah, so thank you very much. And for this year, uh, just, uh, they were good to have that job. I'm just skills down. Yeah, I'm always good to have that. Um, I think it's a lot of things. I, my weight, my system, my height is more regard height. Um, but I'm fast on my feet and I'm just seeing these that you can sometimes like basketball or want to be on that just like defend, but you know, you got to stay in the stage where you're somewhere. Exactly. Yeah.
That's a great question. I mean, I feel like these two can enter that for the year right now. I think KJN here will get answered that. I don't know what to say about that. What do you most think? I don't know. I go and say, today, you know, this time, it's strong. Ready? I'm talking about like you have the basketball here. You sound like you could just do what things I mean. People come as really fast. Just to hope that I can get you out. And he got the grip. He doesn't give up on the playing. Like you said, he's going to go in and watch the film. He's doing it every day. You know, better than that. He should see it on the field. He's not going to have to stop you considering proving it again. Here, if he was far worse around, I'll be in the middle. He sounded like a coach, man. He sounded like a coach. He should tell you his influence. Change your mind about maybe like the idea of tackle versus guard. Because obviously his offense of predilection was for like, yeah,
the offense blind play, when he has seen the partly settling in the end of guard. I want to say maybe I don't know, but I mean, when I'm pretty sure you got the job, I was really excited because I'm one of those guys who's the tempo. I can run with the tempo. You know what I mean? I'm playing basketball all life instead of football. And I feel like just the fast pace often, so we're running really fits the guys we have right now. I'm really excited for that. I know you can throw football at 65 yards, but can you kick a football 75 yards of Lincoln? No. Tell me question. Lincoln, what's your question? How is your, your roommate at the beauty? He's a blessing, man. I can't complain. He's a great guy. What's his name? His name's Lincoln. Teen Holes. Oh, he's cleaner. I think we're both really clean. That's why we kind of pick each other's roommates because we're very clean. And we don't like our words really messy. Well, it's true though. It's true. It's a true. It's a real pretty clean stuff.
Luke, are you still a cross-training at tackle? Some or if you just been all guard this way? So far, I've been all guard. I really don't know. Like I said, I'm taking it practice, I practice. I could end up being back at tackle, I could not, but you know, I'm just really focused in on this past practice and the next one. What do you think? You know, I don't know. Yeah. Oh, that mean a lot. You know, you put a lot of work in to play here. And I spend a dream just from being in Ohio kid. I'm from Ohio kid's perspective. I mean, that's the biggest wish possible. I would say that's going to be pretty cool. What was it like last year at first game getting on the field for the first time? It didn't fly. This is going to be a weird answer, but it didn't feel like I was playing a game yet. That made sense. I was pretty locked in. I felt like just no anxiousness, no stress, no nothing. I just went in that first game. I was like, shoot out in here now. It's time to roll. You know, I didn't really hit me. I was like, it didn't even hit me after. I'm like, what would you feel there? And if like getting out there at the end of it, I'm just like, honestly, I don't know.
I felt less nervous than I did in high school and it makes no sense. What is it like to know what you're going to do tonight? What is it? What is it like to know what you're going to do tonight? It's just a shame. A lot. I mean, I'm learning from Josh Nann Austin. I think Friars is one of my biggest role models here. He's my bigger brother in my first game. I'm talking about Padia. I'm talking about Padia. Yeah, I'm talking about Padia. Okay. Yeah, no. Yeah, yeah. So yeah, Padia Nann Austin, those are my guys, man. I mean, even Miles too. I mean, all three of them. Those are my roommates. And they're progressing every day as well. And I'm excited to see where they can get to. I'm excited to play with them. Oh, yeah, he's not really helpful. You know, just keeping my mind just settled and straightforward on the next play. What is your biggest spot? It's a great question. Like I said, I mean, I just need to stay consistent in my work. I think that's the biggest thing for me is just staying consistent and worrying about the next play. To my game. And I was like, whoa, I never had that happen.
Like no other school, like just Ohio State field can't make it. And I was like, wow, that's crazy. Do you like, I mean, you're quiet, but also do you like that? Do you want everything that comes to mind? Do you want everything that comes to mind? I do, but at the same time, I just like to be a normal person. But I don't really like to take that. What was your feeling? Are you a showman? I mean, how did you describe this kind of like your art form? Yeah, I mean, yeah. I want to feel, I'm a little bit more chipmier. A little bit more chipmier a little bit, but sometimes I still require them. What was the competitive part of you? What did that, when did you know the set about yourself? Oh, I've been having that, I mean, since I was like eight, nine years old. You haven't, I mean, just high-end house, or it just to be competitive. That's the reason why chose to come to Ohio State. Just to compete each and every day, gets to go against the best DB group in the country. That's all I would say is if it had been in Hamston the last several months, I mean, you want to just, it's been nice and then, then so for, etc. Yeah, for sure, just going against them two guys, the best two DBs in the country. I mean, that's the reason I came here. Just going against God just going to make me better each and every day.
Yesterday, what you're playing the best on the street? Yeah. Yeah. You just said work. You played later, you called while I was at the morning, it's hard, I'm waiting. Yeah. You just said work that. I said, I said, well, he said, when he defed little boy, he said, I'm here. Okay, we'll be back. And that's something to be back then when I'm in a bit of play. I just, I'll just walk off. That's it. When you're in the corner, I'll just say, I told him, I'm coming back, right? What's it like to be back to the car now, say, bring us here as it needs to be back to the car? It feels great just us three to be on the field together. We're going to make a lot of plays this year. What are you learning from that? I learned a lot, especially from Carnail, because we both play outside. So me just learning from him and you know, the things he learned, he just teaching me. He was behind Mar and stuff like that. So he just teaching me the game for sure. What specifically you got better at that? And you can't compare to what you've heard Scott. I sent my footwork. That's the biggest game. Me and Coach Alon was looking at that's one thing I need to get better on.
So, I mean, I just worked on that in all seasons and just got better over time. What, what can still be a work ethic in here? Still my work at the end. I mean, just I really don't know. I can't really answer that. But it just, it just in me like I just want to work. That's one thing. I think I say I get it from my dad. My dad really the reason why I worked so hard. Because since I was like eight years old, he just wanted me to just work and be the best at what I do. So, I mean, I really, I say different my dad. Why do you see the clip of my day? You know, like on Johnny Day, when I'm on show. Yeah. Yeah. How close did you come to? I wasn't, I wasn't super out of, I don't know why. I could have made a scene like it was that I was a bugger. And that's it. How did your dad set me? He said a big example. I mean, just, I ain't got sales only just my dad. It was, I mean, I have a cousin's name. You know, it's very pretty for the Seattle Seahawks. So, I was, I looked up to him as well.
I mean, seeing what he was doing at West Virginia, would take my Austin and Steadman Bayley. So, I mean, he was a motivation for me. And it just, all the guys that grew up before me in a minor garter's area, and a brow area for sure. I mean, just looking at those guys. I say Brandon Enders for sure. He was a class ahead of me. So, I seen things he was doing in 8th grade. And I was just like, whoa, I mean, that's something I want to do. What do you think about the expectations for you? I mean, Chris Carter on my podcast, he was going to be, I think it should be a factor from the first play, first day, first game, et cetera. Those are big expectations. What do you mean a breakstops? I really don't, I mean, I know his big expectations for me because no one playing the country coming in and all the hype around me. So, I mean, I just try to block out all that stuff and just focus on the main thing, just the team, and I receive a room and a locker room. And no just first game come, if I don't see the expectations that you have for me. I mean, I don't really care. I just want to go out there and win a game. How much of a confidence do you have for you when people like Chris Carter,
Marvin Harrison Jr. are saying, this guy's maybe the next great receiver to Ohio State? I mean, it's something great. I mean, I just got to go out there on the field and just show you guys that I could beat it and that's probably the great Ohio State receiver to come through here. So, I mean, it's a blessing and have that, and that's got to go out there and play and show you guys. What do you think about that? It means a lot for me to be, was it the first freshman? Yeah, I mean, just, that's aggressive for me, for sure, just shows all the hard work that I put in and out of the main, on the way to the room. What is your majority of my dad really? I mean, the maturity, no just be older than, don't act my age, act older than my age. I mean, a lot of people tell me that I don't act my age, I'm way beyond my years. I mean, just, it just gotta be mature and, you know, act, don't act like a kid. What is the couple more questions for Jeremiah?
What is the about 50-50 ball? 70-30. What is the name of that? It just, no, when I see a 50-50 ball, I mean, just, I just think it's, I gotta make the play. You know, me, you know, no matter how the ball is, if it's a ball ball, I just feel like I gotta make that play, you know, no matter what the certain sense of this, no matter if it's a bad ball, I feel like the ball is mine, no matter who, in front of me, or, no, no matter what. What's your name? I got to get in between the ball and the fender come from them. I mean, that kind of sets you apart in my opinions, but all the way to the point. Do you always have that name? Oh, yeah, I did. I always had that name, because I was like, since I started to parents see you right, like eight or nine years old, I just found a way to, you know, make sure that ball is mine when it's in the air. I just got to always find a way, you know, find a way to make my quarterback look good. Can you say that I got to work? I already talked to my team, trying to say, go ahead and work more, thinking so more, what do you say? Oh, yeah, for sure. He definitely made a big jump from industry. I like his confidence. He's starting to talk more, talk a lot of men's on the field.
And I like that about my quarter, but I love quarterbacks, we like to talk and, you know, just get around his prayers and make them feel good about it, so. He talked on the field, you know, just, you just said a lot of stuff, I can't say, but he goes talk for sure. Okay, Jeremiah, thank you very much. Thank you guys. It was on me. My split was two, he wanted me to come my split down, so that I was, that was on me, that wasn't a good, I was. There was also that play aside. Clear that will be offense, the record is, if you're single about 401, you can't get a chance, man. They're willing to take that shot to you every time, were you expecting to have this big role in the offense, this room? Not at all. Not at all. Just coming in, no, this is a higher state, and just all the receivers that been here. And I was here before I got here, so I did not have no expectation there was having to roll that I had right now, so I mean, I just get all the things to go and then
just be able to be in this position right now. Is that so real to you then, to be putting up kind of numbers you already have? Oh, yes, for sure. I know a job, not finna still got stuff to do. Me, finna still having to do it. What does this have on the trust? I mean, he tells me a lot, each and every day that, if you're seeing a single cover, 101, I'm going to, you don't matter who or you don't matter. Just throwing it up, you know, you're just going to make a play. I was up to, you realize that you're pressing the other thing. Was there a moment of spring or just a drink camp or? I say, I say fall camp. That's really when he was just trusting me, just throwing it up, just going to go get it. Yeah, for you. You're, you're seeing it. On the play Saturday with the, you said you're supposed to do it? Yeah, to why, yeah. You're supposed to be working, what you've done, better, what is it? I should have cut my spit. No, I think I was, you know, like, part of my number, I should have been like, numbers plus, numbers plus two, I believe. Yeah, something like that. So that's the reason why he just played over top. And that's, which is the,
in a session. When you look at your numbers, you've made a history as a partial amount of high-estay, you're just looking at, to the whole coach, to the whole program. You feel like a normal parchment? I mean, you're an exceptional parchment for this universe. Yeah. National and as well. Uh, I mean, I love it. I still feel like I'm just a regular freshman, but you know, a lot of people say I'm not, but, um, I mean, just the role that I have, just coming in, is just, it's, it's been a blessing. I just can't, think, uh, can't say it's on me, it's on God, and just, the coaches were trusting me that they would put a freshman out there, and just to go out there and make plays, and just do what I do. You're hearing from your teammates, and it's a big role, and confidence in you, but you said you didn't expect to have, playing time when you came in. So, what did you actually expect? How much do you think you would have thought of? Uh, not that much, because you know, you got a card, you got a makeup, a book that I came back, you got a brand new, is that big of your, uh, Jettin Ballet, uh, all of them guys.
So really my mentality of just coming in, just working, learning, and making plays on special teams, a lot of mental tools, it was. You expect, uh, you expect this to be different, but big teams play, you're on the cards. Yeah. What do you expect to be different, not big teams, not big teams? Um, I mean, just watching them, they, uh, we've been attaining the last three teams in place, so I mean, it's gonna be, they've been attaining their health in the last couple of years, that, um, we played, uh, a higher state play, um, as we call it, they said, so, I mean, it's gonna be a good game, you gotta go, uh, be a higher state, as always, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, oh yeah, for sure, we hungry right now. Um, I can see in the air, everybody, uh, uh, everybody in office, officer line, quarterback, uh, receiver, we definitely hungry for sure. We ready to go out there, and has a dinner, and just put on the show. Austin Moore, the podcast, should you? I have to set up the, what would it know you more? Uh, being interfered with, not getting the call, or not being able to make the catch anyway? Uh, I say be able not to make the catch anyway.
Uh, I fly everybody, I'm throwing in me, I have to catch it, no matter how, if the defender owned me, or not, I just feel like, I had to make it play, no matter what. Um, I mean, I played Saturday, I feel like I could record it, but, you know, it was a pass in the front, but it touched my hands, I should record it. Uh, Dan, hold, let me worry. Jeremiah, there's a lot of, uh, discourse from fans this week about, you not winning the Sean Alms and the freshman year award, just, what's your thoughts on that? Uh, I mean, me calling is a great player as well. I mean, I was a great guy, I talked to him, uh, two weeks ago, um, it's a great guy, uh, learned a lot of, uh, things from him, outside of football as well. So, I mean, I really can't focus on that. And I'm just worried about, uh, beating Oregon, and, uh, just going out there to pass a deal, and just putting on a show. And, but, if anyone else has questions, Tom Moore, you mentioned getting bragged, and it's like, mission in East Dad, frustrating who we've seen at, from the follow teams. Yeah. Is that frustrating? Is that, you know, you and it feels like you always think you're over, right? Oh, yeah, for sure.
I'm still over, no matter if I'm bragged or not. Um, I mean, they just came out with a, a good game plan, a bracket me and a Mecca, and, you know, uh, I mean, just, you know, things didn't go as planned as we thought it would, but we just got to keep moving on, just move forward. As well. Steven Hellway did 24-7 sport. Did you mind that, the two touchdown plays that you had with Will Howard, how many times do you think you guys rep that to get, you know, those were perfect throws, the perfect patterns, and you beat your guy off the line of scrimmage, just how many times do you think, and what does it take to perfect that? Uh, I think we rep the least, I don't know how many times I've practiced over the weeks that we had off. Um, I mean, just came down to, you know, they pressed me, we, we taking a shot. That's what they told me, uh, the week we was off, and he told me, her before the day in the locker room, I just got to give you a shot, and that's what he did, and I just made a play. The first game to get historic, and just, how tough was that challenge against their secondary? I know you have the players that they're playing, and they're playing against their secondary, and I know you have to finally get into the game, but you guys made plays
all day long against them. Just what, what's your thought about the challenge those guys gave you? Uh, I say, the challenge is going to be, you know, a good challenge. They have some great global guys there, Jabbar Muhammad number seven, uh, Niko Rhee, uh, the other corner of my now and over there, they, a great global guys. Um, I mean, probably the best we go see all year, for sure. Um, we just got a good name, you know, Bio, Ohio State. That's all. Tony, you're a little bit. Uh, you know, probably when a whole team on me, I should say, uh, uh, I mean, I'm always open for, to me, for sure. Um, me just, no, throw the ball in my area, I'm going to find a way to make a play, as I always say. That's on christening, believe in dot com. You talked earlier about, you know, some of the great athletes that you got challenged and you aspired to be like, I guess, where's that confidence kind of confidence that, you know, you have the ability to be, you know, one of the greatest in this sport. Uh, I mean,
a lot of people tell me that I'm, I'm going to be great at what I do, um, since I was about, um, going to high school, a lot of people tell me that, um, me just, you know, football is all I know, and that's all I really want to do, like, uh, live, breathe, sleep, football, like, that's all I really care about, don't care about, everything outside of football, like, football is all I know, and I just want to play football, and to hold it, let it go off. It seemed like you had a vote, where we tried to connect on some of those deep balls throughout the year, you could be able to, finally do those, and at moment, that was kind of carried out for, or was it, was it the same on the way that you guys could continue to, do you think your progress is the chemistry? Um, I mean, just, you know, the weeks that we had all, we were just working on deep, deep shots, uh, because they tell us, uh, the media, uh, we have, uh, we got to take shots down, feel, um, we just got to connect on them, and, no, will tell me before, uh, before the games, then just give me a chance and I'm gonna make a play for you. That's what he told me and I just got to make a play for him. Adam, can you know what you're being asked? We can all joke, we can all talk about the expectations
and the starter that has become, you know, you were just 13 games. How do you handle that? I mean, you're just a freshman. How do you take all these expectations? Know when you step on the field that you're always open and still go out there and play? I mean, expectations, I mean, I can't know how you stay for a reason, that's what I wanted. When it be a challenge, I want the expectations, I should say, I mean, Coach Hotline just helped me throughout the whole year just preparing me for each game, each week, a Mecca, Buka, Cardinal Tey, Brendan Endes, really the whole receiver on just helped me. Stuff I don't really know about, it just helped me throughout the whole week. And I can't really say it's all on me because my talent is but they really been a big part of the reason. I'm having the season that I'm having for sure. Andrew Gillette, put it in the dot com. Jeremiah Over a thousand years, full session this year, first year. When you look back at your freshman year, what was the most difficult part about adjusting to the college game? What was the part that you had the hardest part about trying to train this one?
Learning that playbook. A playbook is certain else. Just coming in, spring ball, Mecha's new plays in every week, I'm like, what is this? This new plays every day in Coach Hotline. You go, you go be good. We got no summer fall camp. You go to be great. So I mean, just, you know, that's it. That's definitely was the hardest part just learning to playbook. And a lot of other things has to say for sure. How long have you been trying to get that down? How long have you been taking these so comfortable with the playbook? I'm pretty sure I got it down. I'm a part right now, but net season, I really want to learn everything, the H, Z. Yeah, I really want to learn everything in the playbook for net sure. That would be 24-7 sports. You mentioned how many guys it might take, because you did not feel those things. So when you are one-on-one, and Will's talk about what ECs you be one-on-one. What is going through your mind as you wind up and realize there's one guy covering you? Wind, that's all I could say.
When that's where Coach Hotline, we do something like in a hotel Friday night before the game. He asked me like a question like, you get one-on-one, something like that. He asked me, what do you do? I say wind. Everybody just start laughing. I don't know where I be like. It's true. You got one-on-one, up, out of the way. So, yeah. Are you familiar with the right-build landed teams of the North? Jeremiah, did you move to your round? Someone's going to send a seed to the point where you get a couple matchups against linebackers? What goes through your mind when you find yourself mashed up against a linebacker? I just start laughing in my head a little bit. I mean, linebackers can't really cover receivers like that. So, I just know like it's most likely going to be open. But they just try to move me around a lot because you know people try to bracket me when I'm outside just alone by myself. So, that's why they just move me around a lot. Or left, they will have been born the last year. Jeremiah, you mentioned the most difficult part of your freshman campaign has been learning the playbook. What has been the best part so far?
I mean, I think the way it's going to rub off on people eventually. And I would also say that, you know, you kind of have to understand who you're talking to. You know, people, certain stuff makes different people too. So, you've got to know your guys. You know, if you've got to get harder on somebody to make them go or if you've got to kind of relate to them. You know, pull them aside, have to talk. So, I think that all goes into leadership and you have to be able to, that has to be a skill that you have to be able to do. Coach Day, now that he's a true hit coach, you know, he's given up the like calling duties and all that stuff. It's been different about him. I want to say, you know, too much has necessarily changed, but you can tell the edge of tremendous trust in Coach Kelly. And what he's, what he's going to do in the kind of the schemes and everything that he's brought into our program. So, the fact that, you know, he has such confidence in him and his play calling ability makes us tremendously confident. So, Coach Day has always been coached to me and he's going to continue to stay that way. But I'm glad he's able to focus more on what he needs to focus on. Okay, I'll just, Caleb Brown's back to the question.
He's kind of a field general in a sense, kind of a quarterback on that side. A lot of people may think just, you know, the Mike Linebacker, we have Cody Simon, who does that as well. But, Caleb's kind of that for our secondary, kind of make sure things are clicking on all cylinders. He's just a very cerebral kid, very smart. And he's able to kind of take control of the defense. So, make the right calls, make the right checks. So, he's definitely annoying for the office to deal with, but it makes us better. Is that the case? In fact, do you have any way, like, where do you are? Where do you are? Do you have a word about where he is in the morning? I would say, in fact, the entire offense. It's not like, you know, we're not oblivious to the fact that the caliber player he is, but, you know, as an offense, you come out and you expect to execute on anybody. Who's lined up a question? So, that is the first catch. Who's the exact kind of way that's going to come? Yeah, I never really thought about it like that, but we definitely come a long way since my freshman year. They fall to the lower days, coming all these years, and coming head on straight and allowing me to, you know, develop into the person that I am now.
But, so, you know, coming full circle, it is really surreal moments of being my senior year painted this. You know, the cue flag on my first catch, and it sounds really cool. I remember Kyle getting yelled at. He was a ball. He was not supposed to throw. And I also remember getting pushed out of that like the one or two year online. So, that's kind of a bittersweet memory, but it was a great memory. I mean, I have to say, yes, if I don't think I should explore it, I don't think I should be playing football. I really do have a little bit of pain in your knee right now. Who's that? Mylin. Yeah, Mylin came in. He kind of has all the intangibles of her senior. You can tell he just loves the game the way he goes about his business. He runs every route to perfection. He's a very cerebral kid. And every time he gets on the field, he respects perfection. So, he's just got to continue to develop, continue to work. And I'm really excited to see what he's able to do for us. Look, I'm not just saying Jeremiah's name, I'm a row over camp to be able to put this opportunity in front of me.
Yeah, I think, you know, it's no secret that he has all the physical capabilities that you would want to receive or really any position you could play. Any position on the football field with his athletic ability. So, a lot of it for him was putting together the mental piece of the game. You know, not just understanding what he has on the specific play, but the whole concept. Understanding defense is all that type of stuff. There's nothing really that can get you ready for that moment for your first night in college, because it is different than high school. But, you know, once he gets acclimated, gets used to it. I have no doubts it's going to take off for us and do some many things. You know what you've seen face-consuming to bring the teams together? Yeah, I mean, it's been a huge part of everything that we've done. Been a huge part of a lot of the reasons why the teams came back and everything like that. So, we have a team by the study that we continue to do and continue to grow. I'm kind of just pre-sistered to the other gospel, to the guys on the team. And it's definitely permeated throughout the team throughout the years, because, you know, looking back a couple of years ago, there wasn't that many people on the team heavily into their faith. And a lot of people came to come, especially people who really changed the time and the time of our program.
But, you know, the Bible says, one man plans, the other man watches, but God ultimately brings an increase. So, we're just trying our best to stay on the against the Lord and he's done tremendous things. Who does choose special people? I'll say kind of the found, or I'll say of the team's faith. We're definitely master team for one, Cameron Bab and Xavier Johnson. So, those guys. What do you view as your responsibility as Captain? Really, what I view my responsibility as a Captain is just as a person in general, is to push everybody closer to Christ. And, you know, by doing that, I try to walk as close to Christ as I can myself. I'm kind of being that example, being that light for people to look up to. And, I think all the basic principles that are found in the Bible and in the title of the pursuit Christ, we naturally make you a better leader, a better person, better football player in a sense. So, I just try my best to anyway him.
Yeah, I mean, we have specific goals going into every single week. Some of our goals for this week is, you know, things can get sloppy in the week one. You see it all across the country. You know, false stars penalty is all these types of stuff. So, we're really just trying to be clean. Go out there, play a fast, complete football game. Clicking on and firing on all cylinders. So, by no means are you underestimating it and you're pulling it, we go out there on the field every Saturday, spitting the ball out whoever lines up the past from us. So, that's just our mentality. So, we're going to hold true to that. Yeah, very, very un-series guy, very funny guy. Kind of lines the room when he walking, when he walks in. And he's just, he's a true joy to be around. And you can kind of throw will into any setting. And he's going to get along with everybody there. So, definitely up the team chemistry locker room.
We love having him around. So, we're super glad he's part of this team. A line they were getting back there, looked forward to the football play. And we all expected that in the play come out at 8. We knew that they were in the team that paid the D&M. Like you mentioned, there was some past protect entries. A card and some things that maybe rushed the will on the plays. But when is the ball day come out? You guys were efficient in the passing game. There's 16 or between. What allowed the passing of action stayed? That prolific as even the off the fly will be. The ball just had to come out quicker and further. But I know we have to see that we didn't have them. The riders just had to get in that fitting hand. And they're all faster and quicker. How much do you feel like that game can be a building block for you? In terms of continuing to be a bigger, bigger party off that? Oh, I feel like each game, a building block. I stack each game and stuff like that. So that's I just made big plays and games and stuff like that. I just thought I was going to go to the block from the bottom. I don't know how much of line been working so hard to see the game. They've been doing pretty good. They've been doing stuff like that. New guys, new places and stuff like that.
We're all trying to pick up from the injuries and stuff. And you guys are the one game that's been swung to last. The other game is the top of the flagers. The flagers are the top in the back of the track. We did get in the box. It's not going to be wide on the back. You can probably get the safety. You get linebackers or the end. It's up like that. Whatever they need us to do. On your touchdown catch, so this is like a tough ball. A while has come down. They came. They're throwing into the wind. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. What's it like? Like I said earlier, but did you, did you figure the ball was going to be coming sooner or later this year to follow my trail? Meaning, you know, they've got three big time libraries. There's maybe four or five that could figure them. It would find you insignificant. That's significant time. Yeah, I knew it would follow my way. Each and every week, we have plays for each and all of us in the blind match. It really depends on what the defense gives us. The give us one thing that was kind of ball goes away from me, or goes come to me and stuff like that. So ultimately, at least not in my decision when ball goes. And yet you're blocking a state on point.
So like here, your blocking is at point? Yeah, our blocking from the wide open has been a big emphasis this year. We lacked that pretty much all last year. So they've been a big emphasis in the block on the tree from the wide open. Can we look at Vince made on video? What just stands out about there? Maybe that passed the fast one? But you're going to be personally up against them. They're pretty good fellow corners. They'll play a lot of them like that. So we got to win our 101s outside of them on the perimeter. I'm similar to today. I know you got to get them in the game last year. I'm similar to the cornerback. So what you're making so last year? I'm pretty much the same man covered all around. They got a little size on them. They feel like they all probably pretty much think that's all right. Thank you guys. Thanks for having us. Thanks for having us. Five guys, I'd say, back pressure. He's walked away. He kind of brings some good energy. Jason Middleton right there too. He kind of oversees Max and Bronco a little bit. So that's pretty fun.
And then catching. We all have some pretty good opportunities for catching. Especially practice we're going to make some good money touches. Very competitive for fish here. Definitely competitive but in a good way. We're all there supportive. We all know our strength and business. And we're all going to have to practice. We're working with each other and hoping to get better. We all know that we're moving to other for those years when we lost season. We all know that we need to be just a professional. So I'm going to walk out and say, if you're going to pressure for a lot of doctors, I'm going to do a very important push. I'm going to do a part of it. I need to be like, understand all of that. Did I do a push? Yes, I'm not. I'm not. If you're not, how some people can be powerful. If you're speaking with a town of over like that, I have a coach and I just feel on that. It's something that's taught in real life.
It was before doctors when I knew that. The records were just my first opportunity. Yeah, I was like, I was like, I was like, I was like, I'm wearing a new shirt. I was like, I'm wearing a new shirt. I'm wearing a new shirt. I'm wearing a new shirt. I'm wearing a new shirt. He's definitely on that topic. And I like that. He's on that topic. I think I'm on that topic. Yeah, I mean, that's what our unit is. We're talking about the toughest funding on anything else. We're talking about the first lesson. Yeah. Yeah. Where did we learn the way to bring it? Where you got that part of the topic? I would say we definitely have grown. What he started in this way. That's where this started. I just wanted to try and get it. For just, you know, going on. I mean, I want to really say I'm dealing with toughness. That's drilling and accountability.
It's right there. I mean, it's a lot. I start. It's not that difficult. I would say our Hindi, like, kind of drills with international toughness, because our English probably the toughest were just, you know, You know, full wraps. No, no, no. We're going to be telling this with the block. It's the end of that scheme. It's working myself today. I'm getting a lot to be in practice with. I mean, the school team is going to be going against me. This is going to be a good time. Yeah. Pat, how much is your home team family been a pretty great resource to you? You've been a football player here at Ohio State. I mean, being 20 minutes from home is pretty nice. And my dad playing here is a big one too. So just being able to go back home and spend time with family is good. It's something that I really do. How often do you go back? I would say probably once a week, or as soon as we get somewhere right around there, not that far. There's some different things.
Yeah, get a family dinner. Do you ever go back for any high school events or go back to being a wonderful schedule for men? Yeah. So you play for me a byweach or this week, I can go back. I'm going to be a good guy. When things ramp up from school, I'm going to be a dollar fast. You know, a couple of times. I, yeah, it does. I especially wanted to be a skiman, so I was going to be a little bit of a fan. You really are going to be a good guy. I'm going to be a good guy. I'm going to be a good guy. I'm going to be a good guy. Now that we're on this full much time meeting, what excited about getting on the field and playing meaningful football? Being able to grow, seeing the brothers to see it, and just knowing that all the work I will put in and do what will go for them. That's awesome. Are you a big guy who had on taking in the environment or you just fall business once you step out of the honest field? I probably said it's a little business. I kind of just kind of got my hair out there.
And it was really fun. But there's moments like when we had a big, romantic Notre Dame on the table and that was awesome. There's moments like that, we just kind of have to look at it. You're not going to have to look at it. Yeah. When you were when you had a record, and getting on the football snatch, and what kind of prepare for that for everything that happened for you, is there a way that you can get back in that moment? Practice. You know, play some games. Practice a hundred percent here. So that's when you take a journey. And then if you've been doing something, and you've worked on it, and the game of these just worked there about practicing what clothes are you wearing? When you're doing that, you have to worry. We're talking about the DDS, just being able to be more excited and working against that in practice. How do they push you as to having a better experience? A little quicker than me. So I'd like to get my hair on a little bit of my hair
and just have a big off of that. That, you know, their quickness kind of helps me get my feet on the ground. When you think about how many guys are having their own back in play, how might people like that eat? And what are they like? How many people are having their own back in the show? People don't know what they're having. I'm not listening to anything. Right. I think it's good. Well, I don't think I remember what you've done to make this year and set up a lot of season for the day. You know, we have to have a lot of time. We need different shows. We need to know what to do. We need to know what to do.
How important is the relationship that we need to be on that tomorrow? Good. Yeah. We're close with them. We talked a lot. How do we do it?
