You have to do extensive amount of research to be good. There are people that spend copious amount of money, time, resources, energy, they've dedicated their lives to basically becoming good at it. All that and still. And yes, two thirds of people on CalShe lose money. lose money. That's CalShe in their own CEO's words. Go to www.fairpredics.com to learn more.
As you go along with your spring practice. What have you learned from him? Just so for sure, I feel like in the recruiting process, he kind of let you know how he wants to coach all stuff. I feel like when you get here, it's a whole lot of level. He's going to keep coaching well. He's going to be hard on you. He's going to tell you what you're doing. He's going to tell you what you're doing along. And he's going to push you to be your best. They have to move all over. Yes, moving all over. What was it like for you to be here and see the team win an national championship in your first few weeks on campus? It was crazy. I feel like I knew that they were going to do it from the beginning of the season. I feel like they always had the potential. And then they came out here that did it. And the freshmen we had an opportunity to sit there and watch it. So I feel like now we just got to do it again. What did you learn from that? Just it's all hard work. And it's just a bunch of guys. And it's really a brotherhood. And it's really just our family versus their family. And we got to win the games and give back to the men. Our timeline was saying that Carmine Brand and the leaders and the ball.
What have they both been leaders for you and the young people? They've been leaders just in multiple ways. Whether our call them, we're in the film room together on the jugs. I'm asking them about this route. How I can run it better. I'm asking them how I run this route on this plate. Just many different things. I feel like those guys, they're like big brothers and all that Dennis. How valuable is that to have guys that are in the play line football, but also been a college for a while. So we're doing good to ask them various things about college life. How valuable. It's real valuable for sure, because they're their first round pit guys. So I feel like just being in a room with those guys. And if you're able to thrive with those guys, you know, some's going good for you. Where your impressions have been? What are the backgrounds? I guess specifically, Xavier. So my impressions are cool. What have you kind of known about him and learned about him? I had always had a good relationship with Xavier. He recruited me hard to come here. So I feel like we always talked and he came here and he's been doing this thing. They've all been doing their thing.
And Julian saying he's another Cali Kissel. I had a little relationship with him too. So good to see Julian, Lincoln, and Xavier all doing real good. What is that next step for you? What are the terms of evolution of your game? What do you want to get better at? It's great. It's great. I just really just everything. I feel like you can never be too perfect. And I feel like you just got to keep doing your job. So I say maybe just just showing up more and just doing my job to the team. Going against these corneries, these DBs, how does that kind of lead you better? That's going to be a different type of game. In high school, I had a five star corner DJ DJ on Lee. He's at Alabama. So I always had good work with corner. So I feel like it's just a lot. I'm going against a lot of good guys now. I'm going to say that it's just being one on one that practice with DJ. So it's real good for short. Does it take more courage to play the slot? Say it again, please. Does it take more courage to play the slot? What do you mean by that? Because there's more stuff. But I think there's bigger injuries inside. You have to have a thing.
You've got to be aware of it. But that does it. Does it take more courage to do that? I guess you could say that. I feel like I just always play slot. And I feel like that's what I've been better at. So I feel like it's just what I have to do to be on the slot. No matter who's in front of me, how big he is, how strong he is, I feel like if I got into Simon, I got to do it. It happens and we've got guys who are able to play anything. I've been like two weeks before your thoughts on the coach Patricia. So far. Man, I really like coach Patricia a lot. He's a big, you know, it's what can he do for you? Not what can you do for him? He's just trying to serve and help. And I've learned so much football in this past two weeks more than I've, you know, learned in my whole lifetime. So it's been great having him. He's a good coach and he teaches. And he's talking to me on the mic, telling me what I see and stuff. And it's just, I feel like I'm getting a lot smarter and processing things a lot faster. That's the difference for you coming out of last year with the injury and everything.
What it has to do with the injury and everything. What it has been like to take your feet under you and kind of get over it. I mean, it feels good. I was kind of just thrown right into it and fall camp. I thought I did a pretty well job, you know, just kind of getting thrown into the fire. But, you know, now after coming back this year and just things are, things click a lot, a lot easier. And I feel like this defense is everyone's clicking. And I'm just, I'm really studying as much as I can. I mean, I just live up here all day. You know, it's great having sunny and then just even like a guy like Cody last year. Just the level of preparation he had every single day was unlike I've ever seen. He knew what everybody was doing every single play. And so that's what I'm just trying to have trust in the coaches that I can, I know what's going on at all times. So I can go in there and do my job. What feels different about this defense? It goes for Tresher running out there. You know, you'll pick up on Mad with new on-swears when you think, what do you, what do you sense you feel? I think he's just, he's big into playing the player's strengths.
Like, if I'm better at this, he's going to put me in this position. And if I'm better at this, he's going to put me more in this position and just slow to that. I mean, we haven't really done much. It's only been two weeks, but guys are playing to their strengths and just getting better. I mean, that's just, and we're doing a lot of fundamental stuff, not too much scheme. Just, you know, working on tackling, getting off blocks, being physical and mentality stuff. Like, opening, he noticed two coach Laura Midas over years time, change a little bit. And it's teaching, where do you want to call him? He knows actually. Yeah, absolutely. I mean, I would say, Ryan, he's the best linebacker coach in the country. I mean, he knows everything about it, especially, you know, with Patricia being in the NFL. He's definitely, you know, he knows it all and stuff. So he's done good, man. It was kind of hard for him. I think it was a little hard, you know, because he was kind of just thrown in. Like, I was just thrown in the mix. He was trying to give me as many reps as I could get in the fall camp. And I'm really grateful for that.
I mean, it was hard for me. Like, you know, when fall camp kind of ended, my reps really, you know, cut down. But he did a good job of, you know, keeping me with the defense and watching all the plays and stuff and just talking me through everything. And, you know, we built a great relationship and I couldn't be grateful to have him as my best coach. How did you think you handled the last question? If we had thrown in the fire like that, were there any moments where you thought to yourself, like, I'm not ready for this. You feel pretty good for it. I felt pretty good. I mean, I, like I said, wrestling, you kind of get forged in fire. And so, I think it was just a little bit of that. I think the really the hard part for me was just, you know, just consistently waking up every day. And doing it, the mental side of it. Especially, I mean, you just don't know a lot of stuff. I mean, you had never done it before. But I wouldn't say the physical stuff was hard. I mean, I mean, obviously it was hard, but, you know, growing up wrestling and, you know, having older brother beat up on you a little bit. It went too bad. Did you see that? It seemed like you picked up more special teams with responsibilities, especially in the playoff.
Like, your staff counselies were hired. Were you doing more by that one this season? Did you hit the curve a little bit more? Yeah, 100%. I mean, I was kind of on all four phases just trying to do my job. And just show I'm accountable every week. And just, you know, guys will go down and stuff and stuff and up. And, you know, being on kickoff and kick return and get some power turn reps and even some punt reps. And I was, you know, I was really grateful to have those, you know, just being, even just being in the games and the playoff games, you know, seeing the stadium and being on the field and having a responsibility. You made a lot that they were willing to put me out there and they trusted me enough to do my job. Thank you very much. Thank you very much. Thank you very much. Because, again, I think, especially as an offense, that's really been where my mind's been kind of been kind of noticing the trends. As far as our offense can we speak on a lot of other things. But in terms of, like, just the unity off the field, I think, has been remarkable. Just the time spent away, I think. Obviously, they could have did all that same stuff here, but it's different when you get to take a trip somewhere to, you know, to go to UCLA, use a facility where it's not, you know, thousands of degrees or whatnot.
You know what I mean. So I think that's awesome to see them get together to do stuff like that. One of the off-season, then we'll can't be in terms of just being on the same page with whoever is ever next to you with left guard and establishing that continuity there. Yeah, I mean, I think just going into this off-season, I knew that. Just going to, you know, as far as who would be the left guard is, was going to be up in the air. So I think for me, just starting out, I took it something that was kind of important to me that whoever was, everyone competing for that spot, I wanted to create a bond with them. Because I feel like a tackle guard bond is important in terms of communication and understanding, because again, a left tackle is only as good as guard is and vice versa. You know what I mean. So I feel like I've done a good enough job so far of starting to develop that relationship with each potential guy. So that way, as we, as spot, as a spot is getting, you know, as people start to compete for that spot.
Again, I feel like I should be able to pop in with whoever and we should continue to keep the standard of the standard if that makes sense. That's my mindset. First, there's a guy competing for a spot and I've never spent any time with him just one on one during the summer and just taking reps before camp. Hey, what's coming to facility? What's who XYZ? Let's talk about this tape XYZ. Then they come in and then now there's no kind of flow. So now I'm not really seeing how that, how we're going to fit together, but I want to fit with as many people at left cards as possible that way when the decision has been made. There's no new startup process. I got to start over my process with this guy. It's kind of already been flowing. That makes sense. What does the problem mindset to succeed? I think that the mindset for me, as always, has been that when I win my one on one, the ball goes down the field.
You know what I mean? I think that's what I'm most excited about just being at left tackles that especially with the protections that are a little bit longer plays where the left tackle tends to be one on one or the plays I tend to love the most because kind of halfway through the play, you're locking them up and you just know that he can't go anywhere. Start to smile, but you're like, oh, dude, balls gone. You know what I mean? Like balls gone and it's going to be a touchdown. It's going to be a huge gain. So I think for me, that's kind of the mindset you kind of have to have to have the left tackle spots that as soon as I win my rep, we're going down the field. So that's just the mindset I have in terms of how well I have to prepare. Honestly, I'll say that mindset kind of came from college. Again, obviously I played with a lot of great guys in college. You know, glad we have on those guys here. You know what I mean? To throw the ball to as well just because against one of those things like with CJ, you just again, a left tackle, my mindset was just let CJ just do his thing.
I want Kyle to be able to do his thing. Don't worry about whoever's over here, just do your thing. That's why you're here and just throw it to Marvin. And you know, it will be and will be good. You know what I mean? So that's something excited about. And I think all that starts because of what we do on the line. So I think just not just myself, but the entire room takes pride in. Hey, like when we do our job upfront, that's where everything else goes. So let these guys we have with the ball in their hands do all that all that magic. We just got to do our job just to entertain it when you're one on one, you know. Just playing that spot means something special just because of the history of that position and, you know, just of all the greats that have played left tackle. I mean, do you ever think about just the past and the, you know, the people, the players before you who were in that spot and did great things? Yeah, I mean, again, I feel like just from just as a young guy in a game, I of course try to, I like to watch the the greats the game. I like to watch guys like.
A weight worth, of course, you know, will the Anderson, you know, he played on the right side, but again, I think continuing to watch the greats that play the game just can take the dominate for those guys from me to be able to talk to them again to be able to. Learn from their story and their journey and how they developed, of course, I understand I want to create a I want my game to be able to be like there's no way to where it's talked about in a way of like that's a guy you need to watch just to watch with, you know, the fight that you played with the finish that you played with the technique you played with because those guys played almost 20 years. You know what I mean? So, and again, I think that's something when you watch the guys though, the legendary guys come before. Yeah, you know, they're strong and they're tough guys, but, you know, I don't know, but when you're like 36, 37 years old, you probably not that strong. Not as strong as you used to, but that technique and just the skill set that's something that I admire. You mentioned earlier about the guys going out to UCLA and kind of getting on the heat. I'm curious, when you're working out here, do you do anything outside or do you avoid it altogether right now?
I don't know, I'm always outside. I'm always outside. I don't mind the heat. I love the heat. And honestly, for me, it helps. I'm off like 320. So I kind of warm up quickly. So it's kind of nice for my warm up. I don't have to be doing like 30 minute warm up. You know, you kind of just be outside long enough, collect this. And your joints are on go. So I actually, I like it. Going back to the players that have been in the league for a while, Calvin Beachham is one of those guys that's been in the league for a decade plus. What have you been able to learn from him? I think, again, just learning how to be a pro in terms of certain things. For example, I'm a guy that when I like to train by myself, I'll just take a thousand reps of a set, a thousand reps of a reach block. I'm a rep, rep, rep, rep and type, I've done a hundred times and I wrote perfect. And some of that beach is like talking about in terms of being a pro and I thought to me, that's me being a pro is a young guy. I pick up a lot of reps in my body. So I'm going to take a lot of reps and preparation.
But beach is a guy where it's like, it's not about necessarily the quantity in terms of it's really through the quality. But, but even more so, he's like, you know, off season, you don't got to be doing something like this every single day. But when you do it like from your first rep, even your first rep is not like here. I'm taking this rep. Oh, it wasn't good. It's going to be better on the second one, like each rep, even when you're by yourself is just kind of, I guess a mindset, I just give yourself 15 reps instead of doing 60 reps. You know, sounds like a huge difference, but then you out of mind taking 60 reps from by myself and there's nobody that's waiting around on me and I'm by myself, I can take my time and I'll do that, just being like, I'm going to do 15 perfect reps and I'm just going to slow down and take all my time. Stuff like that that way your body, I way or not, you're not, you're not doing too much before camp, you know. Many of the guys that left guard in the mix were here last year except for Evan. How does that relationship develop around other agencies?
Yeah, I mean, so honestly, I like that. That's my guy. We like to compete. We've been competing in the weight room since day one in terms of just like what we consider like athletic competitions. So like even in the weight room, I'm at the very end of the week when we're done lifting. I'll talk to Evan, I'll be at a standard, we'll just do some sort of competition, whether it's grab or whether it's John, where it's pull ups or something. And I don't let him leave until I beat him in these two things. So if we do, if we do a jump thing and like I always thought was the best kind of, I had the most height when I jumped out of a line, I could dominate anybody and that, but he beat me in that surprising size of art. I know what happened on the bike and then we did this bike thing, I beat him on a bike and now we're going pull ups. Talked to beat him on a personal kid, now we can leave. You know what I mean, but we just have that that in words is always just competing. And then again, obviously, you know, he wasn't on the team with us last year. I think what he brings at the table with being a vet is that he's like a plug and play guy. You know, he knows he's been in those scenarios before.
He's played with guys like Penae when he was with Detroit. So obviously, he's just being able to talk to him and how this is how it was when I was setting with Penae. This is how it was on the same C-hawks. These are the different things that I can do that made some things like in your game, how you set. And I'll talk to him about what I like to do in certain scenarios and how his set can sort of match that. That makes sense. So I think he adds a lot. What's the longest you've stayed after until you beat him? To the point where a strength coach is like, you guys got to go. You guys should go. You know, we're not trying to break any rules around here. But you know, but it's just me and him just going, and he loves it. So and even us starting to do that, we started to get other guys in the O-line that tried to hop in on our competition for fun. But only matters what be Evan. It's just fine. I'm just beating you. You know. So it's fun.

I'm sure you've seen the highlights of the first book in Dad career. I mean, how can I... I'm sure you've known, Orlando. Oh yeah, I know. I've been on the line. Like walking here and seeing him all over the wall. Oh, yeah. Seeing the link said, seeing the space on the walls is so great that it's really awesome. Can you say that? Just to say that. I'm just saying it to you. At least, that's what I'm saying.
What are you doing to appreciate your work? I'm just saying that you can be a little bit more dynamic. I don't know how to get to have some absolutely different experiences. I think it's a different experience. I think that's a good quality. And I'll kind of leave you behind again. Oh, actually, the tight ends have been super welcoming. The G.H. Sean and Chris Cneadevich are super welcoming. They've done a lot of things. And yes, I guess the pretty end process. I don't want to rock them in. And you guys did a huge, but I don't. I have a coming out of the house. Every one of you guys is showing us the average action. So it's very, very hard to talk. So it's more adjustable. Maybe they really need a couple of options. One of them. They are. And it's a whole thing. The project is about that. You look around here, I think. You just create a new scene. Oh, absolutely. You just have to sort of do a few things.
I'm trying to move to earlier. This is a bunch of guys in the center of the road. You know, it's not that much of a job. At first, I thought it was. I want to see you just play football and everybody see that. Just like you can't hold on here. I'm sorry. Somebody will know that sometimes. It's ready before you have a new mind. I'm going to hire you to tell what's there. They should be reaching out the minute. What were your expectations? I'm very willing to make that. Good. No, I'm touched on it earlier. No, you're good. It was a hard process for me, my friend. I entered into the lady. She was a success. She was a success. I'm really. I'm the other player at the slammer. I just didn't know where he at. As soon as I entered the portal, he's going to eventually be punching all over. I was serious. I didn't even mention how friends were trying to do that.
What did you think? You put on that? Absolutely. You put it in the out-of-the-face? No, I believe on the self-respect. I believe anything that takes good care of the player. I think it first down there. A.R. I play hard. I like to get my nose dirty and slow-proof. When the conversation... I don't know how quickly it goes. In the interest of you, I want to give you another world to hear what you're role in. What happened? Is that part of the initial reshootment? Sorry, did you put that? What is your power? What is your power? What is your... What is your... What is your... What is your... What is your... What is your... What is your power? What is your... What is your... What is your volume? Is that wait or on? What you're getting? Yes or no? Nothing is giving for you? Are you really working? I mean, you definitely come home at a point in time. It's not really coming. You're going to come to the left with something to... Bring somebody that could potentially fill in at all. Find your job going. Nice, nice, my role as far as I'm here, and...
I hope I can look that out. You said you feel that I'm a good player at this level. How long have we talked about this? When you think I come out of high school, you just have to buy your time. I was really surprised to hear that. You know what I mean? No, I knew since high school that I had this thing in me. The recruiting process was really difficult for me. We had time with COVID and stuff like that. And I was blessed with a lot of work from Ohio. And I was completely to work there. And I'm still sorry. I went higher for that team. And then, all you said, it was a million people sitting in the portal. I tried to make that next level where I thought I could have done it. What was that? I'm sure a lot of guys went through that. We were in the beans. I'm not getting the exposure. I should be getting it. I know what's happening in the world. I was just looking back and getting what was going to go through that. I think it's funny to you or how could we do it?
You got to where you wanted to get your ear. It was a different path. It was really exciting and very stressful process. But like you said, this is the path I got here. I don't know if you know how to do it. I just really should be here and I'll start. Where would you say you made the most right-wing school you said? At Ohio, like, you went there and you better not work with that. How much better before you are here now coming here? What area is it here? My first one here, I was red-shared. We had a really good time at that time. I was on scout team. That's where I was just every day I was putting the work and the treat that I like my game. I felt that's where I got acclimated to the college level. One day, my sophomore year and this past junior year, my junior year, my sophomore year. It was really where I made my impact on the field.
I thought my coach would leave the knee there. I love all those coaching down there. They are awesome people. They are great programs. They put a lot of faith in me. Back in that news, they tried to make plays. There's a little girl besides Ohio State. There's a head in fear. There's a couple of schools in the SEC and some big high schools. I was on the Ohio State really come by and I'm a coach. I'm a coach for the board. I was really curious to do this anywhere else. I did not know. Well, it's real good about the way you deal with the field. It's just getting to the field and getting to the field. The field is a certain field. Oh yeah, absolutely. Nothing's given to me. I work for every evening at the boarding time. I work for the boarding time. But that's what I was going to do. I was like, what's your strong spirit?
What's your world? Yeah. Hello, Ralph. Yeah, I love lockings. I feel like that's one thing that I could separate myself. Really from others. I love that. Some of them lock in here in the past. I'm just putting some money in there. Yeah, first week, I mean, actually, it was probably not about somebody that, but it looked like I'm there to settle in. And I got to know a lot of the guys. And they were really good. How about the boarding work now? Good. Oh yeah, they're easy. I just had one. I had a pretty solid one. Yeah, I'm feeling good, though. Yeah. Oh yeah, I know. I think they have a little bit of password. So, I'll say big things about each other. It's really cool.
It's really cool. Do you see this at the moment? Oh, absolutely. It's a big thing. It's a big of the trade rules. That one is a blind. You have a corporate home. You don't have this question, do you? Yeah, they're both young guys. And they're super person-like. They're not like coaches being like a treat them like. They make a treat me like. Where the bike would buy you a truck like that. That's a really, really, really like out through a tight-known bridge. And they have a really good purchase. Yeah, there's a whole of these. Where is it? I'd say it's super similar, especially locked and wide. Like, I'll try the same job done. Resources might be a little bit of a difference, but I think it's been somewhat... What do you think it will be about the people with name watching you play here? Just...
How hard I go and just like how our college is. We just finish blocks. They just play with people. That's the goal. It's just awesome culture. The culture is super simple. Yeah, he's interested in that. He's interested in the reason. It was a little rough in the game. I know a bunch of people here, but I want to start welcoming them. And now I'm just going to start. I feel like you and me and you are all prominent in the other hand. Yeah, I think everyone's different. We're still sort of people. So it's probably a little bit more interesting. I think it's a little bit more interesting. I think I still have some people. It's probably a little bit more studious. I'm excited about it. Really like those guys. They're really cool colleges. How much does the game play against this? That can be one big one. How much does the game play against this? Oh, it's just one of the best defenses in the country. I think that'll be awesome for me. It's just how I can use the game.
It's like working on something best to do. I think that's a best thing to do around the country. I kind of understand that we also have a lot of things to do. Do you like the time? Yeah, I think it's always quite different. There are some people that stay out there. There are some people that stay out there. Yeah. What is it like for you? No, I think Athens is an awesome place. I mean, again, they are in football country. I think that's a great best level possible. But I love that. I love that. I think it's a good place to just college. I mean, it's close by when trail visits here in the New York University. And yeah, it's just fun. I'm just going to play the game in the Chinese club. Can you tell? Yeah, I can tell. Can you tell me? Can you tell me? Can you tell me? Can you tell me?
Can you tell me? Can you tell me? Can you tell me? Can you tell me? Can you tell me? Can you tell me? Can you tell me? Can you tell me? All those guys want to pass away at the place. Like, they're really good people and really good coaches. And they're just going to stand in the mud. All of their heads are sitting in the mud. I don't know if they're going to sit there. Yeah, here you go for the message. I think they can get you in all sorts of different ways. So, I think that's where you're going to go. So, I think you're going to be the reason. You're going to be the reason. I'm sure it's something that they can take from the back of the state. Also, it's something that they can take from the inside. Right. You can get in there and you can get in there for a second. But how do you think it's really easy to do the game? You can do the game to be something. Well, I haven't got the play in my life. So, I'm still up for it. I just have to injure, but just like the culture and the author and stuff like that,
when the same thing was going to take you going well. A couple of things. Yeah. First of all, it's a precious goal. Awesome. Awesome guy. He's super friendly. He came out and reached out to us when we're out. He's throwing out skins to make sure we're good. And then he's always wanting to get the best test of us. And make sure that when we talk about stuff, it's really easy. I just wanted to ask you to walk in through 24 hours to get the best side of it. Yeah. So, I was a late transfer portal. I was going to load a lot of stuff. My family was just that when I was auctioned. I was pretty stressful when I entered the portal. A lot of cultures were regional. But I'm honestly just going to get out of here and have the culture and things. They're so exciting. That kind of culture is really interesting.
And that is what I'm going to do. That is the best. The city was so high on the left. It's very traction-based. This is going to play a cultural role. Well, it was honestly just opportunity. I was my only home friend in high school. I've coded a lot of stuff. And I'm super grateful. We're behind the best. And I'm going to leave. But yeah, that's why I came out here. Yeah. How was it? I was a little bit sick. We were in a condition. I was a little bit sick. I was a little bit sick. I was a little bit sick. I was a little bit sick. I was a little bit sick. CalShe's own CEO says it himself.
And he has two thirds of people on CalShe lose money. So what does it take to be in the other third? You have to do extensive amount of research to be good. There are people that spend those money, those money, those money, those money. That's CalShe in their own CEO's words. Go to www.fairpredicts.com to learn more. Hi, this is Dave Roberts. There are people that spend copious amount of money, time, resources, energy. lives to basically becoming good at it. All that and still. And yes, two thirds of people on CalShi lose money. lose money. lose money. That's CalShi in their own CEOs words. Go to www.fairpredics.com to learn more.
I've been aware of some of the work that continues to deliver. Let's go. Thank you. Oh, yes. I'm going to ask folks like learning the program, learning how we work here. I kind of feel like a freshman. So I kind of have to get on task and figure out how things work here. And then once I earn the respect of my teammates, then I can continue on the leadership role.
So right now it's a lot harder. So I can tell you that when you had conversations on the phone with my friends, what is a thought? I get to talk about how I can point you to do something that's not cool. I'm not really sure about that because I came here just as an offensive lineman. I didn't really come for a specific position. I mean, there's a lot of talent in the room and I'm just going to try to fit in the best where I can. So you could get an athlete in a list of cards. I'm not sure. That's up to the coaches to decide. But I am here just to help the success of this program and whatever the coach has seen. How are you getting all of the guys and how do you make money? I really like Will. Will is a great guy and he's had a coming of experience and he'll be really excited to play with him. What's better being a treater than a treater being a certain player? Neither. I hated the recruiting process. Kind of in both sense, you know, the transfer portal period is so short. I was home from the Rose Bowl on Wednesday, I think, and I was up here Thursday.
And then I came up here like on Saturday. So as an enrollees. So that was really quick. But yeah, I've never really been a fan of all the hype and the who run of the recruiting process. Hey, Seth, I think a lot of people in this stay now, the portal. How do you go from being a true Alabama player to come into a higher state and go in? I'm a fuck right now. And not just you, but a lot of other players who are transferring in the portal. I think I did the advantage of being there for four years. You know, I love Alabama. I have two degrees from Alabama. That's always going to be my alma mater. And I so appreciative for everything that I've done there and everything that's been given to me there. But just as a, you know, we're playing the sport to be professionals. And I've just thought for my benefit that change would be good. But I am very thankful for everything I was received from Alabama, their fans. I love them. But it's just going to be a fun new adventure.
Are you looking forward to playing in the shoe? Yeah. I think one of the craziest things is you know, playing in all those SSC stadiums and growing up in the SEC, I really never, I was never really a huge big 10 football watcher. So kind of getting to experience this type of culture and see the love for the game up here. It's been fun. It's been colder. I did grow up in the South. So some of the really cold weather I've never been used to. But I get hot easily. So I don't love the heat. How do you do that after you're in the middle of school? What was that for? What was your role at the young man? And then get to experience the sport? You know, when you go through something like that, you kind of have to sit down and look at yourself and be like, okay, who am I as a person? What am I? And I kind of sat down and thought about, you know, where can I go from here? I can't control what happened in the past.
I can't control what happened in that game. I can't control, you know, the public reaction to that. But I'm here now. I'm in a great place to continue my development and play for an incredible program, play for incredible coaches. So really, I'm very positive. I have no negative feelings about what happened. You know, it is what it is type of thing. So it's exciting and important. I have to be confident that I have a good school experience. I have a good center. And that's what they remember about you and that. I've started, I forget how many games I've started. I've started over 20th Center. But I'm open to doing whatever it takes to, you know, help this program when football games. Do you believe in giving back kind of games often on campus? I play tack on high school. That's kind of like every single offense alignment in college plays tack on for their high school program. But I practice guard a little bit throughout my career at Alabama. But really, it's just an interior offense aligns kind of all the same.
Did you, after that, a Michigan game, did you check your social media off? I mean, you know, you pay attention to what's going on out there? No, not really. It doesn't really affect you. It's kind of the thing about social media. You know, I've heard that, you know, somebody patch your back. You can't listen to them. Somebody, you know, knocking you down, you can't listen to them. Because at the end of the day, nobody out there really knows exactly what goes into it unless they've been in the position. Hey, y'all, it's just over time from the table. You just walked up to the U.M.A. And I have to look. What do you think you guys playing at Alabama in stealing you? It's maybe a little different from the average guy. What do y'all bring to this program in that regard? I think playing four years with Coach Saban is tremendous for your personal development. You know, having him talk to you each and every single day about what it takes to be a man, what it takes to be successful, I think it's a lot of people in the country regardless of profession would pay a lot of money to have that experience with Coach Saban, his leadership.
Do you imagine that you're born in Florida and you're a student? What do you learn about taking some football, the tradition of the Latter-East, the history of the Latter-East? It's tough hard to notice football from what I've gathered so far. It's been very fun to just talk to the guys and hear their experiences and talk to them about my experiences and just kind of look to see how it's different, how the goods in the van so. Did you think you could do football with my friends? I don't believe so, I'm not sure. I'm not sure if it's the quality of the football team. There's a suggestion out there of the F&C if you only thought you could come to football. I would be the most important factor in gathering those. I mean, good football teams are good football teams. They're built on toughness. They have the size, they have the talent. So, kind of when you get to those games, you don't really tell them because all good football teams kind of resemble each other in some sorts of ways.
What do the kids like? What do the kids like to make their first career? What emotions do you have in the game? I think you have the experience of what you've done and you know kind of what works and what coaching styles you're more of that too. So, when you talk to the coaches that's really about how can you make me better? Not necessarily how can you develop me into the player that I need to be from where I was. I was like 6'3", 260 pounds coming out of high school. So, that was really more about what can the weight staff do, what can the nutrition staff do to put the weight on me. But now it's kind of just about developing as a football player. He's a very impressive guy. He's very intelligent. He's smart. He's played in a lot of games.
He's a big 12 champion. He's won championship games. So, kind of going and playing with a quarterback that knows how to win games was a super big thing to make. That's my main goal as to win football games in my 10 years. What have you noticed in the focus around here in the first hour when you've been here and the players can't point up all these guys coming back for another shot? What's your good at you about the atmosphere I guess about finishing the job? I think it's impressive. I think it's a testament to the culture here. In my two short weeks I can tell how much guys love this program and care about this program and care about their legacy. You had so many guys that could have been drafted this year that came back. I don't want to speak for him, but it sounds like it's because they think they have unfinished business and they want to win all the games and they want to leave the legacy. It didn't factor into my decision at all. It just wanted to come because really whatever happens now it doesn't matter if you don't make it to the NFL.
I wanted to go to a place that could put me there. I was excited. Been watching Caleb for a year now at Alabama and he was very impressive. He walked in and he acted like a third year starter. He was a veteran and it's very rare from a freshman. He's one of the most impressive freshmen I've ever seen through Alabama. I didn't really get to watch a lot of him playing football. He was over on the other field just with the quarterbacks. But from what I've heard from the other quarterbacks at Alabama that I'm really good friends with is that he's a great guy. He's very talented. So we're excited to have him.
I came to college before and I always think so it was literally not a topic. But it's a part of the world we live in today and it's something to think about for some people. That's what they're interested in but I'm really just excited to be here in Columbus and have the opportunities that football presents. I think he brings a ton of experience as a great coach. He's had a proven track record of being a good coach. In our time at Alabama he put up a lot of points. So it'll be fun to watch what he does with this off there. I think the most important thing is a player for coach O'Brien, his pro background. He expects you to handle yourself like a pro. He expects you to prepare like a pro and anything short of that he's not a big fan of which is understandable. Could you notice the insight to gay people about the game?
Let me just move a little bit maybe you're around him. He's been in the NFL. I mean, you know how that show up? Not necessarily how it would expect you to be. It's from a game of landing at the back of the show. He knows who the guys are and he's going to get the ball in their hands, you know, whatever it takes. They had a kid that couldn't snap the football and it was my first time walking out there. They were like, okay, I might as well try this guy at center and the coach is most of them incredible if they could tell that I was going to develop into a college center. So I still keep in touch with my nine year old football coach and he kind of takes credit for putting me in that position in his foresight. So that's kind of funny. But when you get back football at that point? Yeah it was. Kind of just being the guy up in front making the calls. I like doing that. I like the intellectual part of the game.
I'm a student of the game so it's a lot of fun learning and trying to, you know, kind of get everybody on the same page. That's what I like about it. I'm so proud of all the young people who are doing college, especially in traditional, working in school, getting close to the past, taking part in college. Now it's... CalShe's own CEO says it himself. And yes, two thirds of people on CalShe lose money. So what does it take to be in the other third? You have to do extensive amount of research to be good. There are people that spend the copious amount of money, time, resources, energy, they've dedicated their lives to basically becoming good at it. All that and still. And yes, two thirds of people on CalShe lose money. Who's money? That's CalShe in their own CEOs' words. Go to www.fairpredics.com to learn more. Hi, this is Dave Roberts. You have to do extensive amount of research to be good. There are people that spend the hope you spend on money, time, resources, energy, and their dedicated lives to be becoming good at it. All that and still. And yes, two thirds of people on CalShe lose money. lose money. lose money. That's CalShe in their own CEOs' words. Go to www.fairpredics.com to learn more. Kind of just based on instinct. You know, I don't necessarily know the whole picture, but if I look in this sandbox over here, I kind of know what's everywhere else. So once you start learning the game, it kind of becomes more instinctual. Hey, I'm not trying to think of thorny right now, but you know, once we gave me a
like a fetch from the home, you know, there's some flow snaps in that game and he was able to handle it. And I'm here and still want to say that the center somehow filled through a little bit of a rut in the shotgun and that and the physical snap. The other just kind of have to get out of your schedule. Not really. Yeah, not really. I mean, kind of it just part of playing the position. Yeah. You know, if you're a point guard in basketball and you're not hitting your free throws, you're not doing what the team needs to do to win. The Creed Humphrey is one of the best centers in the game and I can't, I can't talk about what was going on, but I mean, it didn't really impact the game. But you got a lot going on in front of it. Something that you're going to need for a snap is a, I mean, I mean, concentrate on that snap before anything else. I mean, the snaps just part of your instinct. It's just getting the ball back there. You kind of don't really think about it. You can just throw the ball back there and without how many reps that you bank, you've got thousands of thousands of thousands of reps. Usually it's just going to go back there straight. That's, uh, that Alabama right here interacting with me. Maybe you can't look at the faces for a few years and then take your official position here.
What about Justin Bryan? What about the stock out that makes you feel like I need to be here to help them try to win that. Just their plan and their excitement for winning. Coach Day has been incredible to talk to. I didn't, I wasn't recruited by Ohio State out of high school that much. So getting up here and seeing everything for the first time was a very telling experience. And Coach Fry sat me down and had a good plan for me. And that was exciting to hear as a football player. I know you were in football. I know you were carrying out a lot of things in my school. How long have you known him and if you talked to him at all, I talked to him a little bit. I just asked him about, you know, what he knew about Coach Day and Coach Fry. And he had nothing to positive things to say. Did you talk to Ohio State every, every local Alabama? I mean, you know, it's very interesting in Ohio State where there may be anyone else. Yeah, it was. And I was kind of attributed to my first, uh, it being my first visit. Yeah, they were very proactive about, you know, as soon as I entered the portal,
one of the first people to call me. And they were very proactive to getting me here and getting me here first. And then just knew the process of how important that was to do our short time constraint. I know Adrian Houston went to your high school as well. You know him and what you're talking about here. Um, he was a eighth grader, I believe, my senior year. Did he show his stuff for them? Yeah, he was, I mean, he looked, he looked the same size as he was now. I felt like as a senior in high school because he's always been a huge guy. So I'm excited to see how he develops and how he brings the culture of Buford here. I was like, it's more of a composition. You know what I'm saying? Not like, not any hits of the DB. I'm, I'm, I'm 230 going against someone who's 205. Right. You know what I'm saying? I'm expecting to win. So I love the composition. I asked him, yeah, Cody said you came in and said, well, he's already bigger than most of the line. Are you playing Will and Sam?
How was the position? I've been working on both, yes. Is there any, like, fundamental difference between the two in terms of both? So the same thing. Um, I mean, obviously the standard more outside the box, outside the linebacker overhang. You can walk up on the edge on the tight end. Will's more inside the box. I think the biggest difference from Sam and Will, Sam, you just got to be more outside sometimes during the slot with two. You know, but I think it's similar concepts because you do the same thing in the boundary. It's almost more like the San Francisco field and Will's at the boundary. So I think it's pretty similar, honestly. The only difference is that Sam, last year I never really was an interior run fitter, like in the A gap, you know, going A to B or whatever that, whatever that might be. So that's a little different. But I mean, I think I got some of that experience at safety just from a few yards back. So like I said, the only difference really is now just adjusting to less time. Yeah, Coach, how's it coming from where you're coming from? You have a better perspective of what's going on because you played safe.
Yeah, yeah. I feel like I have a great understanding of the defense. I think that safety I kind of already knew what the linebacks are doing. So now what I'm really starting to learn is like exactly like every little detail what the D lines doing. That's not really what I didn't know every little aspect of it. I think I'm starting to learn that now because obviously the linebacker got to be knowing that more. So I think when it's all said, no, I think we have a really, really, really good understanding of the defense and knowing exactly what everyone's doing. So you feel like you're warm enough to afford the mix of the defense too. And that linebacker is having a sunny case. You can drop in one minute pass rested that you or me. I think some of that anyway. Yeah, actually said that I think you can say it would be an online backer in the play. You're almost in every play. Yeah, obviously the play can run away from you. But you know, it saves you sometimes you're just back there playing every guest. You take two back pedals and it's a tackle. So I think yeah, a linebacker, you're in the play more. More chance more opportunities to make tackles. Do you feel comfortable there? I mean, what does that, you know, obviously your fans stand out like that? Yeah, I feel super comfortable with it. Like I said, I think it's just going to be adjustment. You know, obviously it's different playing from a five than it was from playing from like 10 last year.
So I think it's an adjustment, but I'm super comfortable with it. So any of you top here, dad, have you any advice on the new position? Oh, yeah, we watch table all the time. I watch practice. You know, he was a high level linebacker. And I'm just getting started with this. He gets a little bit of footwork and stuff like that. But it's good. I get good teaching him, you know, obviously coach Lord Knight is great player, great teacher for him, coach knows. You know, he's a super smart football mind. So I'm getting great teaching all around. You know, linebacker, everything happens quicker for you. How much did the experience playing some of that sandwich got faster? How much did you help with this? I think it helped a little bit. It's been like in terms of physical like being in the box down on the line. But I do think the the run fit as a will and the Sam can be a little different. And like in terms like I said, like being an interior fitter, like your 30 backer, when a you get pools, like you got to go spill it, so things like that. But I think I'm adjusting well.
I think I'm picking up on stuff pretty fast. You know, this is going to be a lot of stuff for working on though. Do you feel more pressure talking to the media with your brother sitting right there? Not at all. What do you think has been the biggest change from linebacker to safety blindbacker? I think the biggest change will probably be that that's 10 to 5. Because it's a big adjustment because everything's happening faster and you got to react faster. And like I said, the waist and movements, I think footwork is huge. I think when you see the great linebackers, seems to play happens are going. They're not taking any wasted steps or not fall stepping, things like that. So I think wasting, wasting movement and being able to see what's happening, react fast. What's been the biggest benefit of being on the same team with your brother? Um, I mean, you know you got someone out there that's, it's more than a team. You know, we call each other brothers, but you know, bloods, bloods and little thicker. So that's always pretty cool. It's always, it's never 101. Yeah, but when he tells you something, he doesn't observe that, you know, it's coming from.
Yeah, I think when you're blood like that, I think he's not scared to tell me the truth, you know, son. Obviously guys here, we have tough love, but I think it's always going to be a little different when it's your brother. Because he going to keep it 100% blunt exactly what you need to hear and know what you want to hear. What's your advice on playing Dickel? Oh, for him? I mean, he just so I've let it hit you. Just keep trusting his instincts. Now, I think he's going to be great. I think what's huge for him is like I said, the athletic ability speed. You know, he blitzed off the edge. He blitzed super fast. And he's just great in coverage too. So I think something really good. I think we'll do a lot of different things kind of like you see a hand caught. Obviously, a little different body than a hand caught, but I think he's going to be really good at once. He's essential in that field. He needs his time. Thank you. Great. Yeah, so with Coach Lockland, I mean, I've only been around him for a day, so I don't really know. But as you can see where he's coaching, how he is as a person.
He's very high energy. He's very intense, you know. And I think he's very hands on. So I think it'll be awesome to be working with Coach Lock. What's your opinion of soft fats cookies? I think you're going to have to hand it in the first meeting with you guys. No, not yet. I want to use the Florida City with a new format. I'm in the direction we have. A lot. So we're from the same city. We have him from the same place. At Florida State, you know, he worked on that staff with Coach Johnson. And they offered me out of high school. So the relationship was already there then. And we just continue to build on from then. What is it? What did the Indian and the offer? It meant a lot, you know, just the things that we talked about since I was young, growing high school, you know, just didn't have that opportunity to go and play there. So it's awesome. Coach, what's the rest of the spirit look like for you? What do you want to see yourself get there? Yeah, just to continue to improve all around, you know. Continue to learn the offense and get involved in everywhere that I can on the field
and just be able to improve my game all around. I know we were only in here for Saturday. We haven't seen you guys practice a lot. So you come out of the backfield and catch a touchdown. That's from Will. Are you just pushing to continue to get better out of the backfield? Where do you feel like you are as far as learning the offense and being a basketball-trucker? Yeah, definitely. That's my goal to just continue to improve everywhere. But I think just overall, it's just helping the team anyway that the team needs to be helping just being a team player. That's my deal just trying to come in and, you know, help the team wherever the team needs. How did you guys find out? I don't even know. You talked to you guys about the game. Actually, I honestly don't remember how I found out. But I just remember the process on what we're going to do moving forward. Ryan Dees talked a lot about the leadership Travian's brought to the running backroom to spring. What, how have you seen that? Yeah, definitely. Travian, like I said, has improved. He's been a leader to the whole room, you know, by his actions and vocally as well.
Just, you know, continue to improve all around and inspire the young guys in the room. And I think he's done very good at that. And Coach, they were saying that, you know, T.C. Caffees, a guy that can contribute to you guys as well. What have you seen from him as a walk-on to be able to contribute to your room? Yeah, definitely. T.C. works very hard. He knows the offense. He's always in the playbook. Always in the meetings, writing things down. Very head down guy. You know, he doesn't really talk that much, but he's very good. So I agree. Oh, it's like so many questions. How's that? How was Coach Day like his rain back school? It's crazy you say that because he just told us he was like, well, guys, it's probably my last week with y'all and I'm out. But Coach Day has been awesome. You know, he's taught us a lot of different things, as far as scheme and different positions that he's coached overall. And, you know, taught us a lot of different things that we learned overall. So it's been awesome. I know it's probably unsettling not having a position coach for two weeks, but what did it all have? And you have like head coach in that hands-on with your group?
Yeah, definitely. It meant a lot. You know, the half-course day in those meetings, teaching us everything that he's put in and implementing it into our game and showing us how he specifically wants it. It was really good to have him there. You just tell about it in light and yellow for the looks like a quarterback. Right. What do you remember taking away from this game? Yeah, it's just really like not only looking at it from a running back perspective, but also as a quarterback as well, looking at certain reads, certain blitzes from other players, and just looking at it all around from the field. Can I ask you a second ago, was the list any ramp through the game time? You were the fastest in the game. Yeah, actually, I don't really remember, but thank you. I'm pretty sure you are. You were the only one that faced the game. Yeah, definitely really comfortable. Like I said, I've been improving to start this year, coming here, just improving my game all around. What's the biggest question you're playing in the world? Is it pretty quiet today? Is that disconcerting? Are you waiting for our likes? I'm waiting. I mean, he's giving me a lot of feedback today on practice, different plays, what he thinks, what he's happy about.
But I think the energy is going to come soon, so I'm excited. Did you get any props for your blitz pick up on that best of the German I never was freaking out about? Oh, yeah. I did. How were you without party games? When blitz pick up? When blitz pick up, I can do that feeling. Yeah, pretty solid. Like I said, just improving my game all around, that's the goal. Continue to build every day and not be the same player that you wear yesterday. So that's really my goal, but I think I've been pretty solid at it for sure. Alright, Quenchon, thank you. Alright, thank you guys. No doubt about it. He's still a bit on leader. Him and JT are real close, really, really close, but that front four guys have been here. Ty. Calci's own CEO says it himself. And he has two thirds of people on Calci lose money. So what does it take to be in the other third? You have to do extensive amount of research to be good.
There are people that spend copious amount of money, time, resources, energy, they've dedicated their lives to basically becoming good at it. All that and still. And yes, two thirds of people on Calci lose money. lose money. lose money. That's Calci in their own CEO's words. Go to www.fairpredics.com to learn more. Summer's full of reasons to look your best. So what does it take to be in the other third? You have to do extensive amount of research to be good. There are people that spend copious amount of money, time, resources, energy,
they've dedicated their lives to basically becoming good at it. All that and still. And yes, two thirds of people on Calci lose money. lose money. lose money. That's Calci in their own CEO's words. Go to www.fairpredics.com to learn more. And Tyler, they're really close. And they're pushing the guys. And that's what you want to see. So I would say those four guys are our leaders in our room. And they're pushing off really, really well. You're not a chair. You got a Jason Ford that makes you sick. I mean, he's 65. He's 295 pounds. He's an ideal three-tech, you can art system, right? And just some matter, you're going to have him confidence and play it. And sometimes you get his bigger than you think it is. And he kind of shut your back. Now in the spring, we're challenging. And I'm just telling you, he's every day is a good day for Jason Moore. And that's what we want to see. K-Mac, the same thing. There's a lot of guys doing well that we really like what's going on right now. But if a guy that's making a jump right now, we'll see Jason Moore. The earlier we used to talk about the first two years or on us in the third years on that.
Except there's a, with those ends though, it's Canyot and Caden who got two third-year guys who no fault of their own. And you already said it, they're kind of flops. So how do you approach that as a quote with guys who, when they were looking at this, on like, their year, a big opportunity was going to be here. And now it might not be quite the same shape thing. Again, I think it's good by Tissier early on, right? And then KJ came back. And then the guys could all go and report it if they wanted to because those guys came back, right? But they all want to be part of something special. And I think that's what separate us, who we are. And the fact that KJ and Caden care and everyone, they're like what they want to do. They just want to play ball and come back and be the best player possibly. And step to the rows. And their row this year is different. It could be a very long season. So we're going to need those guys. And I think they're embraced that when they came back. So that's a good thing about it. What do you mean by plan A might not have also been for both KJ back to still be here for the year? Mm-hmm. And for four years. So you're probably grateful that they are, but team time, are you looking at this, like, what else is left on the tables for them? We're working. You hope to be here. Well, I think the biggest thing they're doing at Chase and greatness right now.
And I mean, being the best player, it can be in the college football. I think that's what they want. When I asked the GM show, you know, to team up North. Those are all great goals for those guys at Chase. And I think that's one of the reasons they came back. You know what I mean? You go through your player, go in and out. You might think you're ready. But when you got four years on your belt, you got your two box ready to go. You got a chance to elevate your game when you're walking in that next level. And I think that's where those guys looked at. How can I get better coach? And every day we're working on the small pieces to make them elite players. And I think that's what we're enjoying right now. And you can see the difference in the guys. And that's the positive what's happening right now. What is your challenge, Kim Young? What is the challenge? What is the challenge specifically about this free or really this thing? The proof or wherever you want it? Just being consistent. And so about being consistent. You know, he's tough. He has all the skillsets. He can bend. He can run. He can tackle. He's physical. He has all that. Now can you be consistent in doing what you're supposed to do? And so far, he's done a good job at that. And you can see him coming out of his shell a little bit. Kind of trying to be a leader. And I like how he's going on. So he's getting carried. I mean, those guys are right where they need to be.
And I'm just happy that we got to move on days to practice to get ready. What's the next step? I told you. But in the next step, you know, obviously, it's the play to best gaming and play every game. That's the key to going into it, right? You're trying to be a lead player. I mean, Tal has got to give it, but to be a lead, you got to choose that. And every day he day out, we talked about that. You got to choose greatness. Because there's no fall on the way from this. And I mean, so just a little things. Just fixing all the little things. Larry, you've been asked about Edrick and his recruitment. Now he's on the field. What have you seen from him through a few practices that make you think that, you know, not to put the expectations on him, but he's almost asking me next time. Yeah, I hope so. You have a good time to go. It's a growth process. I mean, those young guys come in. It's like he should be in the classroom. You're going to go to the problem now. You know, I mean, he's here. And so he's got to go through a Gordon stage, you know, I mean, how to play hard. Playing hard in a high school and playing hard in college. Two different levels. I mean, it's this full speed of Ed. I mean, so he's going to learn how to do that. He's got the skill set. I mean, he's got the physical skill. And now he's just learned a game that played a high level as fast as he can.
Do you make sure to shepherd him to JT and Jack, okay, make sure to pay attention to these things. Well, we don't have to shepherd her clothes. They are already standing next to him talking to him. That's a good thing, but I grew. They coached a young guy really well. Really well. Where? With the tightly-knit tie being able to play Irish hot and close. Who that is your third guy? Because he could be. Anyway, you have an idea. Well, you hope that K-Mac can give us something. You know, come out. I think he's having a good camp. And Jason Moore, we got hero canoes done really well. And you got Taiwan in there. And then we got a battle between who's going to be that next-piece guy, where it's a little smith, or it could be a freshman. So we don't know yet. But I like the four-by-yard right now, and the system we're moving forward. I think it gives him some options. Where's the hero in K-Mac taking the biggest step? He's being. Where have hero in K-Mac taking the biggest step? Well, they're just playing a game, more knowledge of the game, how to play a great football IQ, and just continue to work on our techniques. And that's never going to stop. But I think that's what's happening right now. Is there something Kaden can give you with the one-tag sort of being that, you know, space heater, maybe an explosive first step that, you know, there that spot?
Yeah, yeah. He's a nose guard, and he's powerful. We like to see him continue to bring his weight down. But he's a big man. He's very strong, and he can handle it a centrum really well. And he gives the idea of a nose guard. That's what we're looking for. I suppose a guy, a big guy in the middle, just kind of managing the forest. Now that Taiwan has been here for years, where's he at? I think I said earlier that I think now that Groph is there. You know, baseball is behind him now. He went through a learning curve, lies here, I thought, just trying to play football again. Now you see how to make some steps. And I think going into the fall, it will be able to help us in the fall. What's that learning curve like when you're playing baseball in dedicated time? Well, it's technique, right? You're just on a football, you know, eyes, eye discipline, how to get off the ball, how to get off blocks. All those things take time to learn how to do if you haven't done it before, right? You know, I mean, it's like, difference swinging a bat and hitting the guy in the mouth, you know what I mean? And so that's the difference. And you've got to learn how to do that, yeah? Who's there? Who's there? More of the learning curve there. And did you see something change last year and you're getting gone up the graph? Yeah, for earlier on, it was struggle for me because it was all new to him. You know, even though he played football, but he hadn't played football over two years, three years.
It was all baseball. And so just basically learning the game, understanding boxing scheme and seeing all, it took time to do that. And then you saw it in a season, started to do a good job and started to understand it. Now with spring football on his belt and last season, you can see the difference in him right already, that he's starting to learn how to play the game. Where he's trying to lead for an all-time career. He works in the system. Hmm? He got there right after. No doubt. What's the next step? What can you see? What can you be? Continue to do what he's doing. He's working real hard right now. You know, he's working real hard. He's lack what I thought. He was going to be coming back in the season where we're big. You know, there's still more. You know, he's running to the ball full speed every play. He wants to be great. And when you have that in your mind, you know, everything's everything. Everything's a challenge. I do bring you in a coach for a long time. And having a group like this is a special feature here. How much do you say, Mr. Chair, just how much do you... ...rest on yourself in maximizing your career? I tell you what we do.
I've challenged myself every year as a coach. How can I be better? You know, you know, how do you do better? You go back and watch what you did as a coach. I watch every single play all over again to an off season. And then I find things I think I could do better as a coach. That's my job. Right? And then I take those things and we work to crap out. I'm very fortunate to have some real estate and great coach. And Coach Clark is a great young coach who's coming next to me. And we barbed BT. And now we have all these eyes in the room of all my guys. And I think that's make us better. And so that's what I'm looking forward to. We meet every day about every single guy, every technique, and finding ways to make him better every day. And so I think that's the key for me going forward. Just make sure we do that. We don't talk about... What's it like having a coach on the set? For your stops, I mean your stops. You know, you know, you know, you know, doing this in 129, 28 years. You know, you never had an opportunity to do a watch and play. He was a jetman at Penn State. But it's pretty cool. It really is. He wants to be a nice one to be in a long time of getting. I kind of talked him out of it, you know, because it's a coach and thing. But then finally he said, Dad, this is what I want to do. And so, you know, thanks to Ryan. We had an opportunity to put him on the staff.
And he's doing really well. He's doing really well. He loves football. And it's part of his gene. So to be able to chase your dreams real smart. And you're going to cool back. You'll see him do it. We got a couple more questions. We don't talk about tie as much as we talk about tie league and a jacket. Do you think there's a reason why he's a little underrated? I don't see much other way. Tie is a hammer. Tie is a physical player inside. If you watch his play from last year, there's time where he was just... We call it Bob-a-Dowdy. He just took it in the center and just shaking his head. Very strong, very physical. And the thing that we did well last year, we tackled well on the inside. And that was tie league and tie. It was a really great job. Mike really did a good job. He managed in the middle of the other tee-fights. And tie to me is a sleeping giant. It really is because he makes us go. He makes go. He's smart. He's a leader. And he knows exactly what he wants to do. And I love that about tie. We've asked about a lot of different guys. How do you balance town? Do you have a top-end? You said definitely have behind it.
You know you're trying to figure out a rotation. Also know that it's gonna play on the top. Yeah, no doubt. And that's what we're talking about. You know, a chance to play 17 games. We've never done that before. And so early on this season we may play a lot more young players in a situation to make sure we get to the stretch, right? And I think our older players now understand like what we're up against. And the thing I would say to you that we don't have jealous season in Rome. We don't have that. We have a bunch of guys that want to win. And if you can help us win, I want you to help us win. That's the attitude in Rome. And so they understand that we have to go into the season. We have to rotate. And we have to do our own in the season and get a chance and get to the back end of the season. We're gonna do what we want to do. Not rotating last year. Was that more about the top end of the room and how good those guys were? Or maybe some more show guys like you and Yall and Kate and not best there? Oh, no doubt about it. Yeah, you know, quite ready last year to throw those guys in and say go battle. You know what I mean? You gotta be smart. You know, I mean, you don't want to put them in a situation where they have a handicap. Handicap being like they fail. And then everybody down. You could carry that. And I'm really good about not putting freshmen in a position where they're a chance to win.
I want to be successful. Now those guys have no doubt. They have their own parents. Now let's go play. And that's what we're gonna try to do with the season. What do you think about the college work? What do you think about it? You get to it a question. Who's asking? What do you think about asking your college roster to tolerate the 17 games in the schedule? There's never been done before. And so it's gonna be tough. We have to find out. Ask that question in the season. And I mean, right now we don't know. We just know it could be a long season. But Larry, do you have a good idea to cross-strain JT and Jack at the outside line? I think it's great. I mean, we do a little bit at now and I drop eight. We do a little bit at now. So it's not a big deal. You're gonna rush the squad and they do that right now. And just a matter of change in the front on the inside. I mean, that's all. We haven't gotten there yet, but I know Coach Noah is interested in trying to spear around that a little bit. Is that a response to trying to find something to match up against an obstacle to find the focus? I'm not sure. Yeah, that 12th person now. 13th person, 14th person now. Now you've got to chance to match up, play bigger guys on the field.
You know, you might play three tackles on the field. And then two big heads. So just a way to kind of offset that a little bit. Yeah, but we're not there yet. We haven't put it in yet, but it's a thought process. Experience you have with a lot of these guys. You can start for a few more years. Is there any situation you're coaching for? You've had that much experience. Only once when we had the Sam Hubbard, Jalen Homes, DeBosa, Chase, that group. That group was really, really veteran group. Now we did a lot with those guys. That's where the Rushman Package came. Because we had to get those guys on the field. But these guys are, you know, I like to, I like the guys are back. But I like the young guys who started to go, because they can see what it takes to be great, right? And so there's a great example of those guys. Just imagine those guys who love, they'll be a lot of young players from Learn for Young players. And so we have a bonus right now that these guys are all back. I think that we're getting out of here. That's right, we have more depth now. Is that correct? Yeah. One of the questions about the Rushman Package, I think, last year there was time for Chase, he believed inside, and it was time for Jack and Lincoln inside.
What do you like about those two guys inside in the Rushman Package situation? How much of that is just, we want the experience guys to look inside there? Yeah, he really is just a match-up. I look for a match-up, right? There's a guard that we think we got a great match-up for a Rushman. You know, we want to take advantage of that. So we have to look and see how we go through the season, how much we can use the Rushman Package. Or we know we have PassRush and just how we're going to use it, put the piece together. And we'll figure out as we go on. Coach, thank you very much. Appreciate it. Thank you, Larry. Thanks guys. Thanks. Thanks for having six. We grew up in the same park. We played in the same park, so we're a real close family. We're family. How many people? I'm two years older than I am. Did you have discussion with them before you came to the Rushman Package? Yeah, I had a discussion with him. How close are your pitch? You know, he's so smart. You came for Sweden. So I wasn't even talking about recruiting. It was just keeping that connection and just keeping going and talking. Because I knew at the end day he was going to make the right decision. I'm a little good at it.
How much are you going to make right now? He's a huge difference maker. He's always had those lights on him since he was a little kid. So this is nothing to do with him right now. So in fall, he was going to start everyone that he's really like that. And make a name for himself again if people just didn't remember. Do you think you'd play some on the outside this year? We saw you kind of line up there a little bit. Are you expanding what you're doing? Right now, I really don't know. It's so far away from the season. I can play everywhere. So that's how they can use me as safety. They can use me on corner. They can use me on neck, so really anywhere, I play anywhere. Kalshi's own CEO says it himself. I know that's pretty much what you do. Just a brotherhood, you know, everyone was coming back and saw him. And what I look like just going and leaving. I just want to leave out of here to a nice, reserved ship. We just left so much behind. I feel like our class came in one of the best class to ever come through Ohio State.
And we need to leave out of here with something. So that's why I came back. What did you know that you were going to come back? I kind of knew just after the board game. I was going to come back because you've seen everyone. And we kind of, before the board game, we all had a discussion. And we just want to come back and finish with our Angle or National Championship. What was their kind of feeling like? We've done a lot. We're here. That's all individual decisions. It's also a group decision. You know, we had individual decisions, but we had to leave out of here with something. So I feel like this in the year we finally knew all the other things. It was like conversations. It was both. We had a conversation. It was a conversation. He's had a conversation. During last year, we were talking to Coach Moles about that split kind of thing that's sunny.
It was maybe early in the year, maybe half a year. He was still almost kind of into meeting. I like, well, if you're talking about it, it's sort of a different thing. Maybe that's a group that's exposing you in a way that you didn't want to. But then having to replay that full time down in the second half of that last year, what did that do for you? Do you think it made you a better player than you were coming out of this? Yeah, definitely made me a better nipple. Just learning from sunny, put me on with a lot of game and stuff like that. I've really had to flip my mindset from just playing corner and then just playing nickel. But now I just want to be the best nickel in the country. That's kind of my mindset right now. What is the biggest difference between playing one of those new positions? A lot of run fits. You got to be in the run fits. You're guarding quicker receivers in that slot. That's kind of the whole, it's two different techniques from outside and inside. I've been really working on it. If you see last year, I got a lot more comfortable in the slot when I was kind of like the main slot.
When I kind of focus on it and it's just my game elevator from there, I just keep on elevating and I'm just excited for this. What's the specific work you've been doing there to get better? Oh, just catch technique. Just not giving as much ground and wine as damage and stuff like that. What do your vantage point, what's it been like to see sunny in the second level of the game? Oh yeah, he's a dog out there. You can see there's a huge transformation with him. We can go out there and play yine. This is so much versatility. I'm just happy you've been able to change. I know Lorenzo's been playing some nickel with you. What kind of growth have you seen from him? He's going a lot. He's always in the film room. He's always going to go hard. So he's going to be a great ball player down the road. What do you have to do when you're a very skilled corner now you're in this situation where you're talking about what fits. That's just part of what you have to do now. What do you have to do when you're playing in there? Is that something you have to get used to or how did you... Oh no, I've never really had to get used to most people at corner they can't go play inside.
I just like eating. It's just something about it. It's just a natural transition. It is pretty crazy, right? When you're playing in there, you have to be physical enough to play the run. But then you have to be quick enough to play all these little quick slot receivers. It's crazy. That's why I feel like it's the most fun position on the field. So add a gain a little bit more weight in this offseason to bring more power into it. Because I got to take office of guards and tighten in every time. So yeah, I had to gain some weight. I feel like I've gotten a lot stronger. I think it's a gain that weight and keep your foot down. Right. Which is like constantly trying to strike that balance, right? Yes, sir. I feel like they're sort of mixing you in there. Like last summer training camps and training before the... What did it feel like you were starting to pull the embrace in like, I love this position? I want to make it. Probably, I fully embrace it. It was like, was constantly, you know, I played a lot of... I was going like, playing reps and all of that.
But then, late then, he got injured. And so that moved something to strong safety. So I had no choice. I'm just really happy to play that position. Like I'm thankful for it. You've forced a bundle of that. Yeah, of course, if I'm... I had a lot of production that week somehow. It was like a night game. I wanted to make plays out there. Jim said that you really stepped up at that point during the season once. Late then went down. You say that that week is when you really had to like, embrace it fully. And then how much did that game spearhead the rest of the season for you? Like give me that confidence that you can handle all that. Yeah, it was crazy. I think that whole October, just from October to November. Like I'm here. I had a really crazy stretch. Like almost every game in October. I had an interception. Well, I just kind of dropped one, it gets Michigan State. But I feel like every game in October, November, that's when I was selling out a position. So how much does the guy like wall help prepare you for that kind of switch in the middle?
Oh, yeah. If I didn't have close wall, I don't know if I could make that position switch. There's just so much cerebral things you have to know at the position. So, Coach Wall, he got an info background. And he knows every single unit, D-line. So I had a North LaDeline linebackers. Because sometimes I do the same thing with steel chambers, just going to last you in the same position. So if I didn't have Coach Wall, I don't know how long. That take a lot of like behind the scenes work that like sometimes I assume you like, I don't even know this, if I'm not playing. Like how much work goes behind the scenes because Wall watching film talking about this stuff? Yeah, people don't see it. We're in here at 630. Like, Coach Wall, he comes to the building like 5 am. So I went in here at like 630, watch film with him. After practice, meet and watch film and just walk through. You know, it wasn't easy at first, but he got on me, he stayed on me a lot. He helped me accountable and just, I'm thinking for that. What was your depth and how people influenced you?
Two or three times, it's the end of you. Yeah, it's going to be good. You know, he's a real good football player. He can hit, he can cover, so it's going to be good having him back. He's sent him in, one thing good. He's going to be a good player. He's got a little bit of a good move. You get so much to do now, how much you can test it. How much do you not have the same round? Yeah, he's going to be a good fit for us. You know, he played a lot of ball and started, started hands. He's got something to do. So it was crazy, good to have him back when I was having a lot of fun. The best defense is the last five years, my team, 29th and last year. And common thread team, he having a slot corner, a slash, like he or so, shot away from 2019, kind of broad things together. Who's next? Who's next? Yeah. Like for a slot. Yeah. Like, who do you think next to that? I think Miles, you know, he's under size, but I feel like he just brings it. Like, he's got the mentality to play.
And he really likes to love the game. He really studies hard. And I feel like he's going to be up next for the Nichols plot. What have you seen out of Aaron's got? I'm Bryce's a big plod, I can understand. What have you seen out of Aaron in these first couple weeks that they've been here to? Aaron's good. He's competing real hard. He's running to the ball. He's learning. And every single time he's getting better, so that's what I've seen from him. I think about the difference in just top to bottom talent in that room in the last, when you got here to now, I'm going to check it out. It's crazy, you know, coming in, there was this, I don't even know how to explain it, but our room is so talented right now. Like, anybody can go out there, even our twos and threes can go out there and start anywhere else in the country. So, from top down, it's super talented. And we got young dudes like Aaron, Miles and Bryce. So, they're going to go out there and ball in a couple of years, and I'm excited for their future and potential. Those guys give you any crap about you and then draw them back and keep it up to the show.
They're talking about it a little bit, but not for real. They just want really want to learn from us. They're super smart kids, and they're just real eager to learn. Along those lines, it's like how much ownership is a good veteran guy. Do you feel as to what this defense is going to look like next year after you're gone? And they'll second and third, the string guys are now on the top of the network. Yeah, it's going to be wild because right now, they're going to be ready. Because Walt says on me, Dezeo, we stay on them, Dave stays on them. So, they have no choice but to carry on the tradition. I feel like they're going to do it real with Miles and Bryce and Aaron. They're going to hold up the BI and change their position. Hey, Jordan, is it too early to assess for you to assess the spot receivers? For you to assess the Ohio State slot receivers that you're going against? Oh, I played them last year. I won them against them last year. They're all good. Bryson, Brandon and Keon plays a little bit in the slot. Yeah, they're going to be real good. They'll make two, of course, we know what makes us.
It's a lot of time to come to me. It's going to be fine, even when Mike leaves, there's going to be no drop off. Thank you, Jordan. Thank you very much. Appreciate it. Have a safe break. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I don't know what to talk about that. Just sure you'll have a meeting or something. Pick a string. I'll figure it out. Everybody should have a drink. I'm going to give it a piece. I don't know what to talk about. I'm going to give it a little bit of a real affection. I guess you're out. It's going to help me in the year. Is that another piece that I was going to spend five minutes with? Yeah, well, let me first off, I think I'd be doing a disservice to my teammates. You know, me even thinking about what's next. You know, what's right in front of us isn't over yet. And that's another thing I got as help me. So much through is just being present in every single moment that I'm in.
You know, not looking too far ahead because I'll trip on what's right in front of me. So, again, that's too self-insufficient for me to even be thinking about what's next. Did you or you at least were aware that there were a lot of speculation out there that people were going to throw a huge number of the few to go in before all of this season? I mean, right now I'm just not worried about all that stuff. I mean, people can say all they want to say. You know, I'm just focused on, focus on Friday. When you're in front of the fire, you're just nervous. I mean, I still get nervous for sure, but I just don't think. I think I do a good job of just understanding that at that moment, whatever moment it is that I'm nervous about, it doesn't define who I am as a person and it doesn't define who I am and God's eyes. And understanding and knowing that has just kind of put this forceful piece around me that I think
gave it allows me to be able to be calm in certain situations, but it doesn't. I still get nervous. What, what makes you nervous? I mean, I just love the game so much. And if you don't get nervous or a little bit of nervous, I don't think you have that same love. I mean, I've got butterflies since, you know, going into football again since I was, you know, five, six years old. So I don't know what that feels like. I'm just curious. I didn't know. You know, football just doesn't mean as much as it did to me back then. I want to tell you always that, but... I've been told, but... I think so. I'm going to let you all the hours stay. I want to knock on wood, barring any freak accidents. So I just, you know, I want to be here. I want to be a part of this team. And, you know, when you want to and you have passion to add value, that makes it a little easier to get up and do the workouts in the off season.
You know, whether you're 22 or going to be 31. So yeah, I mean, it's definitely special. Do you have about the organizational, do you have anything? I mean, they haven't always had this reputation ever award in the players. You see this off season, St. Brown, golf, you know, a name, not yourself. What does it say about the organization that, you know, you feel like it's changing the reputation a little bit, we're awarding the guys like this one? Well, first and foremost, those three guys absolutely deserving of every penny they got. Incredible. And, you know, me being in the room with Penae every single day, like I was, you know, ecstatic for him. And of course the other guys would be. CalShe's own CEO says it himself. And yes, two thirds of people on CalShe lose money. So what does it take to be in the other third? You have to do extensive amount of research to be good. There are people that spend copious amount of money, time, resources, energy, they've dedicated their lives to basically becoming good at it. All that and still. And yes, two thirds of people on CalShe lose money, lose money, lose money.

Summer colds can linger and getting sick on vacation can derail everything. That's why everyone needs a medical emergency kit. It includes doctor prescribed medications to treat common and serious illnesses. So if you wake up sick, at home or on the road, you already have what you need. lose money. That's CalShe in their own CEO's words. Go to www.fairpredicts.com to learn more. He's my line. He's my guy. I think it speaks to a good culture that's been built. And it's not built on sand. It's genuine. It's real. You bring certain guys in because of what they can add, not just as players, but as people. And like I said, it's a genuine thing that the staff is looking for. And it's not, oh, we're just going to bring this guy in and then get rid of him and try to find something cheaper. I just think it speaks to the culture. We find guys that fit. We find guys that represent what we're about. Not only are they phenomenal players, but they represent us. They represent the city. And to be able to keep a core group of guys around, I feel like more and more in the NFL. You guys come in and out.
And it's hard to develop some cohesiveness. And especially us on the offensive line. We got to play together for a long time now. And that's valuable. I mean, it's that's big time. And then you think even the quarterback position, where his drops are, how he moves in the pocket, things like that. And then Jared and his familiarity with with Saint. And I think it speaks to they want to win. We want to win. This is what we're here to do. We're here to win. So we're going to keep our guys. They can help us win. Yeah. I talked to last week and expressed your desire to stay, but didn't sound like anything was imminent. Can you just take us through how this came together from your perspective? So I bring, I've been going back and forth a little bit for probably about a year and a half now with the organization. Because I knew like I want to be here. There was no questions for me like, this is the place I want to be. I want to stay here.
And then there's just a lot of moving parts. I'm not the only person in this organization. I'm not the only guy that wants to contract extension. And then I think. Coming off two surgeries, I think they probably wanted to see how I was moving around a little bit. And then in OTAs, I actually went up and I had a conversation with Dan. I was like, where are we at? I hear things from my agent. And from our salary cap people and they're talking and I'm getting kind of second hand information. I want to hear it. Like tell me where we're at just so I know. I just want the information so it's communicated well. And pretty much what he told me was to it to you what happened. And I just basically had to stay patient. And for me, it was never going to be hold out of training camp. Oh, if it comes to the season, we're not going to play games like that's just not me. I'm going to show up and I'm going to play because that's what I do and that's what I'm here to do.
So I think it was pretty seamless. I just talked to Charlie and Disneyer upstairs and said it was super smooth. I think it happened in a day, which was pretty much how my second one happened. And my third one happened as well pretty quickly. So I think there's I think there's value in just showing up and going to work. And I think the team knows that I'm not going to change just because I'm not getting what I want when I want it. And then ultimately we both got what we wanted. So for me, it was just I got the information that I wanted from Dan. And when we communicated, man to man, and it was very amicable. And since that conversation, I felt like it was promising that it would happen. I didn't know when exactly. I had a ballpark idea. And then it all worked out. I showed up to camp. I went and played. And the agents and the salary kept people do their thing. And now moving forward, I can just focus on playing football.
Going through camp day to day. I don't have to have any of that hanging over my head. And it's pretty good feeling. I'm more here in the university. Taylor, a whole line in the neighborhood, he's a great job. But it's not here. What does it mean to play for a team that values that side of the game? And when did you first sense that from Brad and Dan? You know, there's a couple times every single camp where Dan will come into the offensive line room. And he'll say, I need to see it today. And I've never had a head coach come in our room and say something like that. And he would pop in every now and then just say, like, today, I need to see it from you guys. Not that we're not out there working hard every single day, but he's like, my eyes are on you guys today. And it seems like a lot of those times, they're kind of some ballbuster practices that are going to be kind of a grind it out.
And that's what offensive line is. And I think you see it with the way they draft, they draft guys in the trenches. And even Dayton back to before they were hired, this organization, I was drafted, Graham was drafted, Joe had always drafted in my class. Frank was draft, like, we were drafting lineman. We were trying to build this team the right way. And we had some pieces and then Brad and Dan just continued to build on that. And I think it's paying dividends. And I can't speak enough to, you know, going back to the culture fit of the quality of people that they bring in. And how when you get along, I don't know, just people's play flourishes even more. And that's another big reason, like, this is where I wanted to be. I had pretty much no interest in going to any other team. I wanted to be here and a big factor of that is the guys that I get to play with. And I want to continue to play with them because they're important to me. And I think, you know, the offensive and defensive line based on how the drafts have gone and based on the quality of player that they've brought in.
I mean, you can see that it's, it's definitely of importance to the organization. Kind of along the same lines, given where the roster is, given the success of the team's head recently, is there something extra-validating about getting your first contract extension under this specific regime? Yeah, 100%. Not that I didn't think that they wanted me here because if they didn't want me here, I wouldn't be here. But I had gotten my second contract from a, you know, a previous regime basically. It's not like I never felt like I was like one in here, but it's just like that little extra. We want you here and we want you to continue to add value. Because we were a young team and I'm not getting any younger. But I still think I can play and I think I can play for as long as I want. And that's kind of kept me young and I feel like that's kept me motivated to kind of have that edge.
But yeah, I mean, it's just that little extra where just kind of reconfirmed. And when Dan was hired, he called me that same day. So it's not an instance of, oh, I'm not one at here. They just kind of doubled down with this contract. We love you, we respect you, we want you here, we think you can play. We think you can continue to add value. And let's get this thing going. Thanks guys. Thanks guys. It's an absolute dime. I think we had a little bit more control out there. It felt like he had a little bit more command of what he was doing out there. Where is it felt to me like Julian was just a little bit off today? Yeah, command is a good way to put it. And that's where the third of car now. Beautiful go ball up the sideline. It ends up being a 45 yard touchdown. Car now had half a step of step on his defender.
But it wasn't the only impressive throw. I think Lincoln had a really nice throw over the middle on the slant route to fill up the freshman. He had a few other nice ones mixed in there. It wasn't a perfect day for Lincoln. He also under threw a couple balls that I saw. But on the whole, I think it's definitely fair to say he was the most impressive of the quarterbacks today. And I would actually even put Tavy and St. Clair second in that grouping. Tavy and had some really nice flashes especially early in the practice. I didn't have that consistency as the practice went on. There's clearly a freshman still learning. But Julian missed on some throws today for with interception. I think there's clear strides that he needs to take to claim the starting job ultimately for Ohio State. And look, I think if anything else that Lynn's credence to, at least at this point in the off season, this is a real competition between Julian and Lincoln. I think if this is what's been consistently shown behind the scenes, obviously this is just one practice we get to watch. But if this is what's consistently shown behind the scenes, I think Lincoln has a real shot to ultimately win the job this fall.
And of course, we'll have another big opportunity to watch the quarterbacks and all these guys next week at the spring game. And I think it'll be really telling, at least for us, do we see Julian make some of those strides next week? He struggled in the spring game last year. Will he have a better showing in the spring game this year? I think that would go a long way for him. Certainly for Lincoln to kind of keep building some momentum as he tries to keep himself up before front of that competition. And yeah, like you said, you know, Tavien was only with the third team today. And so, you know, it's pretty clear of it right now. It's a Lincoln versus Julian battle in terms of, you know, who they're evaluating to be that starting quarterback. But I mean, I think one of the plays of the day, early into practice, Tavien, he spins away from a Russia, throws a beautiful ball down the field to David Adolf. There were a few times today where you could really see Tavien's athleticism on display, his ability to evade Russia's and extend plays. I think that's one of the things that gives him a lot of potential. So, you know, I think Tavien was still at the come a long way to have a chance to be the starting quarterback this year.
But I think you can certainly see those flashes of his potential to be a star quarterback for Ohio State in the future. Going away from a quarterbacks, you know, there were several guys that stood out to me today. I think one of the biggest ones was Quincy Porter. And it sounded like after practice he lost his black stripe, which would make him the first of this year's freshman to lose his black stripe. Which is certainly a notable achievement. And he was a guy, you know, you heard, you know, Austin Edwards on the PA calling his name all day. He made a lot of plays. One of them a really nice diving catch on a throw from Lincoln Keenholes. And he looks like a guy, you know, we don't have the same expectations for Quincy Porter, but we did for Jeremiah Smith a year ago as a freshman. But there's been positive things said about him all spring. And looking at what he did out here today, he looks like a guy who has the potential to help Ohio State as a freshman. Yeah. And when Jeremiah was coming in last year, I talked a lot about the polish that he had coming from Florida and playing in that league. I mean, coming out of New Jersey, I think there's Quincy Porter has some of that, even in the Catholic league that he played in, was really difficult.
He, I think, is impressive with his size and the refinement of his game. The way he uses his size to make catches, like he was walling him off defenders on a couple of catches. As we saw that diving one, you mentioned the way he's able to weaponize his length and have that big catch radius, I think, because it's one thing to be tall. It's another thing to actually be a good tall receiver, you know, like a Marvin Harris in junior was like a Jeremiah Smith is. I think Quincy Porter has that potential and he's really flashed it today. As the starters go receiver wise, I think Brandon NS had a fantastic outing today. Had a really nice post-route. I think Lincoln's probably second best buddy named, besides the gobald or car now. He had Brandon NS on a really nice post-route down the field. Brandon had made a big gain on that play. There were other ways they were getting him involved in the offense coming across the field with some underneath throws. Things of that nature. Phil Bell also really stood out to me as far as another freshman goes. Not as much as Quincy, but they were mixing him in with the twos and the threes, getting him some of those reps and getting him some looks a lot of underneath passes to him.
For me though, I think out of everyone, the biggest standout might have been Bo Jackson today. There was a run that Bo Jackson had where the first play is after we got out here on the field. Bo, Bo, two or three tackles, running up the middle on a play and picked up about 11 yards. Carson Hensman's walking past me and he says, Bo, like that for real. That's like, yes. Watching him today, there was a shotgun toss. They did to him coming on the outside. He picked up about 24 yards on it and just outrunning the defenders. You can see the burst. You can see the willpower. You can see how he always keeps his legs turning to me. Bo Jackson was a really impressive standout today. And it, you know, maybe a guy that could challenge for some carries come fall. Yeah, we've talked a lot about James Peoples and CJ Donaldson. Both of them have looked really good this spring. But yeah, the way Bo was running today, I think he's a guy to watch too. And he make that a three man running back rotation rather than just a two man running back rotation. If he keeps practicing like he did today, I think he's got a chance.
We flip it over to the other side of a ball. I think probably the biggest standout on defense to me was Peyton Pierce. Another guy we've been hearing a lot of good things about all spring long. James Lauren Knight is really talking him out. He was getting a lot of first team reps out there today. You know, sunny style is one of the. Calhchee's own CEO says it himself. Veterans who's getting some limited reps coming off a plan a ton last year. So Peyton Pierce was out there a lot with the ones and he made multiple pass breakups. You can see why James Luronite is keeping talking him up as a guy who is going to be one of those top free linebackers this year and is going to play a lot of football for the buck guys this season. Yeah, I was taking with the defense to me too and that front group, Peyton McDonald was really good today. Had one of his classic goal-wide and stuff. We saw him make a few of those even during the highest-dates national championship run last year. That was kind of his way to get involved in the defense last season in those goal-wide and short yardage packages. But he pressured a throw. I believe it was from Julian Sain. He looped around and didn't hit him basically forced in the completion or not hit him because I don't think the quarterbacks were live at that point.
But he pressured him, forced it in completion. Had a PPU that he batted down was constantly getting in the backfield of making chaos. Also defensively, I thought Aaron Scott had a really good day in coverage. He was paired up against Jeremiah Smith a lot of the time. He had a PPU working against Jeremiah. There were a couple of other plays where Jeremiah may have made the catch but Aaron was right there. I mean, you're talking about the best receiver in the country, right? He made Jeremiah work for it is what I'm saying. A lot of corners aren't capable of making Jeremiah work for it. But he was right there in coverage. He had another couple good reps against other receivers. To me, Aaron Scott was one of the more impressive defensive backs today. And then, Jermaine Matthews also within interception. So I think the corner back room really looking strong in this practice for Ohio State. I agree completely. Devon Sanchez made a couple plays as well. He had a break up against Jeremiah Smith. Lorenzo Styles Jr. he almost had an interception of a really nice break on a ball. I believe he was going up against Brandon Innis in coverage. And so I think you're seeing the depth of that room.
You know, Aaron Scott, Devon Sanchez both mixing in a lot with IGB and Jermaine Matthews if that first team defense today. And Lorenzo taking a lot of a reps fair at Nickel. But you know, it seems like both those five guys. Yeah, that seems to be kind of that top of that corner back group. And I try to take advantage of these reps when you get the goal for once. No, it's definitely. You know, most definitely. I think I was definitely trying to take advantage of each and every rep that I got today. And like I said, just looking forward to getting better tomorrow. So that point, Justin, looking at the first team defense, we've been able to screen so far about some of the guys that they've opened in the second area like yelling at the Jackson. Yeah, I mean, Desan, I mean, you felt his presence. I mean, OTA. I think he's been a great addition to the defense. He brings a lot of energy. He's just up and he's a great player. So I can't wait to get the pads on because I hear he's pretty physical too. So I played against him a little bit when I was tied on. He was in the choice. So I kind of played against him a couple of times. But I mean, he's a great player and I know he has been great so far.
What kind of input did you get from Russ Bennett throughout practice? Yeah. I mean, Russ is always, you know, any question that I have, I can always better ask him for advice. You know, he's going to give his knowledge to me. Of course, he's been in the lead for a long time. So, you know, any advice he has for me, I'm always open and willing to take that. But he was really just, you know, trying to follow along practice. He had the spirit of his hands and really trying to play the practice mentally. So as we all are, sported back. So, yeah. He was just trying out that Russ wasn't going to be practicing the corner. I think he was trying to make some short-term scissors for us. Yeah, I found out right when I woke up this morning. So, you know, last night, just looking over the place. But this morning, I recorded my coach this section. So be ready to catch him up. He wants to be able to. This morning, but it's good, you know, to face some short-term, I remember some of her chiefs and some stuff that, you know, not expecting, you know, because we're going to face things in games that aren't expected. So, nothing about how we react to those situations and how we adjust.
You were really just asking Marham. How early were you? I think it was like six o'clock. So, I woke around 6'30, but yeah, I think, you know, six around six o'clock. Did you change your approach at all, Justin? Did I change my approach? Did you come up? Show off a little. Not really, you know, I just tried to, you know, do my job for my teammates. But I'm not really changing these things. I try to come out here the same guy every day. She just tried to be consistent. I just had to go. I had to see all the proof. I felt alright. You know, of course it wasn't perfect. There's always room to improve, but I felt alright. You know, you know, you know, I missed, I got bumped into, I'm not going to talk about that. But I felt alright overall. Got some good reps in today, for sure. I think like you guys, you guys started targeting the fight in class. How did you, how's it been working with Pat Brown? What did you do? Yeah, I mean, Pat, one thing about Pat, he's really savvy. I'm smart. And then he also has a great hands too. So when you, you know, get all those attributes and a tight end, it makes them a great player. You played a lot of, you had a lot of 12 and 13 out there, right?
Yeah, for sure. Much as you expected, morning, expect you. You know, we're a team that can do a lot of things. You know, we were a lot of good players on offense. So I think you can mix it up with a good bit. So not really expecting anything. Do you think you're getting comfortable when you got that text first thing I mean? No, not really. I mean, they're not going to say that, you know, mess with your head like that. But, you know, I didn't really think I was going to get plenty of it. I'm not sure. I don't, I'm not sure how he's doing right now. I'm not sure. I'm not sure how he's doing right now. I'm not sure. We'll see. Go for more. Or none. All right. Thank you. I'm going to go for the next one.
You know, you can start going through the list. So we, we have to end, I think initially treat them differently. But quickly we have to get them, you know, all on the same page. And so as spring goes on, we'll do that. But early on, we'll be really smart, especially coming off a spring break. Over the right, Kelly and Skits, WSYX. Right, we mentioned the spring showcase, looking a little bit different this year. And you guys are so passionate about those details. Are you able to share what that might look like? Not yet, not yet. Yeah, I mean, there will certainly be opportunities to scrimmage and it'll look like a game. But because of some of the guys that we mentioned, we still want them out there doing some things. So that will probably be in some drill work and some seven on seven work. And be good to get everybody out there so that the fans can see them. But the most important thing is getting the young guys game reps with hopefully a good crowd out there. So that, because we know the next time again, we'll be against Texas. So we'll also have to take a hard look at the health of our team as we get into the end of April. So we have to be able to adjust and be flexible with it.
But again, that's the goal. It was to get these guys as many reps as we can in the stadium. No, I got the lantern. Ryan, not even about that week after the national championship sort of reflect and sit back. What do you think the biggest thing is that you learned about yourself during that entire playoff run? Just to trust the process. Yeah. And just keep pushing. And sometimes, we all know that it's easy to say. It's a little bit different to do is you just, again, trust the process and make the adjustments and keep pushing forward. You know, we always say ignore the noise, whether it's good or bad, because criticism and praise are all the same. You just have to focus on what you're focused on. And all the work and decisions that are made during the beginning of the season, we have to adjust and tweak them. But at the same time, we also have to believe in what we believe in in our philosophy. And I think it's also making sure that you're recruiting the right people.
You know, when you do have a tough moment, everyone's able to stick together and not go in different directions and fray. I think those are all learning lessons. The event on 24 seconds. Ron, is you enter Spring Ball's era of position group or groups that you're concerned about depth wise? And might you guys add more from the portal? And it's already done a good job in portal, but. You know, one of the things for us that was tricky was, the portal was open before our season. And open name closed before our season was over. And that's something that we got to take a hard look at with rules. And people will say, well, you guys just won the national championship. What are you complaining about? Well, that matters for this year's team. And so that was a major challenge for us. Because as you can imagine, if you are trying to add somebody in the portal, but you're still trying to finish your season out, how that can affect your current roster. And then the second part of that is, we get down with the season and Notre Dame and know how stated the only two teams with guys in the portal for that five day window and everybody else is closed.
And it's open season on our players for five days. Like, we got to take a hard look at this to figure out what's right. And whether there's just one window in the spring portal, once all that is flushed out. To me, it's either that or you move back to games. But again, we can talk about that in another date. So we will obviously look in the portal based on how things come out of the spring. We'll look at that. Because we have to fill out our roster too. There's some positions that we don't, we're not of capacity right now. So depth, let's see. On defense, I would say right now, D-line is probably of the biggest concern just in terms of replacing those four guys. And then also losing hero. So that's five guys right there that we have to replace. I think that we have some good guys and good options there, but that'll be a focus. So in offense, D-line is always something that we need to take a look at and see how some of those new guys
fit in and how it all comes together. And then losing Quinshon and trying to running back, James, and now we have CJ and some of the younger guys that now they have to carry the water. So that's going to be big. And obviously, a quarterback would be the big focus. So I think when you look at it on offense, it's really just replacing Will, replacing Trivion and Quinshon and then how the offense align comes together. And then again, on defense, it's losing those five guys and seeing who's going to step up in those areas. That's it. Follow up on Matt Trisha. Obviously, you mentioned he's done a lot of different things schematically in his time. What makes you confident that what he did, me NFL will translate to the collegial level? I think a lot of things that are going on, there's a trickle up and a trickle down effect right now. And you're seeing a lot of that happening. You're seeing a lot of guys transition. I think now more than in the past, you guys probably focus on a little bit more than me. But what's going on in the NFL and what's going on in college?
You're seeing a lot of carry over there. And I think with the playoff system in place, you're seeing that, you're seeing the coach's to play a communication. You're seeing huddling more. The hash marks are different. And there's certain rules that are different. But there's a lot of similarities now. So I think it's going to carry over well. You see quarterbacks who run and were mobile in the NFL nowadays. So there's a lot more similarities now than in the past. And being in the league for just a couple of years, the transition isn't as crazy as maybe it had been in the past. Jeremy Mervingham, the podcast. Ryan, with your offensive staff being, for the town, I mean, you're almost 10 years older than everybody on staff except for coach Scott, I think. How did that decision to, when she left, did that impact your decision with the defense coordinator? Or was there a thought that maybe you needed to go get somebody who was more of the head coach at a defense style based on the fact that you may have to spend more time with the offense in the last. Yes, I think that you need to have balance when you're looking at your entire staff.
And you try to do that the best you can. And I believe very strongly that Brian's going to do a great job as an offensive coordinator. I think he's really grown in a lot of areas. I give him a lot of credit for, he was named coordinator a couple of years ago. I still called the plays. Then we brought in Chip and his attitude of like, I'm just going to learn from Chip in a big way. And then some of the work that he did, Kenan did, and Billy did down the stretch in some of the past game. And I think he's got a really good handle now on protections. And even in the run game, he's ready to call it now. But still going to be involved. Still going to, just like I was last year, still going to make sure that we're all on the same page, having Tyler there was important. But I think to your point, I'm still going to be involved with the offense. But I'm able to kind of bounce into the defense. But the more times that we have guys who are experienced and veteran on that side of the ball, I'm going to stay on offense. It certainly helps. And I think taking the play calling away last year
was really important. I want to continue to do that and surround myself with guys who we can hire to do jobs. And I'm able to take a step back and take a little bit of a different role. I think it helped the season. And I'd like to do that even more as we move forward. Rob Hall, are you convinced this guy? Yeah, more on Matt. He clearly has credibility with his NFL. But I'm just curious in your discussions with him, interviews or whatever, why he decided to come back, or come to college. He's not really bending college Syracuse a little bit. But how much of that was not a concern, but a discussion point? You've got recruiting. You've got a whole different culture. How did that play out? And what did he say that kind of convinced you that he really wants to be in college? I think you guys will get around Matt. You'll see his personality. You'll see the way he is. You'll just see what type of family man he is, type of daddy is, type of husband he is. He did coach at Syracuse. He and Tim worked together there.
But I grew up in New England. I obviously saw the run that they went on there. And when you go and run the way that they went on, you stayed a place for a long time. And I don't know if that was something that maybe even early on. He thought he was going to be in the NFL for as long as he did. But when you're around a great organization that goes on the run that they went on, you end up at a place for a long period of time. And then he's there for a while, and then has an opportunity to become a head coach. Well, now it's almost like a different mindset. It may be a little bit of a different chapter for him. It doesn't mean he's sure he'll have an opportunity to go back to the NFL. But I think it's Ohio State. I think he understands the culture. We spent a lot of time talking. And I think he sees the opportunity here and he's excited about it. I think it's a new chapter that he can absolutely come in here and make a difference. And I think that's what he wants to do. And I don't think the recruiting part is going to be very difficult at all. And you'll see it when you get around him. Joe Nuchin, WCMA.
Naturally, we'll be starting quarterback this year. Because you start that process, if you got a free, that'll be where are you with that? What information do you feel like you have in the guys that are in the mix? There you go. And they're going to have to compete. And we need a quarterback to be tough. We need him to be a leader. I've said this before. They've had a great opportunity to watch well even Tavian, because he was a big part of being around these guys last spring. I don't think he missed his spring practice. He would come during the season for all the games. He was with us for the last two weeks or the last two games. He was able to see what that looked like. Lincoln was with him every day. Julian was with him every day. So that's the standard of what the leadership should look like. Now they got to go do it. And being the quarterback around here, and I mean, you start listening to the guys who have been here most recently and down the history of Ohio State football. I mean, you're some of the best names who've ever played the game. But the biggest thing they have to do is they got to lead and they got to be tough. So a long way to go on it, don't have
any evaluation to go with right now. But it's going to be a big spring for those guys. Tony German, how do you see the quarterback reps going? It's going to be like a 40, 40, 20 or how are you expecting to break that down? Early on, we're going to try to roll. We're going to try to go three groups so those guys get equal amount of reps. We'll split up who goes where. And even the last year with the will, we did that. Guys are getting reps with the ones. Guys are getting reps with the two's, the three's. The times where will was out there with the three's early on. And just rolling. Because if you put one guy with the ones and two, sometimes it's going to look a little different because of the younger guys, older guys. So now we're going to roll. And we're going to try to get the best evaluation. We can will evaluate everything. But specifically early on in the spring, we want to roll those guys the best we can. Because the number one goal of spring is to get individual players better. That's it. We can get scheme in and all that. But fundamentally, technically, we've got to get better as football players. Then once we get into the summer, we start putting the scheme together and we start coming with the chemistry of the team. And we'll be honest, leave them in the comments.
Right, what are your expectations for Tyler going as recruiter in your higher process? How big is that? What's the biggest opportunity? Big, big. And you guys can probably already see he's making an impact. He's getting guys here. He works hard at it. He makes connections. He's build relationships. He can evaluate at a high level. And I think he with some of the guys that we have, on the offensive staff together at the year, you're starting to see a group of crew in there. And so again, World House, we should have the best players in the country. And he understands that. And again, this is another guy. The more you get around him, you'll see his personality. Just jumps out at you. And the guys love being around them. So we'll see how the spring goes. But he's off to a good start. At Murphy, 24% of the scores. Brian mentioned, Brian Hartlin, being ready to take over, play calling. What have you seen in the last two years? Why do you feel so comfortable? The first thing is his work ethic. He's worked his tail off. And when you evaluate coaches, you've got to work at it.
You've got to be one of the first guys in the building. You've got to be one of the last guys to leave. You've got to grind on it. I think he's made the transition from being a player to a coach very well when we've got a quick period of time. His recruiting speaks for itself. But to me, the work ethic has been excellent. The players relate to him. He has credibility. He's got confidence. But he's grown as a coach. He's handled situations well. He understands. We're on the headset. I think that's one of the things, too, that people don't realize. The play callers, the play caller, but in between series. We need to get to this. We need to get to this. It's third down. We're going to get to this. He's been on the headset. And he's there saying, we've got to get to this. We've got to do this. Seize things makes adjustments in game. But it's going to be fun to watch him. Manage a group of people now, because that's a big difference. And you have all the coaches in there. Now you're the guy who's got the clicker. You've got to make the adjustments. You've got to challenge those coaches. You've got to make the tough decisions on personnel and where we're going schematically.
And I'm still going to be there. But I've really tried to let him go and run with this thing. And so I'm excited to see. When you look at Brian, when he's put his mind in something, he's got it done. And I believe he's going to get this one done, too. Austin Moore, podcast. And if I'd like Billy, was there no greater promotion for you? What made that so easy? You know, he really, I say this to a lot of the coaches. When you walk into building, it's your job to bring value. And I think sometimes some coaches wait to do things. Billy jumped on it right away. He saw this as an opportunity. And he took it and ran because of the opportunity that these coaches have not a coach in the field, which they didn't have in the past, spent one on one time in meetings. He took that and ran. And with Chip being the offensive coordinator, he quickly became a quarterback coach really last year. And the good thing for Billy is he was here before. So he knows how we want to coach things. He knows how we teach things. He understands the progressions. He sees it the way that we see it. So him walking in the building, that was,
he was a step ahead that way. He's very smart. He works really, really hard at it. He's got a really bright future in the game. And I think the guys in the room know him. And so it was just easy. And for me, it was good because we see things the same way. And I believe that I can walk out of the room and what we want to get taught is going to get done. No. Another great evaluation this spring. But I saw it last year. I saw the work he did. And he's very, very talented. Joey Kaufman from this dispatch. Ryan, the makeup of the offensive staff being as young as it is there. But past years, we've had somebody like Chip last year. And we'll just wonder what kind of impact you think having much younger staff has. I think it comes down to experience. And now when you start looking at what Brian's not been here for a while, and you look at Tyler's coach a lot of football and lock and even Keenan now is getting a little bit older. These guys now have more experience than they did in the past. And again, I'm still going to be there. But I think it ultimately evaluated
based on what you see. And these guys just won a national championship here. And a lot of coaches haven't done that. So they've seen it. They know it. And so I think that it comes down to your worth. It comes down to what you've done. And I got a chance to see it on a day-to-day basis. And I think these guys are excellent. Doug Lamaries, Kings of the North. Ryan, in hiring Matt Patricia, he had a sexual assault indictment in his past that did not go to trial and was later dismissed. What was the discussion with Matt around that and what kind of vetting process did Ohio State go through? So as you know, when we make these decisions, we spend a lot of time in the interviewing process and getting to know people. And we always take everything into consideration. And that situation in particular, asked a lot of questions, vetted it. Ross Bjork was part of those conversations,
and feel really good about the hire. And our program, as you know, has got great values and standards of how we handle ourselves, which you get to see on a day-to-day basis, and that's not going to change. Bill Rebino, it's Columbus Dispash. I know you were not going to name any kind of frontrunner for the quarterback job, but people have reigned about the way Julian throws the ball. Seems to have all that ability. It seems to be kind of a low key guy. How much do you want to see the fire in him? And that was one of those biggest qualities? Is that almost more the bigger challenge for him than the football stuff? I think all three of them, it's that way. For sure. Yeah, I mean, that being a leader and showing that toughness and showing that fire and showing that grit is, you know, willed in a great job with that. So we're coming off the heels of that. So again, these guys got a chance to see that. But yeah, I agree with you. I think that that's the biggest challenge. And that's, Mick does a great job of really fostering
that behavior, enforcing those guys in a leadership role. Get them in front of the team and speak. You know, you've got to get going. And that takes reps. So the first few times that might be a little clunky, it may not be very good, but the more you do it, the more confidence you have, and the more you get to find your voice. And that'll be important for the quarterback, because you know here. We have two more questions. Bill Landis, games of the North. Right. So we have a coordinator like Matt, who has a lot of success on the same side of the balls that had coached. Like with Bill Bellicheg. How do you evaluate that and try to discern that coordinator's impact as opposed to just like being in a very good situation at succeed? Yeah. And you know, like, you know, with Doug's quite, like the amount of time we spend vetting all those types of things to find out exactly what's going on and the history behind it all is, you know, you call the guys that he worked with. You know, and I think that's a great question. That was, you know, honestly, one of my questions. You know, what did it look like? And so, you know, you ask guys who were actually in the building, you know, Nate Evans, one of them, you know, you ask coaches that he coached with. I won't get into the names of the people you call,
but you got to make a lot of calls to find out, you know, about people. And you know, what you found out was, you know, I mean, he was running the defense. Now, certainly coach had a, you know, a big hand in that. And, but as time went on there, you know, it was his show. There was certain a lot of collaboration there, but, but, you know, he's very, very intelligent, really knows defensive football and the guys who played for him, you know, really felt like they were getting better because of the way that he taught football fundamentally. And I think even our guys in the building now, in a short period of time, it's making a lot of sense to how he teaches the game. So all those things were part of the evaluation and the Mika decision. Jeff Gilbert, Crestbrook. Coach, a year ago, all the talk was a national championship with everything you had in place. This year's different. Do you have any discussion still? Is that too much pressure of this group? How do you handle expectations with this team?
And as you often say, you're not allowed to lose here. Yeah. No, it doesn't change. Our expectations don't change. But, you know, I think whether it was last year, the year before this year, I mean, none of that stuff's ever going to change. And so, you know, we're going to go. But I do think coming off the last year, you get a chance to learn about your team. You get a chance to grow with your team. But, yeah, I mean, I think it's what, 170, six days or something until we play Texas. I mean, it's coming. It's right around the corner, I heard in 73, I think, maybe. I mean, it's coming. And we got to be ready to go with this team in this group. That's just the way it goes. And, you know, we want to continue to stack these years. And I've got to be playing our best football at the end of the season. But, yeah, I mean, that's not going to change. And, you know, I think last year, with everybody coming back and, you know, some of the additions that we made, it sort of created a lot of attention nationally. And that was what it was. But ultimately, that shouldn't have affected how we went about our work.
That's just stuff on the outside. And, you know, whatever they're going to say about this team shouldn't affect how we go to work each day and how we start our first game. Go, thank you very much. Guys, thanks. Folks, we'll migrate out onto the indoor. CalSheezone CEO says it himself. Any as 2-thirds of people on CalSheez lose money. So what does it take to be in the other third? What kind of example is Sunny setting for a group right now? Sunny, his position, his switch from safety to linebacker.
I feel like the way that he played last year, being his first year at linebacker. I feel like if he could do it, I could do it. So that's definitely good example. Do you have a lot of experience playing safety? Yes, I'm really seeing my freshman year. Hi, this is Dave Roberts. Heading into summer without a medical emergency kit, that's a risk. Obviously you want to win this, you want to win an national change. But how do you keep that same kind of edge mentally that you had in that Tennessee game to give that kind of offensive performance? Yeah, that's the challenge, man, is keeping that edge. And I think we play well when we have that underdog chip on our shoulder mentality.
And that's what we came out with last game. And that's the challenge is how do we not listen to any of the good stuff right now? Because the same people that are patting us on the back, we're beating us down two weeks ago. So you just got to remember that and remember to not eat any of the sugar and just keep our heads down and keep grinding and keep having that same edge and that same mentality. And it really starts with how we practice, I think. Not more. What kind of helmet? When you share my empty bracket, chip talking about the fact that's really you really want to kind of take advantage of that. That's not like a play calling thing that's really you. So when you see, hey, we've got a couple guys over there. What's that view for what you see on the rest of the field and what you're receiving in the process? Yeah, anytime, you know, a defense has to put two guys over one. I mean, that it's either creating matchups elsewhere or giving you numbers in the box. Whatever it is, you got to be able to work with it and see it. And I wouldn't be surprised if people are going to start bracket at number four. I'd probably do it too.
But you can't forget about 17 and two and 88. I mean, shoot, we got guys elsewhere. If you try to take one of them out of the equation, then we got other dudes that are going to step in and make plays too. And that's the thing. You can double them and they'll still go and make some plays. That's all part of the chess game. And like I said, playing a team twice becomes even more of that. Back and forth chess game. How are we going to scheme them up and vice versa? But at the end of the day, it all comes down to execution and finding the matchups where we can and taking advantage of what they give us. David Degu is my WTMA. Well, you talked a lot about momentum in the playoffs. So what kind of an advantage does that give for team like yours? Against a team that hasn't played since the big time challenge? Yeah, I can't speak for them because they obviously have had a little more time off. But in terms of us, I think playing that first game did give us a little bit of momentum and feeling good going into this next game.
If I was coming off of four weeks of rest, I don't know, it'd be a little weird coming out here and playing the first game. But we said we wanted to get that first one and then get this ball rolling from there and keep this thing going. And I think I can't speak for them. I don't know, but we feel good about where we're at. Have a new fuck out of them? Yeah, well, is Jeremiah always open? Because Jeremiah thinks Jeremiah is always open. Yes, he is pretty much, they got to put three or four guys over him for him to not be open. Yes, he's unbelievable, man. He makes some pretty crazy plays and can do some great things off the line of scrimmage. And then when the ball is in the air, he goes and gets that thing. So I mean, he's special. Awesome award, the podcast. Well, this isn't specific to the last play in the Oregon game, but when you're talking about rematch in a second shot, how many times do you think you watched the duration of the first matchup as you're doing a film preparation?
Two weeks after the game as well with the off-leaf, but also now, time to prepare for Wednesdays. Yeah, more times than I can count, man. We got the game planned in the facility here, so nobody's forgot about it. I watched it quite a few times that by week afterwards, how could I fix it? And then at the same time, you want to flush it and get away from it, but now that they're back, they're the squad we're playing, it's like, I have watched it, and it hurts me, because I'm like, man, there were so many opportunities for us to win that game. Looking back at it, it's like, man, we just didn't play our best ball that day. It makes you excited, because we got another chance at it. And like I said, you don't get a lot of second chances in life. And God's blessed us with one. So we got to make sure we take advantage of it. It's a hell of a team, man. Oregon's a great team. They do some really good stuff, man.
And it's not going to be easy, but we got to go in there and do our thing and take what they give us and impose our will, because that's the only way we can do it from here on out. I don't know if I have that answer. When I'm watching film, I'm watching a bunch of different film. And our game is one of the games they played. So I'm going to be watching that a bunch, and then also watching the other games they played. They have changed a little bit, and we've changed a little bit. Nobody's just going to stay the same every year. Every week, you're upgrading, you're trying to become a new version of your team. So we got to evaluate where we're at, where they're at, and see what the best method of trying to figure that out is.

That's relatively small compared to your receivers. What makes them pretty effective, a corner? I think they're very athletic and they're not as physical as some of the other corners we played against. They're not trying to put their hands on you at the line, but they are very good shadow guys and they stay with guys and they stay over top of dudes and they don't like to
get beat over the top and I don't think they get beat very often. Obviously they're going against their playmakers every day which they got some fast dudes over there. I think they're both great players. I think Seven's, I played against him when he was at Oklahoma State. I think he's a good player. He's solid. They're both solid players, but I think we got an advantage physically a little bit that we need to take advantage of and make sure that we don't let them just stick all over us and I'm not worried about that. They got good players and we're going to have to show up and win our 1-on-1s. Let's go to Cameron T. Robinson from the athletic. Well, I think it was a little earlier in the press that you said that obviously you guys have changed. You guys are a different team, but how are you different from since that or in game? Yeah, I think you try to evolve every week and you try to learn from the good things
and from the bad things and I don't know if I could say one thing about where I've gotten better at, what I've gotten better at, maybe my completions just trying to take what the defense gives me, trying to get smarter with that with my decision-making as the year has gone on and just get more comfortable in the system. I think it is another part of it. I don't think there's one thing I can necessarily put my finger on, but just trying to learn from the good and from the bad and evolve in every single week. We have one more Zoom call, go ready, associate the press. Well, what's a bent-like avid chip? Kelly is your offensive coordinator and just how is a relationship developed and maybe improved during the year? It's been really good, man. He's a super bright guy, run game, past game. He's coached some of the best players that I've grew up watching and I think just getting to work with him and just getting to be on the same page with
him about a lot of things. The more that this year has gone on, I feel like we're in sync right now, pretty damn well. We both see things the same way sometimes, but then we're able to have that healthy discussion of what do you like here? What do you not like here? I think our relationship has just gotten better and better as the year has gone on. I've thoroughly enjoyed my time with him and working with him and I think we've had a good time with it and we want to finish this thing the right way. Is there a quarterback that he coached? You liked or took after? I wouldn't say necessarily one of them, but I did grow up when I was an Eagles fan and he was the coach of the Eagles. I've seen him, he's brought up clips in the quarterback room of some of the Eagles stuff. That was pretty cool. I wouldn't say there's one quarterback. I emulate my game after necessarily, but it was cool kind of the first time when I was like, oh, damn, he
coached the Eagles back into that. That's pretty cool. That time for just a couple more questions, do you even mean to claim a dot-com? Maybe I'm making too much of this, but I think I'll engerimize second touchdown. I think before this nap, you looked over there a couple of times, I don't know, can you just walk us through what you were seeing and did that play just ultimately turn into, oh my god, he's one on one cover with one safety and throwing it up? Yeah, so on that play, I'm looking at where the safety is and if the safety gets over top of him, I'm not going to throw it to him. If he's not over top of him, I'm going to throw it to him and he didn't get over top him. I was just making sure that they were crazy enough to leave him one on one and they were. And by the way, the builder Benoit's fun to say. That's kind of along those lines. I mean, when you see him in man's coverage, what I want, is it almost like automatic? I'm throwing it to him. It's an easy position. If we got it called, yeah, yes, pretty much. I mean, there's quite a few routes where, you know, it's an ex-isolation or a one-on-one concept and if we have one-on-one with him or really,
you know, you leave any of our receivers one-on-one and it's pretty hard to guard. I met with a very talented receiver, Carnau, on Brandon, but Jeremiah just seems like out of different levels than anybody, especially with freshmen. Do you guys have that appreciation, like, oh man, this guy is special, when he's a freshman? Yeah, I mean, I think you forget about it a lot, you know, when you're around it every single day, you kind of forget that the kids was in high school a year ago. You know, he just doesn't. You just around him, you don't feel like he's a high school kid. You don't feel like he's an 18-year-old, 19-year-old. Like, he's just mature beyond his years and yeah, he's special, man, he's different. I've never seen a kid his age. I've really never seen anyone. Summers full of reasons to look your best. Yes, moving all over. Yes, sir. What was it like for you just getting to be here and see, you know, this team win an national championship in the first few weeks on campus? It was crazy. I feel like I knew that they were going to do it from the beginning of the season. I feel like they always had the potential. And then they came out here that did it and the freshmen that we had an opportunity to sit there and watch it. So I feel like now we just got to do it again. What did you learn from that? Just it's all hard work and it's just a bunch of guys and it's really a brotherhood and it's really just our family versus their family. And we just got a person here and we got to win the games and get back to the men. I was in line. The first outline was saying that Park Allen brand and have really been leaders in the world. So what if how have they both been leaders for you and the every young seevers? They've been leaders just in multiple ways, whether our column, we're in their in the film room together on the jugs. I'm asking them about this route, Hawk, or run it better. I'm asking them how I run this route on this play just many different things. I feel like those guys they're like big brothers and all that done is help me. A valuable is that to have guys that are
the play like football but also been a college for a while so we're doing good ask them for various things about college life. I value it. It's real valuable for sure because they're they're friends around pit guys. So I feel like just being in a room with those guys and if you're able to thrive with those guys you know something's going good for you. I had always had a good relationship with Tavian. He recruited me hard to come here so I feel like we always talked and he came here and he's been doing this thing they've all been doing their thing and Julian saying he's another Cali Kinsel. I had a little relationship with him too so good to see Julian Lincoln and Tavian all doing real good. What is that next step for you I just really just everything. I feel like you can never be too perfect and I feel like you just got to keep doing your job so I say maybe just just showing up more and just doing my job to the T.
Going against these corners of these TVs how does that kind of make you better high school in high school I had a five star corner DJ DJ on Lee he's at Alabama so I always had good work with corners so I feel like it's just a lot I'm going against a lot of good guys now and say that it's just being one on one that practice with DJ so it's real good for sure. Does it take more courage to play with slot? Say it again please. Does it take more courage to play with slot? What do you mean by that? Because there's more stuff but they think there's bigger injuries inside you've got to have you've got to be aware of it but it doesn't take more courage to do that. I guess you can say that I feel like I just always play slot and I feel like that's what I've been better at so I feel like I feel like it's just what I have to do to be honest. No matter who's in front of me how big he is how strong he is I feel like if I got an assignment I've got to do it. I think that the mindset for me as always has been that when I win my one on one the ball goes down
the field you know what I mean so and I think that's what I'm most excited about just being a left tackle is that especially with the protections that are a little bit longer plays where the left tackle tends to be a one on one or my the plays I tend to love the most because kind of halfway through the play we're locking them up and just know that he can't go anywhere. He's like a smile but you're like oh dude ball's gone you know what I mean like ball's gone and it's going to be a touchdown it's going to be a huge gain just so I think for me that's kind of the mindset you kind of have to have the left tackle spot is that as soon as I win like my rep we're going down the field so that's just the mindset I have in terms of how well I have to prepare. Honestly I'll say that mindset kind of came from college again obviously I played with a lot of great guys in college you know glad we have all those guys here you know what I mean to throw the ball to as well just because against
one of those things like with CJ you just again a left tackle my mind so it's just will let CJ just do his thing and that's my thing I want Kyle ready to be able to do his thing don't worry about whoever's over here just do your thing that's why you're here and just throw at the Marvin and you know and we'll be and we'll be good you know what I mean so that's something excited about and I think all that starts because of what we do on the line so I think just not just myself with the entire room takes pride in hey like when we do our job up front that's where everything else goes so let these guys we have with the ball in their hands do all that all that magic we just got to do our job just take it when you're one-on-one you know. We're doing well in a just plan that that's fine mean something special just because of the history of that position and you know just of all the greats that have played left tackle I mean do you ever think about just the past and the you know the people the players before you who were in that spot and did great things. Yeah I mean again I feel like just from just as a young guy in a game I of course
try to I like to watch the the greats the game like to watch guys like a weight worth of course you know will the Anderson you know you play on the right side but again I think continuing to watch the greats that played the game just can take the dominate for those guys from me be able to talk to them again to be able to learn from their story and their journey and how they developed of course I understand I want to create a I want my game to be able to be like there's in a way to where it's talked about in a way of like that's a guy you need to watch just to watch with you know the fight that you played with the finish that you played with and the technique you played with because those guys played almost 20 years you know what I mean so and again I think that's something when you watch the guys though the legendary guys come before yeah you know they're strong they're tough guys but you know I don't know but when you're like 36 37 years old you probably not that's not as strong as you used to but that technique and just the skill set that's something
that I admire you mentioned earlier about the guys going out to UCLA and kind of getting out of the heat I'm curious when you're working out here do you do anything outside or do you avoid it all together right now I don't know I'm always outside I'm always outside I'm honestly I don't mind the heat I love the heat um and honestly for me it helps I'm off like 320 so I kind of warm up quickly so it's kind of nice for my warm up I don't have to be doing like a 30 minute warmup you know you kind of just be outside long enough collect this and your joints are on go so um I actually I I like it oh uh go going back to the players that have been in the league for a while Calvin Beachham is one of those guys that's been in the league for a decade plus what have you been able to learn from him um I think again just learning how to be a pro in terms of in terms of certain things like for example I'm a guy that when I like to train by myself I'll just take a thousand reps of a set a thousand reps of a I reach block I'm a rep rep rep rep and type
thick I've done a hundred times and I wrote perfect and some of that beach is like talking about in terms of being a pro and I thought to me that's me being a pro is a young guy thick I've a lot of I reps in my body so I'm going to take a lot of reps in preparation but beach is a guy where it's like it's not about necessarily the quantity in terms of it's really through the quality but but even more so he's like you know you're off season you don't got to be doing something like this every single day but when you do it like from your first rep even your first rep is not like here I'm taking this rep oh it wasn't good because it's going to be better on the second one like each rep even when you're by yourself is just kind of I guess I'm a mindset like just give yourself 15 reps instead of doing 60 reps and I sounds like a huge difference but to me out of mind taking 60 reps from by myself and there's nobody that's waiting around on me and I'm by myself I can I'll take my time and I'll do that which is being like I'm going to do 15 perfect reps and I'm just going to slow down and take all my time stuff like that that way your
body I way you're not you're not you're not doing too much before can't you know maybe the many of the guys that left guard in the mix were here last year except forever how does that relationship develop throughout yeah I mean so honestly I like that's my guy we like to compete we've been competing in the weight room since day one in terms of just like what we consider like athletic competitions so like even in the weight room I'm at the very end of the week when we're done lifting I'll I'll talk to Evan I'll bet now you're standing will just do some sort of competition whether it's grip or whether it's jump or where it's pull-ups or something and I don't let him wave until I beat him in all these two things like so if we do if we do a jump thing and like I always thought was the best kind of I had the most height when I jumped out of O line I could dominate anybody and that but he beat me in that surprising size of art and we're hopping on a bike and then we did this bike thing I beat him on a bike and now we're don't pull-ups talk beat him on a personal kid now we can leave you know what I mean but we
just have that that in words is always just competing and and then again obviously you know he wasn't on the team with us last year but I think what he brings at the table with beings of that is that he's like a plug and play guy you know he knows he's been in no snares before he's played with guys like Pene when he was with Detroit so obviously he's just being able to talk to him and how this is how it was when I was setting with Pene this is how it was I was on same sea hawks these are the different things that I can do that mirrors some things like in your game how you set and I'll talk to him about what I like to do in certain scenarios and how his set can sort of match that does that make sense so I think he adds a lot to the point to where strength coaches like you you guys got to go like yeah you guys should go you know we're not trying to we're not trying to break any rules around here but you know but it's just me and him
just going and he loves it you know so and even us starting to do that we started to get other guys in the O line that tried to hop in on our competition for fun but only matters what be Evan it's just I'm just beating you you know so it's fun hi this is Dave Roberts heading into summer without a medical emergency kit that's a risk summer colds can linger and getting sick on vacation can derail everything that's why everyone needs a medical emergency kit it includes doctor prescribed medications to treat common and serious illnesses so if you wake up sick at home or on the road you already have what you need it's like having an urgent care and pharmacy at home say $45 with code blue at urgent care kit.com slash blue urgent care kit.com slash blue ranked number one in innovation 11 consecutive years Arizona State University isn't just ahead of the curve it's creating new paths to success learned from notable

on 24 and such year there's not a lot statistically you guys could do to get better so where improvements can you guys make to really kind of get to that level and watch it? I think the improvements we need to do it need playing good throughout the year but when the big games come we got to play I mean that's where you have to be the best we can't rely on anyone else that has to be the defense that really runs the show half the time and half the offense got carried on back and having to do the day-do and don't have to worry about us like letting up points or anything like that so definitely big games we have to we have to come yeah that definitely feels like a big difference so we just got a lot of guys we got a lot of good special talent and you know you just got to find a way to get these guys on the field and it's just having a lot of new guys we got to definitely bring them in and definitely find like it's to find a gel with them get a chemistry with them and it's just bringing defense closer than we were last year and that's why my man goes he's just a worker he's been working so long as he
been here and he's just you want to keep trying to find ways to get better every single day and I just one of the things I applaud him for he's very passionate he's very passionate about getting his back you know he just he has in his heart and being being a kid from a house just like me is just having a passion for one to win like you're playing for the Ohio State University you want to win you don't want to have to have to settle for anything less he seems like things really put for him down the stretch in that Minnesota game yeah oh yeah I think it just I mean he just have to be bought in I mean as a unit together we just wanted to we want to do better we want to be better every single game and I feel like you just understood that and every time you win he just knew that we were playing for each other so he went out there he played he stopped thinking stop thinking less than just going and he just played and the play showed out for him because it hard is a player to I guess get to that place where the game comes natural you're not thinking so much oh yeah I think it definitely comes with
experience I mean usually players play better towards the end of the season because they have more experience than being out there so when you play more you usually know more what's going to happen so it's either it'd be easier to be out there rather than thinking and most of the time there you go I'll just ask the central Ohio guy just what does this mean I mean you're here in third four here just what does it mean for you to take pride in what's going on oh this is a special feeling I mean it feels like I have like the whole city on the back on my back just being able to be out here and just it's a blessing to be playing for the Ohio State University so I mean why the cherish every single day just treat it like my last the third year under coach will you guys feel like you got the defense internalized and know every fit of what you need to know I guess or you think yeah I think they've been the third year I mean the defense it's just like right now it's just fine tune a little things I mean everything we're stuck we're very glue we're glue everyone with all the plays and stuff like that so we just fine tune a little things that we can get better
at and pretty much just bringing in with anything new that we have just bring it in and really bring it together so yeah I think we're good now people look at you and tiley get the main guys inside but you're some of the other guys that really start to come on they're going to be giving you guys some extra playing time I guess this year I think a lot a lot of guys are really pushing forward to breathe playing a lot of interior guys like hero came McDonald guys like that Wilson if all the guys back there they're really pushing it to play I mean anybody in a defensive line could play right now I feel like I see gather together as a union and make each other better every single day that's what's gonna make everyone because we're trying to get this year to everybody to play everybody needs to play good thanks a lot right now it means just stepping into a fifth year of being here a while it's the leadership
role I feel like being a leader in here I really have to push the younger guys and really have to step up for the me and I've been here a long time so I feel like really elevating the guys to below me it really make it in better because if they can play just as good as I can play then we're gonna be unstoppable how does it help you play at poppins when you have so many veterans around you guys that you've played for so long uh it helps us because it just has this chemistry thing so let's be in together for so long I mean being in the system for so long it's like it's natural so we go out there we don't have to think too much we just go out there and play because you know we got each other for you was it an easy decision to come back for another year or was did you have to think about it? uh definitely had to think about it a little bit but I think all of us coming back we all had to understand that we have we still have something here and we need to finish this unfinished business that we need to take care. What are the biggest things that you feel like you can do this year to you know help yourself get to that next longer? uh definitely think just playing harder just having more experience to be out there and playing the game and being out there more and just refining my technique and stuff like that just being able to be out there and make more place I mean just being in the right position at the
right time. There's a defensive line in the hole like what do you guys you know have specific goals for yourself this year how you think you can get better as a unit? uh right now we don't have specific goals I mean right now like I said we're just working on technique we're working on the little things because little things are in a big thing so right now we're just trying to get the small and refined detail refining because we're going to make we're going to go out there and we're going to need those we get in the game. You mentioned your leadership how have you seen the depth behind you starting to develop this spring? uh it's definitely coming together I mean there's a lot of guys there's a lot of guys really growing up and so they're really pushing pushing the ranks right now and this is me as like I said anyone could play I mean just just the way they work every single day any guy could come in and play in a position so it's very anyone who's really jumping out to you so far of a spring. I mean all the guys I mean jumping out I mean we've only been two practices so far but I think all the guys are really working it's like a group unit that everybody's pushing hard so thanks Ty. Thanks Ty. You're welcome. All right. I don't know where Jay ran off to but I leave me for you. Pastor. You know you know Nathan and Caleb they both played both positions in your
defense and their college careers. Does it really matter and what you pull those two then if they can both play both you've got Jordan and the Slot like yeah. Is that even like I don't know yeah you do because you you you have specific job responsibilities within those but they become more interchangeable and fluid and how you can function with those pieces you know it doesn't it's not like a true strong or a free safety you know what I mean those guys are able to compliment each other and you have more flexibility within your packaging to put those guys in position to make place. What have you seen for Jay? We saw him on Saturday running with the ones. Yeah he's been a guy that's been on the rise you know to me from where he was when he started spring ball to where he is now he's made more plays at practice his eye discipline is better his understanding of the defense is better which allows you to be able to play free and be able to play fast so that's what I've seen so far and I can I expect that to continue. He's been great. He's
been great. He first off we do a thing where we track how well you run to the ball every practice one of the things that we grade right so you can talk about all the schematics that you want coach knows has all that but if you're not running to the ball you're not playing good defense right so we track that and he's one of the guys that every single practice is one of our highest grade guys running to the ball so he's been awesome from an effort standpoint first attitude he's in early he puts the work in and he's made a bunch of plays out here so now I'm excited about Jay on the claim for sure. Yeah so we're really track an effort and how hard a guy's playing from there is what we do but I would say this too he's been around the ball a lot right with his alley running and he's downing the ball and on a break through run or fitting gaps and then he's got really good range in the post for the half-two so he's done a good job of of both of those things I guess all the above. Yeah I do I do and you know it's been an opportunity for you have a couple guys that are
out there so you're able to continue to grow the depth and be able to see what guys can do and you have increased reps from that standpoint so I do feel confident you know I feel confident in the guys that you know how they've performed so far the spring and the guys that haven't been out there I feel confident from what their abilities are what I've seen on film and then the the mental preparation from that standpoint now I would go back to refer to you know what late then was like a couple years ago and taking that same blueprint. Yeah he's done I would say the mental side I would say if you took he has really good physical skills you see him when he walks on the field I mean he's he's a yeah no doubt I would say the mental side of the game right really understanding what's the defense what's my eye progression where do I fit into this chess piece you know what's my chess piece in this whole match that's happening and yeah I've been pleased with him and he's putting the work into to make sure he understands what's going on. I wouldn't say we're not saying it's great
right and because his preparation is so high level it challenges you as a coach to be in a elite teacher right because he's going to be on his game. He said coaching a professional player right he understands the concepts in the game so well he's put so much time into it as a coach you better be matching or equaling that right going above and beyond that because if not he's going to be a step ahead of the coach right so that's uh it's been awesome to be able to push each other to make each other better um he's got a great understanding and feel for the game he's a great young man the work ethic is really high level so every value that you would look for not just for a skill or intangible thing but who he is the person I can't say enough about who Caleb Downs is it's been awesome. What's the next step for you from waiting then we'll talk about the preparation that Caleb has is waiting coming back from your final say coming back from injury like what do you want to see from him maybe it's leadership maybe it's on the field I don't know what is it for you. Yeah I think I think leadership is definitely something right he's a guy that's been there done that um has accomplished
a lot but not the goals that he wants to yet so I would say from a leadership standpoint holding guys accountable and he's done that at a really high level um and then his own preparation I've been impressed with uh you know if you're not taking as many physical reps what are the mental reps that you're taking and he's done a really good job of having daily routine putting the time in making sure that he's conscious be with everything so I would say the off the field stuff is uh you know a step in the right direction. What did you what did you take away from your experience life with coach coordinator that since we last saw tonight you've been through multiple spring practices. What did you learn something in your time or whether it's just for you as a coach that you brought here to bring the safety of injury. Yeah um I think that you learn different ways to be able to do things whether it's taking the ball away or tackling methods or you know the way that it's taught from other defensive coaches so to learn from a different tree and thought process and philosophy you know I try to I pride myself on being a teacher um which means that you better always be learning right or you're getting behind so I would say yeah just different ways to be able to maybe do
similar techniques or things that have to be done from a defensive principle standpoint and then you know bringing that to the table as you step back and you say okay here's how I've always done it or I've done it in the the gym knowl system right and then you're in a different defensive system and how to how does that get executed and then you can blend some of those or pick what you know what you like from there so a chance to reflect that's it. Did you feel like you accomplished what you wanted to away from the gym knowl system to bring it back to the gym knowl system? Yeah yeah I mean I think anytime that you're no matter where you're coaching right you have principles of defense and a way to be able to play defense whether you're how you tackle or how you play the red zone or different things like that and there's metrics to be able to track that and and some improvement was made not enough of my opinion you know I move it there were there were strides from from that standpoint and then yeah when you come back into it you say okay the system here has developed in a year that I was gone right and then maybe I'm able to develop a little bit as a coach to and from a positional coach or a coordinator mindset things like that and then you're able to mesh ideas and come back and you learn hey what's the new that's happened over a year and then I was able to see the big 10 from
a different lens as well you know so I think that's valuable. Man it's a lot of you are down a few safeties on Saturday just kind of how do you feel about your depth of that position right now? Yeah it's something that you know we've we've addressed and say hey here's the guys that have played here's the guys that haven't played who's taking the reps right now and how do we grow those guys you know from that standpoint so I think that's a a work of progress every single day so I've been pleased with the guys I think there's been a on the you know steadily on the rise approach from everybody in the room you know so I've been pleased with the guys and the progress that they've made so I feel good about it and I expect that to continue throughout spring and then continue throughout summer and into fall camp you know from that standpoint yep. Yeah I'm Jayden Bonz just taking advantage of the opportunity that he's had, Jaylon McClain's taking an opportunity you know I've managed the opportunity. Inky had a really good day today you know it's taking advantage of the opportunity so the guys that you know have taking reps you know I'm pleased with watching those guys you know continue to progress you know and the Caleb I think is you know learned our system and done really well and
gotten better every day. All right man thank you. Thanks. Appreciate it guys. The game the intensity you know I've said it a thousand times that he doesn't get incrementally faster or stronger the game mentally slows down for him so he can use his skill set that way. So what is that we're talking about that's his weight that's his strength because those numbers are going up so he can play with more pillar strength he can play more contact he can play more comfortable even though his 40 time didn't go from a 5-0 to a 4-8. He just jumped right in unbelievable job both ways of him just coming in with shelving the ego that he had he really had none and walking in saying I'm walking into a room as we told him we recruit him like you're coming into a room a bunch of good dudes and then our good dudes are good dudes he came in and there was no it's like you're here here's how we do here's how we operate and let's go and so that learning curve for all those whether it's a high school mid-year guy or a veteran mid-year guy
transfers in there's a learning curve there just you know circling back to we had natural maturation a little bit because he's been through a little bit of spring boys been through a little bit of camps so you're still learning the terminology you're learning a new skill set but he just dove right in and wanted to be a sponge and wanted to learn he's doing a good job and he's improving every day you know so that's what's making the battle and the competition all these graded snaps really you know good for us is because they all have that mindset so from Seth awesome the unit and the group awesome because there was no combativeness to it it was let's get in the skull and it's competing and let the guys win just learning the same to you all young guys you're coming you got to learn how to play in friction so having you know three tech having a two i having those guys like right in front of you that every time you take one of those reps and you're out of your base or you're in your base you feel the good you feel the bad so being more consistent that way you know you can't make moves or shift guys if they're not mentally there and so for him he's
got a pretty good football fq so he's continued he's growing every day he's working and he's getting beat every day too and he's learning from those you know so in the spring time you know we have saying in our room we're like in the spring it's yes and it's no and I know it's KNOW why didn't the rep work what happened and how do I make sure I don't repeat the same mistake and so whether he's coming in and watching the tape on his own and then come with questions he's grabbing me and watching tape with me or we're coming doing stuff as a unit he's learning so that same deal the game can slow down and he gets more comfortable there in friction so I mean he's his weights up his strengths up he's spending off season with Mick you know there's a lot of development that still has to be had obviously not a finished product but being able mentally for a guy to handle that you know helps a lot Luke a leaner guy did you tell him that he paid you to say that he did not pay me to say that that might be the first time he ever heard that in his life no no you know like Luke Carson
whoever maybe that that jump of 18 to 19 to 19 to 20 year old kid that plays a lot into it too being in a full year with Mick I mean all those guys you coming at mid you're like your Devo and Dion and Ian more right now you're keeping your head above water that's your whole first year now you can actually get and we can sit so when you sit and talk about a jam combo or a lock or whatever to call maybe to Luke he registers that and I like something new because then there's paralysis by analysis so I think the middle part on top of another year natural maturity of getting bigger and stronger that's always going to help you're not going to guys here they're not going to regress it's gonna keep adding progress and how fast can we get that going as well we're working on every day with him Josh said that he would have been all guard to this point and Coach Dave's mentioned this several times that Josh could play guard too and you guys are trying to work through that fire he's I mean Josh could play off-eye I mean he snapped the ball in high school you know Josh had a great off-season but for you when you're going to spring and it's
fact finding experimentation how much do you want to put them in different spots or not because you also have an eye on August to try and settle on five-man rotation what's the balance of that for you you have to get a really good gradeable set so that everybody has numbers of you know just like we said before how many times have we done a run blocking or pass blocking in this situation so that that all evens out so that's the it's not experimentation it's just making sure that you get a good book of work to look at and grade that so as we you know work guys around the platoons and go just to make sure that everybody gets good gradeable reps so we can sit back by the end of spring and say all right this is your comparing apples to apples and oranges oranges and not you know apples to oranges because it's completely different that way so that's kind of the thought behind that as you as you're going through the spring when you got here a couple years ago because I would have told you years from now Chip Kelly is going to be here as office for what you said not a laugh you know but then I said you know it's college football so who knows right what's up in like I'm sure you're enjoying it what's up in like yeah I mean
he just added to another piece of just good people here I mean you still you're coming to work here with the guys every day you know but the kids we talk about a thumb but then for us his coaches as staff so adding just another good dude that's in the room obviously as he says something and you know he might speak in old terms or terms that we had you know maybe be a little bit of a rosetta stone like no no this is this he's like yeah that's right because that happens to all coaches that happen to me when we got here first I was at what coach day sometime with Ryan's like you know what do we call this because he was in a system like that before he saw this is this now so I think just the you know translation of a rosetta stone there help but just overall standpoint of adding a great guy that's a great coach that's been around that's he's going to supplement the room every time you add something new to the room then that makes the room better it makes you individually better oh look how he does that maybe I could do that maybe I can bring that to my meeting room maybe I can bring that to communication to the staff or to the kids or whatever it is because he's done it for a long time and he's done a high level for a long time so it's good to add
that guy to us and then continue as us to rest the staff for me and Brian and Key and and everybody just learning and growing with that well I mean what does he see it's good to have fresh eyes come in that maybe you know you're getting a routine and you're getting a rhythm and all of sudden football you know he's one of those guys I think goes into categories forgotten a lot of football more football and some people have learned in their life but no his he I believe he coached every position on the field both sides of the ball through his whole career so as he looks up and he writes when he's talking about well this will linebacker's going to do that then he might have coach sat at Columbia right or this is what the three-text going to read on a down block of attack all because he's coached the offensive line and he's been a coordinator for a long time so just a really good vision of big picture understanding and you know the next step and not
just being right now yeah it's a like if you know she think different about tech right yeah he's competing his butt off I mean he's kind of living that way you know that's why we have that the the the red line over there when you cross the line you know of course they talk about that here like that it's the game doesn't care you're off the field you got to come out and step out and do your job it doesn't care about anything off the field right that can sound really negative and harsh but then it also if you just spin your tone like isn't it beautiful that the game doesn't care it doesn't care your skin color your socioeconomic background where you've come from if you just want to do it the right way in the 53 and a third the game will love you back you know and so I think it's the approach mentally the guys take that way so yeah for tegrate he's he's he's taking that approach
like he he wants you can't predict the future but you can prepare for it Arizona State University is building degrees for what's ahead programs designed around emerging fields taught by faculty whose research is shaping our future not just teaching about it it's why we've been ranked number one in innovation for more than a decade your future is worth preparing for and you don't have to prepare alone become future ready explore more than 400 programs at as you online dot as you dot edu that's a degree better ranked number one in innovation 11th consecutive years Arizona State University isn't just ahead of the curve it's creating new paths to success learn from notable clinical and research faculty online that's a degree better explore programs at as you online dot as you dot edu cal she's own CEO says it himself and yes two thirds of people on cal sheet lose money so what does it take to be in the other third you have to do extensive amount of research to be good there are people that spend copious amount of money time resources energy they've dedicated
their lives to basically becoming good at it all that and still and yes two thirds of people on cal sheet lose money lose money lose money that's cal sheet in their own CEOs words go to www.fairpredicts.com to learn more to come in and be a guy so he's fighting and clawing and scratching every day so when he makes a mistake he's trying to correct it when he does it well he's trying to enhance it and that's what competitive people do and that's what he showed up to do so I that's good that he said that what's his command on the field been like as a center it is that difficult when you're coming into a new offensive line to have that or is there something innate about the center position if you've been experienced at it like he has where you kind of have that I guess a command on field over with any offensive line so I should say it over it's all over again you're saying the comfort of center with who now uh it's sad okay yeah I'm saying like how his his command of the field been and hasn't been difficult I guess to adjust for him if he's to have a certain level of on field command you know at that center yeah I mean if the on command is just great communication
getting everybody on same page um yes having a bunch of banked reps helps but then when you do come into a new offense just like we talked you know chip a little bit earlier um you know he might have called it yellow and we call it green or something I don't just make it stuff up but the transition of that in your head to get going with that but yeah the comfort of having a ball on your hand having a guy I mean you talk about that acclimatization of football like play one handed and have you know tie leak this far from your face you better have command of something you know and so you got to understand the communication and the technique and those things there um so yeah I think him coming into a new place the game's not as fast as it probably would be for a younger guy um but also there's mistakes there that he can learn from and grow from and same day he's you know the the one thing we're not having concerns with or we're not driving right now as the guys just competing and and trying to get better after a mistake or like we say a tag we're enhancing as they've done some stuff really well and he's he's adapted to that really well hard to say he's from all center uh this spring is it's the same percent and how do you assess
their building by center versus guard they both have been rumping at center yeah um for the competition aspect could they roll out and play guard yeah probably both of them could um how do you assess that you just got to give them a bunch of guard reps but if you send guys out too much that way then that's not good coaching you know so um we got a good plan with everybody those two guys included as we're moving ahead um but yeah they've been they've been really working at center position right now both of them no I have it obviously came after spring practice here how has he been this spring uh it kind of speak to how what the challenge must have been for him last year from not having spring practice stepping in playing that position yeah uh same you know he's been here not even a four year yet so um coming in the summer do what he did coming into the fall um and then now I mean the same with him sound like a broken record
I think the game's slowing down for him those mistakes that may have showed up or the questions that he had through the fall and as we got going through the season those are starting to erase a little bit uh which is good um you know his communication level is just talking more that's probably the best thing that he's done so far he's a highly highly talented guy we're just developing that skills and discipline and and does go into communication so as he communicates and talks um that's probably the biggest thing I've seen from him which I think you know volume and communication equals confidence and so he's playing much more confident right now obviously he has talent he also would have a few plays a game or you know the penalty or whatever do you see them reduce those uh-huh a bunch yes coach thank you very much hey sure thanks guys thank you thank you chef thank you chef all right folks we will come back when's communication I think that's about the big thing like when you're in a big game but you got to be able you know calling out like a pressure might come and stuff like that so it's a winnest
ball right folks we have talent hey not 20 yes just a hundred percent effort and just work hard like well obviously like there's more to it but those are the things that he wants to do he wants to play fast play physical that's a semi I pick at every day coming out here it gets the best to all the stuff that was throwing me all the stuff out of the adjust to uh definitely but I kind of like when I come in here I knew coach fry and then the staff like they were gonna they're gonna definitely like scope me into the player like yeah scope me into that yeah like they know like scope I mean like just kind of make me into that type of player I mean the development factor from coach fry that I mean getting these like I didn't even it's like
magic almost so I mean I'm just kind of keep keep going with him and keep riding with it and I guess we'll see I'm gonna keep picking at it and I guess yeah I would say sure but I mean I can't really take credit for something like that you know what I like that is you know the man above kind of put that in my dream so I'm just running game changing or nuance whatever you want to call it with chip kelly in charge what if you noticed this little bit little little nuances or stuff maybe like little things I mean the little things add up to big things right yeah I mean yeah well where do you think you guys were lacking at some point last year in certain some of those matchups I mean it was a whole new line so I mean
yeah I know the side camera shoot each other but other than that it was I mean those are hard game nothing's gonna be like for sure what's going on you know you can have some part time yeah did Missouri test y'all about as well as anybody just about yeah yeah they're pretty pretty well what what did you know coming out of there y'all had to get fixed uh to be honest I felt like we just tried to go out there and just play hard like obviously we know number six it was a really good player so we just try to make sure if you either back go as much possible so that's really we can try to go too yeah so as a left tackle like I feel like the number one job is make sure nobody gets to the product and that's something I try to do make sure nobody kind of get around me or go through the main thing just keep the product in the other areas a lot more you have to be able to be a well on the player you know more people in the run and stuff like that but like that's not one of the biggest things not sure if for that's for nobody just one one block whenever you uh I was essentially something that I was like yeah so I mean we got I mean yeah the maybe deal I mean go through always twist in and stuff like that so in the run no twist is so you just
kind of like I guess you just got a really state technically sound and somewhat I'm trying to do just if you if you're going to get some Mitchell Mell much this spring and stuff what what stands out about him obviously he came back from a couple of knee knee injuries and stuff and but what's just jumped out at you back yeah you wouldn't even know he had too many decisions I mean he's so like the way he rushes it's it's so like it's his signature rush like it's something that you can't it's probably the hard it's probably like the hardest person I've had to block here yeah if I'm being honest like he's very twitchy great with his hands amazing get off and he has that sneaky power if you're not really like setting for it he'll get you so and everyone to get your take you know you came here from San Diego State your center uh the guy's transferred in Seth McLaughlin whether he starts or not we'll see right or no he's from Alabama he's an amazing you how college football teams are put together anymore I mean uh because he could be a key thing and what does that just tell you about the game these days I mean yeah I mean it can go anywhere I mean like Seth is a great player I mean he tells me like you know stuff that they did differently
abandoned stuff like that and I try to take some of like maybe some advice he has because he's been getting a college football for a little longer than me so yeah he seemed like a grown-up then yeah he comes across that way then yeah what's the line of the line this year I'm so much to go like what's the mindset of a position uh play fast play physical I mean there's obviously more that we're working on we're learning like each other to be honest I guess like you know the right side is like kind of like going a little bit I mean not with fire but like you know we have like some people that compete I mean we're all competing I know I am and stuff like that so I just um we're just trying to play hard in play. How sure most of the way through this is how helpful is how necessarily really is spring yeah I it's very nice there especially when you kind of got a new OC and stuff like that it's best to kind of get you know comfortable with the scheme now then maybe like post-acadabra's in like in like a few weeks and yet you've got everyone so uh I mean Don he's like dude I owe Don a lot like he's an amazing player he gives me
like inside of him just but it's like Notre Dame I've never been like more nervous for a game with another name I mean I just kind of talked to him he said we got it keep doing what you do and you got to oh yeah especially the the everything with you know people just trying to talk to you saying so we're soft and sack well commenting on my girlfriend's post of yeah and it's all out great man it's kind of crazy to see but at the same time like understand their passion for us to win so I get that I I didn't think it was um some my standard um I thought I was thinking too much uh and not playing um and I deleted my social media so um I got other people who control my social media now so I don't I don't do any of that any of that so yeah yeah yeah yeah did it feel like that to you and did it
change any of the how you guys were processing this going in? Yeah no um I think the conbow was a little different because Matt moved the center so like it was kind of a new piece to the puzzle I guess you could say um it was difficult because you're trying to get comfortable and you get comfortable with car center and then they change it to Matt um but I mean the cotton bowl was kind of a learning curve for all of us with Matt being at center did it did it did it did it feel like it all wiped you guys like giving back all those the progress you had made of it was here but did it did it add to kind of the chip on the shoulder or what you guys had the room still coming into the tube? I think the second one you said the chip on the shoulder um because I mean the defense locked it down that game and we didn't produce anything we went back and watched it and were like this is this isn't good enough as in our standard so you can say like a oh yeah immediately I yeah like after this practice how am I gonna immediately watch it um break it down talk to the try talk to Donnie all those guys to see what they what they're seeing um how
I could improve on this and stuff like that for me I usually watch myself and then on on whole entire often time for me I didn't like it um I thought it was disgusting for my performance and then for the offense wine I thought we just should have cleaned it up a little bit more than what it was um yeah I guess you could say that yeah yeah um it was just like because you're on your guy and it's like what the hell's going on like what's what's what's happening back there because you don't have it eyes in your back your head so yeah hey uh uh tecger was just here a minute ago and I'm just a picture tecger you go there's there's a big time offensive line right yeah yeah yeah and he said basically an approach to this spring or whatever he's nobody cares nobody cares you know what you're going through what your challenges might be etc you know yeah what did you see this different about him I mean
I think his approach his approach to um coming on the field practicing and not just taking another rep just going and emphasizing that specific rep like okay I gotta get to my spot and I gotta punch yeah that is what's improved so much about it I like your hat too I'm a big golfer yeah I know I know I work just for you did you go there yeah I'm a I do ball I'm a ball of oh that's sick are you going out to Pinehurst oh yeah that's sick yeah number two I'm a grandville's got like four holes just like Pinehurst yeah I like going to watch him Memorial too I'm a big golfer I love golf hey get back to tecger though yeah what could he as rise being in this depth pool here uh for you guys I think it could be huge um he steps up um and plays and I think tecger could be a big time player he just got to get um like he said taking that approach to the field and being a professional every single day will help him be the person who's going he's going to be yeah I got this request from somebody else to ask you what are your top five foods
Jerry top five foods um oh god am I on a diet like am I in football or is it like I'm 40 years old and you don't give it to you want it without gaining any calories okay so um I'm going to go restaurants I'm not going to go food I'm going to go number five would probably be waterbigger number four would be hardies three um drop three were sitting numbers two I don't know I like sitting down um dominoes is number three number two is McDonald's and number one's in and out what about barbecue heaven and uh uh uh for one who is a king of heroes oh yeah that we're in good too yeah I like that one I don't know I guess I'm not a big barbecue guy because I have it so much we talked about you know thinking too much on the field and not just playing how do you get better um I think just comes with more of watching the game breaking it down um in the film room and then on the field when you're playing you're just um constantly going through it and then
like all right just play if this happens I don't care just go and go hard yeah yeah um there's a lot of things go through your head free snap but at the end of the guitar it's you versus him and I'm just like all right this guy's not going to get there yeah um he's creative he's very creative in everything overall as a aspect of offense um I can't get too much into detail about that yeah um but um coach Kelly brings a new perspective and um he's a great person and a great human being really really super good coach all right Josh thank you buddy thank you I'm gonna turn around and come in and try to catch on the fly it's time that takes a lot of time and attention um I'm just thankful for you know my great great coach and staff and great getting it around me guys you're back then starting off with you know rock those guys to cade um I think
there's going to be an example of the way there's was a time blocking and being entitled here at Ohio State and I've been this you know thankful to be able to have that example we fell away what are you waiting at it to 35 to 40 what we got to 45 yeah well it wasn't great um he's been good and somebody that's came in um humble and just ready to work that's been like the only words that I have for him not not a minute just many words but he's here to get up here to work and he's done just that and I'm just we got to have you learned a lot yeah I think essentially that's the that's the culture of our room it's we come off the ball violent we're looking as hard as we can we'll clean up the details out so that's kind of our mindset going into it and uh yeah yeah that's a um it starts off with like you kind of got to it starts off
tuning out the outside noise um and what other people have to say about it and it's really good for mindset I kind of look at it as if it's like a drop in a bucket you know if I got a big bucket um there's no one thing I'm going to do to to make this bucket full it's it's a daily thing where I put one drop in in a day and you look back over a year two years three years look back and they're like man I've gotten a lot better so like I said I'm just very thankful for the unit um the guys that I have around me pushed me very hard and I'm just thankful you mentioned that the development this part of tennis what was it but challenging for you to be able to do the play at the bottom yeah I'd say um definitely the size component you know you can't you got to be someone that's you know when the you got to be big you got the strong you got to be fast there's a lot of jobs that you don't do um it's a very asking job you need to um block the big some of the biggest guys in the field but also run routes off some of the smallest guys we've been feeling and so I think just thankful just to be out here and do exactly that what was it like to get that shot the other day front of the pro scouts run routes catch balls oh yeah show off yeah no there's a good opportunity
um I think some of the big you know region behind it we're just kind of giving those guys out there that were at pro day we have limited numbers so just get out there and give those guys and we're either but maybe the opportunity to get to go out there in front of scouts um I think that's a pretty good deal and you're taking only a quarterbacks to this point the quarterback battle is going on what what what's been your take on will for example get to know him yeah and then uh and of course david i think the line said that we have body around here is ironing shopperning iron so that's kind of like it's not just you know one room it's from top to bottom throughout this whole team no matter what position you are we're here to work and i think we're all here to make each other better whether it's in a quarterback room or tight in the room we're running back room offense versus defense coach for his coach doesn't matter we're all just you know iron and shopper and iron especially this time of year in spring ball we're not doing too much game planning for next week which we're really just spending this time to get better and uh build just build a good foundation for ourselves it's time to work on boom forward if you've seen will will how we're fitting in more and more is the practice of going on you know getting to know everybody and all like I mean I've always been spinner for a while no sorry yeah no I think I think I think I
think I think I think as times goes no matter where you are you start to adapt and start getting used to the um what we got going on here and so it's good to have thanks what's it been like yeah I'd say um when it comes to that I think it's all the glory to the Lord and I decided to give my life completely to the Lord a little over a year ago and that kind of really changed my outlook on the way that I approach football um it's no longer something that I idolize it's just something that I do and I think from the time of my life where I stopped you know compartmentalizing who God was in my life God wasn't there something that I do on Sundays or something that I do in a Bible study it was something it went from what I do to who I am and so now I embody that as who I am and so some of the fruits of the spirit is peace patience and kindness and so those are kind of the things that I started to embody on this on this journey I think it's easy to kind of
compartmentalize football away from faith but ultimately it's all one it's all one so it's giving me a spirit of patience peace and joy with the guys around me and so I'm just I'm thankful to be here um but I like being quite honest I just I know for a fact I wouldn't be where I'm at right now and I know in the house I look it in you know I was like you know where are you right now but I wouldn't be where I'm at you know right now if it wasn't for my you know relationship with the Lord um it really came into my life you know changed around for the better G what did you see from Bennett Christian last year how do you know that suspension yeah I think he did a great job a lot of perseverance I think that's no matter who you are we kind of hear news like that that you're going to be out for a year that's hard no matter where you are I'm really proud of him because he you know he came up he came to show up every single day and he got better you got better the easy thing to do in that kind of situation is to throw in the towel be like man you know you know forget this or I'll get better next year but I saw the drive at him one thing I see
not every day you showed up he got better I'm proud of Bennett I'm proud of this unit I mean yeah I don't know I don't really know how to answer that question because if you go from one unit to another unit the moment you trade units you're no longer in the unit you are initially and so you're you're now a tight end so I mean chance of that question I think the time that I went from in the receiving it to the tight end unit is the moment I became not okay I kept in Wilson the coach Wilson was my coach coach I was my coach and I was a receiver it's just different I mean it's it's two different roles I think I'd say to answer that question the moment that I decided to come to play tight ends the moment I couldn't tie in and so now over the years I've gotten better at playing the position but the moment that I
transferred over I've been a tight end and you know I'm excited to be a tight end another position I'd rather play the buck us yeah leaders and how we want this offense to look like in some of the ideas that we may have as well so it's it's been a really cool transition you talk about the transitions you're third offense in three years probably your fourth and six years yeah how do you not kind of build up some barriers yeah man I got to do this again right I think you know human nature is always ranked number one in innovation 11 consecutive years Arizona State University isn't just ahead of the curve it's creating new paths to success learn from notable clinical and research faculty online that's a degree better explore programs at asu online dot asu dot edu calcizone CEO says it himself and yes two thirds of people on calciz lose money so what does it take to be in the other third you have to do extensive amount of research to be good there are people that
spend copious amount of money time resources energy they've dedicated their lives to basically becoming good at it all that and still and yes two thirds of people on calciz lose money lose money lose money that's calciz in their own CEOs words go to www.fairpredics.com to learn more a factor in whatever you do in life but I think I try to make a conscious choice of coming in with a new year mentality each and every year and I think it's easy because we've had so many changes and it's been great working with Marcus and Jaden and Jeff and Sam all of everybody like it's been great with working with all the quarterbacks and I just have a mentality of not really being complacent like I try to really focus on the things that I I can come back better at this year and I've been working my my butt off to do that so I think the easy thing and when I was younger you're like you just want that consistency you know I mean like you want that something you could depend
on but like life isn't life isn't always like that so I've been reinvigorated because of just the energy that DQ brings in to our building each and every day and the coaches as well like it's fun competing you know what I mean and sometimes I could get lost in the grind but I think the reason why you make it here at this level is because you you fall in love with the competition of it and I think the competition breathes the success because that is really where you the iron truly sharpens iron so you know other guys are going to make plays but you get excited to go in there and and know that the next day we're going to go right back after the defense so for myself I'm just looking forward to continue to grow with the quarterbacks that we have I'm in year six now which is extreme blessing and leader one of the leaders in our room and I just try to take the bull by the horns with that and so that's really been my focus and you know I'm excited for another year to us it's looked like you're being more vocal on the
sidelines to help young guys exactly something you decided this offseason or I think that's been a part of my maturation process as a leader I've always seen myself as somebody that was a a leader by example but from coaches and other teammates I've had over the years guys like to hear what I have to say for whatever reason sometimes you know and I think the biggest thing where I've tried to figure out where I fit in with my vocal leadership is I never wanted to be like a dictator you know I mean I never wanted to tell guys what to do or be a yellow or things like that like when I say something I wanted to have power I wanted to have meaning and I hope you know the guys would feel the same way if they were to ask them that question because I want to see all these guys when man like it's it's hard to make it in this league and stay in a career and so anyway I could help the receivers the DBs I'm talking to some alignment Johnny who's who's rehabbing his foot you know I mean like everybody has a role and everybody has a different story and path and so if I could share
what I've been through my testimony to help them or do things that kind of slow down the process I'm gonna try to do that because we need everybody from the rookies to the 10-year vets to make this thing work so more so I try to speak to what I know and and really those honest conversations that I try to have with guys where they know I'm coming from a good place and I think I'm not the type of guy where I'm just going to talk in at them like if they see something like I could take a coaching point from Luke McCaffrey I could take a coaching point from Deami from Jahan from Marcus from anybody you know like I think that's what makes you a great player when you can really be coachable from anybody and not take it from a personal standpoint. Hi. How are you doing? Good. Going back to what you were saying about Cliff and how was he as a teacher in teaching all this? Yeah I mean I think he does a really great job of making things simple first and foremost he doesn't over-coach and I think that's the trust that he has in our group and his coaches our position
coaches to fill in the details so we'll have an install meeting and it'll be a good amount of time but then our position coaches will have time and we'll make it specific to that position and so then we'll come in and have a walkthrough and then after that we'll have another walkthrough and so I don't think there's been a time where I've come out here and I'm kind of worried about what I got you know what I mean and when you get into certain offices there could be so many details where you could be overwhelmed and I think then it forces it kind of separates guys in a sense that like one guy may study more than another guy but when you have these these sessions that we have where we're having an installs in the morning we're having two walkthroughs and then we're coming on the field and doing it like I think you notice a lot of guys are playing a lot faster and more confident because he's keeping it simple but also he's very particular in what he's expecting but it's not a lot so there's not a pressure of to get it right but at the same time you know it's expected of you and you know you're going to have the tools given to you to be successful out there on the field
and this offseason just the totality of change from front office players coaches the turf field I mean what what does that been like for you just to see what's going on? It's been fun you know I think from Mr. Harrison the entire ownership group down to Adam Peters down to DQ down to Jada who he drafted and bringing in Marcus and Jeff and all those guys and down to leaders we have on our team I think it was extremely specific on the way they tried to build this thing going into this year first having the right people bringing in leaders bringing in guys who love to compete first thing that DQ said when he came here was and his first meeting like if you love to compete this is going to be the place for you and I love it you know I mean I love bags and going at it with the DBs every day like the little mundane stuff can seem a little boring but that's I think that was the where you make the gains during the offseason where you're really focused on I'm hey like I'm gonna I'm gonna give all I got for this day and I'm gonna get better and then I'm gonna I'm gonna learn from the film and come back tomorrow and ready to do it again and he also
understands like the the benefits of having breaks like he's giving us breaks we've had you know weeks off here and there that we can compose ourselves but then come back and give it all we got you know what I mean and when you got a coach that understands the physicality of an entire season where you guys do need breaks by the same time we're going to get after it it makes it fun as a leader because you can take that to your room and be like yo we got these we got this week you know I mean that's extremely important but you know we have this little break coming up where you're going to get your your mind and your body and your soul right so coming into this season I'm really optimistic of what we can be this year and I think it started with the foundation that the ownership group and the entire staff has built and now it's on myself as a leader to continue to hone that in into the locker room but I think it's great because we have so many great leaders from all across the league who have won and hey we got Bobby Wagner in there you know I mean I asked a hall of fame or so like you know being able to have kind of guys like that that you can lean on that can sometimes take over that leadership role where it doesn't fall on one person I think it's
extremely refreshing and knowing that everybody's on the same page and the message is the same allows you to go out there with confidence and always expect to know you. Terry you seem to spend many of your off seasons learning about things beyond football, hobbies, what have you, did you do anything this whole season so far to hobbies or increase your knowledge of this the world around you. Let's see the question. Play a lot of golf. That day just keeps my competitive juices flowing. Planning the wedding that's going well and I just been grinding like honestly you know I mean I've been hungry this all season like I started working out you know pretty early and you start to see guys like coming back and it's just fun to like to be here and compete and feel like everybody's on the same page you know what I mean like and so for me I'm a grind every off season but just this one just feels like it's the start of something you know new and special and the
foundation of is extremely important and to be a part of that to have a hand in that you know it's an honor you know and I put a lot of expectation on myself to come out here and be the guy that I know I'm capable of and also like take him the next step and being somebody that our quarterbacks that can trust and believe in so this all season was pretty simple for me it was just really about you know working and grinding and getting better you talked about Jayden before and so far I know we haven't seen everything but in terms of his his arm strength the throws he's making anything surprising so far about the types of his ability in that regard definitely I think after the second or third crosser that he threw I started telling receivers like hey you gotta get your head around you know I mean because again each quarterback throws the ball definitely sees the field differently so sometimes on crossers a lot of quarterbacks may like to see you cross the ball and get into that open zone over there if it's man flattened off they like to see you get open for him he has a really good anticipation over the middle of the field where he can make those throws and give you a
chance to catch and run and he's really accountable too like we had to play today where he felt like he missed me and you know it's not a big deal at all you know I mean him and I could talk to those things and there's been a play that I've talked to him about I could do a better job but again like that open that open form of communication from a rookie I think is it's very rare and I think it speaks to the confidence he knows who he is but he's also not afraid to say when he's wrong and he knows he needs room to improve but his touch on the D-Balls is amazing you know I love getting extra reps after practice with him we're just catching the topping of a D-Ball as big for me you know I mean I get to track the ball over my shoulder and it's big for him to be able to get used to dropping the ball in the bucket but he just naturally has an ability to throw the ball he sees the windows really well and now he's just you know continue to get adjusted to the speed in the past rush I think he's these reps that he's getting are unbelievable during 11-11 because he's getting to feel pain and all in and DA and Cleveland Farrow like we got some dogs up there who
are gonna come after him you know what I mean and we got some great guys up front who are gonna protect them and so these reps I feel like are even better than just 7-0-7 and 7-0-7 I think he could do in the sleep to be fair like he throws the ball really well but when you get this 11-11 two-minute drill you're putting them in game like situations and I'm looking at him in his eye I'm like we play real ball now like we we we playing you know I mean and you just see no no anxiousness in his game in his demeanor which is extremely exciting and and then you know he's extremely lighthearted and he's always smiling so he's joking with lime and D-Line he's just cool with everybody and like I said like for a rookie quarterback to come in like that where guys are gravitating to him and he's not afraid to be who he is that's dope I think he has a bright future for himself the tough losses the tough seasons can weigh on a player sure you're entering the prime of your career Jay kind of mentioned it last year all he cares about is winning he wants to win now is there a sense of urgency you obviously always want to win yeah knowing that
you know you're you're getting to the prime your career like you want to win now yeah I think that's a fair question I think you know you start to evaluate when you I'm in year six and you know how fast it goes and I try not to put the cart before the horse were looking too far ahead by at the same time you do want to win you want to be a part of a winning culture and have a chance to win the Super Bowl and the playoffs and all those things like that's why we we do this personally and I'm just excited with being a part of a organization in an environment where now like everybody's on the same page in the in the in the message is uniform and it speaks from the top down and it reflects the guys that they're bringing in you know all the guys that they brought in are guys who are hungry who are competitors who not only fighting for spots but we want to help us win games and when you're around an environment like that like that that makes you excited makes you hopeful and you know you don't know how it's going to turn out until we start playing games but
the foundation is extremely important and I think this offseason we've really done a great job of building that they have and then when a coach Quinn guy here building with this team so I feel like we're going to be going into this offseason really knowing we all got to do individually become ready for camp but the message is clear to come back to camp ready to compete and and be ready to win thanks Derek appreciate you guys one of the funniest guys on the team right now I think you talked about earlier than we can trying to balance out but we're not getting too high on your emotion how does that motivation for you show up on an idea that basically it's more preparation more film how to what does that look like for you yeah it's just really an edge and everything you do I feel like and you know carrying that that kind of pissed off mentality I mean obviously not letting it affect you in a negative way but you know making it you know reminds you hey like I'm going to go the
extra inch here I'm gonna you know see if I can find something extra on film late at night or I'm gonna you know go over this you know sheet again all the plays one more time like all these little things that you know I just you know we just can't let that what happened last time happened again we're earlier this week I was talking about how you played back here football he attended the replaying of the Rose Bowl you grew up in big ten country what does it mean to take part in this game what does it mean game mean to you and growing up it's a tell man it's it's crazy to you know that God has blessed me and put me in this position to be here and be the quarterback in the Rose Bowl you know a game that I grew up watching every single year some unbelievable games that I've watched in the Rose Bowl some classics and just to be a part of it is a blessing and I think we're all we're all humbled to be here and we're all understanding of how unbelievable this opportunity is and we're not taking it lightly because you know again it's a business trip and you know the only thing that we're looking at is you know we win this game we go on a playing top role so you know
it's really exciting it's you know crazy that we're here and that we're the part of this but you know can't let it be too big you know gotta go out there play football can you do that I think so I think you know you go back and watch the film and you know I just didn't you know and I'm I'm critical of myself and I think we all are here you know but I just look at it and I'm like man I don't think anyone this year beat us you know I think we beat ourselves every time and you know you watch and you know we had to turn over you know in our own 20-hour ride and they got the kick you know that's two possession just the first half and then obviously the way the game ended like another and we're still one point away and that's that's what what hurts and it was a you know a hostile environment in their place you know I'm just I'm just thankful that you know I said this this is the other day but we're thankful that we get through the do you feel like it's looking back the two weeks ago you can see you feel like there's a
confidence about this we it may be what they do show you you mean yeah put it all together yeah what is your sense of the team from that aspect is it feel a little bit different yeah I think you know a game like that you know in sales confidence because it shows us we're capable but you can't be complacency and it can never be comfortability it has to be confidence and drive and that's what it has to urge us to be like man like we can do this when we play it our best I don't think it was anyone in the country that can hang with us but we have to be on our game we have to make sure that we can't let anything a lot of people take those words loving you I just you know at the end of the day I just want to keep the keep the ball moving down the field you know getting in a rhythm I think it's going to be big for us and I think we did a really good job at that in Tennessee game weathering storm a little bit early in in the
early calls that we got the bell to sound in that game and kept us going but regardless we kept the drive building for me keeping us on schedule taking care of the ball and making sure that we can hurt on third down in our situation we did you know we do all that all that stuff obviously for me you know I want to leave these guys and drive drive the machine because we got when we're on our stuff I mean we're on our stop so we just got to make sure that we finish our preparation right these at least last two days and go out there and put our best thanks for the guys you come out this way I'm talking about this you know just recently talking about how what I want to do for the wellness I want to bring that home energy the he brought right so last year of course I'm sure you're doing for years but the year when I spent my own he brought a lot of energy excitement and happiness in the room which is natural energy to where I would have to focus on me you know I didn't have to make sure other other
guys would you know feel some type of way when it came in here because hump brought that and I have a hump not here but I saw when you did for a room I want to be that guy to make sure I was an amptical practice everybody's high more taking a field team on period you know it's a low day or something you know it's a different but like I want to make it feel like home time like you're parents to trip I want to bring that because that's what me and hump did with each other we would have each other do like do probably walk or flip so I want to do that I want to bring that energy on make bring more guys you know I want to do that from day one you know I kind of I wanted to do that from day one um um obviously it's that time I spent the obviously before I started um just being in my self-just thinking about what the room needs you know because I don't know I knew who will as one of leaders you know my mom's
friends is that we need a guy like that is going to make sure the O-R-I just picked up we're ready to go every day I was held accountable little things don't happen to practice and people are saying we think and how I believe maybe different than somebody else maybe you know I like to practice at least like the legal positivity you know I mean so but he the energy had would be on just though I'd have to be honest like to so I was kind of how I wanted to go on living my whole life on again I felt team captain like specifically and I felt I wasn't captain high school wasn't a captain college but I want to make a joke on high school so I feel like I'm not going to be captain like he's that I felt yeah but that would be awesome you know but you know that happens I'd be great but not either way I want to assume a role as a captain from perspective of guys until they were big or word and get back in that way yeah I mean I can't say
that I mean I guess the biggest thing is that I felt like how you used to me in the past but it didn't take just the first day LTAs it took training left and right once this season because I know what was going to be the champion so I took a lot of reps just to give back to feeling like myself for a day LTAs and then that whole first week but now like today specifically just changing some small things with my feet that visits I come up along coach asking things I can do my feet to get to that to sell my nutritional angle that I love to sit on I thought I felt great already but I felt even better so I need more exercises tomorrow now I'm getting my feet back and how I like the right side and on the left side so alongside I mean obviously I feel like in the league whether I left the right you're still going in Premier guys obviously the high expectations for the left
and high tackle but there's definitely like the level of energy and like the expectation definitely taking the human strength because now tonight the blind side that's the that's the tackle world you know so yeah I would say in terms of communication as far as this even outside of the facility you just stuff like that like really creating that but tackle quarterback body even more off the field I think has been something that's even good cool I got the text one day you know yeah I've been training both I've been training both you know I I asked after the season they're like honestly you know we'll talk to you so play the season I just got a text on having what happens with the creativity then so I was like you know what I had a whole season right tackle so if I get the word I'm going I'm standing right tackle I'll just do what I did before I'm built on that but I saw I was like I might as well as train
the left tackle now as if I'm going to be left tackle and I'd rather do that than train all the right time with the call hey you know what I mean so I'm like let me just prepare an advance I'll say yeah let's go you know I think occasionally I'm very down there be a lot of twist I was just not like it's a automatic and I think that was my mindset for like the first half of the season like I didn't have to go it's again with some pros like oh my gosh they did that I kind of figured like okay like this is this is the type of rush man again this is how this guy usually rushes I get the vibe this is how the ends like the rush you know tackles that first year guys you got the premier patch on already you know what it was gonna be already you know will be every stunt and honestly just knowing that's kind of an advantage too so you're not you're not you're not you're not oh the problem twist on my side it was never air goblin but it come out the hot like three plays in a row in two minutes I do that it was a boy you know what I mean I'm
watching more everybody else and he rarely really goes out there occasionally I was like you know what I mean so that's kind of it's also kind of an advantage in the way but it's also exciting okay I'm gonna get the hardest to look you know those are real real reps you know the thing so really out on our way to kind of process that I was like hey when I tell me let me know about I'm just gonna train it I was training all left so TAs I guess if I didn't hear anything about TAs I came in like so you know what I mean because just like I'm cool with training both continue I would be cool training both continually but I feel like anybody any position will be like okay like you want to as soon as possible give your feet kind of settle in your hips settle in your hands so then certain kind of what we've been part of the age work both very how to you
no but they're definitely but in terms of the development it was definitely a lot faster to stand on one side but I think having that the weeks that we had to transition with over you know CalShi's own CEO says it himself and yes two thirds of people on CalShi lose money so what does it take to be in the other third you have to do extensive amount of research to be good there are people that spend copious amount of money time resources energy they've dedicated their lives to basically becoming good at it all that and still and yes two thirds of people on CalShi lose money lose money lose money that's CalShi in their own CEOs words go to www.fairpredics.com to learn more
my mom says you know just go out there Monday just dominate the person I'm confronting me uh you know just do what I've been doing for the last uh two to three weeks I say um but you know they play man on man so I'm just ready for the challenge uh I mean feels good uh just say somebody going out there and playing man on man guess Ohio State receivers it's something crazy but you know we just ready for the challenge uh they say they're not chasing a game plan but we got to go out there and show them the reason why not the play man on man I mean I don't really if I be on the cover I be on the cover me it's not really a big deal to me may it definitely be a blessing for sure just to be on the cover of a game but you know it's not
really a dream of mine it's a dream of mine but I don't really think too much of it I mean no not yet uh probably hit me after this easy um no just no planning uh call us football players as a freshman uh planning the Rose Bowl as a freshman planning a card and bow not in the national championship I mean it's a blessing for sure but I haven't hit me yet my favorite catch I would say we play Michigan State on the one I call over two defenders definitely probably my favorite for sure or you go the one from Iowa as I say and as a parliament too
I don't I mean yeah like you said it's pretty first grade of me having a game that I had in the Rose Bowl and they're coming to the Cardinal just doing different things chasing their scheme up for uh gives me um but I mean like you said whatever I could do to make the I mean help the team win it's not really a big deal for me and long as we win that's all I really care about and you got a national championship it means a lot uh we put a lot of work in this uh this season um we have highs we have lows we have people cutting us out um but we hear now we just ready to pull
the show Monday oh yeah uh first the win is uh national championship because that means a lot um you see everything that he bent through this year people uh saying should be fired and this is the third but uh mean you see everything that he bent through this year I mean I seen everything I he bent through this year on see everything people saying about him on Twitter um I wasn't here he first got the head coach and job but I know this year for sure we definitely got to win this for him uh I mean it's a lot uh a lot of people in the league I should say I can't really say who but I mean you had guys like oh they're you had guys like uh oh they're you got
stepfather digs means a lot of uh my good time is Chris Carter just a lot of you know guys are playing in that field and stuff like that but yeah really them gods for sure uh no just keep going um you got it you next step for sure uh really I really that for sure uh like a physical defense uh like like you said like people say like they like to play man they not changing their scheme so we're just ready for the challenge uh like you said probably the best defense we probably go see all year and we just gotta be ready to go out there Monday and just put on the show yeah
uh I'm excited for will uh him uh first coming here in Ohio State January our first workout we have together uh I mean just everything that we did through the season um I mean I'm just happy for will for him to be in this position right now but we got to finish the job and that's uh winner Nadio Monday uh I mean it's it's pretty funny um them saying that because I'm I'm just only a freshman but um it's a pleasure for sure people to even say that but I got two three more years left for callers and I'm just focused on calls right now I'm not really worried about the NFL right now uh it's it's very special for me uh just being a freshman at Plumman National Stage like a peer for national titles something that I dreamed of as a very young kid um I'm just happy to be
here and I just can't wait to put on some Monday for you guys uh I mean all of us used we just sitting on the bench and we just see him hit the quarter back the ball come out and we all just got up and just started you know jumping up and down we all excited um happy for jacking that moment and we just knew that that moment like yeah this we going to the daddy for sure yep me it still is a lot um me you know going from high school or winning three-state championships uh shamanama donna then you know coming to high school uh just competing for national charter right now me just so that I've picked uh two great schools um but I'm happy to be here
and I just came with the pool of shaman then the coolest person um I mean you got a lot I can't really say just a specific person you got a lot of great guys re-challenged to lead like um oh there you have guys like step on digs um a lot of other places were just getting cut off my mom but really really them two guys will show oh there let us step on digs yeah yeah um I mean like they say they play man so I mean I'm just ready for the challenge just get ready to go out there Monday and just no put them so thank you
uh the vice-geno had gave me um I said just keep going first um you uh he I know the reason why I'm here and me y'all like he said just keep going first and just no keep the mating and mating and the best corner I faced this year um I mean I faced a lot of great corners uh I can't really say but yeah I faced a great lot of great corners here really put a name on it my dream vacation is uh turns and k-coats oh good are you yeah
uh I say both respect and frustration as well um but I mean I thought they come out there and tributy me and they say stick it to whatever they're doing our year and that's playing man covers uh we just ready for the challenge uh uh pretty good group uh Christian Gary 29th is a great corner uh 15 uh Lenard Moore two great guys are right there um very physical but you know we all highest never received us so we ready for the challenge uh I say just no understanding the defense understanding the defense uh understanding the
game plan understand what coach Kelly is trying to get done um I mean just coming in I felt I progressed from my first game against Akron to now for I got better each and every week um me being slowed down a lot for me um but yeah really just no understanding differences and no understanding what they're trying to do to me for sure you uh them two guys great part of the best we go see all year for sure um two two physical guys um but you know we're ready we're ready for the challenge that they're coming with and that's to play man oh man and you know we ready to go on my day yeah yeah um me environment is pretty crazy uh seeing all these cameras uh something I never thought I'd see them alive but uh it's a blessing for sure this is the business position right now
uh I mean we just had a prayer prayer uh led meeting and you know we all they all just we all discussed the issues because they discussed these issues and you know we just want the work uh me not two and a half weeks we had off before Tennessee game and we just came out there um Tennessee game and we played with a chip on our chip on our shoulder um all throughout the playoffs and we go continue to play with that chip on our shoulder in uh that championship on Monday uh do you know how that very uh impactful uh yeah the very impact on my career I should say you know just going to his games as a uh very young kid seven eight years old um him playing with him playing for West Virginia and they played Clemson Orange Bull down in Miami um me just going to let this see his games it's like yeah I definitely want to play on this stage and I can uh wait till I get to know that moment for sure there are you okay uh because they really just in his own his own little space uh he's just walking around
trying to get his mind right trying to get his mind ready for the game um but you know he all he just gave everybody hype in the locker room and you know just trying to get us ready to go to win the game yeah oh yeah oh yeah for sure I mean uh you uh go play man against Ohio State receivers I mean just be ready uh because you know we definitely go come out there and know uh give our best uh I mean they said not go change what they do so we're just ready for the challenge uh not a year later uh definitely sometime my career college uh but not my first in college I should say um I mean just the better the being this position right now it's you know a blessing or just a yellow key if I'm i mean to be here and no I won't think of for granted I'm ready to go out
there and give him a round yeah yeah uh I mean yeah I was watching that game against was it Georgia I believe yeah I was in that game uh I was pretty sick myself because I was actually committed at that time um so I mean yeah they left it back testing them off um but I mean we ready to go out there Monday to redeem myself and they'll just put putting show Monday oh I mean me I just laughed um but you know that's what they do they're not gonna change what they do
uh just because we're Ohio State so when you gotta go out they're putting no putting no uh why not to play uh man no man it gets us so when you gotta go out there show them Monday so you said again I'm sorry uh my journey here to Ohio State repair me a lot from National Championship me just going through everything that I've been through uh my first guy here all uh uh Matt Jules all the hard workouts that we had all the hard practices um me just preparing all of us for this moment and no I'm just ready to go out there and give it up my all on Monday okay okay yeah we just squeezed this yeah one or nine
200 me is big and strong yeah yeah I'll go you know what's 20 yeah that's great yeah pretty good no problem you uh when I part of the most is the one against Michigan State when I caught up with two defenders on
on air saw and on party lag one or the one after that I should say or you go the one against Iowa part of them three part of my best one for sure oh I mean just we'll put in the ball in my area and I just know how to make a play for um even though somebody was grabbing my face I just know I still how to make a play because the ball touched my hand so I mean just in the ball and the other thing I have to make the play no matter how the ball comes at me you after a big game um I mean we really they really feed us cheekful a or piece after the game so it's really either cheekful a or or piece so yeah probably cheekful a for sure
yeah uh it went it went pretty good everybody just uh uh speaking with their thing is uh going right and what they think is wrong um let's just a lot of the older guys if we're in their opinions on what we need to do to uh come to get as a team um but you know that me and deathly uh helped us in a in a big way because it helped us on the field as well because we played a great football right now and we just like to tune out on Monday yeah it definitely got emotional uh can't really say uh what really was said because that's no prayers only and coaches only but it would definitely some stuff said that um people take people took and uh went with it and that's the reason we're playing the way we're playing right now you know
uh yeah make help me a lot this year um him being our older guy in the room um me help me in cartenel as well and Brendan and his and all the guys in our scene room as well me just a great guy as well it's very smart uh me make just been a big part of the reason that I'm having to see that I'm having a well because he's been a big you know older guy been there been a lot of great guys in that room like Chris a lot of way Garrett Wilson Marvin Harrison Jr. Jackson Slick Mejibba so he's seeing all the grace I've been through there and me teaching us the right thing and the right way and in the buck out way for sure I love it that that means they don't know what's coming out of the next we got 12 personnel 11 personnel you get the two of us in the world the same gotta stop it all what have you made of the quarterbacks of three of them were not too much I feel like they all come in here working I feel like everybody's making their doors making their paths and everybody making their directions what did you take away from last season when the next game that was it when the next game go out there
outside of the beaten man in front of you and then came out with a national championship on the advantage spring balls about proving yesterday the visual when he worked on this thing holding on everything I'm trying to get my game as well as playing spirit I'm trying to come out to fill it on we hear about either the has started to step off and realize we've had leaders from last year that came back I feel like we got new guys that stepped up into their roles and their roles and around the team that would become leaders being a leader you all always have to be vocal you can have say examples on the field or it can be vocal we both I was happy for Gia I see the hope I heard grind and I see him last year grinding getting an extra work there's ball is ball we come out here play ball he's out here doing a pro day yesterday I just see them ready go make some real money do you feel like you're a different player now going into
this year and maybe you were last year I feel like every year I've just improved on my overall game blocking and catching to system wise people used that word but I feel like I'm just overall better I came in here ready to go how much does it push you when you're in a room with guys like Max and Will and that it that you know you've got to be on your game if you're going to get on the field man I feel like Arya is starting by Arya every day come in and work and they go push me every day to work and it's just like I'm gonna do the like an actor's before but it's not crowded room you got you got a first order I love more honestly match match Claire match LeBlanc both of them I love what's you flashed any time you're just the year work at all come together I feel like Arya was my year but hey you're gonna see this year I'm ready to come out here and put on a show for the Bugatti nation I feel like everybody on the field is ready to put on a show we're trying to go back and back you got a play quite a bit though last year tonight what
did you pick up from all of that especially on in a championship run you know and they were counting on you honestly just be ready at any time honestly you can be throwing at any time just like I was I probably had some rest while I was just throwing and you got to get it done and if you don't get it done they're gonna find somebody who has to do it no wait I think we asked you this year we definitely see what you pressed as I tied in you know the all of that names I don't know how even a year ago honestly over the spring and some of this I'll see you then I feel like I've told them my body a lot and I got stronger in the way we're doing well I've also got a little bit faster so I can get in another break some of the better and just the mine part of the game the middle part of the game if you got even better in town I mean how would you describe that I said again the the mine part it well I feel like it's a lot more feel I say like the tight ends we come in here five o'clock every other day do walk through more film which is more students at the game now we're
like that I feel like it was just a exciting play uh I was the last read on it like the very last read on it I don't go out I came down with the kiss so we did the first down you know it was the most fun thank you but I still had a great work a year six yards of carry you know things like that I think it was like nine touchdowns ten including the playoffs CalShe's own CEO says it himself and yes two thirds of people on CalShe lose money so what does it take to be in the other third you have to do extensive amount of research to be good there are people that spend copious amount of money time resources energy they've dedicated their lives to basically becoming good at it all that and still and yes two thirds of people on CalShe lose money lose money lose money that's CalShe in their own CEOs words go to www.fairpredicts.com to learn more and so there's always been like all right you guys let me show my talent
shine a little bit like even when I had the knee so I had the knee right a lot of people don't know like I didn't get hurt again whenever I got you know you got cleaned up so I went down in 21 right had the injuries the knee injury and then came back later the next year and I and I played the first few games and I just feel there was a lot of scar tissue in there so I had to get cleaned up I didn't get hurt again I could have played the whole year but I got it cleaned up so I can feel like me and so after I got that cleaned up I the first two games back from the injury I had over 120 yards rushing right and then went on had great great ending of the year you know 100 total yards in the play-out game we lost which I hate the most it's not gonna matter me I want to win but then come back the next year hurt again like 20 killies so two really unfortunate injuries but that's just a guy's plan you know and I think that the storm is now over you know and I do think that I'll be able to shine my light to the whole world are you concerned that
that you have that label I could care less because I do I do I know this out there because as it as it should be it should be I got hurt two major injuries back they're not back to back years but you know so I haven't been on the field as much as I should that's true that is true but it's not like I'm having these little little dinky injuries and sitting out it's something I can't control literally so that's why I'm not bothered by it like yeah I am injury poem you could say that you know but I do think that the chargers are getting a guy that's gonna be healthy from now on you know guy will it and it's gonna be great and I do think that it's gonna be it's gonna be a great however many years here like knowing that when you're out there you're very productive how much confidence does that give you that really all you need is not a need for all the confidence in the world you know the way I work I want to say just from the numbers
but just the way I work my work ethic you know and my relationship with Jesus is like I have the most confidence when I step out there because I do know like if he grants me the health it's over with is I don't think I'll be you know I think it'll be a great year or whatever a couple of years however many years he grants me great help you know and I think just the work ethic my prayer and all that stuff that's what help me have that confidence with the numbers will be there and they might be higher after this year you know Zen and it's crazy to think about because I had six point yards or six yards per carry you know so we'll see oh yeah yeah yeah I play with Bradley I play with him you know I know Slater I know all the I know all the guys you know and I'm I'm excited I think it's like I said earlier it's a talented group you know we just got put together win some games because that's what I came through for I wouldn't I wouldn't I wouldn't say a part
of the recruitment but like whenever I decide I was going to sign it was great to have him in the room yeah we're great we're we have a great relationship that's he's like my brother so I think it's accomplished compliment each other very well you know um he can do a lot of stuff too you know a lot of people think he's just power power power but I think he has some other parts of a game too which it it'll be great because I feel like I could do everything and when one is get tired we can roll it in we keep rolling we win some games so when you the two of you keep going how do you think it's going to look the world will be that partnership that back there I know that's a hard question um how do I think I think it'll look beautiful you know a lot of people call this a passive league but I think you got to run the ball to win a super wall you know if you look at the the teams win the super ball they can run the ball they can control the clock and so if we're both good it'll look great beautiful
uh I would I would describe it as you know a great offense um I think he he gives a quarter he's going to give the quarterback a lot of options he's going to give the running back a lot of options he's going to give the receiver a lot of options you know and I think it'll be I think it's going to be great she's often it's going to be amazing when we talk to him you know I was like why do you want to build something good rush offenses throughout your career and you said that one part of it is just you got to call the place you got to call it as a running back you know how much confidence how much you say it doesn't give you you know you have a play collar that's going to stick with it and allow you and the offense blind to give you a rhythm of the game gives me a lot of excitement you know um it's going to be like I say it's fun to play it as often it's you know um CalShi's own CEO says it himself and yes two thirds of people on CalShi lose money so what does it take to be in the other third you have to do extensive amount of research to be good there are people that spend copious amount of money time resources energy they've dedicated their
lives to basically becoming good at it all that and still and yes two thirds of people on CalShi lose money lose money lose money that's CalShi in their own CEOs words go to www.fairpredics.com to learn more and I think he does have some good things in the past game too but like you said he sticks with the run and that's that's the identity you you want to offer his that has an identity right you don't want to be looking everywhere else to find your your identity you want you want to have it and so I think his office has that and the guy she builds and puts in there it it compliments that I did see so I think it's going to be great look I ain't gonna answer any of the four if it's up to me yes look because I had this problem like three two years three years ago I'm thinking I'm four go I think I'm ready to go and then next you know I'm on PUP like hey look some stuff it but my prey pay gray so but I don't know hopefully I can start I think I'm ready to start you know
the beginning training camp but that's not up to me as I've learned I wouldn't say that I think I've been I've been in some great organizations and I think this this organization is a great organization and the training staff is great and so they just want what's best for me you know and they're they're taking care of me which that's what you want in an organization and so that's where that comes from which I appreciate it like I really appreciate that you know because I'm a type of guy like I work really hard so maybe sometime I'm blind to you know the danger of something so I appreciate it but like I said if it's up to me yeah I'm out there but never know well any frustration for you during the heading into pre-agency you know dealing with with rehab and not you know having one at full season of paid for the production to go out there was there any part of that where you're like catatourishing you know I did for the open market with the different situations you know I like it I like how would I say this
I like it the hard way but not you know I like it the hard way I like it I like trial and tribulations so I mean the dice that I was given the role was I was coming off a third Achilles and that was that was the Lord's plan so it was beauty in that like I was comfortable I was caught like there was multiple teams you know I wasn't it wasn't like I didn't have any other team but I was comfortable and sitting back and just enjoying the process letting myself get fully healed so whenever that team whoever I would sign with who now is the Chargers is going to get the best me you know and I think people all around the league know that like okay this guy okay is a high risk high reward type thing right not even a high risk of low risk because you it's a business right so I got hurt last year so not as much money and he's be throwing that but I
think everyone around the league knows that whenever I am on the field the numbers don't lie and so they know that and a lot of teams were like are here you can we give you this but we want you to be healthy so when I'm healthy it's gonna be great this is the chance that I've been giving here I'm so grateful and I know that's gonna be they won't be they won't regret it are you the type of person that likes to prove people wrong like you've done a couple things like the high risk high reward injury from you know like are you the type of person that really tries to prove people wrong no I hear it I see it it's pretty cool like you'll never see me unless I'm just like in a bad mood you never see me like oh like if I have a great game or a great year like I have this wonderful year I ain't gonna go back and you're like yeah yeah what happened no because I don't care like you're eventually see like I'm like I'm a guy that's really good so I ain't worry about that
but I'm proving myself right that I am one of the best in the league right so forget all the naysayers and people will talk about being injury prone because whenever I have this great year it's gonna be forgotten you know so why why give that energy yeah I was you know we just with him you know he's he's a great guy I mean he was in my class I remember seeing him we were at an award show because I was a dog walker or finalist and I'm like I've seen him play but I didn't know he was that tall like I didn't know he was like six years I won a first arm this was years ago in college I'm like am this is me tall like it's cool though like I like I never really got to I ain't gonna lie I thought it was gonna be kind of you know you know nerdy they're ways he's cool dude really bad no face to him you know well it's just cuz like the last three years has been disappointed at the end of the season so
I feel like we put more work in I thought like that's what we're missing we're just putting more work in and he's got to do that throughout the summer the spring the fall and then he's got a show on the field tell like I just asked Jen this when you take a you still like in a mold or in your practice and you look at it who all is on the deep bits and you look at the person L-chains we're failing to come in with sunny moving up in the post-war line of spring with all the the guys in the description coming back what's your like view of what's out there on deep bits and how it maybe allows you to do some things you didn't do it uh it's kind of just like I don't want to like hype our heads so much but I kind of look like a like a legendary defense kind of I feel like we got playmakers everywhere and then moving sunny down I think that's a great move for him you know it's a big athletic dude um he can play in the box he can play like safety thing that's just showing him how like versus how he is and Caleb you know you've seen Caleb how he plays he's an animal he's only a sophomore I think and I feel like the guys we brought back you know we all can we're all dominant so I feel like
as a collective you never want to be like unstoppable so confident this problem no well there's a part of that too and as I mentioned they're about pacing yourself like if you if there's that much self belief then there's also that part of going to build depth you know case you have interest case you have issues so how do you look at spring in terms of getting the guys that are next in line as prepared to keep that standard high I think you just got to set a great example for the young guys and just showing them how to how to practice how to like watch film how to take care of their body because those are the things you're going to need to like go on this deep run and I think it's like 17 games or something that we're not we add in games so the young guys are going to have to play we can't just play fit the games the snap that's not going to happen so you is going to keep working kind of keep running give me shape
yeah definitely I got to get way better shape than I've been and I feel like it was kind of like it was a joke but of course I needed those snaps because the years before I wasn't really playing as much so I just wanted to get like more experience under my belt so I can know bring younger guys with me because I've been now he's running you know almost a second man up behind you and tie what have you seen well as a workhorse he he's going to stay quiet you're going to work hard and that's what I love about him he focuses he don't really talk much he's going to get the job done do a job right rarely has any mistakes what would be a successful season a national championship I ring when all the games we don't want to lose anything we got a mindset that we can't be beat and we just got to go show it seems like you guys expect a national championship every year
this year even more so you guys have all come back for this you guys have all decided like enough is enough is that it's keep feeling difference or is it not really any difference it's just the same work it's definitely a difference everyone working harder we noticed our last run like we most of us don't have any years after this so we got to go go bigger going home and we not trying to go finish big we know what you guys think of Michigan but when you look at what they did they won the national championship and you guys took them down to the final minute right you know what I mean I mean you you were right there something goes a little different you guys could have been one that came against that does that tell you anything about like that hey you guys want to win a national championship but you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the national championship last year like you're that close so I'm saying we just like work harder that's that's kind of coach makes of saying you know nobody cares just work harder like those no one played Georgia is the same thing last last play you know they went on the win in 90 so we just
got to get over that hump at the end of the season I think we'll be fine how frustrating is that you're that close against the last two national title of the year uh of course as you know it's frustrating but you can't change the outcome you can't really dwell on it you just got to you know come back and work harder do things better than you did last year and hopefully the outcome will change is that as you get older you kind of learned I thought that was working hard but then you always find out there's a little more you could have been doing yeah definitely I mean that's how that's what growing up is basically in college and I thought freshman year I was working as hard as I could but not look back at it I really wasn't working hard at all compared to what I'm doing now so just to learn anything 80 85 I mean I can it's all on me I just I think it's a little higher I was just trying to be funny but I mean it's all on me I just got to run harder in shape
I think I think I think we I definitely can last I was just you know we got to get the young guys to come along with us we can't play 50 snaps again that's just too much on our bodies uh just everybody like online D line we got to get those younger guys to play you know get that pieces on the D line and the online and everywhere else so we can last that long run after that last year I don't know if any of us were really expected to play that next time oh yeah I did unless we were like winning by like a lot uh I thought like there are no moments you know I can go sit down or something but we're playing them big games like you know in order to end to or north those kind of games of course I want to be because I know I can contribute and I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I can get the job done what stands out about Kaden McDonald and he got the kid you guys it looks like a kid oh yeah definitely K-Mack is a K-Mack's animal y'all you haven't really seen it yet but in practice he
shows all the time he's just he's just he's grown right now he has a work I think he just has to get you know in the playbook things like that you guys are about the exact same size listen you're both listen to six three you're three twenty seven he's three twenty six yeah he's I kind of look at him like my my junior but you know K-Mack he's gonna be a great player he's got to develop more and get into playbook so really a lot on you older guy there's that large group of young guys and then there's the seniors in the back is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys yeah definitely we got to be leaders um like I say we got to have them play this year we can't just play all the snaps they got to get in there and get some work and we got to get them right during the all season so they can play and not just play they want to like contribute like make plays tackle sex yeah they're definitely some big dudes um and they all work hard I'm really seeing much
as only a day two I'm not a bad one but throughout the workouts they've been working hard you know they they're determined I have to say that and it looks like they're ready to work at me so it feels like there's a lot of great defense that you have big athletic defense attack to get heat up space but also move you know right that is that is that important maybe for a great defense to have guys like you that have some balls but also a great team I think that is definitely I think if you look at the last uh couple of national championship winners uh like team of Northe you know they got two good uh detacled two athletic detacles look at Georgia two athletic detacles I think that's definitely neat if you want to go on a big run and beat those big teams okay if you think about that you they won't defied by the defense attack it's like what's Georgia Jordan Davis and Janet Carter and let's miss again it's Chris Jenkins come on for questions you might as well as how I mean you understand this because you play it
but I feel like some time I don't know are people realizing how important defense tackles are a little bit more than they used to I think so uh I think they're starting to develop to develop more and more of these like freakish detacles yeah like in the combine just now you seeing like those guys they're moving four to four seven eights and things like that so we'll see and when you think it when you think about the freakish attack attack how do you think you fit into that all of that kind of player you watch that and say yeah that's me yeah definitely I think I'm top-notch when it comes to detacles but I don't want to you know get a big head but you know watch the comment I watch it do the drills I have to see like you're looking like my film so I think I'm up there all those artists you're going Frank you're not doing as much a weapon how do you work on that do you have like a goal in mind I don't remember how many you have left you're like you have a goal in mind how many do you want to have good decisions
I mean as many as I can have I think I have more than that but I think they're counseling I think they're gonna count some of them and it's some of them where I like just listed so but I think we work on drills matching the hand I think that's uh goes big and uh what we do is a D line you know just affecting the quarterback is anywhere you can it's just great for the defense you know just that little thing you cover it is I you know he might throw it a little bit to the left to our player so let's something that you really really have to work on you I think I just have like a like a eye for the ball comment I kind of just look at the quarterback and just I see him like load up I just try to get in his way and sometimes he throws it to me I don't know how your experience with your high state of work next to you you're a bad dumb fastest I mean they get frustrated by you know we're a team you know we're just good
big time to grow you know you don't have to have the the pig mentality of problem of of instant gratification you know you can develop and grow so and sometimes you may be and behind a guy that's a really good player is nothing wrong with developing and growing and playing when your time is right and if the time is right right now the freshman like what's your main do you play early you know so we try to also sell that you know we care about them as people and try to prepare you for life after football so it's bigger than just football going to prepare you for life whether it's the NFL or on with a regular career in the workforce we want you to prepare you as a young man and we try to sell that and preach that to the parents with domain having that in fact you mentioned growing all these different spots do you anticipate you know there wasn't a lot of rotation among the cornerbacks last year when everyone was healthy do you anticipate maybe growing him through the rest guys here with the longer season potentially yeah we play it about here you know I mean we see how it goes by time we get in the camp but you know obviously he's earning his stripes so you know I mean when you earn your stripes you know a lot of job to create
opportunities for you you know I mean we have to see how it goes with all the other stuff you know once we get closer to the season and we're getting the game plan stuff but he's doing a great job and he's and he's taking a great step forward CalShe's own CEO says it himself and he has two thirds of people on CalShe lose money so what does it take to be in the other third you have to do extensive amount of research to be good there are people that spend copious amount of money time resources energy they've dedicated their lives to basically becoming good at it all that and still and yes two thirds of people on CalShe lose money lose money that's CalShe in their own CEOs words go to www.fairpredics.com to learn more you know it's been there for a while I've been doing that for a long time it's all about
relationship if you develop real relationship and you know authentic in your communication and you have honest feedback and you have you know direct teaching the guys that have value and character and they appreciate that stuff they're embrace that so but they have to know you care and you have to know that it's real and they have to know that you you're really concerned about there where being as a young man and when you get close to him it's been a lot of time with him off the field you could coach him hard and you can you can you can say truthful things to him and then they embrace it and you have real conversation because you know the only goal is to help them get better as a young man how's that dynamic change yeah it's them balanced up a little bit now that goes with great competition we have the we go against the best receivers and call it football so that helps escalate your growth process because if you don't figure it out real fast you're getting embarrassed so that competition but
what happened with that I guys start competing I guys start growing I guys got better and now is even up a little bit so where you get really good work at practice today you know I mean so it's competitive it's fun those guys both on both sides of all care about each other so it's great competition and they all real close so you know I mean it's that stuff that gets us better that will prepare for Saturday I know it's just it's gonna competitive man they got the best group in the country that you're going against every day so you have to bring it every day you know I mean so they we got a great quarterback room we got a great receiver room running backs are really good so when you out there going against them is deep so you have to be ready for it and obviously man we see a lot of good stuff with with with stay in coach Kelly doing over there and so it prepares you a lot and it helps us grow yeah oh yeah because you know that's where you get better our shop is our so you know you
know you get to see that every day at practice that helps you grow it's no better thing to go against every day than to see that on a daily basis I'm also near room besides George looking at to play that like this one we just moving a lot of guys around we watch our practice we have a lot of guys in there right now you know we pop up there are four different guys in there obviously the rents holes in there germane is in there Caleb miles we have about four or five guys moving around right now we just try things out in spring ball see what it fit you know see what things work together so there's no probably some more guys in there you know we move it around to try to just get the right fit throughout the NSE how it goes by time we get ready start the season he can run any strong you know I mean he's fast very serious about his business he's big it's 200 pounds he can run he's strong he's conscientious not me and he's starting to grow and he's starting to get get better with it you know I mean so we look for big things for him to spring what do you want to see from here this spring keep competing you know I mean now he's made the the transition um competing today you know I mean start going
in that transition is all just like I'm in germane last year you're throwing the fire you let him go you compete you go by time we get out of the end of training camp you'll be them figure it out yeah I want that but now you just throw it all at him compete continuing to grow continue to learn he has the skill set he has to the left now you just got to put it all together and it takes time to do that um and hopefully you see that by time we get in the training camp with your spring you kind of click for germane last year and you start to see and perform a little better in practice is that like a benchmark for where you want here and to be by the middle of spring does he have to be at a certain point where you want it to start clicking yeah by time you start getting about two weeks from now that last week you know because it takes time because there's a lot of stuff going on but you know by time you get into that last week of spring ball you you look to start seeing the things that you look for show up and then you know you get another evaluation again we're getting the training camp see if this stuff carried on to make sure we go up for starting in September what's your assessment of growth? He's made now that he's kind of got his few under one defense and what do you like about him and that knickles? He's very
conscientious he's smart he can run he's tough um he's made the adjustment because he's out of Europe on his belt so now you can see he's not making a lot of mistakes he competes he's real conscientious and uh and he has a physical presence so the growth has been really good and we look to continue that uh throughout spring coach thank you very much no the the the culture here is real uh coach day does a great job of building the culture um our room is close knit the guys on defense are real close those guys want to come back they have an agenda you know we want to come back they want to come back and and and and and and walk away with something so um it didn't shock me but but it's a good environment for them too you know I mean that's when you see those guys come back that's a testimony to the the the culture that's set here their brotherhood the environment and how coach day he runs the program for those do's to want to come back because we go at it it's hard it's not easy it's not easy but what what we do so
fact they come back and do that is a testament to how he runs the program. as far as intensity how would you evaluate your games tonight? yeah my goal was just to come out um play as hard as I could um it was a little weird last week for the first time in my career playing a game that doesn't necessarily mean anything in terms of playoff contention and I kind of had to check myself and and this week come in with a mindset of every game matters and um and we need to put the best product out there that we can and um and that's what I try to do. later announced it was a good push or you looked at it looking into your work and push up when you returned you didn't seem shaken up right after you kind of just talk about what happened. yes Sam just tried to get it on it and uh caught me it was more of like a stinger play thing
but the ref wanted me to go to the tent so I had to go answer some questions. um found in your helmet? who's like jammed yeah my neck? you are helmet I know that you've got a sort of a different helmet. help you? yeah maybe when it hits the top like that it's not as good but probably these guys 11 months ago kind of crushed their dreams. do you get the sense they're kind of a different team or and also that they this was a very important game for them to win? I don't think they're that different. I think they've had a ton of injuries on defense which hurts them but the mentality of the head coach you could see it throughout everybody um it's really a cool team uh I could just see from afar that it's probably a fun team to play for um and they've they come out and they play to win every game and I respect that. I've put so much emphasis on the ball all meetings and takeaways and I think you've got
two since the by-week. is there any accounting for that? I mean is there so many different things that go into a turnover or takeaway? how do you wrap your brand around? it goes into every level the defense um when you have your opportunity I know we had two against uh Stafford um that could have made I mean if maybe if we get those it sparks a bunch of other ones so you just have to make your um make your plays when they're there and then um just be in being the right spots and I don't think we've done a great job of that this year. the last side wasn't tonight but the soul is all pro. did you want that matchup? would you would you think about that matchup? it's good he's a really good player and um yeah I wanted to see where I'm at against him. and you ever seen anything like the jamesen williams touched out or it's popped back to him and you've seen something like that or I was in the tent so I had no idea that happened. it could just play in this game when we saw
a kind of a misdirection sprinted all the way across the field to make the play. did you see the play? and I think it was it the one gives cut back yeah had like a ten-yard cushion and he ran by me like I was didn't exist um and I tried to sprint and I just was just like I don't have this and thankfully Mustafa is a heat seeking missile and um and he made the play so I mean I think we came in with the right mindset as a team just myself it felt a little like dead energy wise um but yeah I was a learning uh a moment for me to learn and and make sure that I come in with the right mindset every single week. there's a lot of plays where you guys get
to get the whole past breakups and it'll be like a couple plays in the row and then there's an explosive about what can you believe in or on about the inconsistency? yeah I mean we did we did get them to the second third and longs um and then yeah they they would make a big play and you definitely want to capitalize when you when you back them up like that we didn't do that tonight and that's why they scored 40 points. I'm sure yeah I'm sure. Oh yeah for sure uh you had guys like Chris Carter uh guys like Michael Talman's uh really new two guys for sure um me uh Michael Talman was talking to me before the game um with a Rose Bowl A Chris Carter in after the game as well. I mean just them giving me advice uh just
telling me keep going first and you know just keep doing what I've been doing the whole year um I mean I'm got bugger I legend so definitely uh look at them guys for sure make sure to spare. uh it means a lot uh me just a kid from Miami uh just be able to play an actual championship as a first man uh something that I dream of as a kid and I'm here now and there's K-rated K can't wait to put on a show Monday he said he did not come uh I mean the Tissue note like he says may uh crazy each and every week uh playing um but you know you can't can't let it get to my head I should say um let me just football at the end of the day but you know just you know happy business with this one
oh none of us think we could be covered man oh man um oh man we'll actually talk about this yesterday as well but you know I mean that's what they do that's what they do I mean we just go out there you know play our game and no short of reason why not to play man oh man so two four three One I go far. Let's go My mom said no just go out there Monday. I just dominate the person I'm confronting me
No just do what I've been doing for the last Two to three weeks I should say but you know they play man on man, so I'm just ready for the challenge Yeah, I mean Feels good. Just say somebody going out there and play man on man. Guess how your state receivers is something crazy But you know we just ready for the challenge. They say they're not chasing a game play But we gotta go out there and show them the reason why not to play man on man Yeah I mean I don't really man if I be on the cover I be on the cover me It's not really a big deal to me May definitely be a blessing for sure just to be on the cover of a game But you know it's not really a dream of mine. It's a dream of mine, but I don't really think too much of it I
Mean no not yet probably hit me after this easy no just no planning Carlos football players as a freshman Planning the Rose Bowl as a freshman Playing a card and bow and not in national championship. I mean it's a blessing for sure, but I haven't hit me yet My favorite catch I would say we play Michigan State The one I call the two defenders definitely probably my favorite for sure or you go The one from Iowa as I say and as a part of them too I Don't I mean yeah, like you said it's pretty frustrated me having the game that I had in the Rose Bowl
And they're coming to the Cardinal just them doing different things chasing their scheme up for against me But I mean like you said whatever I could do to make me hug the team when it's not really a big deal for me As long as we win that's all I really care about and it got us to national championship I Means a lot we put a lot of work in this this is it We have highs we have lows. We have people kind of out But we hear now we just read it put on a show Monday Oh Yeah
First of when this national championship because there was means a lot I mean you see everything that he bent through this year People say he should be fired and this died a third, but I mean you see everything that he bent through this year. I mean I see everything I had been through this year See everything people saying my him on Twitter. I wasn't here We first got the head coach and job, but I know this year for sure we definitely got to win this for him I mean it's a lot a lot of people in the league. I should say I can't really say who but I mean you had guys like oh there you had guys like Oh There you had Stefan Diggs means a lot of my good Tom is Chris Carter just a lot of no guys I played in NFL and stuff like that But yeah, really them guys for sure No, just keep going on you got it you net stuff for sure really I really that
Cal she's own CEO says it himself and yes two thirds of people on Cal she lose money So what does it take to be in the other third you have to do extensive amount of research to be good There are people that spend copious amount of money time resources energy. They dedicated their lives to basically becoming good at it All that and still and yes two thirds of people on Cal she lose money lose money lose money That's Cal she in their own CEOs words Go to www.fairpredics.com to learn more Like a physical defense like you said like people say like they like to play man. They're not changing their scheme So we're just ready for the challenge Like you said probably the best defense we probably go see all year and we just gotta be ready to go out there Monday and just put on the show I'm excited for will him first coming here in Ohio State January our first workout we had together
Me just everything that we did through the season Me I'm just happy for him to be in this position right now, but we got a financial job and that's the winning at the old Monday I Mean it's pretty funny them saying that because I'm just only a freshman, but Missed a blessing for sure people to even say that but I got two three more years left of colors And I'm just focus on cars right now. I'm not really worried about the NFL right now It's very special for me just being a freshman and playing the national stage up here for national titles Something that I dreamed of as a very young kid I'm just happy to be here, and I just can't wait to put on some Monday for you guys I
Mean all of us use we'll just sit on the bitch and we just see him hit the quarterback the ball come out and we all just got up and Started no jumping up and down. We all excited Happy for jacking that moment. We just knew that that mom like yeah, let's we go on to the daddy for sure Yeah Me instance a lot mean no going from high school when the three state championships Shamanama Donna then you know coming to Ohio State just appear for national child right now me just so that I picked two great schools But I'm happy to be here and it's came with the punishment day
The coolest person I mean you got a lot. I can't really say just a specific person. You got a lot of great guys reach out in the lead like Odell you had guys like stuff on digs a lot of other places were just getting cut off my mom but really really into guys for sure. Oh, Della stuff on it Yeah, yeah I mean like they say they play man, so I mean I'm just ready for the challenge and just get ready to go out there Monday and just no putting the show The vice-general had gave me I said just keep golfers You know, I know the reason why I'm here and
Me like he said just keep golfers and just no keep the main thing the main thing and the best corner offense this year I mean I've faced a lot of great corners. I can't really say but yeah, I face a great daughter. I really put a name on it My dream occasion is a person cake goes Oh Good are you I say both respect and frustration as well But I mean I thought they come out there and triple teaming me and they say you stick it to what they've been doing our year and that's playing man covers
We just ready for the challenge I Pretty good group Christian Gary 29 is a great corner 15 Lenard Moore two great guys are right there Very physical, but you know we all highest never see but so we ready for the challenge I Say just no understanding the different understanding the defense Understanding the game plan understand what coach Kelly is trying to get done I mean just coming in I felt I progress from our first game gets accurate to now For like I better each and every week me being slowed down a lot for me
But yeah, I really just know understanding the versus and no understanding what they're trying to do to me for sure I'm two guys great part of the best we'll see all year for sure two two physical guys But you know we're ready we're ready for the challenge that they're coming with and that's the play man You know we ready to go on Monday Mean the environment is pretty crazy seeing all these cameras Something I never thought I see it in my life, but it's a blessing for sure this the main is position right now I mean we just had a prayer prayer Meeting and you know we all they all this me we all discuss the issues because they discuss issues and you know
Which is what the work? I mean that two and a half weeks we had off before Tennessee game and we just came out there Tennessee game and we play with a chip on a chip on our shoulder All throughout the playoffs and we go continue to play with that chip on our shoulder in a national championship on Monday Oh Do you know how to very impactful? Yeah, the very impact on my career I should say just going to his games as a Very young kid seven eight years old Him playing Westman him playing for West Virginia. They play Clemson Orange boat down in Miami I mean just go there seeing his games. It's like yeah, I definitely want to play on the stage And I can't wait till I get to know that moment for sure Yeah Okay Because they really just in his own his own love space
He's just walking around trying to get his mind right trying to get his mind ready for the game But you know he just get everybody hyping the locker room and you know just trying to get us ready to go to win the game Yeah Oh, yeah, oh yeah for sure I mean Go play man gets Ohio State receivers. I mean just be ready because you know, we definitely go come out there and know Give our best. I mean they said not no change what they do. So we're ready for the talent You Not a year later definitely sometime my career college, but not my first in college I should say I mean just the better the being is position right now. It's no blessing Or just a young kid from Miami to be here, and I won't take it for granted. I'm ready to go out there Monday and give him a call
Yeah, I mean I was watching I gave my gets was it Georgia? I believe yeah, I want to know gear I was pretty sick myself because I was actually committed at that time So I mean yeah, they left a bad nickname off But I mean we ready to go out there Monday to redeem myself, you know just put on a show Monday I mean me I just laugh But you know that's what they do they're not gonna change what they do just because we're Ohio State So I'm gonna go out there and put it on put it on why not to play man on man against us. So we just got go out there shut up my day
He said yeah My journey here to Ohio State repair me a lot for not just shape it should me just going through everything that I've been through My first guy here all the Matt jurals all the hard work guys that we had all the hard practices I mean just preparing all of us for this moment, and I'm just ready to go out there and give it up my all my day Okay, okay Which is squeeze this 200 me is big and strong
You know what's 20 that is pretty good Oh And why not part of like the Moses the one against Michigan State when I caught over two defenders on their side line Party like one or the one after that. I should say or you go the one against Iowa probably them three probably my best ones for sure
Oh, I mean just will put in the ball in my area, and I just know how to make a play for Even though somebody was grabbing my face. I just know I still how to make a play cut the ball touch my hand So I mean just in the ball and everything I have to make the play no matter how the ball comes at me I Have to big gang um, I mean we really they really feed us chick-fil-a or piece after the game So it's really either chick-fil-a or piece. So yeah, probably chick-fil-a Yeah And went and went pretty good everybody just uh
Speaking with their thing is going right in what they think is wrong Which is a lot of the older guys what's in their opinions on what we need to do to cut the get as a team But you know that me and definitely help those in a in a big way because it helped us on the field as well Cuz we played a great football right now and we got to do that one Monday Yeah, definitely got emotional Can't really say what really was said because that's my prayer prayers only and coaches only but it would definitely some stuff said that people take People took and they That's the reason we plan to is right we plan right now Yeah, make help me a lot this year him being our older guy in the room Me help me and carnell as well and Brennan and it's in all the guys in our city room as well Me just a great guy as well very smart I mean make just been a big part of the reason that I'm having to see that I'm having a look cuz he's been a big
You know old the guy been there being a lot of great guys in our room like Chris a lot of way Garrett Wilson Marvin Harrison Jr. Jackson Smith and jibba so he's seeing all the Chris I've been through there And me teaching us the right thing and the right way in the book out way for sure I was reading Me It's got me different not me and I just feel like I had all the offers I had like You know, I feel good. You know, I'm it's like all the hard work and I student
I would say like I got a lot more aggressive and I gave some weight now. I'm pushing 200 pounds now. I don't like how he's talking. Coach Patricia, what have you seen for the day of the town? What has been like for you? He's a great guy. I like him. He's a great guy. He cares about his players. I was so football wise. He's a master in the United Hines. He's football business, you know, in his time being in the NFL. So I thought he was going to fuck you. Whether it's at the starter or occasional piece of what you expect to see from him? Fail of the claim and it's failed. I'm not expecting to add value, you know, from a half of the team and just make players. You feel a lot more popular this year compared to last year? Oh yes, for sure. I feel like I'm starting to give you everything here. I'm just trying to pay off my new last year. I'm not going to make a rules, but it's okay.
What? I was going to say, you know, Ryan set up the big annual screen, starting from scratch in a way. Not letting too much of the shadow of the national team. How was the team really embraced that mindset and see competitive in that mindset? You know, you have one already. CalShe's own CEO says it himself. And he has two thirds of people on CalShe who's money. So what does it take to be in the other third? You have to do extensive amount of research to be good. There are people that spend the most time, time, time resources, energy, dedicated their lives to basically becoming good at it. All that and still. And yes, two thirds of people on CalShe lose money. That's CalShe in their own CEO's words. Go to www.fairpredics.com to learn more. So far so, you know, we're trying to stay determined when I know just how I'm doing. And we're not living in the past anymore. It's like it never happened to the sun with another one. The coach has got to venture their head in the A and B rule. They have to be rules that are thrown in.
Get some reps in another position. Obviously, you know, right now, playing in Stony in the first eight days, trying to, you know, craft myself and just, you know, make myself more versatile for the team. Wherever I go. They get to get some more reps. Right. Obviously, you know, he's living in like a playoff company. So, you know, obviously, the league is just, you know, empty game. You're being on the line. Does this all work? You know, I mean, skipping, skiing better. Thank you. Appreciate you. You know, the lion's, so like there's some stuff. At least we did, you did over there in order to aim that we'll see if we're able to kind of implement some of them here. I'm sure some, maybe not others, depending on what our guys do best. Probably a lot of things to do because it's like it's a fresh start. We do set eyes on them. And I think it's an opportunity to be multiple and use him. And what he does best, you know, is that's the exciting thing. You know, when you really study what coach Patricia has done in the past, is he likes to take like who are like who are our players. And then let's build it around those nights.
And I think CJ has had a helpful winter. I think he's one of those guys. So I'm excited to see how we be creative and use him to the sprint. Does that mean you see how to be like flow is more of an edge defender? Kind of different than you guys. I think, yeah, I think he has that, I think that's exactly what kind of like potential. CJ has his new ability to, you know, get on the edge, move around. The nice thing about that is, is that you're not handicapped just with CJ, doing one thing off the edge. You think you have the ability because he understands consensually zone drops, linebacker terminology, right? You can get really creative with how you use him. But I think he definitely needs to be utilized more as a just go after the cornerback. Go, go be destructive. Go ahead. See about. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I'm not. What about Matt? Is the leader of you guys is coaches. How are you? I see all the people. You guys and how are you seeing that?
How do you feel about the higher? I'm not. I love the higher. I've had a lot of respect for coach Patricia. I've never since he worked me a Marcus out back here. What we were talking about that when he first was in the interview process is kind of how fast time goes. But I'm really excited just to continue to learn. Like I said, like there's some, it's funny because there's some terminology that when I was at Notre Dame, you can use and I can at least speak some of his language with what he's called things before. And you're trying to morph everything together right with these things that we've done. What he knows would do like it's a lot. But he's been incredible with. I think the staff is very organized. He's detailed. You'll have constant clear communication. You know, and they're going to get together at this time and doing it in like a year's sufficient in your role. And it's been a lot like when you're come from outside and you come back into it, and you have to try to catch them up on the recruiting board. And you know, like you have a lot of these conversations.
Okay, what are we looking for at these positions now? How do you see it? Because you don't under one coordinator. You might see a, the mic line back and used to be this. And under this coordinator, well, I think the mic back needs to be this. So you have to have those conversations at every position. And you just kind of keep going through. But I'm just excited to learn. I think the more systems, I mean, look, play the system here in college, play the system. Under Steve Spagnolo, play the system in Tim Walden, play the system under Greg Williams. That is talent. Coach of Galagol and Jim Null. Everyone of those, there's like different terminology for everything. So you're just, you're learning a different language, Colin thing. You know, I mean, there's concepts. And I think it's kind of collect over time. What you think is really good stuff and how you do stuff a big deal, a little different. I'm just really excited to learn from that. I'm telling you success. He seemed very excited over there talking really to me here. Yeah. Coach in college, which whatever. So long.
What's his personality like with you guys? Yeah. He's been great. I mean, his energy is incredible. He's very, he is. He's authentically excited to be back in college football. He's been told there's like a yearning to get back to like the while you got in the coaching, right? Is the impact young people is the impact. He keeps the game of football. And so the few times he's been in front, you know, kind of like talking to the guys in the sense like. He's excited to just teach more. You know what I mean? And kind of ironically, like, you know, simply a lot of things that chips that last year, right? You gotta get back and you're like, man, I'm just excited to. And so he has that excitement. He's been a phenomenal job, I think, of getting to know the players. Just kind of like walking around versus like popping in, making sure that he's in front of them. And they get to know him and he gets to know them. And it's a lot that you can imagine when you come in and you have all these guys, right? And trying to learn all these guys, I'm learning recruiting, trying to learn to staff, trying to learn dynamics, like it's a lot, but he's handled it really well.
You know, he's an old-school ball coach, so he's a grinder, so he's really good job. James, son, he's probably not going to need to do much this spring. How much more can you get done with the young guy? How much on him that? So yeah, I do a lot. But in terms of Ryan Dair, he said, you know, 50%, 75% or whatever. How much more can you get done with the young guys when they're not worried too much about the senior? Yeah, I think, I mean, you're always just looking for competition, especially like at Spring Ball. And that's what it's all about, right? You're trying to have it so cliche, but it's true. Like the Iron Sharpens Iron mentality of you want your run to be super competitive, to where, hey, the guy in front of me makes a play. My next set of four plays, I go out there, I have the on point, right? And it's a constant driving of the room forward. And so, yeah, Sonny gets 50 or how many reps, you know, reps off 50% rubber coach said. And that means more opportunity for somebody else to play, right? So that need more for our values that scheme flexibility with our value.
We're going to pay pierce around. It's that TJ Riley, you like all these guys stove. We're all going to get more ruts. Which I think is great. So we got to do it at this point in the season. But I think, you know, yes, there's still stuff that within their level of Sunday is that he's going to be. Clon to try to get those reps because he's a true pro. And that's been the most enjoyable thing about working with him is like. You get a kid who's played safety his whole life comes to the back yard. He just wants to learn the why behind everything. And, you know, very similar to the fact of Cody that we have guys who are that easy to work with. You're not trying to like not worried about texting anybody in our room. About coming over and trying to learn all, you know what I mean? Like where you at, you know, like they're obsessed with the game of football. They're always around when they're at class. So it's like it makes it really easy as a coach because they're passionate for the game. So strong. You mentioned CJ in terms of the higher math map. Just what can sunny like what do you envision more with him with all of that stuff?
I think I think we just have a lot of guys with a lot of links. It's about sunny styles long. You can run or Valries long. It's crazy because you see sunny. You're like, okay, this guy like. I wish I was built like that when I played and then you see our Val stand next to sunny. You're like, you know what I mean? And then you look across the room like as the room warms up, you're like holy smokes. Like we just have a bunch of guys and that's a lot of credit to make coach make as a phenomenal job. I was just talking to Burm about it like to see even our meteor guys what they looked like when they showed up. Durance like the whole of the whole natty run and they're kind of hanging out during practice. And see the high school bodies to see what they look like today before they go away. And like the shoulders are all like everything is just different. And they've been indoctrinated into the brotherhood.
So I think you know there's just a lot to work with. So what he's really good at right is like he's talked about it. One year he has junior say out willing to get a smite variable. You know Roosevelt Colvin and those guys. And a couple of years later he has Brandon spikes. So he's like, okay, I was just by his police brand at the middle all the time. So he's 26 pounds and he's he always says he was my best nose guard. From Mike backer, right? And then the year after that gets you know got Jamie Collins and Dante high talent. So now we can do a lot of stuff right. So they're not just like, hey, this is what we're doing. We got plenty of them. Hey, here's what we got. Let's utilize it. So that's what spring will be. Well, go in the lab and figure out what that means. I'm sure through spring ball, there'll be like, hey, here's what we do really well as unit. It's just units can be different. Right? We lose a lot of production. So you know, we'll be different. So you kind of got to reform your own identity and. Yeah, we earned that civil bullet big name and mantra.
How many guys can look at our bell? It seems like he's on a very good track. Is that it? What's his ceiling? It's how he's going to start our bell. It's just a lot. But right now he's locked in. He's done a great job becoming a leader. Coming out of his shell. I think I think for the belly, it's all about consistency and just preparation. And I'm proud of our bell, you know, he's through the season. You got way better at. You know, a lot of it's like little things. Just note taking stuff like sometimes if these kids are always on their phones and stuff, not like the meeting runs right thing like that, but just naturally. So like to get out of pen and paper and like. You hear things and to me, oh yeah, I got it. What you do until your dog tired and then you forget, you know what I mean? But when you really understand it, you know what I mean? Like go play faster. He got so much better through the year. Just a lot of that's because of Cody, like becoming a pro. And then now it's like Sonny's pulling him along. He's pulling pain along the pain to fall into DJ and Riley and Eli. So they install it. So I kind of love the competition right now.
The way it's made up. Yeah, that was a great path. How many different guys do you feel like can be in that Mike's spot? Appreciate it. Obviously, losing Cody and now having that. I think that's something that's fluid as we kind of go. Because you know, week one, Sonny actually started out Mike for us. And Sonny smart enough to play them all. Our bell is smart enough to play them all. Here's the smart enough to play them all. And that's also like how do you like depends on what what scheme you're running. Where they how do they be utilized as well? You know what I mean? So you say Mike, my backer, you know, whether it's Tommy, I can very grow up there. Research two different people and Cody's different than those two. So my challenge to like a lot of the guys that come in. So you got to learn both the more you understand about the scheme in general. The faster you will play. You know what I mean? Like if I just sit here and I say, hey, I got to learn Mike.
My drop is this and that's all I need to know. Well, no, football happens so fast and all the shifts and motions that like. If you're out there just playing and you're waiting for a call. And you're just reacting like you're so worried about what's going on on your side of the ball. You didn't recognize that the offense is telling you something's what they're doing. So. If I'm out there and also I'm not getting a call, I know what the call should be. It's like, hey, are we playing? You know, let's go. Now listen, you get it. You can look. I can see, okay, here's what the tight ends doing. That's what the backs doing. Here's what plays are coming. If you just line up and play, it's about our passive. Every time. You know, stand in chance. You got to eliminate plays in your mind by seeing what the offense is doing. Tell you a story every time they line up. They just window dressing. People motion and chance to try to. Okay, are they trying to do man's own indicators? Are they trying to make sure that. They're getting the same formation. They're on the same place. But they just shift the people and then they motion and they move and they don't want you to recognize. So for always worried about what work you don't mean. So the more you know. The faster you can play. You're not sitting there thinking, oh, what do I have for you?
You're reacting to your right now. You have so much challenge to guys like. There's always a no both. So they allow just beyond. On depth of sure guys get you know, if Sunnies only do it in 50 to 75% of the plays. And probably more guys get more will reps than they had because we need. More will bodice is that's technically where Sunnies started. But. Rotate them through. Let the production kind of show what it does. And sometimes you know you'll live with some mistakes just from. Did a new spot that you'll be able to judge to like who's actually. Getting the book you know, who's actually studying. How much of a break have you seen from Sunnies this time of year ago. Through the national championship game. And what's next. Man, I mean, definitely. I know I know Sunnies big goals and should. I do as well for him. To see how far he's come. You know, first thing kind of stands out is just like his. His footwork has gotten so much better.
When you're in the box with a linebacker, you got to be able to. Remember loop thickly say it all the time and you got to be slow until it's time to be fast. When you're twitchy like he is. A lot of times you know, when you're about safety or you're used to pulling the trigger and rolling. You got to learn how to shuffle and not cross over. And he got so much better as a year or not. Think a lot of people question whether he'd be able to hold up physicality wise. And you know, he was he was correct. You know, he's the season guy. He's really good with his hands. He's a really natural ability to snag. We'll keep challenging him. I think he should be a dominant guy in coverage. He needs to be a guy that we can put on a tight end and be like. He's not going to be in catch on the ball. Because he has that athleticism. I think we need a challenge in there. Challenge them. I think everything is just miss a bunch of sunnets. Everybody's urgency in zone coverage. I mean, the urgency with you have to break on the football to close that space. Not at the bulk area. Have so much space on you to cut making this is critical. I think sometimes he's he could be so athletic that you know, you can get away some stuff.
He knows anything that I'm saying right now. Here he knows. So the best part is a lot of times like he'll come to me before film. And I already said that coach on that play. I should have you know what I mean? Like he knows. And the best part is that he's humble enough. Our whole run is that they just want to be they want to be pushed. And they want to be coached. And so the thing that could be asked for right. Like how is that? Like what do you need for me just just keep making sure like you're pushing it. Don't let me settle. Let me settle. And he's probably the best. I'm going to run with them. You look at sunny and our bell. It's kind of your top of the skies right now. Yeah, I mean, I think going into it, you know, I think it's just accomplished the plan. And whatever play was called, whatever maybe just go out there and execute it. One thing we've been preaching is execution is really the motive. You know, I need to be called. But as long as everybody's mindset is has one mentality, which is just go get it. And you know, make sure there's no yard gain. I think that changes the mindset of everybody on the civil bull of defense.
Did they feel like big changes to you all as they were ongoing? I mean, at first, like, you know, it was a tough loss. So you know, as any of you felt like everything was big. But then when you kind of just take your time to look at everything and analyze everything, it was just like, man, we just we just need to keep everything simple. Make everything and just just about us. And you know, not like feel like we're making everything about them. It's, you know, we can dictate what they do. And I think that was the mindset. Did it make Letterman Raw? Yeah. JT, I know you get to watch a little bit of video of Caleb and Nathan and Jordan. What stands out about that group from your vantage point? Oh, they're respected. They're relentless, man. I mean, Nathan, Caleb and I mean, everybody in that BIA core. Yes, they can cover. But you know, when it's time to, you know, stop the run, they'll come down 12 yards out. However, however, however far off the front line, scribbling coming, you know, the other nose in there. And I respect them for that because, you know, there's going to be times where we need them to make them tackles. And I mean, they're displaying it this whole season.
Yeah, how critical are they in a game of this magnitude? Obviously, everybody's critical. But you know what I mean? Yeah. Sort of the last line of the fence, but sometimes the last line of the fence is in the middle of it. Yeah. I mean, they play a huge role. I mean, like you said, it takes everybody from the front four. It's like a check reaction. The front four don't do their job. Then, you know, it falls, you know, the back end. So we off to work as a collective unit. And I think there's a reason that there's 11 of us out there. And, you know, it's crazy if one person is doing their job, then, you know, something can go wrong. But if we just all continue to stay, communication with one another, continue to just lay each other. You know, we have each other's backs and just trust one another. And man, I think that, that, that performance is going to be off the charts. For the rest, Kelly and... CalShe's own CEO says it himself. And yes, two thirds of people on CalShe lose money. So what does it take to be in the other third? You have to do extensive amount of research to be good. There are people that spend the copious amount of money, time, resources, energy. They've dedicated their lives to basically becoming good at it. All that and still. And yes, two thirds of people on CalShe lose money.
