I feel great. I feel great. I'm glad to be back with the team. I've done a lot of research and met with a concussion specialist and they gave me the knowledge that I felt that I needed and everything and I'm not too concerned about it. I know people worry about the number and everything but you know just can't let that affect me. I'm still coming out here. I'm looking forward to getting glad to be back and plan and yeah I can't let the receivers off that easy in this league so looking forward to getting out there and giving them a hard time. I know the green briar you mentioned you hadn't considered wearing the Guardian cap in games. Are you still thinking that route or has your thinking changed on anything regarding your helmet? Yeah definitely definitely. It's definitely so I have tried on a new helmet and got fitted for a new helmet so I'm looking to make a change there. I don't think the helmet I've been in has been that great for me physically but definitely go and do
a new helmet come season time. Did you have to feel any more comfortable as I asked you first day and was uncomfortable? Yeah I got used to it. It was fine so yeah it wasn't no big issue. It was heavy as it was. Yeah yeah no I might wear two caps you know good out there but yeah no I'm good though. You talked about not worrying about it. How difficult is it to kind of block that out of your mind? The potential, the concussion potential that sort of thing and just keep playing the way you do? Yeah I mean for me last say I've done a lot of research I went and met with concussion specialists and like I said they reassured me and gave me the knowledge that I needed but I mean it's not hard at all for me when I got here. I feel I'm a football player that's what I love doing since I was a little kid so that's the only thing I want to do on playing my dream and so when I get out here I don't think about oh I might get hurt or I might get a concussion. I just got there and main focus is winning and having fun out here and so it's not too hard for me to put it behind me. Stuff happening in life, stuff happening in the game that may not
go our way but just about responding and coming out here and having fun. When you see older players you know for previous generations in the game that have had concussions and some of the struggles they're having in their older life. What are these specialists telling you to alleviate any concerns that you may have about the potential of having to deal with those same problems, those formless or current ideas. Yeah that's a great question. I mean a lot of the information and a lot of things before like during the time of those older players are a lot different than the knowledge and information that we have now in. I mean we're able to treat concussions and also back then it's like if you got a concussion they were sending you right back into the game so now it's a lot different. We got a protocol and it gives your brain time to heal and everything so I think things are setting plays now where it's a lot better than before and that time where we're making problems later on so that's why I'm not really too concerned about it.
So you can then do how many recommended to you? Say it again. So how much recommended by the trainer or Michael's dad? No I just wanted to get into a new home. I mean people have a refer to they also don't know how team meeting has said how there's a number of helmets are better than other helmets right now so I just wanted to check those out and see what they are. Is this concussion any more severe than the others you had? No that's one of the other things. I mean I'm not going to give a whole seminar on concussions over here but no it's not necessary more severe. Each concussion like just what I learned each concussion is its own specific concussion and you gotta give that time to heal and then once that's healed and ready to go once you get back out here you're good so it's not like concussions are building on top of each other like you give it time to heal but I think like before what guys were getting trouble with a long time ago is like they get a concussion not fully healed and they go right back out there and playing. Denzel, can you see a side or maybe part of it? Can you just reflect on how you've grown since showing up here in fairly 21? Is it a player of personal or anything? Yeah I've been here for a little while now I've been enjoying every second of it.
I always came in trying to be a captain and trying to lead these guys as best as I can and I definitely feel that I've grown vocally and just trying to help build the team up and build myself up so I'm just trying to do anything I can to help this team. How about in a concussion situation like this you're so close to reminding your brother did you have to sort of involve the family's decision on that go? Yeah definitely they came down with me so when I was I had like when the team was here doing meetings I was driving up to a Pittsburgh meeting with the concussion specialist and everything and they were with me and just easing their mind that that's the biggest thing easing their mind they're all they're worried and everything but they'll be okay. We saw the play with Elijah Mothers, your head is growing. Say it again. We saw the play at practice. Yeah. Did you think you'd be out for two weeks after that? I mean I was good pretty it was that day that I was kind of had a headache and everything but I was pretty much good after that but it was just about going through the protocol and I mean there was no rush back we weren't playing regular season games so I mean I was just
really getting the time to heal it wasn't any rush. You both are already in the cap and still had a helmet to helmet just from your perspective to being expert but are those doing what they're intended to do? You know you gotta say you can wear it when he got to you know I'm saying like you guys are still getting concussions and getting where it is definitely still a physical sport so I mean concussion and I happen to be a regardless I know if you were in a guardian cap or not. I think it could be looked at too I know and just talked about it on the guardian cap I don't think in the back that is much padding is I would like but I feel it could be looked at but I think you get a concussion whether you were in a guardian cap or not so I mean stuff happens this is a physical game. Sorry would you just to clarify this you said you're gonna get any in helmets? You also wear the guardian caps during the games? No I'm not good no. You feel good about this game helmet that you've been playing? Yeah. Was it a name in the brand of helmet like any details you have?
I'm not sure the brand of name yet I have the get it from those guys inside but you guys would definitely be seeing us on the I haven't got it just yet. How do you feel about not playing in a pretty good game? You have to say you're career where it's going to be good? I want to say it's not a big deal but I don't feel any pressure any like I just needed to play in a pretty season game. I feel that's a great opportunity for the younger guys to get out there and showcase what they're able to do. Well I still been practicing and playing and working out and getting ready for the season so I mean I know the game I'm looking forward to that first game and I'm not really concerned about not being able to get a snap in the preseason. I think about MJ did feel in it particularly during the joint practice. Yeah MJ is the number one corner I mean you you guys see it he's gonna be big for us this year and I think that's what's special about this team we got three number one corners myself MJ and Greg I feel we all number ones and we able to do different things out there on the field and the one guy's out another guy can step in and not lose track or not lose pace on what we got going on.
Yeah definitely like you said bring it in that's exactly bring in energy bringing guys along MJ's real vocal out there and he competes as he's in competitor out there and just working hard trying to be the best he got the mindset of wanting to be the best and he is so we just go out there and compete with one another. We're happy to see CD Lam get his contract signed and be ready to go out there and play this game so you can face the bad guy. No I'm definitely happy for him that's life changing contract and everything for him and his family so definitely happy for him and looking forward to going to having that match up in the game always love going against the number one guys and best guys on that team so I'll be looking forward to it. It tends to wake up more to history because concussions that we're talking about. I think when suffer the latest one people who cover the team and then fans are wondering how loud and the discussion you know could you contemplate and retire and then every go through your mind or do you immediately know that you're going to come back. Yeah like I said this is a game I love
man I love playing this game being with the guys all here I really don't see myself doing too much other stuff so unless I'm just really physically unable to play this game I don't see myself stepping away from football no time soon so and like I said before I can't take it easy on these receivers out here so me being out here I got to give them a good look and just go out there and play but I answer your question now I haven't seen myself walking away though. Are you actually out of protocol now? Yes. Yeah. Hey did you know great cold miles hard in this teal of drafts. What have you seen? Say what? Say it again. It's a great cold miles hard in this teal of drafts. When have you seen from him or the camp and what kind of excise about him? Yeah Miles he's been balling he's been showing out making plays against the Vikings and just making plays out here so it was big for him to make the team I was happy for him we all congratulated him and he's going to be a big piece on our team like coming going forward. I'll put another rookie you mentioned making the receivers better where do you see how have you made Jamari talked about how you you've helped him you know as a rookie what
what have you seen out of him in his development? Yeah he's been looking good since he came in I think he's been getting better and better he's night and day from once he came in so where he's at now I believe I think that's just his competitive nature and what he's been doing out there in practice and us going against one another out there so he's been good and he's going to be a big piece as well it's our offense. So what do you give receivers how can you help a receiver? Yeah I mean it's a constant communication like if I were to win on a red they may come and ask me what it is that you've seen on that play that you're able to get in position and I'll tell them that I may ask them a question so it's just that constant communication on how we can get each other better. You shaded thank you guys thank you thank you thank you glad to see you guys. I just with guys going in going out you moving back to guard go coming in what was that like in the
moment having to adjust on the fly I mean we're built for this like just how you know I moved the center and Steve moved the left guard it's just we're all pretty much interchangeable and you're going to all play all positions across the board and you know when it comes down to that that time you know things like that got to happen and we're ready for it. Given all of the circumstances for him coming off the ground. Yeah I mean all those guys are ready you know we we prepare during the week during during training camp for situations like this so it's not nothing new to them you know guys are calm cool collected they have good composure so being elevated being active being a starter you know we're all in the same both ready to play. I know it's a next man mentality but in real time when that was happening the guys were going down and switching what was the challenge for both physically and mindset. I mean we're like I said we're all pretty much interchangeable you know like if I need to go to left guard center whatever bone needs to go center look or whoever you know it's it's not really like a big shocker moment you
know it's we we train for this we're prepared for this so when it happens you know we're able to execute to left guard I think half time. Oh coming in as a rookie in the crowd in the noise and I know you said you guys all trained for this but what can you tell us about how yeah I mean he's a man you know he's he's he's he's built for this moment he's done it for his whole life so you know at the end of the day it's just a game and we keep him we care try to keep everybody calm and collect it and you know we're five is one we help each other out and whenever you know you need to we do it so he was ready he was built for it you know he's gonna be a great player you're obviously no stranger to Matthew's toughness what was it like just seeing the way he let this off I think that guy's a warrior 36 years old he's taking some hits and some things and some dent so and he's able to get back up and keep it rolling you know he's still got that fire to him and you know we love having them back there. Sean has always said after a loss don't let a team beat
you twice but to have the lead late in the game it's all the injuries and not win to describe that level of frustration I mean it's the NFL comes down to seconds and inches and you've seen them off the past couple days and today you know it comes down to the the little things and you know we'll see them again. And I apologize if you were asked but what was I like for you personally to walk on to the other areas. It was kind of surreal man it was nice we were emotional seeing everybody you know I wasn't a kid when I came here but you know I grew into more of a man and these people here have definitely helped lay that blueprint for me and helped me out big time you know I can't thank them enough for that. I know you're looking to film yet for how you feeling about the D. I feel really good you know saying because because everything fair for all summer at OTA it's showing up you know we said our ground we came with um short came up short a little bit but you know it's a lot of antero I see a bright future for us. I think that they don't know overtime drive I mean you guys have been
stopping them and then they just seem to kind of get it rolling. Yeah you know um you know just something that we just need work on you know gotta play around better on that and just kind of eliminate the big bass that that's all that it comes down to but overall I just felt like we just just came a show on that. That's the offense it's kind of struggling to find it's footing early in the game what did you guys feel like you like to do as a D. I. S. D. you and I. Feel like we just need to step up you know I know they would have come through and have our back so I just telling the office you know we got y'all back you know just keep going y'all doing we're gonna keep on trying to hold in the best we can. So out of the visit go. Oh it was great yeah not I loved it but what's the staff here um you can tell it has really good uh family times strong connection. What were some things that you were looking for on your visit when there's you know talking to coach Norval skiing I guess what was important to you on this visit? So I mean for me I mean like this was kind of like a big decision for me where I'm decided to kind of like not fish my degree arrest and then from the court of the cycle
you know to find the place where I can develop the most and then just have to go to a line coach in a final place where I can face a good competition not only in games but also in practice as well and part of the most important is just swan and a group of guys that are dedicated to winning dedicated to being great because I mean we have a team of me guys who aren't serious about what to be great um just waste some time of money so I mean until the problem I'm a big dream with the culture being kind of important to me being being around coach of hand-to-day y'all what was kind of the things that you noticed around him just whether it's how he is or just how what your thoughts of him being around him most of the world. He's an incredibly detailed guy and yeah I got that for sure for him. It's like watching him film when he broke down it's like some game fun with me and he also kind of broke down some of the guys that he's coaching the past that are similar to me and you know that was uh he really just showed how I'll get over coach he is you know getting no question about going this experience when has that
happened. It was good he's a he's a very passionate guy and I mean I love that like a head coach should have that and now you can tell how much he cares about you know what the guys want the program about just like being dedicated being driven so it's a win to succeed. What did they tell you about the opportunity here as far as meeting a player you're a sore out of position. Well I mean they see me at left-hack when I'll be a good fit coming in. I was a coach no ball and stress also another great off-road sublime in the portal that have a philosophy of saying that it's a little bit of a lie. I'll be a good fit when it comes to what you guys do but if he does it's like the people here. What's kind of the ultimate feeling now about FSU? Have you solved this big experience with them? What's kind of the feeling about them? Yeah it's it's definitely good feeling. It's great. I don't know what I was actually able to come down here to some calls and focus on nice but you know in person it's a lot different. It's the
gate to know the staff here, the gate to know coach herb, it's a no question of what all he was doing. It's a great experience so for all. Who else have we checked out during this process? What are the schools? Oh I've talked to some others so I've talked to a house in Iowa and and I'm really just yeah that's what I've been and I've tried to keep the short-cali and I've tried to keep the sweet probably needs to be 20 bucks a schools. I mean that's not the main priority. Are you entering decision mode now or do you intend to take some trips in urban January? Yeah I'm done with this one. When do you want to decide? Sometimes for Christmas. What all? For those of us who have seen the mid-lit highlights of the woodcutter cutting your strengths and areas that you're looking to improve on. So shrink wise I would say probably just move it. I'm 12 or go short. I was very well for it. I'm a 45 pound guy. I quite this evident off film. I've been able to got my stances a big thing for me so big
and just be able to lift people. But at the same time also does the neat assistant and hand placing a bunch forward in general to the second week. If you're a big strong guy you can only do so much. That's a big reason why I want to have a good old one. I'm so happy to find that I need to be precise with everything. That's kind of why you're welcome for a three minute food. Thanks. A lot of low-hours defense because they always travel. But are we a pro Texas crowd for the most part? Do you guys kind of thrive off that? Do you like that kind of being the enemy? I guess? You can say that but we don't really try to focus on the fans. We just want to produce on the field. If it's a way game home game we just want to go out there and execute. Right. Cameron T. Grovins in the athletic. There's a lot to say when you guys all came back for some of the other steeped-to-line could be these last two games. We have 12 stacks. I mean you guys
really aren't blitzing a ton. There's not even a star. The bench guys can be out of the hands coming in. What's it been like to see this realize it's potential with the kind of we have last two weeks? I say we always knew what we had in our room. Now it's just showing up. Teams are scheming us different ways and it's allowing certain players and making certain plays. And I think we got so many guys in the room. We have two that can be ones anywhere. We have three that can be ones anywhere in the country but they all decided to stick here and grind this thing out with the guys they came in with. I think we have a great group who can make plays anytime. When you guys get 8 stacks in a game but also a whole lot of it's a minus 24 rush yards in a game. What is that like? What does that say about the job you guys did? I think it's a great feeling looking up at the scoreboard and seeing a negative. Definitely. But it's just like all the work we put in over the summer over the season.
We've been building this defense to where it is now. And like I said, when we're executing and we're at a high level it's hard to do anything with us. Behind the Jeremy Birmingham, the bot cat. I'm not going to ask you to call out officials. But I do want to ask you this. Yeah, I think our whole deline gets held every game. I don't know what the reps are seeing or what's going on with that. But you turn on the tape and really look at it. We're held almost every play. So. Is there something that you can you guys be better actors? What do you need to have to happen for it to get called in your favor one time this season? We can be actors but you know we don't really teach nothing like that. But I don't know if it's real because we're a high level. I don't know if it's real or real. Stay like letting things go or what it is but it's been pretty bad. I know y'all see it too. It's every play almost every game.
Adam, think WDNF. We have a chance to see a glimpse of Coach Day's pretty game speech. The intensity that you've seen for the last two games in the playoffs. Is that different than you've seen throughout the year? And what does that do for this group before you go out on the field? I want to say it's different. He's been like that his whole year but it's just now getting recorded and posted. But definitely when you see your head coach it's fired up like that. It likes the fire and you go out there and do better. And you know you can't thank Coach Day enough because he's our leader of this team and he's like that. He makes you want to go out there and do great for him for the guys around us. Scotty, we're going to go to you with a couple on Zoom. Yes sir, we're going to start with Andy Anders. Andy, go ahead. Yeah, Ali, Texas has a, runs a lot of outside zone schemes that you're just watching. What's important for the thing? Those kinds of plays on the ground and I guess just striking out those kinds of so to speak. Do you say that again?
Yeah. I've done view to get there. Yeah, Texas runs a lot of outside zone in their run game, running schemes. Just what's important for defending that kind of plays? For a detackle versus stretch team, you always want to talk about penetration, like penetrating the line and not catching because once you penetrate the stretch, it basically stops the stretch and makes them come back to unblocked players. So really just attacking this game and not catching. Next question is going to come from Dan Hope. Dan, go ahead. Hi, Leake, you were in a freshman class with Quinn. Now you're playing against him a few years later. Just what's that like for you? You know, Quinn's my guy. He's a great competitor, great quarterback. I think it'll be fun going against him trying to get him running around. Next question comes from Kurt Bulls. Kurt, go ahead.
Yeah, tell me, I don't know if there's one thing you can pinpoint why y'all've been so dominant. I would think maybe it comes back under the physical brand of football. Do you feel that's going to be the survivor in this game? Who's the more physical team? I'll say definitely the most violent team, you know, the team that plays the fastest, excuse the most, and you know, exceeds their game playing the most is going to win this game. I found a question will come from Stefan from Cleveland.com. Ty Lee, what's kind of your relationship been like with Ty Hamilton, especially as the seasons progressed and just how in sync do you feel like you two are playing on a defensive line together? Me and Ty are, you know, we've been roommates for the past two years. We live in the same apartment complex. We played a game together. It's really like one of my best friends on the team. You know, we talk about a lot of football things, so we're really on the same page with a lot of,
you know, plays, teams like to run against us. You know, it could be some stunts we've run. We're always, you know, connected in some kind of way. Jerry, back to you. Great, thanks. We've got time. Just a couple more questions. Joey, come up and Columbus, this bad. Ty Lee, what does it say about your defensive line and how pride for you guys when you can get eight sacks, 13 tackles for a loss, though, having to bring a ton of extra guys and pressure by using this forward and do a lot of that? I'll say a cool to store our coach, Coach Jay. This is a lot of technique and, you know, sometimes it doesn't show up because, you know, teams scheme you different ways, but when you have a team one dimensional, like they have to pass the ball. That's when all the, you know, the pass rush technique and stuff comes out. And I think we've gotten Tennessee and Oregon to those situations where they had to pass the ball and, you know, just let us rush free instead of worrying about the run. Does that make sense? You guys just, what do you know, one of those pass rushing situations to I.U.S.T. at somebody's sacks and TFLs? Yeah, I'll say we're definitely winning way more 101s now.
And, you know, they're not keeping as many guys in the box to block us because they have to, you know, they're trying to come back. So I think it's like I said, it's just cool to sort of offense, you know, creating these big leads and making teams one dimensional. Before we left, David DeGouz, M-W-C-M-A. Tyler, we've talked about how better the team has gotten to getting off the fast starts on both sides of the ball. But there has been some scoring late in the first half. Like I said, seeing the against Oregon, has there been renewed emphasis on controlling the middle eight and how important will that be against Texas? Definitely, you know, that's one of Coach Day's biggest points, you know, controlling the middle eight, you control the middle eight, you like chances are you winning that game goes, you know, skyrockets. So definitely versus Tennessee, Oregon we give up touchdowns, you know, late in the second half. I mean, first half. But, you know, we just got to keep our full on the gas. We can't let up, like, at all. Because these teams we're playing are great teams like Texas is a great team, you know, great offense, great offense, a line, great quarterback, great receivers, great running backs.
So, you know, we just got to just keep executing like we know we can and you know, see how it plays out. Okay, final question for Tyler here. Tim May, Letterman Rowe. Tell me, you know, Aaron Donnelly, you used to talk about everybody's hurting at this time of the year. But when the lights come on and the snap goes, what goes off in a guy like here's mine? I mean, from the standpoint of making the play. I mean, can you explain that? That people don't get to play then in the middle of it all. I'll say, you know, like I said, you're right. Everybody has hurt around this time. You know, we're with 15th week, 14th, you know, deep in the season. You know, you just got to, you just got to show up. That's my mindset. You just got to show up. No matter what I'm going through, I got to make that play. I got to be disruptive, you know, just to help my team out. Because, when I'm on, when I'm on my A game, you know, everybody else can, you know, feed off of me or we can feed off of like, you know, JT Jack tie. But I said, you know, Coach, make always says like, nobody cares. Like it's true. Nobody really cares if you're a hurry if you're injured. You just got to go out there and play and make plays.
Just a little bit. Explain the drive you have personally to get to through this next one into the next one. But I know it's one step at a time, but you know, he came back, etc. Explain people what's going on in your brain about your motivation. My motivation, you know, we all have our wise, you know, while we're doing things, you know, we have family, you know, family here, our team, our brotherhood. But he's got to, he want to do, you write for your brothers, you know, on this team, you know, we're trying to win the big thing. We're not just, you know, trying to go win two games and lose. We're trying to win the big thing, you know, as long as we stay motivated, stay, you know, humble, like, you know, take the rap poison, you know, things like that and just execute and just play our hardest, you know, we'll, they will be fine. Thank you very much. Yes. So that's the house of Spring, the big old Max who had been healthy? Yes, sir, I feel very healthy. Obviously coming off a seasoning and ending injury last year.
I'm feeling really good, feeling better than ever, to be honest, even better than I did before the season last year. So it's been a great spring so far. How does the point of being here, your office at the great start last year? Yeah, I mean, it was, it was a hard time. I mean, it's definitely not easy going through any injury, especially during the season like that. But, you know, it builds character. I think it's good for me in the long term. I also built that for the time of the season. Oh, for sure. Yeah, saw some key pieces coming there and produced at a high level. What do you think, George? George is a stud. Once he gets healthy, he's going to be great. He's working really hard right now and he's going to, he's going to have a great season this year. Personally, how exciting is it for you to be kind of your position now this year? Yeah, it's super exciting. You know, I got a lot better feel for the offense this year. Really good rapport with Hudson and it's been a fun spring so far. So just got to keep, keep carrying that on and see where it takes us. Obviously, when you're sideline, you're not playing how important is it to stay like mentally ready
and mentally get those reps so that when you come into the spring, you can improve. Definitely. I mean, that's all it is really just mentally envisioning the plays, envisioning, making the plays and every night, you know, I think about it probably every day. So it was, it was a big part of it for sure. For sure. How have you gotten better? I think just understanding the defenses and understanding where the quarterback once me at a specific time and you know, building that trust with him is huge and I think I've been doing a pretty good job of that. How does that relationship with you and Hudson developing the year too? Yeah, it's developing great. I mean, we have a great friendship off the field. So, you know, that helps a lot on the field as well. So we have a great connection, you know, both on and off the field and it only helps. Your brother's coming, right? Yeah, yeah. So you'll be here in May. It'll be a lot of fun. It'll be a lot of fun having him up here. What do you mean to see a lot of this team on the Saturday? I think just, you know, go out there and play hard, limit the mistakes and at the end of the day,
it's just being consistent with what we do and playing hard. So that's why I want to see it for sure. Would you like everyone to prepare for this spring game? Oh, for sure. I think we're way ahead of last year and I'm excited to see where it takes us. Anything on Dipper or the freshman? Yeah, Drew Bipper. Yeah, he's getting healthy now. He's looking great. He looked really healthy today and I'm super excited to play with him. He's a lot of fun to play with. Just how quick is this turnaround? Do you guys just started practicing a couple of weeks ago? Now you have a spring game to get to? It's pretty quick, but you know, I like it. I like it a lot. So it's fun to get out there and play, you know, 11-V-11, put the ball down and go. I mean, that's the goal. That's the goal every day. You know, that's what I'm reaching for. And whether I get it or not, who knows, but that's what I'm reaching for every day. There'd be a leader like how he is. I mean, he's just unbelievable leader and we all lean on him. He runs this whole team and he knows that. We'll go as far as he goes.
Jeremy Birmingham, the podcast. We talked a little bit last week just kind of you being the becoming one of the emotional leaders of the team. As you've ever walking off the field at halftime upon Wednesday, I have to be down there by the locker room. I was the only person to take photos of you guys down there. It's weird. But everyone looks super fast. You were up 34 and 8. And it looked like you got to down by 26 points. Did you feel something different about the focus at that point of his team or is it just a bit of modernism of what's going on right now because it seemed different? I just think the job wasn't done. We were here nothing to be excited about at the moment. You know, we were excited there in a game where we're making a plays, but at that time, at halftime you go back to 0-0. You just scored. They scored a thin and a half. We knew they got the ball back. The defense wasn't quite happy that they gave that touchdown to end. We knew they get the ball back coming out, but we was excited because we knew the job wasn't doing it.
Bill Rebellion, Columbus, this way. You were a five-star guy and that coming up. All these guys in the room almost were five-star guys. And then there's Jeremiah. Is he like, does he like all you guys in the room? I mean, I'm not sure. It's probably something you got to ask him, but you know, Jeremiah has played with a lot of great guys throughout his career. He's seen all the talent you can see in the world, but I don't know if he's ever in all, but I mean... Oh, oh yeah. I mean, I'm not surprised at anything he does now. Like, I've seen him just out. We were nine years old. So anything he does, anyone hand-kidged, I've seen... I'm not surprised at anything he does. When he was nine, do you know this is something special we've met? Oh, yeah. I mean, coaches were coming up to us complaining that we weren't nine years old. Like, can we get their IDs and stuff like that? So, I mean, I mean, there's definitely some footage that we got to go find, but the plays we used
to make when we were younger and just to see where he is now is amazing. It seems very unaffected by all the starter. How does that happen? I think how he was raised. He's very level-headed. He knows his goals and what he wants to get done in life. And this is just one step of the way for him. Can I throw a back to Texas for a couple of questions on Zoom, Scotty? Yes, sir. We're going to start with Defon from Cleaning.com. Go ahead. Brandon, I want to go back to what you were talking about with Coach Day earlier. You know, whenever he talks about this team success, he says all the credit goes through players. It seems like the players think that he deserves some of the credit. How big, how influential has he been during the turnaround you guys have had these last few weeks? He's been huge, man. Coming here after that team of North-Wars, you know, heartbreaking, of course. But we came in here. We had a leadership meeting and he was in here. And then we had a team meeting after that. Hearing the stuff he had to say and we had to say,
going back and forth, we just, we knew we would have his back no matter what. I mean, there's a lot of stuff said about him and his family and stuff like that. But hey, here we're brotherhood and we're family and we just, we go stand by him no matter what. Our next question is going to come from Dan. Hope Dan go ahead. Brandon, I mean, I'm sure you came in here to Ohio State thinking you'd probably be starting here in your second year, but it seems like you really embraced the growth process. Just what's kind of that process been like for you of kind of embracing your role this season and continuing to develop? Yeah. In life, things doesn't go the way you exactly planted too. And that's just to happen. You know, things happened to Mecca last year that allowed him to come back and that allowed me to learn more. And that's just how I see it makes me a better football player for the future. So yeah, I mean, yeah, let's see it. Three more on Zoom. Next one's going to come from
Stefan Means. Go ahead. Steven, but yeah, you're good. Brandon, there are a lot of clips of you this year where you're super, super excited after a block and kind of showing your emotion there. What about blocking do you love so much as a receiver? Just being able to hit another guy with all my power. It's hard as I can without any consequences. Except if you hold of course, but yeah, just bringing that power. I mean, I heard some of the defensive guys telling me yesterday, they were like, bro, I hate to go against you. So knowing that from the defensive guys, so I know what the other defensive guys are thinking like, just keep bringing it to them. They not going to like it for four quarters. That's my mindset. Next question is going to come from Danny Davis. Danny, go ahead. Brandon, what are your impressions of these Texas defensive backs and this
kind of we've seen from them on film, so far? Yeah, the last couple of days we watched them. They're fast team. They don't give up many big plays down field. They're aggressive, but I actually know some of the DBs they have at corner there. I play with them. Well, I played with Malik Muhammad at SFE, so I might know him a little bit. But watching them, they're fast team, they're physical, they're disciplined, but we just got to get the job done. Give any Malik stories or any what you say. Give any Malik stories or anything you remember about playing with them. Oh, yeah, but I'm not going to say them here. Yeah, we'll just keep that. Our final question is going to come from Kurt Bulls. Kurt, go ahead. Hey, Brandon. One of the issues Texas has had the second half of the year is finishing.
What if you can speak to, and they had a trouble, obviously, in the peach bowl, you know, blew a 16-point lead. Can you talk about finishing and having a killer instinct? And you guys obviously seem to have that now. Yeah, I think that started in off-season training at Fall Camp. We always say go plus two. If you're doing a 10-yard pro-shadow, you have to go plus two throughout the line, and that's just finishing up as well. And then fall camp, we had these long two-and-a-half hour practices or whatnot. And then we came out and we had to do these finishers. We called them Asperg Games late in the year like this. And we, I think Coach Day did a great job preparing all of us for these moments. And yeah, we're ready to go. We have time for just a couple more questions in Columbus so we can wrap up with our other two guys. Bill Landis, Kings of the North. Brandon, Shrewey on the second touchdown run. It seemed like you took two players out of the play, first with your release, and then with the
guy you actually blocked. Is that how it's designed? Or was it just lucky that the guy decided to take off his side of the release? It's actually designed for me to block the safety and lead the corner 101 with the running back. But I was surprised at the corner. I see came in so far in my release. I think he thought it was a pass. But I think he was the edge of the defense. If you go watch that play, but I don't know, I don't really know why he came in so far, but it helped out for us. And I made my block into a real score. Is there any lesson there for like a young receiver watching that? That even if you know him to play, you're not getting the ball. You're intended to block, but you your release has to be at all point like as if you're going to go pitch pass. Yeah, definitely. Every little detail matters and then type of plays. We were in a red zone there. So we say every hour matters is two yards. So the block I made is just a testament to Kyle. Coach Hartline print me throughout the week to make that block. And final question. Joey confidence,
Columbus, this batch. Brandon Will and this has been some of the ball to equal lately. And some of the special way you guys have opened games, what do you think is this quick for you guys and for him and watching those plays? A lot more confidence. I say throughout the year, we were always there as offense. We had we didn't know we didn't quite know our identity. And now slowly but surely I think we found that and we're going to keep on rolling. And he's made some great throws and yeah. I'm sorry, Brandon, I do have one more. Steve, how are you doing? We're playing worse out in sport. Brandon, there have been opportunities for you to play a huge role on offense and you know the number of plays you play in game can differ from one week to the next. But the opportunity is coming sooner rather than later for you to be in every down player. Just what are the things you need to do in your game to take it from where it is now to be in every down guy? I think there's a lot of things I could work on in my game. I would say continuing to be football smart
by IQ, just knowing what the defense is going to do before they do it. My routes always can get better. My hands always can get better staying in the jugging machine. Work ethic, keep on top of it. Don't get satisfied with anything I do and don't get too big, don't get too low, don't get too high, don't get too low is what they say. You feel like a guy that the people follow it seems like just in your mind, even the second you're guy that you're kind of working toward being kind of a leadership type guy. I got to have guys that will take that role. Yeah, it's a great feeling, of course. No guys are watching what you do and listening to what you do. But I just feel like we do that with a lot of players here and not just myself, but the leadership we have on this team is like no other and that's why we got so far I think.
I mean, it doesn't think you have to really say. I mean, I guess you just got to learn everything slowly of course is a lot to learn, but I got a lot of hope. You guys had a very unique experience with the early and role leaves. You got a chance to go to, you know, semi-final. Some of you went to the Rose Bowl, there's nothing caught in the national championship game. What was that like? How much did you think that helped you? That was incredible. You just see how all the leaders led in that position and just seeing what they did and how they prepared. That's gonna help a lot with everybody. What was the highlight of that time? Other than winning the national championship yourself? Was there something that stands out to you? Oh, just being able to travel and get to meet everybody, meet all the players, everybody I won an ad and meet all early and role leaves that early. I was really just living on my own, you got to be independent. That's pretty much it, though.
I mean, of course there's adjustment, but I'm getting the justice period. Yes, your money is 100%. I mean, of course it's hard to miss my senior year, last year kind of with some of my best friends. What did you do to you? I think you did my stand right. It was an interview really, dude. Sorry, listen, I'm sorry, but how did you get your... Really, it was just I was a baby, my dad, so I called him my dad and my master's partner. You really? I was like, I always called. Like, once I was born, it was forever. Why did you mind if they picked that? My dad looked up to me and I'm a junior, so I play for your game. Here, I think you should be your first name in the heart, right? Yeah. Okay, so you could wear eight, too.
You know, I'm not sure if you're a third or four, yeah. Yeah, I mean, you got two choices. It's a desire to be addicted to awkward people. You know, I think I fell into that and I know a younger age, but super cool, that's not who I am. Did you say it again? How did you say it again? I watched the last episode of Land Band on the planet, download it, it's a pretty show. What did you think of it? A little hard, but I don't know that. This wife seems a little like forward, but I don't know how he handles it. It's a good show, bro. I think it would be over a six to be coming on the camera, but it's been all right, so I'm excited to see how it goes. Where did you learn to cheer? I don't know, I thought you did a good job. I was surprised, honestly, it seemed like you knew what you was doing.
So, the important question, you say you hit your mom in the salary, if you guess, you win it all. If mom will get a pay raise or... I don't know what to talk about that. Is there a meeting or something? The good thing? I'll figure it out. Everybody seems to have a good read of terms. People are interested in the read of terms. They don't have a good read of terms. They don't have a good read of terms. They don't have a good read of terms. They don't have a good read of terms. They don't have a good read of terms. I was kind of out there, didn't you? There's none of the people that I was trying to find out about you. Yeah, well, let me first off, I think I'd be doing it this service to my team. We even think about what's next. This is an overhaul. That's another thing I got to tell me. So much, Peru is just being present in every single moment that I'm in. Not looking too far ahead because I'm tripping on what's right in front of me. So, again, that's too self-insufficient of thank you for meeting me.
I think about what's next to me. You're at least aware of the good of the law, speculation out there that people are going to throw a huge number into doing a poor law this season. I mean, right now I'm just not worried about all that stuff. People can say all they want to say, but I'm just focused on focused on Friday night. Nervous? I mean, I still get nervous for sure, but I just don't think. I think I do have to help just understand that at that moment, whatever moment it is that I'm nervous about, it doesn't define who I am as a person, and it doesn't define who I am and God's eyes. Understanding and knowing that has just kind of put this force field of peace around me that I think it allows me to be able to be calm in certain situations, but it doesn't, that's not good.
I mean, I just love the game so much, and if you don't get nervous or a little bit of work, because I don't think you have that same love. I mean, I've got butterflies since, you know, going into football games since I was, you know, five, six years old, so I don't know if that's all that. I'm just going to do it. I didn't, I don't know, just, you know, football just doesn't mean as much as it did to me back then. I want it to always mean that much. I've been told. I really plan as much, so I just wanted to get like more experience under my belt, so I can, you know, bring younger guys with me because I've been through a lot of. One of those younger guys, we're seeing it out there, it's the first time it's hurt all of you guys. What have you seen from Lill? Because I kind of felt like, I shouldn't have real forgot about it, because he was hurt, now he's runnin', you know, almost a second man off the high, you and Ty.
What have you seen from Lill? Well, it was a workhorse. He, he going to stay quiet, he going to work hard, and that's what I love about him. He focuses, he don't really talk much. He's just going to get the job done, do a job right, rarely has any mistakes. What would be a successful season? A national championship? A ring? When all the games we don't want to lose anything, we got a mindset that we can't be beat, and we just got to go show it. That mindset different. It seems like you guys expect a national championship every year, this year even more so, you guys have all come back for this, you guys have all decided like an opposite lot, because that is, you can feel the difference, or is there not really any difference, it's just the same work. It's definitely a difference, everyone working harder, we noticed our last run, and most of us don't have any years after this, so we got to go, go bigger, go home, then we're not trying to go home. Finish big. We know what you guys think of Michigan, but when you look at what they did, they won the national championship, and you guys took them down to the final minute,
right? You know what I mean? I mean, you were right there, something goes a little different, you guys could have won that game against them. Does that tell you anything about like that, hey, you guys want to win a national championship, but you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the national championship last year, like you're that close? So I'm saying, we just like work harder, that's kind of a coach that makes a saying, nobody cares, just work harder. Like those, you know, when we played Georgia, it's the same thing. Last play, you know, they went on the win in 90s, so we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season, I think we'll be fine. How frustrating is that? You're that close against the last two national titles? Uh, of course it's frustrating, but you can't change the outcome. You can't really dwell on it. You just got to come back and work harder, do things better than you did last year, and hopefully the outcome will change. Is that as you get older, you kind of learn, and I thought that was working hard, and then you always find out there's a little more than you could have been doing? Yeah, definitely. I mean, that's how that's what growing up is basically in college.
I thought, freshman year, I was working, it's hard as I could, but now I look back at it. I really wasn't working hard at all, compared to what I'm doing now, so just to learn anything. If the stamina is a 16, then they have to know, like, what do you need it to be to be your best? Uh, like is it 75? Is it 80? 80? 85? I mean, I can, it's all on me. I just, I think it's a little higher. I was just trying to be funny, but, I mean, it's all on me. I just got to run harder in shape. So, I just, it's time to add to you, young, it's been a pleasure. The idea of a potential is 15 or 17 or 17. Yeah, please. How do you, say about that idea that's making nervous about, can you last that long? Do you really need your work? What was your head like? I think, I think we, I definitely can last. I was just, you know, we got to get the young guys to come along with us. We can't play 50 snaps again. That's just too much on our bodies. Just everybody, like, online, online, we got to get those younger guys to play, you know, get that pieces on the D-line and online and everywhere else.
So we can last that long. Speaking of the top-class k-dome, let me snap a snap. Did you like playing that new snap again? Not sure if you love it. I don't know if any of us were really expected to play that next. Oh, yeah, I did. Unless we were like winning by like, a line. I thought, like, Darren knows mom is he not going to sit down or something. But we're playing them big games, like, you know, Notre Dame too, or North, those kind of games. Of course I want to be, because I know I can contribute. And I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I can get the job done. What stands out about Kaden McDonald? Because he got the kick. I'm going to get some of those second. Oh, yeah, definitely. K-Mac is a K-Mac animal. Y'all, you haven't really seen it yet, but in practice, he shows all the time. He's just, he's growing right now. He has to work, I think. He just has to get, you know, in the playbook, things like that. You guys are about the exact same size. Listen, you're both listening to 6-3, you're 3-27, he's 3-26. Yeah, he's very often. I kind of look at him like my junior, but, you know, K-Mac, he's going to be a great player. He's got to develop more and get into playbook. So really a lot on you, older guys.
There's that large group of young guys, and then there's the senior in the back. Is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys along as well? Yeah, definitely. We got to be leaders. Like I said, we got to have them play this year. We can't just play all the snaps. They got to get in there and get some work. And we got to get them right, during the all season. So they can play. And not just play, they want to like contribute, like make plays, tackle, sex. It's a state that we're about to spread. It seems like these guys get bigs. Each one of the freshmen class is a bit bigger up there. Do those guys kind of, it doesn't kind of why you and yourself, the first? Yeah, they definitely some big dudes. And they all work hard. I've only seen much of some of the day too, when I'm passing on. Throughout the workouts, they've been working hard. They're determined to have to say that. And it looks like they're ready to work together. How important is this? It feels like there's a lot of great defenses. That you have big athletic defense tactics that you can eat up space. But also, you know, right? That is that.
Does that have an environment maybe for great defense? To have guys like you that have some fault, but also have great feet? I think that is definitely, I think if you look at the last couple of national championship winners, like see my North, they didn't know they got two bit detacled, two athletic detacles. Look at Georgia, two athletic detacles. I think that's definitely need if you want to go on that big run and beat those big teams. If you think about this, they won't defied by the defense tactics actors. What's Georgia? Jordan Davis and Gail Carter. What's Michigan? It's Chris Jenkins. Couple of more questions. You might as well have how, I mean, you understand it because you play it, but I feel like some time I don't know, are people realizing how important defense tackles are a little bit more than they used to? I think so. I think they're starting to develop more and more of these like freakiest detacles. Yeah. Like in the combine, just now, you see in like those guys, they're moving four to seven eights and things like that. So we'll see. And when you think about those freakish
attacks, how do you think you fit into that mold of that kind of player? You watch that and say, yeah, that's me. Yeah, definitely. I think I'm top notch when it comes to detacles, but I don't want to, you know, get a big head, but you know, I watch it come on. I watch it do the drills. I have tape here. You're like, you're looking like my film. So I think I'm up there with all those times. Tyler, can you become like an artist and it comes into the bad end of passes? I think your legs can be thanks. When you're going, it's great practice. You're not doing it much a lot. I don't remember how many of you had last year, but you have a goal in mind. How many of you want to have? I mean, as many as I can have, I think I have more than that, but I think they're counting. I think they're counting some of them. And it's some of them where I like just missed it. So, but I think we work on drills matching the hand. I think that's, uh, goes big. And uh, what we do is a D line, you know, just affecting the quarterback is anyway you can. It's just great for the defense, you know, just that little thing covering this thing that's going to be good. And I think that's what I'm going to do. I'm going to do it. So, just that little thing covering his eye,
you know, he might throw it a little bit to the left to our players. So, so it's something that you really, really have to work on. You can do that with what you do. It's steering that's one of the things that you've maybe worked on the most. You can do it in your time here because there are a few guys that I've seen, like, oh, that passed me down. It takes a little bit. We don't have that. It's a strategy. We're kind of kind of expected for the people. I think I just have like a, like, a eye for the ball kind of. I kind of just look at the quarterback and just, I see him like load up. He's just trying to get in his ways. And sometimes he just throws it to me. I don't know. I'm here at T. If you like to be a high-stay quarterback, you can get it from your back down passes. I mean, they get frustrated by, you know, we're a team, you know, we're just getting better. I should lot of different backs, man. They just learn to grow for them. You got to pick your top three backs. You got to go right now. Hold on to your two. Uh, I don't really have a top three, but I'll give you, I'll give you one. I would say, say, Juan Gibbs and...
I like McCaffrey. Although he was injured this year, I like McCaffrey. I appreciate it. Who's the best back in this drive? Best back in this drive. I lead out of the yard. That's y'all, that's y'all decision. What do you all remember most about playing with Howard? Playing with Will Howard. What I'm going to remember most. Uh, where Howard, man, he's just such a great lead. Such a great leader, man. It's just like in moments where usually a lot of players say, fold, man, he was just always calm and relaxed, man. And he just the leader that he was, man. That's one thing I'm going to remember about him. What do you think James P. Yeah, he's, he's going to be really good, man. He's on Coach Lock. I think he got the transfer in as well from West Virginia. Just that one, two punch with them both as well. They're going to be really good backs. And so James P. was, man, he's smart the way that he goes about his business, man, he's mature. And so man, he's growing, you know, just as a person in as a player. And so man, yeah, definitely Ohio State, you know, that running back room is in great hands.
I'm looking at the U.S. body. I'm just having a race, personality, and a coach. I'll keep that up until they say my name. Yeah, Coach, Coach Hartline, man, he's full of energy, man. And he's creative as well, you know, I'm just learning from him as well. You know, I'm trying to run more outside the backfield. It was being able to learn from Coach Hartline. And so he's definitely creative at what he does. And he brings a lot of energy to the team as well. And so I think they'll do really good. So what's the way to play out for the right team? That's what the question is. Just intensity, man. And since he did other playoffs, every game, man, is like the intensity got, you know, higher and higher. And so, you know, being able, I know in the lead, it's the same thing, even if it's not the playoffs, just every game and intensity, it keeps getting higher and higher. And so, yeah, you just, I know you got to bring it, you know, each and every day and come in and work just like Ohio State. You know, I definitely feel like Ohio State. They definitely do a good job of preparing us for that. You know, I just remember even before going through this process, I'll talk to a lot of players before that.
And they told me a lot of just about how much Ohio State prepared them, you know, for the NFL. And so, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I know I took a couple of days off after the National Championship. And then, shoot, right after that, I'm writing sample Florida. And I'm right to it. And so, yeah, I think while I trained, I trained at YoMurf Performance. I think it's called the House of Athlete or the Compound now. They did a good job, man. They're just bringing us in and the way they went about training us, man. They did a really good job. The bucking nearest. No, I haven't. Temple, a Tampa nice. It's a nice city, man. Really nice. The 40 to broad and avert. Yeah.
Yeah. Nah, man. It's really all about technique. And then it's about mindset as well. And so, I say, you know, it's for the love of my brother. It's for the love of Will Howard. It's for the love of the receivers who I got on the perimeter. Just making sure, you know, first of all, my quarterback doesn't get sacked. And I told Will, I think it was before the first game. I was like, I got your brother. It's, I said, man, I'm not going to let you get hit, you know. And so, I don't know if I gave up a sack. I'm not sure that. But I know if I did, I haven't given up too many. And so, man, it's for the love of my brother's, though, man, making sure the ball get in their hands, you know, the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed. You had to hit the break just feel later today. What is something you've been working on right now? In my game. You can't really work on this, you know, in all season, I feel like. It's more so, you know, you got to put the pads on. You got to go through some inside run, you know, maybe. It's really just continuing to run through tackles. So, that's, I feel like that's one of the areas in my game.
You know, I want to continue to get better, right? I feel like I did a good job of that in my senior year. And so, I just want to continue to build on that. Yes, I did. Yes, I did. So, people, try to look like, how long do you want to run out there? Get back to nursing. I can barely do it. I did meet with New Orleans as well. I never got that comparison. Actually, I know I have a Camera. Sure, yeah, man, I have a Camera. Great, great back, man. I'm just what he does. And I was 101 matchups. He's dangerous, man. And he's so smooth. He's so smooth as well. I'm not going to lie. He's smooth. Yeah. Inside zone from stack. Being able to hit that thing downhill. And I'll say the next one is probably just an option out of the backfield. You know, and man, man coverage. He's getting on that line backer. And so. You know, he needs to be here a couple of years. Jeremiah. You have the current, of course, who's the best out of this.
He's the best out of this. He's the best out of this. He's the best out of this. He's the best out of this. He's the best out of this. Like I said, he's the best out of this. Yeah, I say the man, the biggest thing is the way that he carries himself, man. And the way that, man, he approaches the game. He comes in with the mindset, you know, he's going to work every single week. You know, every practice, you know, he's working hard. You know, even shooting. I don't know. I think he had a, every game was a good game for him, man. And so, but still, man, he always has the mentality to mindset that, you know, he's going to come in each and every day. He's going to continue to work and get better, man. And so he's definitely, man, he's going to be a special player, man. He really is. Man, a lot of ups and downs, man. It's just how you respond to adversity. And I feel like that's something that God has definitely helped me to do better. It's just, I'm not having something to lean on now. You know, I remember before I met him, you know, going through those adversity, I had nothing to run to. You know, you can run to people, but they still can't, it's not too much.
They can't truly help you. You know, I feel like, you know, I feel like the only person that can truly help you is your relationship with Jesus Christ. And so, being able to lean on him, you know, he gives you, in those moments where it's tough, you know, where it's low. And when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about, he gives you that peace and comfort, you know, even in those moments, man, where it's so hard that you can't explain. It's like, man, I'm going through this, but like, how am I still filled with this internal joy? You know, how do I have so much peace in this situation? And so, that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you. And so... Um... Man, those guys have such a great mentality, man. Am I just really love their mentality? Especially Q as well. You know, I talked about Will Howard, his leadership, but Quincham mentality, man.
That boy just, yeah, that boy just gifted, you know. You see, you know, sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like, you know, he should have a negative five yards. And then as soon as you know it, you know, he, that running through somebody, stiff arm, and somebody, and she would just gain a 10. And so... Shoot, I think... Yeah, man, I think it's just like... He's just gifted, man, too, beyond it. He's just gifted, you know, he's a big back, you know, he's strong, and so, you know, he's able to do those things. Yeah, man, it's definitely, you know, I look at his game, and I want to, you know, at the same time, I want to learn from Quincham. You know, I want to look at his game, and it's like, man, where can I get better at as well? You know, that's the type of player I am. I'm always looking to get better, man. I'm always looking to grow as a player. Julian Sand, oh yeah, he's going to be a great, but he's going to be a great quarterback, man. He's so, so accurate, and so, he's definitely, man, I know Coach Dez is definitely going to get him right. Just, you know, continuing to grow as a leader, continuing to grow as a player.
And so he's going to be really good for a high state. I know just the quarterback position. I feel like, you know, the quarterbacks in the past, they've definitely been vocal. And so I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to ask Julian Sand as well. It's to be that vocal leader, and lead the offense, and lead the team. Thanks, Julian. Shoot, man, he has a build like JK Dobbins, and I kind of see them, you know, similarities in their game as well. And I know JK Dobbins, he was a great running back. I feel like he's not talked about his none. A lot, but man, his career here, you watch his highlights is great. I remember before I recruit, before I committed here, I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights like every, every one of his years here, like four or five times. And so, man, he was such a great back. And I feel like, you know, when I see JK Dobbins, when I see James people, I see similarities to both of their games.
I feel like they play the same. So, I appreciate you all, you have to go. Thank you. Thank you.
Thank you.
Oh, I think I got a lot bigger. I'm like 240, you know, like 240, 4 right now. Last year, I played at like 236, 237. What does it feel like at 244, or belt? You feel like an almost a different machine out there? Yeah. What does it feel like to be running around out there like you are, but with more, more back? I just feel like I'm like, like, like more downhill, like stronger, like I'm taking all the bloods better. It's a big move. Is it daunting? Maybe that's not the correct term, but to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year. And you played quite a bit last year instead of what do you have to get straight in your head about being on the field that much more? Is it going to get ready to just play 30 more snaps? But, are you, are you, how would you describe how much you're looking forward to it from an 8-stand point? Yeah. I'm looking forward to it. I'm ready for it. The text is open. It's a rematch. But it's not really two different teams compared to one time you all played and stuff. How does that enhanced this camp for you and this team getting ready for the, where an opener of that magnitude?
Yeah, with an opener like that, we've been emphasizing it a lot. We know we got coming, so we know we got to do, we've been preparing for it. Already just probably with you. I think Riley ready to play right now. He advanced freshman, like he ended up here in the book. He studied in like he advanced and his measurements was crazy. Like he saw like the saw line too. Or, you said you're ready. You know you're ready. What was that process like during last season? Could you feel yourself becoming more and more ready for whatever the team needed from you? Yeah, because that's pretty much what my role was. Just whenever I was needed, I had to step up. So I feel like that's what built me into me being able to say I'm ready for this year. Is it more a physical thing? Is it a mental thing? When I say ready, I think it's pretty much like everything physically, mentally, emotionally. I think I'm there. A different is that feeling this year than last year? That's the most possible thing I've ever had. I asked the one more time. How different is that response to the old?
That's the reason that he's the most powerful. All that. He was last year. He knew you were a role player. I feel like it's a way bigger responsibility with me having to step up this year. But I kind of go about it the same way like last year. I was intentional with everything I did. I feel like this year it's going to be the same thing. It's probably a little bit more. Somebody you saw me read for me. And what word? How's everybody working? I'm a player. I say. Scrab my game. I say when you think of me, you would think of like a bully, like a silver bullet. I don't really a bully. I'm always on the ball. That's how I like to play and think. You know what I'm like? No, I ain't got to be my nickname, but. I'm saying that the nickname beat that. Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, it's like. I've got a couple more questions for Patricia's style and how it's free.
I mean, how does that fit you? And what are you enjoying about bullying and that kind of stuff? Oh, I think it fit me because. I don't know, I just like the defense. I feel like we got like you said, we got a lot of freedom and we moving around a lot. A lot of the terms is like, you know, I don't know. I don't really not answer that. That's okay. Does it? You can go on your instincts a little bit more, maybe. And it's not so thinking of too much. I don't even know if I say that because there's a lot of thinking going on, but it's like. I just like his defense. I like her Patricia's defense. I like what he got going on. That was sad when CJ left the ring. Now, I wanted to my sad. I was kind of like happy for him. Yeah. That's what you want. No. No. No, that's my dog. I'm going to say it. Kind of missing a little bit, but yeah, I'm happy for him. Well, don't thank you. Go ahead one last question. Coach Daze talked a lot about the guys who played some last year, but maybe weren't the starters. And the other one. Yeah. I'm happy for him. I'm happy for him. I've got a lot of the guys who played some last year, but maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for that wasn't maybe your national championship you guys will win your own.
How much do you feel that is a guy who certainly contributed last year, but will be in this bigger role and a lot of some of your classmates? Yeah, I do feel like, um, yeah, I do feel like I did win a national last year, but like you said, my role wasn't same as how it's going to be this year. So yeah, I definitely want to go get another one experienced that like feeling we need to be on the field a lot more place. Great. Oh, well, thank you very much. I'm sure you've been using you, you know, and that almost saved you whole stuff. How much is it grown that you can put your finger on? Yeah, I was growing immensely. I mean, KLOP makes a lot of checks. Latham makes a lot of checks. I listen to them. Whatever they need. If I need to cover somebody, I'll go cover anybody. If they need me to do run support, I'll do run support. And it's really what KLOP does, what we do and Latham. It just goes back to the coach G's preparation and everyone's preparation to give us more flexibility. And it doesn't matter who's in those positions. And we can all play every position whether it's covering somebody or running and tackling.
Did you feel like that was the case before the Oregon game? You're saying what I'm saying? Is that something that's been added? It just, you know, rely on a little bit more. Go ahead. I did. I've probably been a Brasca game, Megan and more safety reps. And we had a five week to prepare. So I really learned to play but a lot more. Even though I knew to play but I learned a lot more. Mounting like in debt. You know, so really just after the Oregon game, it helped me a lot to go back to safety. Go to NICU everywhere. Thanks, man. Dan, both left and Oregon. You guys had a lot of issues of giving up big plays in the passing game of the first game against Oregon. What do you feel if you guys need to do better this time around to make sure that doesn't happen? Just the same mindset. We got to challenge these receivers. You know, every dog has their day. Maybe some people didn't have their day that game. But we'll look out there and hopefully change the narrative. And we still play with the same confidence, same technique. And, you know,
Bill Rebellion, what's the problem with this patch? TenZell, obviously, had a tough game and that one. What have you seen from him and how he's responded? Do you get a sense of from him? How pumped he is for this rematch? Oh, yeah, he's super stoked for this rematch. His preparation has been very good. He's always been preparing, even though it didn't go the way he wanted to go that game. But he just always had his confidence. And we're going to see a big game out of him this week. And, you know, I know you guys wanted to play them in anapolis. But the fact that you get to play them at the Rose Bowl, I mean, get a second chance. And people have said, you don't get that very often. How determined are you guys to take advantage of it? We're super, super determined. We watched film. I mean, we've lost a lot of film. The first time we played them, now we've got another six games that they played up film to watch. And it's just, they've grown a lot as a team. Same as us. We've grown a lot. We're not the same team. We were when we played them week one or weeks six or whatever. But now we're out there and going to play fast, physical, and everything like that.
All right, Jordan, we're going to jump to the to assume a question here from Joey Kaufman. Columbus Dispatch. Well, my bad, not you Joey. Can we tea Robinson? The athletic. Hey, Jordan, you've moved around a lot in the second day in your career. And now kind of getting some many more safety reps. What is it like at this point when when Walt or Coach Mills comes to you and asks you to do some mouse and then just how much can you lean on the experiences you've had and moving around when you're trying to learn something new in the middle of season? Means a lot. We always talk about this is being on selfish. Whether that's making plays or not making plays or doing your job so another person can make plays. That's kind of what we pride ourselves on. And it's just fun. We move around different positions. I'm always up for a new challenge. And a lot of people in the country can't do that. I just hold myself to that standard where I can play any position and excel at it. Okay.
Anybody else need to question? Let me know. But otherwise we're going to go to Austin more of the podcast. Jordan, when you were talking about watching film Oregon, which one do you think is more valuable to you watching that against yourself? Seven games ago, even if you've changed or the ensuing six games for Oregon, which one do you put more stock in? I kind of both. For me, I kind of watch what I did. Things I did well. Things I didn't do too well against them. And their team is changing. The life of scheme has changed. Some players have been out those stretch of games. So I really watched the past game we played. And I know they're going to go back to some of the stuff that they liked, of course. And different games like Penn State, maybe Illinois, they run a lot of men. So just watching, watching stuff like that. Every game matters. So yeah. Jordan, thank you very much. Thank you. I really plan as much. So I just wanted to get more experience under my belt. So I can bring younger guys with me because I've been through a lot of work.
One of those younger guys, we're seeing it out here. It's the first time I've scored all these last years. What have you seen from Lil? I kind of felt like last year we all forgot about him because he was hurt. Now he's running almost a second man out behind you and tied. What have you seen in the event? He's going to work hard. He's going to stay quiet. He's going to work hard. And that's what I love about him. He focuses. He don't really talk much. He's going to get the job done. Do a job right. He really has any mistakes. What would be a successful season? A national championship? A ring. When all the games we don't want to lose anything. We got a mindset that we can't be beat. And we just got to go show it. That mindset, different. It seems like you guys expect a national championship every year. This year even more so. You guys have all come back for this. You guys have all decided that that was enough. Does that just keep feeling different? Or is there not really any difference? It's just the same work. It's definitely a difference. Everyone working harder. We noticed our last run. Most of us don't have any years after this.
So we got to go bigger, grow home and we're not trying to go home. It's finished big. We know what you guys think of Michigan. But when you look at what they did, they won the national championship. And you guys took them down to the final minute. Right? You know what I mean? I mean, you were right there. Something goes a little different. You guys could have won that game against them. Does that tell you anything about like that? Hey, you guys want to win a national championship. But you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the national championship last year. Like you're that close. So I'm saying we just like work harder. That's kind of coach makes a saying. You know, nobody cares. It's just work harder. Like those, you know, when we played Georgia. Same thing. Last, last play, you know, they went on the win in the 90s. So we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season. I think we'll be fine. How frustrating is that? You're that close against the last two national titles. Of course, as you know, it's frustrating. But you can't change the outcome. You can't really dwell on it. You just got to, you know, come back and work harder.
Do things better than you did last year. And hopefully the outcome will change. Is that as you get older, you can learn. And I thought that was working harder than you always find out there's a little more. You could have been doing it. Yeah, definitely. I mean, that's how that's what growing up is basically in college. I thought, French New Year I was working as hard as I could. But now I look back at it. I really wasn't working hard at all compared to what I'm doing now. So just to learn anything. The standard is a 16. And the answer to like, what do you need it to be to be your best? Uh, 80, 85. I mean, I can, it's all on me. I just, I think it's a little higher. I was just trying to be funny. But I mean, it's all on me. I just got to run harder. Get the shape. It's been a thing. The idea of potentially 15 or 17 years. I think, I think we, I definitely can last. I was just, you know, we got to get the young guys to come along with us.
We can't play 50 snaps a game. That's just too much on our bodies. Just everybody. Like, online, D-line. We got to get those younger guys to play, you know. Get that pieces on the D-line and the online and everywhere else. So we can last that long. Speaking of what's up, light play, my dog. Did you like playing that new snap to me? Last year, I don't know. I don't know if any of us were really expected to be playing that next. Uh, yeah, I did. Unless we were like winning by like a lot. I thought like, there are no moments you know I can go sit down or something. But we're playing them big games like, you know, Notre Dame too. Those kind of games. Of course, I want to be because I know I can contribute. And I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I can get the job done. What stands out about Kaden McDonald? Is he got the key? Oh, you guys are the second. Oh, yeah, definitely. K-Mac is a K-Mac animal. Y'all, you haven't really seen the yet, but in practice, he shows all the time. He's just, he's growing right now. He has to work at the, he just has to get, you know, in the playbook and things like that. You guys are about the exact same size. Listen, you're both listening to six three, you're three twenty seven, he's three twenty six.
Yeah, he's, I kind of look at him like my junior, but you know, K-Mac, he's going to be a great player. He's got to develop more and get into playbook. So really a lot on you older guys. There's that large group of young guys and then they just see your senior in the back. Is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys? Yeah, definitely. We got to be leaders. Like I said, we got to have them play this year. We can't just play all the snaps. They got to get in there and get some work. And we got to get them right during the all season. So they can play and not just play. They want to like contribute like make plays tackle sex. It seems like these guys get bigger each one of the first one in class because they're not bigger. Do those guys kind of, there's going to kind of while you're in the cell. Yeah, they're definitely some big dudes. And they all work hard. I've only seen much of some day too when I'm passing on. But throughout the workouts, they've been working hard. They're determined. I have to say that. And it looks like they're ready to work at me. How important this is.
It feels like there's a lot of great defense that you have big athletic defensive tactics. You can eat up space, but also move right through this. Is that an inquiring maybe from great defense? To have guys like you that have some balls, but also a great feed. I think that is definitely I think if you look at the last couple of national championship winners, like team of North, they got two good detaco, two athletic detacos. Look at Georgia, two athletic detacos. I think that's definitely need if you want to go on that big run and beat those big teams. If you think about that, they're going to fight by the defense attack. It's like, what's Jordan, Jordan Davis and DL Carter? Let's miss again. It's Chris Jenkins. Couple of more questions. Do you mind if you like how? I mean, you understand it because you play it, but I feel like some time, I don't know, are people realizing how important defense tackles are? A little bit more than they used to? I think so. I think they're starting to develop more and more of these like freakiest detacos.
Yeah. Like in the combine, just now you see in like those guys, they're moving four to four seven eights and things like that. So we'll see. Do you think it when you think about those freakiest athletic defense attacks? How do you think you fit into that mold of that kind of player? You watch that and say, yeah, that's me. Yeah, definitely. I think I'm top notch when it comes to detacos, but I don't want to, you know, get a big head, but you know, watch it come on. I watch it do the drills. I have a tape here, you're like, you're looking like my film. So I think I'm up there with all this. Tyler, can you become like a artist and it comes in the bad end of the past? The figure of the legs, kind of your things. When you're going, you're not doing as much a weapon. How do you work on that? Do you have like a gold one, I don't remember how much you have. Like you have a gold one, I'm going to do one. I mean as many as I can have, I think I have more than that. But I think they've counted. I think they've counted some of them and some of them were like just listed. So, but I think we work on drills matching the hand.
I think that's goes big and what we do is a D line, you know, just affecting the quarter of that is. Anyway, you can, it's just great for the defense, you know, just that little thing you cover it is I, you know, he might throw it. A little bit to the left to our player. So, it's something that you really, really have to work on. It's very, that's one of the things that you've maybe worked on the most. You don't have to continue time here because there are a few guys that I've seen. Like, oh, that past, we've seen it take a minute. We don't have to ask for the style. We're kind of, kind of expected for the next one. I think I just have like a, like a eye for the ball comment. I kind of just look at the quarterback and just, I see him like load up. I just try to get in his ways and sometimes he just throws it to me. I don't know. I'm irritated if you like to be a high state quarterback. I'm getting a bad dog passes. I mean, they get frustrated by, you know, we're a team, you know, we're just getting better. Watch a lot of, a lot of different backs, man. They just learn to grow for them. You got to pick your top three backs and you got to go right now. One, two, three. I don't really have a top three, but I'll give you, I'll give you one.
I would say, say, Juan Gibbs and I like McCaffrey. Although he was injured this year, I like McCaffrey. Who's the best back in this drive? Best back in this drive. I lead out of the yard. That's y'all, that's y'all decision. Playing well, Howard, but I'm going to remember most. We're a Howard, man. He's just such a great leader, man. It's just like in moments where, you know, usually a lot of players they fold, man. He was just always calm and relaxed, man. He, just the leader that he was, man, that's one thing I'm going to remember about him. Yeah, he's, he's going to be really good, man. He's on Coach Lock. I think he got the transfer in as well from West Virginia. And just that one, two punch with them both as well. They're going to be really good backs. And so James, people's, man, he's smart. The way that he goes about his business, man, he's mature. And so, man, he's growing, you know, just as a person and as a player.
And so, man, yeah, definitely Ohio State, you know, that running back room is in great hands. Right now, looking at the U.S. body, but I'm just talking about the race and personality and the approach. I'll keep that up until the end of the same year. Yeah, Coach, Coach Hartline, man. He's full of energy, man. And he's creative as well, you know, I'm just learning from him as well, you know, I'm trying to run more outside the backfield. It was being able to learn from Coach Hartline. And so, he's definitely creative at what he does. And he brings a lot of energy to the team as well. And so, I think that would do really good. Straight away, and it's all the way to the playoffs. That's what we want to do. That's what we want to do. Just intensity, man. Just intensity, man. And since he got the playoffs, every game, man, is like the intensity got, you know, higher and higher. And so, you know, being able, I know in the lead, it's the same thing. Even if it's not the playoffs, just every game and intensity, it keeps getting higher and higher. So, yeah, you just, I know you got to bring it, you know, each and every day and come in and work. Just like Ohio State, you know, I definitely feel like Ohio State. They definitely do a good job of preparing us for that.
You know, I just remember, even before going through this process, I'll talk to a lot of players before that. And they told me a lot of just about how much Ohio State prepared them, you know, for the NFL. And so, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I know I took a couple of days off after the National Championship. And then, shoot, right after that, I'm writing sample Florida and I'm right to it. And so, yeah, I think while I trained, I trained that on your performance. I think it's called the House of Athlete or the Compound now. They did a good job, man. They're just bringing us in and the way they went about training us, man. They did a really good job. The Bucking Nears, no, I haven't. Temple, a Tampa nice. It's a nice city, man. Really nice. The 40 to broad and avert. Yeah.
Yeah, no, man. It's really all about technique and then it's about mindset as well. It's, I said, man, I'm not going to let you get hit. You know, and so, I don't know if I gave up a sack. I'm not sure that, but I know if I did, I haven't given up too many. And so, man, it's for the love of my brother's, though, man. Making sure the ball get in their hands, you know, the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed. You know, you had to hit the break just a few days later today. What is something you've been working on right now? What is something you've been working on right now? What is something you've been working on right now? In my game, you can't really work on this, you know, in all season. I feel like it's more so, you know, you got to put the pads on.
You got to go through some inside run, you know, maybe. It's really just continuing to run through tackles. And so, that's, I feel like that's one of the areas in my game. You know, I want to continue to get better at it. I feel like I did a good job of that my senior year. And so, I just want to continue to build on that. Yes, I did. Some people say you look like an artist tomorrow. You look like an artist tomorrow. You look like an artist tomorrow. I did meet with New Orleans as well. I've never got that comparison. Actually, I know I have a Camera shoe. Yeah, man, I have a Camera great, great back, man. Just what he does and those 101 matchups, he's dangerous, man. And he's so smooth. He's so smooth as well. I'm not going to lie. He's smooth. So, did you play rock and roll? You don't know what you're doing. Yeah. Inside zone from stack, being able to hit that thing downhill. And I'll say the next one is probably just an option out of the backfield. You know, a man and man coverage. You're getting on that linebacker.
And so. Yeah, I say the man the biggest thing is the way that he carries himself, man. And the way that man, he approaches the game. He comes in with the mindset, you know, he's going to work every single week. You know, every practice, you know, he's working hard, you know, even shoot him. I don't know, every good, I think he had a, every game was a good game for him, man. And so, but still, man, he always has the mentality to mindset that, you know, he's going to come in each and every day. He's going to continue to work and get better, man. And so, he's definitely, man, he's going to be a special player, man. He really is. I'm not a star kid. You know, some injuries. I think it's a national champion. When he went back on it, what do you want to stand out for?
And when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about, he gives you that peace and comfort. You know, even in those moments, man, where it's so hard that you can't explain. It's like, man, I'm going through this, but like, how am I still filled with this internal joy? You know, how do I have so much peace in this situation? And so, that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you. And so, Man, those guys have such a great mentality, man.
Am I just really loved their mentality, especially Q as well. You know, I talked about Will Howard, his leadership, but Quencha, I'm mentality, man. That boy just, yeah, that boy just gifted, you know, you see, you know, sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like, you know, he should have a negative five yards. And as soon as you know it, you know, he, that running through somebody, still farming somebody and she was just gaining a 10. It's like, you some of the things he does, he just realized it's too different than God actually. I think, yeah, man, I think it's just like, he's just gifted, man, too, beyond it. He's just gifted, you know, he's a big back, you know, he's strong and so, you know, he's able to do, he's able to do those things. So, yeah, man, it's definitely, you know, I look at his game and I want to, you know, at the same time, I want to learn from Quencha. You know, I want to look at his game and it's like, man, where can I get better at as well? You know, that's the type of player I am. I'm always looking to get better, man. I'm always looking to grow as a player. Julian Sand. Oh, yeah, he's going to be a great, but he's going to be a great quarterback, man.
He's so, so accurate and so, he's definitely, man, I know Coach Dez is definitely going to get him right. Just, you know, container, grow as a leader, container, grow as a player. And so, he's going to be really good for a high state. He's, I know just the quarterback position. I feel like, you know, the quarterbacks in the past, they've, they've definitely been vocal. And so, I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to ask Julian Sand as well. It's to be that vocal leader and lead the, and lead the offense and lead the team. Shoot, man, he has, he has a build like JK Dobbins. And I kind of see them, you know, similarities in their game as well. And I know JK Dobbins, he was a great running back. I feel like he's not talked about his, not a lot, but man, his career here, you watch his highlights is great.
I appreciate you all, you have to go. Thank you. Thank you.
Thank you. Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you. Thank you.
Thank you. Can you talk about the mental thing? When I say ready, I think it's pretty much like everything physically, mentally, emotionally. I think I'm there. I asked a little more time. How different is that responsibility? That should be exactly what you call that. If you want to ask if you knew you were a homemaker. I feel like it's a way bigger responsibility with me having to step up this year. But I kind of go about it the same way. Like last year I was attention to what everything I did. I feel like this year is going to be the same thing. It's probably a little bit more. For somebody who's some reason to never see me start helping me. It won't work? How's everybody working? I say... describe my game. When you think of me, you would think of like a bullet, like a silver bullet. Like I'm really a bullet.
I'm always on the ball. That's how I like to play a thing. You know what I'm about to play? No, I ain't got to be my nickname. But... I'm saying that the thing can be that so... Oh yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, that's like... I've got a more important question for Patricia's style. And how it's free. I mean, how does that fit the view? And what are you enjoying about it? The whole lane and that kind of stuff? I think it fit me because... I don't know, I just like the defense. I feel like we got... Like you said, we got a lot of freedom. We're moving around a lot. A lot of the terms is like... You know, I don't know. I don't really not answer that. That's okay, doesn't it? You can go on your end stakes a little bit more, maybe. And it's not so thinking of too much. I don't even know if I say that because... There's a lot of thinking going on, but it's like... I just like it's defense. I like her Patricia defense. I like what you got going on. What was it, Sadwin? CJ left the room. Uh... Now I wanted to say that. I was kind of like happy for him. Yeah, that's what you want. No, no.
No. All right. No, that's my dog. I'm going to say yeah. Kind of missing a little bit, but yeah, I'm happy for him. Well, don't think. Go ahead one last question. Coach Daze talked a lot about the guys who played some last year, but maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for... I don't know. That wasn't maybe your national championship you guys will win your own. How much do you feel that as a guy who certainly contributed last year, but will be in this bigger role and along with some of your classmates? Yeah, I do feel like... I did win the national championship, but like you said, my role wasn't the same as how it's going to be this year. So yeah, I definitely want to go get another one. Experience that feeling with me, be on the field, a lot more place. That's it. Great. Oh, Bill, thank you very much. I'm so happy. I feel like you should be using it to make me turn out. Sometimes like basketball, I want to be on that just like the fed, but you know, I got to stay in the stage playing some balls. Exactly.
Yeah, that's a very question. I mean, I feel like these two can enter that for the beer right now. I think KJ and Hero can enter that. Well, I don't know what to say about that. What do you guys think? Well, what do you guys think? I don't know. I go against here every day. You know, this man is strong. Right? I'm talking about life. You have to pass for a kid like me. You sound like you can just do a thing. I know a few of you have a feeling of violence. Just to hold on to your hands. And he got the grip. He doesn't give up on the play. Like you said, he's going to go in and watch the film. He's doing everything better than you can see the 100 beer man. I'm like, just going to knock out this night and see the beer man at the game. You know, can you just follow us around all these? He's not like a coach, man. He's not like a coach. Chip Kelly's in full exchange. Your mind about maybe like the idea of tack over his guard. Because obviously his offensive privilege was for like offensive line play. He has a few things that are you settled in the guard?
I want to say maybe I don't know, but I mean, when I first heard he got the job, I was really excited because I'm one of those guys who's the tempo. I can run with the tempo. You know what I mean? I'm playing basketball all life and set up football. And I feel like just the fast pace often, so we're running really fits the guys we have right now. I'm really excited for that. I know you can throw a football in 65 yards, but can you kick a football? 75 yards and blinker just. Probably question. Lincoln, what was your question? How is your room after view? He's a blessing, man. I can't complain. He's a great guy. What's his name? His name's Lincoln. Teen Hoes. Who's cleaner? I think we're both really clean. That's why we kind of pick each other as roommates because we're very clean and we don't like our burdens really messy. Well, it's true though. It's a true, it's a bit more pretty clean. Luke, are you still a cross-training at Tag Bullsum or have you just been all-guards this
break? So far I've been all-guards. I really don't know. Like I said, I'm taking it practice by practice. I could end up being a back attack or I could not, but now I'm just really focused in on this past practice and the next one. What do you mean? Yeah. Oh, that mean a lot. You know, you put a lot of work in to play here. It's been a dream just for being in Ohio kids. I'm from Ohio kids perspective. I mean, that's the biggest switch possible out if I would say that's going to be pretty cool. What was it like to last year at first game getting on the field for the first time for that guy? It didn't feel like, this is going to be a weird answer, but it didn't feel like I was playing a game yet. If that makes sense, I did. I was pretty locked in. I felt like just no anxiousness, no stress, no nothing. I just went in that first game and was like, shoot out in here now. It's time to roll. You know, it didn't really hit me. I was like, it didn't even hit me after. I was like, what would you feel there? And if I get out there at the end of it, I'm just like, honestly, I don't know. I felt less nervous. I didn't have a high school and it makes no sense.
A lot. I mean, I'm learning from Josh Ann Austin. I think, prior to one of my biggest role models here is my bigger brother in my first game. Tell him I'm a padea. I don't know. This is padea, okay. No. Yeah, yeah. So, yeah, padea and Austin, those are my guys, man. I'm even even miles to, I mean, all three of them. Those are my roommates and they're progressing every day as well on. And I'm excited to see where they can get to. I'm excited to play on the field. I'm trying to get an actual awful. Oh, yeah, you know, it's been really helpful. You know, just keeping my mind just settled and straightforward on the next play. What do you think the biggest stuff is? It's a great question. Like I said, I mean, I just need to take consistent in my word. I think that's the biggest thing for me is just thinking system. I'm worried about the next one. So you got it from the guy you were playing. Yeah. Wow, that's weird. Yeah, I mean, I guess they didn't want to get my nerves up, but like I was ready. I mean, I did, I took most of the ones. That's all camping. I mean, I was already, I was pretty much it.
Yeah, I wasn't really nervous. It started the game. What was his advice to you? Yeah. He said you got it. You mean you're going against Ty League and Kyle every day and practice. I mean, it's not different. Almost different. Are you now both doing tend to get two starts in the game as a player, you know, having, having that under your belt? I mean, I'm more confident. I know what's going on. I can see like, I can see what's going on with the defense. I know what's going on. I know what's coming. I mean, I understand the game's a lot better than what it was. I don't say much. Which adds up to what? Fast, the start, the end, etc. Yeah, you playing with that dust in our line. I mean, if we get out early, it's, you get the defense change in place. It's like, it's changing their defense. You start fast. I mean, they're trying to get the call in the play, but you start fast. I'm not going back. I'm going to trust a lot of their shots. Yeah, of course they is pretty much dead. They deserve the play. You know, some warm up, but would you expect this week from your role? Wherever they need me, if it's left right, wherever I need to go in, I go in and go
to do the front of me. I like playing tackle. I'm looking back to high school days, but I should back in high school. I was really random all of what, really into the passes, but it was fun. Changes, you got my feet better, I would say. How confident you feel like you could play there, if you need me? They want me there, I guess I'll play there. I mean, they need me. They need me. Also in the illness that swept through the office of the line room. A lot of times coaches and players have said that that was still relying for the groom, you know, getting you experience among others. What was that like for you and double-dipping, playing some tackle, playing some guard, the same practice. It was based like a group effort, like for me, you know, we had guys out. We just had to go back practice. All five guys were wherever they were playing, we just got to go. How much of that accelerate your development, like that time with the ones you actually did? They really did. I was jumped in there.
I didn't really know. So we wanted to practice with practices, but like after those, I was like, you're out of the gift. You know, my confidence grew. It seemed like you were sort of a settling in process for you and the Akron game. Maybe play got better if the game went on. Especially in the ground game, things seem to take on. What was there a moment when it clicked on the field for you? Like was there nerves and then a time of settling in? I guess how? Taking you through kind of that first game mentally. Yeah. First game, obviously you're going to have nerves. Be the first time starter. But then like after the first couple of plays, meaning you have nerves naturally. So that's first complete. I was good. I was just rolling. Also, it was a weird game. The first time I was trying to play in the last day was also the first start. Yeah. You, yeah. It's, but like, I prepared well and camp and practice all week. And I was, I was ready. Yeah. I have two multi-year starters.
I did a lot. I mean, I could ask them, hey, what we got here. But I was prepared well. I mean, I was telling Jimmy and said, hey, we're going to block. Probably emotional side of it. What is it guys from Ohio? What does it mean to start a game? It was always my dream to come here and play and start. And having that played me, I was going to keep going and keep building those days. And go games and keep building. What a much younger Austin, don't you do it? People from you with that. No, not really. I don't think even I told my life. I asked my younger self, even committed. I wouldn't believe that now having a couple of starts. Yeah. Awesome. Has this happened faster than you? I think we're going to come here with players. I guess you're technically a sophomore. Play as a richer player. No, I knew that year two, I was going to see you some playing time. Now starting week one year two, I didn't see that, but I was ready in spring ball.
I knew I was going to play some soft games. What does it mean to you to not only get the opportunities to play, but you play well enough now. Coaching staff trust you. They put out there whatever the situation was. To earn that. So where we want to get to. I guess it shows like my preparation, my hard work, and just everything I put into it. And I just finally show up on a field. There are moments, the soft season, the end of the spring, and the end of the camp. I don't realize that you could play at this high level, with the ones. You know, if you need to. Yeah, the definitely was in training camp. I mean, blocking highly can tie every day. Like it feels, it feels a lot of confidence in doing it well and not like getting balled or anything. There's defensive tag wasn't that. Hero in Jason Moore in Taiwan. All those guys. I mean, pretty much anyone on the deepened line gets your face out of time. So, and came back as well.
So yeah. I'm so pretty a lot of them. I would work like the power of the ability. That would bring me a lot of how much can he help you? He helped me a lot. And I'm proud that he's our starting center, not someone else's, but. I mean, he's like the captain of the line. He's another voice on the line with guys like Josh Fryer and Josh Simmons, Donnie and Tiger. That means another voice and another captain on the line. Look, ways of having that. And I'm with this much experience. Help. You're in the middle of the line. I mean, a lot. He can tell you, like before the play was going on, like how to block someone. Like, what you need to do. And it helps a lot. And Tiger is talking about how calm he is. How much does that benefit you? You have a guy who's kind of been there and seen. It makes us more calm, like especially me and Dave, those are the first stars. So like we were up here. What, what Seth, like he brought us down.
I mean, we were like fine. Like our emotions weren't high. We settled in. Is that like something he tells you? Is that something you could pick up on by how he's acting? How do you kind of mean sense what he's trying to do? How he's acting? And what I mean, him, when we're on the side of him, both Josh Donney, like he was telling us, like, Hey, we're cool. Like we got it. But it's pretty much like, oh, everyone, old cool group. How much do that? As a first time starter, how much did you end that? Me a lot. That was my first time ever using iPads. We didn't use the iPads in high school. But I mean, you can say, like, try to remember the defense. You can just come on a silent and bring up a play and get help. Probably the first or second, but after that, I thought we'd say all right. Awesome. Thank you very much. It seems like training part is a part of the time. They're getting bigger and stronger. Yeah. It's like the culture part.
Yeah. How much of the fact is that part of your change? It's also, it's a lot. I mean, I feel like you can't be able to transform your body like I have or like people here come and do that without having that mentality part with it. It's like we always talk about competitions here and our culture is fight. So we're always here to compete. I feel like that is just, that's what gets you in this mindset. When you talk about that transformation, can you just give us a little sense, maybe with numbers or body fat or like what you do with the weight group, how big is that transformation? I don't have really specific numbers, but I just like, it's more just like I can just, I feel like feeling when I'm playing. Like I remember how it felt to play when I just got here and now I know how it feels to play like, like, just today. Like it feels physically different on my body. It's like, it's just, I'm getting used to it.
That makes sense. I can't imagine feeling like that. Hadea also said about you that you are just a completely different guy from last year. You hear the word this year? Let's get it done. So you're here? Do you feel like you weren't at that place mentally? I think I was, but I think I had some, I would say like, kind of like confidence issues, like I was just, but, you know, I mean, I work past it and I know I can, I know who I am and I know I can be here. So if you have confidence issues, how do you get through it? Is it yourself, is it teammates, is there someone in your family that makes you believe that you can do it? I know I can do it. It's not like, those are all, it's on the past now. Did the past play time in a very obvious opportunity? Guys had the stuff up with you on the business. I helped you get over that confidence issue there because it's now a never-incision opportunity.
So, kind of, it's just like, I mean, just, I mean, it's just being here. Like, I feel like being here every day, working with the guys every day, just like, you know, you become this person that you might not have like, you might not have felt like you were before that, but like coming here, working every day, stacking these days, like, you know, I just feel like I realized who I am and I know what I can do now. Well, I want to be able to have this for myself, but are you? This is the second time I feel like, you've been to yourself that you actually belong here and you've been here. I knew I could play here. I mean, it's just, it was like the, like, I just, I don't know how to explain it. I just, like, I've always known I could play here. It's just, I'm just, like, let's go. Like, I'm ready to, like, I'm ready to attack.
What are the guys that helped you to figure that out? For sure, I think KJ was a big influence. Ty Hamilton and Ty League, they all, they all helped me a bunch last year, kind of just pushing through, you know. I really plan as much. So I just wanted to get, like, more experience under my belt. So I can, you know, bring the other guys with me because I've been through a lot of great. One of those younger guys we're seeing, like, the first time I scored all year last year, was it? What have you seen from Lill? Because I feel like I should have real forgot about it because he's heard it. Now he's running, you know, almost a second man out behind you and Ty. What have you seen in the interview? Well, as a workhorse, he, he goes, stay quiet. You go and work hard. And that's all I love about him. His focus is he don't really talk much. He's going to get a job done, do a job right. He rarely has any mistakes. What would be a successful season? A national championship? When all the games were one of Lewis and the thing, we got a mindset that we can't be beat.
And we just got to go show it. That mindset different. Seems like you guys expect the national championship every year. This year, even more so, you guys have all come back for this. You guys have all decided, like, an up and down. Does that just keep you feeling different? Or is there not really any difference? It's just the same work. It's definitely a difference. Everyone working harder. We noticed our last run. Most of us don't have any years after this. So we got to go bigger going home and we're not trying to go home. Finish big. We know what you guys think of Michigan. When you look at what they did, they won the national championship. And you guys took them down to the final minute. Right? You know what I mean? I mean, you were right there. Something goes a little different. You guys could have won that game against them. Does that tell you anything about, like, that, hey, you guys want to win a national championship? But you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the national championship last year, like you're that close. So I'm saying, we just like work harder. That's kind of a coach makes a saying, you know, nobody cares.
Just work harder. Like those, you know, won't play Georgia. It's the same thing. Last, last play, you know, they went on the win in 90s. So we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season. I think we'll be fine. How frustrating is that? You're that close against the last two national titles. Of course, as you know, it's frustrating, but you can't change the outcome. You can't really dwell on it. You just got to, you know, come back and work harder, do things better than you did last year and hopefully the outcome will change. Is that as you get older, you kind of learn. I thought that was working harder than you always find out there's a little more than you could have been doing. Yeah, definitely. I mean, that's how that's what growing up is basically in college. I thought freshman year I was working as hard as I could, but now I look back at it. I really wasn't working hard at all compared to what I'm doing now. So just to learn anything. What do you need it to be to be your best? Oh, it is 75. 80, 85. I mean, I can, it's all on me. I just, I think it's a little higher. I was just trying to be funny, but I mean, it's all on me. I just got to run harder in shape.
It's been a fact. The idea of potentially 16 or 17 years ago. I think I think I definitely can last. I was just, you know, we got to get the young guys to come along with it. But as we can't play 50 snaps of game, that's just too much on our bodies. Just everybody like online, D line. We got to get those younger guys to play, you know, get that pieces on the D line and the online and everywhere else so we can last that long. Speaking of life. If you like playing that new snap again last year. I don't know if any of us were really expected to play that next time. Oh, yeah, I did unless we were like winning by like a lot. I thought like there are no moments you know, I can go sit down or something, but we're playing them big games like, you know, Notre Dame to North, those kind of games. Of course, I want to be because I know I contribute and I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I get the job done.
What stands out about Taden McDonald is he got that you guys in the second game? He came back as a came back to animal y'all you haven't really seen it yet, but in practice, he shows all the time. He's just he's growing right now. He has to work at the he just has to get, you know, in the playbook things like that. You guys are about the exact same size. Listen, you're both listening to six three, you're free 27. He's free 26. Yeah, I kind of look at him like my junior, but you know, came in, he's going to be a great player. He's just got to develop more and getting the playbook. It really a lot on you older guys. There's that large group of young guys and then there's the seniors in the back as part of your task for this year to bring those guys. Yeah, definitely we got to be leaders. Like I said, we got to have them play this year. We can't just play all the snaps. They got to get in there and get some work. And we got to get them right during the all season. So they can play and not just play. They want to like contribute like make plays tackles.
Yeah, they're definitely some big dudes and they all work hard. I'm really seeing much of something day two. But throughout the workouts, they've been working hard, you know, they they're determined to actually. And it looks like they're ready to work. It feels like there's a lot of great defense is that you have big athletic defense attack. So you can eat up space. But also move, you know, right? Is that is that is that environment maybe for a great defense to have guys like you that have some fault. But also a great team. I think that is definitely I think if you look at the last couple of national championship winners are like team on North. They didn't know they got to get a detaco to athletic detacles. Look at Georgia to athletic detacles. I think that's definitely need if you want to go on a big run and beat those big teams. If you think about this, if they want to define by the defense with actors like what's Georgia?
Jordan Davis and Jeff Carter. Let's miss you again. It's Chris Jenkins. I mean, you understand. But I feel like some time that I don't know are people realizing how important defense tackles are a little bit more than they used to. I think so. I think they're starting to develop to develop more and more of these like freakiest detacles. Yeah, like in the combine just now you see in like those guys, they're moving forward to 478 and things like that. And when you think about the freakish attack on how do you think you fit into that mold of that kind of player? You watch that and say, yeah, that's me. Yeah, definitely. I think I'm top notch when it comes to detacles, but I don't want to you know get a big head, but you know watch it come on. I watch it. Do the drills. I have to see like looking like my film. So I think I'm up there. You become like a artist. You know, you're going.
You're not doing much. I don't know. Do you have like a goal? I don't remember how many I've got. I mean, as many as I can have, I think I have more than that. But I think he said it. I think they can count some of them and some of them were like just listed. But I think we work on Joe's matching the hand. I think that goes big and we do as a deal on, you know, just affecting the quarterback is anyway you can. It's just great for the defense. That little thing covering his eye, you know, he might throw it a little bit to the left to our player. So let's something that you really, really have to work on. You can do that. It's one of the things that you can maybe work on the most. You can do your time here because there are a few guys that I've seen. Oh, that pastor just takes it out. We don't have to ask this guy. We're kind of kind of expected for the physical. I think I just have like a eye for the ball kind of. I kind of just look at the quarterback and just, I see him like load up. I just try to get in his ways.
And sometimes he's throws it to me. I hear it's even to the Ohio State quarterbacks game. I mean, they get frustrated by you know, we're team, you know, we're just good. I should lot of a lot of different backs, man. They just learn to grow for them. You got a pick on top three backs. You got a pull right now. One, two, two. I don't really have a top three, but I'll give you, I'll give you one. I would say, say, quan, Gibbs and I like McCaffrey auto. He was injured this year. I like McCaffrey. I appreciate it. Who's the best back in this drive? Best back in this drive. I lead out of the yard. That's y'all decision. Playing well, Howard. What I'm going to remember most. We're a Howard man. He's just such a great leader. Such a great leader man. It's just like in moments where you know, usually a lot of players they fold. Man, he was just always calm and relaxed man.
He just the leader that he was man. That's one thing I'm going to remember about him. Yeah, he's going to be really good man. He's on Coastalog. I think he got the transfer in as well from West Virginia. Just that one, two punch with them both as well. They're going to be really good backs. And so James people is man. He's smart the way that he goes about his business man. He's mature. And so man, he's growing, you know, just as a person in as a player. And so man, yeah, definitely Ohio State. You know, that running back room is in great hands. Yeah coach Coach Hartline man. He's full of energy man. And he's creative as well. You know, I'm just learning from him as well. You know, I'm trying to run more outside the backfield. It was being able to learn from coach Hartline. And so he's definitely creative at what he does. And he brings a lot of energy to the team as well. And so I think that would do really good. Just the intensity man.
And since he got the playoffs, every game and it's like the intensity got, you know, higher and higher. And so, you know, being able, I know in the lead, it's the same thing. Even if it's not the playoffs, just every every game and intensity keeps getting higher and higher. And so yeah, you just, I know you got to bring it, you know, each and every day and come in and work. Just like Ohio State, you know, I definitely feel like Ohio State. They definitely do a good job of preparing us for that. You know, I just remember even before going through this process, I'll talk to a lot of players before that. And they told me a lot of just about how much Ohio State prepared them, you know, for the NFL. And so yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I know I took a couple days off after the national championship. And then, shoot right after that, I'm writing sample Florida and I'm right to it. And so yeah, I think while I trained, I trained that your worth performance. I think it's called the House of Athlete or the Compound now. They did a good job, man.
They're just bringing us in and the way they went about training us, man. They did a really good job. I mean, that's what you did? The bucket near, you know what I haven't. It's a nice city, man. Really nice. The 40 to broad and avert. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. No, man. It's really all about technique. And then it's about mindset as well. And so I say, you know, it's for the love of my brother. It's for the love of will, how it is for the love of the receiver. So I got on the perimeter. Just making sure, you know, first of all, my quarterback doesn't get sacked. And I told Will, I think it was before the first game. I was like, I got your brother. I said, man, I'm not going to let you get hit. You know, and so I don't know if I gave up a sack. I'm not sure that. But I know if I did, I haven't given up too many. And so, man, it's for the love of my brothers, though, man, making sure the ball
getting in their hands. You know, they got the ball. And so, man, it's for the love of my brothers, though, man, making sure the ball getting in their hands, you know, the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed. You know, you had to hit the practice field later today. What is something you'd be working on right now, right? In my game, you can't really work on this, you know, in all season. I feel like it's more so, you know, you got to put the pads on. You got to go through some inside run, you know, maybe it's really just continuing run through tackles. And so that's, I feel like that's one of the areas in my game. You know, I want to continue to get better at it. I feel like I did a good job of that my senior year. And so I just want to continue to build on that. Yes, I did. Yes, I did. So, people, you look like no one is far out there. You get back in nursing every male and female. I did meet with New Orleans as well. I never got that comparison. Actually, I know I have a Camera shoe. Yeah, man, I have a Camera great, great back, man. Just what he does and those 101 matchups, he's dangerous, man. And he's so smooth. He's so smooth as well.
I'm not going to lie. He's smooth. So, the mid-to-favorite is a little bit of a down there. What's your future for the middle? Yeah. Inside zone from stack, being able to hit that thing downhill. And I'll say the next one is probably just an option route out of the backfield. You know, a man and man coverage. You're getting on that linebacker and so. Yeah, I say to man, the biggest thing is the way that he carries himself, man. And the way that man, he approaches the game. He comes in with the mindset, you know, he's going to work every single week. You know, every practice, you know, he's working hard. You know, even shoot, I don't know. I think he had a, every game was a good game for him, man. And so, but still, man, he always has the mentality to mindset that, you know, he's going to come in each and every day. He's going to continue to work and get better, man.
And so, he's definitely, man. He's going to be a special player, man. He really is. Man, a lot of ups and downs, man. It's just how you respond to adversity. And I feel like that's something that God has definitely helped me to do better. Is this, I'm not having something to lean on now. You know, I remember before I met him, you know, going through those adversity, I had nothing to run to. You know, you can run to people, but they still can't, it's not too much. They can't truly help you. You know, I feel like, you know, I feel like the only person that can truly help you is your relationship with Jesus Christ. And so, being able to lean on him, you know, he gives you, in those moments where it's tough, you know, where it's slow.
And so, you know, the back goes further. Which aspect do you do those other individuals that you run to bother with and from being around power? Um, man, those guys have such a great mentality, man. I just really love their mentality, especially Q as well. You know, I talked about Will Howard, his leadership, but Quincham mentality, man, um, that boy just, yeah, that boy just gifted. You know, you see, you know, sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like, you know, he should have a negative five yards. And as soon as you know it, you know, he, that running through somebody, still forming somebody and shooting us again to 10. And so, you know, he's just really like this two different guys. Yeah. Um, shoot, I think. Yeah, man, I think it's just like, he's just gifted, man, to be honest.
He's just gifted, you know, he's, he's a big back, you know, he's strong. And so, um, you know, he's, he's able to do, he's able to do those things. And so, um, yeah, man, it's definitely, you know, I look at his game and I want to, you know, at the same time, I want to learn from Quincham. You know, I want to look at his game and it's like, man, where, where can I get better at as well? You know, that's the type of player I am. I'm always looking to get better, man. I'm always looking to grow as a player. What's your last two tweets? Julian San. Oh, yeah, he's going to be a great, but he's going to be a great quarterback, man. He's so, so accurate. And so, um, he's definitely, man, I know Coach Dez definitely going to get him right. You know, um, container, grow as a leader, container, grow as a player. And so, he's going to be really good for how I stay. I'm going to be a great player. Uh, he's, I know just the quarterback position. Um, I feel like, you know, the quarterbacks in the past, they've, they've definitely been vocal. And so, I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to, um, ask Julian San as well. It's to be that vocal leader and lead the, um, and lead to offense and lead to steam. Thanks, guys. Thanks, guys. I'm sure you're going to be a great player. Shoot, man.
He has, he has a build like JK Dobbins. And, um, I kind of see them, you know, similar, similar, these in their game as well. And I know JK Dobbins, he was a great running back. Um, I feel like he's not talked about his, not a lot, but man, his career here, you watch his highlights is great. I remember, um, before I recruit, before I committed here, I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights like every, every, um, one of his years here, like four or five times. And so, man, he was such a great back. And, um, I feel like, you know, um, when I see JK Dobbins, when I see, um, James people, I see similarities to both of their games. I feel like they play the same. And so, appreciate you all. Yeah, I'll be going. This.
This. This.
This. This. This. right? This. This. This. This. This. This. Okay I'm going onto I gut up $ 가지고 like almost a different machine out there. Yeah, like, what does it feel like to be running around out there like you are, but with more, more back.
I just feel like I'm like, like, like more downhill, like stronger, like I'm taking all blocks better, it's a big, yeah. It is, it's daunting. Maybe that's not the correct term, but to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year and you played quite a bit last year instead. What do you have to get straight in your head by being on the field that much more? Just got to get ready to just play 30 more snaps. So, but are you, are you, how would you describe how much you're looking forward to it from an eight-stand point? Yeah, I'm looking forward to it. I'm ready for it. I'm ready for it. The text is open. It's a rematch in such a way, but it's not really two different teams. Do better than the last time you all played and stuff. How has that enhanced this camp for you and this team getting ready for the, where an opener of that magnitude? Yeah, with an opener like that, we've been emphasizing it a lot. We know we got coming, so we know we got to do it. We've been prepared for it. I already did probably work today. Yeah, I think you're asking for the right. I think Riley ready to play right now.
He advanced freshman, like he in the, he in the book, he stood in like he advanced and his measurements was crazy. Like he saw like a saw line to him. Or, like you said, you're ready. Right? I know you're ready. What was that process like during last season? Could you feel yourself becoming more and more ready? So, every team needed to do that? Yeah, because that's pretty much what my role was, which is whenever I was needed, I had to step up. So I feel like that's what built me into me being able to say I'm ready for this year. When you say ready, is it more physical thing? Is it a mental thing? When I say ready, I think it's pretty much like everything physically, mentally, most of me. I think I'm there. A different piece that he wanted to share with the last speaker, especially the freshman. Oh, that's the one more time. How different is that response to him? That's just the exact same motion. Oh, that's the one last. You knew you were a home player. Oh, I feel like it's a way bigger responsibility
with me having to step up this year, but I kind of go about it the same way. Like last year, I was attention over to everything I did. I feel like this year is going to be the same thing. It's probably a little bit more. For somebody who's some reason, I'm just trying to help you today. It won't work. How's everybody working? I say, describe my game. I say, when you think of me, you would think of like a bully, like a silver bully. I don't really bully. I'm always on the ball. That's how I like to play and think. What do you like about my body? No, I ain't got to be my nickname, but. So you don't say that the nickname to beat? Oh, yeah, yeah. You want a body? Yeah, yeah, yeah. I've got a lot of questions for Patricia's style. And how it's free. I mean, how does that fit you? And what are you enjoying about playing in that kind of style? I think it fit me because. I don't know, I just like the defense. I feel like we got, like you said,
we got a lot of freedom and we moving around a lot. A lot of the times is like, you know, I don't know. I don't really not answer that. That's okay. Does it kind of, you can go on your fan stakes. A little bit more, maybe. And it's not so thinking of too much. I don't even know if I say that because there's a lot of thinking going on, but it's like, I just like it's deep. I like her Patricia deep because I like what you got going on. What was it sad when CJ left the room? Uh, now I want to be too much sad. I was kind of like happy for him. Yeah, that's what you want. No. No. All right. No, that's my dog. That's my dog. So yeah, kind of missing a little bit. But yeah, I'm happy for him though. Well, don't think you go ahead one last question. Coach Gaines talked to one about the guys. Who played some last year, but maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for that wasn't maybe your national championship you guys will win your own. How much do you feel that is a guy who certainly contributed last year, but will be in this bigger role and a lot of some of your classmates?
Yeah, I do feel like, um, yeah, I do feel like I did win the Nady last year, but like you said, my role wasn't same as how's my beat this year. So yeah, I definitely want to want to go get another one experienced that, feeling maybe on the field, a lot more place. Great. Oh, Bill, thank you very much. Thanks, I got you. You need to offense compared to NFL, especially with the way he uses receivers. How do you anticipate your role? Engine it. How do you view the offense from a receiver perspective, specifically? Yeah. I mean, I think he likes to really push the ball down the field. He likes to be balanced. He likes to give different looks to a difference. You know, we're going to not to try to get too much into it, but we're going to use emotion, move some guys around and things of that nature. I think for myself, I feel comfortable playing any of the positions that is, that is asked whether it's the slot, the outside positions, and unique part about our offenses. I don't think necessarily you play the X or the Z because the pit on the formation or the hash, you can be the opposite. You can, you can be the X, but then you're to the field now you're the Z.
So you got to really learn the entire concept and know where you're out in the field, which I think makes everybody smarter players because you don't pigeonhole yourself, ah, I just play X, you know, I'm only in this position. Like, you get in two minutes, you're the Z. Now you got to know what to do. You may have the clear outrout or you may have the backside dig. Like, you got to know what you're doing. So I think he doesn't just say like, we're going to do this offense. He's really trying to create an offense that fits our personnel really well. That, that field boundary thing. Yeah. That's the thing in college, but it seems like it's more unique to clip. Is that something you're used to seeing in other offenses? You've been in the, yeah, definitely. I mean, I think if, if I'm on the left hash, like technically, I'm, I'm the X, you know, I'm in the boundary, but if we're on the right hash, I'm still on the left side. I'm really the Z in the concept because I'm to the field, I'm to the strength of the tight end. So, um, I've been in offenses like it's similar like that before. And, um, you know, I just think he, he, one thing I think that's really stood out as the compliments of our routes
that we have so far. Um, I feel like we have a chance to really, um, run similar stems, but there's different routes off those stems and things like that, which I think for receiver like myself who, uh, you get, you know, a really good look at DBs and they study your film, they study your splits, like having routes that look the same, but break off at different, different angles is extremely important because it feels like you have some versatility in your bag to go out with versus like, you got this hitch again, you're back side, like that's all you got, you know what I mean? So, um, yeah, he's just been a really good player, a person to work with and he's been really communicative with the leaders and how we want this offense to look like and some of the ideas that we may have as well. So, it's, it's been a really, uh, cool transition. You talk about the transitions, you've nerd offense in three years, probably your fourth and sixth years. Yeah. How do you not kind of build up some barriers? Yeah, man, I got to do this again. Right. I think, you know, human nature is always, um, a factor in whatever you do in life, but I think I try to make a conscious choice of coming in with a new year mentality each and every year.
And I think it's easy because we've had so many changes in, um, it's been great working with Marcus and Jaden and Jeff and Sam, all of everybody. Like, it's been great with working with all the quarterbacks and, um, I just have a mentality of not really being complacent. Like, I try to really focus on the things that I, I can come back better at this year and I've been working my, I butt off to do that. So, um, I think the easy thing and when I was younger, you're like, dang, like, you just want that consistency. You know what I mean? Like, you want that, um, something you could depend on, but like life isn't, life isn't always like that. So, um, I've been reinvigorated because of just the energy that DQ brings into our building each and every day and, and the coaches as well. Like, it's fun competing, you know what I mean? And sometimes I could get lost in the grind, but, um, I think the reason why you make it here at this level is because you, you fall in love with the competition of it. And I think the competition breathes the success because, um, that is really where you, the iron truly sharpens iron.
So, you know, other guys are going to make plays, but you get excited to go in there and, and know that, um, the next day we're going to go right back after the defense. So, um, for myself, I'm just looking forward to continue to grow with the quarterbacks that we have. Um, I mean, year six now, which is extreme blessing and, um, leader, one of the leaders in our room. And I just try to take the bull by the horns with that. And so, uh, that's really been my focus and, uh, you know, I'm excited for another year. To us, it's looked like you're being more vocal on the sidelines to help young guys. Definitely. Something you decided this offseason or? Uh, I think that's been a part of my maturation process as a leader. Um, I've always seen myself as somebody that was a, um, a leader by example. Um, but from coaches and other teammates I've had over the years, um, guys like to hear what I have to say for whatever reason sometimes. You know, and I think the biggest thing where I've tried to figure out where I fit in with my vocal leadership is I never wanted to be like a dictator.
You know what I mean? I never wanted to tell guys what to do or, or be a yellow or things like that. Like when I say something, I wanted to have power. I wanted to have meaning. And I hope, you know, the guys would feel the same way if they were to ask them that question. Um, cause I want to see all these guys win, man. Like it's, it's hard to make it in this league and stay in a career. And so anyway, I could help the receivers, the DBs. I'm talking to some alignment, Johnny, who's, who's rehabbing his foot. You know what I mean? Like everybody has a role and everybody has a different story and path. And so if I could share what I've been through my testimony to help them or, uh, do things that kind of slow down the process. I'm going to try to do that because, um, we need everybody from the rookies to the 10 year vets to make this thing work. So, um, more so I try to speak to what I know and, and really those honest conversations that I try to have with guys, what they know, I'm coming from a good place. And I think I'm not the type of guy where I'm just going to talk at them.
Like if they see something, like I could take a coaching point from Luke McCaffrey. I could take a coaching point from day on. If I'm from Jahan from, uh, Marcus from anybody, you know, like, I think that's what makes you a great player when you can really, uh, be coachable from anybody. And not take it from a personal standpoint. Hi. How are you doing? Good. I'm going back to what you were saying about Cliff and his friends. How is he as a teacher in teaching all this? Yeah, I mean, I think he does a really great job of making things simple, first and foremost. He doesn't overcoach. And I think that's the trust that he has in our group and his, and his coaches are position coaches to, um, fill in the details. So we'll have an install meeting and, um, it'll be a good amount of time. But then our position coaches will have time and we'll make it specific to that position. And so, um, then we'll come in and have a walkthrough. Um, and then after that, we'll have another walkthrough. And so I don't think there's been a time where I've come out here and I'm kind of worried about what I got. You know what I mean? And when you get into certain offices, there could be so many details where you could be overwhelmed.
And I think then it, the forces, it kind of separates guys in a sense that like one guy may study more than another guy. But when you have these, these sessions that we have where we're having an installs in the morning, we're having two walkthroughs, and then we're coming on the field and doing it. Like, I think you notice a lot of guys are playing a lot faster and more confident because he's keeping it simple. But also he's very particular in, in what he's expecting. But it's not a lot. So, um, there's not a pressure of to get it right. But at the same time, um, you know, it's expected of you and, and you know, you're going to have the tools given to you to be successful out there on the field. And this offseason, just the totality of change from front office players coaches, the turf field. Yeah. What, what has that been like for you just to see what's going on? It's been fun. Um, you know, I think from Mr. Harrison, the entire ownership group down to Adam Peters, down to DQ, down to Jada, who he drafted and bringing in Marcus and Jeff and all those guys.
And down to leaders, we have on our team. I think it was extremely specific on the way they tried to build this thing going into this year. Um, first having the right people, bringing in leaders, bringing in guys who love to compete. First thing that DQ said when he came here was, and his first meeting like, if you love to compete, this is going to be the place for you. And I love it. You know, I mean, I love bags and going at it with the DBs every day. Like the little mundane stuff can seem a little boring. But that's, I think that was the, the, where you make the gains during the off season, where you're really focused on, I'm, hey, like I'm a, I'm a give all I got for this day. And I'm a get better. And then I'm a, I'm a learn from the film and come back tomorrow and ready to do it again. And he also understands like the benefits of having breaks, like he's giving us breaks. We've had, you know, weeks off here and there that we can compose ourselves, but then come back and give it all we got. You know what I mean? And when you got a coach that understands the physicality of an entire season where you guys do need breaks by the same time we're going to get after it. It makes it fun as a leader because you can take that to your room and be like, yo, we got these, we got this week.
You know what I mean? That's extremely important. But you know, we have this little break coming up. Where you're going to get your, your mind and your body and your soul right. So coming into this season, I'm, I'm really optimistic of what we can be this year. And I think it started with the foundation that the ownership group and the entire staff has built. And now it's on myself as a leader to continue to hone that in into the locker room. But I think it's great because we have so many great leaders from all across the league who have won and we got Bobby Wagner in there. You know what I mean? I asked a hall of fame or so like, you know, being able to have kind of guys like that that you can lean on that can sometimes take over that leadership role where it doesn't fall on one person. I think it's extremely refreshing and knowing that everybody's on the same page and the message is the same allows you to go out there with confidence and always expected. Terri, you seem to spend many of your off seasons learning about things beyond football, hobbies, what have you, did you do anything to this off season so far?
To hobbies or increase your knowledge of this world around you? Uh, that's a good question. Play a lot of golf. That day just keeps my competitive juices flowing. Planning the wedding. That's going well. And, uh, I mean, I've just been grinding like, honestly, you know, I mean, I've been hungry this off season. Like, uh, I started working out, you know, pretty early and you start to see guys like coming back and it's just fun to like to be here and competing and feeling like everybody's on the same page, you know what I mean? Like, and so for me, I'm a grind every off season, but just this one just feels like it's the start of something, you know, new and special and the foundation of his extremely important to be a part of that to have a hand in that. Um, you know, it's, it's an honor, you know, and I put a lot of expectation on myself to come out here and be the guy that I know I'm capable of and also like taking the next step and being somebody that our quarterbacks that can trust and believe in.
So, um, this off season was pretty simple for me. Um, it was just really about, you know, working and grinding and getting better. He talked about Jaden before. If anything so far, I know we haven't seen everything, but in terms of his arm strength, the throws he's making anything surprising so far about the types of his ability in that regard. Definitely, uh, I think after the second or third crosser that he threw, I started telling the receivers like, hey, you gotta get your head around. You know, I mean, because again, each quarterback throws the ball differently and sees the field differently. Sometimes on crossers, a lot of quarterbacks may like to see you cross the ball and get into that open zone over there. If it's a man flattened off, they like to see you get open with him. He has a really good anticipation over the middle of the field where he can make those throws and give you a chance to catch and run. And he's really accountable too. Like we had a play today where he felt like he missed me and, you know, it's not a big deal at all. You know, I mean him and I could talk to those things and there's been a play that I've talked to him about. I could do a better job, but again, like that open that open form of communication from a rookie, I think is, is very rare.
And I think it speaks to the confidence he knows who he is, but he's also not afraid to say when he's wrong. And he knows he needs room to improve, but his touch on the deep balls is amazing. You know, I love getting extra reps with practice after practice with him. We're just catching the top end of a deep ball. That's big for me. You know, I mean, I get to track the ball over my shoulder and it's big for him to be able to get used to dropping the ball in the bucket. He just naturally has an ability to throw the ball. He sees the windows really well. And now he's just, you know, continue to get adjusted to the speed in the past rush. I think he's, these reps that he's getting are unbelievable during 11 or 11 because he's getting to feel pain and all in and DA and Cleveland Farrow. Like we got some dogs up there who are going to come after them. You know what I mean? And we got some great guys up front who are going to protect them. And so these reps, I feel like are even better than just 7 or 7. I think he could do in the sleep to be fair. Like he throws the ball really well. But when you get this 11 or 11, two-minute drill, you're putting them in game like situations. And I'm looking them in his eye. I'm like, we play a real ball now. Like we, we, we, we plan. You know what I mean?
And you just see no, no anxiousness in his game and his demeanor, which is extremely exciting. And then, you know, he's extremely light-hearted and he's always smiling. So he's joking with lime and D-line. He's just cool with everybody. And like I said, like for a rookie quarterback to come in like that where guys are gravitating to him. And he's not afraid to be who he is. That's dope. I think he has a bright future for himself. The tough losses, the tough seasons can weigh on a player. Sure. You're entering the prime of your career. J.A. kind of mentioned it last year. All he cares about is winning. He wants to win now. Is there a sense of urgency? You obviously always want to win. Yeah. Knowing that, you know, you're getting to the prime of your career. Like you want to win now. Yeah. I think that's a fair question. I think, you know, you start to evaluate when you, I'm in year six and you know how fast it goes. And I try not to put the cart before the horse, looking too far ahead. By the same time, you do want to win. You want to be a part of a winning culture and have a chance to win the Super Bowl and the playoffs and all those things.
That's why we do this personally. And I'm just excited with being a part of an organization in an environment where now like everybody's on the same page in the, in the, in the message is uniform. And it speaks from the top down. And it reflects the guys that they're bringing in. You know, all the guys that they brought in are guys who are hungry who are competitors who not only fighting for spots, but want to help us win games. And when you're around environment like that, like that, that makes you excited, makes you hopeful. And, you know, you don't know how it's going to turn out until we start playing games. But the foundation is extremely important. And I think this off season, we've really done a great job of building that they have. And then when a coach Quinn guy here building with this team. So I feel like we're going to be going into this off season really knowing what we all got to do individually to become ready for camp. The message is clear to come back to camp ready to compete and and be ready to win.
Appreciate you guys. Yeah, we should. One of the funniest guys on the team right now. We plan as much. So I just wanted to get like more experience under my belt. So I can know bring younger guys with me because I've been through a lot of it. One of those younger guys we're seeing it out here. It's the first time it's heard all of your lectures. What have you seen from low? Because I should have real forgot about it because he was heard. Now he's running, you know, almost a second man up behind you and tied. What have you seen? What was the workhorse? He go stay quiet. You go work hard. And that's all I love about him. He focuses. He don't really talk much. He's going to get a job done. Do a job right. Really has any mistakes? So what would be a successful season? A national championship. I ring when all the games we want to lose anything. We got a mindset that we can't be beat.
We just got to go show it. That mindset different. Seems like you guys expect a national championship every year. This year even more so you guys have all come back for this. You guys have all decided like enough is enough. Does that feel different? Or is there not really any difference? It's just the same work. It's definitely a difference. Everyone working harder. We noticed our last run. Most of us don't have any years after this. So we got to go bigger. Go home. We're not trying to go home. Finish big. We know what you guys think of Michigan. But when you look at what they did, they won the national championship. And you guys took them down to the final minute. You know what I mean? You were right there. Something goes a little different. You guys could have won that game against them. Does that tell you anything about like that? Hey, you guys want to win a national championship. But you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the national championship last year. Like you're that close. So I'm saying we just like work harder. That's kind of coach makes a saying, you know, nobody cares. Work harder like those, you know,
we'll play Georgia the same thing. Yeah. Last, last play. You know, they went on the win in 90. So we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season. I think we'll be fine. How frustrating is that? You're that close against the last two national title. Of course, it's frustrating. But you can't change the outcome. You can't really dwell on it. You just got to come back and work harder. Do things better than you did last year. And hopefully the outcome will change. Is that as you get older, you kind of learn. I thought that was working hard. And you always find out there's a little more. You could have been doing it. Yeah, definitely. I mean, that's what growing up is basically in college. I thought freshman year I was working. It's hard as I could, but not look back at it. I really wasn't working hard at all. Comparative what I'm doing now. So just like that, I'm going to be able to do it. I can't stay on it, it's hard at all. Comparative what I'm doing now. So just to learn anything. If the Stanford has a 16. Then they have to, like what do you need it to be? To be your best? Uh, 85. 80, 85. I mean, I can. It's all on me. I think it's a little higher. I was just trying to be funny, but.
I mean, it's all on me. I just got to run harder. Get the shape. But it's to the idea of potentially the 16 of 70. I think we're definitely gonna last. I was just, you know, we got to get the young guys to come along with us. We can't play for the Snaps again. That's just too much on our bodies. Just everybody like online D line. We got to get those younger guys to play, you know, get that pieces on the D line and the online and everywhere else. So we can last that long. Speaking of that, was that like playing that new Snaps again? Not sure if it was that one. I don't know if any of us were expected to be playing that next time. Ah, yeah, I did. Unless we were like winning by like a lot. I thought like there are no mom's you know I can go sit down or something. But we're playing them big games like, you know, Notre Dame too or North, those kind of games. Of course I want to be in because I know I can contribute and I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I can get the job done.
What stands out about Kaden McDonald? Is he got that you guys in a second? Oh yeah, definitely. K-Mac is a K-Mac's animal. You haven't really seen it yet, but in practice he shows all the time. He's just, he's growing right now. He has to work at the, he just has to get, you know, in the playbook and things like that. You guys are about the exact same size. Listen, you're both listening to 6-3, you're 3-27, he's 3-26. Yeah, he's very often. I kind of look at him like my junior, but you know K-Mac, he's going to be a great player. He's got to develop more in getting the playbook. It's really a lot on you, older guy. There's a large group of young guys and they make the seniors in the back as part of your cast for this year to bring those guys along as well. Yeah, definitely. We got to be leaders. Like I said, we got to have them play this year. We can't just play all the snaps. They got to get in there and get some work. And we got to get them right, earn all season so they can play. And not just play, they want to contribute, like, make plays, tackle, success. It seems like these guys get bigger.
Each one of the freshmen class is a bigger, bigger. And those guys kind of, those are going to kind of value themselves the person. Yeah, they're definitely some big dudes. And they all work hard. I've only seen much of something a day too when I'm passing on. But throughout the workouts, they've been working hard. You know, they're determined. I have to say that. And it looks like they're ready to work with me. I'm going to score this, though. It feels like there's a lot of great defense. That you have big athletic defense attackers who can eat up space. But also, you know, right? That is that. Is that an inquire maybe for great defense to have guys like you that have some balls, but also a great team? I think that is definitely. I think if you look at the last couple of national champions and winners, like team of Northean, they got two that, uh, detaco to athletic detacles. Look at Georgia. Two athletic detacles. So I think that's definitely neat if you want to go on that big run and beat those big teams. If you think about this, if there was a fight by the defense attack, it's like, what's Georgia?
Jordan Davis and Dan Carter. Let's miss again. It's Chris Jenkins. Tell us more questions. You know, this one is like how, I mean, you understand it because you play it, but I feel like some time. I don't know. Are people realizing how important defense tackles are a little bit more than they used to? I think so. I think they're starting to develop to develop more and more of these like freakiest detacles. Yeah. Like in the combine, just now, you see in like those guys, they're moving four to four, seven, eights and things like that. So we'll see. And when you think it, when you think about this freakish attack, how do you think you fit into that ball of that kind of player? You watch that and say, yeah, that's me. Yeah, definitely. I think I'm top notch when it comes to detacles, but I don't want to, you know, get a big head, but you know, watch it come on. I watch it through the drills. I have a tape here. You're like, look at my film. So I think I'm up there with all those lines. Do you become like a artist who comes to the batting up passes the way? When you're going to spring practice, you're not doing as much a weapon on 11 or 11.
Do you have like a gold one, mine? I don't remember how much I've lost you. You have a gold one, that's good. How many do you want to have little stuff? I mean, many is like, I have, I think I have more than that. But I think they're counseling. I think they're counseling some of them. And it's some of them where I like just listed. So, but I think we work on drills matching the hand. I think that's goes big. And what we do is a D line, you know, just affecting the quarter Vegas. Any way you can is just great for the defense. You know, just that little thing you cover in his eye. You know, he might throw it a little bit to the left to our player. So, so it's something that you really, really have to work on. You can do that. It's really, that's one of the things that you've maybe worked on the most. You can do it in your time here because there are a few guys that I've seen. Like, oh, that past few guys, we don't have to ask for this trial. We kind of kind of expected for the next one. I think I just have like a eye for the ball comment. I kind of just look at the quarterback and just, I see him like, load up. I just try to get in his way and sometimes he just throws it to me. I don't know. I'm here at the, you know, to be a high school quarterback.
I'm here at the back, I'm passing. I mean, they get frustrated by, you know, we're a team, you know, we're just getting back. I should lot of, a lot of different backs, man. They just learn to grow for them. You got to pick your top three backs and you have to go right now. One, two, three. I don't really have a top three, but I'll give you, I'll give you one. I would say, say, Juan Gibbs and I like McCaffrey. Auto, he was injured this year. I like McCaffrey. Best back in this draft. I lead out of the yard. That's y'all decision. Playing with Will Howard, what I'm going to remember most, we're a Howard man. He's just such a great lead, such a great leader, man. Like in moments where, you know, usually a lot of players they fold, man. He was just always calm and relaxed, man. And he just the leader that he was, man, that's one thing I'm going to remember about him.
Yeah, he's, he's going to be really good, man. He's on Coach Lock. I think he got the transfer in as well from West Virginia. Just that one, two punch with them both as well. They're going to be really good backs. And so James people's man, he's smart. The way that he goes about his business, man, he's mature. And so man, he's growing, you know, just as a person and as a player. And so man, yeah, definitely Ohio State, you know, that running back room is in great hands. Yeah, Coach Hartlan, man, he's full of energy, man. And he's creative as well, you know, I'm just learning from him as well. You know, I'm trying to run more outside the backfield. It was being able to learn from Coach Hartlan. And so he's definitely creative at what he does. And he brings a lot of energy to the team as well. And so I think they'll do really good. Just the intensity, man.
And since he got the playoffs, every game, man, is like the intensity got, you know, higher and higher. And so, you know, being able, I know in the lead, it's the same thing. Even if it's not the playoffs, just every game and the intensity keeps getting higher and higher. So, yeah, you just, I know you got to bring it, you know, each and every day and come in and work. Just like Ohio State, you know, I definitely feel like Ohio State. They definitely do a good job of preparing us for that. You know, I just remember even before going through this process, I'll talk to a lot of players before then. And they told me a lot of just about how much Ohio State prepared them, you know, for the NFL. And so, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I know I took a couple of days off after the national championship. And then, shoot, right after that, I'm writing sample Florida and I'm right to it. And so, yeah, I think while I trained, I trained at your morph performance. I think it's called the House of Athlete or the Compound now.
They did a good job, man. They're just bringing us in and the way they went about training us, man, they did a really good job. The bucket near, you know what I have? Temple, temple, nice. It's a nice city, man. Really nice. The 40 to broad and avert. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. No, man. It's really all about technique. And then it's just like, you know, you're going to have to do a lot of things. You're going to have to do a lot of things. Yeah. No, man.
And so, man, it's for the love of my brother's, though, man, making sure that the ball get in their hands, you know, the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed. You know, you had to hit the practice field later today. What is something you've been working on right now when you get to the game? In my game. You can't really work on this, you know, in all season, I feel like. It's more so, you know, you got to put the pads on. You got to go through some inside run, you know, maybe. I was really just continuing to run through tackles. And so, that's, I feel like that's one of the areas in my game. You know, I want to continue to get better. I feel like I did a good job of that in my senior year. And so, I just want to continue to build on that. So, you know what I was saying? Yes, I did. Yes, I did. So, people, try to look like, I'll let you bar out there. You get back in there and say, I'll be mad with you in the morning. I did. I did meet with New Orleans as well. I never got that comparison. Actually, I know I have a Camera shoe. Yep, man. I'll come back great back, man. Just what he does and those 101 matchups, he's dangerous, man. And he's so smooth.
He's so smooth as well. I'm not going to lie. He's smooth. Yeah. Inside zone from stack, being able to hit that thing downhill. And I'll say the next one is probably just an option out of the backfield. You know, a man in man coverage, you're getting on that line backer. And so. You know, I say the man, the biggest thing is the way that he carries himself, man. And the way that man, he approaches the game. He comes in with the mindset, you know, he's going to work every single week. You know, every practice, you know, he's working hard. You know, even shoot, I don't know, every good, I think he had it. Every game was a good game for him, man. And so but still man, he always has the mentality to mindset that, you know, he's going to come in each and every day. He's going to continue to work and get better, man.
And so he's definitely man. He's going to be a special player, man. He really is. You know, I started in, you know, some entries. I know his match was in, when he looked back on it, what, what, what, the stamp down. And so being able to lean on him, you know, he gives you, in those moments, where it's tough. You know, where it's slow. And when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about, he gives you that peace and comfort. You know, even in those moments, man, where it's so hard that you can't, you can't explain. It's like, man, I'm going through this, but like, how am I still filled with this internal joy?
You know, how do I have so much peace in this situation? And so that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you. And so. So. The back of the front of the minutes of power and judges, you know, affects us. Which aspect could be to those other individuals that you run to, probably, or can be around power and... Um, man, those guys have such a great mentality, man. Am I just really loved their mentality, especially Q as well. You know, I talked about Will Howard, his leadership, but Quenchon mentality, man. That boy just, yeah, that boy just gifted, you know, you see, you know, sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like, you know, he should have a negative five yards. And as soon as you know it, you know, he, that running through somebody, stiff arm and somebody, and shoot, it's a game to 10. And so. You some of the things that he does, he just realizes two different guys. Yeah. Shoot, I think. Yeah, man, I think it just like, he's just gifted, man, to be honest.
He's just gifted, you know, he's, he's a big back, you know, he's strong. And so, you know, he's, he's able to do, he's able to do those things. And so, yeah, man, it's definitely, you know, I look at his game and I want to, you know, at the same time, I want to learn from Quenchon. You know, I want to look at his game and it's like, man, where, where can I get better at as well? You know, that's the type of player I am. I'm always looking to get better, man. I'm always looking to grow as a player. What's your last one to be? Druel and San. Oh, yeah, he's going to be a great, but he's going to be a great quarterback, man. He's so, so accurate. And so, he's definitely, man, I know Coach Dez is definitely going to get him right. Just, you know, continuing to grow as a leader, continuing to grow as a player. And so, he's going to be really good for how I stay. Thanks, guys. Good job. I know just the quarterback position. I feel like, you know, the quarterbacks in the past, they've, they've definitely been vocal. And so, I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to ask of Julian San as well. It's to be that vocal leader and lead the, and lead the offense and lead the team. Thanks, guys. Thanks, guys. Thanks, guys. Thanks, guys. Sure, man.
He has, he has a build like JK Dobbins. And I kind of see them, you know, similar, similarities in their game as well. And I know JK Dobbins, he was a great running back. I feel like he's not talked about his none. A lot, but man, his career here, you watch his highlights is great. I remember before I recruit, before I committed here, I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights, every, every one of his years here, like four or five times. And so, man, he was such a great back. And I feel like, you know, when I see JK Dobbins, when I see James people, I see similarities to both of their games. I feel like they play the same. And so, appreciate you all, you have to go. Can you get back? This. Thank you.
Well I got coming in last round in a row so I just attacked every day really the same way. It's technically a band very rough. Physically, how different are you? Weight wise, body wise, all that from your group? I think I got a lot bigger. I'm like 240. You know, like 244 right now. Last year, I played it like 236 to 37. What does it feel like at 244? Or maybe almost a different machine out there? Yeah, like a... What does it feel like to be running around out there? Like you are, but with more, more bands. I just feel like I'm like, like, more downhill, like stronger, like I'm taking all the blocks better. It's a big, no. You see, don't think, maybe that's not the correct term,
but to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year. And you played quite a bit last year instead. What do you have to get straight in your head about being on the field that much more? I just got to get ready to just play 30 more snaps. So... But are you... How would you describe how much you're looking forward to it from an 8-statement? Yeah, I'm looking forward to it. I'm ready for it. My pen, I'm ready for it. The text is open, it's a rematch. So it's... But it's not really two different teams compared to the ones I'm going to play and stuff. But how is that enhanced this camp for you and this team getting ready for an opener of that magnitude? Yeah, with an opener like that, we've been emphasizing it a lot. We know we got coming, so we know we got to do... We've been prepared for it. Already this is probably what today's player has to play. I think Riley ready to play right now. He advanced freshmen, like he ended up here in the book. He studied in like he advanced. And his measurements were crazy. He saw it like the saw it like to him. Or you said you're ready, right? You know you're ready.
What was that process like during last season? Could you feel yourself becoming more and more ready? So whatever the team needed for you? Yeah, because that's pretty much what my role was. Just whenever I was needed, I had to step up. So I feel like that's what built me into me being able to say I'm ready for this year. When you say ready, is it more a physical thing? Is it a mental thing? When I say ready, I think it's pretty much like everything physically, mentally, mostly. I think I'm there. A different is that feeling it's your bandwagon. That's the most possible thing to do that. I asked a one more time. How different is that responsibility? That's the reason that you should be emotional. All that. If you want to ask me, do you know you were a home player? I feel like it's a way bigger responsibility with me having to step up this year. But I kind of go about it the same way. Like last year, I was intentional with everything I did. I feel like this year is going to be the same thing. It's probably a little bit more. For somebody who's some reason that you're still
a little bit too much. And what work? How's everybody working? I say, scrawling. I say, when you think of me, you would think of like a bullet, like a silver bullet. I don't really a bullet. I'm always on the ball. That's how I like to play and think. What's your nickname? No, I ain't got to be my nickname, but. So I'm saying that the nickname to be, that's all. Oh, yeah, yeah. You want to be my name? Yeah, that's it. I've always said. I've got more questions for Patricia's style and how it's free. I mean, how does that fit you? And what are you going to show me about the bullying and that kind of stuff? I think it fit me because I don't know. I just like the defense. I feel like we got, like you said, we got a lot of freedom. And we're moving around a lot of the times. Just like, no, I don't know. I don't really not answer that. That's OK. You could go on your instincts a little bit more, maybe. And it's not so thinking of too much.
I don't even know if I say that because there's a lot of thinking going on. But it's like, I just like it's defense. I like how Patricia's defense. I like what you got going on. What was it sad when CJ left the ring? Yeah. Now, I wanted to much sad. I was kind of like happy for him. Yeah, that's what you want. Don't miss him in that. No. No. All right. No, that's my dog. I go. So yeah, kind of missing a little bit. But yeah, I'm happy for him though. I don't think, go ahead. One last question. Coach Daze talked a lot about the guys who played some last year, but maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for that wasn't maybe your national championship you guys have been in your own. How much do you feel that is a guy who certainly contributed last year, but will be in this bigger role and along some of your classmates? Yeah, I do feel like I did win a national, but like you said, my role wasn't the same as how's going to be this year. So yeah, I definitely want to go get another one. Experience that feeling with me be on the field, a lot more place. That's it. Oh, Bill, thank you very much.
So I do have a lot of leaders on the D-line and at the D-in position. So we kind of all just count off the children and those. It's been a tough time for me to be able to work with the guys. Playing with them all. We're all in the field. And just kind of getting to know each other. And trying to get this to be like, so you need to get these guys out of that position. So competitive. We love it. We're all competitive people. We all love to push each other. And that's really the thing in the best side of all. I feel like we're all just bouncing off each other and seeing what one person does. And we kind of build it into our toolbox. And we all kind of just build one great thing. Hey, do you remember last year when you got the shot at the full-back in the world? And did they approach you with that idea and you could still remember how to get come up out? Because you're a geogelgex on your floppy. OK. You can touch that. So I definitely did it in high school. I was pulled back and a little bit of tidying. So I feel like they kind of saw what I could do there. And Coach Wilson, obviously, he left Washington too, where he left. And I feel like you playing that seed in Coach Day's head.
And Coach Day kind of just went for it. And I tried to do the best I could to do it. Does that continue right now? I don't know. Do you need anything to scream? New playbook. I did not know you. I've got that far. Do you need a good thing? How tall% do you think? Do you look attractive? I like to think myself as a football player. I can really play any position on the field. You need me to just give me a weaker two to learn it and kind of perfect it and try to do my best for you. Kit Jack, you the same thing. Oh, yeah. Don't watch. Graphically, that's why. I was talking to Coach Johnson on Tuesday about some of the conversations and sort of saw you and found out some conversations after JT and Jack decided to come back. Just got to win into those, respected, and how did that help you maybe get the right mindset, I guess, from the beginning. Definitely kind of seeing it all the way through. I feel like people kind of just see what happened. And they don't know everything that goes into it, how long the season is now, what you got to do, to prepare for, and what to happen in all that time from here to to this. So I feel like we definitely just coached in me,
kind of connected, and we kind of just talked man-to-man, and he kind of just sat straight to me. And I feel like we kind of both had a good time on it. And we know we were making it together. We're making each other better every day. We got the four best DNs, five best DNs, honestly. And we're college football, and we're going to be one of the best D-Rimes in college football. I feel like the better player today than you were in the season. I feel like I've taken big steps in my roles of just being responsible and being more of a leader, and kind of stepping up and taking a step to kind of get out there more on the team, and kind of bring people in, and I feel like I'm kind of helping out more. How do you record in when the past season of TKFC? Is that sound? I mean, it sounds bizarre, but I mean, the season goes by so fast already. So when you're kind of like week 10 in, like, wow, it's already week 10. So now it's kind of, gives you more time to kind of enjoy it, and kind of savor it, because you've come already in here for a feeling of freshness, freshness, freshness, crazy. But you don't want to spend on your powder in the first month or a year, right?
Oh, yeah. Is that not pace yourself, yeah? I mean, there is a mindset, man. I didn't know the season. Yeah, definitely. You're definitely going to have to have the mental stability to handle all those weeks and all those practices. How much is Larry talking, guys, Ralland? Last question right here. You know, the 2016, 2017, 4 NFL D-French and Ralland, so much. Does he talk to that guy? I mean, he hasn't had to talk about it. We know about it. You've seen it every day. We watched the film. We see them all working together. We know what it could be. We know what it could become. So we know we're right at the same, we're at the right place at the right time. And God wanted us to be here. And He knew we wanted us all to come together and kind of play together and be able to bounce off and just perfect our craft together. And I feel like we all are just great individuals. And we come together, it's something special. We plan as much. So I just wanted to get more experience under my belt. So I can bring younger guys with me because I think it would be a lot better. One of those younger guys, we're seeing it out there. It's the first time I've heard all your lectures. What have you seen from Lillie? Because I don't know. I actually don't really know what I've got about it. Because he's heard it and how he's run it.
He's almost a second man out behind you. And tied. What have you seen in Lillie? Well, as a workhorse, he goes, stay quiet. You go work hard. And that's all I love about him. He focuses. He don't really talk much. He's going to do the job done, do a job right. He really has any mistakes. So what would be a successful season? A national championship? A ring. When all the games we want to lose anything, we got a mindset that we can't be beat. And we just got to go show it. I'm saying, that mindset different. Seems like you guys expect a national championship every year. This year, even more so, you guys have all come back for this. You guys have all decided, like, the numbers are not. Is it a good feeling difference? Or is it not really any difference? It's just the same word. It's definitely a difference. Everyone working harder. We noticed our last run. Most of us don't have any years after this. So we got to go bigger, go home, then. We're not trying to go home. So it's finished big. We know what you guys think of Michigan. But when you look at what they did, they won the national championship.
And you guys took them down to the final minute, right? You know what I mean? I mean, you were right there. Something goes a little different. You guys could have won that game against them. Does that tell you anything about, like, that, hey, you guys won a national championship, but you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the national championship last year, like you're that close? So I'm saying, we just work harder. That's kind of coach makes a saying, you know, nobody cares, just work harder. Like, those, you know, when we played Georgia, it's the same thing. Last play, you know, they went on the win in 90. So we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season. I think we'll be fine. How frustrating is that? You're that close against the last two national titles. Of course, as you know, it's frustrating, but you can't change the outcome. You can't really dwell on it. You just got to, you know, come back and work harder, do things better than you did last year. And hopefully the outcome will change. Is that as you get older, you kind of learn. I thought that was working hard, but then you always find out there's a little more than you could have been doing?
Yeah, definitely. I mean, that's how that's what growing up is basically in college. I thought, first of all, I was working as hard as I could, but now I look back at it. I really wasn't working hard at all compared to what I'm doing now. So just to learn anything. But for Stanley, there's a 16. Then the answer to what is what do you need it to be to be your best? Uh, 80, 85. I mean, I can, it's all on me. I just, I think it's a little higher. I was just trying to be funny, but I mean, it's all on me. I just got to run harder in shape. So I just stand up to you. You got to hide it. It's going to play. The idea of a potential to stick to the civil rights. I have about that idea that's making it a little bit about can you last that long? Do you have worries? I'm just going to write that. I think I can tell that I've been there. I think I definitely can lie. So I was just, you know, we got to get the young guys to come along with us. We can't play 50 snaps again. That's just too much on our bodies. Just everybody like online, D line. We got to get those younger guys to play, you know,
get that pieces on the D line and the online and everywhere else. So we can last that long. Speaking of life, if you like playing that means after that, not to your development. I don't know if any of us were really expected to be for that next time. Ah, yeah, I did. Unless we were like winning by like a lot. I thought like, there are no moments, you know, I can go sit down or something. But we're playing them big games like, you know, Notre Dame, too, or North, those kind of games. Of course, I wouldn't be because I know I can contribute. And I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I can get the job done. Well, it stands out about Taden McDonald. He got it. You guys in a second. Oh, yeah, definitely. K Mac is a K Mac animal. Y'all you haven't really seen it yet, but in practice, he shows all the time. He's just, he's grown right now. He has to work at the, he just has to get, you know, in the playbook and things like that. You guys are about the exact same size. Listen, you're both listening to six three, you're three 27. He's three 26. Yeah, I kind of look at him like my junior, but you know, K Mac, he's going to be a great player. He's got to develop more in getting the playbook.
It's really a lot on you older guys. There's that large group of young guys and there's the seniors in the back. Is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys? Yeah, definitely. We got to be leaders. Like I said, we got to have them play this year. We can't just play all the snaps. They got to get in there and get some work. And we got to get them right during the all season. So they can play and not just play. They want to like contribute, like, make plays tackle a sex. It seems like these guys get bigger. Each one of the first time in class is a bigger player. Do those guys kind of, it doesn't kind of allow you to solve the first. Yeah, they definitely some big dudes. And they all work hard. I've only seen much of some day too when I'm passing on, but throughout the workouts, they've been working hard, you know, they're determined. I can see that. And it looks like they're ready to work with me. How important this note feels like. There's a lot of great defenses that you have big, athletic defensive tactics. You can eat up space, but also move, you know, right?
That is that is that an inquire maybe for great defense? To have guys like you that have some faults, but also a great feeling. I think that is definitely. I think if you look at the last couple in the last match, I think when there's like, see my North, they didn't know they got two good, detacled two athletic detacles. Look at Georgia two athletic detacles. I think that's definitely neat if you want to go on a big run and beat those big teams. If you think about this, if they want to fight by the defense tactics, like what's Georgia, Jordan Davis and Janet Carter? What's Michigan is? Chris Jenkins. Couple more questions. What is how? I mean, you understand this is your play. But I feel like sometimes I don't know, but people realizing how important defense tackles are. A little bit more than they used to. I think so. I think they're starting to develop more and more of these like freakiest detacles. Like in the combine, just now, you see in like those guys, they're moving four to four, seven, eights and things like that. So we'll see. And when you think about this freakish attack,
how do you think you fit into that all of that kind of player? You watch that and say, yeah, that's me. Yeah, definitely. I think I'm top notch when it comes to detacles, but I don't want to, you know, get a big head, but you know, watch the come on. I watch the doodoo drills. I have tape here. You can look at my, my film. So I think I'm up there all the time. So Tyler, can you become like a artist and then come to the band of passes? The figure wags can't be claimed. I mean, you're going to spring practice. You're not doing as much a weapon of a weapon. That's gross. How do you work on that? Do you have like a goal? I don't remember how much you have left. You have a goal in mind. How many do you want to have? I mean, as many as I can have, I think I have more than that. But I think he said it. I think they didn't count some of them. And it's some of them where I just missed it. So, but I think we work on Joe's matching the hand. I think that's, uh, goes big. And, uh, what we do is a D line, you know, just affecting the quarter of the against anywhere you can. It's just great for the defense. You know, just that little thing you covered is I, you know, he might throw it a little bit to the left
to our player. So it's something that you really really have to work on. You know, that's one of the things that you've maybe worked on the most. You could bring your time here because there are a few guys that I've seen. Like, oh, that passed through. We don't have that. We don't have that. It's kind of, kind of, kind of expected for the people. I think I just have like a, like, a eye for the ball, kind of, I kind of just look at the quarterback and just, I see him like load up. I just try to get in his ways. And sometimes he just throws it to me. I'm irritated if you want to be a high state quarterback. It's not going to be a bad down pass. I mean, they get frustrated, but you know, we're a team, you know, we're just getting better. I watch a lot of, a lot of different backs, man. They just learn to grow for them. You got to pick your top three backs. You got to go right now. One, two, three. Uh, I don't really have a top three, but I'll give you, I'll give you one. I would say, say, Juan Gibbs and I like McCaffrey.
Auto, he was injured this year. I like McCaffrey. I appreciate it. Who's the best backer? Best back in this drive. I lead out of the yard. That's y'all, that's y'all decision. What do you know about how you play with your player? Playing with Will Howard. What I'm going to remember most. We're a Howard, man. He's just such a great lead, such a great leader, man. It's just like in moments where, you know, usually a lot of players they fold, man, he was just always calm and relaxed, man. He just the leader that he was, man, that's one thing I'm going to remember about him. What do you think of James P? Yeah, he's, he's going to be really good, man. He's on Coastal Lark. I think he got the transfer in as well from West Virginia. And just that one, two punch with them both as well. They're going to be really good backs. And so James P. was, man, he's smart the way that he goes about his business, man. He's mature. And so man, he's growing, you know, just as a person and as a player. And so man, yeah, definitely Ohio State, you know, that running back room is in great hands.
Yeah, coach, coach, hard line, man. He's full of energy, man. And he's creative as well, you know, just learning from him as well, you know, trying to run more outside the backfield was being able to learn from coach hard line. And so he's definitely creative at what he does. And he brings a lot of energy to the team as well. And so I think that would do really good. So I'm just waiting for the playoffs on the right. That's what we want to do. Just intensity, man, then, intensity of the playoffs, every game, man, it's like the intensity got, you know, higher and higher. And so, you know, being able, I know in the lead, it's the same thing. Even if it's not the playoffs, just every, every game and intensity, it keeps getting higher and higher. And so, yeah, you just, I know you got to bring it, you know, each and every day and come in and work just like Ohio State. You know, I definitely feel like Ohio State. They definitely do a good job of preparing us for that. You know, I just remember even before going through this process, I'll talk to a lot of players before then and they told me a lot of just about how much Ohio State prepared them, you
know, for the NFL. And so, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I know I took a couple of days off after the National Championship and then shoot right after that. I'm writing sample Florida and I'm right to it. And so, yeah, I think where I trained, I trained at your morph performance. I think it's called the House of Athlete or the Compound now. They did a good job, man. They're just bringing us in and the way they went about training us, man, they did a really good job. I mean, that would be cool. The bucket near, no, I haven't. Tampa, Tampa, nice. This is nice. This is a nice city, man. Really nice. The 40 to broad and avert. Yeah. Yeah. No, man. It's really all about technique and then it's about mindset as well. And so, I say, you know, it's for the love of my brother.
It's for the love of Will Howard. It's for the love of the receiver. So, I got on the perimeter just making sure, you know, first of all, my quarterback doesn't get sacked. And I told Will, I think it was before the first game. I was like, I got your brother. It's, I said, man, I'm not going to let you get hit, you know, and so I don't know if, I don't know if I gave up a sack. I'm not sure that, but I know if I did, I haven't given up too many. And so, man, it's for the love of my brother's, though, man, making sure that the ball get in their hands, you know, the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed. And then I said, man, I'm not going to let you get in my game. You can't really work on this, you know, in all season, I feel like it's more so, you know, you got to put the pads on, you got to go through some inside run, you know, maybe it's really just continuing to run through tackles. And so, that's, I feel like that's one of the areas in my game, you know, I want to continue to get better, right? I feel like I did a good job of that my senior year. And so, I just want to continue to build on that. So, you get that place? Yes, I did. Yes, I did.
I didn't mean to look like I'm going to be in the middle of the world. I did mean with New Orleans as well. I never got that comparison, actually. I know I have a Camera shoe, yeah, man, I have a Camera great back, man, just what he does and those 101 matchups, he's dangerous, man, and he's so smooth, he's so smooth as well, I'm not going to lie, he's smooth. Yeah, inside zone from stack, being able to hit that thing downhill. And I'll say the next one is probably just an option out of the backfield, you know, a man and man coverage, you're getting on that linebacker and so. Yeah, I say to man, the biggest thing is the way that he carries himself, man, and the
way that man, he approaches the game, he comes in with the mindset, you know, he's going to work every single week, you know, every practice, you know, he's working hard, you know, even shoot, I don't know, every good, I mean, he had a, every game was a good game for him, man, and so, but still, man, he always has the mentality to mindset that, you know, he's going to come in each and every day, he's going to continue to work and get better, man, and so he's definitely, man, he's going to be a special player, man, he really is. Man, a lot of ups and downs, man, it's just how you respond to adversity, and I feel like that's something that God has definitely helped me to do better, is this, I'm not having something to lean on now, you know, I remember before I met him, you know, going through those adversity, I had nothing to run to, you know, you can run to people, but they still can't, it's not too much, they can't truly help you, you know, I feel like, you know, I feel like the only person that can truly help you is your relationship with Jesus Christ, and so being able to lean on him, you know, he gives you, in those moments
where it's tough, you know, where it's low, and when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about, he gives you that peace and comfort, you know, even in those moments, man, where it's so hard that you can't explain, it's like, man, I'm going through this, but like, how am I still filled with this internal joy, you know, how do I have so much peace in this situation, and so that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you, and so... The back of the firm, he has the power of judgment, which aspect, the future of those other individuals that you run to, and from being around power to God? Man, those guys have such a great mentality, man. Am I just really loved their mentality, especially Q as well, you know, I talked about Will Howard, his leadership, but Quen Shaw, I'm in Tallahdee, man, that boy just gifted, you know, you see, you know, sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like, you know, he should have a negative five yards, and as soon as you know it, you know, he, that
running through somebody, still forming somebody, and she would just gain a 10. It's a... Yeah, man, I think it's just like, he's just gifted, man, too, beyond it. He's just gifted, you know, he's a big back, you know, he's strong, and so, you know, he's able to do those things, and so, yeah, man, it's definitely, you know, I look at his game, and I want to, you know, at the same time, I want to learn from Quen Shawd, you know, I want to look at his game, and it's like, man, where can I get better at as well? You know, that's the type of player I am. I'm always looking to get better, man, I'm always looking to grow as a player. What's your last two to three to say? Julian Sand. Oh, yeah, he's going to be a great, but he's going to be a great quarterback, man. He's so, so accurate, and so, he's definitely, man, I know Coach Dez is definitely going to get him right, just, you know, continuing to grow as a leader, continuing to grow as a player, and so he's going to be really good for high state. He's, I know just the quarterback position. I feel like, you know, the quarterbacks in the past, they've definitely been vocal, and
so I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to ask Julian Sand as well. It's to be that vocal leader and lead the offense and lead the team. Yeah, he has a build like JK Dobbins, and I kind of see them, you know, similar, similarities in their game as well, and I know JK Dobbins, he was a great running back. I feel like he's not talked about his, no, a lot, but man, his career here, you watch his highlights is great. I remember before I recruit, before I committed here, I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights, like every, every one of his years here, like four or five times, and so, man, he was such a great back. And I feel like, you know, when I see JK Dobbins, when I see James people, I see similarities to both of their games, I feel like they play the same. So, appreciate you all. Yeah, we're going.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. I just feel like I'm like, like, like more downhill, like stronger, like I'm taking all blocks better. It's a big. Yeah. You said, don't think, maybe that's not the correct term, but to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year, and you played quite a bit last year, instead of what you have to get straight in your head about being on the field that much more. It's just gotta get ready to just play 30 more snaps. So, how would you describe how much you're looking forward to it from an 8-10 point. Yeah, I'm looking forward to it. I'm ready for it. I'm ready for it. The Texas opener is a rematch in the service. But it's not really two different teams compared to the ones that we all played. How is that enhanced this camp for you and this team getting ready for the where an opener of that magnitude? Yeah, with an opener like that, we've been emphasizing it a lot. We know we got coming, so we know we got to do it. We've been preparing for it. Already just broadly with it.
Yeah, I have to play right now. I think Riley ready to play right now. He advanced freshman, like he in the here in the book, he stood in like he advanced and his measurements was crazy. Like he saw like a saw line too. Orbel, you said you're ready. Like you said you're ready. What was that process like during last season? Did you feel yourself becoming more and more ready? So what was the team needed? Yeah, because that's pretty much what my role was. Just whenever I was needed, I had to step up. So I feel like that's what built me into me being able to say I'm ready for this year. When you say ready, is it more a physical thing? Is it a mental thing? When I say ready, I think it's pretty much like everything physically, mentally, mostly. I think I'm there. I feel like it's a way bigger responsibility with me having to step up this year, but I
kind of go about it the same way. Like last year, I was intentional with everything I did. I feel like this year is going to be the same thing. It's probably a little bit more. It won't work? How's everybody working? I say, scrawling, when you think of me, you think of like a bullet, like a silver bullet. I don't really know bullet. I'm always on the ball. That's how I like to play and think. I don't think that's what you really want to embody that. I ain't got to be my nickname, but I'm saying that the nickname can be that's what I'm saying. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, it's like. I've got a couple of questions for Patricia's style and how it's free. I mean, how does that fit the team? And what are you into doing about playing in that kind of second? I think it fit me because I just like the defense. I feel like we got, like you said, we got a lot of freedom and we're moving around a lot.
A lot of the times is like, no, I don't know. I don't really not answer that. That's okay. You could go on your instincts a little bit more, maybe. That's not so thinking of too much. I don't even know if I say that because there's a lot of thinking going on, but it's like, I just like it's deep. I like her pretty deep because I like what you got going on. What was it, Sadwin? CJ left the right track. No, I wanted to say that. I was kind of like happy for you. Yeah. That's what you want. No. All right. No, that's my dog. I don't see it. Kind of missing a little bit, but I'm happy for you. Well, don't think, go ahead one last bit. Coach Daze talked a lot about the guys who played some last year, but maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for that wasn't maybe your national championship you guys have been winning your own. How much do you feel that is a guy who certainly contributed last year, but will be in this bigger role and along with some of your classmates? Yeah, I do feel like, um, yeah, I do feel like I did win a national, but like you said,
my role wasn't the same as how's going to be this year. So yeah, I definitely want to go get another one experienced that like feeling maybe on the field, a lot more place. Great. Oh, Bill, thank you very much. I'm so happy. The championship in New York, and you know, before and everything like that, and also to get your teeth knocked in, you know, first game and you can't have that happen because I don't really just mean anything. And so just the concept mindset to continually get better is, but on the forefront of my mind and forefront of anyone here, you can ask. Yeah. Yeah, I know we look at the class sets every now and then I'm like, oh man, they're gone. They're gone. No, it's been, it's been good. I mean, the guys who are still here have definitely kind of bonded together pretty good. Yeah, I mean, you know, Mark came in the other day is like in that class, 21 best class
ever. Yeah, sure. You know, I can't really even, you know, just sitting to that, you know, not much left, but, yeah, I mean, to do what we can and do what we can for this team has been really important for all of us. And I think us now realizing where the veterans, you know, where the old guys now in the group has been kind of strange, at least to begin with, you know, because you go from all those guys, you like Donnie and Josh and those guys and all of sudden, it's Sunday. We have a team meeting after the, like the celebration, the shoe and all of a sudden, the next day, there's gone. And, you know, it's just very different. So I think us being able to step up as, you know, leaders and as as vets to help bring out, you know, along the team, our units and this program has been really important. Just to try. Yeah. Somebody who went through that, what have you been impressed by with Jake? No, it could spend doing really well.
I mean, I could go and he goes to work. He's extremely athletic, extremely flexible. You know, he's a young kid, obviously. He's a lot of development, a lot of, he's a little adversity at all of us do. But I think he's going through that right now, but he's been coming out on the better end of it so far and excited to see what he can do because he's very impressive at this young stage. So I steer over all level of excitement just to be back with the rest of this year off of the blind group that you guys have in so much experience back then. I'm really excited. I mean, trying to just build that culture back up again, you know, like what we had last year. I'm trying to do a little stuff here and there and I can know I think we're going to Ray Ray's barbecue. I think tomorrow. So shout out Ray Ray's. But, but yeah, just trying to get that brotherhood back, get that, you know, that oblock spirit back. Sure, it's coming soon. Hopefully.
But just to kind of get those, not those same faces, but those same kind of mindsets back and our group is important right now. And it's been fun to meet new guys from different backgrounds and stuff like that and try to figure out how to build that and mend that together. It's been pretty cool. Now, as you are one of the most experienced veterans on this team, how much do you feel like you have to be a leader for the students here? Yeah, for sure. That comes, it's obviously I don't think it's natural to anyone to immediately step up and that's something I've been working on every day and talking to God about. But I have to understand that and that's something I want to continue to work on. I want to be able to be a guy that people can fall back on and like coach, just saying before like we're going to have highs in those, but the great players, the ones being set our clocks to and I kind of want as my goal is to be one of those people that you can do that. And I think for especially a very new set of eyes in the Woody, not only coaches but
players, I think it's very important to kind of keep that steady mindset. And I think for me, learning how to be a leader has been important just to not be too hard on myself, but also not let myself kind of slack off in some departments to try to keep steady. Just your story itself, though, is testament of what it means to like for perseverance and stuff, too, though. Right. You don't have to stand up from somebody to say that, right? I mean, just what do you think you've shown more than anything else in every card? Yeah, I mean, I've been blessed. I've been blessed with a lot of adversity. I think that's definitely maybe better on the back end. Coach, Coach Day always talks about it and you don't, great leaders aren't, they can show it, but a lot of people can show it. A lot of people can just talk about it, but to be about it is important. And I think to me, now I've went through a lot of that adversity. I went through a lot of that stuff and my testament has been written in an interesting way.
But I think for me to take that next step is really important for not only for this team, but for myself personally. You want to give a few questions to Jason? Yeah, he's been doing great. I mean, he came in big, freaking strong. He's fun to be in the weight room with. He's kind of quiet. That gets kind of my first impression on, but he's actually pretty funny, dude. He and his dad come over and they kind of joke around. So he's been doing a great job. I can't talk. He's been doing a great job for his size. He has like freaky athletic feet. Like I watch him do the ladders and that's a lot of massive of around on those things, you know, doing a little itch shuffle, but I mean, he was killing it. And so he's been doing a great job. I can't wait to see how it kind of continues to develop throughout this summer and throughout this fall camp. Yeah, I think that's why I'm not that good. What did Austin do? That's why. Yeah, Piggy's been doing great. I mean, he stepped up. Piggy, yeah, everyone refers to him as Piggy. He's his username one time. Nice. Everyone's Piggy. Anyway, Pig's been doing great.
He's been able to step up and kind of bring around along those younger guys. You know, everyone's kind of trying to figure out their new roles. And I think he's been a big body guy that he can't survive. He can run between the Talkers. His feet are quicker than what you think for a big guy. Yeah, really good feet. We get balanced so that's what makes him good. That's what I saw. Is that a comment for a bigger back? Like, in the title, is it a possibility? No, I don't think so. It's probably a good way for me. Brandback's in the title. Well, title and background. I don't know many with that type of background, but he's a high school. They try to play as an H-back. Well, really good play. When you look in the portal for running back, actually, we want to try to recruit you. Does it matter to you if you have two different styles of running back to me? One guy can do certain things better. One guy can do certain things better. Or is it, you'll just say the best running back to you from the fight? Do you want to have different styles? Yeah, I want different styles. I'm going to try to take the same thing. We're going to take the same thing. We're going to take guys with different skills.
Whether they're big guys, small guys, past catchers, in between the Talker runners. I don't want to take the same thing. I want different backs. You guys know, Bill and Plinch are a lot of better. I'm sure Red Zone is scoring. You guys are doing it. Is it important to find the back of the match the size of the CK has to be the best? No, I have my own opinion on the size they've been in the company. The race ahead is Orange James out of order. He's my red zone running show. I'm going to play Orange James in freshman. In probably way, the 2, 10, or 12 fight. Which is not very big. But then he got the Nadeau again. Some guys got a nose sticking down his own. And he played with a lot of aggression down here running. That could be CJ, that could be James. Or it could be the freshman of OJ. It's just who has a nose for giving his own. That's who I'm going to go with. You don't have to be 62.
No, just because you're being there, I'm going to make a top. I'm going to get, obviously, you know, freshman running back to him and then the bow and I say, here. But what do you need to see from a freshman to feel comfortable with that playing? In the first day, you were there on the ball. What they do, they're no small detail. Take care of the ball. The second day, you will be, how good they are in the past. Because it's the hardest thing for high school back. Because they're not really here in high school. But you have to understand the past. But all that falls on me. So like I said, I'm the main person in my heart. So that's why I need to see first and everything just. I will understand to be. So I can go get in there. Do you feel comfortable with bow and I say, where they're at or at least, you know, where their time lies. Yeah, I think they've been fine. Like I said, I tell all the young guys, he's a marathon. The first day, the first you've been in the arm, the spot on the special teams. You know, you earn a spot on the special teams. Then you earn the right to be a buck out.
So they get out there on the field. So I think they're training the right. The first practice, like it wasn't there. So the build off was getting stuff to work on. Yeah, yeah. Long day. I've seen some of the younger guys in your room develop. I think about like Etrick Houston is coming in this year, seeing him working with you guys. Joshua would make it and sound like he'd come in. I feel like they're definitely picking up quick. I mean, I was in their shoes one time and I had Zach Harrison, Javonte, and Tyler Friedell in front of me. So I feel like I'm just trying to be one of those peers that they work for me. And kind of just giving them the steps to get there. And I feel like they're definitely picking up quick. And they're definitely going to be one of the great rushmen. So they go to Joshua's side as well. JT and Zach probably have made their ton of build experience. So you have some opportunities for me to do a lot of things.
Is there a difference in the work going to be getting through Apple Jam pretty much the last couple? I feel like all the camps I've definitely gotten a big course learned. And I love that. So I asked Coach J4, I love getting more reps because I just like protecting my craft. So I mean, some people may not need it. Some people need it, but I mean, it's like you as me. I don't know if it's deep on that course that I'm working on right now. I mean, for me, it's always just kind of getting my little details perfectly, like my steps, my footing, kind of just affecting my toolbox, what we call it, my craft, and just trying to be a, it's like whenever you play, so it's what kind of does. What are you two trying to do? You're two trying to do that? You're two trying to do that? You're two trying to do that? Yeah, definitely just getting stronger faster, everything all they have above. But one of my big things is being a leader and kind of just not trying to look, still look up to Jack and JT and kind of have my own kind of leadership and be able to bring people into it. So I feel like I kind of have a lot of leaders on the B-line and have to be in position.
So we kind of all kind of just count off the children and all of us. There's been a tough challenge for you to be able to open up these guys. Same with them all, be ready, be on the field. Just keep it going. And try to keep it going. So leaders, those guys, how's that transition going to be? I'm competitive and we love it. We all competitive people, we all love to fish each other. And that's what they're bringing the best out of all of us. I feel like we all just kind of bouncing off each other and see what one person does and be kind of better than the archival box. And we all kind of just kind of build one great thing. Hey, do you remember when last year when you got to get the shot at full-backing club? And the day of coaching that I did at two folks, damn, I might have a good time back. Because you're a JXR, you're a Slavian. It gets touched down. So I definitely did it in high school. I was full-backed and a little bit of Titan. So I feel like we kind of saw what I could do there in Coach Wilson. I was when he left watching it too, before he left. And I feel like he planned that seed and Coach Day's head. And Coach Day kind of just went for it and tried to do the best I could to do it.
Is that continuing now? I mean, I'm going to do anything in the screen. New playbook, I did not know yet. I haven't got that far. I'm going to do the younger thing. I'm going to have to talk for a second. Yeah, look at that. I like to think myself as a football player. I can really play any position on the field you need me to. Just give me a weaker two to learn it and kind of perfect it. And I'll try to do my best for you. Kid Jack, you're the same thing. Oh, yeah. Don't like what you're talking about. We're athletes, that's why. He was talking to Coach Johnson on Tuesday about some of the conversations he was sort of sighted you and about how to out-touch the conversations after JT and Jack decided to come back. So, I'm going to wait until those weird perspectives didn't. And how did that help you maybe get the right mindset against what you did in the screen? Um, definitely kind of seeing it all the way through. I feel like people kind of just see what happened and they don't know everything that goes into it. How long the season is now. What you got to do to prepare for and what's happening all that time from here to to then. So, I feel like we definitely just coached in me kind of connected. And we kind of just talked.
Man, oh man. And he kind of just sent straight to me. And I feel like he kind of both had a great conversation. And we know we're making it together. Making each other better every day. And we got the four best DNs, five best DNs, honestly. And the coach football and we're going to be one of the best DLs and coach football. How do you feel like a better player today than you were again in the season? Um, I feel like I've taken big steps in my roles of just being responsible and being more of a leader. And kind of stepping up and taking a step to kind of get out there more on the team and kind of bring people in. And I feel like I'm kind of helping out more. I think record in around the past, the same with TGFC. Zip sale. I mean, it sounds bizarre, but I mean the season goes by so fast already. So when you're kind of like week 10 and you're like wow, it's already week 10. So now it kind of gives you more time to kind of enjoy it and kind of savor it. Because remember, you're here for like refreshments, like frustration. But you don't want to spend all your time in the first month of the year, right? Oh, yeah. There is a, that pace yourself there.
I mean, there is a mindset that I did in the season. Yeah, definitely. Definitely going to have that mental stability to handle all those weeks and all those practices. How much has Larry talked to you guys around a bit? Last question right here. 2016, 2017, 4 NFL defense and $200 in the same way. So how much does he talk to that guy? I mean, he doesn't have to talk about it. We know about it. We've seen it every day. We watch the film. We see them all working together. We know what it could be. We know we could become. We know we were right at the same, we're at the right place at the right time. And God wanted us to be here. And He knew we wanted us all to come together and kind of play together and be able to bounce off and just perfect our craft together. And I feel like we all are just great individuals and we come together at some discussion. How did your expectation like this beat up with how do you feel? You put it down to this point of guess. I feel like I've made the plays that came to me. And that's where the Aachengan control. I've had more opportunities as years progressed and been in spots to be here on the ball. But the expectation was to come here and contribute to the team and try to find a way to push the team to win games at Aachengan.
And to be better than they were actually in for me to play better than Aachengan was. So really just coming to try to grow with myself and with the team. So that was my big goal and I feel like I've done a good job and the team has done a good job progressing through the year and getting better. So yeah, that's all I can say about that. Okay, the right thing made a lot of progress. Yeah, I feel just standing here right now. Just feel like a different season. What does it feel like for you going into playoffs? You know, you know, you'll get to go and you want to necessarily do a regular season, but here you are. Right? I mean, what is that sense that you have right now? It's a different game. It's about the regular season. I mean, everybody wants to say it's a new season in terms of, because if everybody's 0-0 right now, when you keep going, if you lose, you're done. But generally, that's how you play every game. You know, that play every game is your last game. So for me, I don't think it's really any difference. You have to go play at a high level every game. And that can't be based at home.
There's a player in the game. So you have to go play every game like he's the same thing. So I would say in terms of that. No, you just have to play the game. Play the game is there. What feels different about this defense right now going into this? You know, you'll feel even more. You know, good by the time we close together. What was that? I mean, what is your sense of the further it's sort of state of the defense? I feel like we progressed throughout this season. We had to make a change after game 6, because we lost, and we didn't play well at the game. And I feel like we'd grown from that and got into a better place. And over these past two weeks, off just realizing, OK, these are the things that we messed up throughout the year. These are what we need to fix. These are what this team is trying to explore on us. So just really going back to everything we've seen, we'll get into better for this kind of game. For the next moment. Last couple of questions. Tell me your favorite fucking health. How does the Tennessee's wide split, the privacy, in fact, you as a subject?
I feel like it makes the game more, more, more game. It makes you receive it as a DB set the play a second game than the guys up front. And it makes it, truthfully, like those guys have to do their job. And these guys have to do your job. You got to be able to stop the run, if you have the run fit, and yet to be able to stop the attack with the people you have out there. So that's what they do, and they do it at a really low level. So it's going to be tough to go in. And finally, what's the joy-cuff? Let's just ask you. The coach knows the time, about the speed at which there, you guys are at the call-in lane. This is built for potential visits of the past facts. You can play call-in, you can play with the player with kind of bandages, and they can get to you. So you just speed it up just by this call-in lane. All right, it allows you to get your clean-sender by that. So earlier, just a ability to see the formation, see what keys that you have before the play, and have knowledge of your job, and not really thinking. Being able to play and not think during the game is a really big thing. So whenever you can get the call out faster, and play at a high level, and play without thought, that's a really good thing for your team.
Get a look, thank you very much. You're a GFG, all your clubbies. It gets touched down. So I definitely did it in high school. I was pulled back and a little bit of tidied in. So I feel like it kind of saw what I could do there, and Coach Wilson, obviously, he left Washington too, for he left. And I feel like you're playing that seed in Coach Day's head, and Coach Day kind of just went for it, and tried to do the best I could to do it. Is that continuing now, I mean, right? Do anything in the screen? New playbook, I do not know yet. I haven't got that far. How tall percent of you are? I like to think myself as a football player. I can really play any position on the field, and even me too. Just give me a weaker two to learn it, and kind of perfect it, and try to do my best for you. Can you check me the same thing? Oh yeah. I don't want that. We're athletes, that's why. I'm going to be a coach for Johnson on Tuesday about some of the conversations and sort of start viewing it. Got out to have some conversations after you JT and Jack decided to come back. Just get a weight into those, and you're perspective, and how did that help you when you did the right mindset against being in this club?
Definitely kind of seeing it all the way through. I feel like people kind of just see what happened, and they don't know everything that goes into it, how long the season is now. What you got to do to prepare for, and what's happening all that time from here to then. So I feel like we definitely just coached JT and me kind of connected, and we kind of just talked to the man or man, and he kind of just sent straight to me, and I feel like we kind of broke it. That's what I mean, we're making it together. Making each other better every day, and we got the four best Dn's, five best Dn's, honestly, and then coach football, and we're going to be one of the best D-Lines and coach football. How do you feel about the title player today at any more academy season? I feel like I've taken big steps in my rules of just being responsible and being more of a leader, and kind of stepping up and taking a step to kind of get out there more on the team, and kind of bring people in, and I feel like I'm kind of helping out more. How do you recommend around the past season to TKFC? The Zip Sound. I mean, the sounds bizarre, but I mean, the season goes by so fast already, so when you're kind of like week 10, and you're like wow, it's already week 10, so now it's kind of getting more time.
It gives you more time to kind of enjoy it, and kind of savor it, because I'm already here for a really refreshing, sweet, sweet season. But you don't want to spend all your time on the first month of the year, right? Oh yeah. There is a, not pace yourself that, but I mean, there is a mindset that we've been doing this season. Yeah, definitely, definitely going to have that mental stability to handle all those weeks, and all those practices. How much has Larry talked to you guys about in the past season? The 2016-2017 4-LFVP Fetchers, all in the same position. How much has he talked to you about that? I mean, he doesn't have to talk about it. We know about it. We've seen it every day. We watch the film. We see him all working together. We know what it could be. We know what we could become. So we know we're at the same, we're at the right place at the right time, and God wanted us to be here, and he knew we wanted us all to come together and kind of play together, and be able to bounce off, and just perfect our craft together. And I feel like we all are just great individuals, and we come together at something special. You get like good coaches who believe in you, and they give you the tools to go out there and just play with confidence. You know, not their doubting yourself. You got your teammates, you got your back.
My first play, when I got up there to the seat, when DeZel, IGB and Jermaine, the first thing they say is, no worry, just go out there and play with confidence. You know the tools, it's usual tools. Just go out there and make a play. And we're about to play coming to you. We're just so time and show our job. You just do it. And then like, say what goes well, he gives me, he puts me in a position like the drills we put in, the work we put in, the one I went to, so I just go out there and perform at the highest level. How much better are you right now than maybe last month, and forcefully right now? I mean, I got way better just because I've transitioned a little bit to the inside. Nick was far so I'm like, now I actually just like catch, catch, take me again. It's often prevers not, it's not always press at the line. So it's like, now maybe like move my feet, move my hands, like see, like what I got to do just like, just in case I got to go back in corner, I can, I plan, oh, now I'm very confident out there. Do you think that Nick was a natural fit for you or have you had to kind of convince yourself to transition around? I mean, I feel like it's natural for me because I feel like me individually I'm a fast learner.
I'm a fast learner, like coaches help us like learn fast, like because they're always honest about the techniques and stuff. So you like, you write down like pick up all the things you did, like when we get out of the coaches to like the techniques always, you just go out there and play like fast spot, and it would like, like, versatile, you're able to just go out there and just compete. Is that where you kind of stuff this spring, or do you get kind of counter-melt there? So I'm really been stuck there this spring, a little bit right. Whenever you get it to like other things, I just bounce out there every once in a while, just like have fun, see if I still got it every once in a while. So this is good as well to compete at most spots. You mentioned the technique, what technique tips and things that you had to pick up and learn from, what's walking from taking the inside? I mean, this is always like, you know, I coach what, coaches ask me hands, like see it, you see it, move your feet, and then get your hands on the mat. So it's like, when you be like, are you out there, are you able to like, just process like the way the receiver comes off the ball, looking at the hips, and seeing like the way he moves it, are you able to pick up like the row constant,
like you can get out of that, like, so it's being like, under coach walls or me, like as a player, and just like, him breaking out football to you like, one on one, it's like very beneficial. What was the hardest part of making that transition from outside that sense? I really just say like, you corner, you've got your cover two, you've covered three, eight, you're covering one, it's easy, but you got nickel, now so many responsibilities, you got to see like the row concepts, you got to be able to process, like, I ain't going to rush faster than what you got to do at corner, and just be able to like, everything's quid, like your transition, you got to like, you got to move fast, you got to just learn to move fast. It's like game recognition, where you think maybe from the most since you got to, how much did you got to run? I would definitely say, I would definitely say, as much as how you get to like college, it's a little bit different, like high school, we don't got to worry about things like that. When I want you to get to like college or school like this, like your recognition of plays, like your loyal drops, the way like the coverage is supposed to be played, understand all your teammates, what plus if you have any feel, it's like it gets easy.
What if you're proud of the band? It's very talented, you can do some humble, humble guy, great teammate, very supportive, it's like God that you're going around because you can feed off your energy because you can see like, you make a play, he's like, he like, IGB, it's like IGB 2.0, so he's like, when you get out there with guys like that, with good energy, it makes you play a little bit harder, and then like, when you make a play, he's out there, he's helping you, like, he's being out there with him, he's a good player. Lundle's had a tough question, ten full kids, come to Ohio State obviously in the last few years, so, I'll be serious now. What is it about Lundle that gets you to play at Ohio State? It's a big question, I know, the question. Let me just ask some questions because we have so many kids come out of Lundle and just play at games, elite schools, and they like, like, track's a big part of it because I mean, actually in Lundle everybody that I run, track like this, it's like, you don't really get a choice.
You able to just like get out here and like, know how to compete, and then like, you like, game builds that mental toughness into you, so I was like, have you like, I heard now, you got to be mentally tough because I'm in my life. Life's not going to be easy, so it's like being out here, being out here, being out here, being out here and being out here, being out here, being out here, being out here, being out here. I know we got to ask. QT, how do you describe the mentality of the defense right now in this opportunity for a rematch award? Yeah, hungry and thankful. I mean, we know how the last time, you know, we had a chip on our shoulder. I mean, we were riding high before that game and we took that loss and we came back how to make up a changes, but I think we understand what, you know, everything's that stick right now, you know, just fighting to where another house, stage jersey for the next game, that's what's on stake and just to be able to represent this state and this team. I mean, we understand what's on the line and, you know, we're just hungry and blessed that we get this opportunity playing the Rose Bowl. Right behind your Adam King, WBNS. What do you remember most about walking off the field in Eugene?
Those kind of goals you're eyes in that moment? I mean, there is a... I don't think anybody imagined it, imagine us losing. You know, I didn't, that's for sure. And I think after that it was kind of hit deep. I understand it that man, we still, there's still a lot of ball left to be played. I mean, you can let it sting for a little bit, but you know, if you let it carry over too long, then, you know, there it goes, there it goes your whole season. But I think we did a great job of just understanding, coming together in this room right here, not being afraid of display or hold a accountability from one another. And, you know, as that happened, we came back, we grouped, and, you know, we're just going right now. And I'm just blessed for those specific moments, you know, losing. I mean, no one wants to lose, but the testimonies and the things you're taught within those little situations speaks of all of you. After all, right, Vladimir Drow.
Hey, Jay, what did you see from King Drow? That last couple of weeks, was there like a push from him, and there were no big conversations with him, and he can seem like he's playing in this basketball, and he's in the same seat. Yeah, I mean, that's my boy. He's in the R2X club too, but, you know, Kiyada, I mean, every time his numbers call, he goes out there and makes the most of it, no matter where we are in the game. When he goes out there, he's just hungry. He wants to go make plays, and, you know, we see it in practice, so it's not surprising to us. There were a bit of it, so I'll just just pass. Dylan gave us obviously a very elusive and retellent, and he's not very tall. How important it could be to just kind of stay in your past rush lanes, and neglect a lot of balls, and kind of make a difference that way? Yeah, I think it just comes out being disciplined. No one who you're playing against, like you said, he's a, he's sure, but he's very elusive. I mean, he can, he is making throws. I mean, he get out the parking to everything. So I think for us, we just have to discipline him, and just continue to just meet with Coach Jay,
meet with the coach's nose, and understand how we can just eliminate that. One question about you and Jeff. I mean, your personality seems to be a little different. You're more on the quiet side. He's not. Yeah. How about you? You've played together four years, both five-star guys, kind of describe your relationship with him, friendship with him, and just kind of how you cop with each other. Man, that's my brother, like he said. We're different, but very alike. I think outside, like you said, he's louder, I'm quiet, but once we're on that field, we're like the same person. We'll do anything for this team. We'll die for our players, and we'll give everything we got. Room together for four years, correct? Yeah. Fall camp. Every room. Yeah. Sometimes go over there. Is there more over there? Yeah. The neat one, who's the messy one? We have our share of days when we, when I'm neat, he's neat. Or, you know, we might both be messy, but we do a good job. No problem. Yeah. I'd probably say I'm a better-cooked jack, though.
Tony Gertman, like I have. When you're playing a team for the second time, and that was almost a season to go by now, how much of, are you at square one with the scouting and preparation? How much do you take from that game? How much do you avoid taking so that you don't have any preconceived notions of what you're going up against on the offense? On the offense-fly? I say it's pretty 50-50. I mean, that game, like you said, was a while ago, but at the same time, they elevated as a team, so did we. So we understand that they had, they made some changes for sure. You know, there's, there's a certain tendency we can take back from that game, but we also understand that they went on a little run after that, and we can see that they elevated as an offense. So we just got to continue to watch those games, dissect the other games, and just continue to see what stands out and what they changed from the, for the past game. We got a couple calls on zoom that will wrap up with, first we have Nick Hamilton from Nightcast Media. Nick?
I just wanted to ask you basically about the synergy of this defense and how you guys were able to not only celebrate the triumphs, but get through the adversity, be able to be this top-notch defense that you are in college football today. Here, repeat the question one more time. Yeah, no problem. I want to ask you about the synergy you are able to develop over the course of the season, obviously celebrating the triumphs, but also getting through the adversities to where you are, are the top-notch defense that you are today. Yeah, I mean, like you said, we went through a lot of trials to trials, but there's also, there's a lot of things we can take away from all the wins and losses. And from those, those wins, we understood that, hey, we can be the best defense in the country, and from those losses, we understand that there's still things that need to be fixed. And I think when you take all that in at once, that it comes down to the common talk, which is, there's always learning points everywhere. And depending how we dissect those games or how we just continue to come as one and elevate,
we continue to just collect all those learning points and just continue to grow from them. And then, run the final question. Joey Coffin, Columbus Dispatch. Joey? JT, what have you guys done better in the Tennessee game and just late in the season, you think about turning some of the pressures that you've got on the quarterbacks and the sacks and getting home in some of those situations? Yeah, I think it was more just understanding the defense as a whole, understanding everybody's job. I think as the season went on, we got to understand that, you know, we have to know what's going on in the backhand, we have to know what's going on with the linebacker crew to understand what plays we have, room of freedom. And I think once we understood that and got a better understanding of everybody's job, I mean, it showed this play because, you know, everybody knows what each other is doing. It's not like the linebackers know what they're doing. The corners and B.I., they know only their job. I think we all know each other's job and we continue to ask each other questions
on, you know, if they're listening how they can get to the quarterback and, you know, if I'm dropping, playing quarterbacks, but I can ask Cody on how to open field tackle it. So, you know, we just kind of lean on each other's understanding because, you know, like I said, like Denzel knows how to play corner-bedded and I know how to play corner. So, you know, he has more wisdom at that position than I do. JT, thank you very much. Thank you. Thanks, man. The best period of moments like that when the ball kind of comes in. Definitely, a little bit of both. Obviously, I just wanted the team to win. I think we got a chance to win. You know, definitely towards the end of the stretch that last drive. I was a couple of plays here, a couple calls that he made me sure they've got. But, I think the frustration more so it just comes from, you know, wanting to win more than anything. You said he was a little surprised so much attention. You got right away from your defense. How about you? Yeah, definitely. You may be killed in more one-on-ones kind of how the game playing with set up. You didn't have a lot of different coverage out of cloud to my side.
And this is kind of how the game goes. What's the process of it? I know it's sometimes where, or whatever reason, just see that. Yeah, definitely. Especially in college, a lot of the game friends defensively were taking the away. You know, we had a lot of success at a high-speed. One of the ball had a different, the weapons, they kind of still get the victories. And I was the only one who could continue to do better jobs when I had it. Why are you taking the game? The process has been like post-game, getting on the same page with Kyler. You guys exchange text, or you guys get into the film? Yeah, film, definitely. Kind of ask me what did I see there, kind of go over and play. And I just kind of get to know what I saw and kind of different feedback there. Mark, I get it. We're asking questions about the previous game. Are you the type of guy to let a game like that winger or how do you flush it? Yeah, you got to move on. Got to move on. It's a long season. Got 16 more of them. Hopefully, you know, I can stay healthy throughout the year and just continue to build and get better each week.
Okay, did so much work throughout the off season to get on the same page. How different is it when you get into that regular season? Yeah, it's totally different. It's totally different. You can do a lot of things, you know, in shirts and shorts. And then once you go out there, put practice and get pads on. You do like the joint practice we did with the colds, but there's nothing like actually going out there. And live action and really trying to be on the same page. So I think that relationship will continue to develop and we'll get better. Is that it? It's just a matter of course then. This month's the same game. Yeah, definitely, definitely. Like I said, that was kind of my first live action together. So it can continue to be there. When you're early impressions on your turn on the field together and when the previous season was, was it? Yeah, but now obviously I have a death respect, you know, JG's call or preseason. And obviously be off a really healthy. That's kind of the most important thing. I obviously got a lot of health going forward. So, um, that's it. Marvin, were you early impressions of the Rams? What do you think of the Rams? Yeah, I mean, they're a good team. They're good physical team. I got a new lot of new guys up front, I think.
That's kind of where the strong suit is. Kind of a little different to Buffalo, come over to a little match coverage. So I'm excited to go. Personally, when the belts take taking one of my opportunities, how do you feel today? Wasn't many of them. Wasn't many of them. Wasn't many of them. So, uh, I thought I could be good. I'm just sure you think game versus just playing. You know, not getting a preseason game actually. I think it was three season. It was definitely, definitely thinking a lot out there. And, um, you know, I think I'll come with reps. I think the thinking less, you're just going out there and playing. Definitely come with reps. And it's something you're on, you're better at. But, um, definitely say I was thinking a lot out there. Is there anything you can do to improve that? That's from coverage. And I think you did in the past because you're going to finish that a lot on this side. Yeah, I mean, you just got to see you get open for yourself, making yourself available. And when the ball does, can you make it into a play? Um, this, he's just taking you away. That means other guys are having a chance to get open. So, uh, that's not kind of how I look at it. It's no longer since it's, you know, offense. That's the best thing of course. That kind of thing would be with pilot.
Is there something that comes pretty quickly in a new game? Or is there something like that? I don't mind that. Uh, hopefully sooner or later, I think. Um, I'll continue to see you. We'll see. I don't think we're in a bad place right now at all. Obviously, I don't really think that. But, uh, just a live episode, continue to grow and show. I think how I believe maybe different than somebody else may believe. You know, like, uh, practice. At least like the positive, you know, I mean, so. But he, the energy, yeah, would be on just, uh, height of the beyond. So I was kind of, how the goal month, um, living my whole life on the NFL team captain, like specifically in a NFL, I wasn't a captain in high school. I wasn't a captain in college. But I'm on the joke, I was in high school. I feel like I'm nodding to the captain's like, is that I felt? Yeah. Um, but that would be awesome, you know, but, you know, that happens. I'd be great, but not either way. I want to assume a role as a captain from the perspective of guys.
I want to give a visual word. And to get back in that one. Yeah. I mean, I can't say that, um, I mean, I guess the biggest thing is that I felt like how you used to move past, but it didn't take just the first LTAs. It took training left and right once this season and because I know what was going to be true. So I was going to go out of the grips, um, just to get back to feeling like myself for day one LTAs. And then that whole first week, but now like today specifically just changing some small things with my feet. That is it. Talking about the long coach. I've seen things I'm doing my feet to get to that, to sell my traditional angle that I love to sit on. I thought I felt great already, but I felt even better. Sorry, the more excited tomorrow now, I'm getting my feet back and how I like the right side and on the left side. So I'm excited. I mean, obviously I feel like, um, in the league, whether I left the right or they're still going against Premier Guy.
So obviously, you're high expectations for the left angle. I tackle, but, um, there's definitely, uh, like, the level of energy, like the expectation definitely taking the human side. Because now, I can not deny the blind side. That's the, that's the tackle role, you know, so, um, so yeah, I would say in terms of communications for us. This is even outside of the facility, just stuff like that, like really creating that. The tackle quarterback, bond even more often. The old I think has been something that's even been cool. I got the text one day. It's like, hey, thank you for the love. I was like, you know, yeah, I've been training both. I've been training both. You know, I, I asked after the season there, like, honestly, you know, we'll talk to you some training season. I just got a text one. I don't know how this was, but for agency, then, so I was like, you know, what? I had a whole season right tackle. So if I get the word, I'm going, I'm standing right tackle.
I'll just do what I did before I'm built on that. Plus, I was like, I might as well just train the left tackle now. As if we're going to be left tackle. And I'd rather do that than train on right tackle with the club. Hey, you know what I mean? So I'm like, don't you just prepare an advance. I was like, it was God. You know, I think occasionally on third down, there'll be a lot of twists. I was just not like, it's on on that. It goes on. And I think that was my mindset for like the first half of the season. Like, I didn't have to go once again with some positive. Oh, gosh, I did that. I try to figure out, okay, like, this is this is the type of rush. I mean, again, this is how this guy usually rushes. If I get the vibe, this is how the ends like the rush, you know, tackles that first year guys. You got the premier patch on, you know, what it was going to be. You know, we'll be every stud. And honestly, just knowing that's kind of an advantage to, so you're not, you're not, you're not, oh, the problems with my psyche. It was never air-dommit. But it comes out the my psyche. Three plays in a row.
Two minutes. I knew that. It was the one. And they said a lot of, you know what I mean? I'm watching more everybody else. And he rarely, you know, it goes out there occasionally. I'll third down. I was like, you know, I was like, are you going to pick me? You know what I mean? So, effect, it's kind of, it's also kind of an advantage in a way. But it's also exciting, like, okay, I'm going to get the hardest look. You know, those are real, real reps, you know, the things. So, really out on our way to kind of process. And I was like, hey, when I tell me, let me know about my, I'm just going to train it. I was training all left. So, TAs, I guess if I didn't hear anything about TAs, I would have came in like, so. You know what I mean? Because just like, I'm cool with training both, continue. I would have been cool with training both continually. But I feel like anybody, any position will be like, okay, like, you want to as soon as possible give your feet kind of settled in, your hips settled in, your hands settled in, certain kind of that.
Would it have been harder for you to work both very healthy? No. But, they're definitely, but in terms of the development, they're definitely a lot faster, they're staying on one side. But I think having that week's that we had the transition with seasons over, I'm going to like those five. You know, good. I'm trying to get up to put them in the front and have them weak things at a time right now. But when it comes back, I'm going to show them the one house. I've got a house not too far from, so I told them, I got that house. I can yell outside. Have you jaded? You know, I mean so. Yeah. That's doesn't, I don't need stock or anything. Doesn't mean anything, so we're, we have to play on Friday and that's really all that matters. We're going to take two more from Zoom before turning it back. Our first one's going to come from Stephen from Cleveland.com. Go ahead.
It's the fun. I'm sorry. Hey Caleb, we've seen, you were talking about the Ohio State Office, the success that they've had. Obviously Jeremiah has been a big part of that. What's it been like this year going against him in practice and, you know, after doing that? Does it surprise at all to see him having the success he's had as a freshman? No, it doesn't bring surprises. It was pretty, pretty easy to see the talent that he has and the blessings that God has put on his plate. But it's always a challenge going against Jeremiah and other receivers and Mecca and Karnana practice. And even guys like Brandon and his impression Rogers, they do a great job bringing looks for the defense and create a lot of obstacles. Our final question from Zoom is going to come from Dan Hope. Go ahead Dan. Caleb, you, Quinn had a lot of success against you guys when you played him at Alabama last year. Just what do you remember from going up against him last year and what can you learn from that game? Really smart quarterback knows how to operate their offense,
post the ball in the right places, and then Coach Narkeeson does a great job putting him in positions to win. All right, back to you. Thank you Rob Aller, Columbus Dispatch, Caleb, JT and Jack Land opposite sides and they is opposite off the field. As they are on in terms of personality and just the people they are. They are offices but they are also one of the closest people I know they have spent a lot of time together. They have come from different sides of the country so they are different people for sure. But they are both really great people and really great men. I am sorry I respect both of them. How did you do that? I am not going to do that. Throughout the season we would always see you on Wednesday nights you and Nathan would be some of the last people off the field.
Are the things that you are working on after a practice always the same? Is it a routine? What are the things that you are hoping to get out of those extra moments after practice? We have some routine, the key is that we need to go into the game and then also change the week to week based on what our jobs are going to put us into doing. Every week we go through the same things and then we add certain things that we do for what the team that we play is going to ask us to accommodate. Bill, we have been on this dispatch. I already got one here. Oh okay, Joe and Goplin called us this dispatch. When? When? Texas uses play action and Nathan uses play action to create a bit of what do they do well and those spots and what do you guys do in those moments with Quinn? They do a really good job with I Candy. It creates a lot of challenges for defense in order to see if it is runner pass and see because that is when they are going to take their shots too as well. I really just have been great eye discipline seeing the line and seeing what is telling us.
So that is what it does. Deep right, Nick Walker, Letterman role? You guys had a pretty good game plan for Tyler Warren when you guys played him. You guys have another Texas guy that is going to tighten and gun him. What do you guys have to do to limit him and what do you think about his game? He is a really good player. He makes a lot of plays and he has a lot of receiving hours this year. So really just do the same thing we have done all year. Just be disciplined in our responsibilities and if you are on them you have to make a play when it comes. Right, one of the mandra billets. Play them.com. When you know that their receivers is kind of a whole, you know, they spread ball around and see what stands out about the way that they can shut the ball around and listen to you guys. A lot of really good athletes. I played with Isaiah Bond last year who is a really great receiver. A lot of speed. And then all the receivers have made a lot of plays. So I mean everybody has a bill on their peasy cues if we are going to stop them and have a do a really good job.
From here on you are Tim May, Letterman role? Yeah, Kale, but you moved up here and I don't have to tell you when you moved up basically a year ago. It was a little bit of a leap of faith because you know how many athletes are on this team and get athletes to stop. But when did you really feel this defense come into its own and then then pass that man watching in Rose Bowl you're recognition of what was coming seem to be on point. Did it feel like that? I mean you personally. I think the defense has played really well throughout the season. I think we've had games where we played better and games where we haven't put it all together. But I think that's how all defenses are. So I can't say there's a certain moment where I think we put it together. But what's your second part of your question? You seem really on point against Oregon about recognizing what was what was coming. I mean you were really active out there directing and things like that. Did it feel like that?
I feel like as Luke said earlier the preparation that we put in goes into that and just feeling comfortable and what we're doing comfortable and what we're seeing with the other teams. I feel like that's a that allows us to play fast and can me and Laketon to communicate everybody else. Do I miss anyone's questions here Steve how long in front of you in this sports? Yeah Caleb but you came to high state to play for national championship and there were a lot of ups and downs throughout the season. Just to be in this position the last four teams still live just you feel validated by that and did you always have faith that this is how it was going to turn out? I came to a high state to become a better player and to help the team be as good as it can be not to win a national championship. Like that wasn't the only goal for me coming here really just wanted to be in the team and be with the brotherhood. But it's a great feeling being in the final four and being with the team and everything that comes with that but it's a blessing to be here. And one final question Bill Reben once plus this back.
I did want to call up when I talk to you back to the game you said when they scored their first and second touchdown you were really hot on the sidelines. What was your message to the team and you know that's a good off that they're going to score against most people. Why were you so hot? Really just because we didn't execute which let them score so we've done that a lot which is something we can't do in these big games and these games where it's when they go home. So we got to make the plays when they come and get our competitive excellence as coach Dases make the play where your numbers call. I feel like they're definitely picking up quick. I mean I was in their shoes one time and I had Zach Harrison, Javante and Tyler Freidel in front of me. So I feel like I'm just trying to be kind of one of those peers that they work for me and kind of just give them the steps to get there. And I feel like they're definitely picking up quick and they're definitely going to be one of the great rushmen. So we coach Josh and Salki, JT and Jack are probably going to be the ton of their experience.
Same you have some real opportunities for me which are a lot of them. Is there a difference in the look for it? Does the video have a chance? But the last couple. I feel like all the camps I've definitely got a big course learned and I love that side. I asked Coach J4 I love getting more reps because I just like protecting my craft. So I mean some people may not need it, some other people need it but I mean I just like to give me reps. I mean for me it's always just kind of getting my little details perfectly, like my steps and my footing. Kind of just perfecting my toolbox and what we call it and my craft and just trying to be a second winner every place. So it's kind of different. Yeah, definitely just getting stronger faster, everything all they've got. But one of my big things is being a leader and kind of just not trying to still look up to Jack and JT and kind of have my own kind of leadership and be able to bring people into.
So I feel like we kind of have a lot of leaders on the D line at the D position. So we kind of just kind of just kind of talk about children and others. So you need to know what's going on. And we've had it and we love it. We've all had the people who we all look at each other and that's the way to bring the best out of all of this. We all just kind of bounce it off each other and see what one person does and to kind of build it into our actual box. And we all kind of build one great thing. Hey, you have been around last year and you got the shot of the full back in the box. And they approach you that I there and you coach them. I mean, I did come about because you're a judge. I'm your lobby. Okay. So I definitely did it in high school. I was full back and a little bit tired and so I feel like it kind of saw what I could do there in coach Wilson. Honestly, you love watching it too before you left and I feel like you playing that seed in coach Day's head and coach Day kind of just went for it and tried to do the best I could to do it.
And you're the genuine nail man. New playbook, I do not know you haven't got that far. I like to think myself as a football player. I can really play any position on the field you need me to just give me a weaker to learn it and kind of perfect it and try to do what that's for you. Can you check the same thing? Oh yeah. And what about what? I was talking to coach Johnson on Tuesday about sort of the conversations and sort of sought you and got out to absent conversations after JT and Jack decided to come back. Just got a win into those. You're perspective and how do that help you really get the right mindset I guess. Um, definitely kind of seeing it all the way through. I feel like people kind of just see what happened and they don't know everything that goes into it. I feel like I'm on the season is now what you got to do to prepare for and what happened and all that time from here to then. So I feel like we definitely just coached in me kind of connected and we kind of just talks man-to-man and he kind of just sent straight to me and I feel like we kind of both have been together.
We know we're making it together. We're making each other better every day and we got the four best Dn's, five best Dn's honestly in the college football and we're going to be one of the best D lines in college football. What do you feel like a better player today at any work in this season? I feel like I'm taking big steps in my roles of just being responsible and being more of a leader and kind of stepping up and taking a step to kind of get out there more on the team. They kind of bring people in and I feel like we're kind of helping out more. How do you record your head around the past season? The TKH season. The good sound. I mean, the sounds bizarre but I mean the season goes by so fast already. And you're kind of like week 10 and you're like wow it's already week 10 so now it's kind of gives you more time to kind of enjoy it and kind of savor it because you're in here for like a freshman's place. It's here once been on your powder for the first month of the year right? Oh yeah. There is a light set of things that I did in the season. Yeah definitely definitely going to have that mental stability to handle all those weeks and all those practices.
How much has Larry talked to you guys around like that? The last question right here. 2016, 2017, 2017, 4 NFL D-French Awards are in San Jose. How much does he talk to that? I mean he doesn't have to talk about it. We know about it. We've seen it every day. We watch the film. We see them all working together. We know what it could be. We know we could become. So we know we're right at the same, we're at the right place at the right time and God wanted us to be here and we knew we wanted us all to come together and kind of play together and be able to bounce off and just perfect our craft together. I feel like we all are just great individuals and we come together and something's going to happen. Great. Doing it? What are the deliberations? I'm surprised it's even a conversation. Like it should always be live. Let's tell you. Tell you. Tell you. Tell you play football. So obviously there's a proximity to the season which is a little reckless, I understand that. But in spring we're competing for jobs. I mean if I'm a quarterback I'm asking to be live so I can show him how I'm different than you know. Anyone that can't be live. You know what I mean? They're always trying to find an edge and if you're never fully alive I don't think you fully give guys opportunity to be who they want to be or who they can be.
So that being said, I will cast my vote but that will not be my final decision on that but I will cast my vote. The guys have handled it well. It was good for all parties involved and more we can do that better but ensure that is coming to a close here very quickly. So. That would be 20% right. Jeremiah off the field we saw after practice on this Saturday that the mob that came to get autographs and things. When you're working with him on all these things you're talking about but also dealing with the life of being one of the biggest names in college football. How do you help mentor him in that aspect? Yeah I mean it's a blessing to be able to be in a position where you know can provide insight or I wouldn't say recommendations but just give perspective. How he chooses to receive the first perspective or not one or not he always does but which is fine but to be in that position is really humbling.
That being said he does a really good job on his own. He doesn't need to check on too much. He's really done a great job. Again the way he was raised and his morals and humble would always sign and taking pictures. I'm always trying to be the bad guy for him because he's not going to be and just says again more about his character. But he's not the only guy any guy would kind of do that. We have a group full of awesome young guys but Jeremiah has done a great job with it. He's got a job with it and he's definitely growing at an exponential rate to say the least. But I think he's built for it and he's been handled at a high level. But those around him were trying to help him out a little bit. What made Creed seed the first freshman to this black striker? Yeah I mean that's a good question. I think that you know, frankly you know I don't know I'm not really fully evolved with that.
So I can be but I wasn't. You know I think that people on the outside would be defense or even coach day or anybody brought it to my attention. You know we're kind of just going about practice and that's our expectation and make plays not make mistakes. And he was starting to make a lot of a lot of plays consistently. I think the consistent level that he's been as a person being on being on time and doing his job description on each play and the ball is coming your way and making some big plays. And you know it starts to be seen by your peers and your peers are asking for it. They start barking, getting a stripe off all those kind of things. That's the ultimate sign of respect. I think with your peers you know go to your bat. He's not going for his bat. No one other people are bringing it to your position coach. I think it speaks volumes of the general respect that you're earning through the process. So I think it's something like that happened and you know as well as they're based on his peers and the other coaches. So on christeningcleanland.com. Ryan Day was talking about home press.
He's been this spring with Austin Sareville. All that he's been able to do and Tyler Bohn was talking last week about the importance of the cross training and all that that goes into that. How much have you seen Austin benefit from this spring and everywhere that he's been and helping with peace do you think he's going to be regardless of where he fits on this offensive line? Yeah I think Austin has been awesome. I mean he literally what was they say. He played every spot every position. We just move around you know and handles it and you know he's one of those guys. I feel like he watched film over and over again day after day. His name never really gets brought up you know in a good way like you know the online. Your name gets brought up when usually not going as well you know I mean they're literally at the point of attack on every single play. So there's nowhere to hide and so but Austin when his name is brought up and say man that was a good job. Right good job pass off that combo whatever it's always positive and really impressed with him. He started in the winter to a great job through the winter again continuing to build a respect for his peers and then he's going to good job. Really good job just being very consistent to spring.
Are left Jeff Gilbert press pros? Brian it's that you've been working more with the whole offense. When it comes to quarterback play what has grown in your I don't know appreciation of that position and what those guys have to do and go through. What do you think more about those guys versus maybe what you thought before is just a wide receiver guy? Yeah I mean I mean there's no just a wide receiver guy. If you are just a wide receiver guy you won't be a very late or long. It's all about quarterback play you know so I think in that same world though to the point is that you know to be a great receiver or a great receiver or receiver guy whatever you want to call it. There's only one page just the quarterbacks page so everything is based off them there. Whether it be their progression their timing the stresses they have is what we're trying to minimize so. If you don't fully understand the quarterback play it's hard to maximize receiver play I think you know that being said yeah I'm still always learning you know I think that I can't stand these jumped out massively right now but I would say that.
I guess I would say that the preparation level I mean the what is required to execute and play at a high level it's just not capable in the a lot of time right I mean there's only so much time where I'll be with players. If you're not willing to spend you know your own time getting prepared for practice to be to maximize one's ability there's a good chance you're not going to maximize your ability so you know other positions I mean align same thing I mean receiver play sometimes can. Get away from it we do a great job studying and being in the room extra for sure but the requirement of a quarterback to know the fixed protections the BR run game coordinator based on the calls you know to get us in different checks I mean there's so much they need to know and frankly. The only you know the only is good is the quarterback the receiver's only good is the quarterback the offense is the quarterback and it's our responsibility to put guys in position to maximize with the capable of maximizing but their inability to notice that they need to spend extra time outside the a lot of time I think is critical and the amount that it takes I guess I was maybe a little naive to but the guys are doing a great job doing it.
Just a couple more coaches got a meeting Rob all our Columbus dispatch Brian you get reach the mount up you got a banner out there national champs I think keep these guys grounded being in the moment looking ahead not back. Are you tougher on because no I think I mean I think we have a lot of guys you know I think it's understanding that we were trying to build the map to get to where you wanted to get to. But now that we have the map doesn't mean we've traveled the path so like we know what it looks like the guys that are here know what it's supposed to look like the guys before us stay unbelievable example how to get to where you want to get to. So the focus is on trying to replicate what they just did and how they operated can't say we've done that right now so it's very easy to stay motivated because they already know it's not good enough frankly and so the last thing they want to do is put in a ton of effort and then not just to get to the right. So I think that's a lot of effort and then not reach their goals so motivation I don't think is needed I think there is a catching up of those maybe aren't quite sure what it takes you know and but overall motivation is not what we've needed clarity of message is definitely what we've been focused on and I think the message is being received so not concerned about you know motivation and and the looking back if you will I think everyone's pretty pretty focused on being forward and known we haven't a good.
So Steve, who would you say is the leader of your wide receiver right now? I would say Cornell Tate Brennan and his probably done the most most outspoken you know in the room. Yeah I would say they're doing a good job those are probably the two guys that would jump out of my room yep. I mean just Brennan he's been in trouble obviously. Cornell taking on that role more and being more vocal he's a good football player obviously and he's going to do that but that process for him and becoming a more vocal leader took for you to say that upon him. What was the question? What do you think like the growth of it? Yeah I mean he's I think he's pulled guys aside you know it had one-on-one conversations with him. He's locked in you know just I think he saw the impact that a mecha made and the role he played and to think that you're going to lose that and then be a better group. Part doesn't mathematically make sense to him so someone's got to set up in that role and one and one respects him too.
He knows he's capable of it and it's just the desire and the appreciation I think to be at the table now and the overhead and appreciate the way I met the probably went about his business and so he probably valued that. Appreciate that and he's just being assured we still have that. Final question Bill Rebellion, what's the most distanced? Could you assess the running back room? I think it's pretty much assumed both is running back CJ and and a James think that's hand in system is probably the way you've got to go again. How do you think it's working and you see third and maybe fourth guys up in the mirror? I think that you know college football and a football any football really you got to have depth in running back room. I think that very apparent in the NFL it's usually a two back system you know very very rarely is it one guy. But in college I think we saw the benefit of that last year. The ability to compliment each other is really important and the ability for us to identify what they do great and put them in good positions to be what they are.
What they're best at I should say is really important as a coaching staff. It's been very impressed with even the younger guys Sam and and and bow and the way they've come along. Consistency so what you're chasing right you're always able to that's why you're here. But how often you do it ultimately dictates how much you play so but overall I think locks been on them they don't understand the standard and in pass pro and not being a guy we got to sell out because you can't pass protect so we were blessed. Especially with tray last year and and quencha on so but no these guys are going to a good job they're competing they've been very coachable. It's it's shown a blog on film but yeah I mean it's always hard on backs and every opportunity you get to go live and and break tackles really keeping the most feedback on what these guys are capable of. You're playing tag out there you never get any art at least you shouldn't but the running backs you know on contact days have done a good job James has done a really good job growing really excited about him everyone's really excited about him and CJ so you know I think ultimately how group the how will I'll go with the group be is probably based on you know the top the bottom rising right you're going to have some guys at the top but you know where's the floor and so I think.
Bow and Sam has done really good job and we need some more guys to get healthy more guys on campus but very encouraged. And you saw him improve and then McLean I think is a great plus I mean he is a guy that has football intelligence he's picked it up you know he's kind of of those incoming freshmen who still should be in high school he's a guy I think you're going to point to and you can see right now he's going to be a player. Over to the right Austin Ward the podcast a healthy Mitchell Melton how does he fit in for your defense what does he bring to it yeah he's you know Mitch is that combination player you know and in our four down you know he's a guy that can do a lot of things drop fold in there make plays you see some of that all the time really athletic you know we're kind of like a lot of things. We're kind of loaded at that position so he's going to play there but you know like I said last year we we haven't needed it but he's a guy you would point to along with C. J. H.
X you know for the for the long season people get injured you get a little light inside it's always hard on the defensive tackles but if you're going to play with three ends you know that matches a guy who definitely can do all that he has that. Over to the left Joey Kaufman Columbus dispatch Jim you talked about this before but I think in past years where you're going up against a really talented receiver group offense to encourage your players to it's not okay if they give up to the play and to go nearly almost the first half today where you the offense didn't get in the end zone till the late in the second half just and you guys have guys down the second area just what what did you think of that sort of trend and how it's evolved in the way you guys almost shut them out the first time. Yeah I think it's become you know an expectation now you know our DB's you know our BIA best in America we let the country in past defense right I think it was 96 what I what I got here and it was number one last year so they've taken that spirit so it's a competitive spirit it's an expectation now it doesn't matter who we're going against it's it's a good thing.
I think it's a good thing to see in the first first half over to the right Spencer Holbrook Vladimir and roll. Jim we've talked about safety changing the way that you play defense and the Leo and the linebackers but how much does having the depth that you guys have a defensive tackle change the way that you can do things defensively. Yeah I mean you're going to play to your strengths you know and that's that's my job is to what do we have and what do we do best and when you have defensive tackles and I've said it before it it helped our defense so much last year when you have defensive tackles that actually make tackles which is what we have right now it changes the way you call a game you know it certainly helps you be in back. In better shape on explosive plays on the back end you don't have to do a whole lot to help those guys out because they're making tackles so you got to go you got to go with that you know you got to let those guys play and and they're good so you can't get too far away from the scheme of having those defensive tackles make place because they're doing it and it works.
Over to the left Tony Gurdman Buckeye Huddle Jim Ryan talked about the quarterback run being more of a thing with the offense here during the season how much of when you're facing a team like that how much does that impact your day to day throughout the week preparing for that. Yeah it's a ton you know it I think it changes everything you do on defense you see it everywhere from the NFL on down if you have a quarterback who can make plays with his feet your scheme better be designed that you know to take that. Yeah you got to go and get that way into account for it so it changes the way you look at everything when you're game planning. Thank you Donovan over here to the right Tim May the Tim May podcast. Yeah Jim you might be the interviewer when I asked Ryan about just for example Calvin Simpson Hunt but the corner scene did you play in almost with the chip owner shelter to a certain way that Dave is a Nick Benoson took today personally it looked like you know to make is some of the height going into the game but what what do you see from that group in particular that. Who is you going into this off season.
Yeah when you can when you have corners that you can count on again just like having defensive tackles in the run game when you have corners you can count on that are going to compete all the time no matter what the situation is and we've developed that again it changes the way you call the entire game I mean you you're able to leave those guys on an island you're able to switch out couverges and they know what they're doing and they take great pride in it so having those guys out there in the development it's a big deal it really is. And it's not just a picture of the board I was giving it like I really like it. I mean he's he did come in late and you know he compete he's one of those guys that just competes every day doesn't say much you know he's trying to live up to the standard or the other guys and you you see him coming along you know you see him step by step coming along and and you know put him in a you know competitive atmosphere same step up that's a great sign.
And final question for coach Knowles Dan Hope 11 Warriors you mentioned CJ Hicks a few minutes ago have you seen him take the strides you need to see the spring to trust him as a guy who could be a potential starter on his defense. Yes I mean I think CJ has shown that he has talent and I think it's my job to put him in the best situations for him because he can be a force you know he's much better when he's bloodsaying or he's directed because he's able to use his athletic ability but he has certainly shown that he's going to be able to help this defense coach thank you very much for your time. All right and we will bring offensive coordinator and quarterback coach Chip Kelly to the podium now open up questions over to the left bill Rebenowitz Columbus dispatch. Chip what are your just general impressions of the offense coming out of spring especially quarterback.
We'll look at all 15 so I think you know this day is is a big part of it you know because it was the first time they were going to play some of those guys that were going to play in from the crowd. It was an amazing crowd you need to 80 thousand for spring game. Now you could see some of the young guys kind of looking around like wow this is different in the indoor but that's what they have to get ready to play it so. We got better from practice one practice 15 you know it's still an evaluation through the whole process but it's not something in the players to the will we're not making a decision walking off the field today saying hey this is the direction that we're going in we'll be very authentic and look through everything and make sure that we get a really good feel for what it all looks like and then who will best move this offense that's what our decisions can do. I do I think we got a lot of guys there that parts tough I think because you got you there's guys that deserve reps you know when they're all competing for it so you know sometimes you'd like to be sometimes when you had a guy who's an initial startable he's going to get the bulk of the reps to get them better but they capitalize on we really rolled them you know if you were at some of our spring practices you're watching all those guys rotate and rotate out and as we talk about all the time you know the old that is is don't count your reps make your reps count you know we'll put it all together and really come up with you know we're going to be able to do that.
So we're going to be able to do that with you know which guy do we really feel is going to make going to help us move this offensively over to the far right bill landis the podcast kings of the north. Hey Chip you some of me first talked to you that the the basis of a lot of your success running the football just kind of figuring out what your guys do best and then leading into that over 15 practices now how good of a field do you think you have for that and then what are the next few months look like as you try to piece that all together. Really good question it's it's interesting because the one thing that I think sometimes makes tough and evaluation is what a good front we want to get. You know so for 15 practices those guys on the other side of the ball were pain you know Jack and JT and Ty Lee can those guys but I know come fall there's not going to be anybody more happy that we have those guys on the defensive side of the ball because of what they can do so I still think we'll have to really evaluate that. What we're not what we got to get better at what we got to work on but I think the work we got against such a quality defense was really key for us over to the far left Nathan Barrett Cleveland dot com.
So you're going this time came out of the spring with still a lot of question marks about the offensive line and even I guess that last season came out with question marks when have you seen that progress in the time that you've been here and what's your confidence level that that offensive lines going to allow this offense to do everything it wants to do this fall. Yeah I mean I've been here short amount of time so I didn't know I really don't have anything to compare it to so I kind of tabula rassa come in with the blank slate and just observe it I think we're really athletic I think Donnie and Seth and those guys inside are really smart and really intelligent they allow you to to be able to make adjustments in game. Just talking football with some of those guys it's like well these guys are wired the right way and a lot of those guys have played a lot of football so they can bank on their experience there. I think we've got about four guys that have played significant amount of snaps and we've got to make sure we can find out who the fifth guy is but that's similar to where the quarterbacks body is I think. I also think of the offensive line you're not going to play a 16-17 game season and just playing with five guys you really have to develop your depth there.
There's going to be a number two center that's going to play a lot of football it's going to be a number two guard whether it's on either side of the ball there's going to be a third tackle I think you're going to get tested especially in this new playoff format you really have to think that way so you're not looking for five starters you're really looking for ten starters because you're going to have to probably play ten guys to get when you get through a 16-17 game season. Over to the right Austin Ward the podcast I think it was the first play of the game the T formation and then the reverse center spin move with Will Howard under what's the inspiration for that package and that sort of wrinkle with the quarterback. Mr. Hayes. There's a there's a looming figure around this whole program you know we get to go to work every day and the Woody Hayes athletic center so it was good enough for Woody we're going to stay with you we're going to do it we ran some last year I think we took 21 snaps at UCLA and T in a short yardage formation for us and we've done some different things with it but I also I think our players had a lot of fun you know practicing that and doing some different things so it's a small part of our offense you know we will not be in the T 21 times in one game but you know we may get it in some short yardage situations and I think it's come back there's a lot of schools right now that are starting to do that you know it's really just you're trying to you got a half a yard to get you're trying to get your big guys in the game and I think we use three tight ends and two running backs in our formation today with Packard being the
fullback in that situation so there's a lot of different things you can do in short yardage but a little bit of a tribute to coach coach Hayes and and what he means in this program. Joey Kaufman Columbus dispatch over to the left. Chip did you look back now even your two months 15 spring practices or something you feel best about what you've been able to accomplish with this offense? Well I haven't accomplished anything because I didn't take a snap but I think the most impressive thing since I've been here is how close close as football team is you know some programs talk about a brother this is really a brotherhood our practices as we talked about how good our defense is it's they're highly competitive but they're not coming back up and those guys really work very very well together both the whole line in the D line the seconder in the receivers the competition is the but it's got to be the best there is in the country you know and that makes you better. better but I think sometimes competition you know guys can lash out and it gets really combative and then all of a sudden the fight breaks out and the fight breaks out and we're trying to accomplish and get footballed on but I think the
way these guys cooperating work together as a group is a special bond and I think you're gonna need the closest team and the most connected teams on the ones that win. Over to the right here Andy Baxter, Letterman, or all. Jay Bobbys, there's been a lot of talk about Jeremiah but Amecha is the big return and this group he kind of reminded everyone what he can do today what's it been like working with him and what kind of weapon can he be for you guys. Good point and Amecha has reminded me and the other 14 practice sessions of what he can do. Special player you know and and J.J.'s a really talented player also but you know I think I think all of the whole group on Cornell tape did some really good things watching him this spring and for all of them you know I mentioned it with the offensive line I came in with a blank slate and I had no opinions formed not that really just wide-eyed and just observant but you know that I think that wide-receiving is really special and I think there's a bunch of guys in there and again you have to play multiple multiple games after the regular season is over you're gonna make sure you're gonna need depth like that and the fact that it's you feel a little bit comfortable right now that
we got some guys there that can make some plays in the perimeter and that really dictates how people are gonna defend you you know so you got a couple really good running back you know so are they gonna load the box or you're really gonna load the box and leave those guys in one-on-one coverage well then it's the quarterback's responsibility to decipher that and get the ball of those guys so or do they at least a double coverage they list a double coverage and now it's a little bit lighter box and you can run the ball so having too many weapons is a good problem to have second row left Pat Murphy 24-7 sports chip we've talked a lot about kind of the quarterbacks maybe vying for the starting spot but some of the younger guys what have you seen from them we got an opportunity to see more of them today than we probably have what's your assessment of them as they kind of get in this I always am so impressed with young guys that enroll early in watching how they get acclimated and what they do you know when you look at Julian and Aaron and JJ you know they should be in the hot lunch line of their high school and they're out here playing in front of
80,000 people and they've really progressed when you watch them in meetings and listen to them and they interpret you know so basically the whole concept through is we throw them in the deep end and see if they can swim you know this we didn't baby anything we don't put the install in with hey you guys are in stock we're an install this with the older players and then you guys you know go sit at the kitty table and we're just gonna do the really simple things with you you know they get it all and the more they can digest the more when you're in a room when you're checking for understanding and asking questions and they can spit back to you the more confidence you have when they get in there with the plays that you can call for them so those guys have been in process they're still learning you know they were the the guys today that we're kind of looking around and saying why there's like 80,000 people here along with the offensive coordinator in the quarterback coach because I was kind of looking around because I had actually never been in the stadium until yesterday when we had our 14th practice in there so I played Ohio State once when I was at Oregon but that was in the Rose Bulls I had never been actually in the
stadium until yesterday so I caught myself when I went into the stadium today looking around saying 80,000 for spring game that's impressive. Got time for just a few more folks over here to the right Dylan Davis Delaware Gazette. Given what you just said about throwing them into the deep end what's stood out the most about Julian's progression through 15 practices and where he is that you guys head out of spring. Julian is a very fast processor you know he really thinks very very quickly on his feet like he makes really quick decisions he doesn't stick on and read he can progress and any ceasing is really well for for a young player you know in not having been exposed to a lot of college defenses and especially what Jim does you know Jim can make Jim can make a young freshman quarterback cry with some of the stuff he does but you know I never saw that with Jules and I that's been in press of his his ability to retain and you know him and JJ the compliment I would say them is if you got
here and you didn't know what class they were and you wouldn't say that those guys are freshmen in terms of how they've picked things up and you know sometimes freshmen act like freshmen but the guys who are special they don't act like freshmen you know they act like their football players and those are two guys that are examples of that. Far left Cameron T. Robinson the athletic you on the topic of freshmen James people's exam got on the run the second half yeah you talk about how deep you need to be in this era college football but as you search for RB three what did you see from them today and what is what is their growth been like in the spring. Yeah James really flashed early for me not knowing again kind of let's just take don't worry about what the background is where they're from who they are the this guy of this stars that's guy of that stars it's they're all bakis and there's how they do and I think James has got really good field and vision he can hit things I thought Sam did some really good things today T.C. is another guy who really came along during the spring and in work constantly talking in our staff meetings about depth we're very
cognizant of the fact that the playoff situation has changed so you have to develop that depth you know used to be maybe have a pair and a spare is what everybody says but I think you may have to have more than that you're talking about 16 17 games you're you're really going to be tested that way so I was really happy with with how those young guys have come along you're in the 15 training sessions that we've had over here to the right Tim May the Tim May podcast thank you Jerry you have your own podcast yeah like these guys all have like a name next to their name okay yeah you're cool he must have some juice if you got you got your name in your podcast definitely okay I like it it's not just the lunch last hot lunch last night it's a hot lunch line yeah just two quickies number one do you feel compelled to lick these quarterbacks nowhere they stand here you know it's coming up Tuesday you know to me there yeah you know where does that go I mean in your mind yeah we're all sit down as a staff and visit me don't mind maybe he does an unbelievable job of I think all our
players understand where they fit and what what the picture is and we'll give him our assessment this isn't you know we're not gonna come back but we do it after every day they know where they stood after practice one after two after three after four we grade everything they're getting constant feedback in terms of where we are and then after 15 which we had today but but we we can't do it unless you watch the film and can can really look at the things because you may see something but you're on the sideline you know why did he make that decision well I couldn't really see the field safety from where he was okay now I understand why he made that decision so you know what what what the meetings with all our players and that's that's always been the method so this week during you know between Monday through Friday we're all scheduled no one's going on the road recruiting until after that but we're all a player meeting said every position you know offensive line defensive line linebacker safety is everybody everybody's gonna sit down with their position coaches and know where they fit and we see them but do you feel a pressure with with the transfer portal looming I mean you know you've been a head coach for a long time I mean is that on your mind at Tuesday yeah I think
I don't know where that I'm 100% and I don't think it's pressure but I think you just open lines of communication and everybody knows you know which what your evaluation was through the training sessions that we have guys we gotta have we got real quick at last two questions Dan Hope and then Rob Aller feel like you need to have a starting quarterback named by and whatever biggest things you're gonna be looking for between now and then and determining who that guy's gonna be well between now and and whatever then is we're not allowed as coaches to go back out and practice with him you know in college football you get 15 training sessions in the offseason and then they'll go back to work and with Mick in the in the weight room and getting bigger getting faster getting stronger they'll have organized activities themselves and they do a really good job of that but once there's a football out like we're not allowed to be there to evaluate and even assess so they're really from a football stamp on their own until August so you always want to do it earlier but I
also believe every time I've been involved in this is that it kind of happens organically and authentically you know because the players know if you say we decided we're gonna be with Joe and they all think it's Tim you know they know they're in the locker room with him every day players players understand you know who they'd feel is the guy and most of the time it the decision is very obvious you know when you just say this is where we are with it you know but there's that timetable thing I don't I can't give you an exact timetable on that so Rob chip you talk about Julian but typically in your experience you've done again like Tim said a long time long does it take for the game to slow down for a young QB I think it depends on the individual you know I've had some kids where early you know you're like wow Marcus Murray Odo was like that remember vividly second practice and he got to the fifth reading the progression and threw it out
here in his big game and I asked him why I do it all I asked why because I just want to understand it and I said why did you do that and he goes I don't know what we call that defense but there was like a lot of guys over there and they didn't seem like there was anybody over there but for him to process that that fight he was right and he came back the other day whether that was cover 60 other day coach like I learned what you guys call the coverages but it all happens differently I've got guys that for two years seem like they're just you know they're really struggling and then the light bulb goes off and you know whoa like they got it so everybody has different learning styles you know our job and the evaluation process is to identify those learning styles so you know they cognitive learn they an auditory learner you know do they do they learn by field is it is it more a field guy you know a more film guy you know it's all different and I think we have to keep poking and prodding and for us as coaches that's the challenge too is what is their best learning style and how can we convey it because education basically is just a transportation
knowledge but it really doesn't matter what I know or what Ryan knows it matters what they know so that's that's always kind of what we're working on and study and thinking about and kind of where we are and how much can they handle and then how much is too much you know because this may be a great play I agree 100% but if you don't feel it's a good play then then why is it in you know I mean and that's that's this whole feeling of process that we're all they're learning awesome we're learning them so I have identity so to coaches really running quarterbacks and something you've always sort of lean toward or is it year by year case by case what advantages do you like about because all your guys can run a little bit yeah I think a running quarterback causes problems for defense so when when plays break down the unscheduled plays you know if you just go back to the recent Super Bowl on that last drive the two big plays where my home's run the patch from home is another runner and he's not calling design
quarterback runs for Pat but when the defense matches up and plays two men and turns their backs to the quarterback well maybe the best decision is to take off you know the second one he took out I'm like he may score you know a lot of guys go and they want a hook side you know and and and there's times where you have to understand if you do have a running quarterback we talk about the best availability the best ability is availability you know you're not low on your shoulder and taking people on but we are always looking for quarterbacks that have the ability to run we're not looking for running backs that can throw you know so you're not going to see us 20 times a game we're running the quarterback there are people that run it offensive styles and are really successful with it but with this group we have right now that's not now they can hurt you with the feet will did it when he was at case eight you know obviously Devon took off a couple times today air took off a couple times today Lincoln's a really really good athlete Julian can run but you know we're not calling design quarterback runs you know you're not going to see you know I tremendous amount of respect for co-chase and the legacy that he left here this straight T as far as we go we are not going single wing so we are not going to snap it
and run quarterback ISO and quarterback power so but it is a it's another weapon you know and if it also keeps defense is honest you know three defense events going to continue to bend from the quarterback pulls it he's on the edge and he's gaining first downs well then the defensive end has to stay outside and contain the quarterback well then we can run the ball up and and hand the ball off sometimes in our running game our quarterback really is a blocker he's responsible for a defender if the defender was cheating and fitting it on the run well then his responsibility is to make make the defense be honest and and and that's really air did that a couple times today and we had a block that safety was sticking its face in there so we took off around the edge what happens in next play the defense is wider then what do we have to do we got a chance to handle ball off the running game coach thank you so much for your time and thank you for being a buck I was definitely addressed here you know this pretty easy I think Austin Sarah they'll stepped up in a big way you know with the thought of being out and and then you know you know Carson can can play both guard and center which is good and you know we've actually you know send us done a nice job as well but it was good to see
Austin you know he moved from guard to tackle a couple times and even with the ones he was in their battle in his tail off so I think we have built some depth there but again you know we got to go play some games and see what's the main thing you want to see out of the other you know again whether it's whatever happened last year's last year but I know that the message to our to our offensive line is we want to play I want to be the hardest playing offense line in the country now we've got to play with technique but at the end of the play like knock the line of scrimmage back and play with your hair on fire as hard as you possibly can there's a lot to go with the playing of the offensive line it's all communication there's a lot of things that have to get into place I think Seth has done a nice job of communicating and it's getting the offense better now takes control up front and brings everybody together which is great but but to me like that's it now we could list a bunch of other things but to me we've got to move the line of scrimmage we've got to be just playing with our hair on fire and knocking people back and playing physical and that's the start to game that's the end of game
now I don't see it that way at all I think you know we'll see what we got this year but I feel like you know we've got some really good young players in the system I think that you know we should have the best offensive line in the country that's that's the standard here has been for a long time and you know and so you know we'll keep pushing towards that this year and you know I think you know everybody in that room and play the same thing yeah so Sonny has really stepped up and played well he's made this transition from safety to linebacker very well I think he did a nice job in the spring but you could definitely see as he went into the the summer it just you know bigger stronger being more comfortable closer to line of scrimmage it's different when you're closer to line of scrimmage I was doing a better job getting his you know hands on you know on offense alignment and getting off of
blocks using a better job doing a better job with his hands and he understands the communication the linebackers always have to be involved at the front they can be involved and fit into the back end he's doing that you know I think he's you know looking forward to play playing in a game and you know getting an idea of what it all looks like but I can tell you in practice he's playing fast he's playing violent and I think he's you know he does a nice job of taking the meeting in the field being very intentional about his work but playing really hard yeah I haven't talked to Jim because you know we'll make that final decision here over the weekend but he's certainly leader in the club boss can you tell Ryan I mean Seth McLaughlin can tell he's been there done that is he as he projected that to the offensive line you're still and I'm saying for the leadership stand boy a grown man yes how does that just come up how does it show up a bunch of ways it just poise it's not getting rattled when you know coach parks at you
it's okay I got this let me get it under control it's seeing something in practice and being able to adjust on the move it's being prepared when you walk on the field it's recognizing how hard you have to play at the position it's kind of all of those things in the one but he's got great communication up front he talks to the guys he's moving quickly in there and when you have experience like he has you know the game seems to slow down at times yet he seems to be playing it fast lover and there was a point where he got a black stripe off and I feel like he took a step in the right direction when you come in in the summer it is very difficult to get on the field especially early in the season whether he does or not I will see but if he continues to practice the way that he's been practicing then
he'll give himself a chance to be in the rotation midway through the season or later in the season which is similar to some of the water series he had before you know you've seen some of those guys get some reps in the season but then make an impact later in the season I think that's probably more his path right now you know shows up and starts doing great and you know we'll you know we'll give him the reps he deserves or like Jeremiah is in a different situation because he came in here in January and he was a little bit ahead anybody who comes in and January to me I don't look at them as a freshman anymore they've been here they're in the program and we expect them to continue you still in there right there talking and communicating but in the
skirmishes we've had it's you know it's been offense very defense so I'm mostly been on the offensive side still kind of going through all those types of things and there's a lot to work through this year just with you know the play clock and then to what I mean that is you know the coast by a communication inside of 15 goes off just there's a lot of things that go on there we don't really get notification on that so I'm trying to you know just help chip with that and some communication that we're a person now but I'm going to very much involved with special teams I think with the two minute one there's some strategic things that are gonna go on game to half in the game that you know you never really be involved with but to your point just overall just looking guys in the eye making sure that you know they have to right looking their eye you know that you know they they understand you know with the situation what's going on in the game you know I think that happens sometimes in young players you know they're just like playing the next play you know and that's not just how that's not how it works we've got to win the situations and so all those things will come into play and making a game adjustments you know be involved with on all
free faces you know watching you know the game in a tab with the try to identify what happened the last series I think all those things will be happening right now Nick is gonna be the starter and you know that that competencies will go into next week but right now as we head into the weekend he is the starter and the plan is ready to be the first part of what we do on Saturday against soccer he's got a strong leg he's made it a good transition into the country but also just playing you know football and not Australian football which is very very different the you know snap to kick is really improved you know that was one thing he has he's a taller guy so the ball has to get out of this you know get out this fit faster I think he's done that his time time has been good and he's been more consistent you'll see you know he'll kick a few but just go right
out of the stadium and you just got a strong strong leg so we're looking for that consistency he's he's shown that here most recently so he's got the upper hand right now I don't know if it's because Will maybe took a little bit longer to make a decision in December of them some of the other top of the line quarterback to us because maybe there was a thought he wasn't going to be the starter at Kent State this year but it seems like people have been kind of as a game manager type of quarterback after eight months with them where do you see his ceiling of what what is Will special for you and where do you see him taking something I see you know a bunch of traits there I think the first trait of size is big you can stand in the pocket and he's strong so I mean that's the first thing you notice about him again whether it's standing in the pocket with boys I think that's another trait that he has that's excellent he he feels a rush but he stands right in there I think the next trait is just you know he's just top-end speed he can run 22 miles an hour
at that size which there's not a lot of guys who will do that so I think that's a extraordinary trait and I would I would say his overall leadership command and the huddle is is another you know something that he's he's really you know grown into in the last few months and he's been here and then his accuracy he's been very accurate since he's been here and when he knows what's going on and he can't to spell what's happening I mean it looks right his feel and he can hurt you know a bunch of different ways so yeah his ceiling that that's that's going to be kind of you know up to how he plays his season but you know I see a player who has a lot of great skills that you know translates well to the next level so we'll see but I know his first focus is on winning games around here hopefully I'm 10 right so bowl up the goal line and down to the Jackson plays meaning I'm nerves naturally the answer first come play that was good I was
rolling also it was also yeah you yeah it's like I prepared well and camp and practice all week and I was I was ready I did a lot I mean I couldn't ask them hey what we got here but I was prepared well I mean I was telling Jimmy and says like a way or blocks away I'll be emotional try to do it just that's a guide from Ohio what does it mean to start it it was always my dream to come here and play and start and having that like I just keep going keep building those days into games and keep building what a much younger Austin no I don't think even I told like me I asked my younger self even committing I wouldn't
believe that now having a couple of starts yeah awesome has this happened faster than you know I knew that year two I was gonna see you some playing time now starting week one year two I didn't see that but like I was ready in spring ball like I knew I was going I was going to play something but what does it mean to you to it's not only get the opportunity to play but like you play well enough now coaching staff trust you about there whatever the situation that so where we want to get to I guess it shows like my preparation my hard work and just everything I put into this and I just finally show up on field there are moments off season the end of the spring and I realized that you could play at this high level yeah the definitely was in training camp I mean blocking
highly can tie every day like it feels it feels a lot of confidence and doing it well and not like getting bald or anything so hero and Jason Moore and Taiwan all those guys pretty much anyone on the deepened morning gets a lot of time so and came back as well so yeah he helped me a lot and I'm proud that he's our starting center not someone else's but I mean he's like the captain of the line he's another voice on the line with guys like Josh Fry and Josh Simmons dining Tiger that means another voice and another captain not the look ways of having that and I'm with this much experience help me a lot he can tell you like before the play was going on like how to block someone like
we need to do it and like helps a lot you're talking about how calm it is how much is that better you have a guy who's kind of been there and it makes us us more calm like especially me and Dave let's first start so like we were up here with what's said like he brought us down I mean we were like fine like our emotions weren't high we settled in is that like something he tells you is that something you pick up on by how he's acting how do you kind of mean sense what he's trying to say about how he's acting and what I mean him when we're on the side of him both Josh Donnie like he was telling us like a cool like we got it but it's pretty much like everyone old cool group how much do that as a first time starter how much of the end that mean a lot that was my first time ever using high pads we didn't use the iPads in high school but I mean you can say like try to remember the defense you can just come on a silent bring up a plane to help the first
or second after that I thought we say oh seven great awesome thank you very much that's probably a part of me settle again to go that's um I would I want to say maybe I don't know but I mean when I when I first heard he got the job I was really excited because I'm one of those guys who's the tempo I can run with the tempo you know I mean I'm I'm playing basketball all I can set up football and I feel like just the fast pace often so we're running really fits the guys we have right now I'm really excited for that I know you can throw a football like 65 guys but can you kick a football 75 yards a quick? Lincoln what was your question? How is your your room after you? He's a blessing man I can't complain he's a great guy what's his name? His name's Lincoln. Teen hoes. Oh he's cleaner I think we're both really clean that's why we kind of picked each other's roomies because we're very clean and we don't like our burdens really messy.
Well it's true though it's true it's a real pretty clean song. Luke are you still a cross-training attack or some or if you just been off guard this break? Oh so far I've been all guard I really don't know like I said I'm taking it back to the practice I practice I can't end up being back attack like that and I'm just really focused in on this past practice and the next thing. Yeah that mean a lot you know you put a lot of work in to play here and spend a dream just for being in Ohio kid is from a Ohio kid's perspective that's I mean that's the biggest switch possible I would say that's that'd be pretty cool. What was it like last year post game getting on the field for the first time? I didn't like that this is gonna be a weird answer but I feel like I was playing a game you know if that makes sense I was pretty locked in I felt like just no anxiousness no stress no nothing really I just went in that first game was like shoot I'm here now it's time to roll you know they didn't really hit me I was like it didn't hit me I felt like I want to like what you feel there and if like get out there at the end of it just like honestly
I don't know I felt less nervous that I'm in high school and it makes no sense. I mean I'm learning from Josh Ann Austin I think prior to my biggest role model series my bigger big brother my first major. I'm a PD and I'm a PD okay yeah no yeah so yeah PD and Austin those are my guys man I'm even even Miles too I mean all three of them that's those are my roommates and they're progressing every day as well and I'm excited to see where they where they can get to on the side of the planet field. Oh yeah you know it's been really helpful you know just keep in my mind just settled and straightforward on the next blood. What is the biggest? It's a great question like I said I mean I just need to take consistent in my work I think that's the biggest thing for me is just ain't consistent I'm worried about the next blood. I mean I think the next is another big one you guys started turning out the 10 plus
year difference did it be off each other? Absolutely I mean when you see the defense and you see the defense start arguing with each other and things like that I mean it doesn't make some allowbies here you know have those kind of 11 plays around something. What was that like? So I suppose you started dealing with your family in the first game I was good quite good mom all day and they were on to the second match. I mean it feels good to rip off these runs because I mean we put them so much work on those interactions and you know seeing the mother and her work. Tech reserve since this offensive line wise is you'll prepare this week with Donald and back in there they cover hope for some really good this season. It's not for taking Austin it's just more of Donald Jackson pretty seasonal American etc. I mean John and the Jackson is a very good football player when he's on the field he matches present stuff. I mean we've all been training on my home. There's no tomorrow just going to move and you know we know it can be.
The other seat to be there's a six watching you guys. No or even more of a force. It felt like watching you guys. Maybe even if you feel like that. Yeah I mean we put in the work during practice we practice really hard coach day really challenges the practice hard. Positions coaches really challenges the practice hard. I was just a result of it. When it's grown up like that what does it feel like being in the mix of everything? It's awesome. It's awesome. When you work hard for something and you're able to see like what comes out of it like that's there's no better feeling than that. No I mean I was really funny to see. What has Seth been off from practicing for the first of the games?
What's it been like playing XNN for the last two? You know he's really calm and you never see real panic and having a guy like that met you and you know you're having really played as many meetings for snaps. There's no one outside the other apps in my left and some in the right. For our handset. Those guys they do so much for this offensive. I mean people talk about his intelligence really kind of showing up in the film or then on the field. Where have you noticed that intelligence and how has that helped you? Yeah like I said in crunch time you know when things are exactly like how we practice it you know having a guy like that that will slow down. We'll do this this this and then we execute having a guy like that like this. There's none better than that.
Yeah those guys there are real players. They're real players and so they coach well you can sell them. They go hard you know they're real players over there. We've been practicing to the best of our goldies and you know inspector and I'm prepared for that. Yeah they play good ball over there and you know their defense plays hard. They challenge teams you know sometimes they might be overlooked and they still challenge teams you know. You can sell they come out there with the mentality like no matter where you're in front of the show. I mean the actions right there right in front of you right now which is kind of a good
thing and kind of a bad thing. You should off the rest you know hitting back in inside. You probably was very strong. Yeah I mean I hear from Chris every once in a while trying not to bother him too much but it's always it's always.
