2:02You come off of a disappointing loss like last night and a quick turnaround and early puck drop once again, but I think the difference for me was not being able to extend the leads when they got them and I thought that the first time they were up one nothing and then the ducts tied it up but when they were up one nothing had the chances couldn't extend the lead and then credit I mean you get a power play goal you regain the lead but again just weren't able to extend so you know they're able to score in this one but it was the fact that they weren't able to extend but I would credit Lucas Dostol he was absolutely outstanding in this game. But I also think back to like the wide open net that Matt Coronado had that he ended up missing so some chances that feel like the flames they should have and needed to bury to extend the lead when they had it and then I mean the ducts you get into over time with them they're super fast

3:03super skilled obviously and then the shootout like those were three just absolutely ridiculous moves almost on the fair yeah right but there's the skill on full display and just a ton of confidence from some young players as well so tough one for the flames but I mean you come away on this road trip three games in four days and you come away 500 you got to be a little bit happy with that and what a performance from Devon Cooley his first game since Feb 4 he was outstanding well and maybe that's maybe I'm leading you in we'll see where are you going for hardest working flame tonight Mick well you're pretty close okay I'm going to give him an honorable mention yeah I thought he did an excellent job coming in it had been a long time since he played once again comes in on the second half of a back-to-back with no morning skate but was sharp in this one that's for sure but I'm going to give it to Joel Farby it's sort of a really nice goal but I just thought he was a thorn in the duck side especially early on more so ended up playing 20

5:12country hills Toyota we were looking at Devon Cooley getting the start in net and his first start as we talked about since February 4th he played the last game for the flames before they hit the Olympic break he was great in that game against the Edmonton Oethers and he was great again tonight boy have the flames gotten outstanding goal tending from their Northern California duo of wolf and Cooley since they came out of the Olympic break wolf was outstanding on Thursday and Saturday win and a loss and then Cooley outstanding here tonight look I know that there is a lot of talk about losing games and finishing lower in the standings all those types of things I will say the flames have got two really good goal tenders right now that's just going to up Devon Cooley save percentage if I do my quick math he came in with a nine twenty one and he makes thirty five on thirty seven tonight and that is good for a nine forty six so his save percentage will go

6:15up after this game tonight he robbed players in all three periods he was great in overtime and then a really really strong performance even in the shootout I mean what are you going to do on the Leo Carlson maybe bit a little too hard this is super nitpicking from the non goalie expert by the way I'm just saying that if you want to be super critical maybe bit a little bit too hard on the Leo Carlson shootout attempt glove save on the center cut through the legs and then I don't think any goalie is stop I mean what McTavish did there was ridiculous and still had the presence of mind to go five hole like I don't know how you're putting that on anything other than a ridiculous skill on Mason McTavish so I thought it was an outstanding game from Devon Cooley and and I think you're in a good spot if you're the flames to use them both very very evenly here

9:20we were better tonight I thought we played with more urgency you know there's a few shifts early on the game were on the standing on the bench you're wondering how it was going to go but I thought we had a lot of guys that played hard tonight and could have just as easily easily got the extra point tonight guy like Joel Farahby kind of gets engaged really right from his first shift of the game is that kind of a situation where when a guy gets engaged and maybe kind of feels himself taking a hit and then making a play happen early in the game does that kind of carry over is is the game progressed I think so but I look like in Joel's situation I look at more about him dragging people into the game after the first few shifts so he started moving his feet he got some chances to score he finished a hard hit in the corner and I felt he started to whether the the bump on the goalie or whatever it is like he drags some people into the game tonight and that's what we need more of like that's what I'm trying to get at is the day I thought we had a lot of guys that played with much more urgency that you have to have if you want to win especially on the road let's talk about the role the goalies played on this road trip both excellent like you know

10:26the game in San Jose Dustin was our best player and I would say the same thing again in LA unfortunately we didn't finish on the opportunities that we had there for him tonight Ghouls gave us the same chance like he made some great saves for us so it's nice when you have two goal tenders that you know that whoever's in the net they're going to do what they can do to allow our team to stay in games and then it's got to be up to us to find a way to generate enough to win some of these for them and I'm assuming you're not worried like it's been over a month since he played and you know there's got to be some coaches wondering how's the goalie going to respond to his first action a long time yeah he handled it well I mean when you know he's you could tell his puck touches were a little off tonight I think that was a bit of an adventure form but other than that he looked he looked really well in the net and there you go that is head coach Ryan Husker post-game following a flames three two shootout loss really good performance from Devon Cooley let's hear from him as well as he also just wrapped up on the road in Anaheim Devon obviously disappointing to not come away with the extra point tonight but just in terms of your

11:29team's performance and what can you say about the work you guys as a whole did yeah I thought we were really good we generate a lot of chances they're going made some really really good saves like I thought we could have scored five goals out there tonight and I think if we keep playing like that like we're going to get the result majority of the night so it's unfortunate to not come away with the two points but I thought we did a really good job and put ourselves in a really good spot to to earn those two points I think you made seven saves in the first four and a half minutes of the first period when you're coming off not seeing any game action for as long as it's been for you better part of a month is that kind of a way that you can kind of feel engaged right off the hop yeah I actually felt really good in warm-ups I felt really good right away I just felt like like rested and my head was really clear I had a lot of energy and I think that translated into the first like five ten minutes and got to see a lot of action and I felt yeah I felt really good and have any like nerves or anything and I think I kept it going for the rest of the game and yeah there's maybe the chances you faced in overtime obviously we're the busier the two

12:33goal tenders to get it to the shoot out but you know what did you see particularly on the centica play where he's charging at you and then the powerplay at the end of the frame yeah me and Wolfie were talking about it I kept throwing out the polt check and I don't know why because I have it in my notes never throw out the polt check avoid the polt check because I am not very good at it and I threw it out probably like eight times and I don't think I make contact with it once and so I have no idea why did that they almost burned me in overtime with it and then I think I could have used it in the shootout actually I think it would have been a really good move and that's when I didn't use it so that's that's unfortunate but our pk was great in the last like 25-30 seconds I just had to make that one save you know and then we had some looks to we had some great looks again they're going to make some good saves and I thought it was just a really back and forth game it was it was a lot of fun playing I'm always curious when a guy comes in as slow as mectavished it if goalers start to say come on at some point we can't that guys come in that slowly does that bother you I was love you know how they have in baseball they have the pitching clock I would

15:48well underway we are underway from our downtown studio it's past time with you on apple Spotify amazon seeker or wherever you get your podcasts live right here on sports net 960 the fan the phone lines are open at 403 240 44 44 the text line open at 9 69 60 we'll get to both here very very shortly I thought the flames played hard have their opportunities to extend their lead about both gold tenders were outstanding doast all at one side cooling on the other there were some really good individual performances from a Calgary standpoint really liked really like not some cadre tonight I thought cadre was dynamic I was the only guy to score in the shootout I thought he was just all over it offensively thought he was a real tone center and a kind of potster once again was probably Calgary's best player I thought he had himself a really really strong game and I thought his line looked really good and I loved mott v gridden again I thought

16:50gridden was outstanding and on his 20th birthday that close to picking up points like that pass he made on the power play to Coronado should have been a goal wasn't but that would have been a primary assist had a couple of other opportunities where he could have picked up points looked really dynamic on the power play and came this close to extending the shootout as well had the right move had everything right just the execution post instead of the mesh but gridden was a really impressive player I thought tonight as well now that is one former 19 year old now 20 year old who was in the lineup that being gridden very recent 19 year old yesterday was 19 the other was not that is zane perreq and I know there was a lot of debate and discourse which which I jumped in on on social media with a few of the the real prolific some of the real prolific flames tweeters and opinion opinion givers I don't even know what what I would there's a better word for it but just

17:55with some some really active flames fans on on social media got into the conversation with honestly wasn't even a debate I just was look I'm not and I wasn't trying to dunk on anybody or anything like that it's it's not that I just think it's important on the perreq front to underline what the reasoning is here so number one I've been told a couple times now like hey get ready perreq's going to be in the lineup Tuesday and for that homestand playing zane perreq and giving him a boatload of minutes or a boatload of games is is one of the priorities especially after the trade deadline on Friday however the really relentless schedule of March and into April is also something the flames are taking into account and and I know that people don't agree with this and and that's fine but

18:59the the biggest worry is right now not about perreq making defensive mistakes not about whether or not he's ready for this level it's not about that at all the biggest concern is about perreq's frame and physical ability to stand up to the physical wear and tear of this time of year with the schedule as it is and I know people like well he just had X amount of time off has nothing to do with it third game in four nights they feel like not putting perreq through the wear and tear of that third game in four nights and the second half the back-to-back will have a more positive outcome for his recovery and that recovery and not subjecting him to that extra wear and tear that a body with a little bit more physical maturity has and is able to stand up to is important and the flames are are essentially going about this as they feel like if they strategically

20:06rest perreq here and there 26 games is what remained coming out of the break and he's played two sat one I bet he'll play at least the next three if not more after that but strategically resting him for two three four five games down the stretch they feel like playing him 21 of 26 is better in the long term than playing him every night for eight nine ten in a row and then having that wear and tear catch up and sustaining an injury that he is more prone to because he's been playing and and dealing with that they they just feel like the strategic rest is better in the big picture for their number one prospect and and you you I guess you can disagree with that but it's hard for me to be too critical about that line of thinking when it's all about protecting

21:09their number one asset and and gridden is different gridden is more physically mature and ready to stand up to the wearing tear of this schedule than perreq is and and that's fine I know they're essentially the same age but people's physical maturity doesn't go in a linear progression everybody's different and so that is what sitting him tonight was all about there is a plan in place you can agree or disagree with that plan if you want but this was always going to be the case on the third game and four nights and I bet you on the next back to back he probably sits that game as well and probably two or three more other games this year again it's a big picture play because they want to avoid the injury that knocked him out in November they want to avoid a routine play

22:11turning into a two or three week injury because the wear and tear had caught up to perreq's body and again they feel like 21 of 26 being strategic is better than 13 of 26 because he got her that's where they're coming from you're not like hey and and I'm not trying to convince you not trying to win an argument that's just where the flames are coming from and it's just hard for me to be too critical of that line of thinking anyway that's where we are on the perreq front betcha dollars the donuts he's back in on Tuesday night against Dallas and if he's not that'll be a little bit more critical if he does not play against the stars then I didn't that silly he should be back in on Tuesday night everything that I'm led to believe is he will be but if he's not then I'd be more critical of that because then we're talking about maybe something a little bit different any more on that on the text line and the phone lines very

24:15Shanehomes.com for details okay let's get to the text line for the first time tonight this says what is a trade to Colorado worth for Calgary and Lamberg I do not know I honestly do not know the answer to that question I do not know what you're going to be getting for Calgary if they end up making a trade I think it might be a little bit less than what some people are thinking and are hoping but I also don't think it's going to be a negligible return I just don't know what it's going to be it's hard to put a real ballpark on it I don't have a good feel as to what the asking price is like I have a pretty good feel as to what the asking price is on Coleman and that's first round pick or equivalent something close to that I think the flames will make the deal and if they get that from multiple different teams maybe you see if you can get just a little bit more to to make that deal I just it's a whole lot more difficult from what I've tried to do to get a feel on

25:20that on the cadre front and then Lamberg in there I don't know Lamberg I think at best if you make that move gets you away a mid-round pick and I think that you know if you can get a I don't know if you'd be able to get a third round pick but if you could you probably make that deal if it's a sixth or a seventh round pick you probably don't make that deal especially knowing how vocal Ryan Lamberg's been about wanting to stay here so I what what it's worth to Colorado I honestly don't know that question that is not me trying to skirt it I just I actually don't have a good answer I really really don't and I feel like it's better to just say you don't have a good answer than trying to make one up in a case like that um this from John who says one game for all the barbels you win you get the number one pick lose you get number two who do you have a net wolf or coole for me it's coole says John for me it's wolf um and and really with no disrespect um doesn't

28:26all come into it why gridden's fine and and why they feel that way about Perrek and and maybe not so about gridden and by the way I don't think that the uh I don't think that it doesn't apply to gridden either I think they're monitoring it with him as well and if he sits out at some point don't be surprised between now and the end of the season Ryan Huska has hinted at that a couple of times to that gridden might have to sit uh here and there again for the same reasons not because it's performance and again and and I had um I think it was a knitwood school on twitter who was saying it sounds like you're just blanket defending the coach this is not a coaching decision this is a top-down organizational decision this is Conroy this is Huska like this is a organizational plan not this is Rick Davis the the strength and conditioning coach uh this is um this is Kabelka the the um had athletic therapist like we're talking about everybody he's involved in this and

29:31that's why it's so hard for me to criticize Rick Davis and Kent Kabelka are some of the best in the world at their field they're not doing this just for fun they're doing this based on their decades and decades of knowledge that I don't have and so when Kent Kabelka who's hockey Canada's number one go to and when it's Rick Davis who turns 110 pound people into 140 pound adonises like yeah I'm I'm kind of gonna lean towards their expertise over what I know about things and so that that's kind of where we are on the uh on the correct front even on the grid in front when it comes to we we use the term load management it's not about fatigue it's not about being tired it's about the wear and tear that an NHL game puts on a human body and some bodies are more

30:33it's the exact same reason why Anaheim didn't do it with Carlson they felt he was too slight and not physically mature enough to play 82 games and so they it doesn't matter that he played 55 and Perrex only gonna play X amount it is the toll that it takes on a body night after night after night and that doesn't matter if you've played 15 games prior or if you've played 35 games prior three games and four nights is a lot for a frame that is not quite ready that is the important thing that's what this comes down to whether you agree with it or not but I just I think it's important to continue underlining that point uh this from Mike and Mackenzie Lake say it with me patty celebrate the wins embrace the losses very entertaining game tonight it'll be great to see the boys back at home this week question for you was that Codre's last goal as a flame well it doesn't actually count as a goal because a shootout goal but uh no I don't think so um

31:38I think Codre's playing on Tuesday um A the flames have not been sitting guys were the last number of years for trade reasons whether you like that or not B I'm still not I'm still not overly convinced that Codre's gonna be moved like again I'm like 50 50 maybe a little bit less than 50 50 that he gets moved obviously there's a chance um I just think that it's a you know coin flip that it happens whereas I think you can count on a guy like Coleman getting traded right uh Murray says totally agree with you on Cooley and Wolf splitting games the rest of the year they're both playing well and if manage right they could have one of the best goalie tandem in the league down the road I get the correct thing too he still looks like a skinny kid out there he's got all the talent just needs to bulk up so he doesn't get injured anyway I guess one is better than two but it's hard to cheer against these boys a high pick still would be awesome um this says Pat loved the amount of ice time at Lambo got today I have a question about Jersey retirement

32:45can Codre's Jersey get retired and would the flames do that would the flames consider retiring any other players either active or retired and who do you think it would be well number one yes they can retire Johnny's Jersey posthumously um and I think they will and should uh put number 13 in the rafters I don't know if there's any question in my mind that they should and I'm quite certain they will uh I just think you know the timing you want to you just want to make sure that um the timing is respectful to the family and and um all of those types of things but yes I think they they can they should and I think will other players that should be retired well like I still think they've kind of done away with forever a flame and I think in hindsight forever a flame was was probably not what they needed to do I would I would be all for retiring to in 25 um McKinnis and new and Dyke you know I know there's a lot of

33:50controversy around flurry but flurry's 14 is one of the best in franchise history uh I I certainly I would say this right and I've got a very good relationship with deal I don't agree with many of the the political uh side of things but from a straight hockey standpoint 14 probably does deserve to be up in the rafters as well but the question was about 13 and Johnny Goodrow uh I do think that um I do think that that's a guy that that should have his jersey retired down the road uh wedley and bridalwood says solid road effort for a back-to-back I feel for Cooley uh I do as well Cooley played really well tonight uh Dan says please god let this team sell on Coleman before he enters the final year of his deal Dan I I think that will happen so I don't think you'd worry about that uh Bert in McKenzie Lake this one stings a bit but not nearly as much as that one game a week ago it was good to see the boys generate a little more offense tonight though there's still plenty of work to be done as for the deadline I mean either Pahal or Hanley moves

34:53along with Coleman Codry likely stays until the summer and I'd keep Weeger and White Cloud as part of the core Lamberg absolutely needs to stay and resign his energy and presence just too valuable and it showed again tonight finally credit to Cooley as he was a big reason the flames were still in this one as my guy Mike says and I'll stand by it celebrate the wins embrace the losses that comes from Bert um this from Ash who says regarding Lamberg I personally think it's a no-brainer to resign him to me he's one of the top fourth line players in the league and arguably won't block any flames prospects or Wranglers from making the team since they're all aiming for top nine rules anyway furthermore I've always believed the traditional approach of having a veteran lead in fourth line finally I'm really struggling with Perseverance deserving an eventual recall when he isn't producing with the Wranglers the way correct it thoughts on any of this I generally agree on Lamberg I mean selfishly I'd like him to stay um if you're not getting great returns for him or or offers I don't think you need to force a deal there I'd be all I'd be all good if

1:16:59preck is not ready to take on the rigors of three games in four nights that is the definition of load management so when we say it's load management it's because it's load management that's exactly what it is and it is the exact same philosophy as Leo Carlson it is the exact same thinking as what they have done with players in the NBA what they are doing with player pictures specifically in baseball and what the ducks did a few years ago with Carlson it is the exact same thinking and the exact same motivation and Carlson playing 55 games over an 82 game schedule is because they were strategic throughout so like he didn't play an entire summer and yet they were resting him in October like what is the difference here it's all about the big picture Audrey anyway I'm not upset I just like I understand what they're doing and they've come up with this with far smarter

1:18:08people than I am this is this is about avoiding injury and derailing his season even more than has already been stunted and in the big picture resting him strategically here and there they feel that it is going to reduce the chances of him sustaining an injury on a routine play like he sustained again Chicago a number of months ago and that helped derail his season they don't want that to be the case and regular action with strategic games out in the final stretch of the season they feel and I under like I agree that's better than playing him him getting hurt because the body wears down and then he misses three weeks that's what they're trying to avoid anyway great stuff on the text line tonight and let's get back to the phone lines a couple more phone calls
