POSTCAST: Giants Return Favor, SLUG Six Homers Off Mets Pitching

San Francisco returned the favor hitting six of their own this afternoon as the Mets offense, sluggish, Zach Thornton had a rough start and they see their winning streak snapped at two. The San Francisco Giants followed that recipe in the second game of this series. We'll talk about Zach Thornton's day. Why even though it was his worst start to date, not overly concerned about Zach Thornton going forward. AJ Ewing hitting his first home run in a couple of months. Hopefully he can finish this season off on a good note. And the Mets had a chance in this game. We'll talk about that seventh inning rally that came up short but we'll jump right into it. The story of this one, Zach Thornton on the mound and to date the worst start of his big league career. This is what you'll be talking about.

2:05Give you the numbers and then we'll break down the performance and I'll tell you why I'm not overly concerned really two reasons why I'm not overly concerned about Zach Thornton and how rough of a start it was today. Five innings seven hits the six earned runs for home runs. That's this that you circle and you go that's the thing that needs to be cleaned up. Thornton saw his ERA shoot up to 3.53 in this one. Why am I not concerned about Thornton? He did give up the four home runs. It's kind of leaving some stuff over the heart of the plate. You don't love giving up a pair of homers to the number nine hitter and Christian costs. Devers is having a great season. Him having a big day shouldn't be that much of a shock but he has two homers as well. You're way more upset about giving homers up to the to the nine hitter than you are giving them up to Raphael Devers but two reasons why I'm not worried about Zach Thornton with a picture who doesn't have overpowering stuff. How many times have we discussed this after a Zach Thornton start right.

3:16He pitches to contact. He's got to trust the guys behind him to make plays. He's not going to be somebody that overpowers you and strikes out a tunnel. He did have six strikeouts in this game and struck out the side in that fourth inning. He is somebody that like a David Peterson. This is the guy we compare him to because the most recent example of a lefty met starter that had a similar repertoire similar approach. You have these types of performances. So it's not the sirens going off. This is unfortunately I think what you have to expect with a guy like Thornton unless he sees a growth in his stuff unless he is able to more consistently add some life to that fastball. You're going to be able to develop another pitch that allows him to get some more swing and miss when the ball gets put in play against you. You do run the risk of the luck going against you. One of those cost home runs that got out felt like it just got caught in a jet stream in a wind stream up there and just kept carrying and carrying and carrying.

4:16That's going to happen. You're going to have days like that when you are a pitcher that relies on the ball being put in place. So that's why I'm not overly concerned because I think part of what comes with the territory of Zach Thornton being in your rotation is that there's always a chance for this to happen. The other reason why I'm not overly concerned is this is the first really bad start that we've seen from Zach and I think everything up until this point he has earned the benefit of the doubt to see how he responds to see how he takes this how he adjusts from this how he goes back and looks at how did I give up these four home runs, how did I give up these seven hits, how did I give up these six earn runs and him and Justin Willard and the met's coaching staff comes up with a plan for when we see Zach Thornton again. And I'll add a third little caveat to it. Everything kind of went sideways for Zach after he took that ball off of his arm. And so I wonder how much of that played a role again not giving him an excuse the results are what the results are, but for somebody who has not had a performance like this at all up until this point.

5:19I am willing to lean more towards the benefit of the doubt and give you a one off right give you that Mulligan and we'll see what it looks like the next go around for Zach. So again, with the type of picture that he is unfortunately this is one of the outcomes on the range of outcomes that could happen when you are reliant on the ball being put in play. Two, his first real bad start, let's see how he responds before we get overly panicky about Zach Thornton long term. There's way more good on the resume than there is bad. And three, I do wonder how much the ball going off of his arm ultimately impacted him because a lot of the stuff in this game happened after that moment early on in this one. Yeah, Ricardo on the YouTube side of things saying it is a bad start. It happens that I think is the perfect framing for Thornton. There has been so much good up until this point. I think it's fair to just say didn't have his best stuff today left some stuff over the heart of the plate. But now I want to see how he responds to it. This is going to teach me a lot about Zach Thornton and you know we keep talking about what September should be about what the post deadline should be about for the meds.

6:27And it's kind of moments like this right because now you get to to test Zach a little bit. Okay, you had a bad start. How do you respond. And while it's still being we talk about the low pressure environment around this team right now where wins and losses. They don't really matter. And so this is an opportunity for Zach to take that next step and grow mentally as a picture to bounce back and show the fortitude to show his ability to get right back out there in five or six days. And I think it's the Yankees that's next up for Zach if if the pitching matchups if it goes through the way we expect it to that's the next time that we'll see him how does he respond in that environment actually looking forward to that excited about what that may bring other pitching notes was a rough outing for Jeffrey Yahn two innings. The two runs allowed over his one inning of work that ERA is north of five and a half now and it has been a rough last couple of outings in general for Jeffrey Yahn is giving up a run in now four consecutive outings and earn run in four consecutive outings.

7:32That's something to monitor here he is going through a bit of a rough patch and yeah the vinsky gave you two solid innings that I thought was the moment where the match were kind of waving the white flag in this one but the vinsky actually gave him two scoreless innings and kind of kept them and set up what was that seventh inning rally speaking of the offense we'll talk about AJ Ewing having a big moment in this game early giving the mets a lead. And we will talk about where this game went sideways for the mets a seventh inning rally where they could have made this a game and unfortunately they did not fully cash in we'll talk about that here on the other side. Against Hagenman in that ninth inning but let's talk about the the bats in this one five runs five hits was kind of a sluggish afternoon in general.

10:08For the metz in this one probably the biggest takeaway offensively AJ Ewing going yard is first homer since I think it was July middle of July beginning of July for AJ Ewing so it definitely feels like a corner has been turned for AJ was going through it. Got a couple of days off comes into the lineup today is able to to go yard in this one right didn't play in the finale. Oh no did play in all three games in the Tampa series but got the day off on Thursday did not play in the opener last night broadcast mentioned two days off about there were two games in there but off the on Thursday didn't play in last night's game in place today and then he gets himself the big homer at the time giving the metz a two to one advantage. So after really kind of going through it it's five hits in his last four games some home runs in there as well obviously the homer today the extra bass hit in Houston so maybe perhaps AJ is kind of turning a corner a little bit not all the way there not fully ready to say that he is is all the way back but starting to have some performances that make you think that he could be turning a corner speaking of turning a corner let's talk about the turning point in this game because just to say that he's not going to be a corner of the corner.

11:23This game because despite the final score line despite the metz going into the bottom of the ninth down nine to three there was a real legitimate chance for them to threaten in this game time to reveal where the game was once or lost it's the turning point was the seventh inning a rally that I put in the title or in the thumbnail over their fall short it really never got started right Jared young gets a single multi hit game for Jared young by the way. And so that's the way that the game is at the plate and Francisco lindore grounds out so two chances there with Alvarez and with lindore to put something into the gap to really get back into this game and unfortunately the only thing that they were able to do was draw the walk from Bati right Alvarus swings it ball four so if Alvarus walks in Bati walks now you're talking six four changes the complexion a little bit of how the giants are going to approach it how they're going to use their

12:51the only thing you're able to get is that Bati walk and I think the fact that you're going to look back on and say man that was the mischance was you and draws the walk you load the bases Alvarez does a good job working in it back to a full count but then swings it ball four can you imagine if after a walk to you and you walk Alvarez you walk in a run it's six to three there's only one out in comes Bati they didn't have a left the up they went to a righty to face Bati so it would have been all the momentum would have been tilted towards the metz in that moment but unfortunately the strikeout kind of gives the giants a pathway out yeah they give up the walk but they know that a ball in play is probably going to get them out of the inning and unfortunately that was that was all she wrote the sabbe hit a home or in the eighth made it eight to three and then McCray got one off a haganman in the ninth to make it nine to three Bati did add the double in the ninth to get the metz on the board but it is that seventh inning really where things went south for the metz they had a chance six to two Alvarus doesn't swing at that pitch you really got something to do

13:51and going with Bati at the plate but unfortunately not the case and you know you look at a game the metz lose nine to five and you see the top part of the lineup bench over four but shed over four won Soto over four lindore over five none of those guys on base in this game not even drawing walks so really tough to win you saw it last night with lindore hitting a homer but shed hitting a homer the power at the top of the lineup well today it was over 17 from the top four guys in your lineup with five strikeouts in there just not a recipe for success so a rough start for Zach Thornton the first one he's had in his big lead career and an offense that they they did a little bit throughout the course of the game but it was almost a case of two little too late after the two one lead Thornton gives it up you missed the chance in the seventh Bati does get you a little bit on the board in the ninth but it was too little too late in this one as metz five hits drawing just four walks in this loss one more in this series with the San Francisco Giants and it will be tomorrow afternoon Christian Scott going for this metz team to try to secure a series win and let's see what Christian Scott is able to do it has been interesting in the month of August four Christian a six oh four ERA throughout his five starts in the month of August
