Police Bust Major Cable Theft Ring

Thieves had already ripped out around 1,700 meters of valuable cable from under the road on the A617 near Kellham. Response officers on routine patrol arrived right in time to catch them in the act. Several vehicles sped off as police approached, but officers quickly tracked one down, abandoned in the Newark area. Inside, they found a manhole lifting tool and other gear linked to cable thefts. Nearby they located a second vehicle that had been stolen two days earlier with a 35-year-old man still inside. That man now faces charges for cable theft and stealing a motor vehicle. This bus fits into a broader operation by neighborhood and response teams targeting copper cable thieves after a string of incidents in recent weeks. Here on February 17, the same effort led to pulling over a suspicious vehicle and arresting two men aged 40 and 48, four, theft and related offenses.
