0:00On March 2nd, Professor Carl Chin, a Birmingham historian and top expert on the real Peaky Blinders, has released a new book called Peaky Blinders, The Real Gangs and Gangsters. It dives deep into the actual people and events behind the popular TV drama, showing how the show's story is entertaining fiction while reality was, far harsher. He explains that Birmingham in the late 1800s was called the best-run city in the world, but poor working-class men fell totally left out. They lacked political power until 1918, had low-paying jobs like laboring or street selling, and lived in a system that favored the rich. With no other options, they turned to fists and gangs for survival in that tough physical world. The gangs started as backstreet sloggers around 1868 or 1869, and by 1890, the Peaky Blinders' name stopped due to their style. They wore billy cock hats with wet stiffened brims, pulled low to blind one eye and fights, later switching to flat caps the same way.

1:03Carl debunks myths like razor blade sewn into hat peaks, saying they were too poor for safety razors. Those came later in World War I for some. Soldiers. Their outfits included quiffs, silk scarves, and bell-bottom pants, but mostly secondhand rags, not the sharp suits from the show. Unlike the TV anti-heroes, the real Peaky Blinders were brutal thugs who bullied neighbors and taunted police with no Robin Hood charm. Still, the series has farc huge interest, boosting local museums and studios, and Carl hopes the upcoming film keeps that momentum going.
