Part 2 | A public place you think needs improvement

About this episode

Talk about a public place that you think needs improvement. Please say

– What place is this?
– Where is it located?
– Why does it need improvement?
– What kind of improvement does it need?

I have been asked to talk about a public place that needs improvement and I find this a very interesting question because I believe that there are many places of public interest in my city that are underutilized and undervalued so it is difficult to select only one. However, if I had to pick, I would say Bell Square in the centre of the city needs to be looked after better.

Bell Square is in the heart of the city, running from the sea all the way up to the Old Town. It is a large open square and the buildings surrounding it are protected by the country's
archaeological department. However, the square itself requires some care. Last year after a period of frost, the palm trees in the square froze and they have still not been replaced. There is a large clock which has not been running properly for years, yet nothing has been done about it. As you walk further towards the old town, numerous street peddlers have set up shop —this is illegal—They're selling anything from handmade jewelry to illegal CDs and as you go even further, the illegal goods become even more precarious.

The whole situation is admittedly really shameful because the square is one of the landmarks of the city and I hate for tourists to see it in such disrepair. To improve it, I think, first of all, there needs to be more police presence to preclude the peddlers from selling their wares there. Additionally, the square really requires not so much renovation but more just good general upkeep to keep it in tip-top shape. Furthermore, I would like to see the square appropriately lit to really showcase its beauty. I think all of this would create a square that both residents would be proud of and tourists would be pleased to visit.
